Additional note: Charm Crab is apparently a "game overhaul" mod, that modifies a lot of things in the game (I know it modifies charms, but I think it tweaks a few other things as well). It's meant to give a new experience to a fresh playthrough, but it notably conflicts with most mods other than plain Rando.

With a map, you can use RMM.

Without it, you can use Randomizer's helper log and it will list the uncleared locations.

Modding "Xbox Games" versions (Gamepass / Microsoft's App Store):

Note: this is for Desktop/Laptop. You cannot mod the game on Xbox consoles

  • Use Lumafly (it has additional support for this version that other installers currently don't have)
  • Right-Click the Lumafly.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
    • It should automatically find the install and ask if it's correct. If it doesn't find it, then you will need to link it to the Hollow Knight.exe found in C:\XboxGames\Hollow Knight\Content by default.
  • After installing / installing any mods, wait about a minute before launching the game (this is because Windows does a weird thing for Xbox Games things, and it makes copies of files)
    If you have further issues, then please see #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post if needed.

Why I don't want to buy a copy of the game? I already done it but I want to test few things with cheats and I don't want to undeservedly unlock several achievements in my steam account. I am going to unlock them in future in honest way on my steam version of the game.

To add to the message above: All gmae copies share the save location for things like Achievements and Save files, so even if you get an "unofficial copy", you would still affect your Steam copy.

The only somewhat caveat to this would be

  • Console copies, which are thus obviously not on the same machine
  • The Xbox Games version (which can be purchased on the Microsoft App Store)
    • This would somewhat work because Microsoft does some weird things with their apps, and don't use the normal file / file locations that all other platforms use. I'm pretty sure what it would do is originally find your files from your steam copy, and then make copies of them to its own location, but then it would alter its location. An odditity that may occur though, is that Achievements unlocked in this version may still end up affecting the Steam version, because some information is Registry data, which would probably be the same still, despite the files being different.

Instead of using a pirated copy, you can just use your official copy and use the 'disable achievements' mod to avoid getting achievements while modding.

HKMP (Hollow Knight Multiplayer)

How it works

HKMP puts a copy of each player into each other players world.
Enemies have separate health and will usually be in different places; Items/abilities must be collected separately; and Breakable objects must be broken by each player. Player attacks happen in each player's world, damaging any enemies/players it comes in contact with. A player is only hurt by the enemies in their own world. Windows won't let me open the Mod Installer

  • If there's a Pop Up that says "Windows Protected your PC", then click "More Info" (on the left), and then a "Run Anyway" button will appear to click.
    • This happens because Windows automatically blocks apps that don't pay Microsoft and go through the process to have their app Verified by Windows.

Installer vanishes after downloading / loads a blank screen

This is commonly because one or more issues:

  • The installer was left in a .zip or in the Download folder. (It's recommended to put it on your Desktop or on the same Harddrive as your game installation)
  • The installer may need to be run as Administrator (Right-Click it, and select "Run as Administrator")
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by built-in security software, such as Windows Defender
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by third-party security software (Avast / Norton / MacAfee / etc)
    • If you are not sure how to create Exceptions in your Security software for programs, then you can see this guide or you may need to google how to do it for the software that you use.

Starting Pale Court

  • Install it using Lumafly
  • You must have ||All dreamers||
  • You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
  • You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

  • MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE LATEST UPDATED VERSION
  • AdditionalMaps, Randomizer 4, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
  • Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
    • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
    • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefaq for more information.
  • HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
    • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
  • Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
  • Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
  • Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.

Hi, me and a friend are having trouble getting the Nekomata skin to work. Apparently, whenever she downloads the Nekomat skin from the drive and completes all the necessary steps to toggle on the skin in the custom knight mod, it doesn't show up in-game.

There are several connections that add extra content to randomizer if that's an approach you want to take, most of them just add a couple items/locations (such as randomizing the glory of being a fool or bardoon's butt) while others are a bit more extreme (like randomizing every grass patch in the entire game). Depending on what you want to experience, randomizer adds a LOT of replayability

Common fixes for controller issues

Try these separately first, but if they don't work, then you may need to try a combination of them.

I agree that this could have been a bit more clear. By default, Lumafly stores the mods you uninstall in a cache so that you don't need to redownload them when you want to install them again (at least if there wasn't an update since you uninstalled them).
When it says that it uses an extra xxx Mb, that means that you currently have that amount of space used by cached mods, which you can free by enabling low storage mode

Personally I started modding the game because I wanted to try out the randomizer, but Custom Knight and some extension mods like Pale Court (mainly combat focused with a bit of platforming), the Glimmering Realm (that one is like a second quest), or Test of Teamwork (mainly platforming) are also commonly used/recommended, without being ridiculously difficult for the most part. If you want some qol mods, QoL and Benchwarp are quite useful. 

Note that there aren’t many publicly listed packs, since you can relatively easily browse the mod list by searching by tags, however there is this thread https://discord.com/channels/879125729936298015/1222229500927016970 in the modding server (linked in the pinned messages) which contains a few multiplayer related mods

Hello all 🙂 I need some help, please.
I had to reinstall my whole PC, new OS (Still W10), new HD, etc. and now my lumafly is not working. Reinstalled HW itself, then dowloaded the latest Lumafly, installed mods, even reloaded the program itself and reupdated each choosen mods, but nothing. No loading bar, no mods menu in the options, no tiny yellow icon in the main screen.
I checked fireborn's videos and found no help (or I was not careful enough.) Also checked the path which is correct (Steam bought version)
Do you please have any information how to connect Flmafly with HW again? I am really eager to try out new challenges.

That's probably because out of the 2 versions that you can find on that list, the one for current patch uses a semi-broken link, and the other, well, is for 1.4, so it won't work on current patch. The closest thing to a mod that enables to customize that experience would be "CustomPantheons", where you basically can define the order in which you want to fight them. Other than that... Yeah, the base game already provides that.
