I agree with you but this stuff invites many curveballs. If you're willing to study up to be 100 % certain, keep it but I wouldn't feel comfy (but that's a me-problem I think)
you can sure use it the same way but I get different insights from ANOVA compared to OLS
the Note isn't irrevelant imo
They're functionally equivalent, that's at least something I remember from econometrics. I forgot why but you can get the same insights from both (in that special case)
I found this online
Purpose: Estimate or predict the dependent variable based on the independent variables. Understand the nature of the relationship between variables. (OLS)
Identify if the group means are statistically different from each other.(ANOVA)
They're the same thing - from a theoretical view it's like asking if a VW or a Volkswagen is a better car.
Explanation:
For example, an ANOVA could be used to determine whether the difference between different sets of linear regressions were statistically different or not.
A multiple regression looks for correlation within a set of data. ANOVA looks for differences between sets of data.```
Correlation is what I use OLS for. Coefficient of Determination is important in some cases
I'm not gonna argue this one in this room because it's off topic. You can tag me in #data-science-and-ml or read the link I sent you from r/stats. It's all statisticians and they're all reiterating what I said 😅
My point isn't strictly about this method, it's about every bullet you have that is technical, just be ready to elaborate on them. All my technical interviews for DS/ML roles have been like that
Hello everybody. I was wondering if anyone knew good resources to learn how to build AI applications using Python before college?
and OLS gives you that option. You cant find R^2 score in your ANOVA output
you get that using your linear model not your anova output
Just read the comments in the link 😄
I saw that. I mean you can consider ANOVA as an OLS but their outputs are different
some cases you wanna focus more on slopes rather than the means
Is this a good project entry? If not, what can be improved? (For Data Science/Analytics)
Hi guys, I'm actually building a voice assistant using an external esp32s3 microcontroller. I am running it locally on a platform io project. Now I want to transfer it to cloud. I am confused between aws ec2 instance and aws iot core in combination with a lambda function and s3 for storage. Any suggestions?
That's not a career question, move it to #tools-and-devops if you need more help... But I agree, EC2 will be far easier if you don't have a good reason to do serverless
hi guys
Thanks
It's good, not great. A little too many adjectives like 'closely' and 'rigorously': obvious the goal is to predict as accurately as possible. But? How did you validate? Etc. reads a little bit like you had GPT complete the sentences, the excessive thesaurus words.
thanks
@woven apex @sage tree
Here
Hi! You are on the wrong channel as this is not related to #career-advice . See #❓|how-to-get-help
I just wanted to show them smh real quick 🗿
It's best to do it in an appropriate place
Why would you send this in #career-advice ?
Please send it in the general channel, or a help thread.
Have you completed this course?
Analyzed guest satisfaction surveys using regression models with R and Python, incorporating ANOVA for hypothesis testing and K-fold cross-validation for model validation, leading to actionable insights that improved online reviews by 10%
Is this too wordy?
what do you think?
This is perfectly fine.
https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/3974437353 interesting role @safe coral
yeah 😄
apply for it
No. The Harvard CS50 courses are well known and widely recommended and they are free, but I've never done one
oh okay, that's fair.
For those who have been through the interview process for data science, ML, etc, if they asked you to code live, were you guys allowed to use documentation and such? lol
Im still fixing my resume
I got bashed by z today I dont know if I wanna apply for jobs @hearty island
he kinda slammed my professors so and apperantly I would fail interviews
then save the job at least? who's z?
check #data-science-and-ml
bro if you listen to what everything everyone says, you will be paralyzed
Why are some people so toxic here? I dont get it
no one's toxic here.
Technical screenings/interviews vary widely, you'll encounter a range of open/closed approaches.
I shall say some people
we are literally trying to help you
that guy literally grabbed my confidence and trashed into garbage
that's the purpose of this channel lmao
if you let a random internet stranger have that much power over you, how do you expect anything in life to work?
and I cried for like an hour
Are bigger companies more likely to take the close approach?
bro
the opposite. Bigger companies expect you to get a task done, and if you're honest that you need to look up a specific feature for the code you're trying to complete, they'll happily let you.
i'm reading the chat, he was trying to help you.
that wasnt help tho
Better to have that happen when you're preparing so it won't be as harsh in a real interview. Negative feedback is never fun but it's necessary.
I didn't see whatever comments you're referring to,.so I'm not defending them if they were unnecessarily harsh or rude. But you have to expect unpleasant emotions are part of the game
look man. my mentor from the military taught me this. you will never be spoonfed your answers in an academic or work setting. you have to fucking go for it. fuck it we ball mentality.
Ohhh ok tyy
he then refered my project as useless
now Im not even gonna mention that project in my resume which I was so proud of
bc it likely was, dude. zestar knows what he's talking about. he's being honest so you can improve.
The bigger the company, the more public info you can normally find about what to expect.
That project I presented to the whole class? Teacher said it was the best project in the class. I got like 96
maybe it's time to take a break for a bit. go for a walk
i agree with psvm, disregard what i said or come back to it later when you've calmed down a bit. taking a break is good.
I mean whats so shitty about it?
True ty
fam you have time. make another project.
I have other projects too
(the statement in question: #data-science-and-ml message)
zestar acknowledged he was being hard on you, he's trying to make sure you're interview ready.
ohe he also said my grad prof was not good either
so what?
considering the guy did his phd in Carnegie Melon
i see stel typing i'm gonna chill 👀
literally had to remove everything from my resume. Now Im back to 0
Why are you rehashing everything that zestar said?
You didn't like what he said. I don't know what this play-by-play review of the conversation is intended to accomplish.
Instead of helping some people are bashing @peak halo
look you're going to receive critical feedback at your jobs. i had the virtue of having bosses who'd give it to me on a daily basis. he's legitmately trying to help you.
He criticized my resume too
that I dont know what Im doing cuz I put regression models and ANOVA in the same sentence
my bosses were all "hard" on me and it was to improve me
Ive been working for 5 years tho
@safe coral people can read the conversation that you had with zestar if you want. and you can also block zestar if you don't want to talk to him again. Going around in circles about how you felt about that conversation isn't conducive to the kind of environment we want here.
Maybe I dont articulate stuff properly but that doesnt mean I know nothing
stel, when you started your role on the first day, did you sign an I9? or did you sign it before?
pretty sure it was after I signed the offer letter and before my first day.
iirc it just needs to be within 3 days of your first day
ah they are saying they'll send it shortly before my hire date, i start the 29th so
there might have been special rules at the time because of covid.
my undergrad is asking me to come speak to students now regarding careers
i had an internship ~covid times. apparently the requirements for verifying documents or whatever were paused. then about halfway through they were unpaused, so i had to do the form thing
i just don't want anything to slip through the cracks. would it be too much to call the background check vendor like next week?
my parents are advising me to chill
You will pass every background check unless you have a criminal record, basically
I’ve already passed it all
I should just relax
(Image has been censored for privacy reasons) Does this email sound cap to anyone? Although, I do know that the "big bank" is hiring software engineers.
hmmm.
kforce?
That's a recruiter email. Totally normal, to me.
In what way does it seem suspicious to you? (if at all)
Kforce does a lot of staffing projects (contractors), not sure if this is a recruiting (placement) or contract opportunity l
What do you mean? That's a good thing.
No, your resume must’ve got past their ATS screen for the right keywords. Congrats Jiggly, go kill it.
they probably send that to everyone ¯_(ツ)_/¯
potentially true
❤️ logaritham ❤️
The referral bit. Like, are they saying they'll pay you for getting your friends recruited?
Some companies do that. Paying you to advertise ¯_(ツ)_/¯
oh wait wrong chat
That's how (third party and staffing) recruiters work. They get paid to place people, so building their resume database is really important to them.
If Big Bank has relevant positions listed, apply direct and leave these parasites out of it. Sometimes you have no choice and can only apply through recruitment firms, but better to drop the middle-person if you can
Dude, read your emails 😄
holy moly
I only answered one question wrong out of 15 questions
dang, second round incoming then!!
and that was a typo reee
fantastic stuff man
just promise that you won't get crushed if you get rejected for the role. bc shit happens.

do you concur @safe coral
Yes
good shit brother
Posted 9:35:33 PM. At Cardless, we’re building a credit card and loyalty platform that consumer businesses use to…See this and similar jobs on LinkedIn.
it was for this position. SENIOR????????? Im not even senior. Im not sure how I passed the first screening
keep it up, brother.
do i focus more on math or programming in hs
Math. You need good grades in math to get into a CS program.
Depends how good you are at maths already
ok i want to go in cybebrsecurity what all the languages i need to learn
First step. Learn the golden rule. Thou shalt not make changes on Friday. Especially ones involved with Drivers. Or that are untested.
C, C++, others are optional
<@&831776746206265384>
python is generally pretty useful for making scripts as well
knowledge of a shell language/how to use a shell is really good as well (e.g. bash/powershell)
they mean well though, I’m not sure about the broscience comment.
It’s ok man, let it go. You’ve done tremendous things for this channel. Can’t let it get to you.
If they don’t appreciate you, I always will 🙂
Anyone in insurance use python? I heard its used in actuarial analysis, how tough is that to get into?
If you want to be an actuary, there's a lot of exams you normally have to take with whatever regulatory board there is for actuaries in your country. To get to that point, you'll want to do a very math and statistics heavy degree. Some universities also have actuarial specific degrees to look at
My buddy from UHG does
choose bio
What are the options you are choosing between? Anything technical/math related could be relevant.
What you do isn't nearly as important as doing it well! So pick whatever you think you might be interested in, but also don't be afraid to explore something new
First: try to find someone local who would know. Find someone in Uni in your major. Or, maybe contact a local Uni's CS department and ask if they have any informational sessions.
We can suggest things you should learn to prepare for CS, but it's hard to recommend educational paths without knowing your system. For instance, US and UK higher education systems are very different
@plain wing what is your concern regarding your CS degree?
Mann go with biology and do MBBS you'll earn a lot compared to programming

Many bio (and sciences in general) jobs end up involving programming. Also, perhaps compare number of SWE jobs to number of bio and biomed jobs: I don't know numbers offhand, but I suspect it's 10x or greater
Hey so Im doing A levels, boutta do A2 after summer, and my parents keep asking me to do some sort of 'course' where I get a certificate or smth at the end. They dont take CS and I have no idea what they're talking about, but they claim a certificate like that is a free pass to any uni. Are they right and if so do yall have any recommendations for something like this?
Do you have a uni advisor at your school?
are you in the UK?
if so: what kind of unis are you aiming to apply to?
Nope, Im just doing A levels, Im actually canadian and hoping to go to UofT or Uwaterloo for CS
Nope
Generally speaking (I'm in US): strong grades in pre-Uni math are the most important thing
Yeah Im taking maths and physics along with CS
Nice, along with that: extra curriculars: programming and robotics clubs, for instance
I feel like everyday my parents are either trying to give me new suggestions like taking a rando 4th subject like culinary arts just to get a 4th A even tho I explained to them thats not what unis valued, or they're flat out trying to get me out of CS and do pre med. Idk if this is another one of their bad suggestions so I came here to ask just in case
i'm from the UK (so might not apply fully): also agree that maths is very important (you should ideally know a bit more than the courses at your school provides), and on top of that having good programming skills + building stuff will generally imbue you with quite a good skillset in terms of problem solving etc.
As a parent of a soon to be Uni student, I am full of terrible advice for my kids. My parents also gave me terrible advice.
Im doing fine on studies and knowledge gaining, but my parents say the credentials that a 'course' gives are more important than anything else like eztra currics
in my experience (which comes from speaking to admissions people at top UK unis), the certificates and stuff are usually not very useful
I believe they are completely wrong here
my opinion is that they're cash grabs, top unis can distinguish if you're good or not without seeing if you've done one of these courses, and the courses usually suck anyway lol
Im decently well versed in python, SQL, and pseudocode detailed in my course so I think thats kinda ok for a 16 year old but I could be wrong
A course -vs- an extra curr activity that requires human interaction and coordination and commitment?
But how does your school not have an advisor? That sound weird, in US I think every Hs has at least one
Great. Now time to convince the most stubborn parents on the planet that they were wrong about something
We technically have one, its on MS teams, theres no real advisor but theres an account that posts random quotes and announces when the next uni scouts are coming
One way of convincing: certificates don't require much effort and are not accredited.
I tried saying this, and that on online courses everyone cheats so the cert. is worthless, but my mom said theres one harvard course or smth thats supposedly highly regarded by unis
cs50?
CS50p. I'm not in admissions, but I doubt this is 'highly regarded'... -but- there's perhaps little harm in knocking it out rather than fighting it out.
I mean Im not doing standard HS like americans cuz A levels is different, so no AP classes for me. The only thing I do for knowledge these days is youtube and SQL, along with practice
It is a good course tho.
*youtube and leetcode (dont know why I said SQL)
Damn. I love sql.
Lol I do SQL on leetcode
There's also some sql practice sites that are pretty good
Other than leetcode? Can you name a few?
Also let me just sum up my original question rq, is there any online free course I could do that gives me genuine credentials that unis highly value?
Datalemur
i would imagine cs50 is probably one of the better ones you could choose
What do I get for proof at the end of it?
well, nothing for free, but if you pay $219 you get a certificate lol
Damn, anything free that gives me similar certificates?
Dont wanna pony up 219 bucks for a certificate that might be worthless when applying
usually nothing of value will provide a certificate for free, that's the business model :p
again: i think the certificates are mostly useless
if your parents are dead-set on you getting a certificate, is there any way of convincing them to pay for it?
Idk I could try asking but is the online certificate even worth it?
Is it like a real extra curricular?
It's a solid course. But it's highly unlikely to make a difference for getting into uni/college
i don't know the details of canadian uni applications, in the UK i don't think it would be useful (you would get the same value out of doing the course and not getting the certificate)
UofT specifically doesnt value extra curriculars at all for CS
i feel like an extracurricular like tennis is probably different to a course in computer science
this was my experience in applying for cambridge/imperial, neither of which really value extracurriculars either
Whats your advice for applying to unis that dont value extra currics (other than the obvious answer of getting better grades)
i would say there's a distinction between extracurriculars (e.g. tennis) and 'supracurriculars', which are directly related to your course (e.g. programming)
i would say that although grades are important: for top unis it's important to go beyond them, you can get 3A* but still not get in
3 a stars is a given, but outside that what would you recommend to guarantee a spot in a CS course? Should I sign up with one of those uni advisors that 'guarantees your admission to your dream uni'?
Also how would I do a supracurricular and have proof of it?
i haven't used one of those uni advisors, but no one can guarantee admission to your dream uni, probably a scam lol
i don't know how the canadian system works, but in the UK we submit a 'personal statement' (small essay) where you can talk about this kind of stuff, we didn't need to provide proof necessarily
but realistically the best thing these supracurriculars do isn't give you a certificate, it's give you skills/knowledge that help you succeed in interview/admissions tests
HEY guys do you have any advice for me , i am soon entering into my 1st sem in uni as an undergrad in cs , but my uni is not that great , i want to get into an elite uni in aus or us for my post grad in ai nd ml what should i do to increase my chance of getting an admisson there
how's your math?
not bad
but i still trying to put more efforts in my maths
i m pretty good in fast calculations
but i still have more to go in calc
you shouldn't focus on fast calculations, you should focus on mathematical knowledge/intuition
i see , so i have to focus more on my intuition
best way to do that is just to solve lots of hard problems
like what topic should i focus more on
whatever interests you :) if you like doing calculus, do some hard calculus problems, if you like discrete maths, do some discrete maths problems
use prof leonard. 3blue1brown.
@hearty island i see
In the https://discord.com/channels/267624335836053506/366673247892275221 channel there are some pinned messages, there is a math book in there
ok
also it's really important not to just consume videos/books, but to actually do some problems
this is the book i used in my 1st semester calc course, it's got really good info + some really interesting problems littered inbetween it all https://www.astrosen.unam.mx/~aceves/Metodos/ebooks/riley_hobson_bence.pdf
thnx ,an it means a lot for me
but can you give me some advice for my plans which is mentioned above
get good grades, get good at maths, do well in kaggle competitions
umm, actually i am pretty stressed bcz to get into an elite uni abroad i need to stand out a lot and usually from the place in belong we have a very low chance to get admission in a pretigious uni
Why are you concerned with the prestige of the university?
actually, i dont care about the prestige of a uni but i actually want to work hard and see whether i can into a good uni or not
bcz ultimately everything comes under your skills
Hey guys, I am jobless and bored. Looking to talk. I am a software engineer whose main programming language is Python.
that's not really all there is to getting into a "prestigous" university tbh, it doesn't matter too much. as long as your school is accredited and you're going for a CS or related degree you will be fine
Nah not really. Uni is also a lot of fakeness. Its not just your skill which will give you a PhD. But it plays a big role for sure
Please help me fix this part i got insta rejected from dream firm so im trying to fix it up
I feel like the bullet points are not great any advice or suggestions would be great
How insta? Like automatic response?
What's a point 72?
the name of the company
Update: Told my dad as much and got chewed out for not being serious about studies and not wanting to put in work
i'm not saying the course isn't useful tbf, cs50 seems p decent to me for uni applications (although i never did cs50 :p), but the certificate is somewhat useless imo
tell him to schedule a meeting with us, we'll set him straight
especially for building good programming fundamentals
What's the harm in making your parents happy and knocking out the cert? It's a good course, we just think the $$ is pointless, but if they're paying
If I understand the situation correctly, your parents are paying the cs50 cert for you and insist you take it.
In this case, I would focus more on the learning that go with it than the cert. Sure the cert will be useless for your career, but it's still an opportunity to go through some good material, learn or review topics and make some projects.
So in the end, the value you get will be the learning that you will take with you.
(Besides just doing it) The 'better' option is to seek out an advisor whom both you and parents trust. Your parents (probably) don't know how Uni admissions works and neither do you.
I dunno if I should have tweaked my resume at all… I keep getting interviews with the previous one before I had to put all tha part time info and stuff. @hearty island
I guess your resume tactic worked but I don’t know if I should have made the most recent changes
I got 5 interview requests in one day
He dont really care about the knowledge of CS50. Besides if I was doing it for knowledge, I could prolly find a better course than CS50
This is before putting all day part time info and stuff
I passed the technical interview on Cardless with 95
So they bumped me to the next interview
Which course would you consider better than CS50?
Then it comes down to two factors:
- Resolving the conflict around the topic of cert and how useful it will be to admissions in colleges. That implies finding the resources and developing arguments about the best way to get into college
- Disagree and commit. How much energy are you spending in arguing about it instead of just doing it
idk I just havent seen anyone recommending it as a course for purely gaining knowledge vs random courses on yt.
I just wanna make sure that I commit the time and money into something that isnt a waste
CS50 always come up as a recommendation over random yt videos.
Also in terms of learning, you should expect books to be more efficient over random youtube videos
I think the answer here lies with the type of employer/career you want.
From what type of companies do you get the most replies? Recruiters/contract based companies or high tech companies/startups?
CS50 is a series of courses, all of which are highly recommended. They're a bit more structured than random yt videos; it's designed as a course, so treat it that way: watch the videos, read the notes, do the assignments/projects, etc
Ayyyyyy
Keep going man!!
I mean working 4 days a week is kind of full time @turbid bobcat
I worked Mondays, Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays
34
My internship was online. We were given a project and told to be working on it for 3 months
It was 3 of us worked on the internship for a project
As an interviewer, that would not be received well
What do you mean not received well? It counted as an internship
Internships are about discovering the world of the enterprise. That means how teams organize themselves, methodologies, taking things to production, or even what other parts of the comapny do, etc.
As phrased, it sounds more like a paid project than an internship
I dunno I had to go present our findings and everything
Columbia Montour Chamber of Commerce has 10 employees
That's just a final report.
But how integrated with the day to day life of the team were you?
My team was my college friends
Who did the internship with me. I literally worked for chamber of commerce that has 10 employees
Sure, but do you see how it looks from the employer's perspective?
We met weekly about the internship on Fridays with the director
We presented our findings
And did the same every week for 3 months. We had to submit progress report and stuff to the director
Once a week before we meet with him
and do you see how it looks from the employer's perspective?
It counted as a school credit that’s why @turbid bobcat
Yeah it’s an internship. They can look online for the company to see how big it is
I did an internship in my final master's year when I had experience just for the sake of it. I don't think it's weird
No. It looks like a school project
First of all. I worked for chamber of commerce
It’s not a school project? School project doesn’t involve working for companies
This is missing the point.
So I guess I will bow out
But you call it a school project when it’s an internship
Why would I do school project for another company?
I see what you mean. I think my reason was that it was a way into more entireprisey ways of doing things (cloud services and so on).
It was a project for them that required us to meet weekly with director and write reports
And go present it for the school directors of 12 districts and you care calling it a school project?
Because functionally there is no difference between a school project and what you did.
Other candidates will have 100x the value out of their internship comparing to yours
That’s why I have the name of the company there? montour Columbia chamber of commerce
The recruiter can look it up online and see how big it is before proceeding with me
It's not about the size. It's about what you do with it
I told you what I did
Right. And as interviewer I would say thank you and then ignore it as an internship for you, potentially just rejecting the candidate altogether
I think getting tacit knowledge and experience from seniors is the key component of an internship, but if it was one on paper like your course was called "internship project" or similar I don't think it's a misrepresentation
Which seems to be the case
I didn’t even work for a tech company
It literally says in the name of the company for gods sake
Chamber of commerce remote internship. How am I supposed to do day to day stuff there?
When it’s remote
Remote work exist and they have tons of ceremonies and activities
You are thinking of big corporates
no. Even tiny startups
well this company didn’t
that's not the interviewer's problem. They have thousands of other candidates
I met weekly with the director to discuss what’s going on and the wanted my report weekly basis
I understand that and you are completely missing the point here
My college says it’s an internship
So I’m going with what it says on my transcript
The college actually advised me for the internship
Like you are kind of shading
Telling they wouldn’t even hire me? Wtf is wrong with people here
Plus it was during my winter break
I had much more time. By the time I was in my 5th year of college (final semester) I only needed to take 2 classes
I literally went to school once a week
You guys think oh how does this person work while going to school
I’m hardworking. I’m not a lazy person
I only gave you my opinion about how I would interpret it as an interviewer. That can be useful feedback for you to see and understand the other side of the coin
Yeah but that’s before you listen what I say
You told me to put part time as my position when I worked at least 32 hours a week while in school
Because it’s weird I worked full time while in college
I do listen and do understand what you say. I have candidates calling random shit as the best thing since slice bread every day all day long. That's normal and part of the incentives.
How is 32 hours a week is part time while in school?
I literally went to work after my classes
My classes would end up at 1 and I would work 3-11
Because they said it’s weird for someone to work full time and go to college @turbid bobcat
Working multiplt full time jobs is highly sus and could get you rejected on the first pass
What multiple jobs?
Multiple full time jobs count as multiple jobs
That internship was 3 months only
Ok. Multiple full time activities count as multiple full time activities
So you can’t be full time student and full time employee?
no
You live in a parallel universe then. I worked 32 hours a week
I understand that. And in my universe, people do find jobs
No he thinks I can’t work and study full time

It's not just me. 16h per day without counting breaks, sleep, eating, shopping, etc.
So?
do you speak like this irl too?
That sounds unrealistic and miserable
so it's not normal and highly sus
I’ve been doing that all my life. I worked 7 days a week before
I am fully aware and cognizant of that. They also have evening classes too.
But the keyword in your sentence is part time
...I think you might have worked under illegal conditions
The argument here is working 2 full time activities. So 2x8h per day
That’s why I finished college in 5 years read my education. I didn’t finish in 4 years @smoky quest
No one will read it in such details or care
over employment was a meme during the pandemic
I took 3 classes per semester @turbid bobcat
9 credits count as full time
6 counts as part time
3-4
For masters full time is 6 credits
I was talking about undergrad
I mean I’m doing 9 credits for masters
I did 9 for undergrad too
It might be part time actually
My undergrad was 9-12 credits
suggest changes to this pls
That might be why I graduated in 5 years but I got two majors and 2 minors
for us it's 12 hours to be considered FT
I went between 9-12 so that makes me part time? @pine sleet I graduated in 5 years tho
Because I took so many courses
I had too many credits at the end of my 4th year I was no longer eligible for financial aid
i think it depends on the college but yes at mine you would be considered a part time student
shouldn't you have graduated earlier then
I ended up 261 credits @pine sleet
oh
Yup hahaha
Turkey. I had a college degree there too
i would try to make the bullet points shorter in any way you can
BS in Linguistics right?
Yup
I’m not putting that in my resume tho…
Wow
I actually took 4-5 classes per semester @pine sleet
Maybe I worked 24 hours during college? I can’t remember
I graduated a year ago and now full time so 👽
Yeah I changed my job to part time in Marriott already @turbid bobcat
Bachelor of Arts?! That seems wrong…
Was about to say..
data science is an art form /j
I got bachelors of science…
There’s no BA in Data Science tho
And it says my major was Math
my academic title is PhD in Javascript Deobfuscation
Anyway so that should clear it
some, in the types of classes you take
Anyone here from the UK?
also sometimes correlates with the department for your major
BSc will get picked up better by a poorly configured ATS
Always ask your actual question. Don't ask to ask.
🫡 forgive me Sir stelercus
I changed my current position as a part time in Marriott so it doesn’t look suspicious for school and internship
And I checked my schedule it seems I did work 24 hours a week
Fridays Saturdays and Sundays
Always randomly appearing in a conversation + that pfp is unsettling man 😭
So that’s part time 😄
I mean I'm one of the people who runs the server.
I figured 🫲☠️
I passed the technical interview in a job position I applied to @turbid bobcat
You can say "Can any Brits in the chat tell me ..."

Question: Is the barrier to entry for game development relatively low?
A friend of mine whose only been coding for probably a year or two, created an enemy ai for a client who paid him £3000 (He said the client was likely just hella rich), then he supported a small team in the making of a game, and looking at his proficiency/knoweledge in programming he probably sits barely at a Junior position.
The work was via a freelancing discord server btw
the barrier for entry is low but it gets complicated fast especially when working with the newer technologies
Do you mind elaborating on that please
it is very easy to start in game development and make small games. It can even be done in python. But it does get very hard when you need to use other engines like unreal or unity to make complex games that need optimizations and 3d graphics and networking.
Ahh I see
Would you consider it a better use of one's time to become proficient in c++ in comparison to Python considering its more suited to the specific field
It's all relative. Freelancing on small tasks is not the same than making a career in a gamedev studio.
£3000 might also sound a lot, but depending on the number of hours worked on it, the taxes and other costs, it might not actually be that much in the end
if becoming an unreal engine dev is your goal yes
It depends on what parts of the jobs. Gamedev is super broad and cannot be summarized to the core inner working of an engine
My Goal is backend development, I was interested on what the field entailed since me and my friend speak regularly
gamedev as a field does have a reputation of working a lot for lower pay
Wouldn't various factors play a part in determining that? Such as geographical location, company etc
Not really. Every kid wants to work in gamedev.
Not every kid wants to work on accounting software.
One will have trouble finding candidates while the other one will always have a long line of applicants
I'd love to work in accounting software, financial analysis with Python/Java. Could you elaborate on what would generally be the requirements to get into accounting software
A CS degree would be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
I see, thank you for your input recursive
Omg
I got another interview lmao. What the fuck is going on. 6 interviews in two days 🤣
@hearty island bruhhhhhhh
I am so proud of you, see? I fucking told you so.
why is everyone just telling you to email "YES". that's so odd to me. every single email i've got for interviewing has always had some sort of scheduling talk
psvm has a point
I said yes to one of those and they emailed me again for scheduling @true harness

Seems like some sort of automated resume system, probably feeds directly into an OA or other screening tool, before going into main review pipeline.
maybe. the lack of personalization and...general humanness feels weird
i second psvm on this one, normally when recruiters reached out to me it was never reach out to me with an "OK"
it was something like this:
or "Hi Damian,
Thank you for your interest in Nomura. I would like to speak with you regarding your resume and application for the Client Onboarding Analyst role. Could you please send back a few times that would work for you to connect?
Many thanks!
recruiter"
On plus side, even if it's just automation, it means resume is hitting keywords and ATS scanning well.
As others have said a CS degree would probably help
Python would probably be a bad choice for accounting/finance since most mission critical software is developed using languages like cpp/Java/Erlang and in some cases legacy languages
If you’re more interested in the analysis/reporting side def learn a visualization tool like PowerBI/Tableau since those two hold a de facto duopoly in enterprise reporting
Python is bad for accounting and finance? I think you'd be surprised.
Sure, perhaps bad for hft but it's a big industry. I work in fintech.
Not at all, it’s a great tool, it’s just that I’ve never seen Python used for mission critical software
I have colleagues that work at zucchetti (big European accounting/finance cloud vendor) and they mainly work in Java/PHP
It's a big industry that uses all sorts of languages and platforms. Python is a major language in this industry.
Absolutely, I’ve personally written invoicing software using Python at work, it’s just that there’s no way I’d work on scaling that
But OP's question had nothing to do with mission critical and 'scaling'.... regardless, Python is fairly central to many financial analysis workflows. I can cite, but I think it's pretty well established.
In fact, I think Python fluency is (or should be) pretty much required for new grad financial analysts.
Definitely, I probably phrased my comment wrong, Python is a must have, just that it’s even more so for analyst roles
Just my experience tho
In terms of career, it should be noted that students should expect to see multiple languages over the course of their education.
So the specific language at play is a distraction. They can pick that up any time
Can you actually get a job without knowing a programming language or picking it up later ?
Yup, I didn't want to over - react, just wanted to say that for OPs question about financial analysis, I thought Python makes sense as a first language.
You wouldn't get a degree without knowing a language
Where I live you don’t really learn to code in uni
It’s more about data structures, algorithms etc
Which country is that?
I have never heard of a country where you go through years of CS to not see any programming language
If you're asking: can you get a job in, say, c++ if you don't know it? It's hard to predict and depends on supply and demand for that language, I think
Ie: I got hired for a Java job back in the day, but only knew c++, but the market was tight and I had other redeeming qualities.
- Are you looking for hiring a senior engineers who knows the inner working of the JVM and how to tune it and how to train engineers on that? Definitely needs to have that experience
- Are you looking for a backend engineer? Anyone can pickup python/java in a matter of days. That's the easy part. The difficult part is the backend related skills. So it's routine to hire people who have not exclusively worked in the specific stack of the employer
My masters is in high performance computing and data science
While you do “code” you’re not really learning good design patterns
It’s more about the theory, there are coding classes but they’re extracurricular, it’s expected that you learn to actually code at home
I live in Italy btw
Ah yeah. But you do have to write projects and code, right?
'Not really learning good design patterns': yah, that's why we call new grads 'junior engineers'. That's understood, although you can develop your skills independently to stand out
Yea, last one I did was about writing cuda kernels
It’s soooooo jank, professors aren’t really looking for “good” code, they just wanna see if you understand the basics
Most of the course work is related to high level stuff like how the architecture is laid out
Sure. That's normal.
Anyone can pick up git in an afternoon. That's not the most valuable use of the school time to spend hours on git for you.
What's more valuable are the skills which will serve you throughout your 40 years long career.
But in the end, you do write code and you do deliver projects.
As such, languages would not be blockers
Getting involved in OSS is one way to develop your 'engineering' skills, you learn a lot from the project structure, testing and rigor of even medium sized projects. Even if you're just testing or reporting bugs.
languages are like tools. You pick the tool for the job.
Similarly to screwdrivers or hammers. What matters is not that you can use a hammer but the space rocket you can build with these tools
Also to add that the best students are the ones who do learn the theory but also put it in practice. As you are entering the adult life, no one will sit down to give you a grand class on topics anymore.
So do not hesitate to pick up on your own other skills that schools won't teach you
Def, I got a job last year to support myself through uni and I wouldn’t have gotten it if it wasn’t for all the skills I learned on my own
My hiring manager actually told me that most applicants never even heard of unit tests lol
It’s a sort of blessing because you can easily stand out by upskilling yourself since most other students usually just learn the coursework and don’t go further
'Usually just learn the coursework': I wish. Many didn't even do that.
Yea I have a friend that finished her bachelors early by cheating on all the exams
Kinda mad about it but I guess she’s never gonna get into a technical position
Yikes.
python is fantastic for accounting and finance. edit: wrong ping sorry.
none that relate to #career-advice
myb i dont read most of the time lol
We don't do ads here
Like as in the whole server or just this channel?
the whole server
Should I take it down?
that would be nice. Thanks!
Feel free to hang out any time you want to discuss career or advise folks here too!
Does anyone here make softwares?
i imagine most people here do
How'd they came to learn that?
by doing programming
So how, and where should I start from?
If you are in HS or college age, a CS degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
I'm in my last year of college, although I want to start learning skills along with the degree.
what are you studying in college?
Practice makes perfect. One way is to have your own project or double down on the school projects
what do you plan on doing with these skills later on
Become a software pro, open a firm and do business i guess.
you should try and make as many projects from start to finish
so you want to be the inventor face of the business
you should do as many mini projects as you can for 6-12 months then start a bigger project which will help you learn skills for the business plan
Well for that, like I said to start somewhere you need to know what that thing/project requires, and I don't even think I know the basics of programming.
Like I need to know where I should start from to actuate my journey towards my goals.
i thouhgt you were in school for CS?
Schools don't teach much.
schools teach so much.
It's also what you make of it in terms of applying the skills
The skills you need lie somewhere else hidden.
I'll have to wait 5 years in order to become even the least version of my ideal self.
Looking for a way around the back, which will teach me the same things I need to learn with the right guidance in a short period of time.
Huh? You want to drop out?
I just want to fasten the process of acquiring the same knowledge that I can probably learn somewhere else too.
So I'll do my uni in no time.
i'm surprised you say that schools don't teach much tbh,
Can't say much about Universities although college is just about getting you prepared for your exams.
not much more than you can find online
It's exactly like that.
oh i think there's a misunderstanding: does college mean pre-university to you?
why be limited by student loans when you can get the same education for free
far more than you can imagine
maybe for you, but generally no
hey
most likely for you, generally yes
I sure hope it does what I think it means, because if my college is on par with Universities, then it's going to be a hell lot harder.
i know people who have paid $250k over 20-30 years in student loans
can you show me the free online learning resources for denotational semantics
whats up y'all
colleges use free resources..
are you >18? or does college mean the same thing as 'school' for you
Bro you can just serch on yt mosh hamedani
like professors? who will speak directly to you?
he's the best
you think you can't get an online professor or teacher?
I wish I could tell you if I saw what the future holds, although my mindset isn't developed yet to not agree with that statement.
for free? who is a leader in the field?
Learning is an individual journey: transitioning to higher education is about finding your own motivation and purpose to learn. Many people fail to realize their potential in Uni.
there's no point paying for a full college education if you want to learn computer science
Why do you say that?
??? what does this mean
there are cheaper alternatives that teach the same thing
My advice is just think of it as a matter of balance: Uni is one piece of the equation, not the entire equation.
Such as?
I mean it's just about the degree, but real skills aren't meant to be taught at any level, unless you're ambitious enough to look for it.
coding is something that should be self taught in my opinion
It's the opposite. You will face many hurdles on your own. From knowing what to learn, getting access to resources, building a professional network or even demonstrating your skills for jobs
Ah, do you know how much of a CS curriculum is coding?
i'm curious as to why you think this? where are you in your career right now? what's your educational background?
most of it is engineering and programming fundamentals
Not really.
this is a python server
Look at the course curriculum for a CS undergrad degree. You'll find maybe 2-3 actual 'programming' courses, maybe a 4th in software engineering.
Aren't there paid courses that teach the same thing or even more by certified people?
you mean like teachers? In a school?
i think we have mixed contexts
Your question is same as Obscures: I believe you're making a false assumption about what's covered in a CS degree program.
From people who are certified in their CS skills.
How is it different from teachers in school?
it doesn't cost you 6 figures for one
I can assure you that private teachers would probably cost far more
Enlighten my mind and I welcome exposures to new possibilities.
a few thousand at most
I suggest looking at the requirements for a CS degree. Look at the actual courses.
For 4-5 years? People who are at the forefront of the technology?
you won't need a private teacher for 4-5 years
a single CS teacher that will have the same combined knowledge as multiple professors?
I think you should follow BillyBobby advice and look up the curriculum
it's not like i'm talking about MIT, i believe american education is corrupted overall
I don't think it'll take more than a year to learn a whole course of fundamentals of programming.
Are you in academia?
did you go to school for CS?
to be able to apply yourself it will take at least 2
So you are talking about a subset of the first year of a degree. Sure. But that's not equivalent
Do more than one course at the same time maybe.
no
What does that mean?
Intro / fundamentals of programming is just one course in freshman year. About 1/8th of 1 year.
If you are in HS/College age, then a CS degree will be the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
sure, if you can afford it
Take on more than one course of a certified teacher to actively gain more knowledge with less time.
crippling yourself with the debt is not worth the 4 year education you receive
There are ways to cheapen the cost like in state tuition, grants, leveraging community college, or even student loans
did you graduate from a CS degree? or are you working without a degree?
It's an investment. It's up to you if you want to save on 4 years of education and make a starting salary in the 6 digits or just struggle with very low wages throughout your life
i'm going to community college studying business
SWEing is a pretty well paid field. I think the math here is very suspect.
i've been learning programming since very young and did many semester long courses during high school
a portfolio is sometimes more than a degree if you want a job
not really. That's not how it works
really?
no cap
I'll just leave with an appeal to experience: many of us have advanced degrees and have worked in industry. I'm a hiring manager, and have been for a long time. While I do have concerns about higher education, what RE said is spot on: <#career-advice message>
i never said it wasn't good, i just don't think it's worth it in america
heard many many stories of people complaining about their cs education
The market disagree with your take though
🤷♂️
so it comes down to how much you believe your take and whether or not you are willing to bet your remaining life/career on it
I complain about McDonald's, but I still buy their sandwiches.
i'm not personally seeking a tech job so it's not worth as much to me
Sure. If you don't want a tech/swe job, then a CS degree has lower value for you
The reason we're pushing back is: you're dispensing what we (at least I) see as bad advice to people who -are- seeking tech jobs
the only reason i didn't mention a proper education is because he was already in his last year of college and didn't seem to want to go that route
i was a bit bland to begin with
do you think someone that has (admittedly) zero programming experience is in the same boat as you who has been programming from a young age
i didn't learn that way and neither should anyone else that isn't looking for a tech job
what is your point? this person is looking for a tech job
he stated he wanted to do business, which is what i'm also doing.
it's all about what you want to do in the end
Fair, if you want to 'do business', a CS degree is not recommended (unless it's a software business).
tbf, they did say they wanted to start a software business and be a 'software pro'
once again we have mixed contexts
i'm gonna leave it at this because he's not even here anymore so there's no point
I'll welcome good recommendations of courses to start my journey as I am still young, have some other stuff to attend to, so I'll take my leave. And DM if y'all have any ideas to assist me in my journey.
!resources, this should help you champ. I would do the famous Python Harvard course if you wanna get strong fundamentals
The Resources page on our website contains a list of hand-selected learning resources that we regularly recommend to both beginners and experts.
do u think cs will be a saturated job in the future??
i think every job is going to be full of competition in the future.
is there still money in gamedev
game dev is one of the hardest fields out there.
because of competion right?
simply because of the industry culture and pressure as well.
ok, thanks
is it too late if i try starting now this is catu stressing me out
Are you currently in college? High school? There isn’t an “age” to start coding really.
2 years left until i graduate high school
but like do u think com sci is a degree thats too broad??
should i go for amth more specific like data science or ai engineering
data sci/data eng would pigeonhole you imo, but i think others should weigh in. CS is a lot more general and would give you a more "full"view of coding as an entirety.
kinda like if you do cybersec as a degree you wouldn't really end up doing a lot of data science.
what do you think about what i said lisan, do you wanna weigh in?
like i heard that being too general puts u at a disadvantage idk anymore 😭😭
specializing too early might screw you over too
dude my corp is obsessed with it. to the point where my new org is like no we have rules in place.
wrong spot, man.
do u think 2 years is enough for me to figure out which specific field in com sci i should specialize??
at first i was thinking i should do cs for my bachelors and smth more specific for my masters, but someboyd told me degrees are useless for com sci related??
k
i'd have picked a minor in finance/accounting and a major in biz analytics. love financial statements and DCFs and shit.
degrees are useless, huh. guess we're all wrong then 💀. on a more serious note, degrees are your least path of resistance.
i thought so too 😭😭
what about the people who say thta portfolio matters more than a degree. is that true
why am i getting pithink'd
a college degree simply put imo teaches you how to learn.
ohh thats a relief thank you so much
what if u dont know if u have a passion for coding yet. is it bad to go for com sci simply bc u like math nad com sci is the only practical math degree youd be willing to do???
you are trying to enter CS without a passion for coding? that's gonna be.... interesting.
you know you can just try coding, right?
based on ur answer im screwed over 😭😭
no, you're not, just trying to figure you out.
i just finished my igcses so im trying 😭😭
you in the UK @obtuse root?
noo im not but i still do igcse
ah, i don't have a background in that. i'm in the US.
i agree with this. i bombed out for a year of college taking CS and figured a pure CS degree wasn't for me. but business analytics? hell yea.
i discovered i love finance and accounting too during my courses in my major
Jamie Dimon: It almost doesn't matter to tell you the truth because you're looking for smart, ethical, decent people, but I do think in business you should learn the language of business, which is accounting and learn a little basic business.
finance, accounting, micro and macro econ came a lot easier to me as opposed to something like a coding project
but if i never took CS i never would've never been exposed to this server.
thank you guys for these insights 😭😭 couldnt get it anywhere else
there are a lot of CS people who graduated a year ago than me that don't have a job because CS wasn't really their strongest field. but they gritted their teeth and did it anyways for hopes of that sweet green.
anyone got some freelance jobs/servers ?, need around 180$ in 24 hours .
anywhere i can find help?
fiverr, potentially?
wont work for new user
hell, there are people who graduated a year or two earlier than me who are still searching.
i got a job
thats scary 😭😭
what do u do for a job as a physics major tho
i need some urgently
get a loan
true, but not a single internship to their name either? doesn't really show initiative on their part.
dont want to get into that shit
like i dont want anyone to think m going through a hard time or smth
that's two pithinks in a day.
meaning?
ask a friend then ¯_(ツ)_/¯
ngl as someone in charge of hiring new grads i would much rather see good projects than an internship
i had to interview replacements for my role. if i see a resume with nothing on it, there's not much i can do.
why? (and of course, people with internships can have projects also)
your projects are fucking sick, from what i've seen.
i think projects demonstrate a lot better what a candidate is really interested in and good at, and can showcase their skills to top potential
i feel like in internships a lot of time is wasted, there's not much stuff that you can actually end up discussing in interview
i definitely feel like my time was wasted during a significant chunk of my 6 internships.
yeah dawg you did 6 internships ofc yo uwasting your time
lol. distinguished me from everyone else at my school, tho.
no offense lol, but having like 6 internships doesn't really different from having 1 or 2 imo
no man, none taken. it's sad i had to do so many. i was over-compensating for the quality of my school.
but if you built some cool compiler tooling, game engine, dbms, etc. that would make you stand out more imo
not my field or what i wanna do.
maybe. but internships also give you access to things that you can't really get on your own, like working on some large scale project. there might be less individual impact, but i think that experience is valuable
internships gave me soft skills or augmented them.
yeah for sure, i feel like for a good hire this stuff should be super teachable quickly anyway
idk a lot of my interviews were revolving around my internships. they gave me a ton to talk about. keep in mind i got 2 CJOs and 2 actual offers.
possibly a third if i wanted from Nomura.
they were excellent tools in my arsenal to leverage.
i feel like you will have gone through a v different experience though, given you're not going into sweng/even a programming related job
true, i'm more finance-oriented.
of course building an optimising compiler isn't useful if you're applying to be a landscape artist, right
i still think what i did in college does help people on this server, however. getting practical exp has been highlighted by every recruiter i've ever talked to.
i think internships have diminishing marginal utility though
depends, i mean i switched it up. from doing them at startups, to mid sizes, to a fortune 500. allowed me to be exposed to multiple environments.
How long were your 6 internships for each?
someone help me
when i want open "main.py" this script i see only for 1 sec black screen in commands and its close
#python-discussion please, also you need to run it from a terminal with python main.py
recruiting for what type of job though
most recent? 3 months. before that, 5 months. before that, 2 months. before that, 4 months. before that, 10 months. before that, 1 month.
come private message pls
no, please go to #python-discussion
i extended my job scope rather wide and focused on roles with the word "analyst" in them on LI.
I would have thought that a company would offer you a job from the internship?
they did in september, man the offer was like $50K. i declined. i ended up getting an offer this july for $80K.
fair
yea.
no one help in python discussion lol
i did start up -> mid size -> (same) fortune 500 -> mid size -> (same) fortune 500 -> (same) fortune 500
You asked a question and didn't even wait a minute for an answer, be patient
ah nice, good experience
same mid size took me back as well, CEO took me to dinner and wanted to hire me full time and i was down till he told me the salary and my jaw dropped and in my head i was like fuck i am cooked.... can't pay off student loans with that
did you manage to negotiate anything?
for my curr offer?
for this
no, he wouldn't listen to me really. he was like you're lucky in this job market to get something.
it was a mid size insurance firm on LI, he was pocketing a sweet $180k i believe.
he had years of industry exp tho.
no, he just wouldn't budge.
hey
i pretty much decided to go for DS degree. Even though my wish is to become a SWE. i think i would be able to manage time and develop SWE skills along with this degree.
i dont know actually what does it mean to be DataScientist i hope i will be fine getting a SWE role with this degree
Any advice for me? I'm thinking about rejecting a part time contract position in data science to focus on grad school + projects. I want to get into data engineering, MLE, or SWE.
if you wanna do SWE, why choose data sci?
why are you doing a DS degree if you want to be a SWE and don't know what DS is
i am looking for online mode.. I cant find any good CS degree online in india
this DS degree was the best i could find which had placements too
some impacts would be nice. check this out: https://careerlaunch.mays.tamu.edu/blog/2020/02/17/get-hired-with-an-x-y-z-resume/#:~:text=The X-Y-Z format&text=Google touts the X-Y-Z resume, heart of an applicant's achievements.
thier syllabus also teaches cs stuff like dsa, software engineering.
Is it possible to create impacts with only research experience?
well, did your research have tangible impacts?
nope
drug interaction vs cancer stem cell count
Data fitting: gradient descent for parameter search on the gompertz function + euler's/runge-kutta on some diffeqs. HER2 blockers on generic CSC count. No publication.
The part time job is with my states goverment to do workforce analytics but its part time and the pay is trash
I have an offer but I'm thinking about rejecting it
Ah. They were both REUs.
$20/hr, max 20hrs a week.
I would also have to go LDR with my girlfriend which is what is currently stopping me unless its a huge career boost
I'm going to grad school next semester but I have applied for FT positions as well
$400/week isn't livable anywhere in the US
Rent for an ok single bedroom apartment is ~1100-1300
I'm tempted to wait for a FT position. Do you think its possible to get a targeted internship in fall/spring + summer without anything else on my resume besides a few projects?
I think I'm also torn on the probability of landing a fall/spring internship that would be more beenficial to me
I'm happier living overseas
I'm a US citizen but I live overseas because I hate the city I went to school in.
Yes, back to the city I went to school in
They told me that it was in-person during the first phone screen but I can try
what do you need to get a job ?? only a degree can't be enough
practical experience?? like w jobs??
ohh icic do u do internships remotely orr?? how do u find an internship
ohh icic thanks so much !!
say i manage to finish cs50P what should i do next
What stage of education are you currently in? Still in school? Busy with university degree? Something else?
make projects about stuff you like
maybe learn a library that interests you , like flask / django
2 years until i graduate highschool
whats a library
what if i dont know what to code 😭😭
sometimes my creativity is non existent 😞😞
i thought you had finished cs50p ?
that course should teach you coding in python (not to an advanced level , but to a good level )
Then I'd say just start doing some random projects that interest you. Make a small game, build a small website, do something in robotics. Now is the perfect time to just explore everything and figure out what you enjoy more
If you've completed cs50p and don't know how to code it sounds like you just watched the videos without doing any of the excercises or understanding what you were watching
not yett but ill start grinding it after this vacation
then focus on finishing that first , dont think of specifics which concern step no 6 when you havent even climbed step 1
ohh when its a project, we dont have to invent something completely new rightt
wait but what about cs50x, would i have to do that before cs50p??
i am not familiar with the syllabus of both , so i cant say
you should check the prerequisite of those courses
the x is intro to com sci in general while the p is intro to python
i mean i guess u can take both as a complete beginner
They're not prerequisites of each other. cs50x has more of a focus on an introduction to computer science, cs50p is an introduction on just python
i keep planning stuff to do but cant get nth done 💀💀💀
I'd suggest starting with cs50x since you cover the basics of a few languages, sql, algorithms, etc.
then start with x , after you finish that , do p
icic ill do that
Agree with above. If you're an absolute beginner, either X or P are good... but, P is a more typical intro programming course for a beginner college student
ohh i see. thanks!!
If I get a masters in Applied Statistics and my goal is to work in ML, should I still pursue an MS in ML?
I am being pretty vague but basically it's way easier to do an MS in applied statistics for me
Should you do two Master's degrees? No, definitely not. I would imagine getting hired as an ML engineer with an MS in Applied Statistics is not that unusual, but you could search people in your local area via LinkedIn etc. to confirm this
thanks
could anyone please differentiate between (if, elif and else) in python and how to use them please reply
this is wrong channel for such questions , use #python-discussion or #1035199133436354600
oh sorry

could u please help
hello, has anyone done TA work for CS courses here? I'd like to ask some questions in dms if anyone is comfortable with it
what are good cybersecurity tests i can take online that give me certifications
I think you can technically do any CompTIA cert exams online, but better to go to a testing center if you can
Most other security-related certs with any value require professional experience.
That's not counting online degree programs like WGU
ok, thank you
Whats the best masters degree for swe
Any 'best' question always begs the answer: 'it depends'

Maybe tell us more about you/what you want?
Im abt to be done w my undergrad in a yr or so and im planning to do my masters in something swe related so i can get a good job hopefully
What's your undergrad major
I don't dm, just ask here
We don't allow recruiting here, but you could try Fiverr
oh ok srry
All good, it's just too hard to moderate
whyi cant open python files when i open isee only in 1 sec black screen
How are you opening the files
It seems like you are running the program
That's not a career question, try #python-discussion or #editors-ides

Hi, so I start applying for colleges very soon (for CS), and while I have a decent selection of schools I'd like to apply to, a lot (maybe the majority) are reaches/high targets, and so I'd like some insight or suggestions of some schools that are fairly low reach in terms of difficulty, but still offer decent CS programs and job prospects post graduation. I know suggestions will vary depending on my stats - I go to school in a very competitive district, so while I have good grades, academics isn't going to be a defining point of my application, but I'm fairly confident I can get a 1500 on the SAT before I finalize my applications, and I have decent ECs.
for some more context, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, and similarly ranked unis are feasible targets for me.
I'm thinking maybe NCSU, but I'm not sure.
I also looked at Rose Hulman, but I wasn't a huge fan of the location.
I could also CC/George Mason for a year or so and then transfer to, like, UVA if I don't get accepted to any of my targets.
what state are you in?
Virginia
VTech for the past few years has been almost unreasonably competitive 🥴 so it's not a sure thing if I'll get accepted there either
It doesn't hurt to apply. In the worst case, you can always go to George Mason like you said for a year and then transfer to VTech. It's not impossible.
yeah I'll apply regardless, but it's still pretty worrying
You're going to ultimately want to find your way to VTech. CS Programs don't really mean a lot in terms of CS education, however, when it comes to employment, companies do target specific schools.
although my school is apparently a feeder for tech, so that might help my chances (or hurt them, because more competition 😔)
I see
probably 90% of your school is applying to VTech then lol
lol, yeah I wouldn't be surprised
Man. Just got off a screening test with a credit card company. I figured out the trick on that last question too late and didn't have enough time to finish it. I got it submitted, with only 20/300 tests working.
How UMD in terms of reach? Nearby and with a good CS program
What was the question?
I'm going to apply there, yeah 👀 it's a reach, though.
Try reading this and give your thoughts in one of the off-topic channels. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_is_there_anything_at_all%3F
"Why is there anything at all?" or "why is there something rather than nothing?" is a question about the reason for basic existence which has been raised or commented on by a range of philosophers and physicists, including Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Martin Heidegger, who called it "the fundamental question of metaphysics".
Sir Stelercus what exactly does this have to do with career discussion 🫡
It doesn't. I told them to resume in an off-topic channel.
Lmao
All good?
Yesss how's you're day been 🙂
Nah because u purposely refused to answer that question 🫲☠️
Aw you can't use a word like resume in careers discussion
This is not what I intended to happen when I redirected f1lukaas to off-topic. Please stop commenting on all this.

Mb ill delete my message

“Web3” is a super common scam that tries to steal your money by getting you to “invest” in something that doesn’t exist
Hi, this server doesn't allow recruitment or being recruited, kindly delete your message
I'd consider adding RIT - co-op program, not too hard to get into, and it's pricey but if you get a decent SAT score you probably have a good shot at a scholarship (they gave me one)
I see 👀 that did come up, I'll look more into it.
you're there for CS?
how do you like it?
nah i ended up choosing a different school, but im a rising freshman so wouldn't know anyways 😅
seems like the main downside would be the weather :P
ah, I see.
lol, is it rainy?
cold is fine
i think that area gets very cold in the winter, but if you're fine w cold it should be fine!
great lol
in general, the "success" of a student is more correlated with personal motivation and skills rather than the ranking of the school. but that isn't to say there are not benefits with going to a more prestigious school. that said, drexel is great, albeit expensive 👍
I told my kids anywhere but upstate New York (for the weather)
I see, I'll look into that 👀
a certain geek with mod powers went there
I suppose I can always go to CMU for my masters 😌
I figure if I need to visit them, I might as well get some good weather out of the bargain 🙂
lmao
I'd much rather be cold than hot
You'll likely also have a 4+1 option at undergrad school, so that may influence
oh? 👀
I think I know someone who's doing that, actually
they go to georgia tech, and had so many AP credits accepted that apparently they started out equivalent to a junior? and then decided to get their masters done early as well.
Even without that: schools that do a 4+1 typically will let you take grad classes senior year, and apply them towards both undergrad and masters.
I did.
I see
Not recommended for a PhD (part of why I didn't finish mine)
Don't they pay you? Or rather, you work as part of you PhD. Being a TA or RA?
you know, I've got a great uncle I've never met that apparently came to the U.S and just got a masters from like three different ivies
you get a stipend, don't you?
but it's not typically a lot, I'd imagine
I was working full time, had my career/etc.
doing research sounds fun, but doing a PhD also seems like kind of a pain.
From research I did and people I talked to, it was enough to live and not need to take on debt. But nothing "fancy"
the general advice is that if you can live without a phd, you should not try for one
you should
I see
lol are you automatically pinged whenever someone mentions cmu
I get referrals
But it all depends on the school and program. Some are more just "here is money" and some are "here is money on conditions (like work as a TA)" Most are the TA route. But if you can apply for special money from various routes, that is preferred.
Yah, I met a lot of 'abd'-ers (all but dissertation) in the workforce.
as a "fun" anecdote, i had a prof that was a 5th year phd student. they were being paid 15 an hour to teach a course, and needed a separate job at walmart to live
aw rip
there were numerous strikes of the TAs and RAs because they weren't being paid a lot (which they really weren't, i made the same amount at chipotle 🥴)
How to start projects in python
It's one of those questions that tricks you into thinking you have to go through a list in like O(n^2) time with how the question is written.
RIT Is a pretty good school, just be aware the CS program is highly competitive, the SWE as a result can be easier to get into
during the fall it's beatiful and chill but during winter it gets Freezing, however the dorms do tend to have really good Heaters, i'd also consider housing costs, you're forced to live in the dorms during you first year, and the housing is expensive, and since you're living on campus you're also forced to buy a meal plan, and insurance
one of the major downsides for a lot of students is that in the winter, the dorms and the college buildings are a bit far (not really, like 10 mins walking) and in the winter it sucks walking to and from the dorms, but there's a cool underground system that gets you pretty close to the colleges and saves you that pain, if you have any questions about RIT i can answer them 😛
it has one of the best co - ops program in the country, which makes it just as good as any fancy college tbh and for CS / SWE /engineering they have top of the line computers and a lot of support
cybersecurity even gets these beauties 😛
that's better than all the jobs I have seen
the breakout rooms are awesome, three letter agencies send their people to recruit students out of the cyber range (the rooms you see there)
I can see why. Sounds awesome
me and my buddies used to chill and plug in our PS's and had LAN parties there, fun stuff
if anyone asks, i didn't say that
I see, you went there?
thanks for the advice, it's on my apply list now 👀
hopefully I get some sort of scholarship or whatever, but I'll worry about that if I get in
oh what that's sick
i was there for a semester or two and left for family reasons, i'll be heading back next semester or so
I see 👀
don't get distracted. CMU first
gotta love the schools that pump out skiddies left and right

if you think RIT is one of those, i got a bridge to sell to you
I don't purchase things from sales assholes
<@&831776746206265384> troll
... what?
an apple sales asshole tried to sell me a macbook
since we have a "business account", we have our own dedicated sales assholes
they call us peddling the latest trash, and they just read off their memorized script, it's pathetic
@tepid forum all of this is off topic, but your earlier statements come off as rude and are unnecessary, please re-review our #code-of-conduct if you have to

don't act like a nerd
Just been feeling restless over past week. Such a pain in the arse waiting for fucking interviews. Im essentially at the final stages of two apprenticeships and confirmed to have an interview but Ive not been given any dates. Should I wait a week and then email the companies whats going on?
A week is probably appropriate. In the meantime you can keep applying
it's my last week at my old employer. they're slowly weaning me off tasks and having the other intern do my work
the deadlines for apprenticeships is passed now. cant apply to anymore apprenticeships now. waiting for essentially 6 companies to get back to me
what country is this? UK?
yes. applied to an apprenticeship with BT and another apprenticeship with an engineering company
best of luck. here in the US you're allowed to apply to as many internships as you want essentially.
i applied somewhat late for the apprenticeships. thats why i cant apply to anymore apprenticeships at this moment in time. in about 1.5-2 months time is when i should be starting
hello
Small question. I currently work at a company that does consulting. How would I indicate on my CV who the client I was located at was? It's probably not relevant to most applications, but the client I work with is a bank and I do believe that would have some worth in mentioning somehow if I were to apply to a position at a bank
Would I indicate it somehow in the first bullet point? Or would I include it in the company name somehow? For example:
<Company> (Client <Bank name>)
Depends. Did you work with other clients? Or just the one?
In short though, there is no perfect way to do this.
I've only been with the one client
This is what I did to indicate different clients I have worked with. Not to say you should copy. But this just an idea to think about
In that case, yea, the $COMPANY (Client $BANK) is fine. Not perfect. But I think it should be fine.
Did you end up landing a role from the interviews you did?
I should’ve networked some more, but my undergrad alum were stingy with responding
Just need to sign the offer. But yes. (the guy who has the offer is traveling right now so we will see how many days. But it is days, not weeks)
Fantastic stuff, man!!
Thank you ❤️
It is going to be a big move. But it should be a great company to work for
yea my company is in a totally different sector. Going to be exposed to a whole new world.
Yea. Going from suburbs to big city. Very different. And hours away by plane. Could be good. Or maybe not ... (should be good I hope)
I’ve been in the healthcare sector the entire time, now I’ve jumped into finance
Nice. I was mostly doing my own thing. Freelance type stuff. And now I am also getting into finance. FinTech!
Yaaaaaa!! I’m working for a firm that regulates other firms
In fintech here too 🙂
I'm like 10% fin and 90% tech, but same
I have zero background or particular interest in finance but my first dev job happens to be on a platform for banks. Seems like just a huge space for Python
Has everything banking adjacent just been renamed to "FinTech"? Not a question in bad faith, genuinely curious
Basically yeah. Or payment processing or anything financial
Then I was in FinTech in 2018 😅
I guess it was more accounting related? I was in large $ServiceCompany that does payroll stuff for many companies. I was making something for them to understand their cost as well as (financial) performance relative to their competitors in the sector
Yeah, that would generally fit.
I'm going to a fintech conference next month and Intuit is presenting... I definitely associate them more with accounting than banking
This kind of shows how broad it is. There are some on the list that have "fintech" as the "type of company" but there are all kinds of more specific things included. https://courses.cfte.education/ranking-of-largest-fintech-companies/
Oh, I've gotten the feedback from the recruiter that interviewed me this... last friday, I believe.
Apparently, they decided to move with another, internal candidate and that my profile didn't quite match what they were looking for.
happens, mate. keep going though!
Which is... fine, I suppose.
People have told that the positive to take away is that I now have a better feeling and and practice of how true interviews generally go. And well, there's definitely that silver lining; I've gotten a good grasp of how my strength and weakness now, and looking back, I could've definitely worked my oratory and answers better. Oh, well. Hindisight's 20/20.
That said, I feel like an idiot for even worrying so much about this, and spend three days overthinking about it.
I feel like calling it a waste of time, but not quite.
Onto the next one.
the overthinking happens to everyone, really. it's kind of human nature to care a lot and analyze everything you did to find faults. just need to use it to improve instead of wallowing and coping, seething, or malding
Hey guys, can you give me some ideas of projets for data science and A.I that i could put on my github?
go exercise, go do a hobby. anything.
I have a trip to the bank today 🥴 So hey there's something for me to do.
gotcha
Apparently I got caught in their backend fuckup and I have to go there and unscrew my account
Why they couldn't fix it themselves, I do not know.
Probably not the best plc to ask but should i primarily use my gaming laptop or my old macbook for projects , learning etc down the line for when ill hopefully get close to getting a good job
Basically , im asking if ill need the beefy power for making some higher lvl projects or maybe for something else , or if ill just be fine using a 7 yr old macbook
unless you are doing something in AI/ML or smth similar , you dont need a much powerful laptop , you just need lots of ram and any modern day CPU
My comanpy has virtualized compute available for devs. I would think any serious AI/ML company would do something similar instead of just giving everyone an expensive PC.
