Start by downloading the modding api, then, navigate to your game files. You probably know where they are if you downpatched to 1.2.2.1. In your game files, go down the path of (assuming windows)\Hollow Knight\hollow_knight_Data\Managed\, then drag the Assembly-CSharp dll file (the modding api), and place it in the Managed folder, select "Replace existing file" if prompted. Afterwards, create a new folder called Mods, inside the Managed folder, and place the dll files for the other mods into there

On Mac, you need to make sure that you take the Scarab app out of the Archive folder.
