You spawn next to an NPC that gives tips. But generally head left or right and look for things and chests, or head into a cave or dig down and look for ores, chests, and various things.

Eventually you'll have enough stuff that the first boss will spawn

The only thing you can't dig through is purple or red stone. If you can't dig through grass get rid of the tree on it

@warm spindle one important thing to know that isn't obvious is you need houses to spawn more NPCs. Each NPC has its own condition for spawning but each also need a house.

To make a house you need to have an enclosed space of not dirt. It needs background walls (also not dirt),door, a chair, a table, and a light source.

Fishing is insanely overpowered

Keep at least 1 alter since they are used for crafting

But they do spawn in the hard mode ores when broken

And allow the mech bosses to spawn

Alternatively you can do a lot of fishing for the hard mode ores
