I'm doing some digging right now and seeing what it takes a what most things are involved in.
data analytics, but actually i'd like to hear about any
I've no idea how to write my background in software engineering
well, I have written it before but it feels like I am writing it wrong
"i have been programming for 10 years now" sounds disingenuous when my first 3 years was learning how to code and 7 years writing bad code
write about your project and work experience, and what problems you solved and what value you gave to the customer
well, i have quite a lot to write about for projects, but for background, I am not sure what to write...
usually resume should give info about your skills and project and education and employment
im not sure what "background" you are referring to ?
maybe the industries in which I have interned in?
cover letter sorry i forgot to mention
i was advised to write a paragraph on "education and background"
What if since the job market is so bad right now and everyone's scared of getting into CS because of AI it actually helps the job market because people are not going into CS anymore which means less competition and stabilizes the job market mmm
i hope so, maybe i can get a really good career progression from fixing vibe codes
im not sure what you would write background seperately in a cover letter tbh. Its meant for stuff like why you want to do this etc etc
I see, I have never really questioned the advice I was given
Can anybody who understand of pc help me with something?
Another thing is, I don't know whether mentioning I have never used generative AI before is something that will improve or reduce my chances
I think so? But with the AI hype all around? It feels like I am getting points deducted for having never used gen AI before
cover letter shouldnt be a "remix" of your resume , like you shouldnt write a lot of stuff in cover letter thats already in your resume into your cover letter (including like , just giving all your education too )
its meant for more of like a , "why should they consider you , why you want to do this at all "
I see. Do you think it's better for me to prototype with this advice and ask another time when I have something to show?
you should see some sample cover letters , and then after you have seen a few you will get an idea of what points you need to write about
Well, I have written a lot before, ran through different versions with more than 10 people by now
if you want , you can post a censored version here so people can share what they think
the old one?
whichever one you are going to use
hmmmmm just looking for the one that actually got me an interview
I can't find the one that gave me an interview, so I just took a random one. I do note that I have to cut the length down... @kindred oyster
this is the cut down version ? damm
tbh this feels too long in itself
also it feels like , you have just .... wrote the resume in your cover letter , could just be me tho 🤷
this is the full fat version actually
i have tried shorter ones too, of course
yeah , i ... think it could do with a little less of information overload then
i was advised to write
- why i want to work with the company
- educational background
- projects
- soft skills
- ask for an interview
this is one that was written a while before the previous one
Can anybody who understads about pc help me with something
Perhaps if you ask in an appropriate channel instead of #career-advice
In phython help?
Is it python related? Then yes, if not then in #ot1-perplexing-regexing
for the background section
for the soft skills section
of course, the "why i want to work here" is going to be different for each cover letter
Hey I want some advice. On dms if possible. I don't want to talk openly.
I am currently doing a job but it's hard to mix in.
hm?
@hardy abyss your message was removed for recruiting
Hey guys! I just entered university and im planning to study either software engineering or AI & ML engineering, so some advised me that i should go software then specialise in AI and no need for double degree and my goal is to go in a demanded field worldwide with better opportunities, so can you guys advise me ?
hello world, kindly suggest some things I can do to prepare and become bullet proof in a python interview (beginner to intermediate). Some background , I used to be an investment analyst and also have about an years worth of coding experience. Mostly data wrangling and web scraping. I am returning to the job market after 7 years and I am a bit rusty. I have manage to land an interview which requires both my skills and I would like to put all my effort into preparing for it as best I can. I solved the practicle they gave me and am also solving the fundament series on codewars. Thanks in advance.
i would suggest doing some easy / intermediate leetcode questions as thats the common type of questions asked in any kind of entry level interview
Thanks @kindred oyster i ll check out leetcode 🙏

Ok ok sorry
hi guys is it possible to pivot to swe/devops after bdr/sdr if u have degree in cs + projects?
Which PyCon are you referring to?
it'd be nice to be able to read that too
Hey, i need some advice. In school im learning about HTML, but i want to learn languages for making games (Python, and eventually c++), i could study python at home and some at school, but im scared its gonna be too overwhelming to learn that many language at the same time, so im wondering if i should stick to the school stuff, or if i should try learning python too on the side
U wont get overwhelmed bc html is easy , u can learn python on the side easily
okay tysm
how to get a remote python developer job?
be really, really good
remote jobs arent for the average dev
same as any other job. apply with a good resume, and do well on the interview
the problem is that they're hard to find and have a lot of competition
it would be easier to apply to local jobs
sure. where to find companies
linkedin/indeed
apart from applying to jobs in a company, whom to approach?
what do you mean?
like do i need to connect with hiring manager in the respective company or get referrals from their existing employees
you should already have a contact in the company if you're going to ask them for a referral
referral begging shouldnt and doesnt work
i.e you have a friend in the company, you would just call up that friend and ask them if they'd be able to do you a favor
but you shouldn't find a random person who works there and ask them to refer you
yeah that reflects poorly. thanks for the advice. will continue the job hunt
however: asking a random person (a friend of a friend of a friend) if they'll share some insight about the company is reasonable. Just don't make it transactional (asking for something).
definitely. I will keep that mind
Any tips for those starting to learn Python in 2025?
try asking in #python-discussion
Is it python is good for upcoming future?
What are you learning right now?
something incredibly specific that it'd take longer to explain than it's worth.
Do you know python?
Yes, I've been working professionally for decades.
Nice! I am learning right now if i need any help in the future i will contact you. is that okay?
Somewhat related, i recently used Chad Gippity to explain my job to my kids
I don't do DMs, but you can always ask in this channel
Okay
My son has, more or less, told me I don't know what it's like to work hard.
And, I'm not even sure he's wrong 🙂
You mean it's not the other way around? heh
The hard part is explaining my job to my wife
oh, she knows I don't know what it's like.
What up y'all
anyone new to python?
Who is on here had career changer
You're prob looking for #python-discussion
I've switched jobs from one sub industry of tech to another. Does that count?
yeah like explain more specific detail like what position to other position
Why don't you go ahead and ask what you want to know specifically?
for instance, I am a former master ford mechanic for 15 years and now I am becoming a web developer with accessibilty this year
ok. I mean that's completely different from my situation then. I went from a guy who writes hardware test automation in the storage industry to a guy who writes hardware test automation in the wireless industry
ah i see, still interesting and respect that. You basically been coding
It more sounds like you just changed companies, lol
Right lol. Similar but different task
yeah pretty much ha. But still wildly different sets of domain knowledge so it was somewhat of a change
Alright next question but stupid....how much do you love python?
4
like this much 🫸 🫷
smh Gotta be more than that
lol
Sometimes coding in python while I was talking to my ex embrasses me, she was like oh what are you building, I was like uhmmm it's sort of making responsive and saving user input infor.....
she was like 👆
The real question is why are you still trying to impress your ex? Also...off topic lol
at some companies you get money if your referral gets hired. my friend at a big tech company has accepted referral beggers in his linkedin dms. idk if theyve ever worked out though. i myself never tried it because it just seems really cringey
Guys how do i learn thats game like i find tutorials boring and websites to use
hey guys is this right?
Helloworld("print")
No its "print ("Hello world")"
anyone can tell me where to host a website
Yeooo big daddy is back, Im here
Right here
tell me what career you had before and now
is there anyway to make money with python before 18
no its def print = hello world() int print""
yes
How
dm
Bro just say it
ok work
I can’t I’m under 18
python work lol
Where
cant explain more bc u wont dm
Thank me later
Alright done
I asked about this already but is a 1 year internship in project management worth it as an engineering student who doesn't have any experience or strong gpa to obtain an internship?
Any experience is (generally) better than no experience.
even if it costs me a year of no studying? I can't shake being bummed about that
A full year of no studying? I'm not sure I follow.
I'll be doing the internship instead of studying
Usually internships are much shorter, and something you do during summer or semester-long breaks, not a full year.
At least, where I am from
This is different its through a program @fringe sphinx Basically for poor people or losers who don't have any better options
Well, take the best opportunity you've got.
project management is a valuable skill and a good opportunity to learn. And nothing is stopping you from studying on your own.
Indeed there is not
Hey guys .. im new to python can anyone help me .. any friends.?
I was about to tell it
is this a resume or a cover letter?
guys, i have something very VERY important to tell.
cover letter
also you were interning for 3.5 years?
people....
these are variants actually, im only picking 1 of the paragraphs under each heading
people hide thier daughters from me..
nah
yea, it was during COVID times, and my company allowed me to work between (online) classes
imagine if t echjoice is in this server
I think most of the background paras are good, all of them have some context, you can deduplicate them and merge
each variant is meant for a different job actually
my script picks whichever variant is most suitable for that particular job
I see, maybe mention that? because as a recruiter 3.5 yrs of internships can sound a bit weird ig, some additional context would be nice?
this is an example of what the script will output so it's only picking 1 paragraph from each "section"
as in, specific to the company?
ur portfolio website part has some stats like 1s load time etc, similar metrics for the other 2 would be nice
yeah like why are you an ideal candidate
im planning to write a paragraph manually for the company-specific "reason i want to work here" it would be the first para
based on past statistics, about 5 to 6 a day, so I merely have to write it into a spreadsheet and the script will include it
eh, gotta give it my best still
it is, i wrote the first version of this script about 6 months ago? because ive burnt out by then. ive been adding more and more things over time and now ive switched from latex to typst
like a script to scrape jobs, and compile a latex to pdf
it's really demoralizing to look through jobs to see the positions that I am really confident in, yet knowing that I would not get a callback for
heh back in the days i got 2 offers out of 2 applications for an internship 🤣
now i gotta use a spreadsheet and automation
yup yup
How much u guys earn from part time ?
Guys, what is the best way of learning AIML ?
Going to university for it
AIML isn't one thing. It's many things. Many fairly diverse and unrelated things too.. the way you learn anything is by starting: pick one topic of interest and combine some reading about theory with practical coding projects
are u currently involved into any particular niche?
Yes, it's all niches all the way down
I tend to stay in the 'data' side and less on the aiml side, but the distinctions are blurry
i see, currently i know a bit of python only, nothing too crazy, so i am confused how should i start my approach?
That's fine: think of it this way: your goal should be to learn something new. It sounds silly but: it doesn't matter what you learn, because you need practice solving problems. Just like going to the gym as a beginner- anything you do will make you stronger.... once you get strong then you'll want to have a better plan
yeah true
So, if you want to make a game, make a silly game. Or a website. Or try an ml project using PyTorch. Or make a chatbot. Whatever
Or a calculator. Or a puzzle game.
currently i was trying to enter the niche which will pay me the most but now i am thinking that i change my perspective.
I've never been able to predict what skills my next job would use
i also wanted to write a research paper to impress the universities so i can do masters there
It turned out my 'data' skills were the most useful... everybody has data problems
yeah
Best bet is to try to get to know the professors. Volunteer. Attend any graduate seminars or research groups, if you can, and read papers from the profs and cited by them
appreciate it mate
i don't think so!
alright
!resources - we do have a page for learning resources though. It is linked in the embed below. If you have any general questions feel free to ask in #python-discussion

mvp first then product market fit? or the other way around?
How will you test for product market fit if you don't have a 'product'?
Hello im going to uni and i want start coding now but i cant choose. First way start a project(proably a chat app) or go with education series
Im closer start with project
@unreal moth u blocked me ,
Do not discuss your interpersonal issues in this server. If that person has blocked you, do not try to contact them in this server.
damn we cant do anything in this server 💔
there have been several thousand messages today, so apparently people are finding things to do on this server that are allowed.
only python talk
we cant dm people , we cant find python partner , we cant talk about ours dms discussion we can only talk about python
How disastrous is it that I'm consistently late or miss one class per week?
What you're saying will cause problems in the long run. The people managing the server should consider every possibility.
it's not ideal. but it is also up to you how much you care
I'm not sure if I should take this class my mind is telling me no.
Doing something for 8 hours is rough. I'm taking 1-2 minute breaks every now and then.
Hopefully my employer will allow for it.

hi ev
hello i am looking for job
you can ask for job-searching advice here, but you can't ask for jobs directly.
do you want to get a resume review?
Hi
yo
Not looking for advice, just going to rant a bit.
14 months ago, I approached my manager about my intention to move to the Netherlands branch and gave her my deadline.
8 months ago, got a new manager (previous one unfortunately passed away), actually got traction after speaking to him. Spoke to the executives in NL branch, met them in person (I was in NL at the time), and me not having 5+ years of experience was biggest hurdle, but was told we'd put out feelers with my CV and see if they could place me in August, which is just before my deadline. Was given some advice on what I can focus on right now to improve my chances (biggest focus being my Dutch proficiency)
Today, I reached out to the executive again. Was told point blank that I don't have enough experience and they can't place me.
I don't mind the company not being able to place me. If the market doesn't allow for it, it is what it is. But I do feel a bit frustrated that I was told there was a chance and that they'll see what they can do just for it to be shut down on me. I do feel like they could have communicated that it's impossible to place me with my level of experience at the start of the year already.
My manager said we'll have a chat about the way forward. So I'll still see if anything comes from that, or if it's just to checkup on my personal plans moving forward. He does not make the types of decisions to move people to a different branch, but maybe he does still know of something else. We do have some employees working from the Netherlands for our local clients instead of being placed with a Dutch client.
Had a similar thing where was trying to move and get a visa which company supported, and then they got acquired and my plans went up in a poof of smoke
although tbh glad I didn't complete it before they got acquired, would have been a nightmare
I did. Went through 60 applications earlier this year. I know 60 isn't a lot, but since I'm not an EU citizen, I can only apply to companies that can sponsor visas. I did not get to a single interview. Right now the market isn't there to sponsor people unless they have a few more years of experience.
The 30% ruling only applies to salaries above a certain threshold. I am unlikely to be earning above that threshold since I'm not looking for the tech giants in Amsterdam. I'm looking for jobs in the Utrecht area since that's where I'll be living. That threshold is the average senior developer salary in Utrecht. I am not a senior.
They don't really have those incentives. Local employers work for local clients. Employers in the Netherlands work for European clients. Who pay a lot more. So I believe the company still earns around the same percentage on top of each employer. Possibly a bit less due to more insurance and stuff that has to be covered by employer in the Netherlands
No. My Dutch isn't at a level where I can do a job in the language. That's still going to take more time
Doesn't really change the fact that there is a minimum salary requirement and that salary is quite a bit above the average for someone with 3.5 YoE
I speak and write at A2 currently and reading and listening comprehension is at B1. That's not enough to do a job in Dutch or an interview in Dutch
My partner's company was also still hiring internationally until recently. Past 2 years they only hire senior engineers on HSM visa. Junior and Medior is only local hires
Regardless, I'm starting with a partner visa process end of next month. So I won't have to worry about minimum salary requirements for a company to sponsor
I said Utrecht area, but I'm not in Utrecht. I'm in one of the smaller surrounding areas
9292 gives a time of 1.5 hours to Amsterdam CS. Add some time to get to actual office. That's a bit too far for me. I'll obviously increase my radius of where I look for jobs if I find nothing once I move over on the partner visa
20 minute bike to closest station. 1 hour train to Amsterdam CS
As I said, will increase radius once I'm here and if I'm unable to land anything closer
My timeline has been end of next month for the past year. Not enough time for that by now. Going to go the partner visa route
But yea. Main thing is that I would have liked to spend more time on personal projects and less time on learning Dutch over the past few months, as well as casually kept applying to a few jobs per week. Was definetly demotivating to not even get to any interview when I was applying earlier this yer though
Still want to be fluent in Dutch at some point, but in the shorter term I think some more work on some of my projects to build up my CV would have been worth more
Interviews are getting out of hand. This is not the worst I have seen / heard. But the worst I have personally done.
I have two technical interviews. The first was 1h. This next one is 2h. If I had a job right now, I don't know how I would possibly be able to interview with this company.
I mean, don't get me wrong. The first interview was very chill. No pressure. 1 hour was given so that you are not stressed for time. It took me a fraction of that time.
This isn't me saying that the company I am interviewing with is doing anything wrong. But rather ,,, how would someone do better? It is a hard problem. But there has gotta be a better way? Right?
I love and like The Netherlands, very beautiful country
Hi everyone I Have good skill in Python, Sql, data analytics, and python libraries like NumPy, Pandas, matplotlib, Sk-learn, basic Machine.

!warn @woven falcon Do not copy and paste answers from LLMs.
:incoming_envelope: :ok_hand: applied warning to @woven falcon.
single and final warning on that.
yo was wondering why that rule was implementef
So we dont get AI slop in the server
hm
because at the point you are using LLMs to generate answers for a discord community you have no idea what you are talking about and whether you are applying any concepts correctly
and it's just a pain in the ass when there is a conversation going on and someone dumps in a 20 line long LLM response ending in "want me to focus on yada yada?" and tries to pass it off as if they know what they are talking about
unlike a lot of places that ban AI content it's not necessarily because of plagiarism, misinformation or anything like that, it's just not the right tool to engage in communication in a discord server and 90% of the uses we see here that we moderate are people that are fundamentally very out of their depth and are making conversations worse
ohhhh
Hello everyone!! I want to become cybersecurity specialist, im studying python fundamentals and bash rn, is it right way to start?
Btw it is not my first language, i know c#
do you guys suggest any real projects to start with pyspark?
im learning for my new position
but havent applied it in a project yet
since im only starting next month, i was trying to find ideas that could be useful
If I want the best possible change to land a SWE job for 2026, how many jobs a day should I apply to? I have already applied to 50 jobs so far
so umm start with basics like loops , operators , list , if-else condition and later go with oops concept etc since i'm lowky moving on like this
its up to how many youre willing to do per day. i did like 40 per week when i was applying. but if you dont get any interview after like 150-200 apps, your problem is probably your resume/projects (or lack thereof)
Hii
I agree with 90% of the concepts here. But there are two difficult points that are missed based on my experience as team lead:
( 1 ) Most people like to be told what they should be working on next - trying to come up with new ideas of what to do that moves an app forward, or implements the right paper, is very time and nerves consuming.
( 2 ) Keeping track of what everyone else is working on in order to be able to do ( 1 ) is also very time and nerves consuming. And it is worse if everyone is struggling to plan ( 1 ) far enough to be able to tell the others about their ( 2 ).
A manager's role is to solve those two problems. And nothing else. And I stress the nothings else! Maybe approve some holidays. But the role of a manger is to keep track what everyone in the team is doing and making sure that everyone knows what everyone else is doing and why. Not in order to report the findings to someone, but in order to make the decision of what to do next easier for each team member
Hey guys i don’t know if this i the right group but i have a queestion, where Can i as a new Started IT Company find disptch/projects or task for like couple of hours or some days in Germany?
Access point installation cable management server rack setup and stuff like that
I'll argue that the trick here is that it can be a cognitive bloat. But it can also be a cognitive helper.
E.g.
Bon: Let's go for a coffee
Alice: Sure
Bob: So, how are the prompts for the literature data? I remember you wanted to pull Elsevier into it
Alice: I wanted. But Elsevier makes things worse. I will try the Springer API next
Bob: Charlie said the same on his parsing of the texts. He has all the Springer data downloaded already. Have a chat with him. You may not need the API
Bob is the manager one would like to have. He didn't tell Alice to use Charlie's work. He just made Alice aware that she has options. Bob's actions here are work, and add a lot of speed to the teams work.
Of course most managers out there are quite useless. But there are good ones.
Yes. That's should be what we call a "manager". We should be calling it a "coordinator" instead. Some people are amazing at coordinating, some people are terrible at it.
This is probably as well related to the informal hierarchy idea. One can only be a good coordinator on trust. I.e. informal hierarchy. People need to believe in what he/she says
anybody knows how to fix this?
import random
number = random.randint(1, 100)
attempt = 0
max_attempt = 10
while attempt < max_attempt :
attempt = attempt + 1
a = int(input(f"guess your number (1-100),your attempt number is {attempt} , max attempt is 10: "))
if a < number :
print("number is too low!")
elif a > number :
print("number is too high")
elif a > 100 or a < 1 :
print("your guess is out of range dont waste you attempts")
elif attempt == max_attempt :
print(f"the number was : {number}")
else :
print("correct!!! you won!!! ⭐")
break
here is the code
What's about
number guessing game
I recently chose program as my future career the only thing i can do is to flex about 😭
It is hard to even tell how hard it is to get a job. It's not like I take a test and see that my score is 800 and that I need to study and improve to 900 to get a job.
There are so many mixed messages:
"AI is replacing everything" vs "AI is just a tool" vs "AI makes things harder because it writes junk code".
"1000+ applications and failed" vs "I did this trick and got 5 interviews and 3 offers"
"Networking works wonders" vs "Networking is only an option later career"
"Oversaturation of people in tech" vs "High wages in tech indicating demand".
So my best bet is to think from a first principles perspective:
- Job applications put credentials as your first foot forward, networking puts social/communication skills as the first foot forward. It is odd how little technical skills are weighted, except maybe later in the process.
- The process of submitting a job application and tailoring a resume is (A) a common task (B) a fairly boring task and (C) a computer task. This combination makes it is perfect for AI.
- The nature of the search algorithms that rule the web are to amplify a small number of voices and leave most people "screaming into the void". This makes it hard for most individuals to be heard while also making it hard to find these companies as a job seeker.
- Other factors such as mental health are very important because without them people will not be effective at functioning.
Given these, it isn't all that clear what even to do? A couple of general guidlines:
- When sending out applications, it makes sense to use AI or other tools or use some service. Just be careful about infosec concerns!
- When networking, everyone should be building relationships and trying to improve social skills. The gap between the people who "only" above average socially and those "room charmers" who really excel is very large.
many average people are still getting cs jobs it isnt THAT hard
i think you are thinking too much about it tbh
I applied to every opportunity i saw
Got some interviews after a couple weeks
tbh if you apply to everything you end up succeding and with a job its easier to find a good job
People focus on the unemployment rate for CS grads being high, but the underemployment rate is really low. I would much rather have that than the opposite
best way to make money in python before 18
there really aren't any options that are very likely to work.
Best way to make money before you're 18 is probably going to involve you sweating
Uh, what are you referring to?
manual labor
jesus....
What are you referring to?

!res I recommend going through one of these resources to learn and just following their lesson plan. learning programming is a really big task, but if you stay consistent day by day, you'll be amazed how far you get
The Resources page on our website contains a list of hand-selected learning resources that we regularly recommend to both beginners and experts.
800 or so.
Yes I had more success with networking and continue to do so as my main strategy.
I made a database (not a spreadsheet, but same idea) but I got so few interviews that there wasn't much data to learn from.
Also, my automation wasn't that good. I wonder what AI tools would be best?
like if you apply to jobs that have already received 500 resumes, the odds are against you
It's a good strategy to avoid these. But no one on this forum seems to know how to find places with less than 100 or so applications.
@pine sleet
i think you are thinking too much about it tbh
Maybe I should just keep meeting people and hope things work out? Not worry about the details. I got my last job that way.
The numbers varied widely, but lower number applications did not seem to help, not sure why, maybe it under-counted them because you had to follow a link to the website?
The trouble is I have to somehow condense 10+ pages of project descriptions down and am stuck. I am working on it however.
yeah. but if you have a good resume you'll be getting callbacks
My resume will not be that good however. Very little industry expirence.
so then you face the same problem as people applying for internships or fresh CS grads. the advice is still the same - you need a good resume, even if you don't have much industry experience
have you posted your resume here, gotten feedback, and acted on it?
you can also track different versions of your resume to see which gets more callbacks
I could post all the summaries of my projects, but I nee dto condense them down and it is hard.
no, have you posted your current resume in this channel for review?
Not yet. Once I condense all these things I can do so.
you can post what you have already and people can help you condense it
(version control it! and tag the PDF with current version and mark that in the spreadsheet)
hey
Guys i got a big project API about a 10k users expected i wanna to use something good easy to code for my team and for the AI what is the best python framework to do this job
10k is honestly pretty sizeable. What is your API doing?
I mean auth/ Handel Contracts / Calling Open ai to extract infos from our data and fill contreact
Django's probably a pretty good bet
what about fast api, I mean what is the best thing about django

Hello, I am starting my second year of university in September. My major is computer science. After graduating I would like to become a software engineer because it pays wells, the job requires alot of programming, and I think it is a stepping stone into lower level software/programming jobs. For extra information the university I go to is not that good (I go to it because it is located in my city already and its cheap), however it does have co-operative (co-op) education (4 month work terms i think like internships) and I plan to try to get a co-op job. I currently have a undergradute GPA of 90 so I think I have a good chance at getting one. My summer break is almost over but during it I was learning about computer architecture (did nand2tetris part one and currently starting CS:APP chapter 4) (im doing this just because I want to learn more about how computers work), and for the past month have been working on a react frontend project and will eventually use (and learn) java spring for the backend. Overall I think what I am doing is pretty good, however school is starting soon now and I was wondering what should I be doing in my free time in order to increase my chances of getting a software engineering job when i graduate? Also during breaks (such as one-week, winter, and summber breaks) what should i be focusing on then?
TL;DR - In university, want to be a software engineer, how sould i be spending my free time?
Also the reason i said so much was because i just wanted to give some background on myself if it at all helps
doing projects, open source, clubs
Has anyone here participated in hackathon ?
Helo everyone IM newbie
Can someone please Guide me
I work at a community health center I really want to learn coding Can someone guide me?
Yo, im doing a software engineering degree next year, ive done a foundation programming couse in the past which has given me basic basic python knowledge as well as syntax handling and psuedocode experience. Ive recently started to code again and ive made some basic scripts so far including, a number guessing game, and a rock paper scissors game. Can someone help me and suggest some longer term projects that would help for a resume whilst also building python experience? (and yes i do eventually want to go to c++. just want to get really good at python first)
It depends on what you want to learn and do with coding. I've seen people recommend the "Automate the Boring Stuff" book, so perhaps start there: https://automatetheboringstuff.com
It will teach you how to make everyday stuff easier with programming and maybe give you ideas for bigger projects.
Of course, that's just one of the options. There are other fine books and courses - just pick one and stick with it.
A Page in : Automate the Boring Stuff with Python
Hi everyone, this is my first ever Python project (first ever coding project tbh) and I wanted to share what I’ve been working on. I'm super proud of it.
It’s called BeaconBridge. The idea came from a problem console players (PS5, Xbox, Switch) face in Minecraft Bedrock: you cannot type in custom servers. The only way is to trick the game into thinking a server is a LAN world so it shows up in the Worlds tab. Most existing apps that do this are either full of ads or locked behind a paywall, so I decided to build my own desktop version.
What it does:
Lets you set up presets with a server name, IP, port, and broadcast interval
Broadcasts that server on your LAN so your console detects it as a joinable world
Start and stop broadcasting with one click
View status updates and logs directly in the app
How it works:
Written in Python 3
GUI built with PyQt5, styled to look like a modern desktop app
Uses socket broadcasting to replicate the packets Minecraft listens for when searching LAN worlds
Packaged with PyInstaller into a full installer so it works like a normal Windows application
Why I built it:
I was tired of using third party mobile apps that show ads, ask for subscriptions, and don’t feel reliable. I wanted a clean, user friendly, free tool that I could install on my (or others) PC's and use whenever I wanted to host a server for friends on console (or just play my server on my PS5).
This was a big learning experience for me and I am excited to share it. I would love feedback from other Python developers, especially on improving the code structure and packaging.
My question is: is this something worth putting in my portfolio for once I finally get to the point where I am ready to chase a career?
This isn't a channel for advertising, but - to your career question: Yes, list your best projects on your portfolio. This would be an appropriate portfolio project.
lol

i want to make some money off programming. i know a lot but i dont have a lot to show for it. also i dont know where to realistically look to make money. im also under 18 so i cant use a lot of the freelance sites
besides freelance seems so horrendously saturated
There isn't really a way that is a different thing from freelancing.
And you've identified the problem with freelancing.
I only know of a handful of people who made any amount of money from programming as a teenager. Most people I know got their first "programming dollar" from an internship, which are offered to university students
ouch
i couldnt go to uni this year for financial reasons
i wanna make some money to help me sell things
making money to make money haha
Wsp giys is there any software engineer
Just ask what you want to ask instead of waiting for someone to come by
Guys what language should I leanr if my goal is to be a software engineer
python is a good introductory language
Are you a software engineer
Hi guys, please as a teenager learning how to code, how do I test my knowledge
I'm learning python
To some degree. You're only 16 and Python is a great introductory language. It doesn't matter what language you learn, a lot of programming concepts exist in every language. Python is simple enough to learn that you can focus on the programming concepts, and then it will be easier later on to learn a more complicated language like C++
If I learn c++
I tried python and it seemed easy cause it has some logic
every language has logic. That's mostly what programming is
just because it's "easier" doesn't mean it's bad. Python is one of the most widely used languages in the world. I can guarantee you that you won't be set back if you learn it
To me c++ is more complicated
A ferrari is more complicated than a honda civic. That doesn't mean it's better.
They each have pros/cons
Can you tell me
I'm saying things will be a lot smoother if you start with Python as opposed to C++
I'm not saying don't learn C++
tell you what?
Pros and cons
python is "good enough" for most tasks, but it isn't compiled and is way less verbose than other languages, so development time is much quicker
You could code the same thing in python and C++ and the C++ one might run a few seconds quicker, but it took you 2 more days to develop. Which would you rather have?
When speed actually matters, then you won't be using python
Distribution is also a factor. Because python isn't compiled, it mean you need python to run it, but that also means it's quite easily cross platform
@humble sage does that help?
If I want it to build a carrer?
Both are valuable
Also the game in your bio is urs?
yes
What code did u used?
The gameplay?
the gameplay is C#
How long did it took you to code it
I'm not the only one on the team, but we've been at it for many years
it's a side project though. We all have full time jobs outside as well
How long did it took
We started in 2017, but it has evolved over the years
so we often have to throw things out to rebuild and make it better
This is off-topic for this channel
oops
How long did you worked in it
Since 2017
How much hours a day and how many people
Depends. Sometimes a few hours, sometimes more, sometimes less
We have a core team of about 5-6 people but we've grown a bit lately
Is your job in coding
Yes. I work in game dev and build pipelines
What is pipeline
It's how we get all of the work from the 3d software into the game. Games have a massive amount of files to manage and someone needs to keep it organized and efficient
So you plug the c++ code with python to create softwarez
There's no c++
Didnt you said 3d?
AFAIK A pipeline in general can just refer to some path of data from one source to another. Usually with many different intermediary steps and transformations along the way
I make sure all the characters, art, animation, textures, etc make it properly into the game structure
Can we go in dms so we dont bother other people?
No, this can be helpful for other people to read too
Oh do you work from home? Or physically
We use 3d software to create all of our art and animations
I work from home
Are you in europe?
Not currently. I'm a nomad though so I move all around the world
Like a tour? Also is your salary like those that they show in tiktok?
I don't know anything about tiktok
They say 70k a year is your salary near it?
hello
70k...what?
Hello
This is what they say?
In what currency?
They really say a lot of things.
Usd
Turkish Lyras? Canadian Dollars? Heads of Cattle?
Oh man, that'd make a lot of tacos
hey whatsup
70k heads of cattle would be worth millions i'm sure
Can someone say where they are in real life(salaries(
it depends heavily on where you live
Remote?
Yeah but...what use would it be for you?
~$165k base with 30-40k bonus
My office is in Boulder, CO
13 YOE
Remote ?
it really depends on the grade. https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/lsddcbs.pdf
unfortunately not any more. Was hybrid for years but now we're fully back int he office
Do you run the bolder boulder
Bro 160k are very good
I have a couple times but not in over a decade
Is money the only reason you want to do programming?
It's enough. I also get my medical premiums covered 100% which is actually worth quite a bit
No I kinda like computers
My last job would actually sponsor 50 people to do it every year
I make enough that I can travel the world while I work so that's good enough for me
Are you in middle or high class?
Depends what country I'm in 🤷
If you were in usa
I have no idea how I would classify that
Where do you draw the line here?
Do you live comfortably like rich?
hi
I'm not rich by any means but I'm doing ok
May I ask if you want respond what car do you drive
zomg lol
Oh yeah you travel
People have different measures of success my friend
What do you have?
I don't worry much about money but I don't live in luxury
Nice
the only measure of success thats relevant is whether you are financially independent
So this is my point exactly. I don't give a crap what car i drive so i drive stuff around 20 years old
What is your measure of success
I also have 5 kids, so my nicest vehicle is a 2016 (or is it 19? idk) nissan NV 12 passenger van
I'm very happy in my life. That's success to me
If my kids are alive and not in jail when they're 18, then i'll consider myself somewhat successful
5 kids suddenly making that 160k a bit less 😅
you have no idea
Oh as we say here in greece:may they live for you
Greece is very lovely
Have you ever been here?
I lived in Chania last year
For how much?
2 months
Did you lived comfortably
It was a heat wave but otherwise yes
I have also been there was it summer?
Yes. June/July
♥️ my eldest is 18. I feel you.
Did you went in any beaches
Yes, only Nea Chora
You lost the beaty of crete
It was too hot to go anywhere. 40+ every day
Oh do you know patras
Nope
Peloponnese if you know kolokotronis
Hi, any advice for people looking for internship on how to get referrals?
Know people, or know how to find people, aka go to tech conferences and events
What sort of people can give me a referral? I’ve mostly heard that I should try to connect with hiring managers.
I think anyone and everyone is probably your best bet
that being said, I don't think referals are super common unless you're well aquainted with someone at the company you're applying for
asking someone you don't know for a referal doesn't normally change a lot or get a response imo
Hm
personally I wouldn't refer anyone who I don't know enough about them and their skills to know if they're going to be suitable or any good
Other than referrals, would there be any other way to boost my chances of a recruiter seeing my CV?
go to tech conferences and events
How should I effectively use such opportunities? I could network per say, but i really don’t know how that could increase my chances
talk to people, you never know who you're going to talk to
you meet all sorts there, and if you a both interested in learning new things and discussing what you've learnt yourself or things you're interested in it can open a lot of doors
it'll also just improve your social skills in general and that is reason enough to go tbh
Hm, alrr
that being said, you shouldn't go there solely with the intention of getting a interview or internship, you do have to actually engage with people and interests
yeah, thanks a lot for the advice
Is AI dominating the Python job market?
Dominating? Eh maybe. But it's definitely prevalent from what I see
I feel like this question has been asked many times, so I’m sorry
Ok, I feel like there’s AI for basically everything now
I’m predicting that soon AI jobs will become less and less popular
Yeah people are finding lots of uses for it.
AI is good for prograamer if you see it like a advantage !
Yes, I know
Yeah we just need to all adapt and use it to enhance our jobs
I’m not quite sure how to use it though
we can do things faster then before
There are multiple ways to look at this. Lots of people want AI jobs. And, there are many types of AI jobs. And AI is being used in many non AI jobs. It's hard to answer such a broad question
👍
You’re right, the problem is I want to be a Python programmer and I’m just not into the AI game
But I’ll figure things out, thanks for your feedback
if you come in the Ai game it will be more easier to learn python like me it also help me alot to learn python i am also new in it !
Breadth, not depth, is how you get good. Learn a little about a lot
(One project at a time)
is germany is a good country to settele in for job market ?
hey there folks
hi
dued any idea how to get my vc on?
Hey i want to learn python how can i start?
Ask in #python-discussion
guys is this certificate worth to pay for it? https://pll.harvard.edu/course/cs50s-introduction-programming-python
no, certificates are basically worthless. the actual course has good information in it though
what's the roadmap from python to data analyst?
i wanna start with programming and stuff before moving to other stuff in the future
Hey guys im new to like everything i just want to learn i feel like this would be a nice skill as i use my computer alot and honestly dont understand coding or anything as all you see like in tv is just a black and green screen with random words that appear is there a youtube channel or something to just get started learn basics?
hey
i have also started ,just know how to print etc
Start in #python-discussion . This is the careers channel.
I would recommend you to learn python because i like it, but if you just want to use your computer better you should learn how to use your terminal, it allows you to trully handle the computer beyond basic settings, and it is a good thing to know if you start programing, but it is quite boring to learn at the start, mostly memorization for the basics. So when starting out just ask an ai for commands and how to do basic things until you remember sintax, and if you want to master it there was a powershell video made by the creator of powershell that was like 6 hours long and explained everything
Excuse me sir, this is career discussion
Hi, this is a #career-advice . See our rules and stay on topic, thx @burnt egret
How many years can it take for a beginner to learn everything in computer science that they are capable of building tech startup or solving problems that generate money?
'Can it take' is a broad question.
But, many people study Cs for 4 years and get a job (that generates money)
i need help
hear me
so im doing a dc server and a mc server (minecraft server) and i cant find anyone is there anyone that can help me without payment?
@fringe sphinx
I have no idea what you're asking, but this is 'careers' channel on a programming discord server. Maybe find another server that's more relevant
Kindly send me a message for more details
That's very sus. We have plenty of resources, ask in #python-discussion
lemme say it in more details
No thanks. It's not relevant here
so im doing an discord server and a minecraft server the video game but i need help and i cant is there anyone can help without payment
Again, this is not the place to ask
my freind suggested me this server
Read the channel description, Minecraft is not relevant here
Surely there is a Minecraft discord server

Anyone in deep web app stuff with python
Uhh hello everyone,
Currently a student studying a course teaching full stack web app production. I have my sights on sde then working up to ml engineering. Wondering if anyone can recommend me some ml maths I can slowly start learning
was this coded with python?
Check the pins in #data-science-and-ml , there's some good recs there
Thank you
Hello
hi bud
Hi, i am making a cv project in python, and i chose product stock management because i like the problem and i just wanted to do something i enjoy to learn, but even if the project is good, does a project like that get checked out by recruiters when you send a cv? because it is the most popular CV project from what i've seen, and i heard there a lot of vive coded mess in that domain
Any project you make and publish is a good look on github.
If you want to go beyond that, try make projects that involve ai or something ai cannot replicate. 👍
"involve ai" is a really good idea for job application creation, however if you do do this watch out for "red teaming" ai term, because people can be exploiting it for vulnerabilities.
What is red teaming
Where 90% of code is js ai?
nah g
its hacking the AI pretty much, people can make your brand if AI-integrated give free items, products or service etc.
chat-gpt 4o can be red-teamed, and there are communities actively working on it for gpt-5.
I see that is very interesting
It's good to have a breadth of projects in different subjects, for a company to take a chance on you, you need to demonstrate you have the ability to learn different technologies. Preferably try to do unique projects but yeah you just need to be pumping projects out
And they need to be actually meaningful projects, not React Todo list YouTube tutorial #537
go to google, and type basi red teaming 😉
would anyone be interested in making a community for freelancing python with me?
Okay, thanks for the responses, it looks like i shouldnt worry abt it
It's not about the nature of the project. It's about the 👏 demonstrated 👏 skills 👏
guys, I want to be AI/ML engineer by studying computer science. Do you guys think it is a good career choice?
sure
I heard people saying, it is better to also have a master's degree
that too
the more educated, the more opportunities
I would hope not
there was a guy in youtube saying he finished cs program in 2 years and landed on a really nice company that pays 200k
- The magic of the Internet is anyone can claim anything
- This would be a textbook case of confusing the metric for the goal
well yeah
ong
and I guess this kind of people have a lot of friends that helps them ha
acquaintance = job
Let's run that thought experiment:
let's imagine someone speed run their degree to get any job. That will usually imply they aren't good at their job since they miss 50% of the learning. And thus either get stuck at entry level or get fire 2 months later for performance issue
And that's all assuming they got their target role, not just any role
there is no shortcut nor magic
Hi everybody, My name is Azan Khaliq. I am from Lahore, Pakistan. I am a 17 year old teen, who is eager to learn, has problem solving skill and good at communication. I am learning programming for 1 and a half year and leaning python for 4 months and till now i am quite good at building cli apps, debugging code, object-oriented programming and numpy as well and currently I am learning pandas. My goal is to be a AI/ ML expert.
based
okay yeah you have a point
not really but some cs programs are flexible enough that they can allow you to choose maximum course load for the first 2 years, so you're done with almost all the required coursework except some graduate level courses.
might leave you free for research or internships if your school allows that - you do get your degree after completing 4 years though like it's standard
(will probably be extremely intensive and recommended against but I know a few people who did that)
ohh I see
The value of a degree is the learning, not the paper
if you try to speedrun it to get the paper at the expense of the learning, you will hit a wall sooner or later
I’d say I’m ‘based’ on my experience with self-learning and building projects. I actively research roadmaps in my field, use AI tools for guidance, and apply what I learn by creating Python projects and practicing regularly.
yeah, these are cool projects!
Thanks👍
yea no I really do not want that, I know that the more projects you do over the time the more you will be ready for the job
and the cs program itself not a program that you can easily finish that fast
so it was just interesting to hear someone finished it in 2 years
People can say a lot of things. Not all of it has the same value 😉
What about you
I am uber based
nice quote
oh how old are you bro
I am a 21 years old tech recruiter for a tech company
which company
uuu nice
I like to keep an air of mystery
I agree
That's okay
what is your intro
what do you mean by that
I meant to your intrduction about your field
Okay and i have my first day at college tomorrow
ohh please share your first day experience with us
sure
in which country are you studying
Pakistan
good luck then!
and what is your country
canada
okay so currently you are not doing anything
last year high school student
okay nice
what are your future plans about carrer
AI/ML engineer
yeah that's same
yeah
so what are you studying in the high school
normal high school classes
And have you done something extra like self learning
Hey guys anyone into freelancing? Kindly dm me if yes..
Hello, can anyone suggest me an institute where I can learn Python & data science properly with placement support?
Hi are you new too in python
yes
@gleaming oyster Do you want to go to an instituion physically or you are looking for an online plateform?
hi i want to increase the dopamine for coding any help
That's great!
Don't burn yourself out already - a new job comes with hard work, especially given you relocated for it, but take care of yourself too
I finally made my linkedIN account and im gonna start working on projects with my friend to build my resume i'm kinda excited because im a little young and i'm finally eligible for linkedIn
Recently while looking for jobs, i found some job descriptions asking for really "Python enthusiasts", how would you guys define a Python enthusiast? 🤨
thanks man!
ya boss is extremely impressed but he said don’t burn urself out man
That's an interesting question. Generally, I'd say someone who participates in the Python ecosystem (ie: OSS projects, or PyCon or something like that) is certainly an enthusiast. But, you can be an enthusiast without any of that activity
Generally, maybe i'd say someone who is interested in the language evolution & peps, or how the ecosystem is evolving, or is deeply curious about some aspects of the language or major use cases could be an enthusiast.
But, it's like trying to define who a 'music enthusiast' is.... it's too arbitrary
I think being a member of a Python-oriented Discord server is at least entry level enthusiasm.
I'd be surprised if they ask in an interview for evidence of enthusiasm, but if they do, that would be the time to ask clarifying questions.
"how enthusiastic are you?" "four." "four what?" "enthusiasm units."
hah. turn the ambiguity around on them
could i get yalls opinion on smth? i recently left an internship of over 2 years (cant say much, under an nda), and this summer i made a project for them that i really enjoyed. i want to make a open source project that is similar to the one i made at the company, using the knowledge i gained at the company. i had one of my friends from there ask my ex-boss if that would be fine legally speaking, and he said hes not entirely sure but he would probably lean towards it not being allowed. currently my public github looks pretty bad, with most of my repos being private, and this project would help a lot. do yall have any ideas or advice on what i can do to make it more separate? i wasnt planning to reuse any code of course, but i would probably end up using the same libraries for certain things, and i would rely on the knowledge i gained working on that project
if the answer ends up being that i cant do anything like it now, could i do it after a certain amount of time has past? and if so, how long would yall recommend i wait?
(for reference, im currently starting my first year of college, so im not too knowledgeable about this stuff)
"i had one of my friends from there ask my ex-boss if that would be fine legally speaking" : Yah, don't do that.
First, they're not a lawyer. Their opinion means nothing. I know a high level executive who was told "go ahead" by an EVP (executive vice president) and then got sued anyway.
Secondly, if company wants to shut you down, they can. They can just send you a nasty letter and what are you going to do about it?
Third: Avoid conflict, especially with lawyers. If you worked on XYZ for some company, it's a bad idea to go do something "like-XYZ" for yourself. It's different if you're doing it for some other company that pays lawyers, but you don't want to have to pay lawyers.
As someone who has paid lawyers, there's much better ways to spend your $$.
Alright, sounds like i should avoid that idea, thank you
Also: smart of you to think and ask this question. A lot of people don't .
thanks, wanted to make sure before i did anything
I should add - yah, other countries are far less litigious than the US. Some european countries have far better systems, imo.
are non compete clauses even enforceable? maybe depends on your jurisdiction
I wouldn't go that far... the first problem is having to pay lawyers.
This was an NDA question, not non-compete
oh sorry i meant to reply to this message
(altho NDAs are, in many peoples hands, a form of non-compete)
In some US jurisdictions, they aren't. California, for instance.
can an NDA include information you learn on the job, even if that information may exist in a textbook? Like if you work on military rockets, and you learn some rocket science as a result
This is where the difference between "technically" and "lawyering" comes in.
geez what a pain
See, a lawyer can't answer these questions. Because - lawyers can tell you who has the "better argument", but not who is going to prevail.
yeah and then you go into a war of attrition with a billion dollar company
For example, I hire you to build Spacely Sprocket 2.0. You learn a lot about sprockets, and even get to meet the CEO: Mr Spacely. You then leave and start a company to build a better sprocket, and call it a Cogswell Cog.
Even though you think you designed it from scratch, I accuse you of taking my designs and ideas, since how could someone fully invent a Cog without taking proprietary knowledge about my Sprocket?
oh they wouldn't anyway. They'd send a demand letter, most likely.
I've worked with mostly VC backed startups, and they behave very similarly to big companies in these areas.
And there's always a risk of being winklevoss'd.
hello Guys iam new in python
hello
hey
Anyone into freelancing? Kindly dm me if yes
it's easier for everyone (including you) if you just ask your question in this channel.
I wanted help in some insights for starting with freelancing..
I have working experience for about 7 yrs
I would love to work in an existing project if possible..
you can definitely get advice here for how to get into freelancing, though you can't ask for jobs/projects directly.
Great.. i mean i can work in an existing project you working for no wage... For experience
you can't ask for that here, either. but again, you can get advice.
Yes got it.. thanks for the advice
yo, yall think a computer science degree is worth getting into now or is the job market way too saturated
By the time you'd get the degree if you started now, so in like 3 to 4 years, the market would likely look different
what are the odds its worse lol
or like what if i study to work with ai or is that also saturated... guess what im asking is is the market as bad as people say it is
right now, yes, the market is bad
are there niches in the field that are in demand
all of them
Hello, guys, I'm an intermediate Python developer
right? totally what i thought!
yeah, totally agree.
But i guess, you know, pointing out the "right books"?
PEP's as @fringe sphinx referred.
And then, you would have, idk high level enthusiasts? High rank poster on stackoverflow? maybe some pycon's/competitions, idk.
But to the extend that this is being asked for, says a lot about the market, i'd say.
I was curious about python publications or something.
Because, aside from books, i actually don't follow any in particular.
Is there some references like good blogs or magazines that you guys follow?
Or even if there's some sort of references here in the community, if anyone could point that out for me, i'd be thankful 🙂
Hello guys. I'm new In the programming world. I want to achieve ML IA engeneer, that's what I'm thinking about. My question is. Where do I start? There's a lot of resources our there but I can't decide which one is the optimal for an person with 0 knowledge. Should I start first with the programming fundamentals or straight to python?
I'd suggest you go for Harvard's CS50P, its an introduction to Python with enough programming fundamentals. Its online and free.
Like self-claimed AI enthusiasts?
Can I ask something about this course
Okay sure
Do i have to watch the videos cause I only see the notes in the course
Yeah there are videos as well
Infact it'd be best if you watch them. They are very helpful
Aren't all enthusiasts "self claimed"? Kinda weird to need others to validate ones enthusiasm
I see the notes cause in the video im getting distracted
So the job seekers @cedar wedge got into are looking for self claimed guys? XD
Thxx buddy
What so you mean?
It's just a random term HR put in there because they didn't know what to write for the job description
Hey i got a question can i ask here about how to handle with self defining contracts (meaning you can choose your own benefits?)
GPT?
Guys
Guy
Sadly not, he was a senior manager.
I asked for feedback in one of my coding challenges and I mean... sure, I can understand I could have done better, but it was also a junior position so...
@serene meteor I'm not really sure what people are facing, but everyone says that the market is saturated, so my guess, is: if you are able to have THE BEST, i would guess the senior manager is looking for someone that lives and breathes python, even at a junior position, that can only translate - since i was not picked - that he has very good enthusiasts.
I would probably cringe into non existence if some senior manager looking guy told me he wants a junior that lives and breathes python
Definitely some grass touching needed on their end
what do i know... i'm just a junior lol.
As i said, I csn only imagine my competition. If he can demand that...
I can imagine the ChatGPT convo that senior manager had
Give me a millennial (NOt a zoomer one!) job description that makes us look good
does anyone know about any robotics company /work there I need some advice
I mean, im a junior too but dang
Some people are incredibly out of touch
Same story. I have been trying to change my career towards IT since the last three years (so i consider myself junior in this field) and never have been selected by any 😭
well, there are some success stories out there 🙂 so, just keep putting the work 🙂
Some success stories, more failure stories xD
Honestly, to me was quite a wake up call. I thought i was coding good.... probably i'm just coding "good enough". And the market is already offering very good coders (probably). It just means that I have to level up my game x)
Like me :3
I wouldn't take that rejection too seriously. Even if the manager was being straight with you about why you were rejected, and even if that hiring strategy is successful at picking the most technically excellent candidates, that doesn't mean you wouldn't have been a good candidate for the job, and some other hiring manager with just as good a hiring strategy (with slightly different parameters) wouldn't have picked you.
Sometimes it just comes down to a vibe check, or minutiae. "We've got 2 openings and three candidates, what do we do?"
If you asked specifically for feedback on the coding challenge, it's likely you got feedback for "how you could have done better on the coding challenge" but that also doesn't mean that doing better on the coding challenge would necessarily have landed you the job
try to avoid assuming what's going on behind the scenes. focus on what you can improve and let the rest go. You can't improve the market or change how any particular hiring manager thinks. But you can improve your performance in behavioral interviews, you can polish your resume, you can work on your skills and do more projects
Hi, guys sorry to interrupt. I had a question, is there some channel where begineers can get some resources or e-books or something ??
I'm new here and kinda lost too
Yes, in #python-discussion
!res There's a server curated list of resources, here. You can ask general questions in #python-discussion (this channel is for career advice and discussion)
The Resources page on our website contains a list of hand-selected learning resources that we regularly recommend to both beginners and experts.
aight sure thanks
okay so we can discuss career here ?
sure, a lot of the discussions here have to do with job hunting strategies, resume review, and what to study / where to go to university
that kind of thing
oh okay, i definetly need to pay attention to this channel then, well acc to you what would be one of the best career in tech rn ? like overall
Youre in the python server so, software development, of course
ohh, yk i'm literally confused as to what i should do well ofc i wanna do something IT related but I ain't sure of the genre . I did a lil bit C++ for 2 years in school, C for my first semester and then i have Java in my second semester, i just started python cuz it just feels a lil easier than other lanuages. So what are your thoughts on it and how should i prepare myself
You keep your grades up, get an internship or two, some projects, some leetcode and then you apply to jobs when youre almost done with your degree
well also i am kinda new to this coding thing so can you guide me with what is the importance and function of leetcode, github, repo something ig and other major things ??
Leetcode is so you can pass the technical interview
Projects are for you to show you can build things beyond simple functions
That is all for now, just focus on your degree, isnt this your first year?
yeah first year, first semester
What is github for ?
Hosting source code, probably for your projects
oh okay
Exactly what i'm doing, that's why i asked for some references (besides books).
I think that's what i can improve right now 🙂
?
That sounds like a question for contract lawyers
What do you mean anyway? Never heard of a 'self defining contract', seems like the wrong phrase
i mean like that i can kinda self choose what i want to recieve as reward and bonus if that makes more sense, its someone that i know that is taking over a company and is asking me to do certain tasks and since they arent tech orientated they told me to choose my own rewards but i dont know how to (like asking to much or to little) cause i want to gain something from it but just not to little for the amount of work if that makes more sense
Hello .
I'm trying to start a career in python .
But dk where to start , any tips and suggestions.
(SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT)
Getting a degree in computer science is the path of least resistance
Already .... had done internship with c# , but trying to shift to pytho
If you've already finished your degree, just do a project or two in Python. You don't need to know the language in depth at a junior level
Yeah i agree with Guitar. Just go start applying
Thankss
Oh, more like deciding what's important. Ok. What decision / choices do you have?
i can ask for a deposit or a percentage (tis will be calculated a grosly impactact on the bussiness) and i can also ask for maintenance fee per month (this can depend on hardware or software if i need to subscribe to stuff)
'Impact on business' is a difficult measure
yeah i find it aswell
i mean the thing i have to do is make a webpage with said features that the client wants (normal) make it that it host locally in the company and program the tv screens in the company to display certain menus and make an interface to easy edit it
those are the main tasks the company wants me to do but i still find it hard to know what i should ask for in return
also main task have a certain deadline while the additional features are more freely and just QoL for the company
im just lost on what to do genuinly cause atm im working in retail and signing a contract with retail is different than signing a contract to do an active coding job for a company
Guys
what is equity? is that the thingy i said about the percentage?
It can be. Usually equity is established more formally, as owning 'shares' in a company.
A percentage of profits or something else is very loose
And easy to be cut as soon as they're successful
true the person that wants to assign me to it doesnt mind giving me a small percentage of shares and they mostly want to give me this task to give me an oppertunity to learn from it and such
Sounds fun, especially if it's a learning opportunity
yeah that is why im also not sure if i should ask for much since im alr able to learn from it so much
Your time is worth something. Engineers always learn, but they pay us because we are useful
(Whether or not we learn)
true
Please am unemployed, and also a full stack dev any help please
Hi
I have chosen cs specialization in ai ml engineering can you guys tell me what to do and how to start to crack a job pls share a roadmap
Start with learning to program. #python-discussion message
hi
do yous think a github with 1 or 2 really novel and useful projects are better than 10 basic learning projects
or maybe what i should say is, i dont put projects up onto github unless I am satisfied enough about it to show it off
No one is going to look at ten GitHub projects. You can still have them all on GitHub, but be selective about which ones you pin.
Yeah pretty much, I would pin the most interesting ones to your profile, everything else probably won't be looked at from a interview pov if they even do look at github
its more about the projects on your resume than your github
cant really show off NDA stuff can I?
i guess if its nda stuff at a company you wouldnt put it as a project but as work experience and speak in broad terms, depends on the nda i guess ive never had one
i was advised by a career advisor to explain it more in terms of impact/expected impact to users
But again you'd be doing that in a resume and not on GitHub (the NDA i mean)
yea, in my resume
I genuinely hate this kind of advice. I discount 'impact' statements when reviewing resumes. This is just my opinion, but I want to know what -you did-, what you were responsible for, what stack you worked with.
The very first thing I try to gauge is: how 'technical' is this person? Are they capable of contributing without much hand holding? Etc
you bring up a really interesting point. as you might have noticed by now, I have already reached a certain level of debugging/googling whereby I am able to get problems fixed independently (even if I am a little slower than other people), how might I be able to show that off?
hello
I'm a new (:
...that would be literally all of them...
How is the Cython ?
i suppose keywords yea. i wrote a script to bold literally all of the skills listed in the job description before it compiles the pdf
NEEDING SOME. HELP ON PYTHON PROBLEMS , WILLING TO PAY MONEY DM ME
Why cant people read the description of this channel or even its name
if they could read they would be able to solve the problem themselves wouldnt they
i cant
We know you cant, go ask elsewhere
holy shit
surely it's a parody right????????
ah i remember why i didnt put AWS in my resume
it can't differentiate between Annual Wage Supplement and Amazon AWS in the job description
i probably would add it in the future but it's just really troublesome to code something to differentiate these 2 abbreviations so i've just gone with S3 API, etc.
I really hope this is a parody but its not the vibe im getting
oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no
Truly living up to the headless name
i am, in fact, coding these directly
it's probably not that hard just by correlating with keywords such as GCP, or Cloud Engineer
some AI thing designed to help you pass ATSes that was recommended to me couldnt recognize a plain pdf file with a single line: Name: <My name>
idk... i would rather not do an API call every single time it parses a job description
mine parses like 200 JDs and compile resumes for them in like 8 seconds
also deciding if my skills are compatible
...or yknow
...regex
Any one here working in mathco or recently completed a hiring rounds held by mathco.
imo a bit of both is optimal, you dont know who will read your resume and some of them are looking for "increased <x> by 120%"
IMO, the first bullet of a job description or project should start with the stack; nice technical keywords
The first bullet of the first job is the most important one. Lead with tech: if I'm hiring a SWE, I want to know you're a coder
Somewhere in the bullets, esp for juniors, mention infrastructure, GitHub, testing, CI, etc.
To me, the first bullet of first job is the most important part of the resume. It's the thing I'm going to read first to figure out "who are you"
🙂↕️
how often do software devs come across libraries or software that's new to them, and is it normal?
yes
Daily? Esp if you hang out on Pydis
Hi
Hello What carres I can start with just knowing Python?
careers? none.
there isn't a market for python skills that you can obtain on your own in a few months.
What about jobs
look up Business Intelligence Engineer positions, you may need to supplement some skills but python should be a large majority of the requirement
🤞 sounds like I’m going to get an offer soon. Hopefully it’s a good one. Company seems good and people I have met seem good. And having a job again sounds good
what motivated you to post this screenshot in this channel in particular? I want to hear your specific thought process, I don't need an apology, this is a, uhh, scientific study and I need answers
@vale bone your message was removed for asking for work, which is not allowed
what is a roadmap to work and train model for people
like freelance for them and also build pipelines
from where should i start?
A masters degree in CS with AI focused coursework
my major is business
but yeah i wanna purse AI as a side thing
I don't know very much about the freelancing landscape for AI, but in general, it's much more challenging to make it as a freelancer than getting a regular job
AI isn't really a side thing. Staying up to date with AI is practically a full time job.
exactly but idk where to start from
i did start with python, and now working with data structures
like what roadmap to follow
Can you change your major?
i actually can't unfortunately 😢
Quick question
Just finished my interview with a company and I see they have another role which ties closely with my role.
Do you think I should apply ?
Yes of course
Just in general, the answer to "should i apply" is probably always going to be yes
I need a tiny help
which help do you need/ @buoyant cargo
hello guys i need just some help
Hey, i don't need it anymore just found the problem thanks though.
hey gang i’m going into doing a T-level in digital support security. can anyone tell me if it’s a good idea? i would like to go into cyber security
So ive noticed my relatives which were in the software field transitioning to business after the age of 45-50 or so
And this is consistent with all my relatives who were software engineers. I interpreted that software engineers have a low shelf life
I wanted a general opinion if someone can give
I know multiple people in the 45+ age range who are still in very technical roles. But some people do transition to different roles through their career. Both career paths are viable
your correct and not at the same time - software engineers often move away from it at about 50 to start business or something in that realm - this is not because software engineers have a low shelf life - but sometimes it becomes too difficult to have “mastered” a coding language and to stay ontop of that
From what ive been told by them, their companies often slowly cut them off
of course it’s still doable
so basically staying up to date?
usually means their skills are outdated - and they are not consistently staying up to date with the newer ways to do things - often with efficiency. when you’ve got a family or other commitments - you can’t mindlessly scroll on the python server to see new ways to do things
that’s why you get new people in who are willing to do a massive project - and have nothing else to do, they can also stay with the company for a longer time
Hmm i see. Thank you. Ill keep that in mind
of course, take what i said with a pinch of sugar - you can stilll be a software developer until your like 80 as long as your willing to put the same amount of work in
Was told by my parents to decide some 2nd option besides cse and when talking to my relatives in this field, I realized this
So seeing from the company's pov, won't you prefer to lay off an old employee to hire a younger one? Won't efficiency of the older one be way less than the younger one
age doesn’t always mean loss of efficiency
if your staying up to date then your going to be worth more then that younger one - from seniority and skill in that field
BUT companies also have to take into account how long you can work for - because if you’ve got a massive 5 year project and your nearing 60, you’ll want to retire before your done with the project
Didn't really think from that angle. Thank you for ya help
its also illegal to discriminate based on age, for whatever thats worth
they do it anyways - they just say they’re looking for someone with less seniority
you need answer? its a linux terminal command, for some ppls like you to learn the most basic command
the question was "why in this channel?"
it wasnt the question
that's what Matiiss asked
what motivated you to post this screenshot in this channel in particular?
to teach ppls just a basic command of linux
