The ticket doesn’t show up in any of the govt databases either.

rugged cypress
#

idk how getting a ticket works in Djermany thisiskrowskiirl

hot cloak
#

Nah, it’s for the USA.

rugged cypress
#

oh 🤨

hot cloak
#

I have to go back to the USA for this shady shit.

humble sandal
#

That's an expensive speed ticket

hot cloak
#

Yeah. No kidding.

#

I hate my country. idiotbulli

#

Like, I would’ve paid cash for it in person if offered the chance.

rugged cypress
#

Did you forget about it before leaving?

hot cloak
#

No. I just literally could not do anything about it or contact anyone.

#

The county that issued it hasn’t even posted it once on their site.

#

And now they finally reach out by mail

#

Ughhhhh

rugged cypress
hot cloak
#

Yep. I’m going back to the USA to deal with it and I’m going to hold off plans to make shit work in Germany for a year or two.

#

Unless my boyfriend literally were to ask me to marry him, I’d be screwed anyways.

humble sandal
#

Didn't you just get a contract? I was just reading that

hot cloak
#

Yeah, only for them to state at last minute they need a language certificate I don’t have.

humble sandal
#

No one ever asked me for one, but I guess it reassures some

hot cloak
#

Yup. Imma work on getting to C level and get certs

#

I’ll make the most of howevermuch time I find myself stuck in the USA for.

#

And I’ll gain more experience towards an EU Blue Card

#

With a 2nd bachelors degree from an internationally accredited university.

#

Maybe I’ll go for a degree in German

#

Nah. I’ll just use Goethe for the German

humble sandal
#

A degree in German would look good

hot cloak
#

True, but the time would probably be better spent getting more IT skills once I CAN attend the university I’m going to

#

I can’t actually take classes from my university until August.

#

Which gives me 8 months to waste

#

May as well take short notice courses from Goethe and get the cert from them, knowing it’ll be recognized.

In German, "vorweisen" and "zeigen" both mean "to show," but they are used in slightly different ways.

"Vorweisen" is used to indicate that someone is presenting or producing something as evidence or proof. For example:

Ich muss meinen Ausweis vorweisen, um in das GebƤude zu kommen. (I have to show my identification to get into the building.)
Kannst du mir bitte deine Arbeitserlaubnis vorweisen? (Can you please show me your work permit?)

"Zeigen" is more general and can be used to refer to showing or displaying something to someone. For example:

Kannst du mir bitte den Weg zum Bahnhof zeigen? (Can you please show me the way to the train station?)
Sie zeigte ihm ihr neues Kleid. (She showed him her new dress.)

In summary, "vorweisen" is used specifically to indicate that something is being presented as evidence or proof, while "zeigen" can be used more generally to refer to showing or displaying something.

Duolingo isn’t going to make you fluent. Fluency comes when you spend time having conversations —especially with native speakers. An hour a day in a piece of software will not make you fluent.

Duolingo

Duolingo is a decent resource to start with if you're a complete beginner, but it's neither efficient nor comprehensive!

What Duolingo will teach you about grammar is very limited, and none of the systems they use will help you practise much of it.
You can learn some vocabulary with it, but their method (based on the concept of spaced repetition) doesn't work for everybody, and the way Duolingo teaches is not very effective compared to the amount of time it requires from you.

So, if you find it useful, by all means keep using it, but remember not to fall for its gamification of language learning, and move past it when it stops being beneficial. Ignore the streaks.

In any case, keep in mind that Duolingo is not enough to learn a language, ever.

If you're looking for guidance or alternatives, check out >faq beginner in our #botchannel .

It’s fully recognized in the USA but the university doesn’t have the best rep anyways so I woulda had to transfer at some point anyways.

# vital tide (speaking about native language of school)

I dont want to be rude but I just cannot fathom the multitude of people who cannot seem to understand just how much better than average native speaker will always be over even the most advanced L2 learner (besides rules/grammar knowledge). And how CEFR are literally impossible to equate to native speakers

#

Native speakers are thus way beyond the threshold of C2 level, tho they are not to be equated anyway

naive charm
left jolt
#

The single most thing is idiomatic usage, which to an extent is impossible to learn. Vocab is also up there, but is theoretically possible

#

By idiomatic usage I mean bending the language to work in unusual or different ways or having a grasp to construct phrases and ideas that are .. just how a native speaker would be able to show a more developed use and interaction than learners would be able to

#

This, to a certain extent, is impossible to learn which is why CEFR cannot equate

celest thunder
#

i agree with ziel here

#

no CEFR level will ever get you to a native level, but i think that its because both measure two different things

even a native has to prepare for a C1/C2 exam, because the language in the exam isn't something occurring naturally from day to day

#

it takes more than a certificate to speak and process languages naturally like a native speaker

left jolt
#

And... to be fair many C1/C2 certificate holders are not really fluent at all

celest thunder
#

yup

potent lava
#

I disagree. I think it is absolutely possible to get to the same level as a native speaker. Sure we might never make it to 100% but once you reach (an estimated) 95% most people won't be able to tell you're not a native speaker

naive charm
left jolt
#

Thats not what I mean

#

You can go slang route "I aint done gon finna" or in a better case stuff like knowing "i obliterated" my toe on that banister versus "broke" "hurt" "fucked up" "rear-ended"

#

In fact thats good, using words that are normally for other things in other ways like rear-ending is normally for cars but you can say it for a lot of other things and non-natives do not always have that grasp

potent lava
#

I feel like that's just the level of immersion tho

#

there is gonna be things you as a native English speaker won't understand if you go Australia

left jolt
#

Yes, and which is why natives will have had way more immersion to be at that ability, whereas a learner will never catch up. Not that this truly matters because you can learn to a good enough level where that is minute in difference

#

But its just true that effectively a learner can never "be better" than a native speaker, in the whole of it all. Yes, they will "know" why and how grammar works but thats really void of all meaning compared to utilization of the language

potent lava
#

you have time to hop in voice for a minute?

left jolt
#

I don

potent lava
#

well like I said I disagree, I think it's possible to catch up and in some cases even overtake a native speaker, they might be rare but they are not non-existent

left jolt
#

I do not understand how you can disagree with objectivity

#

By "a native speaker" do you mean the least educated or the most?

#

As in, a learner can overcome the most educated speakers

potent lava
#

is a learner ever gonna overtake someone like Jordan Peterson? No. Can a learner overtake the average person? Yes

#

it depends on who you're comparing obviously.

left jolt
#

You are underestimating the average person

#

I have talked to people who are objectively less intelligent and are still better than learners

potent lava
#

I think you are overestimating the average person

left jolt
#

The average person has complete fluency

left jolt
potent lava
#

sure and I think a learner can achieve that

left jolt
#

Even accent wise?

potent lava
#

yes

left jolt
#

Not sure I believe that

potent lava
#

maybe not 100% but close to that

left jolt
#

You are forgetting that a native would be at this 100%

#

So how could they surpass that

potent lava
#

I mean accent wise, not language wise, there is more to a language than an accent

left jolt
#

Yes but if a native already has the accent over you, which is not close to everything but still very important, and have other things over you, i fail to see how its possible

naive charm
#

For the accent it will be hard work to get that perfect for non natives. That's why most learners never bother that much.
But as Catoku said apart from the accent it's just a matter of how much productive immersion you had.

#

There is no clear line to be drawn

celest thunder
#

agreed, which is why i said no CEFR certificate will get you close

#

with immersion its 100% possible

#

will take many years though

naive charm
#

And my English can sounds and function like a natively acquired one even though I only learned it later in life.

left jolt

naive charm
#

potent lava

I am unsure on how to convince you of something you are clearly not receptive to, all I can say is I didn't speak a word of English until I was about 14 years old, I am married to a Man who only speaks English, have lived in Canada for only 3 years and every single person that learns English isn't my first language after month of interacting with me is more than just a little surprised

livid geyser
naive charm
#

You can get stuck on weird speaking habits though if you start learning a language with grammar and weird unnatural constructions.

left jolt
#

Id disagree they can reach the same level. I do however agree that they can reach a level which is close enough to effectively be indistinguishable as the sort of language that is being differentiated does not just come out all the time in day to day life, its more of a rare occurrence where you learn something else like that

naive charm
#

The way most learners nowadays approach a new language with grammar books in school, you are probably right. They will never have the time to rewire their brain naturally after having been exposed to textbook language and early output mistakes for so long.

#

I would say the earlier you start naturally immersing yourself the closer you can get to a native as you don't need to revert the damage of grammar drills and language courses

naive charm
potent lava
#

it also depends on the language it self I guess, I find English to be significantly easier than German, for everyday use in particular

left jolt
#

Also it seems the english learners here rarely make mistakes and the german learners, even higher levels, make mistakes on the daily

naive charm
#

Me trying to learn Chinese will need more than 10 years of exposure probably to get to the level of an adult native, as the further you get the slower it will be to improve.

left jolt
#

Yes there is a guy Vladimír Škultéty who is translator and interpreter of Mandarin Chinese and he said it took him 10 years

#

apparently he sounds like Taiwanese native but i couldnt verify

naive charm
#

A 18 year old native will have 18 years of exposure. So if I want to reach that level it's no wonder that I am nowhere near that after having only exposued myself 30h a day for 3 years. Far from it.

But it's theoretically possible and has been done.

left jolt
#

however I work as an interpreter of Mandarin Chinese, Slovak and English and speak 15 languages, 11 of them at a C1-C2 level.

#

he good with learning

naive charm
#

But for most adults in their day to day life practically Impossible to reach native level when you only invest a few hours everyday.

#

It do be theoretically possible though.

#

And that's the point.

#

The term native speaker is ambiguous

left jolt
#

only somewhat

naive charm
#

Where is the cutoff point?

left jolt
#

but thats why we have heritage speaker to make it less so

potent lava
#

dialects play a big role

naive charm
#

If I learned a languages since 2 years old, am I a native? What about 5, 8, 10?
Where is the cutoff point

left jolt
#

yes

#

usually under around 11

#

if u actually speak on the level of a native, that is. if not you are heritage speaker if your parents speak it to you

naive charm
#

Usually? And will there be a big reason between a 10 and 12 year old when they started?

left jolt
#

i think its where u learned from passive instead of active learning

#

i learned german from 14 but its all active learning

#

if u learn german from 10 and its passive learning mostly then it makes sense, as in u move to germany to go to school

potent lava
#

that's what we've been saying

#

passive learning or immersion is what it's all about

naive charm
left jolt
#

Nope

naive charm
#

Even though I passively acquire the language there?

left jolt
#

a person who learned to speak the language of the place where they were born as a child rather than learning it as a foreign language

#

thats a foreign language in all the sense

#

you wouldnt passively acquire it

#

you would need a heavy dose of active learning

#

how would u learn the alphabet passively

naive charm
#

I can learn a language passively with every age.

#

Simply out of survival our brain will adapt after some time

left jolt
left jolt
#

You learn some things passively of course, but as an adult the bulk of learning must be active, dedicated learning

left jolt
#

Or anywhere else actually

#

Kids learn the alphabet and the sounds and then later on actually learn it if you understand what I mean

naive charm
# left jolt I can assure you that you cannot

Missionaries did however in the past.
If you go to an unknown tribe and live with them for the rest of your live there is no grammar books and no vocabulary.
But many people did successfully acquire the language due to survival. Out of necessity.

#

If there is no alternative for you, you will adapt and passively acquire

left jolt
#

If you go to a classroom for language teaching is that active or passive learning? Because that would be a similar thing to equate here

#

If thats true why are there immigrants in germany for 20+ years who do not speak german

#

or anywher else

naive charm
left jolt
#

Reading is active

#

listening is usually active but can have passive qualities

potent lava
#

I agree as far as vocabulary goes, a good chunk of it is active learning but all the grammar can be learned passively

left jolt
#

then i listened to music with lyrics and thats how i understood how the cases worked

#

There was the active part of having to read the tables and do exerices

naive charm
# left jolt Reading is active

If you mean active as in actually trying to understand, than babies also learn actively because they also want to understand

potent lava
#

I cannot tell you a single grammar rule in german or english, that shit comes in through my eyes and leaks straight out of my ears without any processing in between

naive charm
#

And reading is just listening through the eye

left jolt
#

Then how come if we throw a baby into a box for 20 years they wouldnt speak a language

left jolt
naive charm
left jolt
#

input = passive

#

output = active

potent lava
#

I'm also dyslexic so words in general are not my medium

naive charm
left jolt
#

Yes

naive charm
#

You are not making sense. Reading is input

left jolt
#

You have to actively get your body to open a book and then force your mind to read the words and then use materials to look up unknown words and then put those unknown words into your brain via flash cards or repetition

#

Getting read to would be passive

#

As children do

#

Part of reading is learning as in input, part of reading is using what you have learned as in output. I should say that @naive charm

#

I get what you mean that some parts of reading is a passive act

potent lava
#

so if I put on a movie in a language that I'm trying to learn and put on subtitles in that language, is that active or passive learning?

left jolt
#

But if you pick up a pick in Georgian and dont speak Georgian

#

..

left jolt
#

If you just listen the whole time and dont do anything else id say passive

#

As children do as kids

naive charm
#

You know that converting sound waves to meaning is listening right?
Reading is converting the visual images to meaning.
How is one passive and one active?

#

Anyways take care gn8!

left jolt
#

gn

potent lava
#

good night

#

anyways, to finish off this discussion, all I was saying originally is that I think it is possible for the average person to get to the same level a native speaker can. How and how fast is entirely dependent on the person. It's just not gonna happen over night. It's years of dedication and mostly immersion (or passive learning) imo

That is a bit of a complicated topic, I think. Geographically, Turkey is transcontinental, with the majority of its land and the capital being in Asia, and over the half of the biggest city being in Europe.
