How to Get Ahead of 99% of Software Engineers 🔥
https://youtube.com/shorts/o-V3jXEI944?feature=share
That is enitrely dependent on how the Chihuahua is treated during their formative years.
!rule 6
Most people tend to approach Chihuahua's trying to pet them, what they forget is that to a Chihuahua you are a 2 meter Titan that can do harm.
and so, they impose their love on a Chihuahua withour regard for its fears, so nasty habits tend to develop in a Chihuahua from a young age that they never un-learn.
If that is the case. Then it's best for the Chihuahua to thread with caution. But it don't, it maws at my hands
No, nothing that extreme (usually) what normally happens is it will shrink back and put its tail between its legs.
The best thing for you to do when meeting a new Chihuahua (After asking the owner if you can pet it ofc) is to show the Chihuahua your palm and "invite" them over.
I still feel the distinct pain of being repeatedly bitten just by thinking about this subject >.>
Sorry you had to experience that, mate. Chihuahua's are NOT for inexperienced dog owners.
Wasn't mine, he didn't bit the owner but bit everyone else
Probably a traumatized rescue.
Chihuahua's defense mechanisms are VERY early developed and happen for VERY specific reasons.
Though, now that I think about it. . . Maybe an English Charles Spaniel first. . . I wanted two dogs, a Spaniel to honor my late dog, and a Chihuahua. Anyway, careers. . .
can you guys point me to a site besides Linkedin, Indeed and Ziprecruiter? I feel as though these three are loaded with fake jobs and I'd like to at least apply to something today.
I've just been googling the job title, I can't stand even opening LinkedIn. I opened it today just to check a quick info and quickly got upset at the first spam post I saw and closed it right away.
God I can't stand Linkedin. . . .
I think applying with the company website is better too, less tracking and all that shady stuff all social media does
damn man there is so much competition and then there is AI
ai is not your competition at the moment its pretty dumb
people who know how to use ai effectively will be your competition though
I am getting real low pay internships from broken ass startups
you don't have to accept
you're allowed to decline internship offers from companies which you think won't be beneficial for your career
and I got rejected after giving a perfect interview today
how do you know it was perfect?
the interviewer said it himself
but i was some experience behind the other guy
what do u do man ?
wdym
that statement is confusing. If it was perfect, then the expected outcome would be to proceed forward
i gave all the answers to their coding questions
that doesn't automatically make you the best fit
anybody can give answers to any coding question
The dude just wanted to hire someone with more experience thats all
well no point getting hung up over it
pick yourself up and move on, keep building up your skills
Have you confirmed these were the expected answers?
the interviewer said himself they were correct
also interviews aren't really tests
then all else being equal, if your answers were the expected ones, then something else might have been amiss
you getting the correct answer doesn't necessarily make you a good fit
i already told u they found a more experience guy at the same price thats all
have you confirmed that?
they said in the rejection letter or whaterver the f it is
man I dont wanna talk about it anymore can we change the topic
they often are bs explanation.
They could have found a better intern, they could have rejected you because of some answers, your attitude, etc.
Wait, why not ? Cuz if you on the interview it means they liked your resume and if you answered everything right it means it was legit
It's not a school exam.
Another candidate may have given better answers, had a better interaction, had better 👏 demonstrated 👏 skills 👏
I am learning something new its called golang
That's way different than not being a good fit, that's just another candidate ranking higher
I have noticed golang have demand and lesser supply in the indian market
usually there are 1000+ applicants on mern
I go as far as saying that if you ask me a bunch of questions, I ace them all, and you conclude I'm not a fit then you just kinda didn't ask the correct questions and decided on potentially very random criteria.
indian startups are completely different
wdym ?
they offer very very little pay make you do the work for multiple people and if you in between arent able to do something they start thinkg to terminate you
ah not sure how different it is from all other startups
my boss used to call me at 10pm and expected me to work till 12pm
it's pretty well known you're expected to "wear different hats" in startups because of the setup
ah that's not cool, aren't there laws against that kind of stuff
nah not in india idk
I see, maybe try to find remote
and you dont get paid for overtime
There is more to most jobs than having all the answers.
Just because you don't know what criteria they were using, doesn't mean the criteria were random.
I'm not sure if that's even ethical.
Deciding on some secret criteria that you don't tell anyone.
So what "electronic research" are you doing ?
Superconducting digital electronics. Fun stuff
what sorta job would be the best for python coding?
You're not entitled to a job just because you are super smart or knowledgeable.
Wtv you're passionate about. The objective is to be doing something you'd do for free cuz you like it
but idk the different jobs u could have so idk what one i would do for free
That's not even close to what I said. I'm saying it makes no logical sense to bring a candidate in, him excelling at the process that you setup, and then concluding that the candidate is not a good fit.
It's fine if you say this other person was a better fit, but otherwise, at some point, you're just deciding based on a purely subjective feeling.
what job do you want to do?
excelling at the process that you setup
you assume?
Hi wat you talking abt
I love how this test just answers the question for you instead of, you know, letting you answer them.
Yes that is the assumption.
I mean, not being moved forward is an indication (although not decisive) that the candidate didn't excel at the process
Where did u get that
Yeah but in this context the candidate was told it was perfect
An application for an analyst position. Why?
I just wanted to know
Here @white relic
Plus am still in college and still thinking of which job to go for before l transfer into a four year
...Yeah, I'm dropping this application. It answers my questions for me.
I fail to see why you would want such a screening test if you're not allowing applicants to elaborate their own answers.
🤨 What?
What a terrible list of choices. Who the heck wrote that.
If many people are using it or create a better one
But if u like l said l will look for one that works for the questioning part better if u don’t mind
Written like a regular engineer instead of a coding machine
11 of 57
i admire your patience
I'm finding this so amusing
Wow, keep them coming
I choose 4
this is like those "college safety" questionnaires where there's only one good answer
Omg definitely 3 for all my prev companies
Are they trying to figure out how to run a company from a Junior? And I suppose whoever is unemployed has a job for the sake of the questionnaire
personal conflicts 😈
"What is the most common reason behind your conflicts with other teams"
"I have personal conflicts with other teams"
What are process conflicts ?
I suppose they mean development guidelines ¯_(ツ)_/¯
'I am the danger'
??????????????????????????????????????????????
There's no "None" option
I must have fired someone as a measly intern
What are these questions for, this is pretty confusing
Wow, that's. What.
It's a screening test for a Python analyst position
What they're screening for, I don't know
But I'm having a laugh at it
That's even more confusing. Why is a python analyst assumed to have fired someone
That's such a bizarre question. Even managers in most places don't 'fire' people, that's left for higher level mgmt.
Well, ig I'd say Junior cuz I've quit a couple times to change companies, so I fired myself ?
Great thinking
Maybe it's a 5d questionare
Am I actually applying for a Python analyst position?
Wait till the behavioral section: https://youtu.be/cIFMwObyst4?feature=shared
I've actually technically hired myself so I could answer junior/mid
But also, that's definitely the wrong questionare
Finished it
This was the funniest and most baffling test that I've ever taken for a job, full stop
I feel like I'd come out laughing out of the interview room if it was irl
Oh my God...
Okay. Enough for me, I'm dropping it - I'M NOT having them spy on my browser during a test.
No screenshots?
In communication, There is the Overworld (What people say) , the Other World (What people mean) and the under world (What people are thinking and intentions they REALLY hold even as they say something that contradicts it.)
what job is this for, it seems scummy
Like who wouldn't just grab their phone?
Or invite a friend over?
This is incentivizing the wrong things
Can I block this company on LinkedIn?
You could send them a rejection notice 🙂
The online assessments I've had they kinda just let you google and use the time constraint to discourage too much leaning on external sources
Naming the company is okay?
Cause I definitely want to name and shame this
They're located in Silicon Valley AND have 'bout 1k employees
I'm definitely curious
Seems okay with the rules
The best interviews I had were for SV companies ngl, they sometimes even pay you for the time
What a wild ride
Sudden Portuguese, r u PT or BR ?
BR is always more likely, you guys are way more numerous, PT is very small
💪 203 million and counting
Well, I guess this concludes job hunting for today
I'm through with the weird offers
They start with this thing even before me seeing the job posting
screw empty arrays I guess
I'm sure if it were rust, the compiler would bully me about it
hello
so im about to study software engineering but it kinda scares me. should i choose something else?
no
Degree programs are build to educate you from the ground up (well, assuming a high-school level of knowledge preexisting)
I don't wanna scare you, but you will face scarier things in life >.>
Right. Thank you guys
in my 2 years of jobseeking, i have never yet met one human
its far too automated
dont meet enough keywords? send out that rejection email baby
That don't sound right, what's the context
I ... I feel like at a certain point it becomes a you problem. Like yea, there is some truth in these words. But only some. Were you actively seeking for 2 years? Or more like on and off? Maybe you should have your application materials reviewed.
Maybe the jobs you're applying for don't necessarily match your experience
2 years and you haven't met a single human? something's off. can you post an anonymized version of your resume?
What's gotten me through scary moments in life is thinking of all the people who've done it before me. To channel the fresh prince; if you can't beat the fear, do it scared.
I jumped out of airplanes with that attitude. I might not be the bravest but Im not going to quit before these fools.
What kind of dev jumps out of planes?
Did you write code for the plane and they said "I hope you trust it with your life, because you're trying it", and then you hit bugs?
Hey, nobody got around to writing the landing software
stop discussing jobs and start talking about this
uh, read the channel's title.
You guys told me that I needed to keep working on projects before anyone would give me a job. I have continued working. btw.
👍
watermeowlon
reminds me, i need to get back on my projects grind.
we not letting go of the tortilla
Me next!
Way to go. I continue doing it even with having job.
Because... you never know when u will need them to get next job after that 😅 nothing is forever after all
And good projects take bloody a lot of time. 🙈
currently working on project that i think already consumed a month of my effort (if to count only spent weekends towards it, hard to say exactly 🤔 )
Tbh, probably biggest pet project i worked upon
Hehe, and still need a week or more to get minimal working product. Sigh But at least getting closer.
Also doing pet projects even if u have a job is a good way to learn skills outside of tech stack present at job ^_^
It can be frustrating to work only with tech stack at work, pet projects help to vent all the desire towards other stuff and find if u really like this other stuff at practice
i get kinda torn between projects and applications.
that might just be a time management thing.
I maked my discord bot and it's not replying in server. I made 2 commands and 1 trigger, trigger is working but commands not and trigger was working on dm only
hey, try #discord-bots.
any tips for gettin an internship in da next 2 months? lol pls help
working on my portfolio site rn, i have robotics research under my belt that im wrapping up, applied to hella places at a career fair last fall and only a few got back to reject me
do i legit have to work at mcdonalds this summer as a cs major : d ?
im sophmore undergrad but my goal is to get a internship n grad early
resume? can you post an anonymized version here?
should i continue learning advanced programming myself now or leave it to college (1 more year in school)? also is it advisable to use programming to freelance without a degree? i need to ask because then i might do something else in the meantime i graduate
A CS degree is the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation.
So do aim for college and a degree. In the mean time have fun and build things! Make games, robots, websites, mobile apps, compression tools or even your own programming language!
I cold applied to Meta, I'll consider it a huge W just getting an online assessment
hi does anyone know a good bootcamp to join for software developer career field
Do you have the option to go to college? Or are you switching careers?
i do go to college, but i think i need a mentor who could navigate me towards making a big project and everything that i needed to learn
I think your faculty should be able to provide that right, there's mentorship programs
they dont have it
do you want to be a frontend software developer or a backend?
I just got entry pos so dont have much experience, but in my country no one hires people after paid bootcamps if thats what you meant, they think its a simple cash grab, makes sense tbh.
I reccomend just learning everything from udemy and learn on Your own like me
thats another thing i dont know about
uhm, in that case idk if bootcamp is where you go for that kind of mentorship, like, they're more for career transitioning
The terms “front-end” and “back-end” are thrown around all the time in web development. But what exactly do they mean?
In this video, we break down the differences between the “front-end” and the “back-end.” In short, the “front-end” is what visitors or users see when they interact with a program, application, or platform. The “back end” is whe...
also i do need the project so i coudl have a portfolio to put on my resume so i could apply for internships
oh i know what they both mean, but im just not sure what i want to choose
maybe full stack im not really sure honestly
if you want to frontend go for https://scrimba.com/ and the backend maybe https://www.boot.dev/
Scrimba is a fun and fast way of learning to code! Our interactive courses and tutorials will teach you React, Vue, Angular, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and more.
if you have a degree in CS or SWE, I don't think it makes any sense to go to a bootcamp
https://frontendmasters.com/learn/fullstack/ go for this
well yeah but i dont really learn in uni i guess, i need to make my own projects and learn from there
i suggest start with frontend and the move to backend
my advice is to reconsider how you're approaching your degree instead of turning these other avenues
Don't you do projects for your degree?
yeah but theyre group projects and usually my friend coded for everything, so i dont relly learn anything
So, this might sound rude but it is a genuine question asked in the spirit of help.
If you know you're slacking off and not learning anything in college, why do you think you wouldn't also slack off and avoid learning anything in boot camp?
no i wont slack off this time, i didnt contribute bc my friend just worked on it alone
That's probably happened to all of us at some point or another, but in the course of a multi-year degree program in (presumably) CS or SwE, you ought to have multiple opportunities to apply yourself in learning through projects.
Focus on finishing your degree. If this is a degree in CS you absolutely shouldn't need a bootcamp, but if you actually do,.by then you should at least know what it is you're trying to learn from one.
If you can finish your degree in CS you can absolutely build your own portfolio without wasting money on a bootcamp. If you can't, it's probably not the right field for you
^ and: That's about as effective as going to the gym and having your friend lift the weights.
Zoom interview today
And Friday
Wish me luck.
I do have a job it's just not related to tech. I didn't get into programming until I was old
Oh that was in response to very old post lol
Didn't realize I was offline when I replied
Discord ui strikes again
Best of luck!!
Google has recently implemented a new policy that raises significant privacy and safety concerns for Android app developers on the Play Store. Under the "App support > About the developer" section, Google has started displaying the **developer's full legal name, mobile number, and home address **to anyone who visits the app's page on the internet.
Currently, this change applies to new developer accounts, but it is expected to extend to existing accounts in the near future. It appears that once a developer completes the new account verification process by providing their **identity cards **on the Play Console, their personal information will become visible on their app's Play Store page.
As an Android app developer, I find this policy deeply troubling. Exposing developers' personal details, such as their home address and phone number, to the public internet poses serious risks to their privacy and safety. This information could be misused by malicious actors for harassment, stalking, or other nefarious purposes.
Furthermore, this policy may discourage developers from creating apps or participating in the Android ecosystem altogether, as they may not feel comfortable sharing their personal information so openly. This could lead to a reduction in the diversity and innovation of apps available on the Play Store.
Does anyone here receive stocks as part of their job offers?
im trying to figure out if this thing is a scam or actually useful, they unlock every 6 months
Yeah I think it's fairly common. I think Nvidia even had this problem where their developers started retiring early cuz they offered stock and it blew up in value
I never accepted one so idk the details of how it usually works
yes, it's quite common. whether it's a scam or useful will depend on the offer itself, though. you will need to do some math
maybe just a move to do less work investigating malware apps, devs migrates to "apps publishers" and this publishers filters what is good or not, lets see if there is any layoff in cybersecurity team in the nexts mounths
I think it makes sense to ask for your personal info, since you do get a lot of access to people's phones, but I don't see the need to make that info public
Not quite sure how this is career discussion, but indeed quite an obnoxious move by Google. However the reason is likely to provide more transparency of who owns your data (?) and to maybe screen developers so that they are trusted and not just random accounts uploading malware (PyPI reference - @vital wyvern 😔 ), as the Play Store has a lot of problems with that.
it seems alright its like 20k$ which u can just sell every 6 months as far as im aware
but its like part of the salary, it makes the base salary visibly worse in comparison, the stocks if u divide by 24 are like 60% of the entire salary
and the company is doing fairily well, im not that big on following this kind of stuff
also whats up with companies asking the exact adress where I live so I can apply, like y do you even need that info
To fully understand this new policy, I encourage you to carefully review the following webpages:

https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/equity-for-software-engineers/ worth a read. it's not always that simple
what does this have to do with #career-advice
60% of TC in equity is a relatively large proportion, though
ah app development. that's why it's in #career-advice ?
I still don't see how it is related to career discussion
thank u a lot, i think the country itself and small wages have part in that
yea idk either
I've added a couple steps before applying. I think mass applying is not gonna cut it, I gotta at least tailor a little bit and half the companies ask "why do you wanna join us" in the application form
that would help yes
i tailor all
then again, diff circumstances. i haven't even graduated from hofstra yet lol
I'm not sure if I can tailor all
Doesn't look practical
I'd say it depends on the company itself. The only company I would accept this from is a larger company that I know won't go bust in a year or so.
Some companies have programs where you put a portion of your salary in stocks in the company. If the company does well those stocks can be worth it.
tailoring all landed me about 25-30 interviews
I think I've never done it. Tho I do get better results when I write a cover letter
they have that as well where u can get them at 15% discount
maybe im just scared, i would have preferred a bigger base salary instead
How big is the company? How is their cashflow and how long have they been operating?
its AMD
Gotcha, no risk of them going bust anytime soon then haha
ah i don't write cover letters. unless it's a requirement,
the discount is usually not static. if you have stock options, then you have the option to buy stock at a certain price. if the company stock is worth more, then you get a discount, and the value is the difference in price between your options and the current stock price. if the stock is worth less, then the options are worthless
I concur with what static said earlier, you need to do some math on it and see if it's worth it for you
idk this is also my first job shift as well so im anxious
it should be worth it in theory, im basically trying to get out of this game of thrones drama happening at my current company
all my tasks are wildcards its impossible to become an expert
and this job is python developer as well which sounds nice
they even randomly pick on me for buying a pc or taking vacation its become insane
that sounds horrible 😦
then they call me poor as well as if thats my fault
damn, sounds toxic. get out of there asap.
its weird timing as well, last thuesday people gathered up to go to upper management to discuss ab this, cuz its actually our boss calling us poor and insulting us, now i have to like also give my share of the pie knowing already im leaving
hopefully leaving with an offer in hand?
this is wild, isn't this basically an admission of "we are underpaying you" what
im starting in may, i didnt resign yet or tell anyone
Same, I observed the difference cuz some of them forced me to write one
good. don't tell anyone shit yet.
word travels quick in an office
i wish it was only that, i have never imagined going to work to have my boss tell me 3 ways why my car is a shitbox
wow they really doesn't like your car
its not even bad
what do you mean by this, like vastly unrelated tasks? no project based work?
its literally the default car
o.o
integration, devops activities, embedded feature development, cloud ops lately, i literally get random tasks every sprint
i feel like i could do so much more if i just had an area of expertise
they might have a point.. \j
I'm literally anti-cars. Me and your boss would not get along
and this agile shit sucks ass its like 5 meetings per day
oh sounds a lot like my job aha
5/day is kinda insane like i understand daily standup for project based work but when you're doing independent tasks it's silly
daily with embedded team,
sync regarding some random task mentioned in standup
retrospective
daily with devops
30 min sync where they have to trigger a job
20 min meeting ab how to name a branch
Sounds like an excuse to not do work tbh
(not on your part, the people scheduling the meetings)
i actively refuse to join the devops daily but they dragged me in
because its about how they feel about this groovy if statement
The amount of productivity that goes down the drain just cuz I get my flow interrupted multiple times a day
I dont mind them, i say my piece and then do work and have it in background
loll im dreading full time management because of the meetings that follow
when I did some tech lead work I think I spent at least half my time as a bridge between my team and higher ups
That's not a bad car, and anyone saying it is is an asshole. It's basic etiquette not to insult another persons car.
what is the point of agile? i never understood it during my internship
its also pointless because they try to find blockers where they dont exist
im like saying " worked on this and im trying to get this finished by today"

ofc i kissed ass during it and said it was the best thing since sliced bread
then they randomly schedule sync but by the time that happens its done
What is this ad
What are sync meetings anyway, isnt that the point of standup
no cuz our standup is 30 mins and longer topics require their separate meetings
Usually meant to sync different teams
Sounds like corporate time wasting

imo useful in project based (especially customer facing) work where you want a proper scrum master to effectively allocate priorities, kanban can get tricky especially with developers who are perfectionists and tend to fixate on the wrong details
Depends on the corporation, in my work they are fundamental to get everyone on the same page. But they can be done better or worse.
our team didn't have a scrum master
this is a beautiful video
the issue with agile in most industry is that it keeps getting done very wrong or placed where it shouldn't
i do like having sprints, i do well with time chunking and deadlines, but other than that idk tbh
scrum master's job isn't to set priorities, that's the product owner
u mean, feature owner
now product owner is split into 6 different entities which si the new meta here
y'all should i apply to Boeing? even with all the controversy?
I will pay extra money not to fly boeing
should i go? maybe it's a good networking opportunity
There will always be controversy.
show my face around, throw my resume, practice elevator pitches
what does the scrum master actually do then? (you can tell I haven't used scrum in quite a while aha)
On the one hand a newsworthy engineering failure suggests the internal processes at the company aren't all working well and it might not be a good place to work.
On the other hand, all companies have engineering failures. Companies with a recent newsworthy one might be more attentive to their internal problems. Applying to a company that hasn't had a major PR goof in 20 years certainly is no guarantee that they won't have one tomorrow
the scrum master's job is to make sure that the scrum process itself is working and to run the daily standup
removing procedural obstacles and facilitating the team
I suppose the question then is weather the company will survive, and I'd guess that yes since it has survived these things many times before
oh yeah boeing is gonna be fine
if they're desperate for talent right now, maybe it's a really good time to apply.
opens tab and searches for boeing career page
damian is in business analytics iirc
correct
i'd have a much better edge in this if i was a CS major. oh well.
don't be like me kids
Let go 3 months later because they went under
... that's if i get in mar LMAO
Bought out is much more plausible than going wholly under
Even that seems unlikely IMO but I'm not the business analyst here
Thats just how they'll publicize it
im still not flying boeing for the next 5years
im already scared of flying in the first place
Fun fact, commercial airplanes are only allowed to put one row of seats in the plane of the jet engine blades in case it explodes outward
isn-isnt that one row too many
In return for that, you get extra leg room 🙂
Would you be interested in discounted tickets if you hold the doors in place mid flight
im applying to more research oriented positions like ML Research Scientist or ML Research Engineer, but they always ask for phd so idk what's my success rate gonna be
I think I'd have a better chance if I actually got something published in an ML journal
Hi, we don't allow advertisement and recruitment as per rule 6 & 9. Kindly delete this

And shen wondered why a dev would jump out of an airplane: #career-advice message
Any experienced python devs got a few minutes for me to waste?
Do you have a specific question
More of looking for a code review and an honest evaluation. I'm dealing with impostor syndrome and I want an impartial opinion
#1035199133436354600 has a Code Review tag
Impartial opinion: You're not the imposter.
But nasty things were said and they hurt my feelings 😭
I mean dammit to hell! Kick me in the crotch, but not the chops
Who said them?
kapoios ellhnas?
Nobody really important
No
Ok, next question. Does anybody know ALL the modules in the STL? The nasty comments were inspired by the fact that I haven't memorized every single module in the STL. I can freaking read so I never felt the need to memorize them
I've been coding for decades. I've never not needed a dedicated monitor for Googling/documentation/etc.
Even if I think I remember the syntax, I'm still looking it up, because sometimes there's an option I forgot about.
So just a jerk huh? Maybe this is a personal issue, but being a self taught dev my impostor resistant skin isn't so thick.
What did they say specifically
I'd say "insecure gatekeeper", if their critique was you not knowing every stdlib module.
(ofc regardless of the content of their review, their tone is inexcusable)
But if you werent aware of itertools for example, letting you know it exists is valid
Or if you were doing your own json parsing cause you were unaware of json module...
a person can use some x thing sooooo often ( STL library in this case) , that he has everything memorized
that doesnt mean that he sat down and tried to learn every single module , it just comes with practice and using it over and over
googling and looking stuff up is insanely common
I'd rather not go into every detail, but the words that stand out the most in my mind are 'You're wasting my time' and this all started when I was asked 'Do you know the python modules' I immedeatly asked if he was referring to native or external modules and apparently that was the wrong answer because sharp words and claws were brought to bare.
well that's... incredibly rude and completely uncalled for
The room went silent. Let me guess. I've screwed the nomenclature up again...
Is this a coworker/lead that said these things?
"the python modules" is wildly unspecific
More of the compitition. I'm currently contracting to an indie company trying to pad my resume and this individual also contracts to that company
ah. ok so it's not like you can go to HR/their boss or anything
Young engineer too?
Your only other option is to just make a mental note that this person wants to be a jerk and then just ignore them from now on
Younger than me, but not young young. Mid thirties.
Eh, whatever, just insecure.
Sure they can, assholes arent good for any companies whether employees or contractors
yeah i suppose
Ok, then i would suggest also mentioning something to this person's direct boss. They will, if they're any good at their job, openly accept this feedback
More like I need to toughen up. He just hit one of my sensitive spots.
Being a dick is not them hitting a sensitive spot
I have taken action on people being a-holes to each other before and I have no regrets
Junior dev here...self taught junior dev. Not trying to make waves.
I go to HR and their choice is self taught vs MB. I don't like my odds in that one.
I flat out declined a job when someone did something similar during an interview. Saves me some headache not having to work with them.
Youre not going to say "its me or them" you'll say, "this person said so and so during a code review moment" and then attach screenshots or logs
(screenshots and logs you hopefully have or go get right now)
It was all verbal and there were no witnesses.
Not much you can do then unfortunately ,forget and move on
Look at my code and tell me it isn't crap
I mean still mention something to the boss. It can be over email so there's a paper trail and then speak to them verbally as well. It's best that they at least become aware of the potential problem because if someone else comes to them with the same concerns, it will only add validity to your claim
That's not the point here. It might actually be crap, but there are much better ways to communicate that than "you're wasting my time do you even code bro"
@wheat hatchAre you in the wireless industry by chance?
Exactly, a solid colleague don't give feedback in that way
Yes, how so?
You are correct, however, I'm in no position to force that. My only real recourse is to cry like a baby then move on.
And I don't think my code is crap...
You're not forcing anything. You're simply raising a concern with a peer's boss
I'm just trying to convice you that it absolutely is within your power to do so. Whether you act is on you
I understand and I do appreciate it, but in the current job market I don't really want to do that
Also if your code was crap then the proper thing to do would be for an experienced dev to sit down with you and do some pair programming. That's constructive, saying you are wasting time gives zero value.
Can i ask why?
Because the market is flooded with CIS majors and devs with decades of experience practically begging for jobs.
Do you think they'd fire you if you mention this to your boss?
I feel fortunate to have a dev job because I'm self taught and the past march was exactly 1 year of pro experience for me
Yeah i don't see how that's actually relevant to the issue at hand
I don't know.
Where are you (generally) located? US or elsewhere?
Where are you based if you don't mind me asking?
Some markets might be very saturated but others might be more open, have you looked around a bit outside your current industry?
hmmm
Maybe I should add that I'm also a felon. You have no idea how lucky I was to get this job so I don't want to do anything to risk it
Ok. Well i have over 10 yrs in the industry (also in US) and can tell you that raising these types of concerns with leadership will not impact your job. The only way i can see it having an impact is if you end up being a bigger a-hole than the person you're concerned about
Again, seems to be irrelevant here
If you want to ramp up your learning, try answering questions in #1035199133436354600 and following the conversations in #python-discussion . I learn something new every day here.
Haha yeah, you are the first one that guessed it btw 😄
Guessed? That's an acronym i see everyday (look at my profile)
Qualcomm based
you too?
I only buy phones with qualcomm chips
Nope, I work on the cell tower side. But a lot of integration together with you guys.
Ericsson?
Yep, baseband
Cool. I spend a lot of time reverse-engineering your NR configs
Haha really? We sending you crap?
Naw it's legit.
Awesome, I mainly work uplink so I spend most of my days making sense of the stuff you send haha
uplink is a bitch
which is also legit in qualcomms case
My team lost our key UL expert to Broadcom a few months ago
Oh damn, that sucks. You worked for qualcomm long?
6ish years i think
Back in the day they dominated the market. No worthy competitors
Started with 0 wireless knowledge. That was fun
Yeah there seems to be a few others trying to join in now
at least on the cellular side
Oof, that must have been tough. Sounds like you made it over the threshold ok though
cellular is hella complex compared to other wireless stuff like wifi and so, quite the learning curve
Yeah i learned a lot for sure and now i get by. Biggest thing was being comfortable with finding things in the spec
idk why I'm getting approached for an optics engineering role, but it happened and im so tired of the spam but I also need linkedin because some companies don't let me apply any other way
Good afternoon,
I am looking into a new/different job. I would like to know the differences between Cyber Security or Data Science. From your experience, what are 'pros' and 'cons' of each ?
Is there a way to see what a day 'on the job' would look like ?
i worked on cybersecurity for automotive if that is any help
do you mind if we DM?
i mean i have nothing to hide
In school we had these job fairs where you could talk with various professionals
yeah thats fair, just didnt want to clog the chat
this is what the channel is for though
i guess, my question is more of, what do you work on ? i get the concept of cyber security and etc but, do you work on the company's website to make sure it's not breachable ? or work on the software they use for the parts, etc etc
well in automotive its more like restricting access to different access groups and ensuring that the connection youre making is from an autorised source
how would that translate to python ? using dict to make sure their key and value are authorized ?
cyber security is a domain, like healthcare. That includes all sorts of people and roles
(still very beginner)
um, we work with C++ it looks more like establishing authenticated diagnostic access using certificate chain
do you just work on the maintenance of the software or you create your own ?
meaning like the thing u plug into ur car to diagnose errors, is directly going to use an onlince certificate , kindof like DRM for games
you take ownership of your solutions, usually there are standards from Vector Elektrobit about how authenticated access is managed, but if client has some special requirements, the solution must be implemented and maintaned by u
I basically lived in TS 36.211 for a good many years
if the already existing solutions dont fit client requiremetns (which most of the time they dont) u look at what they did to get an idea of what they tried to do and build on top of it, usually u look to avoid reinventing the wheel when there are standards in place
do you know what those domains are ??
cyber security is related to the security of computer systems. Healthcare is related to the health of people
no no i get that, but i mean that for my, cyber sec is 'counter hacking'. keeping the ennemy away from your systems. so that is why i asked
36 is LTE right? Edit: yes it is
automotive cyber sec is not that cool
but people love what u do because it sounds complicated
the only and only similar thing i had to do thats outside of standards is attack notification
yeah!
And as a domain, it means you have people working on testing the security of companies, others making sure a company is following best practices for security, others are working on kernels for hardware networking equipments, others in collecting data so it can be analyzed to detect security problems, others are working on preventing security bugs in code, etc.
So there are all sorts of skills involved! Even product manager, engineering manager and designers
when you go to school, do you learn them all or you just focus on one ?
Yep, release 15 was the first NR release of the standard iirc. I work mostly with LTE, a bit with NR but I only have a laymans understanding of the channel codings there.
In school, you focus on the foundations of CS so that you can do any of these jobs
Basically the same as LTE but every tiny detail of the phy layer is now parameterized
In terms of career, a CS degree is the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
what do you mean by that ?
Can you be more specific?
the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation
Which part of that expression is unclear?
resistance in terms of career path ?
It'll be harder, longer and more risky to not get a degree.
(but that's just restating the original assertion)
Don't think I understand fully what you mean by parameters, could you elaborate a bit?
Do you mean references to tables and such in the standard or is it something that gets sent down to the UE in downlink?
in cyber security you have both offensive (red) and defensive (blue), people tend to specialize in either but you can do both (purple)
but is CS only about 'attacking' or 'defending' ? like, what do you 'actually do' ? do you work on hackproofing your company systems by trying to get into the DBs, or etc
it's cool when the cars move on their own 🙂
It's kind of hard to give a single succinct description of what cyber security is about. Several companies label it as the practice of protecting/defending computers, networks and programs from cyber/digital attacks.
CS is a very broad field, there is plenty of paths within CS that you can take, but I think the main goal of every professional within CS is to protect your assets.
Yeah, it's all signaled to the UE in the very extended RRC layer. Even like the periodicity of PBCH xmission is now variable. Every UE can have its own dedicated range of bandwidth within a common channel (bandwidth part is what its called), all the reference signals are totally variable now, etc. etc
getting kind of off topic but hey, it's part of both of our careers so w/e
Of course he's not the imposter. I've offed like. . .3 other people in this room and gotten away with it every time. 😏
Think of it as Dark Sorcery vs Sorcery if you've ever done D&D.
i have not, maybe try World or Warcraft ? horde and alliance ? haha
Well that's a little more grey, as everyone knows the Horde is supreme and the alliance is INFERIOR.
ohhhh, those are fighting words... and you should know, because the Horde always go minimum 3v1 😮
Maybe if SOME PEOPLE would learn about the underrated ancient art of "Jumping" you wouldn't have a numbers issue.
it is called ganking, and the Horde is very well aware on how this works 😉 haha
Oh right, now I understand what you mean. Yeah they started laying the foundations for this back in early LTE/4G. Someone in the 3GPP thought it was a stellar idea to have fixed reference signal RB's for MIMO. Didn't work out so well when the number of antennas increased, so they started doing a lot more variable control in later LTE releases.
It's not every day you run into a fellow industry colleague on a random discord server haha, so I hope the mods excuse us haha
Yeah it's great
Eh, ever since I quit games I forgot ganking was a thing. Anyway, to answer your question: I imagine most CS places won't expect a n00b how to pwn, but as you cimb higher you will be expected to know what said pwnage is.
Because at the end of the day, it comes down to game theory, what do I expect people after my bosses stuff to use? What do they expect me to use?
Gotta tell you though? CS is gonna BLOW UP when Quantum Computing is locked in.
Because the MOMENT that happens, EVERYONE'S data is fair game and not everyone has quantum safe encryptions.
how so ?
Because the MOMENT that happens, EVERYONE'S data is fair game and not everyone has quantum safe encryptions, and they are going to be turning to people like you at emergency speeds to secure their data and their goods as fast as possible.
Well anyways, if I ever get laid off from QCOM i'll come knocking on the door at Ericsson
That sounds like a solid plan, your UE experience will be a major advantage
isn't it super easy to come up with quantum safe encryption ?
also I have no idea what was said here o.o
In wireless there is a concept called MIMO which basically means you send and receive multiple data streams using multiple antennas to speed things up. In early 4G someone thought it was a good idea to permanently allocate a bunch of frequencies for reference signals which the cellphone and the celltower used to make the magic work. This didn't work out so well when the number of antennas used increased because each antenna needed its own reference frequency.
Hi
interesting, thank you for simplifying it for me
Sorry we were geeking out lol
No worries, society would benefit from more geeking out imo
i wanna be a plumber
I wanna be an ML Research Scientist, but don't really see a clear path to it
Yes, we all want to be Mario.
remind me what country/general area you're in? I think you could pull it off if you look in industry. (Because academic positions are few and competitive.)
I'm in Portugal but my intention is to relocate.
I wouldn't be interested in academia, I've been having a good time in the industry and don't wanna get out. Like that would be the problem because that also means I wouldn't want to do a PhD unless it's possible within the industry
It seems that a lot of the industry positions ask for PhD, which would put me at a disadvantage for a lot of the applications I make
ML research scientist in what area?
EU, UK or US, tho realistically due to visa - EU or UK
not location, I meant subject
Oh, deep learning
ok its possible to do this without a phd, you need work experience as a MLE (preferably RE) at a company with a good reputation in deep learning
ideally you would publish or work on a "cutting edge ai product"
Why RE ?
Oh sorry I misread, you meant research engineer
a RE is the intermediate between MLE and research scientist
you do engineering-heavy deep learning research (infra for training big llms/doing deep learning experiments for example)
basically, make yourself useful and get involved in research until you have the effective qualifications of a research scientist
I got MLE experience, but not at any big company, I usually remoted to startups in the UK or in the US
I might also get something published in the near future
in the short future the best place to stay is at research
This is the path I took, I worked at a company and led a deep learning cv project, trained big models, published a lot then got hired at a LLM research lab
dev roles will sufer too much with AGI implementation, until the job market gets stable
That is awesome. But I haven't really led a project, tho I was the main driver for the ones I was in cuz that's just the nature of startup work
The important thing is that I can pass the RS interviews and have published as much as the RS's they hire. I don't have a phd but am much more useful as an engineer
How many publications did you do before getting hired ?
Thats ok, there are many different paths to make this work
Basically you need a research scientist to look at your work experience, talk to you and think "yep this person is obviously qualified"
15, first on 3 (over 4 years)
Not unlike how I broke into software I suppose
That's quite a lot. So it might take me a bit to get there then
yeah it was a grind
and I read papers constantly, studied the lit in deep learning for computer vision then LLMs (especially focused on LLMs for code)
The goal is to be basically indistinguishable from someone with a phd in the area, since that is the bar
you can be weaker in some areas, but need to make up for it in others
ye but i wasnt on anything connected to those unfortunately, would love to control my car with wasd
(it also took a fair amount of networking to get the first opportunities)
i fear cars moving on their own, there is a lot of attacks they must mitigate
My math should be pretty strong, but with holes here and there cuz I don't come from the pure maths. But I can quickly cover any gaps.
I guess I'm just gonna apply and see what happens and keep going as an MLE while I get stuff published.
I'll see if I can get a role as an RE
sounds like a plan
If you can join a company that is doing the work you want to do. Even if you are not in exactly the role that you want. As an extreme example, if you join a company like openai or anthropic as a MLE, there is a straightforward path to become a researcher (since at that point you are 'part of the club' and can convince your colleagues/get involved on a day-to-day basis)
Id be extremely happy to join open ai as an MLE.
This is the stuff I've been doing lately, do you think it could fit into the role of a research scientist ?
I don't. Might sound superficial, but the type of woman I attract is important to me, I just don't see myself attracting the type of woman I would like to be with as a ML/ research scientist.
I don't follow
Isn't what you like to be doing more important ?
It's complicated, mate.
For example, I'm interested in running a tech company, but if you asked me if I wanted to be Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk or Zuckerberg the answer is "no".
Looks like a reasonable starting point for RE - Some feedback:
- did you benchmark your attention implementation and train real models with it? How does it compare to efficient kernels like flash attention v2?
- "exploring novel uses of compilers" bulletpoint is not clear enough on what you did or why it is useful
- "implementing the backwards pass" what layers? metrics? why do you need efficient kernels for this? Training at scale?
- "Replicating the metaformer study" more of a side project than work experience?
- "Reached a GPU burn rate" why would you do this? what is the shape of the workload? why not use more standard serverless solution?
- "Implemented and currently training transformers" why would you implement from scratch? how big? what for?
- "Carried out eda" what does statistically invariant manner mean? Can't you just randomly sample?
- "Ensured 0 GPU down-time" Why is your data pipeline bottlenecking training? Shouldn't you process data first? GPU downtime is not a great metric, maybe instead report MFU?
Overall the experience is sort of scattered and doesn't tell a coherent story about how you would fit into a team. Are you the kernel guy? SRE? Pretraining?
Oh nice thank you for the feedback !
I was gonna answer the questions but those kinds of details are more for an interview, I can't cram everything in there.
I'm everything, I do everything, that's how it goes in super small companies
no need to answer, these are just the thoughts and doubts I had reading it, thought they might be helpful for you to hear
Yeah it's super helpful ofc, thank you for writing them
I mean most people who run companies are neither of those two guys, they're like, two people in what must be a million or wtv
so true, automotive cybersec is difficult
read the warning message
i did how can i instal it?
read the thing before the warning message too. The warning actually tells you how
oh woops yeah this is #career-advice
i fixed it
Is it funny how the people who don't read error messages and the people who don't seem to know which channel they are in are often the same? 😅
it is
But those people are examples of people you should look up in the tech industry ?
should they? They aren't looked up in the tech industry though
The math does check out.
Bezos does impress the heck out of me. Just think of the guts it took to start Amazon? To grow it to a viable bookseller? To transition and reinvent itself, etc. at this point, it's a victim of its own success; it's grown too powerful perhaps, but that doesn't take anything away from how impressive a leader Bezos is to have pulled this off.
Now Zuck? I dunno.
the Lizard 🦎 😍😍😍😍
I am in high school and i want to be an electrical engineer so i just decided to learn python as a skill to have
good stuff
Economy Watch: India's Youth Face Rising Unemployment | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has released a report on the Indian workforce. It says, India's youth make up almost 83% of the unemployed population. Although youth employment saw an uptick from 2000 to 2019, the pandemic years have witnessed a sharp ...
Numbers are scary!
you are from India?
Yeah!
i'm indian. born in the US tho.
U escape the matrix
thanks to my parents, yeah
||It's time to leave india!||
I think indian main problem is salary, no salary growth in indian companies they offered same package from last 20-30years
High population = cheap labour = companies profit!
Hi I am in class 11 started to study computer science
Can anybody advice me some career options ?
Pray that 90% of CS students drop out so the labor market will tighten
Cs students are already decreasing after ai mainly when people heard about devin
devin will not take our jobs
Sure, definitely an interesting case. Amazon's leadership principles do come frequently in discussions
But is it someone you would recommend other engineers to look up to? I assume there is also an assumption about looking up to with the intention to emulate.
But it decreases job opportunities
In IIT sector 30 to 40 percent jobs are dropped
AI isn't ready to replace humans. AI is a wonderful co-pilot, but isn't really useful on complex algorithms
How so? Devin has been announced like 1-2 weeks ago and I doubt there have been enough time for new enrollments to happen or for schools to account for drop outs
^
a good 'ol friend of mine (on this server) always says cs is the path to least resistance for an opportunity in CS
I have seen many peoples are leaving computer sector and joining medical sector even my many friends
Great. More jobs for us
Right now the primary issue is an oversaturation of the job market. Lots of factors went into it, but this is a temporary slow down IMHO.
Hmm but in future what face ai takes nobody knows , it is growing very fast
Medical sector is always evergreen
health is always priority of humans
Loose labor pool = lower wages and less hiring. Tight labor pool = higher wages and more competition for employees
Tech will come back a few million people just have to wonder off
Overall fertility rate is low may be in 1century we will see higher no. of jobs
Anyone knows codewithharry?
Soooo....you're advocating for less sex? Noooo, I don't really see that as an acceptable solution. 😁
I'm fairly certain that should throw a logical error message
Nope!
can we not
How biology came here?
It's essential for humans

Hi!
How does this relate to this channel?
Yes, there are other channels. See #❓|how-to-get-help
Because of Devin AI
I mean if devin ai is enough to scare you away you were not passionate enough about this stuff in the first place
put it that way, he does sound like the one with the most respectable journey, among the known tech billionares
Ik one guy that was learning how to code for extra income when he learnt about Devin AI he stopped he’s a millionaire already so does it really matter ?
millionare in need of extra income ?
You do realise millionaires have at least 10 mainstream incomes?
Maybe he wants to be a billionaire
well yeah, they have the capital to have 10 stream of incomes, that comes from having the money in the first place, not you personally having to generate that income
A million dollars isn't what it used to be
haven't noticed the difference myself, by virtue of not having them
Nor I, but I can extrapolate.
The average "millionaire" these days is what? A single guy with a 401(k) and a suburban house that isn't even paid off yet?
It's not exactly multiple income stream money
By the time I retire most people will be millionaires and it won't mean anything anymore
ig when I think of a rich millionare i think of someone relatively young and with 20-50M upwards networth
I dont see that happening in my country tho, i expect that the population will get richer but not to the point that being a millionare is a norm
Cost of living varies a lot yeah
but the economy is global and inflation is inexorable
quite a lot, I'd say just 5-10 years in the US and I can retire back here
i think not because of Devin, AI itself will shake the entire IT industry in 10 years, if a person pursue stability it's not a big deal
until an ai robot thing is not able to even wash my dishes and do my laundry, im not worried
once they arrive I'll for sure buy one tho
ah yes a minimum of 12 years of experience.
I don't enjoy doing those tasks, can't wait til we oversee robotic non-conscious automata that do all our slave work

probly spam, but will take it as a good sign
is the book "cracking the coding interview" worth getting?
did u take it as you liked it or parents forced?
depends where you live, if is a third world contry like mine, a robot like that wold cost 100 minimum salaries, sadly
hopefully such a revolution would affect all corners of the world positevely
have you taken an algos course? if so, you shouldn't need to study super hard for coding questions.
what in the world
medical sector is not very forgiving, those are hard thankless jobs where you have to almost lose your empathy or go insane due to the bad stuff you see
the well paid ones are super duper competitive too, like, not anyone can be surgeon
i disagree about lose empathy, there is good people in the world as bad ones
i dont mean as in becoming a bad person, but more like, if you're an emergency room doctor you can't cry everytime someone dies and even if it leaves you sad, you can't let it bring you down cuz long term you'll just develop depression
anyways we are mostly gonna get replaced by bots, if we are not competitive.
i think not, it's a thing that modernity make us forgive, the brutal nature of begin a living creature, they trying save lives
I'm certain that people working at places like Doctors Without Borders aren't the people who lose their empathy, otherwise they'd never keep doing what they're doing though. I have friends in the medical sector and they're still empathetic. Certain roles are just fit for different types of people in the medical sector. Everyone definetly isn't fit to be a trauma surgeon, but those who aren;t can certainly be pediatritions, general practitioners, maybe specialize in working with diabetics, etc.
im not sure what you're disagreeing with, im just saying you get desensitized to life and death, and that reflects on your personality and interactions with others, if not even on your mental well being
you make a good point, I guess it will depend on your starting point and how you evolve in response to being exposed to certain realities. these are observations that I make and that I've seen a lot of people make, that a lot of doctors seem to lack emotional understanding or dismiss a certain thing that the patient brings up but then it ended up being something super impactful to their health - I know countless examples it's very common
but again, my point is just that, it's not for everyone
it's more a philosophical matter, i think is easier forget death is natural as begin alive, natural as we suffer in different ways
but yes, it's not for everyone, medine path, specially in emergence can give a lot of traumas
i don't subscribe to that way of thinking, like, to me death is something that shouldn't happen, I don't much care for how mother nature wants things to be, i think nature is for us change and transform, ---- tho, we are totally off topic, I'm open to continuing the conversation in offtopic if you want: https://discord.com/channels/267624335836053506/463035268514185226
yess, you are right, it's is on another place heuheu
algo course as in? I'm currently trying to do dsa from gfg and leetcode, if that's what you meant...
At a university.
oh yeah, i'm a comp engg student
guys i passed my first interview round! now i just have to score.
do your degree requirements include an algorithms and data structures course?
yeah, i did it 2 semesters ago
FINRA
Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)
thanks! now i just have to pass the final round and i'm through
yea, in MD.
is that a gov institution ?
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority is a private American corporation that acts as a self-regulatory organization that regulates member brokerage firms and exchange markets.
idk what any of this means
not part of the gov. they work with the SEC tho. the SEC is part of the government.
well good luck for the final interview, hope you nail it and get a good offer
thanks man. i will try my best. i need this.
just go in chilled, more than half the battle is just not being anxious during it
yep
this application form asks an obligatory question of which university I went to, like, not which course I took or my degree level, just which uni, full stop
honestly just glad they are transparent about it so I can safely avoid them
Not that they'd hire me lol
I came up with a brilliant passive income.
Im gonna start a charity for african children.
But I keep 90% of the money.
Then reinvest the money to market the charity.
Hustler mentality
Invisible Children already tried that
Pft, Amateur. . .the African Children grift is SOOOO~ 2016. We're doing LGBTQ+ youths now. For just 10.99$/ month, you can help Kelsea get the body she should have been born in, Ohohohohohohoho~
I'm an african child
pls donate
Most countries in Africa have LGBTQ+ banned.
including mine 😏
seriously I'm an african child do I deserve donations
I saw that before lmaoooo 😭
**IMPOSSABLE! 👿 😡 🔥 **
In my country they wouldn't react like that but in 5 seconds you'd find yourself in prison or in someone's house
Someone's house 🤨
So what you're saying is, if I kidnap- I-I mean!. . . . .Collect your bounty by turning you into an African country , I can make moneh!? Heck yeah! Wait, does that make me the bad guy? 🤔
You are doing good to society.

I'm missing something...brain isn't working thought
For some reason each the process_folder method is counting the arguments passed......
Nevermind, I forgot the comma. It's supposed to be a tuple...I'm an idiot
Yeah tuples do that

Wait a minute, you're telling me I've been in a society all this time?! Oh lord, I gotta get outta here!
Anyway gang, gonna start applying soon, wish me luck.
Good luck.
Hey did anyone do the specialization course of Coursera
I've just completed all the required courses but idk how to get the professional certificate or the badge for the same. Could anyone help me out with this. Thank you.
Ooooh~ umm. . .
Deeks, did you do the specialization course free i.e. audit or did you pay your way?
No no i got the course from a third party organization
I have the individual course certificates downloaded with me already of all 5 but not the specialization certificate
I did a few minutes of research about this issue but i couldn't find any solution to my specific problem
Proxmox
this isn't a meme/shitposting server
I might manage a grant for my project
I feel like a researcher already

let's get back to talking about careers
I want to get a job as an AI engineer so I want to know more about the field, like the position I can get? what specialization I can do?
Also, what's the scope of a career in this field?
<@&831776746206265384> are we getting raided
if you have moderation issues , contact @severe widget
are you basing this on Attis's comment, or what?
yes, the other mute further up and the couple warnings in py-gen
Nah I don't but it's so stupid
I just made a joke replying to someone saying something about sending donations to children and African and I said something along the lines of "I'm an african child send me money"
maybe its a coincidence and i just looked at career discussion at the wrong moment
bro that clearly is a silly joke, though I didn't lie about anything like I'm a 17 year old moroccan
Please make sure that all subsequent messages are about careers.
the warning looks pretty clear and reasonable to me , dont know where you get the stupid part from
- It's not a false premise, which the warning states.
- I was clearly not soliciting donations.
- There was nothing inappropriate about my message.
ok yeah well maybe that one but it was only one message

mb, sorry
I swear to God, the only times I get approached by a recruiter for a realistic opportunity within my skill set - it's not on LinkedIn
I don't even know how he even got this email tho
Like he clearly knows the stuff I'm doing now, and also knows part of my educational background and yeah it kinda makes sense
Ah, but the compensation looks way too suss, it's waaaaaay too high, and not even including equity >.>
is it too late to get an internship? i saw a few poistions open up, and im working towards those rn
What? You're suspicious because a recruiter is trying to recruit you?
I always try to be careful, especially with remote opportunities, there's definitely scams out there. Haven't faced one myself but heard stories.
I wouldn't turn down at the recruiter phase. Later, sure, but what's the harm at recruitment phase?
I'm not turning down, it looks to be a pretty good opportunity actually.
I'm just exercising caution, as in, trying to find inconsistencies, in case it's fake there's a higher chance of them mounting up. Just in case.
Tho the compensation really is on the higher end, he might be mistaken about my experience level.
like what for what context?
250k + equity, remote MLE
Company is in Denver
Like it's clearly super high, they usually at least argue to scale it down due to my COL
uh, that's really freaking good for denver
What is your experience level?
Approaching 2.5years
Ok. I'd say that's too much for your exp. level in Denver, so you could be correct about this
he might be mistaken about my experience level.
That being said i agree with BillyBobby. No real reason to turn it down yet
(I live in Denver area btw)
I'm not even in Denver, COL here is very likely lower than Denver
I'll still follow up yeah, might manage a more junior position
Yeah, I've been taken in a time or two. Always somebody else looking for an edge even if it means cheating you into doing their work
Heard a story of someone who got "hired" but it was a plot to get her guard down to share personal banking information. I don't recall the details but it was pretty elaborate
class AssHatteryException(Exception):
def init(self):
self.message = "Don't fall for it"
super().init(self.message)
wtf...it removed my underscores...
I mean some things are kinda hard not to share. At least my last remote I recall having to share my ID card and stuff like that. For tax purposes. But someone with bad intentions might use that info for identity theft.
You don't learn electronics in engineering ?

they also need to verify you have the right to work
I did get a fair bit of electronics lab in school, and I'm not even from engineering
Yeah, I mean you gotta be careful I suppose
You learn about electronics everywhere. Middle school, high, everywhere.
Electronics was def not part of my curriculum in HS and below. Tho it shoulda cuz it's super fun
You had absolutely NOTHING about electronics?
Zero. Not part of the standard curriculum afaik
Yah, there's a lot of banking related scams. Companies never need to 'wire' you money so you deposit for them/etc.
School? What's that?
It's such a shame they put so much effort and thought into ruining someone's life instead of doing something productive
It's the place you go to learn stuff.
Soooo....schools are required to learn stuff?
Nah, they can even be detrimental actually. But are the most common method yeah
I'm just busting your veggies. I'm self taught so I always play dumb when that there higher edu-ma-ca-tiom is mentioned
My grades were inversely proportional to my time in class.
Hello guys there is many careers
there sure is
And as such, there are many career discussions
wise words
every r/csmajor user needs to hear this
yet somehow, they all seem to focus on the same things 🤔
Hey! I tried an indie company but the money never really worked out. I don't work for my health I work so I can sleep indoors and eat occasionally.
But...I'm not a CS major so...yeah, maybe that statement wasn't for me

woah, didnt knew about that
so how many years of experience do you guys have in programming?

How often do companies ask for your transcript or verify your degree
could happen when you get the job offer
Is it likely for them to check ur transcript tho? Or just the degree usually
Nowadays, it's pretty assured there will be a background check and then they may ask you the degree or transcript or both
I guess it ultimately comes down to the company + whether they trust u or not id imagine or there's some standard screening procedures but ty
What's the worry?
It's less about trust and more about required in some cases like for compliance. plus, it never hurts to check
I don't really have a worry just curious cuz i remember reading several years ago 99% companies don't even verify your credentials but maybe that's changed recently
the depth at which they check may vary from company to company. A lot is also delegated to a vendor anyway
hello guys
so I wrote my BSc final exams few days ago and my Project defence would be coming up in a month time. I just want to say I am officially unemployed😂 .
I am a Data Scientist and Machine Learning Engineer, been programming since 2021. I am currenly exploring NLP and i am working on a TextSentimentAnalysis project, hoping to eventually build a Customer Review Analysis software.
I am readily available to take on any role in the Data field. So guys please hit me
Hi and welcome!
That said, we don't do ads for employment 😉
Oh
My bad
wish all the best for you bro
Damn 30yrs of expereince!
You must be atleast 40 by now man.
If your question is whether you can lie, no, just don't
Otherwise this will vary by country and by employer so nobody can really answer you meaningfully here
Hi I believe those kinds of announcements are against the rules here.
But I'm not sure if it's a good idea to create a company that revolves around the fact that you use python, "python tech startup", assuming that's what it is ofc
!ot better to ask in one of the off-topic channels, this one is for talking about careers

I soon will get used to the fact that "doubt" is synonym to "Question" word with how often it is misused by people from your country in English speaking communities ^_^.
P.s. You need to use the "question" word instead of "doubt" preferably.
it's indian english vernacular.
oh ok
sorry 😅
Hello
Not familiar with Indian English? Are you a "fresher"? "Kindly do the needful" and get used to it 😉
Hey guys, I am a final-year computer science student (expected May 2025) and I am looking for an internship. I study in Coimbatore, India and live in New Delhi. So work location is not a problem for me. I am familiar with Django, Flask, FastAPI, NumPy, Pandas, TensorFlow, HuggingFace, and LangChain. I can also work with PHP, JS, TS, Laravel, React and Next.
apply on linkedin, that's your best opportunity. and build a portfolio.
I applied to 100+ jobs with no response so stopped trying there last month.
not enough, job market's awful. can you post an anonymized version of your resume?
Portfolio: https://siddhesh.tech
if you're not getting any response it's most likely a resume issue
i think you could be more detailed about your projects on your resume
also no response? no rejection? nothing? or just rejections?
No responses
yea, it's as robin said.
Just being ghosted by the companies. No rejection mail or anything
it's 100% the resume. post it anonymized here.
whats wrong with the resume it seems pretty stacked
i would take out the certs they dont add much value
and it feels like the skills section takes up way too much space
you want to show/prove that you have those skills instead of saying "i have these skills, just trust me"
And you're looking for internships?
Yes
It might be too late for this summer. I feel like most would be filled already
How are you claiming to be self taught when youre in uni for that same thing
My team hired our interns for this year like a month or two ago
I know but at least I get to know what I am doing wrong
I learnt Python, PHP and more than 1/2 of those things before joining uni
well for one the projects section chronological order is wrong
reverse chronoligical right?
Jan-Feb -> Feb-March not the other way around
dont put self taught if you're in college
also you abbreviate all the months apart from March, what is the point?
So no certificates, more projects (and chronological arrangement)
Okay sure
i would caution characterizing yourself as self taught if you actually have formal education. you're potentially confusing the reader
Okay, I'll go ahead and fix all these things ASAP
Thanks a lot guys!
for your experience section, you should try to highlight the outcomes of things you did. for example, how many users does your tool have? what did the users think of it (maybe you did surveys or something like that?)? did it improve an existing process?
so how did everyone get their experiences? cause most places need experience beforehand
Well it will be implemented in the 8 computer labs of my college
you should mention that in a bullet point. that shows it wasn't just a random project, it actually had real world uses
Internships usually
Internships
yea but most of the internships that I find require experience as well or it becomes a factor in the application
do you have an example? Are you still in school?
I wanted to ask if this much experience would be allow me to get an internship
I have no CS course experience in school, but I've done a Dual-Credit Course related to Python and plan to do another Dual-Credit over the summer.
I was wondering if i would be able to get internships from just this experience
yes i am a junior in highschool and i will fidn some examples
i am on the same path as you
In most countries (we don't know where you are) programming internships for high school students are a bit rare. But you should look around and see what opportunities are available wherever you are
It's tougher to find internships while in HS. They typically target college/university students
that is true i searchup highschool internships in CS. engineering, etc. Or what i do is I try too hard and contact CS firms near me for internship opportunities
Did a grad program right after uni
I haven't personally seen anything like a high school internship position for CS
How long would it take to master these subjects if I put in 8 hours a day.

Nobody can answer that for you. We don't know you and there is no clear definition of "master". But if you can put in 8 hours of learning every day for a few months I'd expect you can develop a pretty good foundation in all of that
Thanks for info. Previously discord channels were spewing several years or saying shit like you can't self study this
"100 Days of Code" is a popular course. A lot of people struggle to finish in 100 days. But I would guess it at least touches on most if not all of that
If you expect to be job ready in months with no degree and no professional experience I do agree that's a stretch
Oh I believe you, I'm not expecting that. I'm just sicked and tired of people acting like comp sci can't be self taught cause it's "too hard" when I was studying physics beforehand
Lots of people self-learn various programming topics, often on the job. The first milestone is getting 'good' at programming in a single language. Good is hard to define: it might take a few months to be good at the basics, but it takes a lot of practice to be truly competent.
But, don't conflate a CS degree with learning a few programming topics. Four years of college education != learning 4 topics, which might comprise four classes along those four years.
If you have a degree in physics and you learn those topics well enough to put together a good project or two, getting hired as a self taught developer in about a year is probably not an unreasonable goal if you can study full time, but far from guaranteed
Practice handling questions that you don't know the answer to.
I never said that but people can self teach the four year cs curriculum if they wanted to
and I will say it again 😉
And I still believe it comes from elitism. I highly doubt someone like you can finish a physics degree.
nothing to do with elitism.
A CS degree is the path of least resistance and with the most opportunities and compensation.
Wait what? You're countering (perceived) elitism with elitism?
This is the only thing some of you guys can understand. So why not?
What information makes you come to the conclusion I do not or could not have a physics degree?
Why did you turn so hostile all of a sudden?
They didnt get the answer they wanted
I feel like that Ron Burgundy clip... https://youtu.be/rFeVfwDvTyM?feature=shared
The way you bolster a cs degree above the level of self taught. Yes getting a cs degree makes it way easier in getting a job than self taught. But you make it sound like it's impossible to learn this shit on your own to me and to several other people.
Learn is one thing, get a job is another
Not that difficult to distinguish
I didn't say it's impossible.
I said the baseline for someone starting from scratch to entry level job is a degree, which takes 3-5 years. And if you were to specifically focus on these topics from scratch, it would be ~1year to get a surface level knowledge
And yes you can be aware of some of those topics in passing, youre not mastering anything in 100 days
I don't have an issue with the job thing.
I never said 100 days
You havent exactly explained what you mean by master either so we're all going off guesswork here
Can things be learned? Sure. Will self-taught be at a hiring disadvantage? Yes. Which one is more likely to be hirable after 4 years? Degree. No degree is a longer harder path.
Once again I don't have an issue with that
there are two main aspects you have to be aware of:
- A degree or absence of a degree will open different doors. Each one with different rewards and cost. It goes without saying that the more educated person will have an easier time and more rewards
- Each job receives thousands of applicants. Most of which with degrees, projects and internships. You will need a solid plan and an exceptional execution to stand out to get called back for interviews
Then I don't think you and r_e disagree.
You should see his previous interaction with other people then
Whats the purpose of learning all of that if not to find a job?
I'm going wgu to get my degree
I'm not sure what you're referring to, but I think the consensus in this channel is fairly well summarized by: #career-advice message
the benefits of college are not only the courses you can take, but also the professional network, peer group, and internship opportunities
There is a path without a degree, but it often involves landing some adjacent (tech but not programming) job to get professional experience.
mentorship and guidance from experts too
Also the chance to marry up and not have to work because your spouse is a Campbell's soup heiress
Or finding an open door / entry point through networking, like finding a small company who needs some web development
Its not really a path if its through the weeds
fundamentals i finished in a week aka last week
I am self teaching myself but what are projects I can work towards to order to be proficient in python and display it on applications?
It's kinda up to you. Web apps (flask or Django backends) are popular, as are games (pygame-ce), ai/ml/data projects (Kaggle.com/learn) . But for first projects, just focus on things that teach you and don't worry about resume projects. Simple things like rock paper scissors, etc
!kin is a list of great ideas
The Kindling projects page on Ned Batchelder's website contains a list of projects and ideas programmers can tackle to build their skills and knowledge.
Thank you
I can list them right now which other people can also do if interested:
The Stanford Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Imaging Research Internship
Oak Ridge National Laboratory ---- The NextGen Pathway to Computing Program
Sandia National Laboratories High School Internship
Quest Student Research Institute
some for highschool people if interested

i want to focus on a single coding language, java to be specific, i want to teach myself things that are out of syllabus (college), whats a good starting point thankyou
This is a Python server. If you want Python ideas, we can help but for Java, best to go to a Java server
what about python i mean i could do the same for this..
But, my two cents on Java is; start reading the Java Language Specification. It's a great way to learn the innards of the language.
!res for Python learning resources
The Resources page on our website contains a list of hand-selected learning resources that we regularly recommend to both beginners and experts.
ohh okay
okay ill start with that
Start simple and stupid.
Beyond that:
- Learn the project management tooling like Maven or Gradle and how to manage dependencies
- Learn the tooling beyond writing code. That means learning about using a debugger, learning about analyzing memory dumps (very advanced) and tools like mission control
- Learn about the JVM, how it works, general view of the opcodes
- Learn about popular libraries like Spring Framework and Boot
- Learn about concurrency
- Learn about design patterns
- Learn about modules
- Understand the GCs available and how they work and their trade offs
Im learning web development, would it be simply pointless to watch all the required tutorials in one go without practice in between by making websites ?
Like will I retain the majority of the tutorial content if I dont practice or not?
indeed
ok thanks
how much of python would i need to know to say that i know python
practice in between
you can say that you know Python now - no one can stop you
its for an application and theres no place to put my current project
(highschool) so its not that serious
knowing a thing isn't binary. it's not black and white, there's a spectrum. you know more about it than some people, and less than others.
If you're putting something on a resume, expect someone may ask you about it. If you can participate in that conversation, that's mostly what matters.
Well, I guess that depends from person to person. My friends like basic control flow, data types etc and claim to know Python.
Alright so I'm applying to my first software development job and I was just wondering if anyone could give me any tips and or just warn me of potential curveball questions
You most likely won't get that offer off the first application or even interview. Don't let that stop you though. Consider it good practice and keep spamming applications
damn this was excatlly what i was looking for, thank you so much, much appreciated
Hey thanks for the confidence boost I shouldn't ever expect I got the job and gotta keep trying even if my luck is bad.
Hey guys i need some portfolio for data analyst role if u have it kindly share ur portfolio
can someone suggest me a site which can suggest me or can give me daily tasks to complete and submit
Ask GPT
Based on your skill level
Man I'm looking for an internship related to data science, can anyone please help me out?
you can post a censored version of your resume here for people to review and give tips on how to improve it
I'm a student, we are at our 2nd sem currently. Our faculty said that an internship is compulsory in the next month. Bruh i technically have no skills other than what i have studied in these 2 sems.
What should i do?
make yourself attractive to prospective employers so they want you as an intern through projects and stuff
What projects do you recommend?
take the projects you made for class and make them deeper.
Take the skills you learned in class and apply them in whatever project/contexzt related to data science
Try to think from the other side: imagine all your classmates and yourself apply to the same company. Why would they call YOU back instead of any of your classmates?
