Paper is bukkit-based, so if you're familiar with bukkit then you'll know Paper.

Paper has a bunch of improvements over the old bukkit, on top of, like, existing. And even more now with the Tuinity merge.

memory usage on the JVM is complex, am not sure if we actually used more memory but all it takes is creating more crap each second to balloon up the heap usage
