hello
hi
hello
Klar wie kloßbrühe
Hey!
Hi
It's morning in Germany/Europe, so it's not that crowded right now!
Where do you come from? @hot cloak
Hi @hot cloak, the bot muted you for reposting the same message across multiple channels. There's no need to do that. #general or #general-2 are perfectly fine if you want to talk to people.
I am from India
Oh cool! So what time is it there?
Hi
Welcome!
In Germany?
Yup
11:08 AM
So, you wanna learn German? @naive sapphire
I also learn German
Yes i am learning in my school a little
Same here
oo great
I'm 17 and you?
15
13
Great
Do you also learn German language
??
I am a native speaker, as the yellow name indicates
And where are you from?
@naive sapphire
Oh ok sorry
India
And u? 🙃
Can you help me in German language???...if you don't mind
Who?
It's fine
@strong stratus
Germany :)
Then ofc ur a good speaker of german
Of course that’s why I'm here!
Ok fine
I hope so
🤣😂
So Can you tell me something about your Germany?? Like culture..or anything new
Like how you celebrate Halloween??
Do they?
I don't know...I am just asking
By and large in Germany, Halloween is a holiday celebrated by adults at themed costume parties and clubs. Pumpkin Festivals are also a popular way to celebrate both the arrival of Fall and Halloween with the whole famil
Hahaha
We are!
It’s also really popular here to carve a pumpkin and put it outside of your house-
I guess why do even need to celebrate Halloween?
I know...that we can get to know it on Google...but its better to talk with people and get to know
Ik
Really great
And most likely, kids come together in groups, dress themselves and go from house to house together! They say "Süßes oder Saueres" instead of "Trick or treat"
Is that the German form of trick or treat?
Yes!
"Süßes" is a shortened form of "Süßigkeiten" (= "sweets") and with "Saueres" we mean that they'll get a prank or something in receive of not handing out candy!
I guess it's most of normal like US
It is!
Oooo
It's just a saying- most people, who open the door, hand out candy :)
But the most typical is, throwing eggs at ones house
😂
It's all new for me as I haven't experienced or haven't heard about it earlier
Oh....what was it??
Oh, well done!
Food of germany
It was hard
As I don't know much
They said to make simple sentences
But
All were hard
Lol
Yes you are right....I have also just completed the project
Ooo
Great
Was that of sinking 🤣
Sikkim
Everyone just gives sikkim
😂😂
Sorry, I don't get it..
No
All give sikkim 😂
With saying of project...I mean I have made portfolio
So, what did you wrote about German food?
Yes you are right....my earlier project was something like that
Umm
I’m often unsure myself, which food is typical for Germany
Lol
You just have to collect activities and others you have done in your class
I don't get it
💁♂️
Have to decorate it...make a file... Other things like that
No it's not
And interesting
Oo
It sometimes takes a lot of time
I have to done it alone
Oothats sad🙁
When there is something to do in group instead of having fun and complete the project... My groups just don't complete it...and made all burden to me
U don't take it then
U say u do it why me
Seriously very angry about that
Oh that’s awful!
Yea I just complete my work...tell mam about them...and mam deduct their marks😂
🤣🤣🤣
True
But there are always lazy people, who literally get sneaky through everything
Yep
Hey...please tell others things about Germany please...
I want to know more about there
Ummm
Do u want to become a German Master?
Teacher?
Sorry need to go
Bye
🙋🙋♀️
Bye
Bye!
Uhm, what do you wanna know?
How we celebrate things or something different?
Something different
And what? @hot cloak
Like I have heard that sometimes you all use in speaking du, dir for oma und opa
I write emails and dialogues of book questions in German ....I only know little bit... I hope you don't mind and will help me to know more about germany
Hey....are you there??
Hey??
you mean how you start a letter, or some conversation starters?
I'm confused too
Yea something like that
well i know letters
Sorry for confusing
with liebe/lieber and then a name..
Where are you from??
Hallo, Hey, Hi (standard)
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren (formal)
Liebe/r (letter)
uhh im from romania. wbu
romania? yehh i knoww
Ok
and like at the end of the letter would it be mit grussen?
"Mit freundlichen Grüßen
-your name"
Correct ^^
Jetzt sehe ich dich aber auch überall @pseudo lava
Tja
😂
What?? ...
@strong stratus hey....can you tell more about Germany people like the way they talk or any other thing???
The best way for that is speaking-
do you mean something specific for german people?
It's hard to explain how you exactly speak
i am not german but im trying to understand the question lol
Because there are sooo many things!
well german peeple have a specific accent
right?
When speaking German?
at all time i think
Can you tell some??
its just the way they speak..right?
like many countries have accent, and so does germany
Maybe you could join a vc at some time and then ask specific questions @hot cloak
I guess that applies to almost every language
hmmm yeah i guess
You get that type of speaking if you listen to natives/fluent speakers
maybe they mean like traditions in germany..
Actually, I want to know the things happened there in different situations
yeah its like..different when you speak to a native
like if they handle a situasion differnently?
Like recently I have to write a dialogue....conversation between doctor and patient having high fever
Can anyone help me in this dialogue
??
With accents, it’s really interesting! I attend the English advanced course in school and there are so many kinds of accents!
Some really sound german
While others also sound British/American
really? well thats means that there are people from all around the world right?
really?..huh
Can anyone tell me lines I can add in conversation in my dialogue??
why do you think they have different acccents?
in german right?
Yes
Some people can drop of this german-type of speaking and some not
really?..i learn some things today
We can not do your whole homework, but if you have questions, just ask them
Yeah sure! Not all Germans really sound German when speaking English

well is the doctor at the pacients home or at the hospital?
It's not my whole homework
but when they speak german do they sound like german lol?
At the hospital
Yeah ofc
well maybe then you can also introduce a nurse..or like a sudden event like the doctor needs to go at a emegency
I was talking about German speaking English in my advanced course
ohh yeah right sorry
Is the patient an adult or a child?
when i spoke to someone from sweden, we also spoke in english and in german and they told me that my accent is closer to american accent than british accent.
Doesn't matter
I think that, if you aren’t native, your accent will most likely be American
and i find that rly interesting since almost every youtuber or song i listen to is from someone that has american accent
hmmm i think it does tho
bc the doctor speaks diferently to a child
than an adult
Ok....just leave it
And that’s the reason! Almost everything (English) in our environment is American English-
exactly
so what you listen to really afects your accent..and since what you said is true, thena lot of ppl have american accent
What's the time there??
here? its like 2 pm
Oh...here it is 5: 50 PM
Yeah! But not everyone adopts this accent so well-
oh so youre from europe too
hmm i guess
I am from India
So I'd say German natives have it tough, because our pronunciation is so different from English
oh..i guess i dont know the time zones that well..
really cool..
No problem
I have the feeling that we pronounce very harsh
From Asia
for example, i once talked to these guys from americs and they guessed that i am from spain lol
wdym harsh?
So many of my fellow students have problems with pronouncing "th" like in "the" or "there"
ohhh
i get it
i sometimes have this thing, where if i write in english and i write a word that has sh in, i write it sch from german lol
i guess thats the way im used to, since i wrote more in german than in english
I am opposite...I have less problem in English than german
well yeah but the thing is i learn and speak german for over 8 years
Oh that's a long time
Oh
so i rly need to start talking, writing and reading in german more than i do now
How old are you??
it rly is lol. cant figure out how its been sooooo long
I've noticed that too when Germans pronounce something with 'th' in it. E.g. I was watching a Skyrim stream and there's a charachter called 'Boethiah' - it was pronounced 'Boetia'
well i learn german a bit from before school, but that doesnt count in those 8 years
Same
im in school
well speaking, im certain i am more fluent in english tho
but writing...ehhhh i still have some problems i guess
Sometimes I don't feel like I'm native German at all, because I know words in English, which I don’t know in German
i still have time to improve tho..
Ok bye
do you have any exapmles? I wanna literally translate them into awkward-sounding German versions because it's fun
omg same. i know words in english but not in my native language
its soooo frustrating sometimes
especially when i have to write essays
byee
That’s less weird from what I've heard, but also typical German, trying to pronounce English words
I have heard from fellow student things like, for example "something" as [some-szing] or "the" as [sä]
idk sometimes its kind of funny to hear a native speaking german
idk why lol
it just sounds funny to me sometimes
Those words are most likely random words that I suddenly don’t remember and then my sentences just sound like the result of putting German and English in a mixer
I understand-
Denglisch
When speaking Englisch for a while and then returning to German, I also get a weird feeling, because I actually ||dont't like the German pronunciation||
Dicker, die deutsche Aussprache ist geil, wie kannst du sowas sagen? 😮
wenn ich ein Wort wie einsatzbereit höre, denk ich mir geil Alter
Do be like that, honestly
English pronunciation is okay, not my favorite, but not bad
I don't like how Spanish sounds tho

UNAI FROM DEEP
Hallo alle
Hallo. Wie gehts es ihnen?
Mir gehts gut.
Es is without a t at the end
Ah. Das Englisch tastatur ist schwierig zu tippe ein.
I nit pick some words I don't know in my book and learn as I go. I use some language learning apps but I want to use that in situations so it sticks better
Seit wann lernst du Deutsch?
Ich habe mit neunundzwanzig angefangen.
I started to learn to count to 100 and often I need to look at my notes for the 2 thounsands.
2019 I started to learn but it wasn't consistant when my teacher left to go back into Germany. So I got stuck with Duolingo and books along with some other stuff.
Learning another language in America or finding someone to teach you is like pulling teeth.
schwierig einzutippen (so geht mit || separable verbs || )
zB um reinzukommen, öffne die Tur
That's right but don't give up. German is pretty hard but it's also a nice language and you are already pretty understandable at least
Ach so..
Komisch ja
Yeah. My speaking died and I had a small accent going but I resorted to online and with my work schedule hard to practice speaking.
Du schaffst das aber, ist einfach
Hardest to learn probably is German sentence structure and grammar because it's unnessearily complicated
Danke.
English also too. Theres alot of grammar rules that can be confusing to foreigners
It is. Like stuff confuses me like
"Why doesn't the boy run?"
"Warum rennt der Junge nicht?"
How I use to write it
"Warum nicht der Junge rennt?"
English doesn't follow it's own rules sometimes though.
Yeah english never follows its own rules
I understand but that's easy to learn. Remember that the verb always is second on the order. That doesn't always mean it's the second word but it stands after one sentence part that can't be separated
Actually, germans break their own sentence rules all the time
Ehhh... Ich mag es Persönlich. Allows?.. mich zu habe freunde.
I like learning in person because it allows me to make a bond with that person vs having internet friends. It's a different bond if that makes sense. Here in my area education doesn't teach us another language very uncommon for High school or college to teach us a foregen language. Only way we can is the internet or have someone come from another country to teach us or use the internet
technisch gesehen wäre es “Ich bin in letzter Zeit mit Freunden ins Kino gegangen” aber du würdest so anders sehen, was aus die Person an kommt. Also es ist auch irgendwie in Ordnung stattdessen “ich bin mit Freunden ins Kino in letzter Zeit gegangen” zu sagen
Sie kümmern sich nicht wirklich darüber lol
Auf Deutsch, Deutschlernen gefällt mir / Ich mag Deutsch lernen / Ich lerne sehr gerne Deutsch
… , da ich dabei neue Freunde treffen kann
Mhm.. Ich mag haben neue Freunde.
Mag is a form of mögen
So mögen is a bully verb. Pushes all other verbs to the end
Therefore, du magst neue Freunde haben (wenn das Sinn ergibt)
All the verbs that are modal (“bully”) verbs are mögen, können, werden, würden, dürfen, sollen, and müssen
There are other forms of them that you’ll learn soon too, such as combining them together and using future / past tense with them
It's like a helping verb. It still is at the second order and pushes the actual verb to the last position.
Okay so their only a handful of bully berbs
Yeah, they’re all the cases where you’d use two verbs traditionally
Such as in english: I can do it
I want to have it
Yes. Most common probably is "haben" in the Perfekt tense.
Ich esse ein Brot. (verb at second place)
Ich habe ein Brot gegessen. (bully verb at second place, form of "essen" at last place.
Guess I can attend to the reading lessons here if I can get a chance or speak with people trying to get back into speaking it again cause I'm gonna be rusy speaking it.
Lol
Oh sorry, my bad. Still the same procedure at least. They are all verbs which kind of support the main verb and push the main verb to the last position :)
Ur fine
The cool thing is that this law sticks for every case with more verbs
So you can push a modal verb to the end of a new one takes precedence
Okay i need to sleep now. Have 6 hours of English exam coming up tomorrow. Good night
Gn Vinn
gute Nacht 🙂
I wish we had a school I can attend to, to learn all this.
rip
So could you translate the sentence: I meet a friend (meet : treffen, der Freund : will go to den Freund as the subject)
I’ll show you the power of modal verbs
Aight
Wouldn't it be like from what you showing me
Ich den Freund treffen. Education Guess
Just looking for the one verb case here 🙂
No pushing verbs around until there’s two or more
So verb goes second (conjugated if you know, but treffen is irregular lol rip)
Oh
Good info
So much to know
Try the sentence again?
Ich treffen den Freund.
treffe* because verbs (for the most part) always cut off the n for ich
oh
hello
So for most verbs you follow the ESTTENTEN
zB
ich spielE
du spielST
er/sie/es spielT
wir spielEN
ihr spielT
sie/Sie spielEN
What does ESRRENTEN stand for?
Lag :/
This
die endungen
Standard order of conjugation
e/st/t/en/t/en in the order ich, du, er/sie/es etc. Verb endings
For modal verbs, er/sie/es takes ich form, but that’s not too important rn
and other cases of course exist but you can assume this conjugation for most verbs
P much, german is regular enough for learning that
And if you hear the irregular ones enough, you can maybe work it out
I can’t even list the irregular ones, you eventually just know them over time
Well enough reading and speaking it eventually just clicks without an issue
Exactly
Well there’s ich esse, du isst, usw (catches a lot of people off guard essen does)
Tbf I guess you don't use that verb as much as others
My way of learning is passive learning like. I first started off listening to music, News, and other small things to train my ear to hear it. And soon met someone to help me to learn and use duolingo and soon got some books to passive read to understand the sentence structure. Might finish the book but I learn more words and how some stuff suppose to be written
Als Alpaka verwende ich lieber “frissen” haha
I recommend learning sections of vocabulary and verbs relevant to a topic
Idk, passive is only effective.. Er at higher levels so I wouldn't depend on it for a while. Still good to have media and immersion though
I collect words passively via instagram, which I’ll be learning soon over Christmas
I am. I'm currently doing war books that takes place in WW1 and 2
I'm focusing on grammar rn and I recognise enough vocab to read so I'm just doing what words busuu gives me and leaving it at that
But you do learn some things and they randomly click. Like how I just learnt ehe and bevor force the Plasumquaperfect (spelt that wrong) tense
hi
You be shocked how my passive works. I just listen and I can steal your words out of your language and know how to use it due to me using education guess. I do that a lot to the spanish speakers to get into their sentences or speak to them.
Oh yeah, I'm not saying it's bad, just that it's better at higher levels
You have more context and knowledge to guess so yeah
Idk all the english words making me have to look them up
You can get by with an extremely small vocabulary so long as you learn things like dative, accusative, verb form, sentence structure, and prepositions
The amount of times I've seen bedeutet or urlaub and worked out what it meant
Yep. Grammar is a lot more important
means and holiday haha
Yep, I've seen them so often
es bedeutet (it means: from bedeuten)
Like if you don't know german grammar basics you can't say p much anything
I need more practice on structer my sentence, grammar and a lot of stuff
but really only for words, as meinen is used for things like (ich meinte es nicht: i didn’t mean it)
Maybe 2 more years lf hard practice I can get it but my butt came back from being lazy for 3 months
I can't really recommend one good grammar thing bc some are good at x, bad at y etc.
The first big stepping stone is probably the use of weil and those other coordinating things
Just do what you can, even if it's 5 minutes of active learning daily or every other day. Make it a schedule you can manage
Weil etc is easy enough, you just tell the 1st verb to go away (to the end of the sentence)
I’d try and speed run to learning those subordinating conjunctions
I'm planning om doing is when I'm doing computer work turn my radio on and listen to the news or watch a movie in the background.
Yeah definitely
Caramel, finish this sentence: Weil ich Deutsch lerne, ……
Send me a link or picture of it in my DMs so I can work on it in my free time
Mit was?
anything
Uhh Weil ich Deutsch lerne, ich esse Abendessen spät? I'm not exactly great at making sentences yet
Not sure where late goes rlly
aha got ya 🙂 One more rule for weil and such. Verbs always go to the end, and, if possible, Verbs always touch in the middle
Even in a new clause?
So Weil ich Deutsch lerne, esse ich Abendessen spät
It’s because the entire first clause takes as a time article
I can give an example
Hmm...
Weil icb Deutsch lerne, so ich spreche zu die Enten
had to look up Weil. Had to do it as it seemed funny to do.
Ich spreche Deutsch, weil das cool ist, obwohl das nicht so typisch ist, würden Leute sagen
Well.. "Because" if I found the right translation. It's important to know
That's right
Everything before the last comma is a time clause
Hmm okay. So all preceeding ones push it to the front
Wait no
Okay the example has now gotten me 😂
haha
Lol
Ungebräuchlich so viele in einem Satz zu sehen
Was?
Definitely yeah
German likes long words
I just deepl if I don't understand, I have it as a bookmark for speed reasons
Tbf I guess it's only the first word for me
With the time clause thing: I could say
‘jetzt’ mache ich etwas.
Or instead of jetzt, I could say
‘weil/da ich eine Person bin’ mache ich etwas
.
That’s why the verbs touch
Because you’re just substituting jetzt for another thing, albeit a much longer thing
Yeah, sorta makes sense
Genau Jetzt = Right now
Genau hier = Right here
Jetz oder nie = Now or Never?
Jetzt
Genau Jetzt I have never heard
Some dude from Berlin song a song about it
Sofort : immediately, Nun : right now
I guess it makes sense, but you also have gerade
Which I think translates okayish to currently
“genau jetzt” would be something like “just now”
I thought it be Right now
zB “genau jetzt merke ich wie schön du wirklich bist”
Mmm
Genau doesn’t always work the same in german as in english
usually it means exactly
Yeah I know that part.
I haven't even started with genau, same as doch, confusing in usage to me and I have more important things to learn now xD
Honestly doch is worse
doch is big momma of confusion
Genau is simple. But with a words after it changes it's whole meaning
Yup
Actually you’ll probably see schon is quite a confusing word
I mean.. It is a bit but it's used in more specific ways you can learn I think compared to doch
.. Or comfort?
Otherwise for emphasis
Okay that's not so bad yeah
Yeah, like “Ich hasse mein Leben” … doch!
lol
It can also affirm a statement, but really don’t try that unless you’re a native speaker
Just proclaim it whenever you’re complete against what someone says
Okay cya, thanks for explaining stuff to us
Tried Japanese once. Chose German instead. 😂
Japanese is not a bad language. But the issue is, it isn't well spoken in the western side compare to German and Spanish maybe a dable of French
True. My high school actually had a Japanese class though. We didn't have a German class which was unfortunate.
Schools in the south part of America is a joke when coming to learn a language. We don't have schools that teaches us languages. We have yo go out of our way to learn
schools here barely even teach anything, we only have spanish
Your lucky to learn spanish
We don't even have that even though our area is filled with them
We have French, Spanish, German and Mandarin but the mandarin class is literally a cult
I learn more from the internet than school
i live near the mexico-texas border so it’s almost a requirement for them to teach it
Lucky
Literally everyone 😂
We have spanish around every corner
Our head boyo said "Give them english class they be fine."
History infographics are so much better than most history lessons at school
yeah
Don't get me started on the history of the world simplified video
In Canada (or at least Edmonton), we had to learn French as a second language from grade 4 to grade 6. Then in junior high, you can learn other languages. I chose to continue my French though
Or just take French amersion
Idk how to spell that
Our school has a mandarin class that you can join before you even join the school when you are 10 years old with the promise of a trip to china. They make you sign a bit of paper and as soon as you signed it your stuck in that class until you’re 16. Worse bit is the china trip never happened cause covid but they make the mandarin class stay for an extra period of school twice a week.
Yikes
That sounds hectic
Me personally I just stick to learning ine language at a time. Prefer to master german so I don't have anyone that can understand me in my area. Besides the germans that's living here
Yea that's a smart idea
They don't offer a German language option at my school though, and I want to continue learning my French
I'll be moving back to my English-speaking city soon though (from Quebec)
In like two weeks or something idk exactly how long
Next day off from work I would like to train more into talking
its better .. to learn from books ,. rather than learning from sites
You could take a look at #resources maybe you'll find something there!
i personally ... got suffered a bit .. like some times ,... these sites teach wrong things
so would advice you to learn from a book
@red flume I agree with you
Hey guys is there someone who can review an essay for me?
Sure
Not sure where to post this! I think it is most appropriate here?
Has anyone tried learning a second language as an adult? If so, was it challenging was it to become fluent? I've been doing at least 30 minutes to an hour a day of German Duolingo to bring back what I learned (4 courses worth) of German about~7 years ago now. It is going ok and I think the repetition is helping things sink in more. I've heard specifically German grammar is super hard at advanced levels, and I see people talk about the higher levels on Reddit and I am starting to think I may not reach my goal of becoming very fluent for a loooong time. That's fine, I'm just wondering if I should up my efforts to speed it up, or just chill for now. I'm under no pressure, I just enjoy chasing a goal and am happy to commit more time if it is worth it.
Also, anyone have success with a VPN to watch Netflix from another country? That's my next goal to figure out. I already have some German books set up aimed at beginners wanting to start reading in German. I am after getting the B1/2 textbooks next year. I believe I was at A2 level previously, but I would like to reassess.
I currently use Quizlet (Anki set up didn't work for me the other day on my PC?) and have some books on the way, and am thinking about a German teacher in the future. I also am wondering if any Canadians know of how to test for levels, and also where to get the textbooks for levels. I was a bit confused from my Google search, I was a bit tired as well. 😬
To whoever reads this, thank you!
Has anyone tried learning a second language as an adult? If so, was it challenging was it to become fluent?
The majority of people here are doing that. Most people have great success (as long as they stick to it long enough).
I figured, just being from Canada there's zero exposure growing up compared to all my immigrant friends who learned German, so I they felt English was easier than likely it is for me to start learning it as an adult starting from nothing.
Just wondering people's timelines on getting through the levels mostly.
It's not as challenging imo with the right resources and self discipline. Never done that w a vpn, there are good German shows on eng netflix already imo (uk netflix). Can't rrly comment on my own timeline bc it's short rn
Thanks for the response! I didn't see any German shows on Canadian Netflix but I might take another look. I definitely have discipline, and I am working at getting good resources. I tend to be a self learned so I will definitely have to explore getting the right resources to practice.
Ah okay cool, I personally recommend the shows "How to sell drugs (fast)" bc it's good entertainment and "Lolle on the run" bc it's great to understand at A level (if you can find them on Canadian netflix). Biohackers is good, but definitely has specialised and non A level vocab
Ah! It looks like I can adjust it to German original, but no German subtitles to follow along for How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast), but I see subtitles are in German for Dark and none for Lolle On the Run but I will definitely try watching what I can! I really appreciate the suggestions, thank you!
haha, im lucky as a midwestern to have german in schools
Wait really? That's rlly weird ngl, I watched both w german subs. Lolle on the run barely needs subs because it's that easy to understand honestly
Yah I'm very confused...
Very over the top and lil cringe, easy to guess from context if you're still unsure
Perfect haha
Gl though!
Thank you a lot!!
We have to much dialects in our area. That's why a lot of language schools doesn't do well here cause we have many ways to say something lile for instance
Cha = you
Ya = you
No worries, I enjoy recommending shows I like 😂
I may ask again later!
hallo
yo
Cool
Also es ist hier aber ein großes Stereotyp, das Norwegen ein ganz erstaunliches Land ist. Aber du siehst das nicht so?
Ach, das ist wirklich (yikies)
oh god
I’m on phone now
spare me the hassle of using google translate and just write in English
😭😭
Oh okay
There’s a big stereotype that Norwegians…?
and then you’re asking if it’s correct
but what about Norwegians
Well here it's kind of like a stereotype that Norway is a really amazing country
But you would apparently not see it that way?
Yes, about the country, haha
oh no
The country is good
yeah
the climate is ass
lmao
Countrywise I can’t ask for much more
Ahh okay. I see
We score highest in terms of HDI for example
Democracy index
and orher UN charts
our only issue how expensive shit is
Many more northern countries really hate the weather they have
Name a price of smth in Germany
Unlike those southern European countries o.o
a bar of chocolate costs you €4
here
also we don’t have KFC
we don’t have Dunkin donuts
or whatever
They have a monarchy, and are one of the only countries to ban petrol cars as early as possible
Oh good, both of those places are awful anyway, lol
my point being we don’t have shit
and what we have is expensive
chocolate such as M&M is banned too
(one of my favs)
Well, that would make sense
again
shit expensive here
yk smth is wrong when chocolate costs you €4 for a normal bar
Many things are banned. But Norway is not in the EU, so it's sort of different
yes, we don’t have that article 13 bs
Well... there's always Sweden when you want to go shopping
....
someone mad at me bc of that i muted
hah nice joke
their shitty Swedish kroner is now worth equal to our superior Norwegian kroner
thus making it sometimes pointless to buy there
sure it might be a bit cheaper and you get a much broader selection but I’m not driving 2h to the border and 2h back for that
Pfff, oh.. oof XD
:o
Welp. Looks like Sweden is in fact catching up
Never mind the fact that they have twice the population
(like Czechia)
4 million of their 11 million consists of foreigners
Maybe 200k out of our 5,5m consists of foreigners
(Big difference)
Oh wow O.O
I didn't know it was that much
That's interesting :o
In Qatar over 90% of their population is foreign
Which... is quite crazy
So the vast majority of the inhabitants there can't technically even vote
But yes
yes
they offer Indians $200
work 5 months
get out
rough example but you get my point
Hmmm, well then
Yeah, I heard about that. The gulf countries do things quite differently then
$200 Lohn for 5 months of work?
yeah but the song litreally is “along the grass a flower grows, Erika”
@magic dawn Don't post it in the server please.
Could you guys suggest some good resources online for learning German?
this?
Yea, but Duolingo and other apps?
Duolingo is a decent resource to start with if you're a complete beginner, but it's neither efficient nor comprehensive!
What Duolingo will teach you about grammar is very limited, and none of the systems they use will help you practise much of it.
You can learn some vocabulary with it, but their method (based on the concept of spaced repetition) doesn't work for everybody, and the way Duolingo teaches is not very effective compared to the amount of time it requires from you.
So, if you find it useful, by all means keep using it, but remember not to fall for its gamification of language learning, and move past it when it stops being beneficial. Ignore the streaks.
In any case, keep in mind that Duolingo is not enough to learn a language, ever.
If you're looking for guidance or alternatives, check out >faq beginner in our #botchannel .
Busuu, Deutsch Für euch (yt channel), literally googling stuff bc there are many great sites
yea i sent a scrennie too
Yeah I saw
I will stay, don't bother with fluentu if you get an ad for it, it's a glorified anki/quizlet
That you have to pay for
And obv lessons here, I think there will be one Saturday next week for A level ppl
I kinda used Duolingo for a year or so
But, I reached a plateau
Yep
Then, I couldn't go higher and become more proficient
Only thing abt busuu is that it's too limited to learn well without premium so idk
I got nowhere with duo, other than confusion honestly
"now use den" no explanation whatsoever
So, what do you suggest?
Only free resources?
Nah, I can pay
I definitely suggest busuu or maybe pimsleur, but it depends on your level, and you still need other learning methods to go with it
If they're well rated, definitely try to make it a part of some schedule
If they're still useful, that is
That, they get over pretty soon
So, what level are you at?
Where can I practice my sentences over here? Are there any guys who correct your Deutsch?
I am around B2 level
I can converse in German, but you'll have to speak slowly for me to catch you XD
Most ppl will correct if I'm being honest. Literally in #general or #german-only and there are german only vcs, ppl usually join more towards nighy in Europe I find
Dw, I can't form complex sentences so I can't really say much 😂
Okay, btw, what level are you on?
I am from Japan
I am trying to apply for TMU university after two years or so
If you explicitly wanna know thay something is right or wrong, #questions or #writing I'm p much A1 right now bc I lack basics
Oh, okay
Also gl with that
I've had the experience of half assing language learning for 3 years, then actually full assing it for a couple months now. So I can definitely comment on which apps sucked (obv my own pov, but yeah)
There are reading sessions aimed at B2-C2 on Saturdays if you ever wanted to give that a go
Oh wow 😂 I can't imagine trying to learn more than one
No worries, I enjoy trying to help for some reason 😂
Yeah, this server is p chill and np
@late yarrow Check dm
So you dmed a random person on the server without asking, because?
🤣
Well then check general 1
I mean, I don't exactly have to.
Please help i'm doing german homework and i don't have way to go right now. 😭
🤣
Then ask questions in #questions or attempt it and put it in the relevant channel to be checked
Bro, I was just joking back then
Abt?
General 1, about the test. I usually get bullied coz I am Asian. So, that's why I wanted to know if u guys are active or not
I joined a telegram group and they abused me
Oh wow. Yeqh no if someone's trolling, racist, etc. you just ping the nice mods here
Yeah*
We regularly get ppl demanding help just after joining in general so it's always the case of, ask a question, look at resources, etc. but no cheating
Didn't get abused, and you kinda seem nice
Yeah, I wasn't gonna cheat
I don't have a test
Oof
Fair enough I think

i'm having another episode of "trying things for the first time so idk if i bought it spoiled or if it's supposed to taste this way"
well since it´s condensed it tastes different and has a somewhat thicker consistency than fresh milk- maybe it´s gotten bad ?
probably tbh

Hallo! Nice to meet you! (Wie sagt man "It's nice to meet you!" auf Deutsch?)
hi
Hello
Cool emoji lol
"Schön, dich/Sie kennenzulernen."
:ohisee: both work?
"dich" is informal (family, friends, people you know quite well) and "Sie" is the formal version (used with strangers, teachers, authority, etc.)
No, it doesn't. It isn't a "k" sound; rather a variatation of an "h".
Yeah, something like that.
still can be mistaked as a wierd k
if you dont know german
I like how english still a german word
like
I mean, there is a word "dick" in German, but that just means "thick", like thick socks or a thick blanket.
Danke schön. So, then how do you say "you're welcome." The response to "thank you."?
I remember gendered words using the latin alphabet "e"
There are many ways to say "you're welcome", but I think the ones you're most likely to hear are either "gern geschehen" or "kein Problem".
english plagiarised german so hard lol
Thank you! I usually hear "gern geschehen" as well.
Kein Problem! 🙂
@fleet dragon Your username is amazing!
danke
it's a server nickname, usually my name is rat boy lol
@south crypt Please read the server rules.
yes mr. german
Hello @hot cloak. Please don't repost messages across multiple channels. Asking in one place like #questions for example is enough. And consider rephrasing your question before reposting it, since it's really not clear what you mean.
i like boy rats
