hello everyone, I'm having a very irritating issue. I'm trying to run scarab, but no matter what I do, avg keeps quarantining the .exe file when it tries to run, even when I tell it to add an exception. I'm starting to think I'm gonna have to uninstall avg, install scarab, and then re-install avg, but I wanted to ask here first in case there was some other way to resolve this

🔸 Why do skins take so long to make/Why is making skins so difficult?
Making a skin involves redrawing every sprite relevant to the skin - at the very least, all the sprites that feature the Knight. That, alone, is over 500 sprites. More detailed skins, editing spells and HUDs can go up to over 850 sprites. All of these sometimes needs to be redrawn over and over. Depending on the complexity of the design, making a skin can take well over months of work to complete.

🔹 Where can I commission a skin, and how much would it cost?
You can ask in #art-discussion on this server, on in #recruit in the modding server linked in the pinned messages of #modding-discussion.
The price varies with the skin's complexity, but a simple one consisting only of the Knight's basic spritesheets will cost upwards of 100 USD and Euros/90 GBP, if only because of the sheer amount of time that needs to be spent on it. More complex skins and ones of higher quality would increase in cost.

A good way to get started is following one of these two videos by Megan. They go over important information about the creation process.

Common CK issues/fixes

  • Verify that the skin was installed correctly.
  • Ensure that you're enabling it from the Pause Menu, not the Main Menu.
  • If it doesn't apply, then you may need to reset your Global Settings for it. You can either manually do this by deleting the customknight.globalsettings files from your saves directors ( type ?tag saves in chat if you don't know where that is), or by using an automatic script from ?tag reset .

Bosses only need the room path if something in the background also changes (like Radiance's Halo, or Nosk's death mask) otherwise you can just use their hash and put them in global. The guide will explain how to do that.

This glitch can happen for a number of reasons make sure that all the reasons listed listed below don't apply to you.

🔹 Your game patch doesn't match the installer you used.

  • Scarab is made for patch 1.5.78+
  • Modinstaller 1 & 2 are made for version 1.4.3.2
  • there aren't installers for other patches.

🔹 Something didn't install correctly

  • Ensure that the installer is not still in a .zip file, and that it's not in your Downloads folder.
  • Run the installer as Administrator

Either load one of the backup saves (assuming you haven't saved more than ~3 times since then), or you'll have to save edit your save to change your spawn location.

Save Files
The save files for Hollow Knight are shared between all installs of the game, and are easily interacted with.

🔹 What do the save files looks like?

  • Hollow Knight save files are in the form of user#.dat, where # is the save slot for the file..
  • You can take a file named user3.dat and rename it to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot.
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer.

🔹 Reverting Backup files

  • You have save file backups that are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. Typically speaking, you will have your last three backups.
  • You can set a backup to be the real file by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup file.

🔹 Modded save files

  • If you are using mods, a modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). Both this file and the user#.dat are part of the save.

🔹 Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
  • For other operating systems, type ?saves into chat.

You can edit various values of save files. Below are different available methods.

  • Website: https://bloodorca.github.io/hollow/
  • QoL mod: If you open a save file with QoL installed, you'll have an extra save file called user#.json, which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • MoreSaves mod: With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the Main Menu.
  • DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod.

You also may be able to use the BenchwarpFix mod to be sent to Dirtmouth instead, but I'm not sure if that works with modern Benchwarp (because Benchwarp itself I think works slightly differently than when that mod was created)

@ Ismoil: IIRC, BenchwarpFix specifically fixed it for old BW.
I seem to remember someone trying to fix a Radiance Bench with BWF, and it not working, and I think that that's because modern BW sets your Bench info in the Modded Save data now

Hello! Sorry to bother you all, but I have trouble starting Hollow Knight after installing the Scarab Mod installer and the Custom Knight Mod. When i try to open the game an error message pops up and closes instantly, without me doing anything (see the added screenshot). I followed the pinned step-by-step video guide. I also have looked through the pinned messages and tried suggested solutions but nothing worked. Re-installing the Game and Mod also did not help.

How to use Scarab in Microsoft Store
🔹 First enter the Xbox app and move your mouse over Hollow Knight on the left bar.
🔹 Click the three points then click "Manage".
🔹 Go to the "Files" tab and select "Browse...".
🔹 Click Hollow Knight then Content, click the path bar and copy it.
🔸Run Scarab as admin and when it asks you for the path paste what copied before.

Alternate Method:
🔹 Click on your profile then "Settings"
🔹 Go to "General" tab and select "CHANGE FOLDER"
🔹 Look for a folder where you want to install the game (Preferably inside a folder in your desktop).
🔸 Copy the path bar, then run Scarab as Administrator and when it asks you for the path, paste what copied before.

After installing, in order to actually use the mod
When the mod is correctly installed, you should see it at the top-left of your main menu, with the other mods you have installed.

If the button is not there, then go into Options > Mods, and Disable the mod, and then re-enable it. You will also need to close the game entirely, and re-open it.

Save Files
The save files for Hollow Knight are shared between all installs of the game, and are easily interacted with.

🔹 What do the save files looks like?

  • Hollow Knight save files are in the form of user#.dat, where # is the save slot for the file..
  • You can take a file named user3.dat and rename it to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot.
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer.

🔹 Reverting Backup files

  • You have save file backups that are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. Typically speaking, you will have your last three backups.
  • You can set a backup to be the real file by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup file.

🔹 Modded save files

Ok, im here again. I tried installing the Impossible Any% mod, but i can't even get the DecorationMaster to run. I put the dll in a folder and ran the game because im supposed to get a DecorationMasterData folder, but when i load the game it says that the mod doesn't load

How to use Scarab in Microsoft Store
🔹 First enter the Xbox app and move your mouse over Hollow Knight on the left bar.
🔹 Click the three points then click "Manage".
🔹 Go to the "Files" tab and select "Browse...".
🔹 Click Hollow Knight then Content, click the path bar and copy it.
🔸Run Scarab as admin and when it asks you for the path paste what copied before.

Alternate Method:
🔹 Click on your profile then "Settings"
🔹 Go to "General" tab and select "CHANGE FOLDER"
🔹 Look for a folder where you want to install the game (Preferably inside a folder in your desktop).
🔸 Copy the path bar, then run Scarab as Administrator and when it asks you for the path, paste what copied before.

Scarab path folder needs to have Hollow Knight_Data folder inside

It depends on which level triggers which interaction with grimm, but I think the game only takes the amount of collected flames into account for triggering the fight (which is also something you can edit with debug). Also max level grimmchild is carefree melody, the "true" max level is the one before

edit: you need the correct grimmchild level too apparently
