We spend the price of a fully-loaded Oxide rack every month on AWS.

#

Yeah, for anything that can't have an exporter onboard with it. A K8 cluster, for example, can have that agent built right in. No need for log groups.

#

Long-term (though short-term at the pace we're moving) would be to have all apps instrument an OpenTelemetry library and just fire off their telemetry data to [some endpoint here] which would route it to [vendor of the year here]

#

Otel is wonderful.

#

But we still need the two other paths for apps that can't implement an otel solution. So, in my head, my preference in order would be

  1. Send the logs/metrics via Otel to a common collector
  2. Have an agent deployed to handle the collection from stdout
  3. Subscribe a collector to log groups (again collecting stdout)

#

Holy Sweet Laser-Jesus, indentation isn't meaningful in the ssh_config file syntax?

#

It's purely for readability aaaaahh

#

The `[Match] canonical` keyword matches only when the configuration file is being re-parsed after hostname canonicalization (see the CanonicalizeHostname option). This may be useful to specify conditions that work with canonical host names only.

The `[Match] final` keyword requests that the configuration be re-parsed (regardless of whether CanonicalizeHostname is enabled), and matches only during this final pass. If CanonicalizeHostname is enabled, then canonical and final match during the same pass.``` please come, sweet embrace of death

Oh hey, I think I like this better than oauth2-proxy... https://www.pomerium.com/docs

Pomerium is an open source identity-aware proxy built around the principles of BeyondCorp and zero trust. It secures your internal applications, servers, services, and workloads by continually verifying a user's identity, device state, and request context before granting access.

Mentally it can be

#

I used to do it on purpose all the time as a teenager

#

I got really got at it

#

Then one day I got stuck and couldn't wake up

#

Eventually busy determined that I had died and that the afterlife was just a dream

#

Waking up after spending a lot of time pondering on the fact that I was dead was...a trip

#

I have never intentionally entered a lucid dream since. And the one time I realized I was in a dream afterwards I also was unable to wake up intentionally AND was being chased by some relentless monster

glossy niche
#

Nah that's different. I've had that too. Sleep paralysis you're awake but can't move and don't have control over the dream that's invading the real world

#

The couple of times that happened I wasn't particularly bothered by it

green pelican
#

i cant imagine there is much of a difference though

#

ive been "stuck"in dreams too

uneven pine
#

I found the difference to be quite extreme

#

Apples to oranges

#

Sleep paralysis: I can't move and there's a demon breathing on my neck behind me but I'm conscious and aware of my room around me

#

Stuck in a lucid dream: I've died. I didn't tell my loved ones I loved them enough. This is what the afterlife is? So there really is no higher power. Interesting. This void is weird. Man I'm going to have a lot of time to resent my entire life. I really don't mind being dead I guess.

#

I went through a pretty wild emotional rollercoaster that night

#

I was also still a teenager, in a very bad place in life. It didn't help

timid latch
#

I sometimes have like not sleep paralysis, because I am able to move fine, but like some dream like delusion while waking up. not like a hallucination, I actually have my eyes closed. but like just my brain is convinced it has to do something before I am allowed to wake up, naturally its some dream nonsense, like I think the last time I couldnt manage to get out of bed until I had mentally beaten a angry birds level.
And I was fully convinced it was a thing I had to do, I was literally thinking "god isnt it annoying how everyone has to do this, who thought this was a good idea"

uneven pine
#

Lmaooo that's crazy

#

I one time had a dream about aliens that bled into the waking world for like 10 minutes

muted pebble
#

dreams are wild. I have a friend who swears he went to sleep one night. woke up in the bed as another
person living a different life in the dream. Lived out this "dream life" for like two weeks.
Went to sleep one night in the dream and when he woke up he was back in his bed in his
normal life.

he said while in the dream he had no clue it was a dream. it was as real as waking life.

muted pebble
tropic ore
muted pebble
#

because if you're not even aware that you're dreaming then what is there to "get out of*?

tropic ore
#

if i was stuck and well aware, that's scary
if i woke up from a dream that felt like days or weeks in some other reality, aware or not, that would be scary too

muted pebble
#

how old are you if I may?

tropic ore
#

muted pebble
#

you're still very young. If you wanna experience lucidity (which can be a frightening experience) then just meditating about it before falling asleep can bring on such an experience.

Research "lucid dream experiences/how to become lucid in dreams" if you're interested.

#

"meditating" in this sense implies putting more energy/attention into lucidity

#

than just "thinking" about it

#

I may think "i'm gonna tie my shoe" and I tie my shoe in 2 seconds.
but If I meditate on tying my shoe then I could think about this for 10 minutes and
envision the process/steps needed to tie the laces. Going through mental images the
entire time. lol

There’s this show from the 1950’s. I forgot the name of it but I think the episode is called “The Lonely”. A man gets sent to an astroid and he felt lonely. So a spaceship sent him a robot to keep him company.

He falls in the love with the robot, || the captain comes back to the astroid and shoots the robot in her face ||

The episode is philosophical to me because the episode does invoke emotions but then again it’s a man made machine and not a human being

I feel like the question posed here is about something very similar to anthropomorphism, and there seems to be quite a lot of research into that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropomorphism#Foundational_research

Modern psychologists generally characterize anthropomorphism as a cognitive bias. That is, anthropomorphism is a cognitive process by which people use their schemas about other humans as a basis for inferring the properties of non-human entities in order to make efficient judgements about the environment, even if those inferences are not always accurate.[2] Schemas about humans are used as the basis because this knowledge is acquired early in life, is more detailed than knowledge about non-human entities, and is more readily accessible in memory.[78] Anthropomorphism can also function as a strategy to cope with loneliness when other human connections are not available.[79]

I didn't know what the term was, but I knew the description, so I searched by that description and apparently wound up at the wrong term, though it's not thaaaat far from it
the actual position I might have wanted to reference instead of hylopathism is panpsychism

#

oh and
if I do hear a word and use it everywhere, that's called practice, meaning I learn more (about it) (hopefully)

sharp jasper
#

I don't think anthropomorphism means treating something as if it were a human, necessarily, but imputing human-like traits to it, which may include traits that humans share with animals.

so, imagining that your printer is alive (and probably pissed at you) can be considered anthropomorphism, as life is a human trait, despite that other creatures also experience life.

US is called 1st world country only because US was the one who made those classifiers during cold war. 1st world was US and their allies, 2nd world was Soviet Union and their allied. 3rd world were all those countries that didn't matter.

But socially? US is pretty dystopian. Lack of universal healthcare and the cost of private healthcare. Cost of education. The inequalities in the public education system. Being the first on number of imprisoned people per capita - and the fact that a lot of prisons are privately owned...

I have a friend who loves traveling. And has MD parent.
When going to the US, their doctor parent told them that if anything happens, just patch yourself enough to get back. Because even a broken bone would end up with high bill
