For example, if I want to make a house and then change the material it is made of, before it let me put the wood in my hand directly, but now it won't let me, I have to chop the original material with the pickaxe and then put the wood in. I think that option was a little bubble to the left of the inventory

theres a little option called Block Swap, its on the left of your inventory
you mightve turned it off by accident

if you hear a clicking sound when you press the option, you should be able to do it again

corruption is more geared towards ranger

crimson is moreso for the other 3 classes

both are good though since vilethorn is a decent support magic weapon

I prefer corruption as a mage, the vilethorn is a very nice weapon to get early because of how limited the choices are + the mana regeneration band -> magic cuffs (although you can craft is using the tinkerers workshop later)

You can always make an artificial biome in hardmode for ichor

Crimson/ corruption are about equal for rangers

i mean yeah i just said crimson moreso since ichor

Undertaker, and boc are all better than corruption variants (although for armour, ancient shadow exists if you want to farm for it)

Once you enter hardmode you could argue the dart rifle is important but the Daedalus stormbow is more than good enough for all the mechs (it’s optimal for twins/ skele prime)

As for the putrid scent, it’s important but you’ll only need 1 which isn’t a big deal at all - I’d rather take the pre hm benefits

keep in mind that diamonds are relatively harder to get thru an extractinator but it takes less time than actually going down into caves and looking exclusively for them
