For general misc. stuff it's rely not a problem, the default folder is there fir reference. Enemies uploaded without their global hash are a much worse problem because most people don't know how to find them

This is not for creating a mod in hollow knight. Rather, I am working on my game.

hey guys, is there a dataset on hollow knight in regards to tilemap i.e. which cells (x,y) on the grid have a tile or if they are empty. Also, which decorations are placed on which x,y,z coordinates.

The second (decorations) always cover up the tiles.

I am working on a procedural metroidvania generation and I need some help. I wish to use that dataset and create a procedural tilemap generator. Then I would take that tilemap as input to decorate by throwing decorations on top of it.

The issue is, I dont know how to decompile the game. I was wondering if you guys have that lying around.

Rn, I have made up a procedural generated metroidvania map. It is just rooms floating which can be pulled to a single point. After clicking bake, a pin joint is formed between the colliding walls. These pin joints would then be used to get the position of doors. The joint knows which two rooms it is joining so I can connect the scenes of both rooms using some scripting.

Editing save files

You can edit various values of save files. Below are different available methods.

  • MoreSaves Mod | Install
  • With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the in-game Menu. Either from the Main Menu or Pause Menu, go to Options > Mods > MoreSaves to edit save files in game.
  • QoL mod | Install
    • If you open a save file with QoL installed, you'll have an extra file called user#.json (where # is the file number), which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information
  • DebugMod | Install
    • While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod.
  • Website
    • Find the Save File, upload it to the website, and make the edits. It will Download as save file for Slot 1, so rename it if needed. If you do not know where your saves are located, type ?tag saves for more information

  • Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
    • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
    • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
  • HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
    • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
  • Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
  • Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed

Resources

Common issues

  • If the Skin List is covering up other mods, you can toggle it with Del or Fn + Del. You can edit this Keybind in the Custom Knight menu.
  • If your skin isn't working, go to Options > Mods > Custom Knight > Advanced > Fix My Skins. After this, you may need to use the Reload option in the previous menu.
    • Upgraded Dream Shield (UDS) breaks Custom Knight’s launching correctly the first time. To use both mods at the same time, you must disable UDS, open a save with only Custom Knight and wait until it stops lagging. You can then close the game and enable UDS again.
  • If you see lots of White Boxes ◻️, restart your game. You may also need to try applying skins in a small/empty room, like a stag station.
  • Make sure that you apply skins from the Pause Menu when you have your save file loaded. Skins applied from the Main Menu will only be used for new files.

HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
  • For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

Generally speaking, to avoid issues make sure to always save on a vanilla bench before save & quitting with Pale Court. That being said you can always recover a save in case something wrong happens

Because HKMP as a whole is a more niche mod than people think it is, mostly because hk isn’t that much of a multiplayer game in concept
It also doesn’t help that the rather important lag of hkmp makes the PvP look unappealing from afar
Even more so the fact that you are currently thinking about playing at a time which is very much sleepy hours for the US, and a time in which Europe is still slowly waking up means that there are not that many players awake

Common fixes for controller issues

Try these separately first, but if they don't work, then you may need to try a combination of them.

  • Use Steam's controller settings, enable Steam Inputs from the game properties, and check controller configuration support through Steam's Big Picture mode
  • Toggle "Controller Native Input" in the game, found at Main Menu ᐅ Options ᐅ Controller. Restart your game after changing it.

If it was originally working, then the most likely thing is that one of you changed your connection info. If your connection info (namely your own IP) changed, then you'll need to start a new Itemsync.

Since you mentioned one or both going offline, I'm fairly confident this is what happened.

Yeah, not usually mod differences for that. Usually it's just a networking hiccup. Iirc the initial desync issue is resolved from a save and quit, but @icy schooner (or one of the regular long-time Rando racers) would probably know more. A long time ago, there was also an issue when quitting to menu before creating a new game instead of restarting the whole game, but I think that's been fixed.

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:

Windows won't let me open the Mod Installer

  • If there's a Pop Up that says "Windows Protected your PC", then click "More Info" (on the left), and then a "Run Anyway" button will appear to click.
    • This happens because Windows automatically blocks apps that don't pay Microsoft and go through the process to have their app Verified by Windows.

Installer vanishes after downloading / loads a blank screen

This is commonly because one or more issues:

  • The installer was left in a .zip or in the Download folder. (It's recommended to put it on your Desktop or on the same Harddrive as your game installation)
  • The installer may need to be run as Administrator (Right-Click it, and select "Run as Administrator")
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by built-in security software, such as Windows Defender
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by third-party security software (Avast / Norton / MacAfee / etc)
    • If you are not sure how to create Exceptions in your Security software for programs, then you can see this guide or you may need to google how to do it for the software that you use.

Common MacOS Problems & Fixes

Installer cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer:

On MacOS 15 (Sequoia) or later:

  • Try to open the app once, then go to the System Settings and click "Privacy and Security" in the side bar.
  • Scroll down to the security section. The installer should appear there, click the "Open" button next to it.
  • Click "Open Anyway". You might need to enter your password there.
    With an older version of MacOS:
  • In the Finder on Mac, locate the app you want to open. Don’t use Launchpad to do this! It doesn’t allow access the shortcut menu.
  • Control + Left-Click the app icon, then choose "Open" from the shortcut menu.
  • Left-Click "Open".
    • Note: You may need to do this twice, as the "Open" button doesn’t always appear the first time.
      The app is now saved as an exception to your security settings, and you can open it in the future by double-clicking it like normal.

Installer doesn't open correctly on MacOS:

  • Right-Click the Installer icon, and select "show contents".
  • Go into Contents then to the MacOS folder, and double-click the file with the same name as your installer (Scarab or Lumafly).
    • If that step didn’t start the installer but instead opened a terminal window with an exception saying that the access to a path was denied, you’ll need to run the app as administrator:

    • Type the command sudo ./Lumafly or sudo ./Scarab (depending on your installer) in the terminal window then press enter.

I might be stupid and missing something, but... I can't find an invincibility mod. I'm fighting the Soul Sanctum boss and it's been about 25 attempts, and to be honest, I'm just not having fun anymore. I'm sure it's some weird psychological thing, and I understand failure and struggle are a big part of the game, but... not this much. It's to a point where I'm not looking forward to satisfaction of finally beating this boss, I'm just bored and a little frustrated. So, because at the end of the day I'm playing to have fun and enjoy the story, I want to just install an invincibility mod, trash this boss, and then turn the mod off and keep playing (at least unless I hit another boss who I can't beat after hours and hours)

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
  • For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat
