  • MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE LATEST UPDATED VERSION
  • AdditionalMaps, Randomizer 4, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
  • Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
    • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
    • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefiles for more information.
  • HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
    • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
  • Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
  • Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed

You should be able to get them, yes. In some rare cases the achievement pop-ups are removed but the achievements are still counted, and in some even rarer cases the achievements stop working, but when that happens reverting to vanilla solves the issue.

How it works

Hi. If i use multiple mods that do the same thing would they stack?
For example, I'm using the Bonfire mod and the Charm overhaul mod. Both mods try to increase Geo gain either by charm combo or by leveling up. Would they stack? I assume they probably overwrite each other.

Windows won't let me open the Mod Installer

  • If there's a Pop Up that says "Windows Protected your PC", then click "More Info" (on the left), and then a "Run Anyway" button will appear to click.
    • This happens because Windows automatically blocks apps that don't pay Microsoft and go through the process to have their app Verified by Windows.

Installer vanishes after downloading / loads a blank screen

This is commonly because one or more issues:

  • The installer was left in a .zip or in the Download folder. (It's recommended to put it on your Desktop or on the same Harddrive as your game installation)
  • The installer may need to be run as Administrator (Right-Click it, and select "Run as Administrator")
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by built-in security software, such as Windows Defender
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by third-party security software (Avast / Norton / MacAfee / etc)
    • If you are not sure how to create Exceptions in your Security software for programs, then you can see this guide or you may need to google how to do it for the software that you use.

Modding and Achievements

  • Mods do not normally prevent you from getting Achievements.
    • If you want to prevent them, you can use the Disable Achievements mod.
    • If a mod changes/removes something that's part of an achievement trigger, then you won't get that achievement.
  • In many cases, achievements are still earned, but the pop-ups do not come up when modding.
  • In some rare cases, players report not getting achievements when modding. While this is not normal, it should be mentioned that it can happen.
    • This is often tied to them doing something like skipping something with QoL (such as credits), and thus skipping the actual trigger for the Achievement.

So... here is the thing. I see Custom skin mod. I see cool skins. I want cool skins. The problem, unfortunately, is that I like different skins/effects from different packs, but I cannot mix and match to my liking due to them all being on sprite sheets.
For instance, I may like the nail swipe effect, and many other effects, from a texture pack A, but like the Knight skin more from a texture pack B, however, I cannot mix them because theyre on the same Knight sprite sheet. Same may apply for certain HUD elements as well.

Is there any way to unpack sprite sheets into individual sprites so that I can interchange the different skins from different sources and then repack them, or am I stuck with what ive got? Im no artist, I just want to mix and match.

That said, I've combined skins before just by opening both at once in photoshop, erasing what I didn't want from each and then saving as a .png. sort of the qui k & dirty way to do it & you need to make sure you don't miss anything since fragments for the same thing aren't all together on the page

I tried dumping with the skins active, and I only got vanilla sprites. Besides that, they were all sprite sheets, which, again, I do not know how to ''split'', if even possible at all.

As for the ''quick & dirty'' method, I assume it would work with GIMP as well? And another assumption I have is that if I only left what i wanted from each, and then copy pasted the entire sheet image from one to another, everything would get filled with the combination I want (fill in on removed sprites on another sheet) and would be good to save and use?

You split them with godump. It's a multi step process of dumping the atlas, editing the godump file to only include the sprites you want to dump individually, then actually dumping the sprites. Doing what Colette suggested is the far easier way to go about combining different sheets for personal use.

Onigiri was a challenge skin. It is not publicly available and the challenge to win it is over.

I suggested working with them all open at once, rather than one at a time, to make sure you don't completely delete something from all the sheets, not knowing what it is & ended up with no animation for it in game. with layers you can see if you end up with nothing in the spot (also ping isn't needed, thanks)

  • Install it using Lumafly
  • You must have ||All dreamers||
  • You must have ||defeated a specific boss:|| ||White Defender||
  • You must then find the location that connects each Knight to the world. You can watch the Launch Trailer if you want directions where to go.

Known problems with Pale Court

  • MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE LATEST UPDATED VERSION
  • AdditionalMaps, Randomizer 4, Extra MenuBackgrounds, EssenceAlways (and any mod that attempts to force Essence drops) aren't compatible, and will prevent you from being able to enter fights.
  • Using a BenchWarp Deployed Bench in new areas will break the file
    • If you accidentally do this, then close the game, disable Benchwarp, then open the file again. Get off the bench you spawn at, and sit down again. Then save+quit, and you should be able to enable Benchwarp again.
    • Alternatively, you can open your user#.modded.json for that file, and edit "atDeployedBench": true, -> "atDeployedBench": false, . You can type ?tag savefiles for more information.
  • HK Vocalized may prevent you from accessing fights
    • (This appears to not be consistently reproducible, but if you can't enter fights, then try disabling it)
  • Skill Upgrades will prevent Charms from working correctly
  • Hollow Point will not work if Pale Court is installed
  • Any mod that adds new Charms may prevent Charms from working.

If you're having other issues, then please read #1090079233520451714 and create a #1057825333841240104 post with the requested info and any details. Be aware that Pale Court was not designed to be compatible with other mods, and you will usually need to choose between using either Pale Court or the other mod(s).

uninstalling debug doesn't remove the changes it made to your game. You need to install it again and put your damage back to normal.

If you accidentally bound "increase nail damage" to one of your commonly used keys (or if you use a lot the key that is bound by default to this action) then might have increased the damage of your nail by accident while using debug, you can check that in the binds menu. You can unbind it by clicking the white dot ⚪ next to "increase nail damage", then pressing esc. You’ll still need to reset the damage value though.

Editing save files

You can edit various values of save files. Below are different available methods.

Windows won't let me open the Mod Installer

Installer vanishes after downloading / loads a blank screen

This is commonly because one or more issues:

  • The installer may need to be run as Administrator (Right-Click it, and select "Run as Administrator")
  • The installer is being blocked / removed by built-in security software, such as Windows Defender

Multiplayer works by connecting to a server which is completely independent of anything other than what mods you have installed
So as long as mods work on both of your installations of the game it will work

MI2 and Scarab share a memory file, and you can't open MI2 once Scarab has been opened, or it won't work right

If you want to use an installer for 1.4, then you should use MI1 probably

Alternatively, you can reset the memory file before opening Scarab/MI2 each time, but that's kind of annoying, both because it's annoying to do, and because resetting it causes them to not know what mods you have.

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
