Disclaimer; I've used many different varieties of (modern) Unix(-like) OSes. I've spent a lot of time with Debian-based OSes, spent a lot of time with macOS (still a Unix after all these years, but it's so divorced from the Linux/BSD systems of today), and I've even used Arch and Gentoo before. (And Slackware, apparently.)
I even used to run Arch as my main OS for a while, from November 2019 to about June 2020 when I moved to Fedora 32 because I couldn't really put up with some of the quirks of Arch for my usecase.
I'm generally very happy with Fedora, as strange as it sounds.

Closing in on a year of being a Fedora user. Most of the issues I have are with the GNOME environment. The distro itself has 95% of what I need, and it generally stays out of the way. Except that it likes to reboot to apply updates, which is a very Windows/macOS thing to do. I can kinda understand why but it still pains me.
Conclusion: Fedora is perfectly fine! I'd recommend it over Ubuntu for sure...

If you took systemd init and stripped it to just the bits needed to accomplish everything it does as an init I doubt you'd cut 10% off of it
The cron and inetd stuff is pretty minor
I'd argue the sandboxing stuff is an important part of the init but if you disagree removing it doesn't save much, it's already setting up cgroups for services so limiting what those can access isn't that much effort
If you think the cgroups aren't needed then you've missed one of the key features of the system

Yeah, KDE is definitely the most Wayland-averse of the major DEs. Fedora didn't enable Wayland for KDE until Fedora 34 (AKA just recently).

you have homeservers which implement the server side of the proto, and clients which do the clientside. There is a reference homeserver, but you can also write your own. Doesn't matter. Same for clients.
As long as it follows the matrix spec
has voice/video/text messaging, the voice/video depends on whether or not the server admin of the homeserver has set it up though
(and has resources to spare)
however as a user you can just DL a client, find a homeserver you like, and use it. It's very easy
