void void
#

3 years ago you only need netflix and amazon and you’re good to go

mental meadow

but right now there is no streaming platform streaming the office us so idk

void void

now you gotta pay for disney+ and more streaming services

magic river
#

So I have the main three (Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+) and sail the high seas because fuck that

#

Their logo is a peacock

left swift
#

I only pay for Hulu

warm anchor
#

yeh like in US they moved Doctor Who from Netflix to Amazon Prime Video. Thanks fucking god I have both

magic river
#

Hulu was supposed to be the shared service for the broadcast stations

#

I think the ABC stuff got pulled to Disney+, haven't checked because who watches that shit?

#

NBC stuff is on Peacock, which is also a streaming TV thing apparently too, like live TV

wide chasm
#

I'm surprised people actually pay for multiple streaming services tbh, I only use Netflix

magic river
#

CBS had CBS All-Access but apparently now it's Paramount+?

#

My uncle pays for Netflix, Amazon comes with my shipping, and I pay for Disney+

cunning raft
#

the people who own discovery+ were going to merge all their IP into one platform to compete with disney

magic river
#

I'm probably going to get rid of Disney+ though, no one uses it

cunning raft
#

is that warner? i forget

wide chasm
#

Oh you pay for Amazon Prime shipping or whatever it's called

warm anchor
magic river
#

Oh yeah, don't forget HBO Max

#

I don't have that one anymore, cancelled after GoT ended

warm anchor
#

dude AT&T kept on shaving HBO max into my throat

wide chasm
#

If you're really into movies/series I kinda get paying for multiple platforms, but it's not like Netflix is lacking in content that I really feel the need to use anything else.

golden gust
#

I have prime, netflix is basically trash in the UK and I have 0 interest in disney or their practices, so, sailing the high seas for me too

wispy blade
magic river
#

I'm supposed to have free HBO Max with my phone service but our account is fucked

wide chasm
#

And I never use Amazon, so can't get that with shipping either.

warm anchor
#

Amazon Prime is worth in certain city in US

#

I can get most items for 1 day shipping

#

or 2 hour pickup

wide chasm
#

I can get everything with 1 day or same day shipping here as well for free

#

(Well, not via Amazon of course)

magic river
#

At one point it had a DirectTV service tied to it then it got all kinds of broken trying to unlink them and now when I try to get the HBO Max from that the AT&T one sends me to DirectTV and the DirectTV one sends me to AT&T

warm anchor
#

yup coz technically they are "two company" because they are evading monopoly laws PepeLa

wide chasm
#

Yeah it is

magic river
#

My "2 day shipping" only works on Mondays and usually Tuesdays

#

It's 50/50 that stuff on Wednesday will show up on Friday, everything else doesn't show up until the following Tuesday

warm anchor
#

I still dont get how some amazon shipping works

wide chasm
#

It's funny, cause they give you different shipping options and next day delivery is pretty much always free, but if you want to get stuff later (like 2 or 3 days after you buy it) then you have to pay

warm anchor
#

if I ship to my house = 1 day
if I ship to my office (that's only a few blocks away) = 2 day
PepeLa I always have to try both address to see which one is faster

golden gust
#

Well, maybe if you lived in a 1st world country

#

Like, in the cities it's generally fine as theres a lot of people here ordering, so, it makes sense for them to delivery daily

warm anchor
#

yeah if you are anything outside of city/suburb in US you are kinda fucked

cunning raft
#

not even, they just use USPS for last mile

magic river
#

When I was in Florida I don't think I ever got same day delivery but I always got 1 day and they'd even do Sunday deliveries

unkempt drift
magic river
#

They don't use USPS in big cities

cunning raft
#

yeah they got their own trucks

magic river
#

They have warehouses in the city with the most popular stuff and their own delivery service

left swift
#

HBO max has south park

warm anchor
#

USPS can suck my balls. I know their budget is cut and things get shitter but it was so bad -.-

cunning raft
#

yeah i was just saying that it's worth it anywhere

#

I don't live near anywhere a city/suburb and get 2 day

warm anchor
#

"ordered a monitor"

Your postal officer put your item in your mailbox

cunning raft

magic river

Sure, the discounts and always at least having free shipping still makes it worth it pretty much everywhere

unkempt drift

I think it’d be worth it without any of that

unkempt drift

magic river
#

When I was getting the student discount it was the same price to for prime as to sub to a channel on twitch for a year and since there was someone I wanted to sub to prime was basically free

#

The music and kindle stuff are extra subscriptions

wispy blade
#

my sister just has a thing with a friend
sister pays for disney+ and allows the friend to use it, friend has prime video and lets sister use it

untold copper
#

prime video has less quality than others

unkempt drift
untold copper
#

they just put whatever they can

left swift
#

I just pay for twitch turbo now to get no ads anywhere lol cuz they removed no ads from twitch prime for some reason

cunning raft
#

probably money

#

everyone and their dog has prime

left swift
#

I guess

cunning raft
#

ads probably generate more revenue that prime can count for

golden gust
#

I pay for prime as once in. while I order stuff on there, and the 2 hour grocery service really ain't too badly price when I factor in that it takes me an hour to get to a shop, run around and then walk it back, and video has the odd show on there worth watching

Not sure how many people pay for Apple TV +. If you buy like anything from Apple, you get a year free. So far, we’ve gotten two years for free just by buying like a new phone

magic river
#

Oh yeah I forgot about Apple's one

cunning raft
#

most people do pepela

#

i have not heard anything about it after launch

unkempt drift
#

Ted Lasso (great show) btw, lead actor got best actor in a comedy series

magic river
#

It has For All Mankind, that Today Show thing, and it'll have Foundation soon

unkempt drift
#

If Apple is serious about it, they can absolutely compete. They aren’t lacking in the cash department.

#

They didn’t go into it with any content is what makes it different. It’s mostly original stuff

warm anchor
#

I mean every new iDevice already come with 3 month free subs

unkempt drift
#

Like, Disney had tons of stuff

warm anchor
#

wait it is actually 1 year initially

unkempt drift
#

Yes

#

They extended that to 2 years

magic river
#

Apple did have licensed stuff I think but since everyone is doing their own service that didn't work

unkempt drift
#

They had a little bit. Like Charlie browns Christmas is the one I know

#

But not very much, if anything other than that.

#

That’s why it’s $5/month

void void
#

I only pay for Netflix, Disney+, Amazon, and Hulu.

magic river
#

What came first, Netflix doing original shows or everyone abandoning it for their own thing?

unkempt drift

Netflix originals

#

House of cards was many years ago now

void void
#

Also NBA League Pass if we’re including sports

void void
warm anchor
#

I guess it's still better than cable TV

#

no ads

golden gust
#

Yea, they started doing originals and cutting some of the external content first

#

and then everybody started tryna roll their own

#

HBOs suffers from a lot more subscriber churn than others, afaik

#

Disney have like one of the largest backcatalogs in existence, especially if you're tryna hit the nostalgia

wide chasm
#

Disney makes sense, I just hope not every company with 3 movies and a series will make their own service because of their great catalog of content

magic river
#

Especially since they own ABC and Marvel

#

Oh, and Pixar

#

...and LucasFilm

#

Don't they own Fox now too?

cunning raft
#

thought it was only select ip

magic river
#

Everything except Fox News

That split off to its own company

Disney's animated stuff, yes, but all their other stuff isn't necessarily for kids

unkempt drift
#

Most Pixar movies are def not made just for kids

golden gust
#

I think many kids shows have little adult nods to try to stop them tuning out too fast

unkempt drift
#

Pixar has some great stories

wide chasm
#

Pixar has good stories and you can definitely watch them as adults, but I still think of their main audience as for kids

elfin gulch
#

what stef just said basically

unkempt drift
#

Disney animation is probably much more geared towards kids than Pixar

peak dirge
#

The installer reminds me of Slackware.

twin lagoon
#

ew void

peak dirge
#

Disclaimer; I've used many different varieties of (modern) Unix(-like) OSes. I've spent a lot of time with Debian-based OSes, spent a lot of time with macOS (still a Unix after all these years, but it's so divorced from the Linux/BSD systems of today), and I've even used Arch and Gentoo before. (And Slackware, apparently.)

#

I even used to run Arch as my main OS for a while, from November 2019 to about June 2020 when I moved to Fedora 32 because I couldn't really put up with some of the quirks of Arch for my usecase.

#

I'm generally very happy with Fedora, as strange as it sounds.

twin lagoon
#

i've used fedora as main os aswell for a bit

#

but i just ended up missing the AUR

peak dirge
#

I haven't missed the AUR so much on my present system

#

But having gone through the process of installing a tiling WM setup on Arch, I can see how the AUR is indispensable

golden gust
#

Arch is nice but it's the pros and cons of it all, really

floral mesa
#

AUR is replaceable on fedora, there is rpmfusion, which should solve 90% of your free/non-free needs, along with copr

#

there is also flatpak

waxen panther
#

flatpak 😬

floral mesa
#

to be honest, I dont really see a point in AUR, they should just let pacman actually download from it like its an actual repo than rely on an external program to download the manifest, then build it, then tell pacman how to install it

peak dirge
#

yeah, so, um, Void Linux apparently(?) doesn't bundle QXL drivers for Wayland since I'm running it in GNOME Boxes (GNOME's frontend to QEMU/KVM basically)

floral mesa
#

those steps above can be done on fedora from the ground up really...

peak dirge
#

Wayland is a hard must have IMO

floral mesa
#

I want a lightweight wayland DE

#

something that doesnt fucking tile though

waxen panther
#

cant help you there tux, havent looked into wayland on void yet

golden gust
#

AUR can just download stuff

peak dirge
#

there are several stacking Wayland compositors

golden gust
#

Just, then you gotta create a mirror and then look at hosting stuff which might not be legal to do so

#

But, aur can ship pacman packages

floral mesa
#

@golden gust its been awhile since I used arch, but at the end of the day, I just want to run a single command to download from another repo without the aid of another tool to do it

waxen panther
#

just build your own packages ! rolling_eyes

floral mesa
#

been there, done that

golden gust
#

and the solution to that is to solve it with an illegal repo

#

woooo

waxen panther
#

pinging cat wtf!

golden gust
#

oh, it's "legal"

#

but, basically, stuff fedora didn't wanna ship for licensing and legal reasons, so, odd grey area at best

peak dirge
#

well, there's an idea for a contribution to Void

floral mesa
#

pretty much, stuff generally held by patents or otherwise software controlled via single party are singled out to rpmfusion

#

programs like steam or gstreamer libraries

olive marlin
#

Void provides many non-free packages (like Discord or Teams), but if they can't get legal letter allowing them to distribute, they only keep them in repo, so you need to download their mini builder and setup local repo for it.

peak dirge
#

It probably will be fine if I do a bare metal install, but ugh. I’m not willing to go that far

floral mesa
#

fedora is also somewhat handled by a company, more or less a US company

worn ember
#

weekly linux distro converastion i see

#

waxen panther
#

frank otter
#

it's where they shove community stuff

#

jeez I use arch and I don't know this

olive marlin
#

Tux I'm feeling sick of Void tbh. Because of how many things you need to do (install discord, lack of per-user services unless you code them etc).

floral mesa
#

isnt void the one where it has multiple package managers?

olive marlin
#

And just many things I take for granted from, for example, Arch.

#

No.

#

Void has a custom written package manager, xbps.

waxen panther
#

installing discord is easy wdym smh

olive marlin
#

There's some Arch fork which has like 5 different package managers?

floral mesa
#

ah, I remember in some chat there was someone using apt, dnf, etc...

waxen panther
#

you can also just not use runit on void

#

the freedom of choice

olive marlin
#

What's the point of using Void, if I throw away everything and redo it using something else which other distros ship by default?

minor badge
floral mesa
#

im fine with systemd, if I wanted a light weight distro, it would mainly be for a server.

minor badge
#

and haskell! nix for haskell is important cause its the only package manager which packages it correctly pepela

olive marlin
#

Also, still having issues with stuff not working after putting it to sleep.

floral mesa
#

besides, systemd just makes my job easier on killing programs that absolutely refuse to die

golden gust
#

sleep mode in general on linux is fucking cancer

floral mesa
#

gnome generally fixed sleep mode?

golden gust
#

it's more lower level

frank otter
#

Once I tried multiple package managers

floral mesa
#

ah ok

golden gust
#

e.g. kernel modules not dealing with resuming too well

frank otter
#

if anyone wants a compete inability to graphics drivers, bedrock Linux exists

#

Well no the drivers thing was proba ly me being stupid

olive marlin
#

When I put my PC to sleep:

  1. My VMs jump to year 2187 or so, so everything breaks on the networks (Certs etc)
  2. KeepassXC can't find my YubiKey, until I restart it
  3. My keyboard layout is being reset
frank otter
#

I don't use my pc on/off enough for slepe to be worth it

olive marlin
#

Also, for some dumb reason won't read polkit rules properly and let me manage networks as user.

waxen panther
#

i have issues with my ethernet stopping working when i wake from hibernate, but i had that on systemd too

frank otter
#

plus everything starts so fast shutdown is almost the same thing

#

I don't think I've ever had issues with what was it

olive marlin
#

I don't want to reopen things.

apex doesn't work on linux and thats 90% of my gaming

I play apex too

waxen panther

that and rust which also doesnt

titanfall as well

titanfa is apex but imo nicer

waxen panther

god i miss titanfall

floral mesa

and this is why I have two systems

frank otter

you don't spend half the match looting up then getting third partied by a fokin kraber

waxen panther

yea, i only play apex cuz its as close to as a active tf game as you can get

floral mesa

one for gaming, another as my main workstation

frank otter
#

broc do u mean titanfall 1 or 2

waxen panther
#

i like both, i prefer 2 though i think

frank otter
#

I still play titanfall 2, it's active enough for me

#

don't own 1

waxen panther

it was dead for a long time until recently

frank otter

you should play it again, tis kinda alive

waxen panther

and now im on the apex comp grind, no time for another game PepeHands

i might

i do miss titans

frank otter

if you don't mind having the same teammates for maybe two matches it's OK

titans are awesome

which did you like most

waxen panther

i think it'd be too fast for my friend though, he thinks apex is fast lol

frank otter

I would grind apex comp but I'm like really bad

waxen panther

which of what

titanfall is apex if apex took stim

which was ur fave titan

waxen panther

oh also in titanfall the Mozambique is

what is it I can't remember

I had very strong feelings

waxen panther

alternator on titanfall is nuts

frank otter

I think it was awesome

wispy blade

i still find it funny that apex is made with the Source engine xd

waxen panther

makes the one in apex look pathetic

frank otter
#

alternator in titanfall is the second best smg

#

car best smg imo

waxen panther
#

apex isnt thru source wdym

#

actually no

frank otter
#

iirc it's the source 2 engine?

#

is there a second source

waxen panther
#

avalanch was a branch of source originally

#

they're basically nothing alike now though

frank otter
#

wait source was open source?

waxen panther
#

err, i meant fork

frank otter
#

ach

#

source isn't open iirc

waxen panther
#

there's been a few leaks but yea not open

frank otter
#

damn

#

game engine aside movement in apex and titanfall is sooo satisfying

#

titanfall much more so

waxen panther
#

apex's is pretty good too, you just have to learn how to abuse it

#

going 500mph in tf was fun tho

magic river
#

Wow ARM's new little core really sucks

#

4 years since their last update and it only does better at the very upper end of the curve

#

And a lot of that is probably only because it has twice the L2 and L3

#

Apple's little cores were 4x faster at about the same power vs the A55 and the A510 is basically the same thing

#

Same as the A55, I mean

frank otter
#

I would try abuse apex movement but I wanna work on my aim

#

I should probably work on m fps all my friends say its that

peak dirge
#

No surprise that Qualcomm bought NUVIA

#

Ampere is also working on its own custom core. Which is an effective lack of confidence in Arm's Neoverse cores.

magic river
#

Ampere started with a custom core so that's not too surprising

peak dirge
#

That custom core came from Applied Micro and wasn't very good to begin with. Quicksilver uses Neoverse N1 cores.

magic river
#

afaik the neoverse cores are just a halfway design between A78 and X1

#

Oh, except with SVE

peak dirge
#

anyway, yeah, I'm not going to be playing with Void anymore, until I install VirtualBox... hopefully it works better!

magic river
#

A510 as max perf is about the same as an A72 though and should be spectre-proof since I don't think it does any speculative execution

#

So that's nice, it's just not A72 perf while using A55 power which still wouldn't be as good as what Apple has but was more like what I was expecting

#

Ah, right, they still do branch prediction so still vulnerable

peak dirge
#

Closing in on a year of being a Fedora user. Most of the issues I have are with the GNOME environment. The distro itself has 95% of what I need, and it generally stays out of the way. Except that it likes to reboot to apply updates, which is a very Windows/macOS thing to do. I can kinda understand why but it still pains me.

#

Conclusion: Fedora is perfectly fine! I'd recommend it over Ubuntu for sure...

wispy blade
#

nothing wrong with a little reboot

#

since it usually takes <30 secs on linux

magic river
#

I try to install things only from packages so stick with Ubuntu since it's more likely to have a package or repo for something

#

No snaps though

#

Oh, and I used to be an Ubuntu Developer so worst case I can dust off those old skills and make/update a package

peak dirge
#

I think I'll probably have better luck with Void installing it on bare metal.

#

Never would have thought that!

golden gust
#

30 seconds

#

somebody has clearly never ran server hardware

#

:L

peak dirge
#

I do like how Void boots super quickly, thanks to runit of course.

minor badge
#

I use Ubuntu for work, its definitely nicer than most other DE-included distros I've tried as of 20.04

peak dirge
#

But I've hit a snag setting it up on a VM, so -1 on that one.

magic river
#

runit isn't any faster than systemd, if anything I'd expect it to be a little slower from all the shells it has to spawn

waxen panther
#

my void install boots quicker than my arch one did

#

no idea if its due to runit tho

wispy blade
#

runit is like

peak dirge
#

Adding it to my Ventoy drive though!

wispy blade
#

100x smaller than systemd LOL

golden gust
#

but, if you don't have systemd, how will you get systemd-office?

peak dirge
#

I know Alpine is working on a new init system, which can be described as "the good bits of systemd without all the chaff"

magic river
#

The .tar.gz might be 100x smaller but I doubt it's 100x smaller than the init binary and that doesn't really say anything

wispy blade
#

the way runit works is pretty cool tho

#

just symlink stuff

golden gust
#

I still miss the days of just shoving .sh files around the place

magic river
#

I just symlink stuff for systemd too 😛

golden gust
#

Like, I kinda get why people wanted to move away from just having script files all over the place, but, i mean, it was simple, it kinda worked most of the time without all the overheads

wispy blade
golden gust
#

server hardware tends to do like full memory checks and basically, you get to see the boot screen multiple times as the hardware inits

golden gust
#

papers server takes like 10 minutes to reboot, most of that POSTing

magic river
#

Simple shell scripts were fine for a desktop with a fixed network connection but as soon as you get in to NFS, wifi, etc you need something smarter

#

So they were failing for servers, laptops, and mobile

peak dirge
#

And, I mean, there is a point to it. Part of me wants to write an init system right now. And while I'm at it, a full Linux distro.

wispy blade
#

PaperOS /s

golden gust
#

NetworkManager seemed to work fine back in the days

#

no idea why that's now a systemd thing

#

and now ubuntu even switched away from systemds over to netplan

magic river
#

I still use NetworkManager

golden gust
#

and cent has their own networking crap too

peak dirge
#

But I'm just one guy, so making my own Linux distro is a tall order

magic river
#

systemd's thing is for servers and VMs, mostly

golden gust
#

I just hate how invasive systemd is

peak dirge
#

So maybe I'll just write an init daemon instead.

golden gust
#

it went from just a replacement to init to basically being a "manages it all" type deal

magic river
#

The whole point of systemd is to standardize and modernize the plumbing layer

#

The stuff that isn't the kernel or your app but needs to exist for your app to work

waxen panther
#

iz too thicc

magic river
#

If you took systemd init and stripped it to just the bits needed to accomplish everything it does as an init I doubt you'd cut 10% off of it

#

The cron and inetd stuff is pretty minor

#

I'd argue the sandboxing stuff is an important part of the init but if you disagree removing it doesn't save much, it's already setting up cgroups for services so limiting what those can access isn't that much effort

#

If you think the cgroups aren't needed then you've missed one of the key features of the system

mental meadow
haughty bear
#

what's the keybind to close a tab in intellij? Ctrl+W doesnt seem to work

magic river
#

Ctrl+F4

haughty bear
#

it works, thanks

peak dirge
#

yeah, I came up with my ideas for the init system and need to write them down... it will probably look a lot like the Alpine init daemon replacement though.

#

actually, I just realized that I'm making a supervisor daemon instead

#

yeah so basically it'd be a Rust service supervisor configured with TOML files lol

#

that's all it is

#

might as well learn C and help out with the Alpine init replacement 🙃

wispy blade
#

the only things i've used C for is small config file edits for dwm/dmenu LOL

peak dirge
#

In addition, my supervisor would be hard to bootstrap, because you'd need to bootstrap Rust first, whereas most Linux distribution bootstraps start with building a C compiler.

wispy blade
#

We split when we where maintaining 1.13 and 1.12 together, given the seperate build jobs it kinda would screwed up with the fact that 1.12 was still seeing work on it

then we kept the splits, in part we do often backport stuff for a tiiiiny little while while we get to the point where we can say we recommend switching and people are already doing it

KDE has quite a bit of issues, and it makes me think that they are trying to expect the protocol to do all the work, not kwin

peak dirge
#

Yeah, KDE is definitely the most Wayland-averse of the major DEs. Fedora didn't enable Wayland for KDE until Fedora 34 (AKA just recently).

#

my waybar has fucked fonts

floral mesa
#

as much as Id like to call the gnome devs thickskulled on many of their decisions, at least they understand that wayland is really just a way for the DE to talk to the applications in a secure manner

#

anything that wayland doesnt implement they implemented themselves

waxen panther
#

might backup my install and try to get wayland running

#

i'll miss bspwm tho

floral mesa
#

@peak dirge when I looked at KDE on wayland, it had no concept of a primary monitor

#

I was like what the fuck

#

damn it, controlling where my primary layout was going to be a hassle

peak dirge
#

I need to make a package for Inter fonts

floral mesa
#

wayland on GNOME is such a wonderful experience, and holy crap monitor layouts work as they fucking should

peak dirge
#

Oh, they didn't bundle it. Weird!

floral mesa
#

its just everything else about gnome

#

sadly its every other release they remove something and someone has to add it back in tweaks

#

and now tweaks doesnt control extensions...

#

would be nice if the settings app was more extensible

#

and had tweaks built right in

#

because I bet the first thing people who run gnome is install tweaks

#

then dash to dock...

#

or panel

@waxen panther hi

waxen panther

potent fossil
#

your bio is objectively wrong, and you're under arrest

waxen panther
#

lol

#

bardy said it about me omegaroll

#

i find it absolutely hilarious and is maybe the highlight of my year

potent fossil
#

why is he not in here anymore

#

where did he fucking go

cunning raft
potent fossil
#

Oh I thought bardy was stupid for barty

#

Where's barty/party

cunning raft
#

oh he left yes

waxen panther
#

he's now darty

#

still not here tho

formal turret
#

is it dartyrealms now too?

cunning raft
#

they're in tuinity

warm anchor
#

head of yatopia dev loves Tuinity discord too!

novel horizon
#

i like and hate discord at the same time, damn

potent fossil
#

k

novel horizon
#

i wish something better came to existence and was used, i use it for quite some time, but damn and simple dont k me:(

potent fossil
#

matrix exists, just needs a lot more contributors

novel horizon
#

That's just bridge tho, although interesting 🤔

potent fossil
#

?

#

It's an entire chat platform

#

Bridges are a big feature though

novel horizon
#

so many clients woah

#

looks kinda nice

potent fossil
#

yea, it's like IRC in that respect. You can use any client you want

novel horizon
#

that looks neat 🤔 well, i mean, i hate how discord works in few things and such, but also love the features etc.

potent fossil
#

But it's on the "too technical" side of things still for "normal" users to use it

novel horizon
#

yeah, like irc 🤷‍♂️

potent fossil
#

Pretty much

#

the element client is trying to change that, it's a really nice client

#

however the default homeserver at matrix.org has so many fucking users that it's super slow now

novel horizon
#

that's a shame

potent fossil
#

people aren't realizing that 1) you can run your own homeserver and 2) you can join any homeserver and connect to the wider matrix community no matter which one you join on

novel horizon
#

I'm okay with using discord as it is as a app, but some things are weird, some info they're gathering, well, but also not letting you choose where to install discord? that's weird

warm anchor
#

that's the things though people want something simple and easy to use that requires no config

#

Discord kinda tops that

viscid wedge
potent fossil
#

they automatically federate, so if you joined my private homeserver you could still chat on matrix.org w/o issue

viscid wedge
#

im on halogen.city

novel horizon
#

I just hate how discord behaves or more the company behind it

potent fossil
novel horizon
#

but the discord, with the features, apis and such, its so good

viscid wedge
#

could probably run synapse or dendrite at home but eh

novel horizon
#

so many bots and easy integration

potent fossil
#

matrix has bots and integration too

#

it's a developer heaven tbqh

#

you can even write bridge software to any other chat application

novel horizon
#

so matrix basically is a client for their own network/servers and also a bridge for all other apps?

potent fossil
#

there are some discord ones but one requires adding a bot to the server and the other requires selfbotting which breaks discord ToS

#

matrix is a communication protocol

#

nothing more

novel horizon
#

oh alright

potent fossil
#

like irc

novel horizon
#

looks kinda neat, should try it probably

potent fossil
#

you have homeservers which implement the server side of the proto, and clients which do the clientside. There is a reference homeserver, but you can also write your own. Doesn't matter. Same for clients.

#

As long as it follows the matrix spec

#

has voice/video/text messaging, the voice/video depends on whether or not the server admin of the homeserver has set it up though

#

(and has resources to spare)

#

however as a user you can just DL a client, find a homeserver you like, and use it. It's very easy

#

Only gets technical when you want to run a homeserver

novel horizon
#

although it kinda looks nice, it's still a bit complex for normal users, maybe it'll get better over time though

potent fossil
#

i agree

#

however, all it's really gonna take to appeal to a wider audience (including dumfuqs) is: a really nice client with good UI/UX that speaks matrix proto

#

imagine a discord-like client that instead just speaks matrix instead of proprietary discord

#

would be ez then

novel horizon
#

yeah, immediately

#

but it's gonna be "hard" when currently you need servers for it
