and just having fun with it, ie functional programming...
Yep. That is a great thing to do!
I think what is being said here is that the company folks don’t know any of that so you better find a way to “demonstrate “ that you already know DSA and other useful stufd
working with different frameworks, and building side projects (I'm working on my first big one!)
I am excited to take Python this semester too
hey guys I'm going to be doing a m.i.t data science machine learning bootcamp. do you guys think I could quite possibly get hired after finishing?
they said I'll have hirable skills
hey guys is it a good idea to use a type-b virtual machine to check apps for malware?
#cybersecurity is a better place to ask
What I asking is it worthing delaying my associates degree by a couple of months?
because I'm super excited about it. More so than I am getting my ME degree
you won't get a job in ML from doing an ML bootcamp, so don't delay doing your associates.
even if I'm excited about it?
are you excited enough that you're willing to pay for it even if future employers don't care?
kind of yea. I really love the idea of learning machine learning so I can make programs that can play games and object detection but I can learn that on my own can't I?
the bootcamps says they'll give me a profilio that will make me hirable. but I knew that was probably bogus
right. you should only pay for education that you either can't get on your own, or if it imparts a credential.
it's bogus.
yea I figured as much I don;t need to pay 2500 anyway I'll just continue to work on my mechanical engineering degree and do ml/reinforcement learning on the side
I imagine its still important as a mechanical engineer to learn electronics/rasberry pi yes?
Thats what this youtuber said was important to learn/might make me look good on a resume.
I'm almost finished my electronics kit anyway, I've been really spreading myself thin lately
I don't know anything about mechanical engineering. but I'd be careful about listening to youtubers.
Ah alright have you ever worked for google?
no, but working for google isn't the be-all-end-all of ones career.
one of my friends works for google, and he complains about his perception of his coworkers' competence all the time.
From the engineers' conversations I've read, it would be useful
Having a main specialty (mechanical, for example) + something else you're good at (electronic or embedded or something else) would probably allow you access to more jobs
But I'm not an engineer myself, so take this with a grain of salt. I'm sure there are engineer communities where people with more experience can help you
yea Im in some of them I will ask
they are telling me to be more focused
Well, if they are engineers, they would certainly know better than I do

I am fucking pissed. Applied to 5 different engineering apprenticeships, got rejected from one after an interview and the other 4 didnt offer me an interview. Fuck this shit man. Ive got one last apprenticeship opportunity and if that goes down the drain, got to go back to uni but I cant afford it
What cant you afford? The "expense" of uni is accommodation and you dont really need to move into the dorms
Student loans cover your tuition fees and you dont have to start paying them until youre employed and earning around 30k iirc
And even then the student loan payments are basically just another tax, they scale with your income, theyre taken automatically, they dont affect your credit score
(and chances are you'll eventually get the loan written off 27 years down the line)
Ive already done a foundation year and first year so I have to pay for another foundation and first year. However, due to the shit job market in the UK, Ive not been able to get a job to get the money for at least the first instalment. SFE has not gotten back to me about the maintenance loan so need to contact them again. My parents are willing to pay but Im not having that especially, if we get into financial trouble I dont want my uni fees to be the cause of that
Probably better a levels is what they have, how did you do in them?
Also im pretty sure student loans cover your degree +2 extra years if you happen to retake a year or move to a different course or uni
(i know cause i did this)
I did biomed before but now im switching disciplines. The course im doing is AI and Robotics
All the apprenticeships I applied only required GCSE grades. i essentially got 10 A*-As
A levels I did shit due to stress (BDD, Maths Bio Chem
Well thats probably the reason others are picked over you, the a levels
An apprenticeship might only mention GCSEs but it doesnt mean they only look at applicants with them
Its kinda late for uni now unless you go through clearing, could you apply to a college and do a couple alevel retakes?
Ive already got a place. I just dont want to go due to the cost and Im getting tired of uni and having not go anywhere
Thats the issue. Idk how much SF im going to get. Its been over 2 montsh and radio silence from SFE. Need to ask them whats going on
You could retake the a levels to get the grades up and keep applying to apprenticeships?
Not doing that. Its just going back again. Thought of redoing but not worth the stress again. Im 23 and barely done fuck all. At this point i want to smash someones face. Frustrated with all of this
how could i laid a qa or help desk job could someone help me with my resume?
You need to take the risk a risk, trying to play this safe will not do you any favours. First apply to about 60 more apprenticeships. 5 applications was good in 2000. It is just a numbers gametgese days. And keep working on projects whatever they are. It is almost impossible to get into junior SWE without a CS degree in the UK right now, but it does happen. For a real story: we (my place) hired reasonably recently a bloke whose full education was in Theology - a PhD 🙂 . We are his first job, at 27, as an SWE. He is great, his projects is what mattered. That said he is now doing CS part time (and paying himself the fees) just for the BSc paper. I'm proud of the bloke's route. It is possible. Don't give up taking risks and trying.
Hi Everyone,
I am Zainul from india. I'm new to the community, but loved the way you all help each other here.
I need a small help,
can you please review my resume for the role of ML Engineer or Data scientist or AI Engineer.
I am not able crack any interview with it. can you please help me with it.
I assure you, I applied to many apprenticeships throughout this year and got rejected from every single one of them. Im only going back to uni at the behest of my parents or I risk getting kicked out (as I had dropped out of Uni). For me to apply to more apprenticeships, I have to live a lie for year to do so. I am getting tired of this shit. Idk what the fuck Im doing wrong, idk what qualities I have that makes me unappealing. I fucking studied for years to be the best for it to land me nowhere and other bastards less than me succeed beyond me. Apologies for the rant
What you did wrong (imho anyway) was not doing a levels and going into a foundation year in uni
You should have done the alevels, they matter way more than gcses and if you happen to drop out of uni like you did youre not left hanging, foundation years are a higher education industry cash grab
And also, why drop out? You could have gone to another uni and degree path through clearing
Its a feelsbad moment for sure but you cant blame other people for this and you shouldnt be mad at better candidates
I believe they did say they did A Levels - #career-advice message
Bad alevels means no alevels
I see
Unfortunately, when it comes to apprenticeships, they are competing with people that have A*/A a levels, its not really uncommon for students to have these grades
any feedback please
I cant go back to A levels. The stress of doing my A levels is what got me at this point in my life. Better doing a fnd year than to redo a whole 2 years of stress. Plus I dropped out because I got sick of everything. To study so hard for all my life and for it to amount to fucking nothing. Do any of you have been at that point to see all your fucking aspirations and dreams turn to shit? To have parents and family who know fuck all about anything and rely on you to be the success. All the potential I posses and to have nothing to show for it. The only thing Ive been doing now is to keep trying and looking for other opportunities. And I know the fault lies within me as Ive always said to myself for almost every single day for the past 5-6 years
Bro youre 23, you didnt "study hard for all your life"
Go back to school and stop acting like your life is over
People much older than you and in much worse situations go back to studying for a levels and degrees
One of my classmates is like, 65. Not even joking.
I had grown people with families and kids of their own to support in both my degrees, a 20something going back to school is not a problem whatsoever
one of my professors is 27
University has people of all ages - and the age range can be wild.
You'll have people that are seventeen, ninteen, twenty-eight and forty in your group sometimes
And ultimately, yeah, you're extremely young - by literally any standard. You're young by adult standards, by university standards, by workplace standards, for life in general.
I know that it's very easy to feel that "it's over" because you failed to attain something you perceive to as a necessity at your age, but I assure you that it's not the end of the world.
The amount of times I've felt I've ruined my life and opportunities because I didn't do it younger, earlier, or more diligently are so many that I've lost count - but ultimately, I'm doing ok.
Unless you're literally in your death bed, it's never too late.
So, take your time, gather yourself and allow yourself to feel what you have to feel, plan your steps, and then move ahead.
The funny part is they wont even qualify as a mature student if they go back to uni now
Dont be mistaken that Im some naive twat. All of what you have said, Ive already known. I know its not over and im young, I know theres other opportunities and theres people in worse situations than me. Im constantly trying to find a path forward but every time i take a step forward, im pushed 5 steps back. For every time I despair about the past, Im thinking what to do next. Its just frustrating with the constant rejections and basically, fuck all support at home
This is #career-advice and that looks like malware
does anybody know much about the microsoft power platform? i got a junior power platform tester interview and could do with some advice
Hello, your message has been removed for being both malicious and off topic
This is a programming server. There aren't really that many people here that work with "low code" solutions, especially not the really expensive ones, because we're writing the code ourselves.
Here's an invite to a server focused on Microsoft products like the Power Platform: https://discord.gg/winadmins
legend, thanks
My internship asks for me to be experienced in five programming languages. I know all of them. Should i put a project down for all of them or just one?
Is it possible to find a normal job in IT without obtaining a higher education in Europe? Many of my friends say that it is very difficult but realistic. What is your opinion on this topic? Now I'm just thinking about what I should do, does it make sense to complete a higher education, or is it better to just take some quality courses and go to work
Anything is possible I met someone just yesterday with a job with 76ers with no degree related to m.i.t. try building some projects to showcase your proficiency with computers
What is a "normal job in IT"? Help desk, operations?
I am not based in Europe. I know some people there do get IT jobs without degrees, but the level and pay is likely to be lower than you would get with a degree.
thanks for the answer
I just now faced the question of whether to go to university or take high-quality courses and go to work,I just wanted to hear thoughts on this situation
what type of programming projects/languages should I put on my resume for this job. will all my projects do or is any good?
There is quite a positive community here,
I simply already asked this question to other people and everyone reacted negatively and began to aggress
Do u have a high education?
no only a near associates degree
Did u took some courses?
in programming yea
And what programming language?
c++
Where are u from?
germany
There are a lot of free corses on YouTube, but form it was very hard to learn programming language from YouTube
What do u want to study?
python
In which field do you want to work?
Do u know somthing in python or do u want to start learning
i now parts of JS
Information technology
For me the best hepler was ChatGPT,GitHub and some sites where u can find information
thanks
You can read a book that calls a Byte of Python
It's very good book, that will help u to understand all the basics in Python
C++ is used there?
I do not recommend using chatgpt to learn programming.
they want someone who is adept with computers
it can give you false and misleading information that sounds right but is very hard to flush out of your brain
and it is very easy to use gpt to skip the part where you actually learn how to do things
Yeah, maybe for the beggining it's not a good idea, but when u understand,it's very heplfull thing
what company?
when i reach the point when i am not a begginer any more?
youth build is a mentorship company for underprivileged kids
Hola
does anyone here take ADHD medicine regularly? if so are you willing to expound on how its been working out? How do you take or when? Has it helped in your career or at work ?
You mean will I still be affective if I take it
You will feel it yourself, you will be able to write tg bots, neurons
that's an impossible question for us to answer unfortunately. I took adhd medicine and it did nothing for me unfortunately. It might do wonders for you, this is literally a question to ask a doctor not really programmers.
Is that the case how many
Mg and how many times per days did it help get projects done
Ok sure
your censoring is not very good
I'm not going to share that because it won't help you. Everyone's body is different, me telling you would provide zero benefit. I know people literally can't take the medicine because it damages their heart
Little bit anxious sorry
i know many that have had good experiences, but it's difficult to know how any one medication would help any one specific person
Adderal
What is a high quality course anyway?
This is a course taught by specialists in their field, who then guarantee you employment
Uh huh
I said something wrong?Or what do u think about that?
Nothing wrong, I was just pondering
What country are you in?
Regardless: a degree is the starting point for SWE jobs.
I'm from Ukraine but because of the war i will move to Slovakia
Promises of employment are sus, at best.
why?
There's many reasons. This job market is an employers market; there's sufficient degree holders to fill the roles. Theres a long history of bootcamps and cert courses promising jobs and not delivering, search Reddit for stories about them
In Ukraine there are a lot of courses that guarantees employment
I don't know Ukraines market, I'm speaking from a US perspective
My advice would be to talk to someone who took the course, and learn from them.
And i dont think that they would вeceive peoples
Strong technical experiences as demonstrated through technical projects, research or engineering internships <----------- what does this mean exactly? Why not be more specific?
When money is involved, deceit steps in.
Thank u for advice
Maybe u are right
Does htis mean I can put anything on there @ripe ermine
they want to know that you can do the job. the evidence is technical projects, research, or engineering internships
I'm not trying to discourage you, only tell you to be careful and ask a lot of questions.
Like just projects I've worked on or something specific?
Yeah,that's good advise,thank u x2
I have some coding projects which I find quite interesting but I'm not sure if they count sounds like they do
yes, projects you've worked on
could someone look at my resume and give me tips?
Can you explain what is happening because I don't understand a bit. They've already answered u?
Start with a good resume template, the spacing and formatting here is not right.
Google 'Jake's resume' for an example of a good template
like this?
There's a number of typos here, and between the template and typos this resume would never get looked at. Fix that first.
Yup, that's one. I prefer https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/jakes-resume/syzfjbzwjncs
Does anyone have any idea why the column before the number column is called gutter?
This is the careers channel. See #❓|how-to-get-help
Sorry.
do u guys think doing simple ecommerce site will get me to interview calls? or do i need something extraordinary for getting interview calls?
Does leetcode help build up profile for the future, if I go to interviews and stuff?
Is it recommended I start with it?
Leetcode at best will help you practice interview-style questions. It won't inherently increase your chances of getting an interview
Just a simple ecommerce site? Maybe not. Sometimes it's more about how you present a project on your resume though
interesting
Leetcode is like a finisher, not a starter. After you've learned the field.
but thee commerce sites have everything a web dev will be coding his whole life
Are you building it from scratch?
yeah. i will have two factor auth and payment and almost everythong a real thing have
ok, i mean maybe it's not just "a simple ecommerce site" then 😄
i like starting from scartch. like i plan to use flask or fastapi. django doesn feel right for this.
true
Hello.
Is there anyone who needs help with anything?
If you need any help with anything, please send me a DM.
I'll be happy to help.
Thank you.
hey you still here, I need help but please don't do this for future reference
I see
looks like a template
with the entries from the template
I know that
But I'm saying imagine this was my profilio does it look neatly formatted? @true harness
yeah. the template is fine
alright let me delete it and get to work
Is adding a bunch of things to make a project seem more complicated a good idea?
why not make it actually complex and interesting instead of seeming complicated
Ok
whats an interesting coding project that would impress you?
idk
Half the struggle with interesting projects is thinking them up
thinking them up is easy. i can give like 10 off the top of my head. but being sufficiently motivated to work on them is difficult
cane you give me 3?
also let it be known that I hate jupyter notebook and hope it never leaves purgatory
what do you mean by fields?
I have never used leetcode before, from what I have heard its simple problems on algorithms and similar stuff.
so it's a practice for interviews rather than directly helping
@fringe sphinx ei bro how much codewars is enough tho?
tool that measures lock contention in rust. packaging/installer agnostic github action that prints the sql generated by an alembic revision. database like sqlite that uses Bw trees
Do it
Balance. Read, projects, practice, etc
how about in python?
2 of those could be python
i will still get heart attack if something out of blue is asked in interview
That will happen every interview.
7 more: backend for notion that syncs to a real relational database; a shell with python as a scripting language (like xonsh but more like powershell with passing real objects around); http 1.1 server; desktop graphic thing that does the sound bar thing that goes up and down with the sound; a blog site; a terminal emulator; a library for concurrency primitives that takes advantage of the subinterpreters thing
a blog site? thats been done before.
I know its unorthodox but I'm going to finish a tutorial and put it on my resume. Because there's still a massive amount of troubleshooting I have to do to even get it to work
when you are a beginner, everything has been done before. for projects, it's mostly the learning that matters. try putting your own spin on things
hi guys
What would be good features to add to a blog site to impress employers?
idk
I guess it would depend on the specific skills you want to demonstrate, like if I'm applying to jobs that want someone good at SQL, I need to make sure there are some features that require you to work with databases and I understand them well
Something like that
yes. it's about demonstrated skills
Indeed
guys Mtech Cse or Mtech AI and ML which should I choose
I'm studyin AI and DS and I'm in my 3rd year btw
What? What do you mean?
quality content
which has better scope in future?
I would choose ML because that's my favorite. They're all good to be honest. Less familiar with the first one
For software engineers:
Any quality pet projects related to software engineering. Literally unlimited in my opinion.
But... Yeah, at least some stuff used from your job role is preferable. Some correlation but does not have to be 100% common stack at all
Articles can also show your level of deep thinking. And also they just contribute to society by sharing information 😁
Best to go which one you find yourself the most skilled or enjoy the most.
ahh aight
okay mate
Bear in mind I am not a hired software engineer but I am aware that a.i is growing exceedingly fast.
real
Thank you thank you
Awesome
Hi, this is my resume so far, I feel like I might need to be more specific in my projects section but lmk how and/or what else I should improve. I’m gonna apply to data analyst/scientist jobs rn, ty
And on top I have my name, city, phone number, GitHub, and email.
don't think you should place HTML and CSS as programming
Nah, that's definitely fine there
I suppose @wispy lichen meant OSINT not ONIST though 😁
hey could anyone pls help me get a qa or help desk job
What help do you need?
Prepare resume and apply for jobs. Get resume feedback.
So I'm thinking about going back to school this upcoming January for computer science
do we talk about college teachers here
(Probably gonna actually start in October but that will just be one of my general education classes). I was thinking about investing in a laptop for college as well as programming in general (I already have a desktop but I need something portable). Is there any resources on deciding what laptop would make a good investment in this feild.
Like are there any particular qualities that you should look for in a laptop you want to use for computer science related work or classes.
If this isn't the right place to ask this I will movie it, but having looked through at a cursory glance through the channels, seeing as this is a career plan investment this seemed like the right choice.
This is a very common question. You may find some thoughts written online about it. My take is that there aren't really any special considerations to be had.
my warm suggestions would be to get a laptop with enough RAM (16GB is like the absolute minimum, I'd recommend at least 32GB and 64GB would be good) and probably a good battery, probably what matters most since if you have a desktop and a decent enough laptop, you can just connect remotely to your desktop from the laptop
anyone who can review my resume
honestly 16GB is plenty imo
I've been on it for a long time, with no issues being related to OOM
I guess if you were to go into something like ML, it would be beneficial to have more - but in general I (personally) don't see the necessity for needing so much
it is very much not, I have 16GB, it is so much not enough, my pagefile (used to be like 30GB) is like 10GB (cuz I limited it)
and it would be super annoying to have to close stuff I have open just to have a smoother experience
I really need everything open at once and having a slowish CPU does't help either, so, yeah, 32GB is where my current minimum is at (for like a future machine, but I'd probably need them 64GB)
for a school laptop, 16 is really the minimum imo
What's your daily usage look like?
just post it here and people will look at it. anonymized if you prefer
You definitely do not need 64 tho lol
2 PyCharm projects (one of them is a sandbox pretty much, the other one is variable, but it's usually some project I sort of work on at that time), discord, several tabs over a couple windows open in the browser, spotify, sometimes vscode (+ github desktop)
- I want to be able to open anything at any moment without issue
for instance, idk, use OBS or open some video editing software, play games, without having to close a bunch of stuff
Electron apps gooo brrr
yes, I do (don't question it)
yeah now that's an organisation issue kek
damn
i think, for the average CS student, even 32 is plenty
From my own experience, I've managed fine with 16 but if you are gonna have a ton of apps open in the background then sure it helps
Me every day
My word tho, how do you even begin to navigate around those tabs lmao
32 is just ok, as I said, 16 would be the bare minimum I'd recommend, but really anything starting from 32 would be nice, 64 would be great (never have to worry about RAM again, sort of, on a desktop I'd want 96 for starters, then probably don't have to worry for quite a while about it (but leaving two slots free for upgrades ofc))
If it works, all power to you
Yeah with all due respect I think you're a user with pretty heavy requirements compared to the average student
how can i get in contact with a admin/mod/dev here?
oh, I uhh, well, sort of kind of just remember where stuff is, but if I don't, I just... open a new tab 😁
DM @severe widget
thank you it is very important
ok thanks i’ll send my resume
Too much things, you should select relevant skills to show for a job post
You can give details about how you did a project, but first describe the goal, precise if It was successfull if you have cool numbers to tell, then eventually you give the stack
like wtf, what a mess 😄
hi
I want to earn $500-1000/month in the next 5months time. Is it reasonable time to learn to start earning this much? I'm currently learning flask and reactjs. I'm pretty much beginner.
that doesn't look reasonable. If you are a beginner, I would suggest to focus on learner rather than expecting to make money right away.
If it's about the money, then you may have more luck looking at student jobs
Any idea how much time I need to invest.
For the student jobs? Not much, it's mostly waiter or coffee shop type of jobs
I mean the learning flask part
if you are beginner from scratch, it could easily cross into the year or two mark
Dude never closes a single tab
I would like to ask how is it possible that I meet all the requirements in my resume and there is absolutely no response from the company and I see that the same company is still looking for someone for the position?
Got projects on your resume? Got a portfolio? Show your experience with technologies rather than tell.
- Yes, 2. Yes
Posted your anonymized resume here for review?
there could be tons of reasons. in general, don't worry too much about any one job application. stuff like this will happen
Quite frankly I don't think projects matter
Nope, I'm gonna think about it
Well, I think it's regular trend rather than exception
Matter for what?
If you have prior experience and education that's good too, but i think projects would always increase your hit rate
Resumes have 'first impressions'. It's possible your resume leaves a negative or neutral impression: despite having the right keywords.
For the HR
I also want to ask how it is with CV filtering programs? How strongly this process is automated?
Hard to give a precise answer. I don't know current big tech automation, but there are many 'levels' to filtering. Automation, initial screen, hiring manager screen, etc
The primary purpose of projects is to build your skills: it's hard to be 'good' without practice. Absence of projects on a new grad resume sends a signal, by itself, but the purpose of the project is not to pad a resume: it's to have substance
Well, that's an idealistic theory, in practice I had several interviews and HR knew nothing about my personal projects that were on my resume, so I think it's overrated. I may be wrong, but this is my experience
Nothing you just said contradicted what I just said.
I didn't say the project substance is important at the screening/first round stage, I said it's a signal of the entire resume / first impression.
So maybe I misunderstood something, this is not my first language
Let me phrase it differently.
At the early screening or first round interview, the project substance isn't that important... except maybe to add new keywords to your resume (ie: to show AI/ML interest).
By substance I mean: what the project actually was. In other words: no one is really looking closely at the projects.
But, a resume that had zero projects would stand out and might fail the screen/filter.
, I will sometimes look at a project at the interview and ask candidate to walk me through one. So, the project helps in the later stage of an interview, in my experience
College grads often have pretty simple projects anyway, so not expecting much... but I'm expecting something
thank this is encouraging for me also
Is it worrying that I'm 24 and still don't have my associates degree?
Do you know the percentage of college students who finish in 4 years?
If you don't, google it.
That being said if u want to change ur life u can rise up u don't have to take it (edit: why you thinking reaction me, imma be cool and not tell it like it is. )
just want to say this is an insane resume. Winning a open a.i tournament is nuts
ah makes sense college has gotten more expensive and there are life situations for every person
Okay, I get it. Thanks for depicting your perspective
Well, I don't have any formal education in CS direction, I have seen many people after graduation and I always thought it was useless and a waste of time, but now I am going to change that for several reasons, I am 26
Fair point, some people have a degree and learned little.
The history of the fizz buzz question actually illustrates this going back a decade or so: candidates who can't solve simple questions
I think the consensus advice here is: get a degree. If not, then get into a tech job as soon as possible (QA or tech support are two examples) because landing a SWE job is very hard right now without a degree (unless you can network your way into one). If you land an adjacent job, keep studying and maybe still go for the degree.
What type of coding projects should I make for a spaceex intership?
SWE?
Hah, I think something in embedded with C++ would help
or Python YOLO AI stuff
Software engineer. A programming job.
what do you mean after emebbedded?
whats a python yolo?
So I fully right with u
You only look once
I was thinking modeling rocket propulsion in unity
I found Society of Women Engineers and I thought wtf
Only real life calculations mimicing open rocket. @fair hound
My advice: breadth not depth. Aiming for one company is pointless.
(Statistically, the odds are terrible)
Its not one company persay but aerospace engineering companies
I know how difficult it is to get hired by spacex. If I did though I'd work a maximum of 4-3 years then quit
Man I love engineering used to hate my dad for pushing it on me but I love all the things I can build with it
Well, it depends what you want to do but in general I know that embedded systems in SpaceX are created in C++
Are you in school full time?
what does an embedded systems project look like
Don't ask me, I have really shallow knowledge in this topic
I have an illness that makes it difficult for me to focus so technically yea. School is really difficult for me
Hmm, I was going to suggest trying to get some sort of internship or side job in the industry, if it's possible. Something that shows your interest in the field
Thank you, it wasnt openai openai it was microsoft azures openai team so very close but idk if lol
still incredible and I'm massively jealous
yea I'm going to try and win an internship at boeing but I doubt they'll take me with my lack of experience
Thank you so much
Are you in uni too?
yea
@visual flax I've listened to interviews with Tomasz Czajka, who worked at SpaceX for years. In general, if you're thinking about it seriously, you have to prepare yourself for really hard work without weekends. If you want to work 8 hours and forget about work, this is not for you. At least it's Czajka's experience
Nah I love engineering I want it to be my life my everything
I'll marry one of the girls that works there also happily ever after
Potentially it is also a path towards easily burnout (and problems in mental and physical capacity) and just unrealistic expectations
how he treated Twitter with firing 75%+ of workers and then making bad decision one by one showed that he is not very good of a leader (or having a lot of sense in general), and most likely just a slave driver
While you are young and healthy u could work there yeah... but what if you are older and no longer able to afford working at nights and etc. Or wishing having a family or smth. This is all incompatible with it. People are just a coal to burn for owner of SpaceX/Twitter
Hypothetical question here: Would you rather marry Elon musk and get paid $10 billion, or marry a nice lady and you pay $10000? (Yes this is career related, this is interview question for my company)
I partly right but with twitter I consider one thing - how it's possible that a blog kind of website had thousand of engineers?? I mean I was listening Jon Blow and he was talking that it's a consequence of bad architecture
Thats a tough one would be easier if I was a woman
I'm going to choose elon because there's always an opportunity for divorce and I ain't so simp
you are aware that marriage from a legal perspective is just a contract that can be broken, right? assuming you'd have to split them 10B in half during divorce, you're still left with 5B (though if you split in half, then you get half of other Elon's assets, so like, either you get way more than 10B or you get those 10B instead, idk, but even with 5B, it's a yes), yes, I'm taking that any day, it's wealth for generations to come
(this isn't even a question really, like wut)
(why is this in #career-advice)
Facebook has 25-30k software engineers too. The thing with software engineering systems that they can grow infinity in complexity. It just does not have to be seen for external user 😉
In any case, even if it had bad architecture or whatever other reason, Musk showed inability to make changes in a good way. He consequently made bad decisions one by one to destroy it.
Starting with bad practices for workers, continuing with annihilating technical side.
🤔 Musk type of leadership is actually commonly described as Psychopaths/Sociopaths in Leaders stuff.
Well, fb isn't exception 😛
Facebook is an example of a startup that encouraged tactical programming.
For many years the company’s motto was “Move fast and break things.” New
engineers fresh out of college were encouraged to dive immediately into the
company’s code base; it was normal for engineers to push commits into
production in their first week on the job. On the positive side, Facebook
developed a reputation as a company that empowered its employees. Engineers
had tremendous latitude, and there were few rules and restrictions to get in their
way.
Facebook has been spectacularly successful as a company, but its code base
suffered because of the company’s tactical approach; much of the code was
unstable and hard to understand, with few comments or tests, and painful to work
with. Over time the company realized that its culture was unsustainable.
Eventually, Facebook changed its motto to “Move fast with solid infrastructure”
to encourage its engineers to invest more in good design. It remains to be seen
whether Facebook can successfully clean up the problems that accumulated over
years of tactical programming.
In fairness to Facebook, I should point out that Facebook’s code probably
isn’t much worse than average among startups. Tactical programming is
commonplace among startups; Facebook just happens to be a particularly visible
example.
Fortunately, it is also possible to succeed in Silicon Valley with a strategic
approach. Google and VMware grew up around the same time as Facebook, but
both of these companies embraced a more strategic approach.
A philosophy of Software Design, page 29
If u will "marry" Elon and just die from burnout with health or mental reasons, it will not matter how much u will get paid. Dead people have no need for money 😉
what's the best place to search for open SDE jobs?
it's too hard to track individual companies
There are many job boards around, linkedin is one for example
engineering fields where professionals are hired for specific projects and can leave once the work is completed. Civil engineering is a prime example, where civil engineers are often involved in the planning, design, and construction phases of projects like buildings, roads, bridges, or dams. Once the construction is completed, their work is done, and they move on to the next project which is contrast with ongoing responsibilities like ML engineering, software maintenance, or network engineering, where continuous monitoring and optimization are essential.
hence idk which kind of techy engineering you can leave it when the project have completes
There are many consulting and contracting jobs where you work project to project. Even in corporate jobs, IT devs might work on one project for a year, then move to another. Product devs less so
I don't think it's ideal, but there are indeed project based roles vs product
dude work has been keeping me so busy, this is so refreshing
feels nice to do something
Nice, everything stable? No more job searching??
super stable, the median tenure at the firm is 7.1 years
no more job searching like a madman
i literally only have to go into the office once a month and the office is 5 minutes away from me
im bringing this up bcuz i didn wan to promote myself for consultation then the thing beings a piece of crap
and when i accessed to my uni's data...some of the prof does consultation for techy stuff
so i kinda wonder how its possible when techy stuff require continous development and monitoring
Theres many levels to consulting. Sometimes it's advice (getting more 'senior' knowledge, outside / second opinions, etc). Sometimes prototyping. Sometimes to expand an understaffed team or bootstrap a project. Sometimes because the scope is very well known. Sometimes people underestimate the difficulty.
I'm three years into a 6 month project right now. It'll never end.
it's hard to find relevant good jobs from amongst noise.
That's why networking is so important
https://tenor.com/view/if-you-think-of-an-gif-20132469 or you could be like me and pivot
@fringe sphinx
You asked about a data analyst roadmap. The big problem is: data analyst means lots of things, depending on the company. So, it's hard to prescribe a specific answer
Look on LinkedIn and take a look at jobs with Data Analyst in the title, and start getting an idea of what people want.
i want to be able to build image detection software , and build chatbots
My answer is: build Python data skills (see Kaggle.com/learn ), build math and stats skills; study EDA in particular, ....
But that's not a data analyst, then.
Maybe you mean ML Engineer
this?
isnt that under data analysis
No.
Eda=expository data analysis
Kaggle.com/learn should be your next stop to build your data skills
Hi all!
Average pay for python software engineer?
depends on a wide range of factors including country, state, experience, etc
Average
the average still depends on country
Ireland
You could look it up you know
is it worth leaving a company within a month for an offer 50% greater than current ?
New company:
Unicorn start up
long term contractual
fully remote
previous company:
Top 10 best employer to work for
well established
hybrid but they provide commute
free food
I would, in a heartbeat
even though its a contract?
I can manage that, But very embarrassed to even think of resigning
the ethics are in the way
How long a contract
I have written an email, but should be over year, similar to full time permanent, they probably just say contractual because work is based on clients and demand, and might scale down at some point
also i will have to do my own taxes and work from my own laptop
dilemma is my middle name i guess
Oof, ok that requires second thought
If you do, then it's a good timing because you don't have to put the company you are leaving on your resume.
However note that you are most likely to burn bridges there.
And as a contractor, you already noted that you will have to take care of all the benefits yourself and should not expect mentorship/coaching or be treated the same as other employees. You also would not benefit from the same protections.
As such, it's normal for contracting position to be paid more than employees since the company is providing less. Though the difference is typically closer to 20% than 50% in the USA
Be very aware of the tax implications of being self-employed in your country. That 50% is almost certainly not really 50%. You'll need to do your own research on your tax obligations as a contractor to know what it really is.
I'd be cautious about jumping into such a role while still junior. Lack of support can make it really tough to succeed
That said, it sounds like a really interesting opportunity. I'm just very risk averse so I would be careful to understand the contract and what my obligations are and how I could be screwed over
I’m looking for some advice.
I don’t wanna sound like an asshole but I’d generally consider myself above average. I know a lot and I share a lot to reiterate my knowledge on subjects I’m fascinated by, like various aspects of computer science, mathematics and physics. My dad always says I’ll go far: exams won’t be an issue, getting a good uni won’t be an issue, and living a successful life won’t be an issue. He says that I’m gifted and I’d agree that some of my characteristics are leagues above my peers. I never made it into a grammar school though, which makes me doubt my intelligence a bit.
I used to program somewhat in 2020-21 and that was mainly Discord bots. I picked up the hobby again in 2023-24 and it’s become a regular thing for me: I’ve learnt Python basically in and out, discord.py in and out, plus a decent knowledge of other libraries that I’ve worked with, pygame and all. I’ve recently picked up C# to develop my own chess engine and I heard from people in the Stockfish community that completing this project would look good on a job application for a complex decently high role in a company. I’m 15 and know nothing of jobs, apprenticeships and the sort, and have never looked for a job as I don’t believe I’d need that much money: pocket money teaches me enough about budgeting and saving that I wouldn’t need a real job.
I’ve made some pretty interesting things and helped a lot of people in the communities I’m a part of. I think if I compile all of them, I’d have a decently prosperous portfolio with my chess engine obviously at the centre of it all.
However, I’ve found myself spending less and less time outside, with friends, etc. I only really spent about 2 weeks or so of my 6-week long summer outside and the rest inside, mainly programming. I picked up this engine thing I think a few days ago and you can see my progress here if you want.
My question is, if i continue on this trajectory of learning new programming languages, making impressive projects (like the chess engine) and keep a good track record of them on my GitHub account, that some time when I’m 16, 17, 18, 19 or some other age in a future, I would become a valuable asset to a company, such that employment would be easy and a high paycheck wouldn’t be out of the ordinary. My 26-year-old half sister tells me that life can change at unexpected moments and that she’s heard of med students who did 9 years in uni just to end up as a DJ in a nightclub and it made me wonder if I’m expecting too much from life.
I’d love to hear some advice from older folks here: whether I should tone down the intensity of my programming, what to focus on and what not to focus on, whether this is the correct decision to make.
Could I perhaps get a job working at Google with my skills?
Or am I just a kid with false hopes that’s gonna get my balls kicked in by life once I reach an age where I have to fend for myself.
Ping me on your replies. I enabled push notifications on my phone for this.

any tl;dr's pls
AFAIK the competition for MAANG is a lot that you would need some leverage and you are expected to solve hard DSA questions in your interviews + there are a lot of people with unique projects
I’m 15
Should've started with that. Cant say for whole globe, but in Europe finding SWE-Job in <18yo is literally impossible - you have (almost) zero legal rights and for every goddamn signature your parents are required
Link to chess project
Ahem.. What does it do? No readme, unfinished docs, just bunch of .cs and .py files. Not really persuasive imho.
IRL just stop a for little, maybe 1-2-5 days, go outside, touch grass (/s), pass school exams while lvl'ing yourself up and thats it. Dont speedrun your life, or else it may be pity to recall spending younger years for some academical-work crap instead of friends
Dude is 15, started creating impressive ( xdoubt ) portfolio, cause of time mgmt problems spends less time with friends, asks whether to push further or not
the chess bot problem is old (to me)
yea I got sm patience 🙂
what are you on about?
you have (almost) zero legal rights and for every goddamn signature your parents are required
that's rather not the case
whats xdoubt? is it
?
Does anyone here even make good money from Python
I feel like the market is oversaturated
solve the right problem to the right client- doesn't matter if you use python or not, just get the job done
define good
netto 3-4k/month - yes, but that's freelance in my case, after all
What type of things do you sell to your client and what platform
the 20s cooldown is weird 😦
The reality is: the path to a SWE is pretty straightforward. Get a degree: you'll learn more than just your courses in college. You don't need to grind, you don't need amazing projects, just set yourself in a path of constant growth and have fun with it. Don't listen the grindset fools.
Life changing money
You don’t need a degree to be a programmer
I know someone who dropped out of college in his final year he was studying computer science
What does it do?
Sorry if I forgot to mention but I only recently started developing it. It’s nowhere near close to being finished. To be honest, I’m not sure why I linked the project since it’s not even up to date. I’m yet to add the commit that cleans up the workspace to only feature .cs files
yea there's freelance and startups
I know lots of exceptions. That doesn't contradict my point.
Can google jobs be remote @fringe sphinx ?
No idea.
some have wfh
Just stop for a little
Is it really ideal to pause a project 4 days into its inception? I still feel like I can keep going.
Or is this more that just the project?
things - eh, it depends; mostly web-stuff (API / websites / ..), sometimes DS/DA when there's nothing else to do
platforms - also depends, mostly Fiverr / Upwork
How much experience you got ?
they were asking you to just relax and don't worry a LOT about it
They're saying what I said: it's a marathon not a sprint. Change your mindset from 'grind' to 'growth'
I’m honestly excited to try a uni course in Computer Science. I think with the programming background and interests in electronic circuits and how they compose hardware would definitely give me assistance and open up many new opportunities for me to learn more content.
officially started ( = created acc and like 2-5 small orders a week) in 2019, really started with about 40h/week in 2022
there's MIT-OCW whose lectures are close to uni's
DA is Data Analysis? What kind of data analysis does a freelancer do? I'm a bit of a noob but this topic really interests me
Absolutely. And learning doesn't have to be all 'hard' stuff: I happen to like math and computing history books. It puts things in perspective
how much experience you got in the IT industry? (im just curious)
Decades.
nice YoE would translate to the leverage
I don't claim to be expert, I've just seen what I've seen.
What’s ur favourite language
So instead of:
1 hour gym
12 hours coding
8 hours sleeping
the rest wandering about
I should aim for a more structured approach like
1 hour gym
2 hours coding
1 hour out with friends
1 hour watching TV
1 hour cycling
1 hour on a walk
2 hours learning a new skill (not furthering coding)
2 more hours coding
1 hour with family
8 hours sleep
the rest filling in more things
This makes way more sense. Thanks Bobby. This was really insightful
4 hours of coding? I dunno, high school homework will pile up quickly.
I need 5 people mainly specialized in discord bots / Мне нужно 5 человек в основном специализирующихся на дискорд ботах
High school is easy lol
Since this way I get much more done / achieved in a day
english server
But so much busy work
True
Bro I don’t know where the Russian server is
I do have exams next year that I’d definitely need to prepare for and alter my routine to feature, but I’d say the core concept stays
Ru server it's not
Other place of learning is Python conference videos. Watch PyCon or Europython videos on YouTube. So many amazing ppl working in fun stuff
Let me honest if any of you guys made 500k from coding would you drop out of college
Don’t listen to the grindset fools.
Also, what do you mean by this?
The people who say you can't succeed if you're not grinding all day long
Python has ru servers?
Oh wow, what do those feature? Are they video conference events or in-person ones?
They're in person, PyCon US was just in Pittsburgh, but they publish the videos online
I don't know
The whole “chase that bag” mentality?
Yah
here's more proof for you
Will definitely take a look, thanks man
idc ru doesn't belong here
DA - yes; it really depends: most of it is dull like Here is data, here are requirements, we want plots, ideas, generalized reports, .. (since most requirements are known and templates are ready, you know where to look for what ~~), sometimes more interesting and NDA'ed stuff 🙂
Unfortunately, GPT & Co. lowered margin profit in this field to almost 0
I don't give a fuck
Please stop. This is an English server. #rules we don't need to be hostile
Ok
So just keep making stuff, keep developing my craft but make sure to stop by and appreciate life because if your head is buried in your laptop, the rest of the world passes by and you never get to witness it.
Absolutely. And, take detours and side quests.
!rule paid
if I can make 500k working as a SWE in college, why'd I drop out if I can just finish my degree, continue earning that money and then pretty much theoretically not have to work ever again after like a couple years
- college has the socialization aspect and such
if measuring by time-to-market - definitely python, but i dont have strong preferences (unless we're talking about cpp/c - then i'd opt out)
I see, thanks
Unfortunate about GPT
Best pro tip is to spend some time trying to help in #1035199133436354600
You'll learn so much every time
i joined my college in a thought that I can co-code
if im making 500k a year while in college at that point I'd probably go into a masters or something too
Two more things:
- What detours and side quests are you alluding to?
- What do I do about all my other friends who want to wreck their sleep schedule because “it’s the summer and they have unlimited free time to do so”? I want to interact with them but they’re all burned out from torching their internal body clock staying awake until 5am the next day
yeah, might as well have fun, lol
You could drop out and still be making money
i don't believe in micro-management. i just get the job done
but what do you gain from that?
I frequently find myself checking both #1035199133436354600 and #discord-bots for people to help. Became a bit of an addiction like checking your post to see if it got any likes or repeatedly refreshing your notifications to see if anyone new has messaged you.

from dropping out? ||debt||, for sure
Do you think he gave a shit about college
Holy fuck, you have a son?? And he goes to college?? Jesus bro, I’m speaking to a fucking father
to a ~50yo dude 💀
yes, that's why he was in college
The problem is you only hear about the success stories. Survivorship bias
well, I don't really care about what he gave a shit about, I'd like to like... further my education, it's just fun, yk
He didn’t finish though and look at him
Now my point is you don’t need an education to be successful
look at the many others who did not succeed going the same route... wait, you don't see them
I had the pleasure of being invited to give Harvey Mudd's commencement speech this year.

Oh wow, I didn't realize he gave a commencement, ty bm'd
Sure but if you're making $500k already in college might as well just enjoy the social aspect of it
well, tbf, you do need some education, you may not need formal education I suppose, though it does make life easier
will I be considered self employed if my job is contractual? I am still an employee getting monthly income...
Can you please further explain how 50% hike will not actually be 50%? Is that because unicorm might be giving me stock option when they arent public?
It is a great watch if you havent already
It would probably take some convincing for sure, but it’s probably just to do it with them. My friend says she only stays up to speak to me, so if I go to sleep she’ll probably end up asleep at most half an hour later. Best thing to do is do it with them. It’s probably a bit harder, considering your boy’s in college, but there’s probably ways around it. You could ask one of his friends for help to fix his sleep schedule.
Talk to someone in India who has done this. In Us, it could be structured as either employee or contractor.
Didnt think about this but it is an important factor
so if you are a CEO of a service-based company, the question is are you self-employed, lets assume you got the comp registered
no one argues that college is a must. but it's not relevant to the discussion of the best path to take
CEO != owner
yea not always
typically often tbh, once companies get to a certain size most owners step away
but it is likely that a service-based comp. is bootstrapped and the owner is working
intelligence is subjective. i’d say that learning speeds are built-in but knowledge is acquired. would you think a 21 year old with a brain that can crunch numbers at light speed would be where they are today if they didnt know what numbers are?
i would say self employed if ceo is owner
Learning speeds: this is an interesting topic because you can grow your ability to learn. One example is the concept of mathematical maturity as multidimensional : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematical_maturity
brain is a muscle and you can train it, that includes "learning speeds"
See the five strand part here, it's really an interesting read: https://blogs.ams.org/matheducation/2019/04/15/precise-definitions-of-mathematical-maturity/
(wait, is brain actually a muscle though? anyway)
its fat majorly
On the topic of learning and orders of learning: https://potentialplusuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/S306-Higher-Order-Thinking-Skills-180611.pdf and https://cft.vanderbilt.edu/guides-sub-pages/blooms-taxonomy/
Oh, this is very interesting
Mathematical maturity, I'll look into that
so no matter your starting point, you can always improve your brain
Since folks talk a lot about freelancing here, has anyone read https://www.holloway.com/b/art-for-money ?
hi
Good idea to take a 10 dollar an hour job if it means I'm a software engineer?
Honestly it's worth it for me because I desperately need experience
that really depends on where you live, and if you can live on $10 /hr
I wouldn't touch it because I couldn't live off of that.
If i pursue my masters in the field of computer science , will i be overqualified for some entry level swe positions as i already will have my bachelors degree
On the other hand , i didnt pursue my bachelors in the US which is the country im seeking to relocate to in order to study and get a job
So according to my understanding i would need a masters degree. Am i wrong?
Hey, Ezii here i newly joined here randomly ,I am a beginner i only know Java, learning java dsa and web development simultaneouly I don't know what shall I do next I am just confused , I want to make into GSOC this year, I am trying hard can anyone Suggest me what should I do next in the upcoming months so that that I can make into GSOC or ATLEAST contribute to Open Source
No, you won't be overqualified.
You don't -need- a US degree to land a SWE job, but it probably helps especially if your degree is not from a well known Uni / non English speaking country. A Us degree also may help with work authorization, search for OPT and Stem OPT

if you're not a citizen, you're not necessarily allowed to work. you need a visa that lets you work
What abt h1b visas
Or are they so intangible to obtain that opt visas are my only way
If I don't have a lot of impressive coding projects to show off or revelant work experience. What exactly should I put on my resume.
Unimpressive coding projects
H1b's are difficult to get. You should research this topic in detail
Thank you , i definetly will
Whilst you are still here , i would like to ask another question albeit a bit weird
What holds more worth , a bachelors degree from an ivy league university or masters degree from the same
depends on where u live for sure. in third world countries that is salary of a middle ranked software dev.
in some first world european countries as i heard applicable too.
So depends on you country 😉
That is if it is full time job i mean.
For freelancing stuff it is all a bit different
Well let me ask it this way then , do companies care more about you if you did you bachelors in an ivy leage uni compared to doing your masters in an ivy leage uni?
What are the career prospects for system engineering?
Interesting question, never thought about this. Very few people go to Ivy League to begin with, so I think they'd be impressed by either
Ive always wondered when people exclaim that they graduated from harvard or yale or any ivy league uni, is it bc they did their undergraduate there or is it bc they did their masters there
I'd say that DevOps is one of the biggest remaining job security bastions. This is personal opinion mostly. Yet, pretty much every person in my area I talk with say: "yes, I can do terraform but there's nothing I'd love more than for someone else to do that for us". All the cloud shenanigans are badly documented so someone with the know-how is valued in gold.
terraform and cloud provider infra is usually documented very well, and usually working from moderately low attempts of tries right away.
Things hit real shit when u start working with kubernetes, then the real wormhole of problems appear, and nothing works unless u very hard debugging it, including diving all the time to source codes of projects
When applying for a masters degree , does my highschool gpa/marks matter
Probably not
no
Depends what you mean by systems engineer. In some companies, the role is more like a sales engineer: a customer facing technical role. It's a great job, you meet a lot of people.
Do people usually pursue their masters after they have done their bachelors in an ivy league uni or is this too vague a question
Unclear what exactly you mean but: people do their masters many different ways. Some stay at their Uni, some switch Uni's, some do it part time while working, and nowadays a lot of people are doing online .
Mhmm
I doubt anyone will care about you highschool gpa just your bachelor's
once you start a bachelors degree (or an associates), everything you did in highschool permanently ceases to matter.
Dint knw that
But just for the sake of asking is my hs gpa only comprised of my 10th grade and my 12th grade marks
Or does it start all the way from 9th grade all the way till 12th grade
What country are you in? In US, high school gpa is 9-12
India
nice
hey stel! long time no talk. how are you?
!rules ad
pretty sure advertising personal project / pages out of the blue is allowed on here
Is allowed or isnt allowed?
as stated in the rule above , not allowed
Ok no worries will remove ! Thanks
pycharm vs vscode?
is it hard to get a help desk job with experience of helping college students with tech issues and on year of cs on my resume? is there anything else i need for a qa or it help desk job ? or do i just keep applying
do i need a certificate? for help desk ?
hello is my resume good for it help desk and qa?
Are extracurriculars necessary for grad school
- What happened to the plan to be millionaire?
- Your education does not specify which degree you are working towards to
- Your resume is full of typos. That will get it rejected
stupid question probably, but what kind of CV is required to get literally any job in coding? I'm trying to do some courses rn, but no idea in what direction I'm supposed to go to so that I don't end up wasting time
https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/jakes-resume/syzfjbzwjncs is a good template to start with
what about if I'm doing it on my own without getting a degree?
Then you remove the degree part
Though, in terms of career, a CS degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
I'll keep that in mind thanks. So I am right to worry that getting hired would be much harder without a degree?
even people with degrees cant find jobs rn 💀
That would be choosing a path of extreme resistance with far less opportunities and far lower compensation. The technical term for someone who is 17-18 and does not want to get a degree would be "fucking up your future"
Im not 17-18 I just want to change careers in the future and my current career has nothing to do with CS
Why don't you share more context about yourself?
Like?
I'm not sure the statistics support this. AFAIK, they're finding work.
Like education, age, location, experience, goals, etc.
do we have any statistics tho? seems like comparing apples to bananas to pineapples smh
rule of thumb still persists: if you are good, you will find a job
Yah, I only have anecdotal evidence (namely that the people who are asking for help tend to either not have a degree or have a not-good resume)
I'm 28, I didn't have the possibility to go to uni so I didn't, I live in London, my goal is to change careers and trying various things I found coding to be interesting and sort of rewarding
Current field? Have a degree (oh sorry c you said no)
Random advice:
- I know people around your age who went back to school and did great!
- I can't speak for the UK, but it's common for european countries to have upskilling or conversion programs
- The easiest point of entry for people like you will be frontend or peripheral jobs (ex: QA)
- In terms of profile, it always come down to education, projects and experience. Given you have neither education nor relevant experience, projects will matter a lot
- You will have to stand out against all the new grads who spent 4-5 years full time studying and working towards a degree as well as all the non-degree holders like yourself who try to get in. So that's a lot of competition and thus the bar is pretty high
i still have that plan and i put cs as my education and also typos i did not misspell anything
someone told me to apply to help desk job since i don’t have the cs degree so that’s why i sent my resume
what’s wrong with my resume ?
Look up "How to job hunt like a hacker" and follow his advice. It has helped about 200 people so far. Including me.
- For your degree, you need to state the type. Is it a bsc in CS, an AA in SE, other?
- So
for there student accountis correct english? So is1 years?
a bunch of typos
bachelor degree in cs omg your right thanks typos i’ll fix
so it’s just my typos? will this help me land a help desk job
once i fix those typos is that the only thing about my resume?
I'm going to be working on three projects (Task Manager for Windows, Task Manager for Linux, and a Messaging application) do you think these will help me get into a college or get a job by any chance at all or are these just good projects to learn python better?
In terms of getting into a college, I would recommend to look at the admission criteria. Beyond that, more likely to be useful for learning python better
Does anyone know any python business ideas?
Selling software and services
Though it's asking the wrong question
What would be the right question?
What's the most searched job in python? Data analysis?
python and programming languages in general are just tools, like a screw driver.
So your question is akin to asking what business ideas are there with screwdrivers.
So considering tools can be used for so many things, it's better to ask questions around the end than the mean to an end.
You should also note that in terms of career, a degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
The question is sort of meaningless. Why are you asking?
Who cares what ppl are searching for?
I can sell you my idea that will make you $$$ if you pay me $400k first 🔺
I was just curious
I would guess right now, most job seeking are chasing jobs in the hottest topic right now: ai/ml
Note this is highly dependent on your location and market.
I would suggest to check on job sites and see which keywords bring the most job ads.
And note as well that what is popular today may not be as popular in 3months
@safe ice your message was removed for containing unapproved advertising.
hello do you need any certs for a help desk job?
No. You do not need certs to do help desk. And dont do help desk. You will never escape out of it and people will treat you like you are subhuman.
someone told me to do help desk as entry to tech how won’t i ever escape?
They dont want you to advance up.
escape what and what will people treat me like ?
my goal is to advance up tho
Its a dead end. They will complain about how their monitor doesn't work and backstab you if you erk them. You are wasting your time with help desk. Only people who are scum move up.
thanks well a few people in here told me to do help desk so that’s why i’m applying i’ll keep it in mind
Well this is discord and people dont generally give good advice especially on discord. Just get some good certs and hope the job market gets better because they are cutting a lot of jobs now.
what certs a+? and what other jobs could i look at with no degree all i heard was qa and help desk are the only ones
the irony
so help desk is a bad job guys? that’s what one guy just told me
see i knew it a entry point ok thanks and just apply you seen my resume ?
did you fix the typos?
here is my resume i fixed my typos what do you think? do i need certs?
yes
well, can you show the updated cv
and i only see a few help desk jobs how could i find more in my area ?
ok i’ll send it in a few
not sure there is another way besides, yk, searching
ok thanks well after i send my resume again i’ll apply to about 20 more again
i hope a land a job soon i really wanna land into tech
also what is a qa do have to fix my resume to land that job?
tech la la land
i hope a land in it mate i work a warehouse job where it’s 100 degrees inside but no one cares mate but it’s ok
just use grammarly. there are many errors. "assisting colleagues students". "assisiting". "studets"
you are in a degree program. you are already "escaping" help desk. when you graduate, you will be qualified for swe positions. i don't know why you are applying to help desk roles right now: you should be applying to internships. i see you're still using this horrible template when you were recommended a different one
Why do you care so much about the warehouse job if you are studying in a college as well?
I swear I feel like I'm at the precipice of wanting to give up and yet, there's this little voice telling me to not and to carry on working. I really do not want to do a degree but having too much trouble getting an apprenticeship. I'm contemplating, doing the foundation year and apply to apprenticeships throughout that year until I get accepted into one. Mentally, I'm too exhausted to do a conventional degree again
i’ll use grammarly
because that’s the job i’m doing now and it’s painful
but aren't you doing a degree as well?
Does that magically make life not suck? I think he doesn't like the job at the warehouse due to it being 100 degrees
yes
yes i am i am 1 year into cs and taking again this year it’s just i really wanna get into tech now like help desk to get out this situation im in
yea it been hard for me but people really don’t care they just want me to work a job
but it’s my life i’m living everyday i gotta get up and work a warehouse job where it’s extreme heat i hope i can get my life together soon
oh internships i’ll do that too
it will be difficult to "get out" until you finish your degree
Stay hydrated ✊ and use a different resume template like was suggested. Black and white. Put more about your new skills that people would hire for. Microsoft Word is a given for anyone who can breathe.
Wow, I thought you were exaggerating
For the resume: listen to the advice. You'll get some tough love here on the resume: everyone does. It takes time to make a good resume.
ok a black and white resume fix typos and put some more about my new skills anything else ?
i wish i was too
It's going to take multiple passes. Look at other templates. Use a simple template, like Jake's Template.
love jake's template, i recommend that shit to all my peeps
where is jake template ? i use a website for my template
latex? vow, based
fr
latex is not necessary for resumes. it's not really worth it on its own. there are tons of word and google doc templates that pretty much the same
_says the guy bragging bout his latex resume _
given that I have used latex for many things, including my resume, isn't it reasonable that I would know about the effort involved?
I don't disagree, it's just the template I've seen that I like the most as an example for layout... i haven't seen a good google doc example, do you have one?
thanks i’ll try this
pypon
Im in the same situation here bro 😅
what’re the odds to get a job at a startup if you actually know some programming languages fluently and can problem solve and aren’t just someone who finished a course and got certified without a degree
Employers are going to look for demonstrated skills. A degree just says you have demonstrated a basic skillset and have had some basic training in some key areas.
if your resume is good and demonstrates that you have those skills, then fairly good
ok thnk you both
The certificates and degrees also demonstrate that you take learning and growth seriously. Technology requires continuous learning.
A cs degree will remain the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
You are asking in the wrong place . See #❓|how-to-get-help
im not asking for help, im asking for rating
You are asking for ratings in the wrong place. See #❓|how-to-get-help

I'm gonna get back to job hunting. Feeling stagnant or not excited with my current job anymore. Can anyone help review my resume/CV? Do I need to make my Summary shorter/smaller? The resume is generated from LinkedIn btw.
How would I know if I'm FAANG material?
You would know if you applied to one, went through the interview process and finally received an offer
I guess I should skill up and get certs or something
Hey guys , its crazy my country does have only a few guys into IT and from those guys majority are only juniors cause the experienced ones always go to international enterprises so there is no experienced programmers here to train those juniores lol or even to look after they
this the updated
I suggest tailoring the resume for the job rather than saying you're sysadmin/devops/dev, etc. The experience and project section should speak loudest, the summary should be short and simple. 3 pages? What's in other pages?
2nd page more job exp. 3rd page my education
Generally, your goal should be to get this into one page.
Your layout is very inefficient, wastes a lot of space.
See templates like: #career-advice message or #career-advice message
Alright. I'll make a one-pager resume

checked spelling in resume?
hi
.
Can we drop the cringe and stick to the topic please and thanks
did i ask
Let your resume speak, you don't need a long summary. Also don't add double quotes around the summary. Do you have any Uni education? Are you going to pursue Uni?
Hi, I am Piyush Batra , From India , College 1st year student , pursuing Btech in Computer Science, Intersted In Wb Dev and Learning Python
no i don't, i can only go to a university after 2years from now.-- i am in school.
turned out to be a 6 month only contract, I said I will pass.
made the decision easy
for your experience, i don't really have an idea of what you did. the second bullet is just listing arbitrary topics. some of them seem to be very basic: "Github Repositories", "Api key"
Actually there was a lot i worked with and learned in the internship.
But i haven't mentioned that because those things were way to specific to the company.
Which is not much useful for almost all the ai roles in other companies.
Should i include them?
skills are transferable. if you don't say that you did things, people are going to assume that you didn't do anything
Thanks a lot! for the feedback.
i will definitely include them.
guys i got a question
so i passed ap comp sci exam and got the credits for it, but it was taught in python, should i take the intro to comp sci course in college, im only asking because its taught in c++
just learn c++ on your own. unless you get some benefit like skipping an intro course (which if you already have the credit for, shouldn't matter). wait, are you in high school right now? incoming college freshman ?
college freshman
I want to offer deep learning mentoring but cant find a way to offer it to get paid, linkedin is ineffective for it I dont get range as in marketing sense
i wouldn't recommend taking the intro course then. you can get ahead, and you'll have a bad time in an intro course
I offer for free, but cant to do it always, I have 0 income
when I try to apply to paid mentoring platform I get rejected, but on free platform its easy to get in
today I had session and my mentee siad I was very helpful,
ok I appreciate it but must get paid
maybe I should get career mentor 😄
I think this is some psychological or and also career related
Hello friends
You meant hello world?
Anyone here from the ece branch?
I'm an ece maniac, tho I'm in 1st year lol
Still I wanna practice webd, devops and java py etc.
Can anyone here tell me if we have any lang in 1st sem acc to NEP??
if we have any lang in 1st sem acc to NEP
What?
Acc to national education policy do we have any lang to study in our first semester? That's what I'm asking
wtf, is it some Indian stuff? never seen these abbreviations before
My uni follows NEP, but the syllabus is not released yet
Hahah nw
I don't know India, but can't you just ask the department what language it's taught in?
Hi, I'm a computer engineering student and it's better to enter the market and LinkedIn with complete skills and start working, or start working and working now that I'm a beginner. I would be grateful if someone who is a professional in this field can guide me
Yep I'll
It's better to focus on your studies and doubling down on them by going further and deeper.
So take your school projects further, ask questions, be curious and make your own projects
So that you have a strong case by the time you graduate
So, I should not post the link now and when I have built some strong projects, I will post the account, is that correct?
There's no such thing as "complete skills", the learning never ends.
You generally want to graduate with an internship or two on your resume if you reasonably can
I am not sure to understand what link you are referring to
You're asking when you should start a LinkedIn account? Sooner is better than later so you can take your time building your network
website linkdin
oh yeah, you should start your account. Don't wait and connect with your classmates, etc.
Yes, thanks for your help guys
I’m doing a biotech degree, I know beginner-intermediate python but I enjoy it so want to try and get more advanced. Is there much value career wise for python/programming in the biotech industry and if so which route should I take?
Pretty much every scientific field uses Python nowadays. I'm not in biotech, but I know there's a ton of Python in BME
Yeah thanks
Maybe check out LinkedIn job posts and see what skills employers are looking for? Maybe specific keywords or tech? How many employers are asking for R or Matlab vs Python, or specific Python skills? For instance
Do actually some of u get payed being a programmer
some do
There are at least 20 million professional software engineers in the world and a few of us do follow this channel, yes
Can support this theory, chances are high.
I think i will be a programmer thats why im asking the question
What would you like to ask a programmer?
Possibly web developer
Yes, and i am in web development field.
Ask your question already what u wished to ask 😉 Too many pre questions. It will be more productive to ask directly the end question
Thanks, but not rn im planning to start learning after i get back home since im on vacation cuz is uncomfortable working while moving

Heyy
Hello everyone, can any of u suggest good resources to learn data analysis? it can be paid or free, just should have all the topics/techs thats gonna be needed for the same
Also, that question is best asked in #data-science-and-ml
Practical data skills you can apply immediately: that's what you'll learn in these no-cost courses. They're the fastest (and most fun) way to become a data scientist or improve your current skills.
I have google collab could any one edit and update it for me???
thank u :D
hiy guys can anyone help?import dns.resolver
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'dns'
im studing my 1st year computer science and i just coding, solving problems and now i need to enter a domain of software and im interest in mobile app development -flutter and suffs but i dont anything about it so where can i find resource for learning it
Python isn't a popular language for that, so you might be better served by Discord servers for Android or iOS development.
You must be really good at Spanish.
oops, was meant to be Spanish then English, fixed on my end
most recent experience first
right align your work locations, march 2021 should be capitalised
you dont really need to mix your spoken languages with the programming languages, it looks weird
you should probably talk more about your projects instead of unrelated work experiences
dont really need a life philosophy or day in the life of section
im assuming this resume is to go in front of human eyes directly, otherwise you should switch to a single column template
i got it from overleaf https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/altacv-template/trgqjpwnmtgv
maybe that wasn't such a great idea after all
sure, but this is meant to look good to humans, automated systems dont care about your colours and columns
https://www.seek.com.au/career-advice/article/free-resume-template Have a look at seek. See if you like those.
there's already a popular template pinned and its from the US so should work just fine
you can keep both versions but unless you know its going onto someone's desk directly i would use the pinned template
I came here to make that joke.
If you're not applying for front-end jobs where your sense of visual style is important, I'm a fan of keeping things bland and vanilla to focus more on the substance and content
This is a rare case where I like the two column layout, and I think this is a creative take on the template.
English is probably not necessary to add, somewhat takes away from the technical point. Also, confusing to list alongside programming languages.
I thought you also had some college/Uni? Or am I mistaken? "33 discount", do you mean 33%? You probably want to divert less attention from the recent work experience because they're non-coding jobs. Shorten the bullets, and use more real estate to show your Python/programming knowledge. I feel like you have more knowledge than comes across here. Your projects just describe what Nuitka does, not what you did.
Also, experience is in wrong order... recent to oldest, not oldest to recent.
i went for a bit then decided to drop out because it was being detrimental to my interests.
i think the latex didn't render there properly because i definitly had the $ sign included,
i'm working on the other resume template with the mentioned suggestions
a great example of why latex is not ideal unless you're learning it for other stuff. $ is a special character, it's for math formatting
haters 🖐️😌
i'm struggling with the subposition thing, ugh
march 2021
Im sorry but its the first thing my eye catches
fix march capitalization. Do you have more projects to add? Something that shows a longer time window? Everything being "present" implies you just started with Python.
You'll want to work on the project bullets to be a little clearer... and drop more "skill" keywords in that and freelance dev. You want to make it clear you know Python / and other skills.
should mongo go under language or framworks hm
i don't have any public projects that show a longer time window no, the stubgen and perf suite are barely a couple of months old iirc
Skills are most impactful when they're in a project or experience.. I tend to ignore them in the skills section
Even non-public, but something you can talk to, is fine.
sure, gimme a bit
February 202 next to manager
Maybe re-order the work experience to be most recent on top, right now it looks like you were demoted from manager to repair tech
kaggle is amazing
is a degree in cs even worth it?
im having a crisis over what to choose at the end of my first year of engineering
software engineering sounds nice, but im worried i can do electrical or smth and then self learn coding on my own time instead of spending so much on tuition for it
I think yes but for you
you would still spend the same ish on tuition, no?
would disagree: in middle to more popular unis number of new undergrads as well as prices in CS >>> engineering
"Coding" is a very small portion of a CS program.
are the prices different, though?
cant say for all unis, but for those i checked difference is 20..50%/y
can you link one?
Yah, that's interesting... never heard of price differences per major. Not a thing in US, afaik.
in LATAM it's common

Hello, your message has been removed for violating server rules.
I'm not sure if this is the right channel for this. I learned Python in college and supplemented on youtube, so I wasn't able to answer this question very well.
I have a coworker who is a COBOL programmer, who will be shifting into Python, but has no Python specific experience.
What would be a good direction for him to get started in Python? I'm leaning towards a youtube series of some kind, but wouldn't know by who since I look for very specific topics.
It's a great question... #python-discussion is usually best channel for "how to learn python" questions, but I'll take a stab at it here:
- Find a good tutorial. There's ebooks (Automate the Boring Stuff, A Byte of Python are two popular ones), youtube channel (Corey Schaffer), or online/free courses like CS50P.
** A more advanced tutorial is https://docs.python.org/3/tutorial/index.html, really for people with strong programming experience in another language... I don't know how helpful this would be for a COBOL programmer tho. - Start with small programming projects. The simpler the better.
- There are practice sites like exercism and codewars to practice skills
- Ask for help in #python-discussion - there's experts and beginners alike there.
Wrong channel, ask in #python-discussion or open a help thread: #❓|how-to-get-help
Sorry I'll remove it
Thanks! I'll pass on the info 😄
I definitely feel engineering is a much better use of tuition money. At our local campus they have a data science lab where you can use python and c++ for coding projects.
How true is it that fang companies don't care if you went to college
!true
In theory, they do accept equivalent experience. In practice it's not really happening because it's very difficult to meet that bar.
In terms of career, a degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
Hey folks, if i'm willing to prep for hackathons what is the first step should i look forward to? Need opinions please
If worse come to worst when going to college, you at least connect with people who are interested in the same things as you
Offline communication is underrated
are they any help desk employees in here i need help with my resume and getting a help desk job
like, you are hosting a hackathon? or participating in one?
FAANG jobs are the most competitive jobs, and the most competitive jobs must filter people based on their resumes just to get to a manageable number... it's unlikely to get your resume through without a degree or some very special circumstances
Feel free to share anonymized resume screenshots right here in this channel but there's also a weekly thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ITCareerQuestions/comments/1f2a3e1/week_35_2024_resume_review/
review anyone please @
I'm exploring and attending any hackathons organised online/offline
Just don't want to bottleneck the requirements of any hacks
So true as no one wills to go out
Yeah i'm doing the exact same thing
Has anyone tried data science and analytics courses on Coursera ?How is it ?
Youll be fine. There isn’t really any “prep” to do, most of the time it’s just a chill event to build things
This is Elon musk
It is paid but you can audit for free
hi, any help or tips regarding my resume is much appreciated 🙂
i removed the info on top of education
(I hope this is the correct channel for this)
Hello everyone,
I’m currently looking to expand my skills in Python and explore potential career paths in AI. I have a solid understanding of Python basics, including variables, loops, and OOP, and I practice data structures and algorithms (DSA) regularly. However, I’m unsure about the practical, real-world applications of these skills and how to advance further.
I’m particularly interested in how various forms of media (text, images, audio, etc.) are read, recognized, and processed to generate appropriate responses—especially in AI. I’d appreciate any advice on:
- Advanced Python topics I should focus on.
- Additional skills (e.g., specific libraries, mathematical concepts) that are essential for AI.
- Practical applications or projects that could help bridge the gap between theory and practice.
- Suggestions on how to explore different fields within AI (like NLP, computer vision, etc.) to determine where my passions might lie.
- Career opportunities in the fields of Robotics and AI.
- Whether Robotics and AI remain distinct fields in today’s world or are increasingly integrated.
Looking forward to your insights and recommendations!
Thanks in advance for your help!
Yeah but one of them is licensed and one of them I can technically learn for free
In the US most people with the job title "engineer" are not licensed regardless of discipline. A PE is mostly valuable to people who plan to do signoff on public projects or be professional contractors in certain fields.
So I wouldn't recommend making licensure a factor in deciding your major, at least if you live in the US.
I took the FE exam when I graduated just in case. Today I don't know any PEs although I know a lot of "little-e" engineers.
That said, I like the idea of taking EE and learning software "on the side". It's kinda what I did (iirc Robin is doing EE with a CS minor, too). But it's only sort of "on the side". In the first place your EE coursework will include some programming anyway and furthermore, lots of EEs do write code in their day to day, so it's just smart.
But pick it because you have a genuine interest in it and want to make it your career. Don't make your major a fallback option in case you can't get a software job.
It sounds like you've just learned the basics, but not much experience with building projects, using APIs or solving problems with Python. This experience is necessary; you should spend some time building increasingly difficult projects and become a stronger developer. #python-discussion is a good channel to hang out in and learn some of these topics.
Kaggle.com/learn is a good resource for some Python data fundamentals: things you'll need to know
AI is a massive topic, Harvard's free CS50 for AI course might be a nice intro to this
guys, for a 90 day review would you prepare a nice looking deck that has your projects and the progress you made?
i wanna make sure i nail this shi
Where are you at in terms of formal education? Are you in high school, do you have a degree?
My overall advice would be to get a relevant degree and formal work experience. Self-learning is a given and a must, but pure self-learning is playing on ultra-hard mode
I am starting out uni
looking for y’all’s opinions
ROFzL no, I wouldn't. It may depend on company culture though, am used to smaller shops
Is this for probation? Never had anything even close to a "formal review" for that and no one i know has either
Its just a 1on1 usually and they say congrats you pass probation, you're eligible for benefits
For a dev? No, but I'd prepare notes. For your job, probably. I'd certainly have my talking points prepared.
Yes I am in need of knowing what kind of projects to build cause most of the suggested ones feel childish to me like making calculator or qr code generator (few examples of what I see when I search for project ideas) I would surely check out #python-discussion and hangout a bit there
hi
it’s not probation but i’d rather have talking pts prepped
That's good! Keep exploring what you're most interested and I'm sure you'll do fine. Do keep an eye on the market so you can plan for internships, but the skills you mention are all useful ones
Simple (childish) ones are where you should start. I know it'll feel too easy, but you need that xp.
not a dev, for that role i sent you a long time ago. i’ve been working in it for around a month now, it’s my 4th week
Yup, it's a good habit to take notes every week of what you accomplished. It's easy to forget. I forget what I worked on last week.
I will check out the kaggle site and the CS50 for AI
yea it’ll come in handy for that promotion when i want it
But ideally, the talking points aren't about bragging, but about what went well (successes) and challenges (where you could grow)
Thank you! I would keep an eye on that
my slide formatting has gotten so much better compared to before. attention to detail has improved
hi . i am a student and want to learn python .Can anyone give me the Roadmap please
Imo, nobody will care about your successes... but it's the growth mindset. Show your interest, identify things you didn't understand, etc.
Start in #python-discussion , and ask for a tutorial.
thanks man .Thanks you replied.
I guess you're right, but how would I progress from those simple ones if they are the only ones that we find when we try to search for projects?
!kin is one source of ideas
The Kindling projects page on Ned Batchelder's website contains a list of projects and ideas programmers can tackle to build their skills and knowledge.
kaggle.com/learn, I think I mentioned, is another great resource
i’m taking the SIE for example and the pro sci change management cert. super relevant for my job.
fuck the CFA 🗿🗿🗿
Yah, just don't brag-present.
nah dawg
did i mention im going to philly in september for a work trip?
One of my vendors recently brag-presented how great they are at support to us, showing us their response times to our tickets.
oh fuck that noise LMAO
My favorite part was how they emphasized their "median" response time.
dAtA oRiEnTeD
I would surely bookmark this site to get some ideas
deloitte reached out to me for an interview and i told them to reach out to my friend
Okay!
ah i see psvm is up, long time no see
(i didn’t apply to deloitte, they reached out to me on HS)
Thank you for the guidance everyone :D
they were like lowkey about it
imma lie i love python and its community, i truly believe they are some of the best and most talented people who have dedicated their lives for a great coding language and contribution to the AI scene which i aboslutely love. I don't mind its speed or cons i only look at its pros
Lol ty
DM me if you want to learn (for free) how to read the rules to this discord server
Can we all not dm each other
Hello, your message has bene removed for violating server rules.
Hello everyone
I'm not sure if this is a career related discussion, it's about university and since that leads to career I hope it counts so here goes
I'm at a cross roads.
Should I pursue a Bachelor's in CS or AI?
I hear CS is oversaturated nowadays and that AI is going to be big in the future...
But there's also the fact that CS is broad with AI as a subspecialty and AI is more specialized.
Thanks in advance
What school offers a bachelors in AI, and how does it differ from a CS program?
I think it's a pretty new degree program; i've heard some references of it before
It's my understanding that it's basically a subset of CS
** that was more a loaded question to get them to research it and compare the programs
sounds like a scam to take advantage of the hype ngl
yah, but there's a long history of this... google: "bachelors in game development", for instance
I wouldn't call it a scam necessarily. Just marketing
Data Science was the most recent one
DS is the rare case where it makes sense to me... a lot more math courses.
Yea it might be good but it came to being from the DS hype
Yup, anything to increase enrollment 🙂
It seems that a lot of jobs in the US allows remote work. I'm wondering how likely is it for me to find works that allow me to work from outside the US and without a US visa (or will help me to get a US visa)?
Relatively unlikely for them to do a direct hire like that. They will work with local partners and hire that way.
The uni course Im enrolling into is a degree in AI and Robotics. Seems like a decent blend between engineering and computing with most of the degree comprising of coursework and practicals (only one exam in the 1st year)
So, as someone without a US visa/citizen/green card, my chance to getting a job in the US is near zero?
Depends on your skills and your network but generally that's true. Getting admitted as a student persuing an advanced degree is easier in comparison
how about someone already with an advanced degree?
That increases your chances significantly, especially with relevant experience... Your only way to really know is to start networking and applying.
How do I network with people from another country? just start spamming linked in?
Not spamming no. But taking an actual interest in what people are doing. For example, if you see someone from your country working at a US company and ask them about how they got where they are, most people will be willing to share their story. (This willingness may vary by culture, but in general it doesn't hurt to ask people questions out of sincere interest in hearing whatever they have to say.)
Just like you're doing here, but a bit more targeted to the most relevant individuals
I see, fair enough
Just to echo dowcet's original point: as a technical matter, workers in remote countries will go through intermediaries (whether forming their own company, working through a in-country outsourcer, or from a subsidiary).
The first strategy should be to look for in-country postings for MNCs. It's going to be hard, because these are highly desirable jobs too.
The second strategy is to leverage some unique skill or connection or relationship, such as a referral (again, what Dowcet says) or connection at a conference and/or meetup. If the company wants to hire you, they can find a vehicle to make it happen... even if it's channeled through an in-country firm.
I don't have any unique connection or rlship. All I have is a, somewhat, unique skill
maybe I should start being more active online using my IRL named account...
What country are you in?
speaking as person from this remote country:
- as graduate best joining some local company and level up in competencies to qualify for middle dev in skills and experience. Whatever company.
- Then outsourcing company is kind of really good bet. They work with clients from Europe, USA and etc, and exactly provide you with working there. Kind of easiest to enter workplace of this kind.
- Then once your qualifications, tech and communicating skills really grow, i think good chances to look more independently from outsourcing company. When u already have experience working with relevant to their market tech, already worked in international teams, having qualifications... it is easier to meet requirements and finding company wishing to help with immigration. After all... companies are more willing to help people with senior level to immigrate than for middle devs. and for juniors nobody will do it
TLDR: Skillful and experienced workforce is in demand.
Nationality: Indonesian
Australia physically with a permanent residency
ah, u already immigrated... that kind of changes things
how so?
there are two main problems why a person could be having difficulty to get hired in another countries.
- Work permit!
- and language barrier.
- and in case of IT also: basically education/qualifications stuff
If u already immigrated, i suppose u should have taken care of Work Permit, then getting hired in Australia should be way easier for you.
there remain other two problems though
- Potential problems from cultural fit i guess can be too, if getting hired to local company
Is the job market that much worse in Australia than the US? I'd guess oads of US companies have subsidiaries there with remote or hybrid jobs but I could be wrong
Dari mana di Indonesia? I'm from the US but I've spent some time there 😉
I have yet to meet an Indonesian person working in tech in the US, not that it doesn't happen
I already have a job in Australia, so that's not an issue at all.
Does this means that it would be difficult for me to get US jobs?
Depends on your qualifications as i mentioned.
US is extremely not welcome for immigrants in general, and companies would have to have very strong reason to help you with work visa
Best to be somewhere around Senior already / having very high demand skills, for companies to bother with helping you with visa
Kind of easier chances to immigrate to US by winning Green Card lottery 😅 That at least how other known to me software devs immigrated
gw dari jakarta haha
The MNCs have branches here, but most of them are just marketing, sales, etc2. The research jobs are in the US.
I am also aiming for smaller/medium startups literring the silicon valley.
Like, for practical purposes, there's very limited industry AI research role in Australia
I think I have a very high demand skills.
Assuming I already have a high demand skill, I'm not sure what to do next.
mm it is not enough having just "high demand skill", you need to be actually expert in it you know.
and also having good negotiating skills to sell yourself better pretty much.
It is a good start to having portfolio, u mentioned AI? Articles on kaggle or other platform, making projects you know...
...showing that your skill level is more than words and resume.
Portfolio is often asked from people from middle level during international hirings (unless u are just outsourced through intermediate company)
Hiring costs internationally significantly more than locally, companies will prefer making no mistake i can imagine
So.. u say
I think I have a very high demand skills.
but can you provide proofs for that, be convincing enough. That's the question
I got some published papers
there's very limited industry AI research role in Australia
That may be true, but if anyone gets hired out of Australia to US startups I can almost guarantee you they have local experience in those companies first
local = US, or local = Australia?
