You can think of paper like a server sided mod to the vanilla java server
That imposes no requirements of the client and is fully compatible protocol wise
We only change internals to allow plugins to do fancy stuff, to fix bugs and exploits or to make stuff go fast
But it pretty much behaves like a normal java server for the most part
It's pretty much a drop in replacement for the vanilla server too
