i think the pieces of void becoming the vessels and the hollow knight mirror the wyrm becoming the pale king. as the wyrm, the pk wouldve known logically hallownest couldnt be saved and any attempt would be doomed, but as the pale king, with a name and identity, he'd become too emotionally invested and just kept trying to hold things together and save the kingdom, even when he knew by divine providence there was nothing that could be done

the entire thing is very bittersweet, i think. ari and will clearly care so much about the world, and that feeling comes across. i think the tendency with a souls-like fallen world setting is to just revel in, ahhhhh, little fucked up dude, the world is so fucked up, aint it. it's so focused on Being Tragic that it doesnt give you a reason to care about the tragedy in the first place. whereas with hallownest, largely through quirrel's interactions, you still get a strong sense of beauty and joy, and you understand why people cared enough about this kingdom in the first place to go to such lengths to perpetuate it. it almost feels like the act of exploring hallownest is a kinda mourning ritual, that ends in you accepting the kingdom's death and putting an end to its stretched out static existence by killing the radiance

There is also the issue with people always expecting more from a studio. Thus game companies need to hire more people, but prices and budgets havent grown with the demand thus devs get fucked and the games need to make money elsewhere (mircrotransactions)

usually in RTS you only have like Easy, Medium and Hard bots, but in Stronghold, you can basically pick with a bunch of different lord with their own Castle AI and Economy AI of varying difficulty

some Lords are fucking pathetic with shitty castles and only hires a specific bunch of units, while others has fucking absurd fortress that sometimes even clips the map while also hiring a fuckton of unit variety like crossbowmen to knights, but in addition the AI also had their unique personality which mocked you/messaged you (if youre theyre ally) and it made the game really enjoyable in single player

2 definitely improves on 1 by a very wide margin and is very nonlinear. you can explore the three areas and handful of bonus areas in any order and the movement system gives you lots of shortcut opporitunities
