i'm sure it's headed there, i just don't personally see it yet. there's not enough in this alpha to get a full picture of what this game could be

but it's entirely dismissive and/or reductive to claim that it has no point to exist, stuff already being done on the game just isn't possible to have in drg either because it would break game balance or change too much about drg itself
it was gonna be an expansion but they thought to themselves what if they stopped working within drg's limitations and now we have rogue core

Played through the whole mission and then the boss was nowhere to be found on the final stage. Audio was an issue but I fixed it either by going to the second stage or changing it so Omega doesn't take priority. After all my teammates passed, I was stuck looking at absent bodies for a full minute before I got the failure screen. Having fun though.
Was not able to take screenshots for some reason either so, we'll see what happens.
Is it "easy" to implement different types of encounters in the future? Right now as I understand there's only one type of encounter?

When rifts spawned inside the facilities they surrounded them with barrier. Nothing gets in, nothing gets out. Unless you are reclaimer that is.

i think i've lost hope this game will be anything good. i no longer have faith that the devs actually understand what was fun about DRG. too many random bad design decisions. good luck with playtests i guess, but the more i play this game the less i want to buy it. later

no offence but it feels like half the time someone does this entire full "this is terrible and will never ever be even remotely good" dismissal it's usually over aspects of the game that make it a roguelike in the first place
too bad they left because I'm 95% sure it boiled down to "game too hard and I don't like the timer"

one is a reasonable criticism and definitely going to cause a massive wave of complaints and issues when the game hits early access, and the other is skill issue

it's pretty unique, for starter, and I like that a lot
i really don't see a way early access goes where GSG doesn't eventually concede that there are flaws about it they need to fix

That's not quite how I see it.
I don't think the system is particularly flawed, but people are. And because this is a "trust" system, it will be impacted by these flaws.
But playing any game also revolve around this social contract, this isn't a thing inherent to DRG and RC.
Toxic people in games are everywhere. You're not gonna escape them. Trying to change a system toward something less interesting just because you're scared people might ruin it is quite limiting - and not a good solution IMO.

That's only because you're convinced it's gonna go wrong every time, except you can't be sure of that.
Trying to manage bad actors has never really been prime candidate for a feature in non-competitive games, and I can see why RC might not see any changes over what DRG did

It's a treadmill of work for the devs. You forbid people from doing one thing and they will hop onto the next thing that can be exploited.
You can try to solve the issue, and the devs are trying to do that, but not by limiting players and rather through encouraging co-operation.

the problem is that the game expects cooperation in a vague "roleplay" way. It's not required, you can play the game, while ignoring your teammates entirely in what they need/want for upgrades, with absolutely zero issue
its not even a matter of toxic people imo. goodwilled people have no real reason to let other people have upgrades that they need/want
I think that's an inherent problem with any co-op game tbh. Especially since there are very varying levels of skill. It's not a problem that can be completely solved unless you're massively going to shift the game.
This is particularly true for roguelites where individual power can go through the roof.
I guess one of the ways to fix that would be to make the game incredibly hard - but who's gonna enjoy that ?
The other way is to have better events that revolve around co-operation - and that's a work in progress.

because that's an added layer of difficulty for design
I just really dont like the idea of shrugging it off as some unsolvable issue that everyone just has to deal with. With either "toxic people will do whatever" (does not matter, normal, nice players have every reason to steal upgrades from players and act identically to toxic players) or "its an unavoidable problem of coop" (how? It's harder for me to refute this because RC is so unique, but it feels like a dismissal)
I feel like they should at least add one more upgrade option across the board, and maybe scrap the rarity system visually
Don't line up upgrades as "ignore your team-mates, grab this no matter what"
Playing Risk of Rain 2 with randos for me was kinda meh because of similar things, so I stopped playing with em. But I wouldn't change the system at all because it was really fun with my friends with how it was set up.
I mean, it's partially handled by you being sometimes the first to pick, and the other times last to pick a thing. Is that not how it works in the Closed Alpha - I'm sorry for being ignorant, I haven't played it/watched video material about it - but that's the impression I got from watching a smidge of gameplay from a couple of months ago, and I could be wrong.
You can't really create a system where everyone is happy without sacrificing something in turn, be it complexity or the stakes of creating situations in which you want to emphasize that you'd really like to get XYZ.
I'm not shrugging it off. But I'd rather prefer we focus on solutions encouraging people to co-operate rather than changing systems because of the fear of what might happen.

I think RoR2 is a perfect example of a multiplayer PvE game that does not encourage co-op - and is in fact quite hostile toward the idea.
I think the dopamine could be the realisation of knowing what an upgrade could do for you, instead

there are at least two solutions I can see to this problem
- a "personal" upgrade that is only available to you. It's one solution, although it comes with problems of its own.
- upgrades getting more power if there are synergies between them - though that's a tough thing to balance, I think it might be the better one
2a) could be geared toward having upgrades give you less power if there is no synergy but I think a positive thing instead of a malus would go a better way
Also I'm positive that over time - as dedicated people get better at understanding the game - people will develop generic strategy guides that will be at least partially adopted by the community, including "etiquette" guides for say, which class/type of player may want what <XYZ thing>, or people with X type boons might want Y type boons in the future to make their build go live/perform on par with builds <ZYX>.
You will meet people not following the strategy once in a while - you can't really mitigate that risk fully. You can "vaccinate" people to these ideas and meet, and befriend people that propagate them.
The people that had been in for a while did develop etiquette and and resisted the shiny to think if the upgrade is better in a different classes hands
2 is certainly the more interesting
there definitely will be a period of chaos before things get better

Its a unique system that for sure has a warming period especially with new people in the pool again
And it's wishful thinking, I know, but being in several communities that were theory-crafting spoken guides on how to succeed frequently/consistently, or just applying them in game for people to witness, is not that unrealistic and will have some impact on what and how people will adapt to the systems.
Despite that, it made me and my friend's cooperative usage of it way more interesting and fun.

Itβs somewhat unlikely that RC will ever have PvP though, considering the devsβ track record.

My issue here is that I'm very bad at aiming, and I usually rely on area damage weapons in fps games. Skill issue pretty much. I'll get better as I play more

there are no bugs in Rogue Core other than lootbugs and the occasional bulk detonator event
we fight the core spawn there, you might know them from the core stone event in DRG

Game is quite focused on hitting weakpoints. Once you do then ammo is not a problem. You can also equip ammo enhancements

what if, when you get common/uncommon upgrades in a level, their effects get multiplied at the end of the stage* based on how much time you have left?
*Only for the stage you got them from; i.e. get an upgrade on Stage 1, leave Stage 1 quickly to get up to 1.5x the effects.
This could also be dictated by "How soon did you FIND the exit", which gives a back-and-forth dynamic:
- Spread out as a team to find and secure the exit?
- Once you're there, how far do you go back for all the optional objectives you saw along the way?
- Ask one person to go fetch the exit while eveyone else does objectives? (Or try to be that person and carry the entire team's power levels)
I haven't played Rogue Core yet, I just got these ideas on a whim.

Thought about this a bit more, it might be a cool idea to have a modifier or some kind of mechanic around your luck being marginally better each level you go down so you'd be incentivised to risk not taking your level ups in the moment and saving them for a later floor for better upgrades
Not too much so you don't ever use the levels until the last moment but it would give a nice risk/reward if you have a level up at the end of a mission
Even hitting all shots on weak spots ammo is still heavily lacking in solo

It could be a "grunt fantasy" thing, but for that case I'd want to make the enemies have some kind of special behavior for when they're specifically that tanky and scary. Half-taunting, half-"declaring how they can push forwards at you despite being shot"
Nailing home the fact they're horror enemies requires a little bit of extra SPECTACLE, because the guns are canonically better tech than what we get as "surface" Miners in DRG.
That sounds amazing actually, for allowing veterans to express their skills in early-to-mid stages. Or even better, allow them to give their upgrades to other players and insist they'll pick up later upgrades.
...Actually, the ability to trade upgrades with each other would make the game a lot more interesting. Potential to be toxic, yeah, kinda, but also allowing you some freedom with upgrade management.

It may very well be the norm for games you like to play, but like pounce said, it is absolutely not the norm across the board. It is perfectly fine for a game to not get constant or even regular updates and cosmetic or microtransaction pushes. Most games are not live service games, and DRG is not one either. The fact that we're getting anything at all 6-8 years in (depending on if you count the public alpha or not) is already pretty impressive, and the game is quite honestly content complete as it is.
Then they either need to go full on into newer games like rogue core or focus mainly on drg

Its not too difficult with others, D3 is reasonably difficult solo
Nimble 4 was the game changer for me though, just being able to resupply / complete events and elevator button quickly ends up being critical when enemies are constantly attacking you

And I don't expect any special rewards for being chosen randomly by devs. If it was like in DRG that Early Access that they reward those few for their trust then sure but since RC is going to have more people playing from the get go then there should be no reward.

On high settings I get 160 on Drg and about 140-80 on rogue core. But when I turned shadows to low my frames doubled so it's still pretty well optimized
I was able to get RC running on a 15 year old server which is pretty impressive on ghost ships end
yeah, even in DRG, shadows are a pretty big performance hit
It's a large dark room with moving light sources, the game still looks good with shadows turned down which is nice

Steam's return policy works well enough for Rogue Core. It is completely valid under the policy to request a refund for a game on the grounds of you not liking it given you played for less than 2 hours (sometimes even more depending on your jurisdiction and the strength of consumer rights there).
2 hours is about enough to get through two runs to decide if you remotely like the game or not.
Generally I'd say that anyone who enjoys hazard 5 DRG and roguelikes should enjoy Rogue Core

currently it just spawns in a bunch of enemies and 1- a few tentacles so it's not too hard to deal with if you're near the elevator

they could probably do individual cosmetics but frameworks like DRG would be too hard
and frameworks complicated updating DRG too, so they most likely won't do that mistake again

Which is a shame, because God do I love some of the newer frameworks, but it's very understandable
If they ever do a DRG 2 I think I would be pretty content if they decided to drastically reduce the number of frameworks but focus on the ones which really change the design of the guns. Which seems counterintuitive, but I'd rather have one or two Diesel Driven level frameworks versus a dozen Glyphid Trophy Hunter or Infected level frameworks

I mean, why not? They've mentioned, iirc, that they're only so much they can do to add to the original game at this point simply due to tech debt/feature creep. I'm not saying any time soon, but say, like, a decade from now, if they were to start again (and reexamine how they handle frameworks in the process) I think that's how I'd hope for it to go
As far as RC goes I think it's too much of a logistical nightmare, and it doesn't matter much anyway. You're not really going to get attached to a specific gun due to the nature of random weapon retrievals, etc etc
I wouldn't mind getting paint jobs though
