yeah it would've been a disaster, the public sector bureaucracy in this country is very incompetent
so if uni assit takes longer we can direclty tell the university to check with uni assit??
You can but I hope it won't come to that since they should be taking phone calls by now
and you don't have to wait 2-3 weeks for a reply by email like i did
I have sent an email 3 days ago , still no reply ..
its been improving, businesses are opening up again. In many places you don't even need a prior test or appointment to shop.
and more people are getting vaccinated
universities still having online lectures right ? btw from which city are you ? if you dont mind telling
well id rather not say, but its in NRW
the uni still only has online lessons but the local Berufsschule has in-person classes
so i imagine it won't be long before all education is back to (relative) normal
hows the situation in bedburg if you're near NRW
so are you a german citizen or were you just there befour applying for the uni? I mean why did you have to apply via uni assit if you are germann
No I'm American I was just finishing up an exchange program while I applied
are you familiar with bochum uni and hsrw uni also near the border
anyways @olive summit thanks for your information..
@clear snowsorry i wasnt looking at discord, im familiar with HSRW, agriculture programs are big there
hehe that's okay.. by big you mean they accept more students?
well rather its a notable program for the school, lots of farms in the general area too
this uni has alot of international students right ? also isn't kleve is far from the city?
yeah i saw a lot of programs were offered in English so must be, closest major city is Nijmegen across the border
👍 👍 👍
Is it more worth to do a bachelor's degree in your native country and then go to Germany to do a master's, or do a Studienkolleg, your bachelor's degree, and then a master's, all in Germany? What are the consequences and advantages of each path? I'm asking more in regards to job security and admission to universities.
I'm worried doing university here will make my future in Germany harder; maybe a good university will not accept me to do my master's degree, or maybe another will not be willing to hire me as a teacher, both because my bachelor's is foreign. I don't know if that's a reasonable fear, so let me know if I'm wrong.
If some specifics will help, I'm currently in Brazil, and I think I can enter a good university here; the degree is philosophy, and I'm looking to become a university professor; planning to go to Baden-Württemberg.
Please ping me when responding. Herzlichen Dank im Voraus.
@rotund trellis
Imo better to do everything in Germany.
You need time to get used to how things work in Germany.
Better to start early from Studienkolleg.
I see quite a few people who couldn't adapt when doing their masters here. Especially when they don't speak German and chose to do one of those English masters program.
Job security-wise, perhaps you can browse website like stepstone.de and type in "Philosophie".
Just read you want to become a prof. I think read about how it works here in Germany. Could be different from what you expected. Dunno.
Can I land with a German student visa in Maastricht and then go to Aachen?
I'm noneu
I usually transit in Amsterdam. So yes.
Transit as in ?
I was thinking of landing in Liege or Maastricht and taking a bus or bahn to Aachen instead of landing in Frankfurt and bahn-ing 250km
I dunno if the visa can be used in this way
Transit as in take another plane from Amsterdam to my destination in Germany.
Anyways it shouldn't be a problem in your case.
Cool thanks! 👍🏻
if someone has a bachelor degree it is ALOT more easier to get enrolled in germnay for masters .. so in conclusion masters student can easily get admissions then bachelor students.. but I'd also say its better to start early from everything in germany if someone else is planning on continuing to live there ... but yah masters >> bachelor
hi is there any way we could buy tickets for euro cup in munich. I have idea that they are refunding sold tickets but any way we could get a second hand ticket from someone
is it normal to go through like 5 years of learning german and remember none of it
Yep.
I can't find the video again.
But there was this Easy German video that has a guest teacher.
That guy operates a website or something.
Anyways, he made this point that I think it's correct.
If you've been in Germany for many years, taking classes, even on and off, etc, and still don't speak German, the most likely reason is some mental block thing.
Like you hate the language at some level, etc.
i think having a bad memory dosent help
ive done 5? years now through school
I thought you meant 5 years of self study since that would be pretty bad
the general rule to learn languages is just to read more and look shit up
SRS programs also help but they are only deserts and not the main course
What are your go-to dandruff shampoo in Germany?
I used to use Kelual DS. But they changed the formula.
Not as effective as it was.
I tried the ketconazole shampoo available here, it was pretty bad.
I'm looking for Selsun 2.5 (Yellow), but they have stock problems in Europe it seems.
It's has selenium and zinc right ?
Medical grade anti dandruff
Heya guys
Finitba or Expatrio ? 🙈
Also the RWTH aachen has sent me a conditional letter of admission saying I need to complete my bachelor's first to get admission into masters. But I have already completed my bachelor's and have the certificate of that as well.
Should I send a mail to their international relations section?
This might cause big problems for visa
Blocked account
ich habe eine frage, ich studiere gerade maschinenbau und möchte in deutschland studieren. kann ich mich nur für ingenieurwesen bewerben oder kann ich mich für architektur bewerben?
hi thankyou so much for getting back to me but no mine is still in evaluation. when did you apply ? I applied on may 2nd
you said right you applied befour may and paid the fee as well , was your choice of course available on uni assit for you to apply before may??? I wanted to do that but the uni said the courses will be open only on may 2 ....
good for you , but my choice of course wasn't available on uni assit until 2nd of may.. maybe you're application statues is now okay cause you paid the fee befour may .. can I know when exactly you applied
did you apply your bachelor certificate on uni assit ??
oh alright I have paid exalt a month after you :( anyway good luck, hope you will receive good news from the university
keep us updated amigo😅🙏
i dont think its possible to get into a masters architecture program unless you have a bachelor degree in architecture
a friend of mine couldnt pursue masters in architecture although she had an innenarchitektur bachelor
yes and also cuz architecture bachelor is very construction oriented so they think you cant skip it
guys has anyone ever emailed to uni assit and has got a reply ????
calling gets the fastest response
I applied for masters on aachen's own RWTHonline
contact form can take weeks
this ways says "your message couldn't be sent due to technical issues"... so I emailed them but still no reply it's been 5 days
i got my admission like 3 weeks after i applied
Noice
Yes but is it supposed to be 3months slow 😔
Yess its nc
Nevertheless
For non eus
FintiBa or expatrio?
Fintiba expatriosa🪄
inflicts the curse of financial debt
Cools
That's the feedback I've been getting as well
Okayyyy
I've got exp with none
What are those?
bank accounts
not one week for me but that was during corona times
so you already have an admission letter but you want TUB is it ?
does anyone have knowledge about the student city Giessen? what is it like? how expensive is it? can you find part time work? what is the university like?
which university in giessen?
I don't know much about university almost all the bachelor programs are taught in german .. the city is fine but have no idea about part time work
Im C1, with certificate too, so thats no problem
then good , the university has many study options.. have you applied?
no, am still deciding on a city to study in
have sorted it down to somewhere in Rheinland-Phalz and Hessen, because of different reasons
if your planning on applying for 2021 winter the deadline is on july 15th so decide soon .. actually students can find part time anywhere but depends on the amount of money you want and the type of job
hessen is a good option
thanks for the advice, Ill probably have my applications sent by the end of the week
for what? clown college
Lol.
It sounds rude. But I think you shouldn't believe the common claim that all unis in Germany are equal so easily. Personal experience.
most application deadlines have been moved back to july 31 because of corona
at least that's what I've been seeing 👀
What should I be looking out for in that case?
it depends on your field of study really ..
hmm, as for the JLU, its one of the top ranking universities for Agricultural studies, thats how I found out about in the first place, dont know for what else to look out for
maybe the student/non-student ratio in the city
I dont know about JLU specifically but there are lot of agricultural studies there without NC so its easier to get enrolled.. check with other universities as well
I think top ranking/ or the ranks of the universities is something students should pay LESS attention to..
ye, its not my main priority, more so is the city and its qualities
Also JLU is one of the only two unis in Hessen that offers agricultural Studies
Most of the international application deadlines were almost unchanged for masters
I'm looking at you tu Berlin

I've been looking at bachelors this time around...I hope I didn't misunderstand it tho lol
guess I better hurry
guys for anyone who applied on may 2021 from uni assit , is your application statues is still "in evaluation"??? anybody ??
I was considering university in Germany (in German), but I know I don’t have the knowledge currently. Does anyone know how long it usually takes for people to prepare for the language exams for university (or how long it takes to teach yourself the language to the right degree), and what level you have to reach for that? I know it’s not likely to be possible given ideally I’d go to university in just over a year, but I thought I might as well ask and see what experiences people have or what they know about it.
It all depends on how much time and effort you devote to it. For reaching a high language level, lets say C1, it probably takes at least 1 to 2 years of daily immersion in German
Have you got any suggestions for how to do that in the UK?
Or how long I’d need to spend working on things each day?
I’m trying to work out whether it would be possible, let alone something I should try.
Really?
but depending on how fast you want to get to your goal, the amount of work you have to put into it varies a lot
Okay, that’s useful to know
first learn the basics and a bunch of vocab, then try to immerse yourself in German content/media as much as possible, whatever flavor you like the most
books, movies, youtube videos, streams, ect
Is there any particular resources that are very good for learning quickly, or just thoroughly?
try to vary it up as much as you can, so your vocabulary doesnt sound like Harry Potter in the end
I’m already trying to do some of that, but I take it I’d need to spend most of my day in German.
whatever you are more comfortable with, I personally learned German by watching German cartoons as a kid and constantly having someone to talk German with
And chat a lot in German if I can?
dont force yourself to read books if you already dont read books in English, you will just lose all your motivation
yes
and talking too at some point, but first understand what others say
are you doing a-levels / gcses at the moment?
or past 6th form?
I’ve only really had a few months to learn German so far and even that’s been very on and off, but I’m trying to do a little bit of talking with my boyfriend, even if we don’t actually talk about any topic really, and I’ve come to understand a whole lot more than I used to.
I’ve actually just finished my A levels, but haven’t got my results yet
so i assume you didn't do german a-level? 😅
- what were your subjects? germany can be fairly strict on 'allowed' qualifications to start uni with
No I didn’t. Just out of curiosity, what level does A level get you to?
Speaking of, do you know what grade requirements they have?
I did maths and physics
A-Level gets you to CEFR B1 - B2, depending on how much work you put in. i was at a high B2 when i finished and I got to C1 fairly quickly once I got back into the flow of things.
I have a chronic illness so I wasn’t able to do a third subject
then you'll have to do a studienkolleg
If I need it for university I will do a third a level after my gap year.
what subject do you want to study?
Will I be able to do that, and what are the requirements for that?
I’m not 100% sure yet. Probably something in the direction of physics.
so for a-levels, you need to have four independent subjects, at least three at A2 level, one must be a language, one must be a science or maths
for natural sciences you'd need a language + two of maths/bio/chem/phys + another
Oh wow, so I’ll need 4 to go to university or is this for the studienkolleg?
this is for university
if you don't meet those requirements, you'd do a studienkolleg
for studienkolleg you'd need to prove B1 level german (imo not too difficult to do in a year) and you'd have to (iirc?) sit an entrance exam
then they'd get you up to the required level in sciences + german
So if I wanted to go to university I’d have to take another two a levels and reach a high level of German, or I could go to the Studienkolleg and I’d only need B1? How long do you spend there and how much do they cost?
basically yes
studienkolleg is a year and it's free :)
but you would need to pay for living costs, and the UK government's student loans won't cover that
No, but if I only have to get to B1 I should be able to try snd get a job in my gap year snd see if I can make enough to cover living costs?
living costs for an entire degree?
because UK student finance won't cover studienkolleg or the degree
No, for the first year
and with brexit i'm not sure what your position would be on being able to work during your studies (and for something like physics i expect it wouldn't be recommended)
Ahh, then I’m going to have to speak to my parents before I do anything. Since I’m guessing the only way I’d be able to fund it is if they paid.
How much are university fees in Germany?
definitely talk to your parents, i don't know of any other funding methods for uk students
tuition is free in germany
except in Baden-Württemberg for international students i think?
Okay, so it would just be living costs that need to be covered. Still, that’s not going to be easy.
indeed.
- with brexit if you're not an EU citizen you'll need to show you have the money to pay for a year of studies upfront
lemme ping you a few links
Thank you so much for your help by the way
How much money do you need to prove?
information about a-levels for entry: https://www.daad.de/en/study-and-research-in-germany/plan-your-studies/recognition-gce/
information about studienkolleg: https://www.uni-assist.de/en/how-to-apply/get-information/studienkolleg-preparatory-course/
general info wiki about uni in germany: https://old.reddit.com/r/germany/wiki/studying
around 10k eur i think
(per year)
also, it's worth noting there are also some english-language courses in germany; but you'd still need to take extra a-levels to be able to get into those, and (a) the language one is likely to pose a particular issue if you didn't take a language at GCSE, and (b) you'd need to do them as a private candidate most likely, which is $$$
Do you know what grades I would have to get for the studentkolleg? Or is that included in the links (I haven’t had a chance to check them yet)
grades don't tend to matter as long as you passed 🤷♂️
I took Russian at GCSE, but I can’t really remember anything about it. I’m assuming that it needs to be a language other than German or English
by default courses are open admission so if you meet the subject requirements you can matriculate - it's only the NC courses which limit admission based on grades, i'm not sure how A-Levels are considered equivalent to german abitur grades
german would be fine. english language i think might also be fine.
So if I could get the right German level and simultaneously do the A level and one other I might meet the requirements for university? Although I think it would still be easier to go down the studentkolleg route.
that would work, yeah.
but you'd need to get your german to C1 which isn't the easiest thing to do...
Not at all
(would guarantee you an A* in the A-Level though)
imo the studienkolleg route might be a bit better, particularly for getting you used to a new system and because it would take one year, not two... but it depends on whether you'd be able to afford that extra year of living costs
I think that sounds like a much better idea actually
What would be the recommended language level, you said B1 is the minimum but if it’s taught in German is that enough to easily get by?
i'm not sure what level the studienkolleg is at
but i think i'd really struggle to be in a german-only environment at B1. i'd sooner do it at B2.
Okay. So although minimum is B1 I’d probably want at least B2? And to be able to go about my day in German and understand teaching?
maybe folks who have experience with studienkolleg can comment a bit more about that 😉
i'd recommend getting your german level really as high as you can
some Studienkollegen are offered in English but they tend to be more expensive and are often attached to a particular university (with the intention of most students attending that uni after completion of the courses)
Depends on what course you wanna take. For example mkurs requires minimal B2
Usually for tkurs and etc b1 is enough
That's when we're talking about admission requirements.
The study in the kolleg itself requires very good german. Otherwise you won't be able to keep up
Has anyone used services of rightnow.de? I just got an ad stating I can get money back from my gym if I give them my contact info and that sounds sketchy af.
Alternatively, anyone here a member of FitX and has been able to get their money back in the months the gym has been closed due to the pandemic? :D
Is it easier to get german citizenship after completing higher studies or it would depend on finding a job in the half a year or so of time allowed to look for it when finished ?
i don't see why finishing studies would come into it - what's important is the period of time spent living in the country + language abilities
see here https://www.bmi.bund.de/SharedDocs/faqs/EN/topics/migration/staatsang/Erwerb_der_deutschen_Staatsbuergerschaft_durch_Eingbuergerung_en.html
You also need to be able to provide for yourself (and possibly your family) without needing welfare
So having a job seems effectively a requirement unless you're filthy rich
not studionkollege but pre college offered by universities
like a month before uni to get the basic knowledge? @clear snow
no not a month, a year ,
I don't think that's a thing in Germany, read https://www.reddit.com/r/germany/wiki/studying first
Some universities offer so called Vorkurse, but as snellius said it's more a refresher of school basics and only takes a few weeks usually.
What subject?
law , anyway I sorted it out , thanks
anyone with uni assit still in evaluation statues ?
Never seen a preparatory course that takes a full year. 3 months at most
Unless if you switch from another major and are required to gather ECTS credits/attend mandatory subjects which comes only at Sommer/Wintersemester
thanks for the information
Hey, if I was to go to vacation inside Europe union by plane I would still need both a negative test and both dozes of covid vaccine so that I'm not in quarantine when I return or is the test enough?
I looked it up online but I'm still confused, thought maybe someone here may know
I think that varies from country to country.
@exotic barn
Croatia if it means anything
you want to look for the policies of the specific country you need to enter
meaning the one you're going to and the one you'll be returning to
guys does anybody know anyother discord server with students in germany ?
havent found any
Hey guys, I have a very important question. When I want to apply to universities, however will attain my "qualification for higher education" in the next month or so. What am I supposed to do to get an acceptance?
didn't understand your question
Okay, so basically. I want to apply to unis in germany to study there. However, it's kind of hard when I don't have a graduation diploma from my school yet. I will be graduating sometime around next month, so I was wondering how can I apply to unis, or do i have to wait?
if your receiving your graduation certificate befour July 15th you can apply .
but wouldn't it be late?
no
some unis are asking for it, even if i dont have it
lol okay then apply after you get it
alright sure
Obvious answer is ask the uni. But from what I understand, it won't be a problem.
Try forums.
thanks
alright thanks
Somebody here who has a drone, lives in Germany, and knows a bit about getting a permit?
I was wondering who I'd need to call to get a permit to fly above nature reserves like the Allgau Alps
This https://map2fly.flynex.de tells me to contact either the Bayerisches Staatsministerium des Innern, für Bau u. Verkehr or Luftamt Nordbayern
Would that be a good bet or am I better off contact the national aviation thing in Germany
These guys
Which one would you contact first?
I honestly don't know the difference between the two
First is the owner, you definetely need their permission
https://droniq.de/en/pages/droniq-app grab this app. It's from the german ATC authority
Okay, I need help from someone that has successfully moved to Germany from the US I have alot of questions.
If anyone can help, the time for me to move is getting closer and closer, and I'm panicking.
if you want to dm me about anything specific, my inbox is open. I moved to germany from the states about 3 years ago.
@bold crag thank you
right but for the time aspect it's either work or study time that can count in is it?
hey guys does anybody know about applying from hochschulstart.de???
in my experience hochschulstart is specifically used for the NC (restricted admission) programs. When prompted, you should be able to link it to your uni-assist account with a number.
how do I link it to uni assit?? I just entered the BAN number on uni assit application
im not sure exactly but either of those websites should prompt you when you make an application
hochschule.de sent an email saying the uni has now received my application but on uni assit the same application and documents are still in evaluation statues... ??that's why
that's normal, results for NC programs should take longer since they are handled by the actual uni
thanks for your information
was heißt das hier genau?
...what the fuck
Gleich 🗿
Has anyone applied to Ulm to go to Studienkolleg?
ulm university of applied science?
Yes
Does anybody have experience with transparent braces?
Is liability insurance really required?
It's affordable, and losing your keys is a super expensive affair.
Or so I heard. Btw not every liability insurance covers that key thing.
Liability insurance is a must in germany
i think it should be so everywhere
It costs 5 euro in a month
is there anyone, who took / currently taking w kurs during studienkolleg? i have couple question if you dont mind answering, thanks.
wont you just call a lockpick if you lose your keys ::(
i thought if you lose your keys you have to pay someone to redo the locks on the doors
ohhhhhhh
interesting
That costs a tonne in Berlin btw, anything from a 100€ to 300€ depending on where and when
Hey, I'm looking for the fastest way to remove paint off a wall in Germany. Any tips? German guides appreciated as well.
(I just don't know what to Google)
Paint something over it
Jk idk
We're actually trying to remove it due to it being "rough" and being an impediment to putting up wallpaper, as wallpaper needs something smooth.
uni assit updates from anyone ?
Okay do enough people in Saarland speak Hochdeutsch so I can learn proper German while I study abroad?
well Hochdeutsch is ubiquitous in most places, I think in Saarland theres a dialect with some French words but its probably only spoken by the older generations
Thanks :)
np, even in Switzerland where the German might as well be a separate language they use Hochdeutsch for business and so on. In any case once you grasp Hochdeutsch it might be interesting to explore the local dialect.
in Switzerland where the German might as well be a separate language
it is ;) it would make zero sense to consider it the same
Yes indeed
Wtaf
Yeah it's a nightmare to lose your keys and not have a spare with a friend, you could also look up these rates online for your city I think
Better get a number pad for your door, one repair will be the same cost
Per my contract I can't as much as make a hole in a wall without fixing it, or filling it up without my landlord knowing. I'll get kicked out if I do anything and get found out😅
Ya well probably communicate with them, they might actually agree
it cost us only 9 euros to copy our keys, might wanna look into that
What does it mean exactly?
if you are from outside of the EU you need to apply directly at the uni
lol ty
@clear snow
hey, does anyone have any experience with the Deutschlandstipendium? I'm applying as a Master's student
have any non-citizen residents gotten tested for Corona at a testing center in Germany? I booked a 'free citizen test' for Thursday, but now I'm second guessing, since I don't understand why they would even still have a button/process for paying 30 euros for the same test (rapid test button). Do residents qualify for free citizen testing?
I also want to apply for it. I think it’s till last of june and The information is written on university website
yee they've just opened their application! i'm more looking for any advice from anyone who has gone through it before
Yeah lets hope someone writes here or Once I find information i can write here
Yes, it's free once a week, you have to pay if you need more. You don't need to be a citizen for that i don't think. I'm not German (though i am an eu-citizen) and I've been getting tested for free semi-regularly with no issues
Though i think paid tests cost around 15-18 euros not 30 👀 although this may vary by Bundesstaat
Hi. The application process for deutschland stipendium depends upon university. The process for my university is filling the application form online and submitting a motivation letter. Then you will be notified later whether you got scholarship or not
Some university might also have interview process
Yes, i think my university is the same. I think they have an interview process on mine, but they don't really provide much information on what kind of interview it will be
Or what language it will be held on
There is special webpage for scholarship in each university where they have written it.
It’s between Deutsch or Englisch
if your course is on english then they won’t do interview in german
yes
Best of luck for both of us!!
yeah sure thanks and you too.
I'm planning on applying for it too. I'm not sure what their requirements are for it though if I'm applying before my first semester.
Undergraduate?
I guess maybe your abitur or high school qualifications?
No, Masters
i'm in the same position. it seems like they'll look at your final undergraduate transcript for reference. To quote my university's Deutschlandstipendium FAQ site:
If you are studying or planning to study for a Master’s degree: photocopies of your undergraduate degree certificate as well as any other credit certificates in accordance with the regulations for admission to your Master’s programme that you may have. If you have not been issued with your undergraduate degree certificate when you submit your application for the Deutschlandstipendium scholarship, please let us have this document as soon as you have received it, but at the beginning of the lecture period of the winter semester at the latest. Please be aware that it is your responsibility to submit your certificate in time. We will not remind you. If you have been admitted to a Master’s programme on a conditional basis (i. e. have yet to complete your undergraduate degree in the winter semester), you are not eligible for a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship!
I see. I'm still not 100% sure on what I'm supposed to write on the cover letter. Do they need proof of financial hardship? Or is a good academic track record sufficient regardless? I don't really know how they evaluate applicants.
how do you prove financial hardship?
No idea, I don't really know what they base it on
take a picture of your hovel and the mule you ride to school
they talk about writing all your achievements in uni, grades, special rewards, internship experience, etc etc
and yeah, personal or family hardships you have gone through
Fair enough. Thanks for the help 👍
And probably infos on you bank account + pay slips 😉
Empty
hola
your statues changed from in evaluation to okay ,, right ?
so now uni assit is done , the university's has to get back to you ?
hey guys ,can anyone suggest a workbook for learning german , for beginner level
Can aldi talk sim be used over EU?? without configuring anything extra on Packet S?
I don't know about it specifically but all cellphone companies in the eu are obliged to serve in the whole area with no roaming charges
So it should work all over the EU as-is i think
In Germany I used Roaming the entire time w/out an issue as an American with T-Mobile
I guess corona is over in Germany?
Oh, I thought everyone can get vaccinated and everything is open now.
There's something about delta variant in dw.com, but I think people got tired of the scare and won't care.
you still need to wear a mask in many places, need proof of a negative test to eat at a restaurant, lots of people are not vaccinated yet, getting a vaccine is hard because of supply, and the virus is still circulating
just because things are getting better doesn't mean it's over, or that it can't get worse again
I see. Well, I hope it's over soon.
So there's still a supply problem for the vaccines. That sucks.
yeah and curevac ended up giving terrible results at the trials
so that's one thing that is not going to help
Lol, I haven't even heard about curevac.
Wow, I couldn’t imagine needing proof of a negative test to eat at a restaurant, that sounds horrible
no actually it's nothing special
and i really don't mind getting tested before eating in a potentially crowded place. The opposite would be irresponsible if anything
Lol, well that’s just totally nonexistent here
I also tend to be a bit more on the liberal side when it comes to this stuff, I‘m so tired of it all.
it will never end if we start acting like it's not a problem every time it ebbs
It is totally a problem, don’t get me wrong. But at least where I live, since anyone can get vaccinated whenever they want to pretty much, the restrictions have become less severe.
this is not a matter of politics or being liberal, it's simple control over ourselves with a basic amount of ethics. I haven't visited my family in several years at this point (before the pandemic i didn't have the means, when i got the means the pandemic became a thing) and it does take a toll, but no amount of selfishness is worth risking the lives of others, even if it would be laughably easy to deflect blame
i understand that, but that's not the case in... basically anywhere except the usa and a couple exceptions. And even when the possibility of getting a vaccine is there, that doesn't mean enough people got it—until that happens, the world is not safe
I think emotionally it has just been really taxing and that’s why I hate it and restrictions. I don’t like feeling like a robot or just some disposable number. Also personally I don’t really trust the vaccine yet, it feels like it came out too quickly...it’s almost like they skipped some kind of important steps, though idk if they actually did, I just feel like it should have been researched even further before being released to the public here. Like you said, it’s not available in most places, but somehow it is here 🤷♂️
Also there’s conspiracy theories about it which I‘m not particularly interested in but just tend to give me anxiety when I think about them, not anxiety attacks, but just annoying anxiety that I don’t want and wouldn’t be there if Covid didn’t exist. I am an overthinker so that doesn’t help.
its also emotionally taxing for those who are at an increased risk of severe health consequences from covid or who've had family members die because of it
This is all I will say about the topic, but I don't like any criticism of the restrictions or how Sweden turns out to be OK gets you labeled as anti-vaxxer, anti-science, alt-right, and so on.
I'd rather stay in lockdown for another year than endanger other ppls lives and i rly hate being in lockdown
wait this isnt sensitive topics

am i have stupid
Yes. It’s been emotionally taxing for a lot of people for different reasons.
I don’t even really like talking about the topic, that in itself makes me anxious, so yeah I‘m out
understandable have a great day
guys anyone flying to Germany for the winter semester this year ? (not someone whose already on Germany)
I was in Austria for a week and I was able to use it as usually without extra payment
so it means i can call a dutch number in netherlands without paying extra
I'm not sure, but guess it's safer to use Skyoe or Whatsapp for that
Yes
I am
Hi
Heyy
i think i used expatrio
It's not cheaper by a lot
when I started my account it was almost about the same price
i did a price comparison back then, idk if it is still the same
oh yes you are right, the initial fee is a lot higher
i had no problems with expatrio tbh
fintiba is more accurate and fast
Hey guys, question for German uni/college students:
Where do students in Germany look for a place to stay / student housing / dorms, closeby their uni etc. ?
For instance, where I live, we mostly post facebook ads to try looking for housemates/dorms. How does it work in Germany?
it's the same , you can also get information regarding accommodation from your relavant university.
So... also via Facebook?
are there no dedicated sites for this?
there are dedicated sites , as I have mentioned, search with your relvant university/ area / city and Facebook/ Instagram helps too.
to my knowledge there isnt a specific site per say, depends on your uni , city , your budget etc , you've gotta figure it out and search by your self
wg-gesucht seems to be very popular. it's what i used (and a fair amount of people i know used).
Studierendenwerk in Berlin has also apartment listings and it's where one would apply for student accommodation generally
There are also companies that offer housing for students/Azubis exclusively
Exactly the same. Quit social media meme doesn't apply here. Facebook is so much better at this than Wg-gesucht.
wg-gesucht only has listings for a few cities, immoscout has a better selection just watch out for scams
Lol, suggesting facebook is better than wg-gesucht to find an accommodation is not ok, now? Fuck this place.
I've had much better luck in wg-gesucht than facebook tbh
yeah wg-gesucht is geared especially towards WGs and other student-esque accommodations
all my homies love wg-gesucht
@clear snow I mean these are pretty small unis. would be surprised. you got a specific question?
i think the reason nyandog said they're small unis is to emphasise the point that you're not likely to find someone who went there on this discord...
i think we have people here at all manner of unis @clear snow 😆 it might be helpful if you just post your question here and people might be able to help even if they don't go to the same uni
just to clarify: we have universities/unis, Universitäten, and Fachhochschulen (applied sciences). Usually every large city has one or multiple universities (Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich...). For Fachhochschulen, they are sometimes located in smaller cities (Fulda) all over germany.
thank you
(the ones you mentioned are Fachhochschulen)
@winter viper have you seen this guide? https://old.reddit.com/r/germany/wiki/studying/guide
r/germany: English-language discussions and news relating to Germany and German culture.
oh right havent looked at that in a while thanks
hmm
^^Germany, unlike the United States, requires you to choose your degree program before enrolling. You do not just take a little of this and a little of that until you decide what to do - you enrol in a particular degree program at a particular university, as opposed to enrolling in a university and then deciding what you want to study. ^^
this isnt 100% true to be fair
a lot of schools accept based on major
but i assume the big difference it means is prereqs
you can apply to multiple degree programs at the same uni but you still must decide before enrollment, "undeclared" majors aren't really a thing here in my experience
where you can like find empty spray bottles? It would rly come in handy for me to clean stuff with mix of water and vinegar but i cant find any lol
I would try a Baumarkt
Action or Tedi might have them
I couldnt find in local Tedi and the nearest action i have is couple metro station with line change
maybe tm i will go and try find it
otherwise i gonna have smelly yoga mats 🤣
What's the deal with this question on the VIDEX form? What does it actually mean?
How do Germans learn about WW2 and Hitler growing up? Do they teach it in school or kinda shy over it? What do they teach you guys?
The last question is pretty broad
We do learn about it
but even if I did remember everything from that, it would be kinda a lot to write down now
Maybe look it up or something?
If you look it up in German and add 'school (Schule)' (and maybe use google to translate what you get) I could imagine that you get a good answer
usually in 5th grade an overview on run up to WW2 and WW2, then again in a political light in higher grades once every while. So usually quite a lot.
It's usually more "nazi time" and not WW2. So the focus is not on the war itself and anything that happened outside of europe is usually glanced over.
This is how it works in the UK too
guys can anybody recommend universities which accepts students with minimum requirements.. not the popular and major unis .. there has to be atleast few unis which accepts students easily ??
... can you not just apply for courses that have no NC?
so for courses that has no NC they enrolled students easily? this is for my friend in India , he is struggling without unis enrolling him while having all the requirements and we dont know why
no matter what program you apply to you need to have an equivalent educational background to the Abitur (German highschool leaving certificate)
and most universities here use uni-assist to evaluate whether international students fulfill that
for non-NC programs that is the minimum requirement for admission, for NC programs thats is simply the 1st step for consideration.
yah this person has all of that , even 13 years of school , advanced level , language. we were thinking maybe the country plays a part here ...
???
yeah they evaluate each country separately with requirements given by the education ministry
their website has a full breakdown
even anabin says the application is eligible for a direct apply
should be good then, just find a university or two that interests you
like i said most use uni assist so you apply there and the application is forwarded to the schools
would you know some small unis that has a higher accepting rate , I mean we could google but asking from someone who's aware about it makes it more accurate
if uni-assist evaluates your education as the same as an Abitur, you can attend practically any non-NC program (given the uni was on your list)
can't really speak for NC programs, they are obviously more competitive
thanks buddy
is there any way to find out which studienkolleg course you need to take for a given university course? if it's not specified on the uni's website obviously
email the university 🤷
yeah well aside from that
once you applied for a certain course in a university , the uni itself will let you know wheather you need studienkollege or not and if you do they will let you know the course you must study at studionkollege.
just Google studionkollege courses , select the relavant course according to your study field.
Hey guys - what are the best German student room / dorm-rental websites?
Basically looking for websites where I can find rooms / housing to live in as a student
in my country we usually use Facebook for it, does anyone know a good site in DE?
on uni assit for the once who applied on may 2021 , have you'll get any response from uni assit ?have your documents has been sent? or in eva still? pls answer big help
i used wg-gesucht.de and it was good
Ich bin so gegen den neuen Namen dieses einzelnen Kanals.. "Leben unter dem Dach" wirkt einfach anders.
ok the new name suits more 😂🥳
Lmao hab wirklich nichts dagegen, aber ich habe nach Leben unterm dach gesucht, bevor ich hier gekommen bin
guys is there anyone who has applied from uni assit and still their documents are ^in evaluation^ staues ??
Hello there. Is the medicine course in germany only exclusive to the winter semester or does it start in the summer semester too? Any help is appreciated.
I assume that is highly region/uni dependent, so really if you want the most certain information, it's best to email your uni of choice and ask them.
???
it takes a while, sometimes up to start of sept for german/austrian unis
have patience and if there is real concern, shoot them an email or phone em
never hurts
already have , no response
for international students it's too late for the Visa processing, that's why
thank you. i have already looked at many universities and did not find any with a medicine course starting in the summer semester. It would helpful if anyone here knows a university that starts a medicine course in the summer semester
What exactly do you mean by course?
For the most part, unis are tailored so that the newcomers start in the winter and the first semester lectures are offered in winter. Depending on the lecture itself, however, it may be offered in both the winter and summer semester. So, while starting in winter is optimal, some unis might have a study plan recommendation for people who are starting in winter or you may just plan your own path instead. Worst case scenario, you could pause for a semester and give yourself a nice well-deserved break before uni life starts, or see if you can start in the summer and already take a few courses to make your following winter semester easier.
Still though, for the specific details, it's best looking at your uni's site for information or emailing them or their student organizations/representatives.
there are, charite and münster have summer semesters
of course, there are way less openings compared to WS
you think the application time for uni-assist is bad...to get your foreign educational certificates recognized for lower level schools it takes 6+ months
but at least theres no fee
uni assit main line is always busy, 😡😡 does anybody a contact number other than the one on uni assit website
It won't bring you anything contacting uni assist. Just wait. Last year i got an answer from Uni assist 6 weeks after they confirmed that they received my application.
😤😤😤 thanks for your response
thank you for the comprehensive reply (:
thanks a lot, i’ll check them out!
guys can a student study 2 bachelor degrees at the same time in Germany?
somehow i don't think the workload would be survivable...
yah I know ! but is it possible like legally ?
like suppose someone apply for a certain degree from their home country to study in Germany and after going there can they apply for another bachelor degree ?
There's something like Hauptfach und Nebenfach. But idk if you get two degrees out of it.
What CEFR level is usually required for entering a master's degree in Germany? C2?
Depends on the course, generally C2 is required for courses like medicine. But if you reach this level then that’ll always be a plus for you, give you advantage over the others who apply for the same course
Very true!
I'd tend more towards a C1 average tbh.
Also some degrees might be in English if they want to attract international students, so that's an option too. At my uni (Austria) the English degrees don't require any German knowledge.
1 out of 1 German unis that I looked at requires DSH-2 which roughly corresponds to C1.
Also always check which certificates your uni of choice accepts and requires. Some certificates are seen as more memey and there may be a higher requirement for those (e.g. many people that normally require C1 will require a C2 if you get a Goethe certificate).
Understood. Danke!
so I'm thinking of studying to get my master's or find a job in Germany in the near future, I'm not sure if COVID would prevent either from happening (I'm from the US) and what my career prospects would be
yes. you just have to write two bachelor thesis. which makes it kinda silly
Nichts
yah I know its silly but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do 😔 thanks buddy
hast du schon erfahrung damit gehabt?
why would you need to enroll for two fields tho?

Reminds me that I’ve been looking into the Austrian university to study (as a us citizen )
Where are you from ? And that’s an idea . I been thinking how to bridge the gap between when I May plan to come to Germany around March 2022 ans when the semester starts . Depends on how far I place
👀 of course it is wtf
oh thank god
Are there places where it's not?
i mean, i was very very surprised to hear that it's free where i live (indonesia)
Pretty sure it's free everywhere
Anyone know how long a Deutschlandstipendium cover letter should be? I've seen some saying maximum 1 page, others 1.5 pages, others maximum 500 words.
If I let myself write I'd probably reach 1.5 pages so I want to make sure I'm not overstepping.
does your uni of choice state it in their page? it probably varies between unis
mine was 2 A4 pages max
Not sure how I haven't checked the uni site first. Quoted "max. 1-1,5 pages" so I think about ~600 or so words should be safe
Thanks
Don't suppose anyone here has been waiting on their visa applications to complete? It's been almost 7 weeks for me, but I assume the slow down is because of COVID (UK -> Germany visa)
is it student visa your waiting for ?
I'm an academic professional, I think it's called a blue card
ohk
Is it a bad idea to travel to Germany with 500euro notes? Can I break them there or should I try to get it sorted here first?
try to get them sorted, 500 is really a lot and some shops might not have enough change or wont even accept them (i think most accept 100 euro bank notes at most? but im not sure anymore), its best to have 50euro notes id say
"In der überarbeiteten zweiten Serie der gemeinsamen Banknoten gibt es keinen 500-Euro-Schein mehr. Die im Umlauf befindlichen 500er bleiben gesetzliches Zahlungsmittel und können ohne zeitliche Begrenzung bei den nationalen Notenbanken im Euroraum umgetauscht werden."
oh, TIL 👀
So do I just go to Deutsche Bank and exchange them?
That should work
So.. some day I'm wanting to move to Germany from the USA and i have a few questions I'd like to ask as an American.
I just discovered there are other languages of German and well.. which one should I learn? Duolingo seems to be teaching me whatever German language uses Tschüss for goodbye.
Another one of my questions is I kinda want to live in an area of Germany where there's tons of wildlife but not far out where I'm in a rural area.
I'm just so interested in Germany i want to see all sorts of places but reside there when possible
I'm obviously going to get my full degree here in the US regarding education as much as I'd love to get one in Germany, i just gotta remain here until then..
And since I'm an electronics dude I'm more than likely gonna be doing computer related jobs 😅
hochdeutsch, aka standard german
in the south the local languages are more pervasive but in all of the country you can safely use standard german, which is also what you'll find on documents etc. In the north it's rare to impossible to hear anything but standard
also i'd steer away from duolingo if i were you, it's a waste of time
Which do you prefer?
I'm stuck at home so i hope there's a better alternative
If you wanna stay close to the metal there's a bit of north-south gradient when it comes to embedded. You'd usually find more in the south of germany (that's Stuttgart, Munich, etc.). By the way, there isn't that much variance in wildlife across germany (if you are not really into spotting different types of birds and so on 🙂 )
I'm more of the kind of person who's gonna like invertebrates more than birds and whatnot lol
My dream home is to have a brick, concrete mix home (old looking home if you get my sense) with green all over.. whether it be trees, vines on the wall, beautiful green grass..
books. Apps tend to trivialise effort and make it into a game, but that makes most of the time you spend on them useless: you learn to play their little game, not to speak a language. If you can find a good app that gives you a gradual path through the grammar, that's ok, but otherwise only use them for exercises (about grammar, not vocab!). Use books to go through the grammar one bit at a time in an order that works
you can find some in #resources
Thank you!
the best kind of person
Always loved insects and recently fell in love with spiders
too late
spiders are not insects
Lol idiot. Insects and spiders are the same animal, insect is just what you call the female ones.
Well yeah, females don't own the males and the other way around. They coexist.
Spiders belong to a group of animals called “arachnids”. Scorpions, mites, and ticks are also part of the arachnid family. Arachnids are creatures with two body segments, eight legs, no wings or antennae and are not able to chew. ... So, spiders are not insects they are Arachnids
Yeah most language learning apps kinda suck
Right, but that's like saying women are not men, yeah they aren't but they're basically the same thing.
I'm aware. They're arachnids.
guys do international students get to take the covid vaccine in Germany? even if you're under 18 cause is some countries including mine we dont get the covid jab .
Yes international students get the vaccine too
great, by any chance do you know the procedure?like once we arrive in Germany , to whom or where we have to go in order to get vaccinated?
Apply online or call the Impfzentrum
ok thankyou
Hallo hello (:
Im currently working at sap as a software engineer for 1 year full time and I would like to move to a startup, my profile matches exactly their research and I’m pretty good at what I do. What is a salary I could ask for in this new company?
They reached out to me and I’m interested in the position.
no one said that smh
depends on your location, education, fit to the company, work experience and general skill level. So.. you need to tell us a bit more 😉
Here are more information. Location is baden wurttemberg, education master in engineering / computer sciences, very good fit to the position, only 1 year fte experience but quite good.
@craggy iron i would guess around 50-60 k€ per year you could ask for
but since it's a startup it's probably gonna be a bit less than that
depends on how specialized your position is to an extent, but I can say that as a data scientist at a startup I currently make roughly 25€ per hour
so working full time, that'd probably be a little over 50K per year (not sure how specialized the work you're doing is or how much your year of experience will factor in, so that would affect things relative to me)
salary negotiations typically are just that, negotiations, so ask for something on the higher end of what you think is reasonable for the position and if they can't afford that, you can decide whether you're willing to make less
and if you're lucky, they'll agree to what you initially ask for and you'll get paid well :D
Yup. That's around 50k. Usual starting salary for junior engineers at big companies. So I'd ask around the same at a startup but negotiating down a little for equity or so seems fine.
for freshman year students usually what kinda part time jobs pays the most?
Muss ich mich isolieren wenn ich nach Deutschland gehe, oder sind vollständig Geimpfte von der Quarantäne-Pflicht ausgenommen?
Hello everyone.
Do you know if they will hold my passport in the moment that I will extent my Visa in Germany?
Will they hold onto your passport while you're getting your visa extended?
no
Hello people,
when applying for Studienkolleg, is it more common to apply for multiple at once? And if so how many?
hello i have question about is the doctor of pharmacy can make money in german , cuse i from another country and i want to go univercity i gonna chose that that thing to study and i want apply to german uni
u mean a pharmacist?
Does anyone know whether it is possible for me to get vaccinated as a tourist in Germany? 😅
i am not sure its possible to travel to Germany as a tourist without being vaccinated to begin with.
I am allowed but I need to present a PCR test result
yes
Are rabbits a common pet in Germany? I know some Germans through social media and I always see pictures of their pet rabbits.
sure I see them on Ebay Kleinanzeigen a lot and we have 3
Hmm interesting. They aren’t so common here in the US
Question about NRW but if this is the same elsewhere it's fine too: i know that a negative test result is necessary to eat in closed spaces at restaurants, but does having been vaccinated recently also count? I.e. can i skip the test if I'm vaccinated?
And if so, is one dose enough?
Second question, can tourists (from the eu) get the free weekly covid tests or do they have to pay?
Alright so I'm in NRW and most restaurants arent even requiring tests anymore
and for the weekly tests--the places near me dont "check" if you're a tourist. As long as you make an appointment beforehand you can get tested.
Also if you use the Lidlplus app you can get a free self-test kit if you've reached a certain amount of purchases there.
Yeah that's my experience as well
Thank you very much, that confirmed a few things for me
Restaurants want to make money I doubt they'd turn vaccinated people away just because they dont have a recent test.
np btw
There's a pub here in Mannheim asking for fast tests...
You can use the outdoor tables without the test, but the inner (is it right?) tables, just with a fast test.
varies by restaurant I suppose. I've seen enough places with "ohne Test ohne Termin" out front which probably means the mandatory testing for closed spaces is not being enforced very strictly or at all.
I've read online that tests are no longer needed at the current incidence levels even indoors
Online meaning some newspaper website
makes sense
pretty incredible how drastically incidences plummeted in the past month
Incredible or mysterious??? :D:D:D
It's not mysterious, high temperatures and many many more vaccinated people, of which many second doses, create conditions unfavourable for corona
The period to watch out for will be September/October
Hello everyone! I would like to start the process of getting a Führerschein, what do I do?
if you're converting a foreign one I know all about it otherwise can't really offer you information.
but for cars you should be aiming for a Klasse "B" license
Was ist die durchschnittliche Miete, die man für eine Wohnung/WG-Zimmer in München bezählt? Ich fahre im September nach München für das Auslandsjahr (komme aus England). Weiß total nicht, was normal und was zu teuer ist
~~imagine your uni allowing you to go on exchange in covid times, sincerely a bitter brit 😔 ~~
tbh just apply to a driving school and they’ll inform u of what exactly u need and all that jazz
i paid 620eu/mo for a 22qm single apartment in a private studentenwohnheim, 750eu for a ~20qm studio apartment not targeted towards students, 500eu for a 15qm room in a 3er WG - now i live in an apartment from the studentenwerk and i pay 370eu/mo, which is incredibly cheap
use that info however you will
wirst du es auf Deutsch machen? Ich glaube, die Prüfer sprechen meistens nur auf Deutsch, aber es kommt darauf an, wo du bist.
How does the studentenwohnheim apartment compare to the private one? I don't expect it to be to the same standard but is it satisfactory?
Having lived in both it can vary drastically. What's important is your roommates and their habits (in regards to keeping everything tidy etc).
Whether or not they actually clean and are enjoyable to be around really makes or break a living situation.
In places with not a lot of students you can find normal apartments for around the same price or just a bit more than a WG, which I would choose every time regardless of roommates.
Also expect to pay a premium for newer apartments next to (and/or sponsored by) the uni. It really isnt necessary to live so close since German cities are so easily accessible via foot, bike, or bus.
thanks! I thought of asking to only see if that was the only way, but apparently it is and I found a fahrschule in my area that ill call tomorrow hopefully

Auf jeden Fall! Das wäre toll, obwohl arabisch und englisch wären ja einfacher.
und die sind auch in Berlin angeboten, beim Lernen auch meinte ich
not sure if that would even be a problem since they just ask two or three questions and give u directions which the instructor could probably translate anyway
provided they r able to translate
oh you mean for the practical test right?
yes
cause basel talked about the prüfer
who u only meet during the practical test
the theoretical test is available in different languages
Thanks for the info, I did not know that I'll only be meeting the Prüfer in the practical test

Einer wird auch bei der theoretischen Prüfung dabei sein, um sicherzustellen, dass keiner schummelt. Mein Prüfer ist mit einem Gerät hinter uns gelaufen, das elektromagnetische Wellen aufspüren konnte.
I'd like to ask some questions about living in Germany, but they're too private to post here. Can someone DM me if they're interested in helping me out?
bei mir wars tatsächlich auch der prüfer der in meinen praktischen prüfungen dabei war muss aber nicht sein
und wzf meiner hat sich einfach vorne hingesetzt und uns angestarrt
Hallo! Kennt jemand TestAs Prüfungen?
Hallo!
American here to ask if I become a citizen in either Germany or Switzerland coming from the US, Could i join either nations military?
Seems like a weird question but i have certain views and whatnot I'd rather not speak about. (As in before anyone asks "why not join the US military")
It’s possible to join under certain circumstances, I could only help you in the territory of Germany depending on the military Career you need prerequisites such as German Citizenship is very important without it is not possible, otherwise there is more to it like career and armed forces, for which you want to enroll. They have all the prerequisites the higher the so more or more difficult
Honestly I'm not the air force kind of guy and I'd probably join just to do any service I can, i definitely plan on moving and becoming a German citizen after I get both a scholarship here and enough money to make the move.
Would you like to talk about that in a Private call?
If it's voice chat give me a bit but if it's DMs yeah
can any budy lern me german im not speaking godd german im polisch
kk write me privately if you’re ready to make a call
Will do!
can any budy or nat
It will be hard for u to learn it that way. Someone should invest much time in that... it’s better to find a teacher to start with it. U can improve ur German by speaking and texting here :))
But u need some basics
We are ready to help u!
i can an little bit but i dont know what that means
ik sprize this say to me a friend
Can u write in German?
nou
chyba lepiej pytać w #general albo #questions, ale ja bym powiedział że lepiej abyś zaczął z jakimś polskim podręcznikiem do niemieckiego :^)
po polsku to w #other-languages , #general to angielski albo niemiecki
guys does anybody a website to practice for B1 listening (hören) exam ?
Hier findest du Beiträge und Hördateien, Aufgaben usw.
vielen danke
@jolly iglooOnly German citizens can join the Bundeswehr and other branches, also you would have to give up your American citizenship unless you have a direct blood relation to a German citizen.
if you're a foreigner looking to join a European military then the French Foreign Legion is probably your best bet, but they are very elite and operate in French if im not mistaken
I would give up my american citizenship no doubt.
you sure? you're forced to pay 10k USD or something and the whole process can be very dangerous/complicated
Yup, would rather live somewhere else than the US.
I have bit of a grudge against the US.
best of luck
Just to be clear: you need to be a German citizen before applying for the Bundeswehr. Also, if you'd join the Luftwaffe it's quite likely you'll train with US troops once in a while
And consider that the military isn't too prestigious / popular in Germany.
I'm more of a computer person if anything
So if I do become a German citizen and not keep my American citizenship I can join?
Also I know it won't be too prestigious but honestly after looking at some jobs i see they pay really well.
I have no clue how things are looking in Germany when it comes to demand for computer technician's but I'd expect it to higher than it is today in the future
As of Switzerland i don't think I'll be seeing that happen.
You'll more than likely earn more in IT if you have an advanced degree
That's what I'm going for here in the US
The plan for me is to get a degree here in the US, move to Germany, start the process of becoming a citizen there, get a job there in the meantime and live there and then when the time comes where I do become a citizen and if I want to strive further, then I'll turn to the military
it's pretty unusual. I think there would be very few Germans who would consider joining the Bundeswehr after obtaining a degree
Well I would go there now but I don't have any money, my SS card, or a state ID 😅
My best chance is to get a degree here, get a job until I can afford to move then make the move.
i mean, why do you wanna join the Bundeswehr? It's very rare the Bundeswehr would recruit someone with a degree outside a few specialties (medicine, law, geoinformatics)
well, anyway. good luck 🙂
It's more of a fallback when it comes to any financial situation. I want to ensure that once I am in Germany I don't go back to the US or have trouble stabilizing myself
Plus I'm just the type of guy who likes to help out in any possible way I can.
i mean once you are a German citizen that shouldn't be an issue
Huh, maybe a lot of my worries will disappear since I have to worry nonstop here in America with how atrocious things are
I think /r/germany has a wiki page that explains how to immigrate to Germany
I can't get it up right now but if you go to reddit.com/r/germany and go to the wiki you should be able to find it :)
Hello is there someone from switzerland?

if anyone could give 5-10 mins; it will mean alot thnx guyz for the support

I can ask about studying in your lovely country
So uh what is the requirements usually in university for students who want to study abroad?
in germany, generally language certificate, and a equivalent high school leaving diploma to the Abitur
for the bachelor
and there are other things
like minimum money in the bank for living costs
around 10,000 EUROS

Is anyone here applied for Duale Ausbildung, or know how to do it? Main question is how Berufschule providing study like this, is there a special papers im filling so they know that i will be working one week and attending lectures another week, and putting me in a group of other students like me?
If anyone can help, pls, dm me
Hi everyone. I'm planning to start a "sprachekurs" in Berlin on September, for 6 months. We are going to come together, with my 5 years long relationship partner. So i need to search places to stay. Is Airbnb best way to investigate or can you guys offer me some local and safe websites to have a look at it please? 🙂
You can check the website/app wg-gesucht.de. I think it's mostly for students and so maybe someone is doing a erasmus semester abroad and is willing to find a tenant for the time in between. But I'm not from Berlin
look for "Zwischenmiete"
or you can ask the university who is offering the Sprachkurs. You won't be the only one that need an apartment
which* sorry i'm bad at it 😄
Thank you very much, actually i didn't care where i live right now and never will; if my girlfriend won't come with me but now i have to care me and her. I mean i need a good place because with 2 people and limited money i have to find best Wohnung 😄
good luck with that, the whole living situation in bigger cities is quite .. difficult
I think Zwischenmiete is the best for you, because you stay only for a short time. But airbnb is also common
@warm finchI have experience with an Ausbildung. Yes it is typically split half lectures and half work but the exact ratio can vary greatly depending on the field. Typically you need to find a company which is willing to train you and offers a contract, then you can register at the Berufschule. But like I said, the exact technicalities vary by what the training is for.
I want to become a coder which course should I take?
Hello everyone,
I'm trying to book an appointment (in berlin.de) in order to apply for a resident permit, but there are no slots available. It's not even showing me a calendar view. Just the attached message.
Does anyone happen to know when is the best time during the day to refresh the page so that there will be new and free slots?
Thank you in advance.
not enrolling at TUB . what about you ?
Most uni application deadline this year is 30 july. You'll probably have to wait for a while, cause ofc, they gonna collect all applications, check, and if you fulfill all requirements then you might get the admission letter around 1 month after the deadline.
@exotic barn my documents on uni assit were evaluated and sent . but I didn't get any reply from university. so I emailed them . apparently deadline is extended upto july 30 so after that only university is likely to send a reply. has uni assit sent your documents?
YES ! one of the uni s applied for , I had a missing document. so the university gave me time till july 30th to submit it . it's good that they have extended it cause these are very hard time with the pandemic situation and all
Open VScode and start hacking. Work on whatever strikes your fancy. Wanna make a game? Fiddle around with pygame. A website? Write some html and add some javascript later. Programming is a skill best learned by practicing and not in courses.
hey also , the documents I uploaded to uni assit in the month of may were evaluated. after that in june also I applied for more universities but those applications are still in evaluation statues.. is it normal?
Sure thanks
I think so. Uni assist will contact you, once they forwrd your documents to the uni
just be patient, last year when i applied i didn't receive my evaluation until late August
Thankyou , I can understand but the panic is because as international students , the more time it takes for the university's to reply more time it take for us to start the visa process. that's why
You can take language courses in germany first. By doing so you can apply visa with the language course invitation
what kind of courses exactly? do you have a website link?
I think early mornings are your best bet, like between 5 to 8 AM. That's usually when people cancel their appointments and these are then made available on the website again. or so I've been told
Thank you very much. I'll try that :)
Is there a place to find some good base info for moving to study? Tryna join my partner in Germany and my best option afaik is a study visa
also is there a best school(s) to apply to as an international (american) student wanting to move to Germany and have an IT degree
or something equivalent. Large job market since everyone needs an IT guy

Bet thanks
Is it okay to call somebody in Germany on Sunday regarding renting the apartment?
IF I applied for a degree that starts in say, next September, could I apply for a visa to live in country at that point if I got accepted and move well before the semester starts?
the deadline for most universities is sometime in July or sooner I believe.
University of Applied Sciences Berlin has classes starting in April
only issue is I can’t read the application and the translator fucks it
is this a private uni?
🤷
Seemed nice
Only one I’ve looked into yet but figured why not shotgun applications out there? Lol
there are many university of applied sciences in berlin that's why
yeah I mean for the winter semester which is when a lot of programs begin
but spring is also possible
deadlines are strictly for the public university's, most private universities accept students at any time period of the year
Can I call a taxi in Germany if my car breaks down or gets confiscated by Polizei in a city?
companies like ADAC offer towing or will even repair it on the spot if possible
Hello everyone. Would like to ask..Anyone have any idea is nursing profession currently highly demand in German, Austria and Switzerland. If it is, what is the basic requirements..Would love to have some insight about this.. Thanks in advance...
i think there is a shortage of nurses at the moment, especially in the geriatric sector, but it's not my field so i don't really know anything useful sorry
Sehr gut! Danke
Personally, I think it's possible to get a taxi.
I see. Anyway..thanks for the info.. 😃
are there shortages for IT professionals?
of expert ones, yes
an Softwareentwickler, ja
there's quite a lot of inexperienced people, or those who have < 1 year of experience or did some bootcamp. Same goes for web/frontend. However there is a crazy shortage of experienced fullstack/backend engineers
Guys, could you recommend me a language course Berlin or somewhere else according to your personel experiences? Which one should i search? Budget: 250-300€ Monthly, B1-B2-C1 for 6 months will be good. Appreciate for your answers.
Volkshochschule usually the cheapest option
don't know specifically about Berlin though
i found Volkshochschule v good and they were definitely cheap
I believe even in some cases if you can't afford the course fee they will waive it.
however, they can be a bit hit or miss. Anyone can teach those courses and while they will try to vet for good teachers, bad ones might slip in. I've taught a couple courses in a VHS and i've had students complain about previous teachers
fair, but if you're looking for a cheap way to get your Niveau certification it works
oh yeah i'd definitely recommend it over more expensive courses
Trying to do an application to a German school via a translator app kinda sucks ngl
Yes btw. It's SRH Hochschule Berlin/
hallo
@scarlet void hu, what kind of uni is it, some special topics or so?
Just applied sciences so like
Basic skills for a job afaik
I’m wanting to do CS for IT
ah, alright, that's pretty similar everywhere. Do they actually have CS there?
just looked at their page, holy cow they are expensive
Seems more aimed at international students, so they should have the processes down 🙂
I don't know about you but personally for me it is very expensive 😶
I never said it wasn’t.
I just want to move
Everyone keeps saying it’s expensive so does anyone have alternatives?
All the ones I find say they’re cheap until you actually look so idk what to do
quality of education across schools here is largely equal so I would personally go for a public institution since theres no tuition
unless of course there's a specific program that only one or two unis offer
I appreciate^^
yup
I would rank public university > public applied science university >>> private stuff
For difficulty it's the other way around. At least for most tech things. If you do not wanna go into research there is not much of a difference though.
Is Hannover is good city for learning German language? I've heard that it is a student-city and social skills can be OK. And not a costy place. Can you guys confirm?
Pretty typical German city with a good amount of students, i imagine its fairly affordable like Niedersachsen is as a whole.
Yeah, we also speak the best and most proper German there. Real talk.
You mean, a reeeaalllll talk.
but isn't hannover expensive though?
I think you're thinking of Hamburg
no ,Hannover, 2020 summer I was looking for a dorm near university of hannover and literally every place was super expensive
because you were looking near the university
Idk what I’m doing wrong but the public universities I look at don’t offer anything but masters or German- spokenclasses
choosing a program is the most fun part imo, the visa was the most stressful for me
hello, question about applying at german university for a bachelor!
Quick background: I have already made a bachelor study in the USA and a master study in Germany.
What would be considered my 'Ersteinschreibung'? I thought my bachelor in the united states, since it was done before the master, but my roommate thinks maybe 'ersteinschreibung' only applies to degrees at german universities and should therefore be my master degree done here? Any opinions?
Anybody studying in Mannheim here?
choose a particular program and email the specific uni for their requirements
well , instead of emailing to the genral applicaiton / admission email of the university. try emailing to a specir person. eg : email to someone who is in charge of application handling. not the genral university email
I don't have contacts with TUB anymore as I have decided not to go there. its better if you can find a what's app number and text them .
also has uni assit evaluated your documents and is the applicaiton in okay states for TUB ?
Swiss students are so nice. Well spoken and amazing personalities. I wonder how they become like this. Haven't seen that in here.
I don't think that is possible to be honest. You don't have access to the emails of people working in the application department(?) at the university. Also the only way to get through is by contacting the telefonservice by email or calling them. There are definitely no whatsapp numbers through which you can reach anyone at the university. There is however an email for the Studierendensekretariat: ba.international@referat-1a.tu-berlin.de
take a look at this too: https://www.tu.berlin/studieren/bewerben-und-einschreiben/
Bewerben Sie sich für einen der über 140 Studiengänge, zur Promotion oder im Rahmen eines Austauschprogrammes an unserer Universität.
and if you've applied for an NC degree program, you might need to wait a while. Besides I think the deadline hasn't been reached yet
only after that do you get replies. And from what I remember TU Berlin doesn't send rejections through email, only through post.
hi i finish my career in chemical engineer and because think are slow i want to do a programming course but are bootcamp good enought or is better to do a course in edx or coursera that have university backening them? also what is more needing in europe a fullstack dev or a data science ?i like both to study
bootcamp, edx, coursera <- don't care. Degree + experience in form of real projects is far more important.
data science without stats/math background is kinda pointless I'd say, but quite a few times companies actually look for data analyst who can use Excel/Matlab to make some plots
fullstack dev - yes please, but that usually implies 5+ yrs of experience. Otherwise I'd focus on frontend or backend
i did some course in the university for statistics and database for the fun of it so i have some background is not like i am going to start from 0
i get that experience is better but starting to work without a certificate is hard at least your are lucky.
thank for the info
Hm. So when I hire for data scientists it's usually phd or equivalent work experience in quantitative field and publications in relevant journals or equivalent project experience. That's similar at the larger comps hiring data scientists.
Actually, software engineering is pretty nice, since certificates aren't valued that much
Have some actual projects on your github that are not cookiecutter "autonomous driving udemy course" projects? hell yeah, i won't care what degree you have / don't have
hey, i would like to ask if anyone had experience studying at "Sprachscule-Aktiv", how did it go and have you benefitted from the course? I plan on doing an online german course with them, would anyone recommend them? Thanks.
thank a lot @bold stump
guys if you get accepted into a Austrian university that teaches your desired program in english
in order to get the visa from embassy, do you still have to show german language proficiency, although the university doesnt require it?
Depends on the embassy's requirements
In my case proof of English language proficiency was sufficient such as IELTS or TOEFL
no there are ! I have done it myself. not for TUB but other universities. otherwise I wouldn't tell it .
no , they do through email!!!😶
im basically a third country national applying to austria, so im little confused with the D Visa and residence permit
it says that the reply can take upto 3-5 month for residence permit
athough i didnt submit my university application, should i just file the residence permit because 5 month waiting time and decision is really long
im little confused as to what my approach should be? cuz the admissions for spring semester are opening in september
i was thinking, maybe i should apply early so i can reach a decision quicker, before the semester starts..... any idea or suggestion guyz?
Will you not need the acceptance letter to apply for the visa? @fair jackal
Hey
when applying for Fachinformatiker, should i just put Office- sehr gut or should i list each like word excel blabla, or should i not even mention Office if im applying for IT?
cuz like its expected of me to know office if im applying for Fachinformatiker i guess?
what does a Fachinformatiker do?
is it like a programming position using stuff like Java, python etc?
Hallo! I would like to send a correspondence email to the university, do you guys have any suggestions when is the right time to send the email? like friday afternoon or sunday night or anytime you guys would recommend?
probably ASAP if you want a response in a timely manner, typically timeframe doesnt matter unless you're calling
Aah okay2 thanks!
For accommodation when companies request a "Guarantor's proof of income" does that guarantor have to be residing in Germany? Some explicitly request "Joinly liable person residing in Germany" but others are simply "Guarantor's proof of income"
@kindred hemlock you can try asking here
can anyone help/know about german visa
I’m a first year medical undergraduate student from India
Can anyone please tell me
What is the procedure of getting license to practice.... or Study Masters or Specialization in Medicine in Deutschland
?
Does anyone know when the start of the school year for Fachinformatiker anwendungsentwicklung is? Like when would i have to start working in the firma
Cuz it says ausbildung usually starts at either 1.8. Or 1.9.
Someone went to Germany with DAAD??
Thanks
You start working in the company on the date when your contract starts. It doesn't depend on the school, you can start working anytime
the start date and recruiting season for companies varies by industry, but a lot do start around August and September. Typically your contract begins once your courses do.
Helloooo guys, next week I’ll be travelling to Hamburg for my Studienkolleg, I wanted to ask if anyone here is from Hamburg or has stayed there. Ich warte auf Ihre Antwort Dankeee
Very cool
Hamburg is lovely have fun
Viele Baustellen.. but the people are nice, at least those who i asked directions from ☺️
hey guys , is there anyone who applied through uni-assit on JULY ? befour the deadline ofcourse.
depends on the Bundesland. Just ask your Employer.
Dankeeee🥰🙏
????
guys anyone still with having uni assist in evaluation statues for your application
Is the flooding bad in germany for you guys? or what. i heard something about that
Yeah the flooding killed very many people in selected regions, it really is a crisis
I think over a hundred
The flooding was so strong that even houses were swept away
😦
It happened concerningly close to me but we only had heavy rain with no noteworthy damage afaik
Realistically, how much rent would one need to pay for an apartment that's fit for a dog with a yard. 90+% of the offers I saw don't allow pets
this depends 100% on the area/city
Thought I typed it, Munich. Just a wide estimate though
the larger units in our building with a yard cost 700-900 euros I think, but it's a small city
What lvl german do u need to get into studienkolleg
B2
but then again it depends where you are going
I'm currently planning on joining the summer session.... And my A1 will end in like 3 weeks max... Do u think ill make. It
I want to do bachelor's in Cs.. Most of the public universities are fine by me.. But higher ranked would be better
Which summer session exactly?
and do you mean joining university or the Studienkolleg
Depending on the how frequent your German classes are, A1 takes between 1-2 months. A2 takes between 1-2 months. B1 takes 2-4 months. B2 takes 2-4 months.
Studienkolleg for summer 2022
Jan enrollment I think
definitely doable!
Are you currently doing studienkolleg or anythin... Wanted to know more on how it is
I am currently doing a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering
