German language can be broken up into vocabulary and grammar. And between those two, there are also the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. It sounds like you want to take the next semester of lessons without going back to the basics and retaking the old class.

It is therefore a somewhat straightforward problem. Simply achieve the same level of vocabulary + grammar, in all four skills again.

I would suggest emailing the teacher/counselor/somebody at the school, and asking for a topics list (grammar) and vocabulary list. Or similar. You should be able to self study off of those and at least improve reading and writing skills. Listening and speaking are the hard ones however.

The A1 / A2 CEFR levels are the European standard but there is still a lot of leeway in how classes actually get organized. If you know exactly the rubric /syllabus for your local class, that would be the most ideal.

I don't know how your school is setup, but most schools I've seen in my area have placement exams. The teacher will likely have you take a placement exam to determine what level you are at.

If you want to place into A2 or German 2 or whatever it's called in your area, simply pass the test at the appropriate level. Study ahead of time until you are confident you can pass.

You do get holidays. Duales Studium is separated into uni phase and work phase. The lengh of each phase differs on university but it's usually at least 2/3 months. During the working phase, you are entitiled to days off which are specified in the contract.

But it is still demanding. The learning schedule is intense and you have less time to absorb the knowledge.

I understand that full time students seemingly get more time off (such as a break between semesters and a longer break between end of one academic year and start of the other). But this time is usually used to do an internship and not fully for leisure. A lot of people also have Minijobs as full-time students so during the week they have both classes and work.
In case of a Duales Studium you get paid every month, no matter if it's a period to study or to work. You can focus on either one or another. And during the work period your weekends are totally off because you don't need to study.

So imho you just need to make a list of pros and cons for yourself and see what works better for your lifestyle.
