For a simple sentence like that, pretty much.

However the main difference is that dessen is mainly used as a relative pronoun, which can't be done with the possessive pronouns.
Example:
Die Frau, deren Kind ich sah, steht dort.
The woman whose child I saw is standing there

For sentences like my two examples above, the two words (used as possessive articles) can be used to distinguish between different people.

Der Mann sah den Jungen und seine Schwester.

Der Mann sah den Jungen und dessen Schwester.

In the first sentence it's not clear whether seine is referring to the sister of the man or of the boy. Dessen makes it clear by referring to the last person mentioned (the boy).
