i think the special thing in hollow knight is it approaches the setting from a place of, 'what would make someone care about this world,' and then builds from that POV and makes great use of NPCs who're actually emotionally connected tot he world around them. the entire game just comes from such a place of love and joy, especially when it comes to quirrel, and when the tragic aspects of the story hit, the joy and the darkness get reconciled by quirrel's dialogue reframing it almost s though your exploration is a mourning process that this world both needs and deserves

like you can tell why the bugs of hallownest cared about their kingdom, you can feel like this was a world that was cared for in its prime, and is still full of wonder even as a dust-outline of something long gone

frankly it just helps too that everyone is a bug. both because like, there's just something ridiculous by nature about bug's building a civilization and city-state, but also they're not really human, and you can elevate, escalate, and isolate human ideas in a kingdom of bugs without the incredibly loaded baggage of, boy, sure are a lot of human corpses anywhere

i think there's also something about being surrounded by bug corpses to that makes me think of like, the most deeply abandoned houses you can imagine. like, when everything else dies, when houses or buildings get abandoned, bugs take over. so there's just this weird lonely desolate feeling to be in a place where even the bugs have all died and fossilized
