I have a difficulty in pronouncing German u and r correctly.
I can do teuer, at least I think I am doing it correctly. But it's hard to do it correctly and I'm the order of teurer in my brain.
It took me days to say zurück correctly for example. I'm not even sure if I can consistently say zurück on command....
whats your native language
eu is pronounced oi
-er is pronounced a
send some audios into #pronunciation myb i can help

Hmm, I didn't see that channel. I'll send some samples later when I get the time!
bonk @hasty socket
You have prescribed 477 bonks to @hasty socket.
@hasty socket my friends got me Pokemon Weiße for Christmas. I'm A1+ at the moment but was thinking of getting started soon. Any tips? I did play 4th and 6th Gen but I missed out on 5th ...
I'm pretty confident I can beat Pokemon. But to do so in German will be the real challenge lol.
I think I am A2 knowledge-wise / reading / grammar, if I take it slowly. My vocab definitely isnt ready though ...
@hot cloak please don't post random links or advertise on this server.
Gen 5 is completely different from every other Gen in a lot of ways. I dare say you'll have a hard time but you can try it
As an FYI, here's how the game greeted me.
It feels slightly above A1 level. Just slightly /s
Hopefully the actual gameplay / non-technical parts go smoother lol
Lol yeah
Hallo, ich bin neu hier. Wie kann ich Zugang zu den Sprachkanälen bekommen?
is ur DS modded?
Normal DS should be able to play Gen5, that's before region lock. The issue is 3DS and DSi.
I'm just wondering if you modded it
because i modded both of my 3ds
My 3DS has Luma3ds mod.
thats awesome
Guck mal eine Beine da Summ Summ. Wtf a song about looking at legs?
Then I realize my typo lol
ei vs ie strikes again!
ja
i love mine
are you streetpassing with it aswell
i got TWO in october 2024 that was so awesome and cool
i dont streetpass cuz i keep it at home mostly
thats so awesome
what games do u play
i keep it at home aswell because the ds is like triggering the anti theft security in the stores 😟
but when i used to walk around daily i kept it in my bag and see if anyone else does it
especially in the malls
i dont play much usually but i wanna replay all the pokemon games atleast once, and then move them to the newest ones to collect
or if i feel like playing anything i did when i was a kid bbut thats like some obscure games 😭
me too
im playing hg&ss right now
but the xp scaling is so slow im bored
yeah its BAD
kinda makes me mad people keep calling it the best game ever because all of the flaws are still in it from the original gold silver 😭
im pretty sure i did the same

bro i loved d&p
gen 4 was my favourite since childhood, but i def had it better in my memory
platinum is still good but it absolutely has its flaws
diamond and perl had ALOT of flaws but as a kid and when it was the newest games you just didnt really care it was still fun
real
i actually didnt get my first mainline game till 2016, sun and moon
when i was a kid like in 2007, i had pokemon mystery dungeon
which dungeon did you have
i didnt realise they also had a third version until like last year 😭
i think it was time and darkness and then sky
the blue one
i dont remember the name
but i couldnt even read at that time so i had no idea what was happening
Hello dear
i think blue is explorers of time
i think so too
I still have all my ds's from my childhood
they're in great condition
but I mostly play on my 3ds xl because the small screens hurt my eyes
i think ihave my dsi aswell but its with my mom
i had a 3ds bu my mom got me a new 3ds xl because the internet wasnt working on that one and i have it ever since
the internet issue was just switching something in the router so it was for nothing 😭
i dont even think back then it was that mch
like 300
im pretty sure a switch 2 costs more sadly
I will marry an apple
back then no, but nowadays i see new 3ds xl selling for $400
yeah these days, because the ds is still the greatest handheld ever made 😊
still have my gamecube aswell and i hope i can keep them for aslong as i live
that's cool. i never had a GameCube
i had a SNES i think
snes is just as cool
wish i had one but you can play all the games anyway
even on switch!
that's cool

never had one and never was into it either but a while ago i emulated an snes racing game and it was weidly intriguing
very simple game and simple controls but i couldn’t stop playing it

The simplest way to learn German is to find topics you don’t understand yet and search for explanations of them. This list provides you with a guide for which topics to learn if you are completely new to German. Type the topic into Google (or YouTube) and start learning!
1: Alphabet (especially ä, ü, ö and ß)
2: Basic greetings (hello, goodbye, etc.)
1: Noun gender & plurals
2: Nominative case (What are cases?)
3: Nominative pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.)
4: Verbs in present tense
5: Definite/indefinite articles
6: Accusative case (for nouns)
7: Accusative pronouns
8: Word order of simple sentences
9: How to ask questions
See Part 2 on the next page.
- Always learn the gender of a noun when you learn a new noun
- Learn to use a translation dictionary (e.g. dict.cc, leo.org)
- Use
>faq resourcesto see our list of German learning resources - For listening and pronunciation practice, try watching movies or videos (incl. YouTube)
- You can listen to pronunciation for words on websites like dict.cc, forvo.com, and others
- Practice writing sentences every day (and asking people to correct them)
- Ask as many questions as possible
- Don’t be scared to make mistakes!!!! If you don’t let yourself make mistakes, you will never be able to learn German
@quasi gull maybe this will help you
Lol
Yh lol
Okay thanks

Wow nice name
Your name is similar to a well known astronaut that reminds me of her
Yours!!! Great

If theres anyone in this world that can teach german, its you
now I feel offended
Why what's wrong
Im a good teacher
Meow meow
Really
That means you are going to teach me privately
if @prisma aurora said I’m a good teacher, it should be right
Don't know
How
Ohh really lol
Is their student discount?
Nah never,
Can‘t do that, most people learning a new language are students. It‘s just not sustainable
Well It make sense
i took two years of german and barely anything stuck in my brain XD
Ohh lol
i am the best
sup folks, any hack for mastering a2/b1 german speaking fluency?

Please make sure to read Part 1 before starting Part 2!
1: Conjunctions (coordinating and subordinating)
2: Subordinate clause word order
3: Dative case
4: Dative verbs
5: Verbs with two objects (e.g. geben)
6: Prepositions (accusative, dative, and two-way)
7: Spoken past tense (Perfekt)
8: Written past tense (Präteritum)
9: Genitive case
10: Relative clauses
11: Adjective declension
- Make sure to practice writing and reading simple texts
- Some of these concepts are confusing to start with, so it’s a good idea to ask for help in #questions when you’re unsure
- You should use a declension chart to help with declension to start with, because you won’t be able to memorize it straight away
- After you feel confident with creating sentences, you can start learning the adjective declension properly by using the command >faq adjective declension and reading the guide provided

Hallo!
I am a beginner in German
I came across this question in a book
A: Wo wohnen Sie?
B: Wir wohnen in Granz.
Is Sie also used for plural to show respect?
I am also beginner but yeah Sie with uppercase S used to show respect
I think it is can be used to plural, too
Vielen Dank!
It's just like you in English. You can be singular or plural.
Long ago, English used to have 'thou', we only use it religiously anymore but it's the familiar / colloquial way of saying you 509 years ago
yup its both plural and singular
Danke schön!
Ah yeah, I know. I actually study English literature, and ‘thou’ is used a lot in Shakespeare.
Danke!

WOW
Warum?

I don’t understand anything. Don’t they just speak German in Austria or what? And what’s this Standard German? Is it different from what we’re learning?😅
ja seit ich 8 bin
ich bin halt österreicher also eh
ja
no its exactly what you're learning but its different from what we speak
german dialects can be wild xd

Wow sounds very different
So, Standard German is basically the German from Germany, right?
Bist du deutsch?
18 xd
nope every country has their own standard
they mostly differ in vocabulary and sometimes grammar
theyve been developing seperately for about 1.2k years lol
Hello
How different is Austrian german and German german?
Does Bavarian use "sein" instead of "haben" as the helping verb there?
I'd compare it to different English dialects
British vs American vs Scots
It's about that level of difference
Wait, the Bavarian there looks like, "Was ist denn mit euch los?", not "Was ist hier passiert?"
If you're worried about understanding one when you only know the other, you should definitely be able to. But ofc everyone has their own accent and dialect, just like anywhere else
Again, the Bavarian looks like, "Er hat eingespäht mit seinem großen Auge", nothing about the nest is mentioned like in the Standard German version
Oh, thanks, also I'm just curious, I barely speak a word of German
Viel Erfolg
Hey if anyone is native or fluent in german and willing to help me and my friend from EYGPT to check our pronunciation it would be helpful!!
Try #1065443550004781067 . ^^
Yup!
Naja eher wie scots und englisch lol
Scots ist außerdem eine separate sprache lol
Yuh its "was ist mit euch los"
its interesting that he has "ench" in his dialect, usually it'd be something like enk or eng
I actually have no idea how to translate einagspechd
😂
einhergespäht macht keinen sinn auf deutsch gell xD
I also dont know what a butzemann is tbh
Lol
Would you say haben in german here?
Lemme give you the most direct translation possible lmao:
Ein Stimmchen später kommt der Vater wieder heim. "Was ist denn mit euch los" , sagt er, "Hat euch etwa etwas getan" (the etwa here means jemand, its just the same word for us ig)
Ihr seid ja ganz .... dadådad ...
Japanese version plz
Does this channel block jp characters xd
It wouldnt make sense at all
I only understand Japanese
"the father came home a little voice later"
小さな声の後に父は家に帰ってきた xD
Yes yes
What y'all discussion about rn
Hi leute wie geht's euch
Ich auch danke, wie war dein Tag
woher kommst du?
China
wohnst du in Deutschland?
I mean, it's "sind...weggeflogen" in standard German.
But the Bavarian has "hand", which looks to me much more like "haben" than "sein".
nearly "Settled" in my new apartment in leverkusen what is there in the city dats fun
It's just s > h
It's sein
haben is håm
se haumd vs se hand
Sie haben vs sie sind
🤣
Yeah, but WHY DO THEY LOOK SO SIMILAR
They have different vowels 🫠
It sounds to me like sein and haben are merging a bit in Bavarian
Absolutely not LOL They just sound similar
other ppl do get confused cause other dialects use those exact same forms for have
hamma is not haben wir that would be homma
For example
XD
ama vi
Wot haha
haben wir -> haben wia -> hamn wia -> hamn wi -> ama wi -> ama vi
Hallo
It's related to English and derived from old English, so it's similar enough in the way I was talking about
But yes it's a different language and not a dialect (though that depends on who you ask still)
i have same issue, sry
Mnemonic devices
Assigning definitions to word, giving associations
You don't want to think about the translation as much. If you remember the actual meaning of the word, not what it translates to in your native language, you are more likely to remember, and it's better for language learning
Hey there

This is probably A2+ level. I'm not.... quite ... understanding everything yet.
Maybe its more about how I grew up, but I grew up in the late GI-Joe era. PSAs like this are extremely nostalgic to me.

Hi all, Anki’s 19th birthday was about 4 months ago. It would have been a good time to pause and reflect on what Anki has become, and how it will grow in the future. But I ended up letting the moment come and go, as I didn’t feel like I had the free time. It’s a feeling that’s been regrettably common of late, and I’ve come to realise ...
Change of ownership coming to Anki. Let's hope for the best.

Hey, sorry for late reply. I finished practicing German by the time you messaged yesterday.
these are great, also cartoons you're already familiar with in your native language can be super helpful. Spongebob was really easy for me because I know it so well from watching as a kid and most of the jokes are visual gags anyway.

Do you really say "muar" for "muss"?
/muɐ/? /muə/?
I find the R intriguing
I would have expected "muas" instead, as you said
müssen comes from müeȥen <- muoȥan

Schwa doesn't exist in bv

Hi
Is moving to Osterreich or Deutschland for better labor rights a valid reason?
We don’t have those in America
It’s a major reason Europe in general is a goal for me. I’ll take any Racism I see, I just don’t want to die of overwork.
Major reason I want to learn German.
@trail locust got my first test results, 51%. Sigh. The average is in the 40s tho with one classmate getting 20%.
What's killing me is that I was confident in my grammar but that's where I did My worst and with hören it was horrible. Lesen was as i expected
I also do study daily, son I don't know. Sigh
I guess I’ve kinda given up on things getting better in America
Na ja, wenn du schon C1 wärst, würdest du den Kurs nicht besuchen müssen
Du solltest übrigens jede Gelegenheit benutzen, um auf Deutsch zu schreiben/sprechen
Tu so, als ob du schon ein Muttersprachler wärst, benutze die Sprache, als ob die dein Default wäre.
(Das ist ein Hinweis, den ich von einer YouTuber-Deutschlehrerin gehört habe)
In German it is Österreich, but in English those countries are called Austria and Germany. You do have labor rights in America, they are simply not as stringent as in Austria.
Which country is better for you to work in is highly dependent on your field and personal circumstances. If you are a software engineer at a large tech company, you will see this very differently from a cashier at McDonald’s - then again if you are a cashier at McDonald’s your chances of immigration are slim. Nobody can decide which country is better for you based on news headlines and statistics with zero context.
I’m an aspiring IT specialist
I have a degree, though it doesn’t seem to be doing me much good in this economy.
So are you unemployed or studying?
Employed
Just not in IT then?
Just paid very shit wages and overworked to hell.
I see, so not in IT.
It’s marginally related, I do troubleshoot phones and stuff
Not truly IT, but it’s marginally related.
Perhaps the problem is not with the United States but rather with your job and company. The USA has many jobs. The market for computer technology is tough but i have heard it is in Germany too.
I’m thinking that maybe my path into the country will be doing a Masters Abroad.
It’s tough, I agree.
But at least in Germany, you guys can Unionize.
Here, Labor Unions are basically shot.
Ronald Reagan’s fault.
Sure, if that’s your priority.
You will have to decide if that remains your priority after having gotten a masters degree .
We here in America have much worse labor rights than most countries in Europe
That’s probably a much more accurate assessment
And I am not in Germany so I don’t know what union, for example, is active at let’s say NVIDIA - if any.
Okay, fair.
Essentially, my options for a life are “wait for things to get better here in America”, which, well, the people are too lazy to change things.
Or move abroad where things are a bit better.
Again, your issue is with your job or is it not?
Your job which is one among many in the USA.
And can be changed by you.
No, it’s with how the American system allows these jobs to get away with all this shite
We don’t have protections.
I would personally say I am happy with my job in America.
Even if I were to get a “better” job, it wouldn’t solve this. And it wouldn’t protect me from being thrown into another job with shitty rights.
I would not trade it for its equivalent in Denmark - though that’s not really an option atm because I do not speak Danish.
And it won’t make Zohran Mamdani or Bernie Sanders president any time soon.
Two politicians who campaign actually making things better for people like me.
Well, many people do a masters in Germany, so you will not be alone in that. Just know that to be competitive and land a better job you will need fluent German.
Yeah, well, that’s my motivation.
Sure. I hope you find a good job wherever that may be. Also check out levels.fyi, gives some good insights into at least the salaries at multinational tech firms.
#1033125270217048246 might be able to help with more logistics of studying.
One thing I know is that though some masters programs are offered in English, German is really key to be competitive. Also private universities are not as highly regarded in general as public ones.
Where I work, there is at least one German man who grew up in Germany and now lives and works in the USA.
Some from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe as well. Though some of course remain in their home countries, not everyone wants to move to the US or has a visa, and the H1B rules aren’t making anything easier.
I don’t know any Americans who have moved abroad but I’m sure they’re there as well.

Hi i wanna chat in Deutsch
Hm, okay, I'll see those books 📚
Anyone else agree with that??
I wanna chat with people in deutsch
Yes, you're right. But I want someone to help me! Especially someone native in German 🇩🇪
I mean im myself b2 german, my brother and most of my family are studying in german or have experience in german . Menschen is usually good for the goethe exam but research urself as well
We kinda talked about like from our experience these two books were much better
But again it’s rly all abt perspective
I don't want to learn this language for just an exam! I want to know German first!!
Do you have those files?
Something like booklet, or notes in classrooms... 🤔🥲
Let me check wait
Unfortunately I don’t have the PDFs since I used the paper version of the book and all my notes are in my copybook
@trail locust sorry i was in class yesterday and when i went home i slept, gonna check out the video
here's the interesting thing tho
the class has 11 people,
1 didn't get her marks
2 got 70% mark
3 got the 60% mark
only i got 50% mark
3 got the 40% mark
1 got 20% mark
i did better than i thought in lesen, my highest mark, 8 out of 14
Hören i knew i would do pretty bad in it, the main issue was the wortschatz i didn't know enough wortschatz to understand the answers or what is being said, 3 out of 8
the rest were grammar which funny enough, i THOUGHT i did better in it than not. something i thought i'd get 5 out of 5 of became 1 out of 5, another thing i was also confident i would ace was 1 out of 3. i even got half a point deducted because i put the auch of " wie auch " somewhere i shouldn't and when i asked my teacher where should one put auch normally she said somewhere around after subject... which is what i did? so yeah. my biggest fehler were the grammar that i was confident of. fun stuff
Anyone watching "extra auf deutsch" on YouTube channel?
Klingt, als ob deine Lehrerin sehr streng beim Benoten ist. Der Druck ist also hoch. Aber weißt du was? Durch hohen Druck entstehen Diamanten. Am Ende wirst du dich also sehr viel verbessert haben 😄
Ja, du hast Recht.

Hi everyone, I’m new to this server because I want to learn German as efficiently as possible. I don’t have a time limit for studying it; I’d like to understand and speak it at a B1 level, or maybe even B2, mainly to handle basic and intermediate conversations on different topics. I’ve tried watching YouTube videos and reading Reddit posts about the most efficient way to learn, but I’m a bit confused about which approach is best. If you have any advice or tips, feel free to contact me privately. I’d really appreciate it. Thank you 😉
oh nice- what's like ur level btw?
completly beginner with the language
oh nice-
Better focus on reading, vocabulary and grammar rn, before speaking
can you give any tips to studying it, for example i need to start from these.... and maybe focus on that... use this tool, or maybe flashcards
Id suggest the book Begegnungen, honestly I personally went to a tutor but some study it themselves by just
- Learning the grammar in the book and practicing it in the books workbook
- Resding and trying to understand the texts and memorizing the words you don’t know from them
But if you’re completely new like don’t even know the alphabet id suggest starting with a tutor
faq nicos
Nicos Weg is a free online program aimed at helping people learn German. It includes video, audio, text, grammar explanations, notes, vocabulary, and exercises. It also includes very useful cultural and bureaucratic information, such as how to open a bank account, while teaching you the relevant grammar and vocabulary.
It’s fairly popular and well-recommended, but keep in mind that you can’t learn a language with only one resource, even if it’s a good one!
You can find the program here: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/nicos-weg/c-36519789
You can also see various other courses for learners by dw.com here: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/overview/
It’s a good start from what I have heard from many learners.
thank you so much guys

Please get the correct role then.
Role?
Yes, you have the A Level role right now.
honestly i don't use Discord much, so I don't know whether you are trolling, or that is how this server works 😂
#get-roles and then click on the blue thing on the bottom right corner.
oh great. Thanks. Now I get it 🤝
Youtube zeigt Extra 3 für mir.
Obwohl ist das Stück zu schnell.
Ich brouche ein langsamer Stück, aber kein langweilig Stück.
Zeigt mir
English habits die hard.
idk what you mean by Stück, probably die Folge or das Video
My vocab has Theaterstück, just working with my best word lol
I did know Folge... but das Video seems the most correct for what I was going for. Thanks!
yeah then
Ich brauche ein langsames, aber nicht langweiliges Video
nicht?
Really?
I guess that makes sense, since it is more brauche vs brauche nicht
Yeah I do like that better now that I think of it.
micj

Hallo !....
...guten Tag?
Hallo ! Ich bin neu hier
Hallo.. Leute
Hallo
@trail locust bro i dunno what it is but i was watching something in youtube while sleepy af and suddenly i started to understand everything like hören suddenly became clear, i didn't do anything special it just... happened
Take a look at #1065443550004781067.
ich hatte nen ähnlichen eurekamoment
nicht beim hören sondern beim lesen
das ist mir vor einer Jahre auch passiert, denn ich habe zu viel gelesen.
das Jahr
Ich weiß nicht, warum es lang das Hören gedauert hat.
Stimmt, und die neuen Worte nachzuvollziehen.
die neuen Wörter
I've noticed that my brain has good days and bad days
On the good days I'm so much better at German. Anki flies by with high % good. I can listen to songs and understand much of them. Etc. Etc
Then it all disappears on another day lol
being able to only study for 80 minutes sucks
but my brain doesn't want to see more letters for a while
@mild jewel disarms you and gives you a taste of your own medicine. Serves you right.

Hey can anyone tell the top Universitäten in deutchland for studying after 13th grade(for bachelor's)
[Szene: Eine chaotische Küche. Überall Rauch. Ein Mann stürmt wütend herein.]
KLAUS (schreit): Was soll dieser Wahnsinn?!
Schritt eins, Schritt zwei, Schritt drei! Es gibt ein System! Es gibt immer ein System!
(Knallt einen Topf auf die Arbeitsplatte.)
Sieh dir das an! Totale Katastrophe! Absolutes Küchenchaos!
(Wirft erneut die Arme hoch.)
So kann ich nicht arbeiten! Ich brauche Ordnung! Struktur! Belüftung!
(Plötzlich ruhiger, aber immer noch angespannt.)
Na gut. Wir kriegen das hin. Wir putzen. Wir fangen von vorne an. Aber dieses Mal… halten wir uns an das Rezept.
(Zeigt energisch.)
Und niemand fasst den Ofen ohne Aufsicht an. Verstanden?!
(Murmelt, während er nach einem Feuerlöscher greift.)
Unglaublich… komplettes Chaos…::tiefer, genervter Seufzer::… Ich hätte einfach Pizza bestellen sollen.

Hallo leute

Or is it "endlich ich deutsch sprechen kann" ?
the first one
the second is subordinate clause word order (after words like dass for example: Ich bin froh, dass ich endlich deutsch sprechen kann
Thanks that's really helpful
omg how could u forget to capitalize smh smh /j
Man muss es in diesem Fall nicht großschreiben
Just "Deutsch" right?
deutsch as in in a German manner, rather than German the noun ?
