In your head all is clear what you're asking / what's confusing you, but you're sharing just a few bits, we don't have the same pic :)
I see
Breathe
No need to be anxious here, no one is holding a knife on you
Contracts are super confusing especially when you read them partially
so, that’s the contract right
basically I’m charged 50€ for ‘Heizung’, included in my miete
well I can’t doxx myself can I 🤣
this is under clause 4.2
now what I’m really suspicious about, is how I’m charged €50 for heizung (in my miete) and then also charged €50 for my electricity by my flatmates
And confusing points are, let me guess, 2.10 and 2.13?
2.10 is lighting, elevator and stuff, yes
general area stuff like that
2.13 needs paragraph 14 to be totally clear
But, this isn't your heating costs
This are costs for heating system maintenance (roughly said) :)
50 eur electricity for 1 room is insane btw
exactly!
Heating could be normal, if the house isn't top notch in terms of energy efficiency
I’ve asked my landlord whether electricity is included in my rent or not, and he simply replied with a ‘Ja’
but then why would my flatmate still charge me for it? unless someone’s lying?
its not even a big room in the first place
Easiest way is to ask folks who want you to pay something - to show you the bill / contract
I pay around 80 eur for a flat with 2 computers, tv, 3 fridges (2 have freezers), dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and who knows what else, we spend around 3500 kWh yearly
However, our heating isn't on the electricity
And since we like to have 23-24 degrees, on 100 sqm flat in A/B energy efficiency class we pay I think between 50 and 100 (no clue, it is combined in the whole bill, but we had to pay additionally after the final calculation)
However in poor isolated room, 50 doesn't seem like impossible fot heating
Stuff is easy, you have numbers in the contract you've signed
Electricity for your light in your flat isn't there under nebenkosten
Your main tenant has that contract in their name, they have the amount
Also, you're not paying for just your room, but also washing machine and fridge and stuff, so, ask for the contract to see and explanation how the costs are divided (per people, per private area ratio)
Heating is explicitly said it is not included in the contract you've signed
So, nothing wrong is that you have to pay for the heating and electricity for your flat
Question is only what is the real consumption and how you determine the part for each person
So, what you were told, how much this things cost, and did you sign it?
now thats where the issue comes in
Give the benefit of the doubt here that your communication skills together weren't the best
So he might mean communal electricity and you meant flat
you see back in my homeland I wasn’t the one to take care of the contracts, because long story short my parents hired an education agency to take care of everything
so the contract was never ran through me 😬
Usually it's easy - what did you sign and what was stated for amounts
Plus things that were stated without amounts, they have their contracts which can be shown
So, with honest people isn't too hard to figure all things out
You mean this contract we're discussing about?
I’m afraid this might be the case, yeah
yes
Ok, let's go in private message, and send me everything you have, and you signed (or someone in your name), this bits and pieces is a bit tiring :)
would that really be alright? I wouldn’t want to burden you any further
However, I'd say, amounts could be questioned, but the principle is ok, electricity and heating are per individual consumption eg for that specific flat
Send :)
I'll switch to my laptop, easier for the papers
hi, i'm wondering about the situation of working while studying in germany
..because i'm aspiring to study there but would have to finance myself, so i'm wondering if there's a way around the only working 20hr a week thing?
I read that you can work more, but then you'd have to be registered as an "adult", not a student; do some people actually do this, or is it not worth it at all?
most courses at a German university are equivalent to full time jobs, working more than 20h a week is just not possible most of the time
but if it's doable?
depends on your course load, plenty of people i know work a minjob in addition to their studies. Your student visa allows it after all.
you're supposed to have financed your studies already with the blocked bank account before receiving the visa anyway.
EU citizens don't need a visa
If you work more than 20h a week you'll be (most likely) unable to keep up with the expected learning, pushing your graduation further and further into the future; many courses have also limits on how often you can push tests forward
hmm ok, thank you for the information!
do EU citizens still need proof of financing?
not sure
Only non-EU citizens if this website is correct
Do you guys have any suggestions for somewhere I can buy second hand textbooks from or for cheaper? I need to get a bunch of books so I'd rather avoid dropping over 15€ per book ||because think of all the snacks I could buy with that||
I need specifically the Stark Abi Training Physik Mechanik and Mortimer das Basiswissen der Chemie at the moment. Any and all suggestions appreciated:purple_heart:
have you checked amazon?
or thalia too
sometimes they have used books
there's medimops too
@exotic barn which country?
I heard of this thing called a Europass CV, is it mendatory to have our CVs written in this format for university and job application purposes in Germany?
check out abebooks - it's what i use to buy uni textbooks used
no
(europass was meant to be this "standardized across the EU" thing but you should only really use it if the employer specifies you must and otherwise just follow standard german resume format)
what keyword should i put in to look for the standard German resume format?
"lebenslauf"
Thanks!
Mikey! o/
And also, is a picture mandatory?
my experience is that most employers expect one, yeah
Ahh okay :/ i guess I don't need one for my visa application since they'll have my photos attached anyway
is travel from Netherlands to germany restricted currently??
The virus.
Last time I checked you could only travel for non-tourism purposes but it's been a month nearly since so I'm not so sure. You can google it i guess
🇩🇪
@shadow ibex @wise obsidian thanks! Those definitely helped. I'm honestly surprised books just cost so much here. The Chemie one will cost me like 70€ at the cheapest 🥲 i can already feel my soul passing away. Is that really normal. I don't think I've ever bought a book that cost more than 14€ (brand new at that)
@grave urchin you are only supposed to traverse the border for essential purposes but I personally haven't seen any border controls as someone who lives very close to the border.
the buses which go across the border are ramping up restrictions though, apparently you can only ride with a negative corona test not older than a day or so.
Well, you could definitely check your city libraries. You could photocopy up to 70% of the books no problem, I think.
@exotic barn ebay Kleinanzeigen or if you have a uni nearby, you could try asking in facebook groups for chemistry students there
do you necessarily need the physical copy
university books tend to cost a lot. But there are usually many ways around buying them
as Enzyme suggests, you could photocopy one. You could also find a pdf online, borrow one from your uni's library or buy it second-hand
i'm rather opinionated on this and would just find a pdf of it. If they want people to buy them legally they should price them where humans can buy them. Studying shouldn't be a rich-people-only thing
I certainly agree with that. I definitely do not pirate all my books or anything though ;)
i did find the Chemie Buch online but no luck finding the Stark Abitur Training Physik Mechanik and Linder Biologie SII yet.
I'd honestly not buy any books if they weren't required in class lol
libgen/zlib is your friend!
I will be dropping by there soon so I think I'll be checking it out along the way thanks!
I've been married to them for 5 years now
Fr i will sell my soul to whoever runs that site
Unfortunately they don't have the books I need this time
I found books for really cheap on ebay. But how do I confirm its not a scam or that the books are actually intact? It felt a bit too good to be true
tell me i might be able to find it
STARK Abitur-Training - Physik Mechanik: Grundlagen und Aufgaben mit Lösungen (neu bearbeitete Auflage 2011 Auflage) and Linder Biologie SII: Gesamtband SII: Sekundarstufe 2 :))
@strong sky it's alright if you can't find it btw. i searched all over too. Thankful for the help in any case 💜
no worries ill try!
Hallo! I'm looking for any native German speakers who would be willing to do a culture interview for my university assignment. It'd be a short 15 minute interview, anyone interested please directly message me!
Is it difficult to join Uni-Heidelberg?
Something says me that it is like an Elite Uni in Germany
I'm currently 15 yo and I'm looking for a place there
Hey, guys.
Depends for which subject
Biologie?
should probably just check their website for admission information, but if its STEM it's probably restricted (NC)
wha does STEM means¿
Science Technology Engineering Maths.
I'm quite stupid but I love biosciences in general
well, I think I must prepare myself since now to go there
:(
you should have a read through this: https://old.reddit.com/r/germany/wiki/studying
r/germany: English-language discussions and news relating to Germany and German culture.
Does anyone know if you can do an Ausbildung and study for a Bachelor's at the same time? Like if you can legally do it but also if you know someone who actually does it like that
No, both are full time jobs. There are some programs that combine university with a job, but in general no
There is duales studium where you work and study at the same time.
Ausbildung and Universität at the same time makes no sense imo.
Anyone know if any of the mobile networks in Germany let you add an extra data bundle to your contract for a month?
Hello, I am trying to fill a form for longer stay permit in Austria and... I have this "Wohnhaft in Österreich seit (TT.MM.JJJJ)" and I do not know if I should put date of my arrival or date of me getting apartment?
i imagine they want the date of your anmeldung there 🤔
I'm still looking for any Native speakers interested! Please dm me even if you're just curious about the project!
Can I just walk into a bank and ask them for change? For example if i want 50€ broken into 10x 5€. Is that a thing or will I get looked at weird?
Or is there any other place I can do that safely? Like the post office or supermarkt?
Hey guys, has anyone got a few minutes to help me wrap my head around working visa requirements?
The big problems I'm having at the moment are -
Must the contract be full-time or is it salary based?
Is there a grace period between jobs if it goes sour?
Vielen Dank ❤️
Yes, most banks should do that. Also when you buy something in a supermarket you can ask nicely and they'll probably do it too (I've done that before)
I don't know if there's a requirement for it to be full time or not, but there is definitely a salary minimum (what exactly it is depends which visa you're going for and which industry you're working in)
but a lot of the specifics depend on the specifics of your situation (qualification, industry, etc.)
unrelatedly, I just signed a rental contract today 👏
I am
No I'm from.the US
Awesome that's a great place to start, thankyou!
What is language requirements for ausbildung in Germany ?
the actual program requirements vary, typically there is no formal language requirement. But for the Ausbildung Visa you must have at least B1 German.
Is blocked account necessary ?
some proof of livelihood is yes
I mean financial requirements
yes chances are if you are coming into the country a blocked account is your only option
Can indian do ausbildung in Germany ?
anyone can as long as you meet the requirements, but it will be entirely in German
I think there might be a few in Turkish in select major cities but they are rare
What kinds of ausbildung you are doing ?
Landwirt or farmer
How much months i can learn German b1 level if l start from zero ?
well I personally wouldnt rush it, but I'm sure if you study consistently its perfectly achievable within a year or less
depends on the program, but typically its half practical work at a company and half courses
Is ausbildung really good ? What your opinion ?
well you get practical experience while earning money, usually more than most uni students earn part time
if it's a field you're interested in and you see yourself working there a while I would do it. Afterwards you can go on to a Meisterbildung but there are other paths as well such as uni after working in the industry for some time
Thank you! 💜
@exotic barn no idea tbh lol, i would prolly try to pick them up personally
if you're on Kleinanzeigen then chances are they're in your area. If its normal Ebay, you can check to see if a seller is verified and has ebay buyer protection
Oh okay. Danke!
Why we need blocked account in ausbildung if company give me stipend ?
its really not enough to live by, the minimum wage does not apply for Azubis
i have a question, i'm looking to move to Germany from america, what are some things that i would need to move, and how could i stay?
r/germany has a wiki about studying/moving/etc. I can give you bits and pieces of my personal experience here but the subreddit's information is probably more accurate.
maybe you should make your German ability better...
Anyway you have to adapt to the language and the society there
Wie lang wird es brauchen, um nach C1 von etwa B2 lernen, würde ich in Deutschland für einen Masterstudiengang zu studieren wollen.
depends on you. i found the biggest push from B2 to C1 came from cramming a bunch of vocab. the grammar isn't particularly difficult except one or two bits you need to practice.
it took me maybe 6 months to go from rusty B2 to very comfortable C1
but that was living in germany and having spent a lot of time learning vocab while my grammar knowledge rusted
Looks like I will be moving to Germany then.
right, and i plan, doing that, But i feel like my girlfriend, and being around more german folk would help yes?
if you don't put the effort in then you won't get results out
it's perfectly possible to live in germany for X years and not be able to speak the language / barely speak to germans (because you stay in bubbles)
You have to actually make the effort to talk to people
Something I did in Germany was literally approach random people on campus and just introduce myself and ask them politely if I can chat with them in order to practice my German
bold move
(results may vary outside of universities)
this is precisely my experience too lol
the older folk are so down to earth and friendly
i plan on learning as much as i can before moving for sure\
Those are just generalizations based on your own experiences. I’ve never met a rude (young) German by just talking to them.
The people I met/approached were all actually pretty cool.
When it comes to older folk I’ve had mostly positive experiences with them as well. The only exception being one of my roommates who was a complete asshole.
He must have been like 30 years old but decided to go back to college
He complained about the kitchen smelling (like food) but he was a smoker, the irony
in my experience
Right, exactly
and yes i can't tell you about every single diversified experience i had with each and every german individual sorted by age and social class, it would be rather impractical
i never claimed otherwise
Nate! o/
soup
Those are just generalizations based on your own experiences.
i never said objective reality is the way i perceive it and in no other way. I don't see why you would make this comment if not to diminish mine
That statement was not meant to be understood as aggression.
It also wasn’t me assuming that you didn’t know that
It’s just what came to my mind
The point was just for anyone else reading this to understand that everyone has different experiences. Saying „young people are rude af“ throws all young people (in this case young German people) under the Bus.
ok, just a misunderstanding ig
At the end of the day, it was what worked well for me, but that doesn’t mean it will work for you, or anyone else.
well yes, one would assume the reader is mature enough to know that everyone speaks their mind according to their own personal experience by default unless they report someone else's words. I don't think putting a disclaimer on every single statement would be practical
This is getting a bit off-topic now I think, but, statements can also be interpreted in multiple different ways, regardless of if one originally wanted them to be or assumes that everyone reading understands exactly what is being said (in my personal experience, I have found that if I don’t use any disclaimers, that I am often misunderstood).
Just wanted to add to anyone interested, I found that people in Bayern are more friendly than in Niedersachsen ans NRW
Despite what I often heard about them
probably
I found them to be more outgoing overall.
Since I am from Niedersachsen: the stereotype is that we are way more unfriendly than anyone from farther south 😉
Does anyone know what is this meme-video? Tell me if it rings a bell (:
"Das legendäre Video von Wito, Wito, kann man eigentlich sein?! Kann man sein?!"
Anyone Using Commerzbank, What is the difference between girocard and mastercard? I got both of them when I opened an account. Even on gircard there is sign of maestro. Mastercard is quite a plastic and transparent. Any purpose? Should I cancel Mastercard if it is useless?
girocard is not a credit card, it's a card to charge your account directly, mastercard is a credit card
@tight kelp it's mastercard debit written in the card
its normal, N26 also offers a maestro girocard and a mastercard debit card
I'm not sure what the point of having both is. I only have one
some places don't accept girocards (e.g. booking airplanes)
it's hard to use girocard to buy stuff online, for example 😅
paydirect is accepted by most online stores
I disagree about 'most'
It definitely depends on the store
I can't say when last time I saw paydirect offered, in my experience it's visa, mastercard, paypal, sometimes klarna/sofort, sometimes auf rechnung, sometimes the one where you pay in advance on their iban
as long as there's paypal you're good though, because you can use your girocard for paypal
(though at that point your card is just a thing with your bank coordinates on it)
if you still didnt get it,
girocard can only be used offline (ATM, groceries, shopping at the store)
mastercard can be used online
lots of transactions are just done using SEPA in germany or using paypal so you usually dont need a mastercard, but it's nice to have one for cases where paypal cant be used
i noticed we didn't cover the disadvantages of credit/debit cards though
they usually cost money to have (like a yearly fee), but there's also other stuff you have to be aware of. Like credit cards can let you pay for more than you have in your account, which can lead to debts. They often also have options to pay stuff immediately but only charging your account the next month, but you pay interest on the amount spent.
Oh also many places both online and offline have a fee for credit card payments
i had a lot of trouble getting a paypal open for my girocard actually
in the end i gave up because it kept having errors when i tried to link the card...
interesting 🤔 what kind of problem was it?
i don't remember the text - basically paypal was just like "sorry, there's an error right now and we can't connect your card. please try again later"
but of course every time i tried it didn't work.
Thank you everyone on this channel for every help. Being a newbie in Germany I was able to get all my answers from this channel. 😊
First time I asked about working student in Group for Which I also received contract recently. Can anyone give me insight of taxes as Working student if it pays more than 900
paypal connects direclty to bank account, not girocard
well yes but the girocard only has the coordinates of the bank account, it's not a separate thing, just a "label" for it, so to speak
so saying "using a girocard" and "using your bank account" is effectively the same
Except that a Girocard may need a PIN and there can't be any refunds. Whereas if someone does a SEPA direct debit with your bank account (like PayPal), there HAS to legally be an 8-week dispute period.
Has anyone been to a drive-thru testing station (for covid) recently?
What's the situation in Germany now? Is it over? Do people get their vaccinations? Are the stores open normally now? I checked dw.com, but they focused on India lately.
I don't get the promise that everyone can get their vaccination from Hausartz next month.
It's not like the supply/other problems will be solved magically next month.
Perhaps I misunderstood something.
We're in hard lockdown (don't know what is closed, but non food/drogerie need the test from that day to enter or is just click&collect, not sure which is active now), and have a curfew - 22-24h allowed only alone outside, 24-5 only with extra reason and alone (eg walking dog)
Whole country
In comparison, Switzerland which has higher incidence has recently opened restaurants on teraces...
Do people avoid Astrazeneca vaccines? I heard people in other countries do it.
No clue
If I remember correctly, supply is still low enough that whoever is allowed or want cannot yet get the shot, so, we haven't reached the stage where there is an abundance of AZ but not other and unvaccinated people who want to get vaccination but not AZ
in short, there are more people who want vaccination of any kind so those who are avoiding AZ are just waiting longer or something
I mean, I guess there are folks who avoid it
Just nothing that would be showing in numbers yet
German government is handling this situation so badly... I feel so drained by their regulations that change like every week and yet there is no improvement. I can only imagine how stressful it is to run a small business rn ...
It will fuel more anti-foreigner sentiment unfortunately.
Especially anyone who looks Chinese.
haven't seen or heard anything about this in germany
i'd guess that's more a US thing
yeah that's not really a think as far as i know. "Covid is the chinese virus" is stuff from early 2020
Some rules have zero sense nor are backed by science, but are just arbitrarily done, probably in order to show that they are doing something
Which then leads to people being tired of it all, and starting ignoring them, then they invent new one and we're in vicious circle
Like, we know for a fact that risk of getting it in the open air is really low. No matter of the time of the day, virus does not care about time of the day. So, why they impose curfew?
But that's politics now...
Improvement is 'it's not getting worse', especially when new strains came
I actually think that USA folks did it a bit better because they were terrified of health care costs
At least friend who lives in NYC told me that city is empty, like ghost town empty
Berlin, at least area where I live is always full with people, ok not crazy crowded but you do get a feeling of 'business as usual'
Even now with all those lockdown measures
In Germany you don't pay for it directly (for some reason people tend not to perceive those automatic salary deductions), so you don't care
In CH you pay significant amount yourself first, so you have some incentive to be less careless
At least that's my current theory, that direct payment for health care could make people take the measures more seriously 😂
hey, i need to ask some questions of someone who has moved from the US to Germany please
whats up
can i dm you?
if thats okay
i'm overwhelmed, i'm not sure what to do first, or if i'm even going to be able to do it, and its frightening, because its what i want most
no worries just add me
hi everyone, anyone knows how getting care for corona in germany works?
should you check in yourself to a hospital, or is there another avenue?
Get used to it mate because that's their plan for the following times. It's called organized chaos. It will make many people lose faith in their authorities and plunge everything more down.
Is it something specific to US citizens or you would mind sharing ?
Mind ifni dm you?
I think even in this case your main point of contact is your GP, they'll tell you what to do next
This is current list of restrictions for Berlin as far as I know
Sure do
i cant figure out how to apply for T course studienkolleg, tu berlin
on the TU berlin studienkolleg page it says apply via uni-assist, however there is no t-course under TU berlin in uni-assist when i went to check it
nevermind found it
odd process
if anyone needs this info in the future heres a link
Hallo
@kind trout Hallo, kann ich helfen?
Has anyone with an American citizenship and a residence permit in Germany traveled between the countries during the pandemic? My parents are really wanting me to visit, haven't seen them in almost 2 years, but I'm terrified of getting stuck in the states not being able to return into Germany. The rules seem a little bit complex, so also if anyone has any resource or non-emergency phone number where I could clarify this matter, I would really really appreciate it.
hey everyone, does anyone know about how credit transfers work in germany?
Hello, are there any international students doing a bachelor's in Germany who are non-native English speakers?
You could just ask your question right away, and if anyone knows anything they'll probably be able to help you out better.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Just wondering about the experiences they had with applying to universities in regards to having to take a TOEFL/IELTS exam
I personally didn't have to submit a TOEFL/IELTS exam myself. I am studying however in German. I also applied with a British equivalent of Abitur (British A levels) and I don't know if that made a difference.
I am a non-native English speaker
Did you take any German courses prior to applying for your specific degree?
I've just started learning the language and there are a few programmes that I'm interested in applying for, some are fully in English while others are taught in German & English I'm just unsure on how to approach the language barrier(s) in terms of application.
I speak English better than my mother-tongue too lol but I have no idea if it'd be acceptable to just apply with my results and not an English level exam as well.
It really depends on where you're applying and what you're applying for, from what I gather.
I took a 9 month German language course and an exam, then I was eligible for study in Germany. My school education was enough for me to study at a university in Germany right away.
What do you plan on studying and where?
Ah I see, if you don't mind, what level did you reach?
I'm still wavering and haven't decided between either Psychology at Leuphana University or Cognitive Science at Osnabrück University
I think I was around B2 or C1 at the time. I was preparing for the TestDaF.
Thank you so much for the information!
I'm assuming you don't have a German Abitur, do you have a university entrance qualification from your country:
https://www.uni-assist.de/en/tools/glossary-of-terms/description/details/university-entrance-qualification-hochschulzugangsberechtigung/
I'm aware of that, thank you!
Still in progress, I haven't graduated yet so I don't qualify as of now because the Covid situation delayed school etc.
Oh okay, you could check from now just to make sure you have the right subjects and stuff. Anabin and DAAD are great websites for that, Anabin is however is available only in German.
I've been using DAAD, quite resourceful yeah. Almost everything is at your disposal on the internet, but it's a little different when it comes in comparison to people's experiences or first-hand knowledge.
What are you studying if you don't mind me asking?
I'm studying mechanical engineering, currently in my 3rd semester
Don't mention it!
Remember when you were going afk for a week
is there anyone from germany
loads of people lurk, just ask your question 😉
Lol I meant during the evenings and late nights, morning is for the hustle
haaaha
Yeah yeah sure
credit transfer doesn’t works in germany. You unenroll from one university and enroll in other.
thats not true, typically you can contact the department head for your major once you enroll and apply for a higher semester
depending if your credits satisfy lower courses
credits work on a european level within the eu (don't know if there are exception countries though)
credit transfer does work but not automatically since curriculums aren't standardized. The target department will help you map 'old courses' to 'new courses' whenenver possible or in some cases just allow you to take the exam without pre-conditions (e.g. when you had mathematics for physicists I in the old university but the new uni does not have the course it might allow you to take the mathematics I course exam directly)
anyone here taking Pharmazie mit Staatsexamen or pharmaceutical sciences (or honestly any zulassungbeschränkter Studiengang) as their major and don't mind me dm-ing them? :^)
On average, is using an Internetcafé more economical than having to pay internet bills in Germany?
Internet? In Germany?
interesting question, but this will depend 100% on yourself. First off, can you get to an internet café without spending money to get there, or how much do you have to spend to do it? Even if it's free, do you value your money more than the time you need to get there and come back? How much time, or how many times, do you need to access the internet? That will impact how much it would cost you to use it. There are also other drawbacks for depending on internet cafés such as you can't be sure if their computers are safe from spyware or other malware, the hardware or internet speed might be too limiting for you, they might put other limitations on what you can do with their computer etc.
This is kind of a non-answer but unless you only need the internet occasionally, having your own connection is probably always better. If you only need it for little things you can get away with only using your phone's internet, you can easily use its connection from a computer or laptop if need be, and that's almost certainly cheaper than relying on internet cafés, since you will surely have some sort of plan for your phone and basically all plans include at least some internet
No no, that's actually a really good answer, thanks a lot!
All in all, I think you're right, the benefits of having internet of my own are too great in comparison, and I'll need to use it very often because of university. Oh, and the bills for internet are around €30, right? I think I can manage to afford that.
yes they're around that, depending on your area and how much speed you need. I think usage-based plans are kinda gaining popularity again, it might be a good option for you. Though if you only need it for research and not anything heavy (like programming, streaming or playing games) having a decent internet plan on your phone and using it on your computer might be the most economical option
having a decent internet plan on your phone and using it on your computer might be the most economical option
Yeah, that's a good idea! Danke nochmal! :)
It's worth noting that if you're short on cash and in uni...there's a good chance that a WG or a Studentenwohnheim will be an economical (and common) living option in Germany. There, the internet costs will almost certainly be split among the flat-mates, you will not have to shoulder a plan yourself.
Oh, that's great to hear! I indeed am planning on living in a Wohngemeinschaft.
Our plan with Vodafone is 20 € a month, its decent speed but unless you're willing to pay a huge premium most internet here is kinda mediocre compared to places like the US.
Does a gasthaus have to be a restaurant and hotel/motel too or can it just be a restaurant? And if yes, can rasthaus be used as a restaurant?
I think Gasthaus can be anything from an inn to just a restaurant.
Gasthof to my knowledge is kind of a mix between Bauernhof and Gasthaus/Gastätte.
As in it's not just a Gasthof but attached to a farm.
hey
i would like an advice please, i want to apply for the dsh. can someone suggest a good school that offers dsh vorbereitungskurs?
vorbereitung and the actual prüfung when possible
http://dsh.de/dsh-vorbereitungskurse here’s a list of some possible unis. The prices mentioned there are not necessarily true (i paid less) and whether the course is good depends mostly on you. @odd coyote
thank you. i think this list is outdated tho. my uni (which is on the list) has stopped offering for this semster.
Hello! There was no warm water in my apartment today at roughly 03:08. I found this:
Gibt es nach 22 bis 7 Uhr kein Warmwasser mehr, begründet dies 7,5 % Mietminderung (AG Köln WuM 1996, 701);
Can someone tell me if it’s accurate?
Is it every day or just once? Did you tell the owner and give him a chance to repair it?
Well, it isn't warm when I woke up today. It happened for the first time today. Let me file a complaint.
Hello, so im confused about something going on with my car. I was going through the car papers looking at the services that the previous Owner did and i came upon the TUV paper. it said that the next inspection is Juni 2021. thats the problem now, because in the license plate it says december 2021
can someone tell me, if it is a mistake or that is how it is supposed to be

Hi leute
Wie geht's
I have a question, if anyone have any insight, and present it, I would be more than grateful
Well I am studying the german language currently, had done 1.5 year in one of the goethe courses, reached B1.2 level. However it has been 1 year since my last interraction eith the german contents, which is the reason I am trying to revise, and down the path, maybe enrolling in a german language course before the exam.
But I am wondering what are my options in the 2 scenorio
First; let's say I have passed the exam for C1 lecel successfully. What can I do with that? I must say that at the moment, I am studying in electronics branch in a university, and there is 2 months before I finish my first year)
I am intending to join in the exchange program provided by the erasmus program to study in germany for a year, maybe. Which contributions would the german-language certuficate make to me getting in the high-rank technical universities?
The second scenorio- a situation in which I dont have any german-language-proficiency- certificate. Is there any chance I can get admitted to a techinal university in germany, but not, like, doing 1 year of studying, perhaps leaving my current university to study the rest of my left years in germany
I know it is a bit long; but tried my best to express my thoughts, and articulate 'em
If something didn't make sense, please don't hesitate to ask
Cut to the chase, I intend to study in germany, what kinda path should I follow?
whether a C1 certificate helps you get into an exchange place will depend on your university's procedure for assigning exchange places. for example at my uni your language ability doesn't matter - only your grades. once you're assigned to that uni, based on your grades, you have to prove B2 proficiency with either a certificate or an exam in the languages department.
Okay thanks, but does each university has its own procedure for applying in exchange program? Or there is a group of university which follow the same layout for the particular matter?
Btw, pardon me, I don't have much of info about this stuff. The questions might sound dumb
Are you studying in germany at the moment ?
my exchange has been cancelled two years in a row because of corona, so no
each university has its own procedure. you need to ask your university what procedure they follow.
Guys whats the warranty rules like in germany? I was going to buy a pc from a guy on ebay-kleinanzeigen, he has used it for about 5 months. He said the parts had 2 years of warranty on purchase (He has used online sites) and there is rest garantie for 1 year and 7 months. Is this actually transferrable to me, if i buy it second hand from him? Or does the contract is void from his sale onwards?
Even if what he says is true about the warranty I am doubtful it is transferable, I don't think Saturn or Mediamarkt allow that. But I suppose it depends on the store.
Best to ask for all the warranty details from him.
I want to find an internship in Germany for this summer (molecular biology area), but im not sure how things work there.
I would be receiving an erasmus grant (~550 euros monthly), but of course this isnt much and i would appreciate any kind of compensation.
Does anyone have any experience? What should i expect?
You need the bill if you want to make use of that warranty
what kind of things are you wondering about?
i did an internship and it was a fairly standard process - find postings, send CV (german CV expectations are a bit different to UK/US), do interview, get offer, go to germany...
mind you, i'm not in biology 😅
i meant, how difficult is it to do a paid internship
you mean how difficult it is to find one?
really going to depend on your field, tbh. i found that for my area (informatics) there were loads of adverts and i had interviews from 3 out of the 4 places i applied for
Im filling an application form rn and theyre asking for expected salary, ofc im not writing any numbers but i really have no idea
Ok, thank you
expected salary i usually put 0, which isn't "i'm happy to do this unpaid", but rather "i'm not giving you a number"
hey guys, I’m super confused
I went to the doctor a month ago, but until now I still haven’t received a bill in my mailbox
should I call them? my visit was privately insured so it definitely shouldn’t be taking this long
routine visits and stuff that is covered by insurance doesn't cost you anything. I never got any bill for visits to the doctor
Hi, where can I buy a pillow in Germany? i.e. what store chains
no they have lots of household stuff, like kitchen utensils, skin care products, make-up, cleaning material...
and also stuff like snacks and tea
Found out that it only works if the bill is anonym, is that true? So second owner has no claim to anything
i don't know the law about it but as long as you have proof of buying the product you can claim warranty. Just make sure the guy gives you a bill or proof of purchase for the computer
well its covered by those reimbursement style insurance
so I’m pretty sure I should have gotten a bill, right?
oh, then i'm unfamiliar, sorry. I think it's fine to ask the insurance whether you should have expected something different or if there's an issue
is there a reason lots of germans go to mallorca?
HAHAH its just a beautiful and warm place
So I'm about to travel back to Germany soon. How can I inform myself on whether that is possible/what needs to be done before I travel and after I travel?
bandwagoning. People go to a place, like it, spread the word and before you know it it becomes a national thing
i see
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, restrictions are in place for entry into Germany from many countries. Persons entering Germany from risk areas or by air must complete a digital entry registration, undergo mandatory testing or provide proof of immunity, and comply with quarantine regulations.
Thanks!
mod ban. use of harsh language
well you can say "fuck" but don't insult others
aw, i didn't even get to see the insults 😔
they said "fuck u🖕🏾", such a hateful person.. 😔
its sad that some have to be that rude
x3
are siren warnings supposed to go off today
i didn't hear anything 👀
my bad
never heard them ever lmao
Siren warnings? For a drill or testing?
Any idea where one could get these in Germany? They are called pva mops I think
I've only ever seen these
fairly sure i've seen mops like this in Real
Thanks I've only checked in Rewe and DM/Rossmann
hello, so I am planning on changing the flat in the near future (maybe next year or year after that) and I am wondering if I will have to pay double rent (one for old flat and second for new if I find one) if I move during notice period (3 months) and not after it ends?
same with bills for media
you can also try Tedox
it mostly depends on the landlord of the new place. They may allow you a time to get settled in (probably not a full month if at all) where you'll have access to the flat. Imo though you'll most likely have to pay double for one month.
When i moved i didn't need to but my move was literally "go back and forth with the ubahn bringing all the things over" because i had no furniture of mine. I had i think about a week of "early access" to the new flat; the contract was already signed of course, and this time was before the start of the first month i'd have to pay rent for), during which we painted the walls, brought over all our stuff and waited for/assembled the ikea furniture we had ordered.
if they allow you this kind of grace period, you can get everything ready to move by that time, move during the grace period and already be living in the new place by day 1 of the first month of rent, paying no double rent
@tight kelpthx for info... I wonder if my current landlord (which is kind of maklerfirma) would be helpfull, because my reason to change is more like getting bigger kitchen and stuff than having troubles with landlord..
the new landlord is the one you need to worry about
in my experience you may need leeway from both
every situation has the potential to be entirely unique, try to not compromise and get the best for yourself, thats including asking yourself what consequences (doppelmiete, stress, time) you can live with
yeah having to rush my move was stressful af. In hindsight, in a pinch i would probably prefer to pay one month of double rent in exchange for being able to move at my own pace. Not that i had the resources to do that back then :P
I dont intend to rush but also want to make it as painless as possible and as much expensive as needed. I also will need to find some company to move my stuff (have furniture) which will be huge challenge in all this
as much expensive as needed
you probably didn't mean to write what you wrote 👀
if you have friends to help out, you can rent a van for a day and do everything much more cheaply than hiring a company
@tight kelpI dont have friends whom I would trust here lmao so there is no other way 😛
ich lebe über dem dach
I have been seeing these kartoffelpyramide's in German gardening channels lately, is it a German thing? Searching it on google "potato pyramid" didn't land me any results. Any place where I can read about them in English? Are they for farming more potatoes for a tighter garden?
i dont know but i just googled it and found this https://www.garden.eco/potato-growing-box
seems to be the same @random skiff
omg thank you so much that's what I was looking for, just had to find the word huh
👍 np
Spargel and Kartoffeln are the German way of life
So how's the lockdown/corona situation in Germany?
It's screwed in the head
What does that mean?
It’s bad
We've been in and out of lockdown several times, theres severe miscommunication between the federal and local governments. Within the same week businesses were told they can open, then they must close, then they can open again but only with appointments. It's just been a bureaucratic mess but thats kinda normal here. At least where I am places are opening back up but you can only shop with an appointment and negative corona test. Vaccines are finally starting to roll out to the people other than the 1st risk group but it's still much later than places like the US.
I guess it'll be over soon then.
Hopefully, some cities like Mainz instated a curfew but that recieved huge backlash. The Netherlands tried a similar policy but it just resulted in riots.
Lot of Germans are actually making day trips to Holland because they've relaxed the restrictions.
I find the required tests in particular very frustrating because not only is it inconvenient since you need a prior appointment but those quick tests have been proven to be inaccurate.
Seems the government is not doing a great job.
They must be really unpopular these days.
I think the the Greens have gained popularity but I dont have much confidence in them either. Stuff like the curfew, requiring covid tests, and only surgical and FFP2 masks allowed in business weren't based in logic they were just desperate attempts for the government to make themselves look like they're doing something.
... would you have preferred no safety measures at all?
Ffp2 masks make scientific sense
Curfew doesn't
Especially, outdoors are proven to be safer than indoors
Covid tests will catch only those who are infected for some time, which is better than nothing
But this new 'vaccinated and negative tests are equal' makes zero sense
Negative test is about 'we think you won't infect anyone'
Vaccination is 'you won't get seriously sick', but you still easily can have covid and asymptomatic one
However, that one is pure politics, because I can't imagine riots if they insisted on tests
Not to mention that tests cost
I prefer measures based on science, and not politics
there will always be a compromise, no way around it
then why are blue masks still allowed?
It's not compromise, it's stupidity and gathering politic points for the next election
if you do the "right thing" and follow the opinion of scientists alone, the measures will be highly unpopular and the government will never have a chance to be reelected. We don't care about that last part but they are the ones making the decisions so they very much do
Because they're still better than no masks
no one is wearing no masks before this Mandate
Nope, not true afaik
especially since in our political system, one side can always shit on the governing party's work for free and claim they could have done better
they are still worse than FFP2
and it just screws over poor people who cant afford to buy a new mask every time they go out
not that i agree with all the measures. Had it been for me, surgical masks wouldn't have been allowed
and reusing single use masks can make people fall ill
but i also believe you can only make something mandatory if you can ensure all the population can get it
not to mention all the excess waste it has caused
I cant think of a single other country which has done this mandate and I havent seen proof of it lowering cases
Because it is not just one thing that is responsible for lowering the cases
And afaik, the biggest risk is from friends and family at home
Restaurants with distance and proper ventilation didn't ever jump out as a risk area, but they're keeping them closed for months and definitely killing the business
As a consequence to this, no one will follow the rules next pandemic.
Stores have been closing down around my place.
This just goes back to my belief that the measures taken against the virus have been far worse than the virus itself
Anyhow, I hope it will soon be over with stupid rules
I don't have much hope for the next pandemic either
This isn't the first scary disease, and it doesn't seem we learned a lot from previous ones
Yup, virus 'just' kills some people, measures will ensure collapse of the economy and who knows how many more will 'die of poverty' or suffer for years in bad conditions until they recover
And who will pay for help in meantime?
Germany in next elections is aiming on increasing taxes all around under the flag 'taxing the rich' (no rich person pays proportional taxes anyway), that cannot go indefinitely
They focused too much on political survival and too little on the folks they should represent
I personally prefer quick death by virus, at least you're out of there and don't care anymore 😂
There is also financial incentive and administrative pressure for doctors to attribute Covid to every patient passing under their care which probably inflates the figures.
(In the US at least, they literally earn more if a patient dies from Covid)
Anyways, I just hope it will be over soon.
This pandemic really made me lost my faith in humanity. People act like assholes. Including myself.
that's not a thing outside the us
or at least it's not the norm, and it's not a thing in germany
the pressure can still be a factor
we've had a drop in flu cases not because everyone is wearing masks but because many of them are attributed to corona
How can you be sure that social distancing measures and masks did not contribute to a drop in flu cases? Most resources I've read would contradict that.
By that logic why has corona only persisted and gotten worse if those 2 things are so effective
This doesn't seem like a #archived-culture-study-visa topic.
I don't want to debate about it, just to advise against making unsubstantiated statements because you're frustrated with being cooped up.
Maybe you can take it to #archived-sensitive-topics ?
And if the answer is "not enough people wear masks" then paradoxically enough people are wearing masks to stop flu but not Corona
sure
curfews reduce mobility and reduce R. No idea how you think this is unscientific
Come to #archived-sensitive-topics :)
don't have that channel so shrug 😄
Go to bot channel, write >sub sensitive-topics and you'll have it :)
now why would one want to hurt themself so much
What's the current plan btw?
Go see the Hausartz in June and wait until he calls you back?
I mean, it's not like they will have enough vaccines for everyone.
there is a lot of surplus actually
not everywhere, but if you're lucky you can get your first dose pretty quickly. Call your hausarzt
make sure you mention that you're already their patient, many give priority over people who are only turning up now
Wait, I thought it's only open for everyone in June?
yeah but you can already get a termin
I just checked.
It seems I needed to register on impfzentren.bayern
Said I will be notified by email/sms
I did the registration some time ago. And was assigned to priority group 3.
No vaccine yet.
@exotic barn
Hallo Leute
Kann ich fragen
Ich denke darüber nach, nach Deutschland zu gehen
Sind Sprachkurse in Deutschland geöffnet?
Bei uns in Frankfurt ist geöffnet.
we have them but I don't think they look like that
they're called "Gabeln" here lol
two Kuchengabeln does the job aswell
Maiskolbenhalter
anyone here who has online access to these libraries?
I need a book that they have digitally
Which book is it you seek for?
Get this from a library! Cambridge handbook of intellectual property in Central and Eastern Europe. [Mira T Sundara Rajan;]
Cambridge handbook of intellectual property in Central and Eastern Europe
Started learning German ,not so fluent in it soo carrying along with English.
Hello, myself Tanmay from India, well my question is is three year degree from India eligible for masers program in Germany?? Yes I checked out every University requirment as well as anabin database, everywhere it says student must have a degree with this this marks and pointer. So to my German friends out there and also to foreign students pursuing degree in university, is 3 year bachelor's of science in comp science eligibile??
It depends upon the number of credits you have studied within 3 years. It should be equivalent to 180 ects.
How can I verify credits I have with 180 ects
if you to convert to ects from your local credits. There might be some online tool for that.
uni-assist offers it i think
Thankyou guys!
Hellos
Anyone here knows any info about TU Kaiserslautern Computer Science MAsters ? or the TU or the town ?
I wanted some reviews, since I might attend it this fall
geez it's almost autumn
@median haven was there for first semester. Cute city. Uni is pretty ok. Lots of Americans in town.
It's be ironic to violate copyright laws for a book about intellectual property.
yeah theres a big military base near Kaiserslautern
I mean I am most likely going to get it via my uni library on Monday
just thought of speeding it up for the weekend
I need help finding a flat or an apartment in Germany, but, me currently living in the states have a limited selection of sites I can look at, an anyone give me a hand? Or send me some sites that I may be able to look at?
Unironically, facebook.
There are facebook groups in each city for apartment search.
Be careful of scams.
I'll check, thank you
Do you speak German?
How is the uni ranking-wise in DE/DACH ?
Anyone got info on how accommodation and residence for internationals in München? Is it possible to book something long-term before I travel or do I have to book a hostel/airbnb and start my search there physically?
Are you planning to live alone or with a roommate? I think that can make a difference, because if it's the latter, people generally prefer to meet up with potential roommates beforehand.
but it's also much cheaper because you split the bills and rent
it's risky to book something long-term before coming though, because especially in big places like München there are many scammers
my advice would be to seek a place for short-term, like an airbnb, then use that time to find a more permanent solution once you're here
Yeah, I'm not saying one or the other is preferable. Just that it might be pretty much impossible to get roommates when you can't meet anyone.
some airbnb places will let you prolong your accommodation if you need more time, some even have the option to become long-term. That's actually how i made it
my sister got a spot in the international guest house(dresden) when she booked to go there for a project
Well my issue is that airbnbs and so are naturally more expensive and I don't know how long it would take me to find suitable accommodation.
Currently I'm planning to arrive in Munich 2 weeks before studies begin in order to do that but I don't know if that period is too short or too long
it might be too short
I'm thinking of living alone for the first semester as I don't know what to expect with roommates who I don't know. I want to focus on my studies then and not waste time with quarrels around the house but that of course comes at a cost
The student halls of residence rooms all have waiting periods of 2-5 semesters. I might apply but the earliest I'd get a room is in 1 year
yeah, living alone especially in expensive places like München comes at a premium. You can't have both privacy and cheap accommodation
have you been accepted by the uni yet? Is it an option to pick a less famous city?
I've been accepted already yeah
alright. Personally I'd try to get into the mindset of having to share a place with others at least initially
or to use an airbnb even though it might not come as cheap
But how am I supposed to find suitable roommates before I get to meet anyone?
you don't have to find the other people yourself 👀
Not sure what you're alluding to 🤔
maybe i misunderstood your question
What I mean is that I don't want to book a room in a WG without really knowing the people I'm staying with because it's likely that our lifestyles are incompatible.
In case someone is loud, messy, eats blue cheese, etc.
Afaik most people book a temporary place and then look for roommates once they're there.
But how long should this searching period be?
There's no exact guide. It probably varies by city and time of year and who know how COVID is affecting it as well.
And I'm still not sure how I'd find roommates then because the semester wouldn't have started yet. Or do I stay at the airbnb during my semester? I feel like it's a big risk
You look on the websites that are normally suggested to find roommates.
Are there better options than an airbnb for a temporary place anyway?
It was the cheapest option I found so far
I assume hostel is the cheapest and might be a good starting point.
Idk if this is up to date but: https://www.wg-suche.de/magazin/find-flat-share-munich/
I did find a list of hostels on the the uni's site yesterday. The ones I found on public hotel booking sites were super expensive. Easily twice as expensive as the average airbnb I found. I'll have a look at them for sure
Ahh, I see.
Not fully no
I'm just trying to help my girlfriend look for a new flat, somewhere me and her can live when I get there. She lives there already though, I just want to help, but, I don't get very my sites here in the states though
At the Halls of Residence I see "single room in group of 2/3/4" and "Shared apartment" as different categories. How are those different?
Also this. I've got no clue what's going on
iirc single rooms are those with the WC inside your room, ie. you don‘t share bathrooms with other people, only the kitchen is shared
shared apartments are more wg-like living situations where WC and kitchen is shared
have you looked at stwm.de‘s privat wohnungangebote? there are lots of cheaper offers there than wg-gesucht
don‘t quote me on that though i might be wrong
I just registered to be able to contact those, yeah. I've also found apartment listings on the university's website.
I've sent them an email just to be sure asking about this.
Thank you everyone for your help. This whole ordeal is somewhat stressful at first I'm sure you understand.
nice! the code should come in 2-3 work days :)
good luck! ^^ it gets better as you get used to it all
housing was the biggest hurdle for me but once I got it sorted everything else was a breeze by comparison
most universities in germany are basically at the same level. Only really makes a difference after Msc
I've tried looking on Facebook, but, I can't seem to find any leads, can anyone send me some sites that I can look at while I'm in the states for apartments or flats in germany for me and my girlfriend?
@tender canopy mind if I message you?
Jetzt Wohnungen, Häuser und Gewerbeflächen mieten, kaufen oder inserieren » Das größte Angebot an Immobilien findest du bei ImmoScout24.
just watch out for scams, if they're claiming to be an Airbnb agent or if they're renting the place out while out of the country its a scam
best to go through actual agencies in my experience
I've heard about that and find it very hard to beleive 😕
it's mostly true unless you're looking for a very specific program
in general curricula are very similar and students generally have not a lot of contact with faculty outside of bsc/msc thesis. So i don't find it that surprising
also funding for all the teaching stuff is pretty similar. so no large differences either
Interesting, okay
wait, are you telling me that funding for an institute based in aachen or munich or berlin is same as an institute based in Kaiserslautern ?
I am looking mostly for AI ( KI in german i guess ) TUKL seems okay with it, I am mostly concerned about finding a job
since KL (kaiserslautern) isnt a big city centre even if I graduate with a equivalent msc I am very less confident about getting a job
@bold stump @olive summit any thoughts on this ?
sorry to pull you in @solemn bay , what do you think ? I've always appreciated your thoughts
Hm. For AI the only real standout would be Saarbrücken
well you can always move, Kaiserslautern is pretty large compared to where I live
but the uni near me is focused on agriculture so the rural surroundings fit
Pretty much. Aachen is similar to Kaiserslautern except Aachen is even more famous to only have dudes at the campus
STEM is pretty big there
as an immigrant my focus is more on getting jobs than getting dudes 😦
max planck institute for informatics is in Saarbrücken
locale isn't a big deal really, employers come to the uni and most graduates move anyway
Interesting, Ive heard they are good forPHDs
So from a hiring perspective: Personally I do not distinguish between german universities. It's not a thing.
(except when hiring people with a doctorate. There it becomes more interesting)
okidoke
stem at aachen you mean ?
mh?
yeah
yeah figures
just find a program that you're interested in, its important to be somewhere you like but it should come secondary to your studies + career goals
thanks for the inputs! 🙂 I was looking at zeit.de for rankings
these rankings only make sense for doctorate imho.
and like nyandog said the quality of the education is more or less the same for undergrad
I am talking abot postgrad (MSc) but yeah I guess its the same for that as well
Keep in mind Msc is a very recent thing in germany
Bsc and Msc were pretty much a double deal
ah ok my bad, but yeah there are unis which are more well known but there isnt an "ivy league" or something like in the US which implies exclusivity and superiority
TU9 ? I mean TU9 are supposed to be superior right
Heidelberg, TU München, the schools in Berlin
again it's just legacy and notoriety, not necessarily a higher standard of teaching
lol no
lol okay
interesting
coming a from a country where merit0cracy and institute rankings reign supreme, these are a bit hard to digest
TU Berlin is okay-ish but it would be pretty much one of the lowest ranking for me personally
warum ?
because the buildings are fugly
lmao
(that is true for Kaiserslautern as well though 😄 but there are fewer homeless people that try to sleep next to the offices)
wherever you go its free (except in Baden-Württemberg )
jobwise, southern germany is better and more expensive
yes, thats why I am targetting germany. As you might have noticed from my completely digital avatar I am not one of the rich boiis
Yes agrred. I have no exp about south germany but I kinda felt this statement
yeah, even if TU/LMU Munich is a bit better than TU Berlin, Berlin is way, way more affordable
Interesti9ng
anyways I am going offline for some time, cya all next week prolly
thanks both 🙂
Target a city with a lot of opportunities for part-time/internships.
Basically Berlin. Because München will be too expensive.
Go ahead but I'm not sure if I could be of much help.
Take that back! Das Mathegebäude is art!!
xD
Isn't there supposed to be a new math building soon-ish?
OoOo I haven't heard anything about that, honestly. But it sounds interesting!
we are talking about this abomination, right? 😄
eew
Friends of mine did their phd there and it was a regular problem that homeless people would sleep/crap in front of their offices because the building was open to the public 24/7
They should have made a house for homeless as well
Or atleast the rathouse should have made
i like it
No joke, I actually thought it was being renovated the first time I saw it. Until someone pointed out that was the look they were going for.
I actually think it fits Berlin as a city really well tho
Hm. I mean the poor but sexy thing kinda only works if you put the sexy in as well. But ok.
I'm probably baised, but something about it kind of stands out. Given its a technical uni, it has to also look different from FU oder HU. Have you seen the campus of the Charitè?
yup. I mean I actually like the shoddy rundown look. But I would still prefer to have my office at the FU's campus
(or potsdam 😄 )
I understand that! Berlin has something for everyone
Hi everyone I have read about EU vaccination passport. Is it also applicable for Non EU citizens living in EU? How are non EU vaccinated citizens supposed to travel across borders during this situation ?
nobody knows, it doesn't exist yet
The second question is relevant though. What do you do if you're non-eu and need to get a vaccine?
From what I gather, you can get a new Impfpass at your Hausarzt. But you could also request this paper from your country, if they keep such data, translate it to English or German then show it to your doctor. Besides, it isn't compulsory to get vaccinated in Germany unlike other countries (talking about other vaccines not just covid). Btw all this is stuff a friend told me about how he got his, + a doctor who I asked, who isn't a Hausarzt. So please take this with a grain of salt and correct me where I'm wrong.
personal doctor probably.
i know airlines such as KLM and Delta only require a test still.
Vaccination passport is not something that is just created because of corona.
It existed before.
Although they probably made it more strict/regulated because of corona. Who knows. My Hausartz gave me one when I got vaccinated for something else long ago.
I could be wrong and it’s a different document.
there is a different one planned for corona specifically which should allow free travel across europe for fully vaccinated people
Btw looking at the rate, it seems it won’t be long until this is over.
I remember reading something about it was basically over in Israel after half of their population was vaccinated.
Germany is at 14% for people who have received 2 dosage.
Israel is tiny and has less complex administration, you can't compare the two accurately, the conditions are very different. Also vaccines are voluntary so it's likely that past a certain point it will become much harder to make people get vaccines. If the higher limit we reach is not high enough it won't be over
What % took 1 dose?
40.4. Look at the link
Ah, I didn't see the link. Preview didn't load.
That seems pretty good, I wonder how much it'll be come September
I've already got the first dose here in my home country and would be fully vaccinated by then.
regarding my introduction in #introductions, is this the correct place to ask questions about studying in germany and german cities?
also, German or English?
If you mean studying as in university then yes, and you can use German or English
If you have questions on the German language ask them in #questions
nah, I mean like can you only speak english or deutsch in this channel, I guess english though
You can use either language
aight, ich versuche mal Deutsch
also

Was sind die most affordable Cities in diesen Bundesländern?
die sich nicht im nirgendwo befinden
Es ist schon
if anyone has any advice, just @ me
@mint scarab I believe uni-assist and DAAD will have a lot of information for you, the latter actually processes international student applications for most German universities (if I'm not mistaken you dont have an Abitur)
thanks for the thought, but Ive already gone through both
probably going to apply with uni assist online, because sending my documents per post sounds expensive and slow
you should be able to check whether you qualify via uni assist
they seem to prefer electronic copies anyway, I only had to send my diploma via post
also they do have a phone number I bet calling might help
I think I fullfill all the requirments, but my problem is that Im unsure which city in Germany I should in
Dortmund in nrw is pretty affordable
But i don't have much experience with other places
@mint scarab it depends on what you what to study and what kind of city you would like to live in
Em, im not sure what I want to study exactly, I was just thinking about picking a non-NC Studiumgang that im interested in and if it turns out that Im not too fond of it, just change to another Studiumgang, which by then Ill be more sure what I want to do
The university either asks you to apply through uni-assist or not, you don't get to choose. Also for some unis uni-assist requests physical certified copies by post
Id like to live in a medium sized city, somewhat like Ludwigshafen/Mannheim, that is affordable for a 2nd world country person like me. Thinking about Aachen atm
Im aware of that, dont know why I phrased it like I had a choice, weird
Aachen is a great student city!!!
ye, Ive heard so, and its affordable, but the courses are all science related, which Im not very interested in
Bigger cities have more opportunities.
True, good point, but how many of thosw big cities are affordable?
I guess living on the outskirts of one is always an option, but then you could expect 1+ hours of transports every day
How large does your target city need to be and do you have a general direction what you wanna study?
There are some lovely medium-ish cities like Aachen, Marburg, Weimar that are reasonably cheap to live in
For larger cities Leipzig and Berlin are still pretty affordable
Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Heidelberg = hilariously expensive
Id say 150k - 300k is a good number. I want to study preferably on the West because of different reasons, so Ill probably rule out Berlin already
Thanks a lot for the advice
I was thinking about Frankfurt because of a aqcuiantance, but it does sound way too expensive, so Ill probably rule it out too
And all the other expensive cities
Have a look at Darmstadt. It's 15 minutes by train south of Frankfurt. Has more of a university town flair. Also a bit more affordable
Since we're on topic, is Freiburg im Breisgau expensive?
Frankfurt isn't even payable
frankfurt is expensive and ugly... xD it does not have anything 😄
the highest crime rate in Germany afaik
great place
750k people made their worst decision in life: living in Frankfurt
yes, please move to Berlin and leave us alone in Frankfurt 😉
munich is expensive as fuck but at least its nice
For larger cities it's also a lot of personal taste. E.g. I love Frankfurt but find Berlin ugly and dirty and while I can appreciate Munich, I wouldn't like to move there
dont go to Stankfurt
theres been a similar discussion here before, just pick somewhere that you find appealing, cost of living isnt too high, etc. Living in a large city isnt really necessary since many companies recruit on campus and most graduates move after finishing their degree.
This consideration is important but should come second after your program choice imo
Cost of living here is generally affordable and most places are quite safe so there arent many places you could go wrong.
I really don’t like bahnhofs of Frankfurt. Too much ugly and dirty
where do you come from ?
Yeah got it
Live nearby big cities
you could commute easily to work
Don’t live in city but live somewhere nearby
Berlin.
Leipzig, Dresden, even Hamburg if you look hard enough
How's Aachen living situation?
I will be arriving this Oct for wise at RWTH aachen
Any pointers would be great help 😁
Aix-la-Chapelle*
a-de-NARK
Tell pls
Aden 😠
Nate 😍
Aquisgrán
anyone here studied in Trier?
Is rent in Leipzig expensive?
And how easy is it to find a place
If anyone has first-hand experience from recent years
Hi , anybody here studying in fulda?
I will get vaccinated by my uni, I guess if you're a german resident you also can just go to an Impfzentrum.
its quite easy, i lived in 3 apartments so far: 1) wg, 260 euro, innenstadt, close to uni 2) dorm wg, 250 euro, innenstadt, extremely close to uni 3) wg, slightly outside of the inner circle, 390 euro (the apartment is huge and we have a 50qm roof terrace)
if you got any questions you can dm me
ive been living here for almost 3 years
aachen is a pretty busy place
largest german city bordering the netherlands
2 separate unis so a lot of students
with that many students, it probably doesnt have many job opportunities, something to keep in mind
Thanks for the info @odd bison !
I'll surely dm in the near future, currently I'm celebrating my admit for the master's program but I will definitely need your insight 😀
Do youmeam student job opportunities or job opportunities after graduation?
the former
Ahcool
I don't think thats the case, you could say theres more competition I suppose but with so many students there are lots of local companies specifically recruiting students for Minijobs.
How much do students generally spend per week or per month in aachen ?
Maybe excluding rent
For food and staying physically and mentally alive
On a Student visa you can only work part-time which usually yields ~450 euros a month if its minimum wage
For thesis or just.. you know flipping döners
Yes i agree
more like flipping döners i think
Well I had a job at a research institute on campus and it was minimum wage lol
What the min
I'm sure it varies by department but you won't get much until after graduation
10 euro per hour ?
10 or 10.50
Oof okay
Flipping potatos then
in any case you're supposed to already have financing secured in order to get your visa in the first place
but 450 a month helped with smaller stuff like food
Yes, 10.3K euros
If you're smart with your money you can get by on very little to be honest
Yes definitely, how do people mamage to work and study so hard at the same time
Rarely shop, only go to discount supermarkets, get a room in a shared WG which is only 250-300 euros a month
From what I've heard german degree studies break your back
How much is a room for a single person? Any idea ?
Well it depends on the degree, I've heard the opposite from folks in the Business program lol
but im sure for stuff like Engineering it is more strenuous
isnt business known for that though lol
yeah, most Business programs aren't very academic, its just preparing you for office careers
which isn't bad, just how they're often set up
ye, its more logical though
I see, I thought business programs would be like MBA etc
well I'm talking about undergrad
Things like Biology, Engineering, ect, will break your back
because there is infinite material
Yes
I'm in Informatics, it's the same deal here
Sometimes a stackoverflow comment explains things things better than whole Tannenbaums (t.baum is an author)
the more specific the degree, the more you can focus on what you actually need
In any case a Minijob is meant to supplement your income, your studies is already considered a "full time job" hence why you can only work part time but even then its discouraged
not speaking out of experience, just observation and second hand knowledge
How much Euros do you believe that "very little" could possibly be?
Understood
when I lived in a WG i probably spent less than 500 euros a month, including insurance, food, rent, etc.
but I wasn't eating very well lmao
mostly because I couldn't cook well at the time
Elaborate, did stop eating or what
😂
Why didn't you go to Mensa or canteen ?
no just exclusively shopped at Penny (discount supermarket) only got very simple ingredients
my Mensa was kinda expensive, this was during the summer anyway
How much do Mensas cost ? Is it like a subscription service
at my uni you loaded money onto a card, a full meal with a drink would typically cost 4-6 euros
really only went to hang out with friends, since you can replicate the dishes in larger portions for cheaper at home
how difficult is it to apply for BAföG? is it still possible this year?
I was really close to campus so it wasn't a big deal heading home for lunch or whatever
Ahhh, prolly because of that
Foreigners cant get BAföG
Got it, I would like to try my hand at cooking bht i don't wanna set the whole house on fire while it smells Canned tuna
unless one of your parents, spouse, etc. is employed or self-employed in germany
I can cook but not the german dishes with the german local ingredients
What about the friends you made ?
Is it hard to make friends because we are auslanders?
Wow... that's bold. I think I'll do something similar. Thanks for the answer.
Weight loss 101 I guess :p
@rotund trelliskeep in mind im very frugal in general lol, i never go out to eat and rarely shop
Same.
@median havenI don't think so, most German students are very interested in foreign students, although they can be hard to approach at first
interacting with your roommates and joining a club at the uni is a good place to start
Cool
Thanks for this tip, I gotta see whatclub my unskilled ass can join
there was a lot of club sport organizations, not playing in leagues or a professional setting--just for fun, lot of people seemed to like those
and typically theres an academic club for each department
I think I'm probably going to spend every weekend ina different city in Netherlands or Belgium or france 😌
Hopefully I can afford some kinda jugend wg or airbnb for a night
There are trains from Aachen to there right ?
haha everyone coming to aachen thinks they will travel a lot
but university spits on your plans
only buses to NL
yes either through a Fahrschule or converting your foreign one
Do you know anything about converting the foreign one?
Your local Bürgerbüro or Verkehrsamt will actually handle converting it, I'm sure the information of whether you're eligible or not is online
I really only know which American licenses are eligible
Cool cool cool cool cool cool
You'll need an official translation of the license though, ADAC does them.
I see, thanks!
Hm, but were you still able to prove financial security when you renewed your visa? Don't they require proof that you are receiving the 10.300 Euros per year, regardless of what you're actually spending?
Yes, you have access to that money obviously.
My uncle was able to sign a deceleration of financial support since he lives in Munich, so I personally did not need the blocked bank account.
but otherwise yes you must prove that to your local ABH
Oh, I was talking about renewing the visa after having spent a whole year in Germany, since the original Sperrkonto would have been used up by then, but I think that's not the case.
I assume you need to replenish it every year and show them.
i wish my dads uncle did that for me
well they have to be based in Germany and must show their income to the ABH, but otherwise it is a far easier procedure
I have a question but I don't know if I should ask it because I think it violates rule number 2
Anyone has info on international bank wire transfer rates to Germany?
I want to know the range of how much I should expect to pay in fees for the transfer of ~10332 for the blocked account.
35 euros are usually the maximum banks take when I asked
Besides the extra money goes into your blocked account, so even if you send 35 and it ends up being only 10, the rest gets credited to your account.
i used transferwise for sending money till i got a german account set up, would that be an option? i remember their fees being fairly low
is it a must to withdrawal money from the block account for spending? can we withdraw money from other accounts ?
Are there water refill stations on an ice train in germany
just use the sink in the restroom
Yes, the water is drinkable. The tap however...
I may not be completely right. But basically they unlock a certain amount of money every month. So no need to withdraw anything.
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I'm going to Germany next month for about two weeks. The places I'm most interested in, are Cologne and Munich. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction in regards to what I should do or see in these places or around them?
@exotic barn 👍 💯
I'll have a look at it, thanks.
Hi I got a question. Can we drop our documents to be sent on any governmental services on the post container or box available in street’s? It’s to ard zdf
i am new to this as I come from country where postbox aren’t really used
Yes.
No need to attach a stamp too. At least that's what I did.
With the included envelope.
If you are afraid, you can visit a post office of course and ask for more info. Or use google translate/deepl to read the Deutsche Post website.
yes an envelope is included
guys for any international student here who has applied from uni assit for the winter semester 21 , have they sent your documents or is it still in evaluation statues ?
Depends on the university itself I think. But I sent to two universities, one online and one physical* and both were sent
had a bad experience with uni-assist but it's the only way to apply
to sent physical documents first uni assit has to send online documents to the respective universities.. since we are international students uni assit is the only way unless it's a sloley private uni you have applied to..?
for the university to get back to you, uni assit has to send the documents right ? is your documents also still in evaluation?? when did you apply ?
when did you apply ? this may? for which uni?
For some universities, uni-assist requests physical copies to give you a VPD
For other unis it's entirely online
TUM and TUB. Early May
ya that's only for some universities, all the unis I have applied require only online documents not vpd
ah they are probably hard to get in unis right..
but uni assit has sent your documents right ? so not much of a issue then , only the university has to confirm.. but for most of us uni assit still haven't send our documents,
Yeah they sent the documents
I'd say just double-check that you uploaded all the documents the uni requires
guys uni assit keeps your documents up to 3 years right ? if you have uploaded documents, you dont have to re upload them right within a certain period of time ?
I don't know, sorry.
Idk what you guys applied for but TUB sucks in getting back to you about your application haha
I never got my rejection for the first round of admissions, luckily I got admitted in the last round but yeah
It was a mess when I was enrolling for summer 2020
I was applying for a bachelor in Maschinenbau, which is NC. Hope that provides at least some context.
glad u got enrolled..
I almost didn't, I got accepted into my course through a Losverfahren
thankyou very much for this information.. you also applied for winter semester 21?? if so what university?
mmm what's that ? 🧐
Basically casting lots, I sent an application to take part in that. They put all applicants in a big bowl and they pick however many are enough to fill the remaining number of seats
damn , lucky you.. does all the university's has this option ?
why is everyone applying yo TUB anyway then I ain't the only one left with still evaluation statues on uni assit
yes I know therefore at the same time it's hard to get enrolled to such universities right ??
better if its NC frei right?
uni-assist didn't forward my documents to the university until October when i applied last year, then blamed it all on corona
wait what ??? what happend? didn't you get to enroll?
I eventually got a result it just took a while, but I had to contact the actual uni to put pressure on them...
apparently there was also a fire in their building and they weren't taking calls, email was the only way to communicate with them
I imagine its better now, but the whole process took needlessly long
when was this? 2020?
yeah last year, for the winter semester
which began early November btw
so definitely cutting it close
yah .. usually for winter semester they give a result in July right ?? did you go to the country on time ?
Oh I was already in Germany so luckily that wasn't an issue, but I cant help but think they purposely kicked my application to the back when they realized i already lived in the same city as my uni...
since I wouldn't need the "extra notice" to begin the visa processing, looking for a place, etc.
in any case its over now, the uni itself admitted they've had communication problems with uni-assist but its the only way for foreigners to apply
