I’ve been thinking a lot about why I really want Silksong as much as I do. Aside from the normal reasons of knowing how high quality the game will be, there’s something about it that has brought me into this community beyond the want to play a good game. I’ve never wanted a piece of media to release as much as Silksong, and never before has waiting for a thing drawn me into a community so much. I was playing Hollow Knight today, doing the only thing I have left now, which is Pantheon 5 and Abs Rad practice. As I died over and over again to this one boss, I realized that I wasn’t having fun with Hollow Knight anymore. I knew the payoff would be great once I finally beat Abs Rad and then P5 in general, but it almost didn’t feel worth it; it felt like a chore, an obligation I have to myself to get all the achievements. I started thinking, “What would I give to be bad at Hollow Knight again. To know nothing about the game and experience everything for the first time and die to a boss over and over and have the time of my life.” And then I realized something; I can do that with Silksong. Hollow Knight is starting to feel less and less fun to me, but that doesn’t take away what it means to me as a game and as a memory. Everyone has a game, or maybe multiple, that change their life in ways they cannot explain, and that change their perspective of video games forever. For myself and thousands of others, Hollow Knight is that game, that game that you think of all the time, that you compare to every game you ever play: “This might be good, but it’s no Hollow Knight.”

I have games I’ve put far more time into, and games I think are technically better in many aspects, and even if I play games in the future that I have more fun with or I spend more time with they will never be Hollow Knight, because nothing can. It would be amazing to play it all over and not remember a thing, but that’s never going to happen…. except it can. Regardless of how good the game is, the simple fact is Silksong is the closest you can get to playing Hollow Knight again for the first time. That’s why sequels are so important, because it’s just more of what you already love. It’s the closest thing to experiencing the greatest game of all time, all over again. I’m going to be bad at Silksong, and I’ll have no idea where to go and I’m going to explore every crevice, find every secret, and die to every boss over and over again and it’s going to be great. I want to play Silksong so I can be bad at Hollow Knight again.
