Discord didn't delete the messages for some reason. Thanks
You’re welcome.
I'm watching this YouTube video about beginner German and they recommend learning how to make plurals by first memorizing the genders ....
That's backwards from my brain though. I personally found it easier to memorize the plural form and then remember the gender from that lol
I do work on plural + gender for each noun.

@thick cloak Es gibt keine schwierigen Regeln und Zeitformen. Wenn man das Konzept versteht und begreift, muss man nicht hinterfragen, welche am schwierigsten ist. Meine Meinung nach sind alle locker

Hey
Hey

how are you
good how about you?
@hot cloak I'm fine.
@magic fossil okay that’s good
Where are you from
Germany what about u?
I am from Morocco
nicee
Nice to me to
Yeah, this doesn't feel like an A1 lesson to me lol
I mean yes, this is an A1 subject but I don't think people in A1 level would understand enough of it
Either that, or the beginner student is expected to send all of this to Google translate or something?
I think it's solid review, and I'll still recommend Grammatik aktiv.
honestly i agree when i was first starting out i couldn't just sit and like understand from this i needed someone to help me understand because i didn't know enough to do so on my own
It seems totally fine to me.
Yes you should feel comfortable using a dictionary to help you.
That's normal though.
If a teacher were around to explain things, this is usable. But for personal study?
No.
Absolutely not.
exactly the case
i think it gets a bit fair at around a2.1 or a2.2 where you know a bit to understand then
that was the case for me at least and her everyone has a different experience learning
I think it is totally usable for personal study for people who are comfortable learning grammar independently. It won't be suitable for everyone though.
What part of it do you find difficult?
Hi guys I'm trying pronunciation on google translate with ä and ae like Däm and Daem why do they sound different tho while it should sound the same, no? Is this because google translate is bad.
Don't use slurs please.
ok sorry
"Das Verb ,,wollen'' ist nicht höflich, wenn wir etwas direct von einer Person möchten''
Subordinate clause in lesson 6?
This book hasn't even covered akk or dativ yet.
or heck, the next chapter is lol Trennbare Verben, to give an idea of how early this is still....
A1 student wouldn't even have the grammar to understand this sentence even if they word-by-word translated it with a dictionary.
Unless the A1 here means A1+ (graduated from A1), but I find that unlikely given that its nominally about kann, will and möchte.
It is solidly an A1 lesson, nominally. I just don't think any A0 student (trying to reach A1) would stand a chance at this.
Its good review though. I intend to complete it all and work up to the A2 levels in this book (and eventually B1). But I wouldn't consider this a primary textbook for anyone.
I disagree. It's pretty easy to understand once you know the words. And yes, you're not expected to have the skill to make the sentences in the instructions. You're just expected to complete the exercises. If you can do that then it's suitable for you.
Why can't it be a primary textbook paired with some English explanations of grammar?
You make it sound like textbooks should be judged based on whether they can be used completely alone without any other resources.
Obviously any resource can and should be used alongside other resources.
Verb last in a subordinate clause is not "easy" for a beginner to get.
Maybe with a teacher explaining it right there.
or translating for the student.
certainly not something in the 1st or 2nd week that a "lesson 6" would cover.
I think it's hard for people who overthink it and feel like they need to understand everything. But people who are comfortable parsing sentences even if they don't understand how to use all the grammar generally won't have issues with this sentence.
This is the definition of wollen, and the first time its used in the textbook.
Its kind of important to understand.
Yeah, I'm fortunately well into "somewhere" in the A2 region. So its a piece of cake for me to read all of this even without a dictionary.
I'm just surprised to see this book labeled as A1-B1.
Yeah, you need to understand it. You don't need to write the sentence yourself. So you don't need to know how subordinate clauses work.
I think A1+ (student registered in A2.1) is sufficient to use this as self study or review of A1 concepts.
I'll show an example of a lesson 1 from a textbook I was using to learn Polish.
Here's an example of one totally suitable for beginners, that doesn't even include explanations at all.
I mean, its something a teacher could explain in 10 seconds.
So maybe that's really it. If this is intended for classroom study, its fine.
For some people that may be necessary but a lot of people would be fine just reading the textbook directly.
I don't really see what's difficult about the sentence "the verb wollen is not polite if we would like something directly from a person".
People may have some further questions about different scenarios and nuances but the basic description by itself seems easy to understand.
The verb wollen is not polite, when we something direct from a person like.
No?
Unless they're using Google Translate, that's the order it comes out as.
Because week 1 or week2 students are NOT going to know how to rearrange words into English style grammar.
Some people get stuck on literal translations, sure. But many don't.
Yeah, again, they don't need to translate it. They only need to understand it.
Understanding is much easier than translating.
After spending time translating it, they won't have a chance of understanding it in that order. Until someone shows them how German sentence structure and orders work. Which is solidly like A2.1 or something for subordinate clauses or at earliest maybe very late A1.
But yes, a Teacher can translate this important sentence and allow the students a chance at completing this page.
I feel like you're just projecting your personal weak points onto all learners. You have weak points in learning languages, maybe that includes having trouble with literal translations. Other people have completely different weak points.
You are not every learner.
You are just one person.
If it's too difficult for you, that's okay. Different things work for different people.
Do you... not like me or something?
Like if you want me to leave, its easier to just ban me. But I don't think I did anything wrong here.
My view on you is neutral.
Heh.
No one said you did anything wrong.
I find that hard to believe with that last sentence of yours.
Which sentence?
Look, its fine if you don't like me.
Is this a pride thing? I'm not trying to criticise your skills. I'm saying everyone is different and what you struggle with is different from what someone else will struggle with. That's true for all learners.
This isn't the first time you insult me directly.
This is a pattern with you.
I'm just trying to point out something here with this book I'm working on right now as an amusement. Its not even something I'm struggling with, and yet you've managed to turn it into an insult with my level of German.
When I'm actually struggling on a subject, its that much more annoying.
But today, I can just laugh it off.
I don't get what you mean? I never insulted you. "Everyone has weak points" is just reality, it's not an insult.
I think you're just reading too much into it. Your pride was hurt because I said you have some things you struggle with, and you take that as an insult when it's meant it be just an acknowledgement of us all being human.
Yes, it seems like that.
Want what to go?
This discussion. I'm curious where you want it to end.
Is there anything else you want to tell me?
I think it's over? I just clarified that what I said was a general comment and not specific to you. Everyone has weak points. So as long as that's clear I think that's all.
Sorry if you felt it was personal.
So just to be clear. You want to tell me that my pride projects my own weak points on other beginners.
Because I posted a picture from a book, I'm studying right now?
And that you're sorry for me, not for the words you said.
Ah, no, not because of the book. Because you keep talking about all students, all learners, etc. saying they all wouldn't be capable of doing it. So my point was, even if you personally have trouble with it, that doesn't mean everyone does, because everyone is different.
But since you're feeling overwhelmed by it, it probably seems to you like no one could do it.
Do you run this server to look down on others?
No? My time here is spent making it a good place to learn German. I think it shows by my comments here how much I take seriously the fact that all different types of learners need to be considered.
I think looking down on others who are learning is horrible and we don't tolerate it here.
I'll take that as an olive branch. But seriously dude, try better.
Its probably best if you don't talk to me. Because as a pattern over the last several months, you are someone who repeatedly feels like you are looking down on me.
Even when I make a silly comment like today's picture, you find a way to make it into a discussion about my "weak points" or "prde", or whatever.
So with all due respect, I don't want that anymore.
I've moderated before, so I get the difficulty of moderating.
And I have great respect for people who run servers and moderate.
I can't really do better if the problem is someone intentionally misunderstanding me. If you take my words as what they are - genuine attempts to be helpful - then that would resolve this conflict you're imagining between us.
But your words today are not helpful or cohesive to my learning and are closer to a distraction.
If you don't get it. That's fine.
If you make comments that relate to other people's learning, I will comment if I have something to say.
^^
Hello
Hii
hi
Yes I agree. Even the instructions use very difficult words
Why not write the instructions in English
Or the native language of the learner

jo we have similar pfps
I read the instructions thoroughly. I never learned können that way
I just learned it to mean can
Which it is
Und wenn du willst, kann ich dir auch mit Englisch helfen!

When I took university German for about 2 courses, the first course (it assumed no previous knowledge of German, so A0) had textbook tasks very similar to what you posted. If you go through textbooks on your own, many textbooks might require for the learner to supplement the textbook with other resources to makeup for the lack of teacher guidance.

does anyone else relate to, when listening to quick dialogue, trying to connect the particle at the end of sentences to the trennbare Verben but your brain not clicking quick enough to process it?
when reading it seems much easier as you can look back at the root verb and figure it out, but in speech it feels so much more difficult
Yeah, I think that's quite a common experience. Even without the particle, just having the verbs at the end can be tough.
Not really

Hello Guys
?
?

what do you guys think is the most productive way to read books in german to learn? when reading i would say i know about 60% of the words and must look the rest up in a dictionary
is that too low comprehension for it to be useful?
I don't know what you read, but the way I pretty much learned Japanese (after getting by grammar to kinda B1-ish level) was that I just started reading. And I looked up about 80%. (Also, because I hate rote memorization, I looked up everything thrice until it stook.) Make of that what you will. But it should be normal to have to look up every 2nd word at the beginning.
(and if you read a novel-length text, it should subside during doing it)
(I may hyperbole a bit, but its just ok to do it, really. Just do it.)
Wow
I wouldve thought that you need like a higher level to start reading
you mostly need vocabulary
I think i got a b1 in german so imma read a light novel or something
Any recommendations
?
if we had light novels lol
did you learn (or can you at least understand) relative clauses and infinite-clauses with zu (<- the latter, at least by vibe)?
as a shit-test, I could say, try to get the meaning of famous German songs
(e.g., "99 Luftballons")
I did but that was a year ago in high school, so im a little rusty
But i think id be able to get back on it real quick
which is fine for reading
Eid Mubarakkkkkkk

<@&305455824174710787>
I think if you're so interested in correcting me you should have handled it yourself since you know how to deal with the situation
Well actually I did. ^^
I wanted to help you to do it the correct way next time. I will end this discussion here, if you have further questions you can use #report-issue to talk to the moderation team directly.
there are light novels
i went to a shop and saw german manga and light novel translations
i know people say read childrens literature but i cant do that because i cant get myself to read something im genuinely not interested in
so i found manga nice
thats reassuring
Intensive vs extensive. Intensive reading is fine, it's just exhausting.
Extensive is necessary to feel better lol. (3+ pages in a shorter burst). When you understand more words there is a lot more pleasure from reading.
In both cases, you are learning words. Extensive covers more pages and finds more examples that solidifies the words and grammar you already know.
3 pages lol i think that will take me multiple hours
When you get used to it, you should be reading at maybe... half? of your native speed? Maybe faster? I dunno, way faster than you expect, in any case.
But "extensive reading" is when you basically understand most of the words, and don't need many lookups (or any lookups even: as you can start using context clues to guess the meaning).
At least at my level (A1+), its only possible with A1 graded readers. In A2 graded readers, I'm still having to look up some words. I don't think its possible to attempt smooth extensive reading of any native work (even children stories) until later.
But you can try "intensive reading" with basically anything. Just take your time, look up what you must and inch your way towards progress.
What I typically recommend is to think about what your goal is for each reading session. Because there's no "correct way". Your goal determines what's most important to focus on.
For example, if your goal is just to have fun while learning, then pick something you have a high level of comprehension in already and don't worry too much about stopping to question things.
If your goal is to pick up new vocab, have your dictionary on hand and look up all the words you don't know.
If your goal is to develop your grammar and sentence-parsing abilities, you probably want to go slowly and deconstruct a lot of the sentences, and maybe you won't get too far into the story, but that's no problem because it's not the goal of that session.
And your goal can be any combination of these or anything else that you want to work on. Try things out and see what works for you.
For example, one approach could be "I'm going to read and look up every unknown word until I get sick of doing that and then I'll just read normally for a while after that."
this makes sense
and would help with learning more vocab and like set phrases
thing is i know technically that i will be able to read a lower level text like a childrens book much easier, i just cannot bring myself to get through that as easily as struggling with a difficult text
Sure, you don't have to read a children's text. You could also look into stories written for your level.
Or articles.
For example, try out the magazine Deutsch Perfekt.
Here is a free online library: https://www.goethe.de/ins/fi/en/kul/bib/onl.html
Café in Berlin might be "easier than a native German Children's text", but it's also 80 pages long and far more material than a child would read.
The longer form graded readers are written for A1 adults who have attention spans for longer form stories, while carefully selecting words and grammar of the A1 level.
Nominally Cafe in Berlin is an A1-A2 graded reader, but I did fine at A0+.
I sollte lesen Momo und cafe in berlin
what the hell is a0+ bruh
lesen ans Ende
i guess it's really an informal one. "pre-a1"?
It's the + that's ticking me off
I dont like the sub-subdivisions like A1.1 and 2 but a0+ is really just ridiculous
A0+ is shortcut for me saying "studying A1 material, cannot pass A1 test yet".
Which was my level when I completed Cafe in Berlin.
Was ist Momo?
I’m planning to start learning German and would really appreciate your advice. How did you begin your learning journey? Are there any good English to-German study guides or resources you would recommend?
I’m also considering moving to Germany in the future, so I’d like to understand the situation of the IT industry for non German speakers.Thank you in advance for your help. Take care!
DW Deutsch Lernen/Anki/Easy German on Youtube/#resources
There are tons of resources here. But let's start with.... https://learngerman.dw.com/en/nicos-weg/c-36519789
Try to memorize the gender and plural forms of every vocabulary word, because German can be inconsistent with pluralization rules.
IE: it's not sufficient to memorize "Hotel", you must memorize "das Hotel".
As you get stuck on other subjects, feel free to ask around here! I think a lot of early learning is "learning how to learn".
Eventually you find a rhythm that works for you.
Es ist scheinbar ein einfaches buch
Um auf Deutsch zu lesen
Wer hat Momo geschrieben?
Google zeigt viel Bücher, die Momo heißt.
Der Autor ist Michael Ende
Hallo
OMFG.
240 Pages?
Oh wait, that's English edition.
302 Pages ???
yes its a book
I've mostly been looking for things less than 100 pages so far.
@shadow glen
dont think they write books that short
Café in Berlin is like 80 total pages.
With like 15 of those pages being glossary / exercises / answers.
momo isnt a grader reader its a regular german novel
Romane solcher Länge gibt es, jedoch werden sie als "Novellen" ("Novellas" auf englisch) eingestufen
Is Momo appropriate for A2ish?
Or should I wait till B1ish?
kP
When I first started reading books in german I already knew a few thousand words
So yeah that's more B1 level
I read The Neverending Story (500 pages), from the same author, and it took me half a year to get through it, though admittedly, it did make my vocab far richer
I recently read die Welle
might want to check it out
It was relatively easy
Er ist wieder da > Harry Potter > die Welle
sorted by difficulty based on my current reading experience
the general advice is that you should be targeting one level higher so at A2 B1 makes sense
@harsh tulip I recommend continuing here or in a ticket
once again, sorry for the disturbance, I wasn't aware of that and (without too much bootlicking) you admins do a pretty good job here, to keep the server in good condition!
Thank you
ja vielleicht so, ich habe keine Ahnung, aber alle die Bücher die ich habe sind länger als etwa 250 Seiten
im also A2 and tbh i personally dont find any use in restricting yourself to a certain level of text, i mean dont go reading Nietzsche, but progress definitely comes from forcing yourself, when youre at the edge of understanding
at least from my general experience in language learning
personally i enjoy reading, so when i am able to get to the barrier level of actually reading a text that is difficult, but also understanding the narrative even if i dont remember the more complicated vocab, it feels very rewarding to me
i like going through short story collections personally, good length for combination of lack of attention span but also interest in the story
Hmmm. My "Hard Reading" right now is Pokemon.
I guess from my perspective, I'm all for harder stuff but only one at a time!
I'll surely get to Momo and some of these other novels eventually. In fact, I must read them to achieve my overall goals.
thats perfectly fine, there is no objective frame of difficulty, only whatever is difficult for you
just have to find content that is on that 'edge' of your personal level
Bitte?

@trail locust i took over two weeks off from my studies so i wanna go back to study what i need to currently and make up for what i missed. current plan is like this
2 hours for my course/arbeit books
1 hour of grammar book drills
1 hour of stuffing in anki the wortschatz and fixed Ausdrücken i need
think this is a good plan or will it overwhelm me fast?
specially since i am not sure if doing grammar after 2 hours of course book stuff will have the same benefit as it would if i started with the grammar book

Oh, well. I mean that is the translation from 1949.

Hola jon
Anybody knows of any effective AI or program to train vocab by constructing random sentences using a word you want to train?
@trail locust had a presentation to do today, one of my feedbacks on things i need to work on is that i have a french accent :kekw:
lol
(i am not french nor do i speak it)
I do try to write an occasional sentence with my Anki words that come up..... It basically feels like a random word generator.

Careful. Mal is also a word that parents use when commanding their children.
Those modal Particles have a lot of mixed and subtle meanings.
Yeah, I recently started to learn that

I saw "mal" in every German exercise in one day accidentally. It showed up in Pokemon, the children song I was studying (the bee song above lol), and my graded reader all at the same time.
Yeah, I just what I’m getting at. It’s very careful how you say it, but it can sometimes make the sentence politer or more urgent.
I think I should avoid it for now until I know more German

sind Sie Deutscher*

ich lerne Deutsch auch:)

Freut mich dich kennenzulernen
Freut mich, dich kennenzulernen*
Danke für ihre helfen.
ahh. warum lernen Sie Deutsch? (:
Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland studiere, arbeiten und leben möchte.
Hi
helo!
schön. ich lerne auch Deutsch, aber mein Deutsch ist schlecht.
Deutsch ist zu schwierig bruhhh
real.
Sie konnen Fortschritte machen. Gib nicht auf
For reals 😹🤧
ich kann gut Englisch sprechen , aber Deutsch ist ein bisschen
yeah. ich kann nicht sehr gut Deutsch. haha
yeah , because some words in German have artikel
but english doesn't
which level are you? A1 or A2?
Do you get!!
ein bisschen lol
sometimes i use wrong artikel of some of the german words
Same here.
But with time you get it right
but most of the words in German borrowed english words so i can remember it
yeah
gift in English is a present but gift in German is like a poison lol . before knowing that , i only knew gift in german was like gift in english lol
wait till you learn about "umfahren" and "umfahren" xd
What does it mean btw?
there are two different meanings but one same word. haha.
Their meaning depends on the context
for example kirche and kirsche lol
i made mistakes
about two these words
no worries
umfahren “ich fahre um“ to run over something/someone
umfahren „ich umfahre“ to drive around something/someone
difference is in one being separable while the other isn’t
in spoken language you’d put extra emphasis on different syllables
ein Latte vs eine Latte ahh situation
Good morning all
Guten Morgen
Good morning
How are you doing

Hallo
Wie gehts, diggas?
Hi
mir geht es gut, aber ich weiss nicht worüber sprechen Sie
with German I'm at the point where if I have no subtitles I think I know every word, but if I put on subtitles I notice words I don't know but understand anyways
It took me 15 minutes of video to find 2 words I didn't understand, vorziehen and Krawand
Hallo Leute ☺️
Verabscheuen, Schranken, the 2 words I couldn't figure out in the second half of the episode, so that's 4 fully unknown words in 30 minutes
Schaue hoch und du siehst Stars
Ja, ich bin high und ich seh' doppelt
Ja, ich fliege Richtung Mars
Denn ich kauf' kein Corona, sondern Haze, ich bin Stoner (Ja)
Paff-paff on the low, ja, müde und trink' eine Cola @halcyon nebula

I was also planning to study in Germany,, but ,one of my friends dropped out of university recently….so im considering other options….
dont make your education plans dependant on others plans 😭

Hast du einen Deutschlernpartner, mit dem du wöchentlich sprechen könntest?
Ich spreche seit Jahren mit einem solchen Partner. Er lernt ebenfalls Deutsch, also kann er mich nicht wirklich korrigieren, aber die Übung an sich lohnt sich.

oder zur verfügbar steht
verständlich
es ist bei mir auch passiert
@thorny moat how exactly are you planing to help people? #introductions message
Angebot und Nachfrage
are ther any native german speakers age 16-20 who want to get to know each other?

Wirtschaftsdeutsch✨
Hallo
Basically as a beginner i purchased a self learning course from goethe from like 100 euros and it was shit so I kinda wish now that someone would explain me how Deutsche welle works and how to use it properly
I see.
I have explained many others how to learn for free
I just send the same voicenote lol doesn't hurt haha
So to answer ur question
I'll just tell them to use Deutsche welle if u are planning to study for free and if u can afford it then try to attend classes
German
Schlau
Supply = Angebot
Demand = Nachfrage
Wie gesagt, ich rede nicht mit einem Muttersprachler, sondern mit einem Deutschlerner. Sogar das hilft.
ich bin brillant danke bruder
Hallo
Hallo was geht ab
When you're saying how you're doing, you say, "Mir geht's X"
For example: Mir geht's gut
Ich bin brilliant = i am brilliant (as in, I am smart)
@opaque flint Schreib mir dein Land
Das es sehr gut
Hallo wie geht's 😉

ich mache das ein- oder zweimal pro woche
Gut danke
