Following some maintenance a few hours ago, bot and server votes for April were accidentally wiped. Unfortunately, since votes reset on Monday anyway, we cannot restore your votes from April over the weekend.

You won't get your full vote credits from April because of this. However, as compensation, you can claim your voting credits from March a second time now (until Monday).

Your monthly votes will wipe again (normal April wipe) on May 1st (<t:1682899200:R>).

<@&968940194386571274> @timid sinew Some more info here - been trying to reset the vote credits for the past 4 hours or so.

There was a cache that is used to hold the votes before they reset that blew up, as a result, 120+GB of caching data had to be either digged through, or I had to reset it to keep the site up
I opted to reset it because I had a backup
Loading back in the votes would take additional day or so, which would create a lot of downtime since Redis (which is used to hold the vote cache) is single-threaded
So I opted for a reset

The good news is that as a result, I've been able to debug the site stability with a lot less data to deal with, and I'm making a ton of progress.

My apologies!

Tldr there should never be a 120+GB cache, should have been max 5GB or so, so need to figure that one out

We're currently getting a lot of reports of users experiencing longer-than-normal load times and getting Cloudflare gateway time-out errors. We have an engineer looking into this issue now!

Users are now getting rate limited very quickly (cloudflare error 1015) - we're aware of this and trying to resolve that and the root problem as well! Hey everyone, time for another update - it's been an exciting day for us, we've had multiple DDoS attacks with no impacts to the systems. Attackers were hitting from countries with tons of requests where Cloudflare did not yet have our pages in the cache. We set up a bucket that stores the generated web pages as static objects that are served first, before going back to origin, and it's made the site significantly faster + more stable. By getting rid of servers, we were able to remove most of the code from the codebase that was causing a lot of the slowdowns, because servers was essentially slapped onto the botlist when it was developed, and there are signifciantly more servers than bots, so decisions were made that simply did not scale. Such as using MongoDB as a database.

We also migrated the MongoDB database to Atlas so it autoscales - eliminating the last single point of failure in the stack.

I suspect we will still see some things make it through. But overall, the site is much more stable than it's ever been and we're excited about it.

topgg_ico_announcement Resolved root cause of recent api outages

Figured I'd share this here since it might be a point of interest. I've taken a deep look into the issue that happened today and yesterday related to the api outages, and we've found the root issue. It seems our cloud provider would attempt to scale down the service at a certain threshold, but then afterwards the load would instantly overwhelm the machine, causing it to force scale up.

We've applied the appropriate changes and this shouldn't happen again. Furthermore, we will also apply some query optimizations soon, which will further alleviate the lag on the api!

As top.gg grows, we have been working to streamline our rules and policies to be more consistent. Our continued stance of not moderating text-based content in APIs has proved to be in contradiction to our limitation of Urban Dictionary commands being limited to NSFW channels. As a result of that, we've decided to remove the rule of requiring Urban Dictionary to be limited to NSFW channels.

Regardless, as are with all APIs, you should take responsibility and decide accordingly in your own discretion what content you believe is well suited for channel ratings.

Bots that have yet to be tested as of this message (24th October 2020) will follow this policy update. Bots that have already been declined or removed prior this message will not be given priority in queue due to our current restrictions; we apologise for the inconvenience caused.

We understand that because of this rule, we've had a lot of bots that got declined or was deleted from the site accordingly as a result of it and sincerely apologise for any issues this may have caused.

dblMod Rule Clarifications for Descriptions and Voting

It has come to our attention that a lot of developers seem to be confused in regards to what we classify as spam or junk previously in our public rules. Because of this, we've decided to clarify slightly in rules further and have since then edited #rules-and-info to match our internal policy guidelines.

We do not allow completely irrelevant descriptions (not limited to, but examples could be - copypasta, lorem ipsum text, or nonsensical descriptions of that nature) on bot pages.

Secondly, we've come across bots that send out vote reminders to their users but do not specify how to unsubscribe - which causes unsolicited or unwanted advertisements. Because of this we've added a rule 15 under bot requirements which prevents this.

online DSL Issues Fixed
Sorry for the long wait folks, you should now be able to see and manage ALL servers you're an administrator in (not just the ones that have DSL added). We've had to change up the way we do things quite a bit for this and it's probably going to require you to logout and log back in to be able to see servers in your profile page again, you'll automatically get logged out if this is necessary for you when visiting your profile page.

Due to the restrictions Discord put on DSL where we can't see members and bots of servers. The feature that let us detect bots in your servers and link them to DBL has stopped working, we'll be replacing it with a different system in the near future.

Now that servers you moderate are directly visible for you without DSL bot, you might experience deleted servers coming back after visiting your profile page. If you don't want this, you can simply kick DSL bot to make your server page inaccessible on top.gg.

dblMod Rule Clarification for Discussion of Site Competitors

With the recent controversial update, we understand that developers, server owners and our users have a lot of feedback to provide. Because of this, we realised that the lack of coherence and clarity in our general ethic of mentioning of bot list (or server list) competitors in chat channels have made it hard for community members to provide constructive feedback. The last thing we'd like is to limit discussions of this nature - and hence, we'd like to clarify our guideline.

From this point onwards, we'd like to allow constructive comparison of top.gg with other competitors, but still continue to enforce the rule of no advertising. To draw a clearer line, something on the lines of "Hi, please check out botlist XYZ" would still be considered as advertising; whereas "in botlist ABC, they don't have a ... system like in top.gg, so I prefer using that" would be okay (as it falls under constructive comparison and feedback).

We don't want to limit conversations like this where the team can continually learn about what our audience thinks, and will continue to streamline our rules to be consistent with that. If you have any questions or feedback, we're more than happy to listen; and we're thankful of how vocal the community has been about their opinions on recent site changes.

💬 Response to Video Ads’ Feedback

Hey all, over the last week we've received a lot of feedback when it comes to our latest update and we've been reading every single post, chat message, tweet, Reddit thread, and more! Let’s talk about the major elephants in the room, and how we've responded to it.

Require Disabling of AdBlock

We received a lot of feedback that blocking adblockers is not a great idea and in retrospective, I do agree on this matter, it was a step too far from our side and we've added a button to continue without AdBlock.

Privacy Issues

A lot of users also found it very problematic that with the forced AdBlock, they would get tracked by a handful of trackers. While this was an age-old problem way before our time, we've put an extra-large effort to remove the ones that we could validate that we were not using anymore. Hopefully, you can see a lot fewer trackers on your side now.

Complicated Ad Flow

A large problem for users was how rocky the launch was and how much extra time it took to vote. While the first issue was resolved after the initial few hours, we did try to improve the flow for users with ads on as much as we could. We removed the need to click on the vote button for the advertisement to appear, which allowed the ad to start playing right away as the user loaded up the site, saving you around an average of 2 seconds.

Auction Credits

One large topic that was brought up is the confusion in regards to our credit rewards and how it was portrayed to help creators. Whilst initially we believed that it would give creators more resources to grow, it was understandably not received as such - smaller creators felt a bit discouraged with the ad credit rate seemingly benefitting larger bot developers. We did originally take this into account, hence the “15$ credit for your first 100 monthly votes” initiative, however, it is important to mention that we plan on experimenting this from month to month until we have a near-perfect balance.

I understand that these changes were frustrating for everyone, but for the future, I do want to ask you to not attack other team members, volunteers, or community members. Hey folks, based on the feedback we got from you after our last few changes, we realized we need to create a healthier conversation between top.gg and its users by communicating planned changes that affect your experience on the site both as creators and users. I'm going to try to make sure we do a better job at this from now on.

As a part of the latest changes we're looking at, we want to allow creators to be able to optionally force themes on their bot pages to make it easier to write highly customized CSS without having to worry about which theme the user has enabled. I'm sure you've seen some of these bots on top.gg and either went "wow that's an amazing page" or "huh why does it look so weir- oh I think I'm supposed to be on dark theme". We think this would be useful for developers of bots who already try to "force" a theme on their page but have to deal with either spending a bunch of time testing their site on both themes or have their page end up looking completely broken despite all the time they put into making it more a e s t h e t i c. Unfortunately this change comes with a drawback of making your experience on the site as a user more inconsistent. If the creator of beepboopbot really likes light theme they would be able to blind you more easily. We'd love to hear what you think about this.

Hi creators, I have some big changes I'm very excited to announce to you. If you go to your bot page right now and don't have custom css on it, you'll see that your bot pages are fixed! If you go to your bot page and do have custom css, you might see that it is broken... We've redesigned the page layout with a sidebar and changed the CSS to be more consistent and removed a lot of the artifacts from the old design of the site that were confusing. This means getting fewer 🤨s when going into inspect element and seeing things like:

and instead seeing classes that are more like

We made the CSS architecture of the bot page follow BEM methodology to make things more predictable and consistent for you. If this naming schema seems odd, I highly recommend checking out http://getbem.com/naming/ to get a better feel for what to expect. Maybe you might even end up using it in your personal projects.

Hope you can bear with me and if you have questions on what you can expect from the new css layout, I'll explain the gist of it below.

We've also started to include extra CSS variables you can use to create a theme-aware design. We encourage bot developers to create pages that support both light and dark theme, but if you would like to only support one theme you can now do that by changing the Forced Theme settings.

If you do want to support multiple themes, you can now use variables like --text and --background. We have 2 main modifiers for these -secondary and -tertiary. You can combine base classes with modifiers to use variables like color: var(--text-tertiary) or background: var(--background-secondary). These css variables are edited when users switch themes. If you would like to override our existing variable definitions for them, you can use

DSL edits should be working again, if you were having problems with it earlier please try again and ping me in #support if it still doesn't work for you.

If you were previously experiencing problems with voting it was because of a change we recently rolled that prevents people from voting for the same bot/server on multiple accounts in order to make the voting system more fair for everyone. The vote page has been updated to reflect that change and you'll be notified if that's the issue you're experiencing. If you're still getting "unknown" errors while voting, you can ping me about that in #support with a screenshot of your vote page.

Our profile pages are experiencing high latency, we've figured out that it seems to be a connectivity issue between our webserver nodes and our api.

Hey all, from today on, we will be starting to collect 100% anonymous usage data. The goal of this is for us to realize what parts of our app is being used the most, and how we can move forward in creating value for the most users with future updates! I wanted to make this announcement because I do want to let you guys know, we are continued to push forward transparency on the why we start doing these things, and let you guys trust in our decisions for the long term.

We have made sure beforehand that everything we track is not related to your personal data, and the data is fully GDPR compliant, meaning we will delete your existence on the site and metrics on demand.

What is being tracked then?
We started tracking actions such as whether someone used the search bar to find a bot. Whether someone found the bot on a tag, or the frontpage. Very abstract things like this.

I, again, want to re-iterate that attempting to use a community outside of our discord server to your favor (e.g. asking your support server to vote) may lead to the exclusion of your bots from current and future polls.

dbl Bot page changes
Hi gamers,

I wanted to give you all a heads up on what we're planning on doing with bot pages. Some of you may have heard that we have a redesign coming up that we plan on releasing by the start of next month which involves all your favorite changes, the bot and server pages. The bad news is if you have custom css that affects elements outside of your own html, it might stop working after the update. The good news is we will be giving you about 2 weeks worth of heads up before we roll out these changes, with links to mobile and desktop versions of the html/css on codesandbox.io for you to test your designs against. Afterwards, you will have about a month of extra time to opt out of the new design if needed to make sure your css is working as you expect without breaking changes on the new website. Once that period ends, we will force everyone to use our beautiful new design to make sure everyone is having the same experience.

We expect this to be the last major breaking change for bot pages and if we do end up making major changes again, we'll make sure to use this method again to give you enough time to fix things.

dbl Vote Webhook Rewrite

Hey all, your favorite backend developer here. I've taken some time and completely rewritten the vote webhook from scratch which should finally fix following known issues

webhook does GET requests without body & authentication header sometimes
broken retries
randomly dropping votes at times

This rewrite also is already running alongside with the old version in production to stress test it and see how it performs under production load, I've already fixed the couple of last issue which i found and after monitoring it for quite some time it seems to perform good lori_yay

Looking at the difference between the old and new version I've acknowledged some key differences people should be aware of

does now retry up to 10 times (exponential, initial delay is 1 second and increases by 2 every time)
retries network errors and 5xx status code with above described schema
expects a response code in the 2xx http status code range (for people not knowing what these are https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HTTP_status_codes)
does not retry 4xx codes as these are user errors (400/404 for the most part)
default timeout is set to 5 seconds
user-agent header is now http spec conform (name/version)

It's planned to fully roll out the new version tomorrow after we are sure that it works without issues, if you encounter any issues related to this change feel free to contact me in the support channel (#support) :)

starry Multi language support update
Do you speak multiple languages and want to help bring Top.gg to your own country? We're going to be slowly rolling out internationalization this week and refining translations the weeks after and we need your help making sure the site is translated and ready to be international. For the time being we're only looking to translate the following languages which represent the languages spoken by users connecting from countries that make up for the most traffic on our site

🇫🇷 French
🇩🇪 German
🇮🇳 Hindi
🇵🇱 Polish
🇧🇷 Portuguese (yes I know that's not a flag of Portugal)

We saw incredible interest in translations over the past 2 weeks, I'm very grateful for all the translations you've submitted since then. I'm also happy to announce we're slowly starting to roll out translations to beta starting with Turkish (undoubtedly the second most popular language on the site and on this server after English). You should be able to check it out by hovering over the cog icon in the Navbar to reveal the language selections.

We will be releasing new languages on the site one by one in order to not overwhelm googlebot with literally 1 million new pages all at once. The order we will follow is based on the traffic we see for each language, currently that order is as follows:
Turkish -> Portuguese -> French -> German -> Spanish -> Filipino -> Russian -> Hindi

We added the email scope to our login route in order to better link your accounts in the future. We're adding more ways to log into your account, on top of that we are in the works of improving our ToS and privacy policy, it is required to notify everyone using the site the best way possible, which we believe this will help with.

Hey all, custom tags finally fully rolled out to all of Top.gg, server owners can now use any tag, (and use localized tags in beta) to market your server.

Other than that, the edit dashboard for servers also received a style update similar to the other dashboard changes.

And ofcourse a few fixes: vote rewards now are working properly again for everyone, and creating invites is also working well again. Make sure to check your role settings and check your bot's permissions if this does not work.

🤖 Better voting for everyone

We've completely removed our dependence on captchas, and all captchas for voting are completely gone in favor for our own verification system! This system is brand new, so please let us know if you come across any issues, we'd love to help you fix your issues and create a more robust experience.

💡 dsl DSL dark mode and improvements

We added dark mode (finally) to DSL! Now all parts of our site have the same feel when you use dark or light mode. This syncs up with beta aswell.

🗨️🌐 More languages available in beta

We support Hindi, German, and French in beta now! Totalling our translated language count to 5. And more to come topggSmile

If you were experiencing problems voting, it should be back to normal for all users now.

We rolled back the slider changes temporarily (or permanently, we'll see). It looks like we need to do more testing across different browsers to make sure we don't break the voting flow. Also realized it's a big accessibility issue for users who rely on screen readers which is something we definitely want to make sure we're mindful of when rolling out new changes. You might see the slider make a comeback as a more controlled experiment for a small percentage of users in the future, with an alternative for users who rely on accessibility tools like screen readers irenenotes2

dblMod Moderator Raid Alerts

Hey all, we've recently noticed that our Moderation team gets a lot of pings that have been for support or other reasons. We previously kept the role mentionable to allow users to easily get our Moderation team notified when any raids occur. However the name of the role has caused some confusion to users. Because of this we've decided to create the <@&868548511279480893> role which shall be used when the server gets raided which requires numerous moderators to assist in resolving the incident.

Please note that this is a change that is being tested and may be changed once again depending on the outcome.

Looks like we had problems with our connection pool similar to the one from a few months ago that caused an hour+ of downtime. We switched DB providers as a result of issues last time this happened so we're getting in touch with digitalocean to figure out what's going on. We'll be monitoring things but it seems like majority of the issues should be fixed now or getting fixed in the next few minutes.

We've redesigned our pages to fit with the new beta feel of the site and fixed up some of the issues with our old pages, with our bot page we've removed all deprecated features including your development library and co-owners which avoids issues where you're unable to edit your owners.

We've also changed up the confusing flow of our servers page and instead with just a few clicks you can get your server listed on our site without having to read a page full of instructions topggGuns

In order to transfer a bot or server (entity) page, the "Danger Zone" in the entity /edit page has been removed. Instead, the feature of moving entities to the "Bot Info" section. Here, you will be able to move your bot to a team if applicable. In order to transfer an entity's ownership to someone else, a team must be used. We're working on streamlining the process to make it a bit easier to access for everyone, and improve user experience.

Hi! Regarding the vote credits, we have restored it for those who haven't claimed their credits yet.

If you redeemed your credits before the 8th, you should have been unaffected (you would've gotten the full value)
If you redeemed it between 8th (the day it broke) until now, we can't restore those credits. We've looked into the amount of people this has affected though, and have reached out to those who have a huge amount affected.
If you didn't redeem it after the 8th, and redeem it now, you will be able to redeem the full amount now.

This post is to address the recent changes regarding the ability to list servers to the site.

In the past, it was possible to list servers you have administrator / manage guild permissions in. However, this was recently changed so that only server owners can list the servers directly, which caused a little confusion. We decided to remove this due to the unreliable nature of permission checks. fastnod

Once added, you can transfer it to a team and add specific members to it to allow them to access different things in different roles. Added a warning on new auctions product creation if the user selects an image that is too large (>64kb) instead of timing out. It doesn’t let them upload it at all anymore.
Working on internal tools for the support team, specifically this week adding some easier ways to transfer auctions credits and some other miscellaneous improvements.
Bot deletions and ban/unban logs get posted in #mod-logs again now
Other Luca improvements
Fixed webhook in logs to show new logo
Mature-marked servers are now not able to bid in auctions
Resolved issue regarding votes not going through when session cookie times out
Users avatars show up in auctions again
Removal of locked servers from search results + remove the ability to publicly view such servers

Hey all, we made a couple changes to auctions to make life a little easier jiupogg

Discord notification are working again. These notifications have a 2 hour cooldown as usual.
Automations tab removed since it was never implemented for CPM auctions in the first place and was causing confusion.
Added the ability to lower your bid budget under some restrictions:
- You must increase your bid CPM (the left value) proportionally to the % you're decreasing your budget (the right value).
- If you're lowering your bid budget, you cannot increase your bid CPM over 20%+ of the auctions leader. This is to prevent people from resetting their bids and bouncing out of auctions when competing against others by setting it to something like $5000 @ $1.
- You can lower your budget freely if you are the only person who has a bid in a specific auction spot.

If you're an upbidding andy and don't lower your bid limit, this shouldn't affect your existing workflow. These restrictions only apply for cases where users need to adjust their budget when increasing bid CPM to give them more flexibility.

Increase in category count: we can now add up to 12 tags/categories instead of just 6 for entity pages!
Fixed the profile card avatar and name sizing being weird in the bot edit page.
Discovery banner widget was broken and is now hidden.
The server and bot deletion page now has an updated look and confirmation cohesive to the rest of the site.
Add bot flow error message was previously not descriptive when the application was not found. Better error messaging, yay
Removed the auctions automations that was showing in the sidebar on some pages
Fixed the bug for server previews showing that their "server wasn't approved yet". Your server shouldn't need approval.
Fixed the add server flow, where when you provide the wrong server invite code in the adding time, it doesn't flag an issue but it does in the edit page. More descriptive error messaging!
Fixed clicking on one of the popular categories should now highlight the tag in the filters.
Fixed the redirect after voting whilst in other spaces
Fixed redirects in the "show more" button
Fixed "Remind Me" to work in other spaces after voting
Add advertising in the navigation in other spaces
Fixed when going back from entity pages, it prevents it from having an empty list
Search hints were broken on the Discord space for every tag
Ensured that in other spaces, it won't allow you to add over 12 tags
Fixing the entity's /edit page to not throw 500s when being transferred to a team
When a user fails to pay for an ad during the round 1 / 2 periods, their ad will not end up being promoted via retroactive means.
When logging out, the site shouldn't still show as if you're logged in.
Fixed some bugs with team permissions causing team admins to not be able to remove themselves from the team
Fixed duplicate and missing entities across spaces

New Guideline:
Multiple bots that are created using the same or very similar code should not be submitted individually. Instead, group them together in your main bot's help command or website page.

An example of this would be would be multiple music bots running on the same code, intended to extend functionality of joining multiple VCs via multiple applications.
Another example would be bots that run on the same code, with only one API/endpoint change for different functionalities.

We're heading into a new season - which means that Daylight savings are here to mess with the clocks again. For a lot of locations, that means you will be losing an hour i.e. your clocks will be springing forwards by one hour. However, our Auctions does not follow Daylight Savings, which means Auctions might be ending an hour later than normal for you.

Here's a short-ish list of some of the countries that are affected that I'll name:
s_dot Daylight savings for US and Canada will begin at 5:00AM EST on March 13th (Sunday) and end on November 6th (Sunday)
s_dot Daylight savings for Europe will begin at 1:00am CET on March 27th (Sunday) and end on October 30 (Sunday)
s_dot Most countries in Oceania does not have daylight savings. This includes Australia.
s_dot Other countries: please research on your own! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time_by_country

This means for the next week or two, you might find auctions to be ending one hour later than usual according to your clock. The countdown on our site is accurate, and it will always end at 7PM UTC Monday, with a 12 hour payment deadline, followed by ads going live at 7PM UTC Tuesday.

Due to the site being slow during the end of auctions, we've extended auctions by an hour. It will end at 9:10PM UTC instead (and up til 11PM UTC if there are bids really close to the end date causing it to extend in 2 min increments).

If you've paid already, you will get an auto-refund in the next couple hours in credit (we're working on this) saying that you got a refund for site downtime.

During the beginning of this auctions cycle, we were alerted by a community member that there was a vulnerability being shared outside of Top.gg which was inflating impressions. This seemed to be an attempt to devalue impressions especially for larger bots and products. Our team promptly shipped a fix within hours of discovering the issue. We’ve also reset the impression counters for everyone during the affected period, to ensure customers receive legitimate impressions that they paid for.

Auctions Auto-Refund Issue

Last Wednesday, we discovered an issue relating to automatic refunds. We found out that users were getting refunds even when they were not supposed to (i.e. getting free credit). Some users were abusing this exploit - these users have now been removed of access in auctions. This bug has now been fixed and should give refunds accurately. Users with remaining credit that was refunded inaccurately have been removed of excess credit.

Hey <@&556148669242408971> - me again TSwave we had an issue unexpectedly caused by us extending the auctions payment window. This caused your advertisements to go live but you were issued a refund as if they did not. We have removed all the accidental refunds and extra impressions requests.

All advertisements will go live and show as normal! This was just an issue with issueing refunds that shouldn't have been issued.
