When using github, is there a way to see which user downloaded a zip file of your code?
Or even, how many users did?

I experimented a little and you can go incognito, as a non-logged-in user, and download zips so I don't think the 'which user' option is really even there.
But all this is speculation, could someone confirm?

I know the fork thingy gives a notification and all that, but that's not what I'm looking for. What I'm looking for is specifically for downloading zips of the repo

latent scaffold
#

Isn't electron kind of bad?

livid citrus
latent scaffold
#

Chromium bad for RAM usage and not great multi-platform support

livid citrus
#

Well, what else you want to do when making a desktop app?

#

Code it in Qt? πŸ˜…

latent scaffold
#

I mean there are other multi-platform technologies

livid citrus
#

For example?

latent scaffold
#

I won't pretend to know, honestly

#

but I refuse to believe that Electron would be the best

livid citrus
#

Well, discord uses electron πŸ€”

#

And you can simply run web apps in it that can use any frontend js framework

#

So it's appealing for developers

latent scaffold
#

Discord takes way too much RAM and Linux support isn't too great

livid citrus
latent scaffold
#

yes and not convenient for users

livid citrus
#

It's so much faster to develop with css/js than with xml and C# for example

latent scaffold
#

Most of the issues on Linux with Discord are exclusively because of electron

livid citrus
latent scaffold
#

and people always complain about the RAM usage

latent scaffold
livid citrus
#

I have wsl if i want to use it

latent scaffold
#

a little unfair, honestly

#

I mean doesn't everyone kind of wish Discord didn't use so much RAM

livid citrus
#

I wish but i can live with that

#

It's not that big of a deal

latent scaffold
#

idk. I feel like it'd be a lot better without Electron

livid citrus
#

No electron = No discord

#

It's not better

latent scaffold
#

I mean Discord on something other than Electron

#

Imagine if all your apps ran on electron

#

64 GB RAM would become mandatory

livid citrus
latent scaffold
#

Yes because people know that Electron is kind of dumb in some regards

livid citrus
#

I mean what's there on your pc that gould potentially use electron?

latent scaffold
#

Things like Spotify

livid citrus
#

So two apps

#

Ok

#

Same for me then

latent scaffold
#

I mean literally kind of everything that'd be cross-platform

#

I just don't happen to use many cross platform apps

livid citrus
#

What would you use instead then?..

#

Also just how much ram is "Too much"?

latent scaffold
livid citrus
#

Why you don't complain about your web browser then? πŸ˜…

#

Same thing

latent scaffold
#

because it takes so much less in comparison

livid citrus
latent scaffold
livid citrus
#

Discord takes only 250-400mb for me in windows πŸ˜‰

last mantle
livid citrus
#

Never seen it past 400mb mark

latent scaffold

livid citrus
#

And my firefox can reach like 2gb

latent scaffold
#

Microsoft Edge is amazing with RAM

livid citrus
#

With some tabs πŸ™‚

#

I would stick with firefox

#

So my discord uses like 250mb right now and yours is 1400mb

#

πŸ™‚

last mantle
#

why are apps not made in Qt πŸ˜”

livid citrus
last mantle
#

easier?

livid citrus
#

#

Really

last mantle
#

damn

livid citrus
#

Html+Css+Js is easier than Qt

graceful basin
#

Because you then have to pay a whole separate design team and programmer team to rewrite your website in C++ and maintain it

livid citrus
last mantle
#

eh you can make it in py too

livid citrus
#

There's just so many people that know web-related technologies rn

graceful basin
#

Look at the state of the android app, and remember that Qt is far more different from a website than react native

livid citrus
#

Using electron would just be cheaper

graceful basin
#

Python wouldn't be an improvement over electron

latent scaffold
#

I mean idk why Electron has to have so much overhead

graceful basin
#

That's probably it's running react

latent scaffold
#

like even Spotify for me (which I don't think is Electron but still runs on Chromium) uses a fair bit

livid citrus
graceful basin
#

Electron with pure html is generally ok

livid citrus
#

They're about the same

last mantle
#

umm

#

hmm

graceful basin
#

But that usage looks like a memory leak

livid citrus
#

Or, ok, discord website

latent scaffold
last mantle
#

what about QML tho 😎

livid citrus
latent scaffold
#

250 mb wot

livid citrus
#

For me πŸ˜‰

graceful basin
#

Browsers reuse chromium instances, but electron apps are always separate

livid citrus
#

It's the issue with linux verison, not with electron itself

last mantle
#

QML needs C++ for backend

#

but its pretty easy

graceful basin
#

Still harder than literally webdev

last mantle
#

:(

latent scaffold
graceful basin
#

Frontends are designed to be as simple and straightforward as possible

livid citrus
last mantle
#

why is flutter so tough then?

#

or is it dart that is difficult to understand

graceful basin
#

And native libraries can't really compete with the programming power behind a browser

#

Flutter was pretty ok last I tried, but it is more difficult than JS Frameworks for making websites

latent scaffold
#

Jeez, Discord in Edge uses so much less RAM

It specifies double-quotes for docstrings, but for regular literals, there is no suggestion

#

It only suggests that you're consistent with your quote character of choice, and that you should avoid escaping characters by choosing the other type for the literal
i.e. even though your project uses single-quotes for literals, "You're welcome" would be more desirable than 'You\'re welcome'

Whatcha got?

#

im from Florida. And id like to see how can i save a bit on taxes. Im 26.

#

while having my own investments here

#

im fearing higher capital gains in the future and the like so im trying to find ways to make as most as i can to invest in my future yk

ornate sundial
#

I mean the higher taxable gains tax proposal are for the mega rich

peak bolt
#

So i was seeing something. Apparently if ur below 59 1/2 and you have the roth IRA account with for 5 years. You will penalized and you will have to pay taxes

peak bolt
#

but

#

anyway.

surreal otter
#

Apparently if ur below 59 1/2 and you have the roth IRA account with for 5 years. what do you mean?

peak bolt
#

oops i didnt finish the sentence

ornate sundial
#

That’s only if you withdraw before 59.5

surreal otter
#

which is a penalty on roth / traditional

peak bolt
#

So i was seeing something. Apparently if ur below 59 1/2 and you have the roth IRA account for less than 5 years. You will penalized and you will have to pay taxes

#

yea so

ornate sundial
#

And you can actually withdraw your contributions penalty free

surreal otter
#

taxes are already paid on ROTH, it's post tax moneys

ornate sundial
#

You have to pay like a penalty fee. Government wants to encourage you to keep your money invested

solid elbow
#

You can withdraw Roth IRA contributions at any time with no tax or penalty. If you withdraw earnings from a Roth IRA, you may owe income tax and a 10% penalty.

peak bolt
#

Just a curious question. Lets say i decide to withdraw my money from that account before that qualification so that i DO get that penalty and i do get taxed on the gains that i make.

surreal otter
#

long story short no one knows what's better, roth or traditional. If you're paying lower taxes today, go ROTH, if you're paying higher taxes today, go Traditional, but I can't tell you waht taxe rates will look like in 40 years

#

so higher or lower than retirement taxes means nothing 🀷

solid elbow
#

if you withdraw the money you put in, there's no penalty or tax on it. If you withdraw money that the account made, there's a 10% penalty plus you pay income tax.

surreal otter
#

Both have their advantages, talk to an advisor

#

if you have enough money to have a legitimate concern, talk to a licensed professional πŸ™‚

peak bolt
#

thing is

#

in florida there is no income taxes...

#

so

ornate sundial
#

If you are trying to lower your taxable income now...max out your 401k, max a traditional IRA, contribute to an HSA

surreal otter
#

you don't have state or local income tax sure, but we all pay uncle sam

ornate sundial
solid elbow
#

Right, there's still federal income taxes even in states without state or municipal income taxes.

peak bolt
#

im a little confused. Are capital gains part of income taxes?

surreal otter
#

yes

#

well

#

no

solid elbow
#

they're a separate tax on a separate type of income

surreal otter
#

and yes? They're technicalyl a kind of icnome, but taxed as capital gains

ornate sundial
#

If you sell. You have to pay taxes on your gains

peak bolt
#

Right?

solid elbow
#

the money that you put into a Roth IRA, you can take out without any penalty or taxes. The money that the account earns on top of what you put in, you pay taxes and penalty on if you withdraw it early. If you wait until retirement age to withdraw those gains, you don't pay any taxes on them.

ornate sundial
#

Roth grows tax free

#

Because you are contributing already taxed $

peak bolt
#

so heres what im going with that. I have to pay capital gains in my normal account.

So my curiosity is. Well if i create a Roth IRA and withdraw my money there. I wont have to pay the higher capital gains. Id just have to pay income taxes which is 0 in florida, a smaller amount of income tax for fed, and the fee. All of that income tax would be less than what id usually be getting taxed every year on Capital Gains

#

So thats my question basically, on that withdrawal that i do earlier. Would it be taxed as capital gains. Or just normal income.

solid elbow
#

taxed every year on Capital Gains
Why would you be taxed every year on capital gains?

surreal otter
#

I'm pretty sure trying to dodge taxes is a rule 5... You cannot use a ROTH as a savings account, it is a retirement account

solid elbow
#

you pay capital gains taxes when you sell an asset. In a year where you don't sell anything, you don't pay any capital gains taxes. And if you're selling assets every year, you're saving wrong.

surreal otter
#

there are penalties for early distributions

ornate sundial
#

Are you invested in managed funds?

surreal otter
#
If you take a distribution of Roth IRA earnings before you reach age 59Β½ and before the account is five years old, the earnings may be subject to taxes and penalties. You may be able to avoid penalties (but not taxes) in the following situations:

You use the withdrawal (up to a $10,000 lifetime maximum) to pay for a first-time home purchase.
You use the withdrawal to pay for qualified education expenses.
You use the withdrawal for qualified expenses related to a birth or adoption.
You become disabled or pass away.
You use the withdrawal to pay for unreimbursed medical expenses or health insurance if you're unemployed.
The distribution is made in substantially equal periodic payments.1
Withdrawals from a Roth IRA you've had more than five years.
If you're under age 59Β½ and your Roth IRA has been open five years or more,1 your earnings will not be subject to taxes if you meet one of the following conditions:

You use the withdrawal (up to a $10,000 lifetime maximum) to pay for a first-time home purchase.
You use the withdrawal to pay for qualified education expenses.
You use the withdrawal for qualified expenses related to a birth or adoption.
You become disabled or pass away.
You use the withdrawal to pay for unreimbursed medical expenses or health insurance if you're unemployed.
The distribution is made in substantially equal periodic payments.1```
#

It's not a savings account

peak bolt
#

so i was curious too like sheesh i mean, if i am gonna be taxed for breaking the rule

#

Perhaps the tax is less than what im currently paying for capital gains

#

which would be a +1

solid elbow
#

you only pay anything for capital gains when you sell

#

I just know that eventually im gonna withdraw before im 59 lol
Why? Are you planning for early retirement?

peak bolt
#

i sell every year different assets, long term stuff, short term.

#

So yes i do pay capital gains every year

ornate sundial
#

These are all long term retirement accounts. Let them compound.

peak bolt
#

i could def use this money

surreal otter
#

Just curious, ~ how much money are you looking to put?

peak bolt
#

or what if i wanna invest in something in

peak bolt
ornate sundial
#

Loans are cheap these days

solid elbow
#

a 10% penalty is one year of compounding interest in a fund that's tracking the S&P 500, usually. On an average year, the S&P goes up by about 10%. So, paying a 10% penalty is like if you withdrew the money one year earlier.

peak bolt
#

correct

#

it's 6k for 2021 for under 50's

if you put money in a roth, let it grow

#

you can't put it back

solid elbow
# ornate sundial Loans are cheap these days

in fact - you can get a mortgage at around 2.5%, let's say. Withdrawing money from a retirement account, where it's likely to make 10% per year, in order to pay less interest on a loan that's at 2.5%, is costing you 7.5%

peak bolt
#

Also

surreal otter
#

but you'll be losing money

peak bolt
#

i could just open 2 ROTHs i believe as well

surreal otter
#

penny wise and pound foolish

you can open 2 with 3k a year, sure

#

or 6 with 1k a year!

ornate sundial
surreal otter
#

It's a 6k / taxpayer limit

#
The most you can contribute to all of your traditional and Roth IRAs is the smaller of:

For 2019, $6,000, or $7,000 if you’re age 50 or older by the end of the year; or
your taxable compensation for the year.
For 2020, $6,000, or $7,000 if you’re age 50 or older by the end of the year; or
your taxable compensation for the year.
For 2021, $6,000, or $7,000 if you’re age 50 or older by the end of the year; or
your taxable compensation for the year.```

there's no limit on the number of accounts, there's just no point to having more than 1.

surreal otter

but not to have more 6k limits, not how it works

peak bolt
# surreal otter penny wise and pound foolish

If im paying every year capital gains. When most of that money is just reinvested anyway and not spend. Id much rather put it somewhere where i wont be taxed and where WHEN I DO withdraw, the taxes the I have to pay are much less. Than if i just had capital gains in that year.

#

That is what i mean.

ornate sundial
#

You are worried about the taxes, but it’s the fees you should be looking into as well

peak bolt
#

Yea

#

but if im paying 50% capital gains.

#

yet

#

my state has 0 income tax

#

and the fed is way less

#

that fee MIGHT be less than the capital gains

surreal otter
#

But you'd get taxed AND feed...

solid elbow

If im paying every year capital gains.
Then you're doing saving fundamentally incorrectly, or you have a very complicated tax situation where you have a ton of assets and no job, in which case you should really be asking a tax advisor

The higher capital gains tax proposal is for people making $1M +

Yea, meant for healthcare, but a triple threat retirement account in disguise

Can you use that account for other stuff....?

ornate sundial

It’s comparable to a traditional IRA I believe. So no, same 59.5 restriction.

unless for healthcare

im guessing u can withdraw whenever in that case

for healthcare

anyone familiar with git subtree merge strategy? i have three repos: a, b, and c.

#

a is a subtree in b and b is a subtree in c

#

i update a and merge the changes into b. but when i go to merge the changes from b into c, b is replaced with the contents of a for some reason

#

this is how im adding each subtree:

git remote add [repo name] [repo url]
git fetch [repo name] --depth=1
git merge -s ours [repo name]/master --allow-unrelated-histories --no-commit
git read-tree -u [repo name]/master --prefix=[repo name]
git commit

and this is the command im using for updating the subtree:

git fetch [repo name] master
git merge -s subtree [repo name] master

Why is it so hard to find a good book that I don't have to search for words in the dictionary after reading each sentence lmao

#

I mean, I found the latest book of a series I followed But I'm struggling to pirate it

#

EVEN libgen doesnt have it what

harsh tundra
#

Well, you can start slow, with teenage/young adult novels. Try to make sense of the words out of the context alone, don't check it. And if you do check it, do it in English dictionary. Not English to your language. So that your mind still thinks in English

#

I know a lot of words but I don't know their translations XD

lunar shore
#

I'm literally following a teenage book actually

lunar shore
#

I sometimes even use English word in my native language lmaoo

Im teenager anyway, I enjoy teenage books more lol

harsh tundra
lunar shore

Indeed

#

But I've tried reading like , "Life, The universe and everything" which literally EVERYONE has read, and I never understood it

#

Pretty strange start, didn't get anything after reading 10 pages, shift+del

harsh tundra
#

Wait, is that hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy part?

#

It sounds like that

lunar shore
#

I think

harsh tundra
#

Good choice. But it sometimes uses strange words on purpose, so don't worry

lunar shore
#

No, I literally didn't get the context

#

like at all

harsh tundra
#

But start with first book

#

This is third

#

I just googled

lunar shore
#

Oh.

harsh tundra
#

The context of the world there matters

lunar shore
#

But someone told me it's like about aliens wanting to make a space bridge, and then um ... yk , Earth is an obstacle, they have to destroy it

#

I still didn't get the context, with that in mind

harsh tundra
#

It's a space comedy

lunar shore

they aren't extremely simple

@halcyon mauve Here's what one of the members of the Nextjs team at Vercel said in response to when someone asked if there's a point in using Next if you don't need ssg/ssr:

Just answered a similar question on Reddit - here's what I said:

  1. Batteries included (routing, linking, code splitting, babel/webpack optimizations, and more).
  2. The largest driving force for Next.js is pre-rendering for improving performance and SEO. With Google's algorithm updating in June including performance metrics, having a fast website is now not only a good user experience, but also critical for SEO.
