Being able to type German letters is quite important!
- Schon = already. Schön = beautiful.
- Mutter = mother. Mütter = mothers.
How to? There are several options.
🔸 Use a program like AutoHotkey. Download the program from https://www.autohotkey.com/ and read the pinned message in #resources for instructions on how to set it up. It can be used with any keyboard layout and the hotkeys can be customised.
🔸 US International layout: this is basically just a US keyboard layout with extra characters, so if you're using a US-style keyboard or something similar, the transition is very easy! Everything stays as you know it, except that some of the symbol keys can be used to create the special characters. For example " + a = ä. You can also do RightAlt + s = ß.
To use US International on Windows, look for the Region & Language options and switch your selected keyboard layout to US International.
🔸 If you are on Mac, there are two simple possibilities:
- The accent menu - Pressing and holding a letter key will display multiple variants of the letter, including umlauts, which can then be selected using the number keys.
- Dead keys - Pressing
Option + u, then pressinga,u, oro, respectively, will display the umlaut variant of that letter. You can also pressOption + sto enterß.
See this support article for more information:
https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/enter-characters-with-accent-marks-on-mac-mh27474/mac
See the next page for more alternatives.
Here are the instructions for the simpler methods.
Hey guys, I’m looking for a German textbook for kids. Not like a dinky textbook I’m finding on Amazon. More like Polish Krok Po Kroku junior edition, but German. Any ideas? My daughter is getting beyond what I can safely teach her as I’m also learning Polish lol I need guided instruction, context clues heavy, fully in German.
I used the search up top too. But if I missed something, I’m sorry. Please link it if you don’t mind 😊
Guten Tag alle..please does anyone have slides for german A1-B2 I can use for self study? Please
Hey everyone, I'm looking for a website or an app that has the german word and its translation into english with maybe a phrase so I can memorize it better. Something quick and easy so I can use it as a refresher and to add more vocab of course! Thank you
i assume any bilingual dictionary will work? There is a dictionary app called Linguee that I use. It has an english translation and example sentences. That may be of help to you
Thank you I will give it a try

Yes, we disabled the bot in this channel because people kept misusing it as a #botchannel . We didn't get around to creating a workaround yet since not many resources were being suggested recently anyway.
Oh, okay
I'll add that to my to-do list though.
But feel free to suggest stuff here anyway and I'll just manually search it later when I update the resource list.

Hello guys! I am learning German. I have found a really nice course online but I need a tool/resource for learning new words. Is there any app or something for it?
Duolingo is pretty good for learning new vocabulary. My best advice is to try to learn what the things you see/use in your day to day are called in German
Pretty sure Goethe also has a vocabulary list you “should” learn per level
Has someone recommendations on channels about language learning and productivity in German?
One of my main reasons to procrastinate is watching these kind of channels. I know exactly what they will talk about, which dubious studies they will show and the same groundbreaking method they're using; but whenever a new video is released, I'll certainly be there.
So, I thought: why not watch this content at least in German? For a while, I'm watching Judithe Barthomeuf.
Hey! Does anyone know some German learning apps that could really teach it but not by generally learning a lot of information, more like duolingo (where a person is getting introduced with some words and then gets to practice it) ,but which could really help learning new words and grammar (and not js doing the same stuff all over again as it is in duo)
faq nicos
Nicos Weg is a free online program aimed at helping people learn German. It includes video, audio, text, grammar explanations, notes, vocabulary, and exercises. It also includes very useful cultural and bureaucratic information, such as how to open a bank account, while teaching you the relevant grammar and vocabulary.
It’s fairly popular and well-recommended, but keep in mind that you can’t learn a language with only one resource, even if it’s a good one!
You can find the program here: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/nicos-weg/c-36519789
You can also see various other courses for learners by dw.com here: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/overview/

Moving up to B1 level in German is an exciting milestone. As an intermediate learner, you can handle everyday situations and simple conversations – now it’s time to expand your vocabulary to discuss more abstract or detailed topics. In High-Frequency German Vocabulary for A1 Learners, we introduced essential words for beginners, and our A2...
At B2 level, you’ve outgrown everyday basics. You’re reading articles, watching German media, and engaging in deeper conversations. However, to speak confidently and naturally, you need a wider, more advanced vocabulary that reflects the complexity of real-life topics, such as politics, professional life, ethics, social issues, and global a...

Hallo zusammen!
I listen to them fairly often. At the B1/2 level they are probably good just to have stuff to listen to, but will be very easy to understand. I think it would be worth looking for harder podcasts. I've tried " Verbrechen" which is a truecrime podcast. They are a little too much for my level so it may be more appropriate.
yeah I am looking for an alternative
Another I listen to is "Was Jetzt?" which is a daily news podcast from Die Zeit. If you are into such things I've found some youtube channels that are in German. I've been watching "TheCleric", a bunch of friends playing silly videogames together. They speak German but have english subtitles. Others like Kurzgesagt, which you probably know of, have German versions of their videos.
I think most likely fiction podcasts will be easier than regular talking podcasts since they are usually voice acted to have clear-spoken vocals at a pace that's easy to follow. Maybe that's a good next step.

I am looking for a list of easy novels or short stories to read, ranked by reading difficulty. I have read the "Dino Lernt Deutsch" series, and several graded readers from Hueber. I joined Natively that is meant to help with this, but it is mostly gearted toward Japanese. My German level is A2+ or B1--. It would be nice to have a list somewhere that German learners could rank the difficulty of books that they have read.

hey if anyone have some good easy to read german books pds then please share them, I would really appreciate that :]
I found this video today that explains how we should be learning. It's well worth the 15 minutes of watch time
What if you could learn any language faster than you ever thought possible—without memorizing vocabulary lists, grinding through grammar drills, or drowning in textbooks? This video breaks down a powerful 15-minute learning method inspired by the legendary physicist Richard Feynman, whose approach to understanding complex ideas turns out to be...

Does anyone have a pdf for verb conjugation?
faq present tense
Präsens (Present Tense)
When you use a verb in a sentence (or clause), you have to conjugate it (change the form) to match the subject of the sentence (or clause).
For example, in English, we write I eat but he/she eats. The verb has a different ending! The concept is the same in German, except German has more endings.
The first thing you need to know in order to conjugate verbs is: which ending fits which subject? Here is a simple verb “trinken” (to drink) as an example:
trinken
ich trinke
du trinkst
er/sie/es trinkt
wir trinken
ihr trinkt
sie trinken / Sie trinken
(Note: the conjugation for sie (they) and Sie (formal you) is always the same)
Vowel/Stem Changes
There are a few variations and exceptions, but the most important is vowel changes (also called stem changes). Some verbs get a vowel change, which only affects the du and er/sie/es forms of the verb. (However, modal verbs and wissen have their own special pattern, which also has a vowel change in the ich form.)
Example: ich schlafe, du schläfst
Other Changes
There are various other differences but I can’t describe them all here, so please read these websites or use Google to find more information: https://www.vistawide.com/german/grammar/german_verbs_present_tense.htm
https://www.thoughtco.com/german-present-tense-verbs-4074838

It's not a pdf but maybe this helps?

Top free resources for grammar?
Hey everyone. I recently got the book The Everything Learning German Book as was wondering if anyone here had any experiences (positive or negative) with it and/or if it seemed like a good start point?
A lot of textbooks are designed for people in a classroom, having partner activities etc. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a textbook designed for the solo learner?
Anyone with some goethe practise exams? They would really help.
I have just gotten that, gonna try it today and tomorrow to see if its for me.

Anybody know any good podcasts in colloquial swiss german? Usually when you try and search stuff up you find stuff that's specifically about swiss german, which is interesting, but I'm wanting stuff that's about anything (could be politics, literature, cooking, anything) but is made by swiss germans just speaking normally and comfortably in Swiss german. Any recommendations?
The thing is you have many swiss german.. and its a dialect. So do you a particular region of Swiss in mind for the Swiss German? Zurich german, walis, berne?
i've mostly been finding Zurich so far, and i think I'd rather have that

In an effort to prevent silly talk like this hiding the pretty resource list, it's now moved to a separate Google doc, maintained by me, under a fake adress because yay privacy, that you can find in the channel topic.
If you have something that you want added to that list, post it here, and I'll add it to there under the appropriate category. That way the entire thing is more accessible and safe from any future channel deletions.
Still, I would like to ask you all to keep silly smalltalk to #general. ❤

A little more than 100 years ago on June 18th, 1901 a new spelling reform was decided and converted in Germany and imediately introduced in the new school year. When again in 1998 a new spelling reform became effective, there were many protests and the Germans get used the new rules only gradually.

i have too many words to write into this word document :c
I prefer a #shamefull_self_advertisment
Sehr danke @carmine canopy
ehhh... you know that word has tables right ?
also
found a mistake
it's der Frieden not das Frieden
@carmine canopy
lol the first word
yes but not finished at all ;-,
@carmine canopy schrecken is rarely used. Use erschrecken instead
Ok
I also noticed that you tend to use indefinite articles for the english translation even though the german word uses a definite article (e.g "der Chef" -> "a boss")
Nonetheless, great work! @carmine canopy
Well yes
It's easier to use der die das
To show the gender
yes
😂
rofl
"Verlibtheit" -> Verliebtheit
that vid is so funny
yes
@carmine canopy I can continue to point out mistakes/typos if you'd like me to
xd
You can correct them and send them back? XD
ok just write them 😄
I can correct them on the weekend if you want
if u want you can write examples for the verbs 😂 too much work
:)
lol bitte
Typos like "oponent"
instead of opponent
Would you mind explaining why some words are bold @carmine canopy
because they r harder to remember or more important lol
or both
i mean both
Ah okay
"Nachrichtensendug" -> "Nachrichtensendung"
what is that
news
Although "newscast/news broadcast" fits better
I guess you meant "die Nachrichten" -> the news
in den Nachrichten?
in den Schlagzeilen?
Please elaborate
in den Nachrichten sehen?
"Momentan schaue ich die Nachrichten (im Fernsehen)"
Yours works too
"Ich konnte es gestern in den Nachrichten sehen"
i mean
ich habe es in den Nachrichten gesehen
Ja
in den Nachrichten lesen
*in der Zeitung lesen
😄
@carmine canopy "schrecklich" can also be an adjective
yes
and also why are some adverbs classified as adjectives?
because they can be used for both purposes
Either as an adjective or adverb
i was looking them up on dict
and all adv were classified as adj only
"Ich bin schrecklich müde" or as adjective: "Ich habe einen schrecklichen Hunger"
yes
were they classified as "Adj" or "adj"
if they were classifed as "adj", that usually indicates that said adverb can be used as an adjective even though it doesnt classify as one
Why do you keep scaring me? - schrecken?
You scared me - erschrecken?
just scratch "schrecken" completely. We only use it with other prepositions like "auf". E.g " ich wurde aufgeschreckt"
really?
1st sentence would be "Warum erschreckst du mich andauernd"
2nd "Du hast mich erschreckt"
yeah
Using "erschrecken" correctly is incredibly difficult.
I can link you to a german article which explains the problem
why is sich erschrecken Umg
What exactly do you mean?
what is then standard german
A "standard" form of this verb does not exist
It's either transitive/non-transitive or reflexive
(On a side note: it doesnt really matter if you use the transitive or non transitive form because most native speakers wont notice it anyway)
senk ju

Well any list you find is fine, if you absolutely must use a list.

I'll check but I think that one is already in there.

Or you could even include youtube playlists of your favorite artists, so we can make a music section too, preferrably also specifying the genre, since I'm terrible at telling those apart. Recently I've posted a german cheat sheet for beginners on r/german. For those of you who haven't checked it out yet, here it is. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B6X81LRBsrt6Uk9PRjlGb2hxcTQ
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCC2zT8n2jWaVBqPuPROTavQ/videos
I like this person's vlog. He speaks in simple sentences and is pretty easy to understand. (plus, the videos are all about whatever they're doing that day; shopping, going to the beach, etc. So even if there are words I don't know, it's easy to deduce)
Whoops. I've been a bit dead lately, but I'll take a look and add these soon.

Also someonr on Reddit recommended the point and click German adventure game Deponia. I bought it for my iPad and have been enjoying playing it. Lots of dialogue but even if you don't understand it all its still fun to play.
Ugh. That thing. It's so cheesy. Certainly good for learning, but I had trouble getting past the first few episodes.
There's another one like it where an Auslander starts working at a TV studio.
I think cute is a better word

Oh I thought we were talking about Depnoia, I'm an idiot
Wie bitte?
Haha I guess Im a cheeseball bc I enjoy the Extra series. Deutsch plus I found a bit boring but I should watch more episodes. @junior pond so you have played Deponia? Any other game recommendations?
I didn't play all of them because I'm not actually to keen on point & click adventures but a friend recommended them to me and they were really cheap during a sale some time ago
(I haven't used this much yet)

Have given it a look and it looks pretty good, might go through it slowly over next few weeks. Thanks @granite shell

So @verbal matrix, why did I just watch Conan O'Brien get spanked...
Although some features of German grammar, such as the formation of some of the verb forms, resemble those of English, German grammar differs from that of English in that it has, among other things, cases and gender in nouns and a strict verb-second word order in main clauses.
German has retained many of the grammatical distinctions that other Germanic languages have lost in whole or in part. There are three genders and four cases, and verbs are conjugated for person and number. Accordingly, German has more ...
The box on the right has some useful pages. I find the table under "Articles" helpful for der/das/die/den/dem...

<@&229594762762649601> while helping someone with some german, I found this list http://www.nthuleen.com/teach/misc/colloquial.html
Worksheet used in teaching German to undergraduates.
figured it would be nice if someone is tryingto practice talking casually
nice find!
Yes! I can finally tell all my enemies that they können mich mal. 😄
Du kannst mich mal kreuzweise
Better? 😛
I would like to mention that these SHOULDN'T be used when writing any form of formal essay
really nice find
can you put it in the google docs resources
because I have that bookmarked
I've never heard "gut wattiert"
^^^
Lol
don't look at me, I just posted :3
Just mentioning it 😄 not blaming you for anything
I have such an awesome idea
in Irish ulc means disgusting or terrible
reminded me of that
and it's the opposite
Isn't ulkig more like strange (looking)?
Ulkig for me is more like funny / weird
Ah, right
Yeah good idea to call a woman Nutte or Schlampe 😃 good synonym, they Love being called that
^
"Frauenzimmer" - last time I checked we had 2016
xD
it's shorter than many other things
sure, but still long
Übergewichtig has more syllables than Walross
I want my insults to be short and clear
that's the opposite of my school of thought
the more aulic and articulated the better
why would I bother making up a long insult when the fuck won't understand anyway?
because (s)he not being able to understand it is an insult in itself
wher's the fun in that? xD
Isn't Luder for women lol
Yes, eigentlich schon
like "you're the following list of things, half of which you're not even educated enough to understand"
bonus points if it's achieved with the victim's native language while you're not a native
I would rather laugh into someone face while just simply saying to him that he's a fuck
might be just me tho
yeah but that doesn't leave a mark, does it? It won't be slowly eating them from inside while their subconscious reflects on them actually being stupider than the person that insulted them
but really I just have fun making things up, I don't do it for any other reason
eh, I'm not that kind of person, I "live for the moment" as in, I don't care what was or what will be
I just care for how things are right now
Are there history stuff in German? Like easy af podcasts or something
Or legended video chanels in youtube
slow german does stuff on culture and history sometimes
also for the unaware, goethe institut has a spotify. they have playlists of various german music.
they don't have hip hop but Sido's station is good for that if you're interested
a german strategy let's player that talks in a very clear "high German" . If it's something you fancy, take a look. @everyone
@half maple I would actually say the player talks a little Bavarian or Alemannic. Even setting aside pronunciation, note for instance his use of wo in Relativsätze, which is not considered Hochdeutsch afaik:
“Das ist Spellforce, eins der Projekte, wo ich einen ungeheueren Respekt für hab”
[Hochdeutsch: Das ist Spellforce, eins der Projekte, für die ich einen ungeheueren Respekt hab]
“Die Leute, wo es kennen… / Die Leute, wo es nicht kennen…”
[Hochdeutsch: Die Leute, die es kennen… / Die Leute, die es nicht kennen…]
Of course, if you’re interested in the contents of the video, there’s plenty German to learn from speakers of all sorts, and it can be good for learners to get exposure to dialectal features within the context of near-Hochdeutsch.
yea, I worded my sentence wrong
it's not really really "Hochdeutsch" but it's understandable and it can be good practice to talk in a way everyone would understand
für das*
or wofür
and he's just cutting it up
still probably considered non-standard
I do that too though
not the "Die Leute, wo..."part though
Hallo! Can anyone recommend me an online German radio station that's not a music station; I found radioSAW but almost all of their channels play nothing but music. But, I wanted a radio station where a lot of talking (in german) happens. Danke!
There's a neat tool in our google doc called radio garden. Maybe you can find a good radio station there. Unfortunately I'm not the most avid radio listener 😦 Depending on your skill level you may as well listen to Domian on Youtube maybe? 😃
Do you happen to be from NRW, @rancid mountain? I always assumed splitting dafür is a Rhineland thing.
@nimble flame Im at most A2. I will give Domain a try. Will check the list too. Didn't know about it! Danke schön!
You can also try this http://www.deutschland.fm/
@broken berry I'm from NRW, around Bielefeld!
anyone who is bored by High German can try to understand this ^
Ich hab' eine Radio gefunden, die spielt guten Underground Sounds ab, es heißt "FluxFM" und ihr könnt es hier ausprobieren: https://www.fluxfm.de/radio-livestream/
Ooh danke^^
Nichts zu danken :)

Some rules to tell word gender
https://deutsch.lingolia.com/en/grammar/nouns-and-articles/gender
Does anyone know of any good apps/podcasts/audio books that would help me increase my vocabulary, grammar, and understanding of conjugations?
Explanation of German adjective endings and declination.
I don't know if this has been posted before but I think it's a really useful source for adjective declensions. It really helped me.
Wusste nicht, dass reich ein Gemütszustand ist
¯_(ツ)_/¯
ich habe es dir gesagt
LOL
I'm pasting a ruleset I made here, so people can use it. I came up with it last year. It helps determine the correct place to put 'nicht' in a sentence. It doesn't always work; there are snag cases. However, it works much better than any of the rules I found online. All of those had too many exceptions, too many rules, and didn't perform as well as mine seems to.
Nicht Ruleset: helps 😀 you determine where to put 'nicht' in a sentence.
I wrote some code that compiled thousands of sentences in German that contained 'nicht'. I then build a tree of rules that encapculated as many of those sentences as possible with the least number of steps. Hopefully it helps some of you.
What are long objects and short objects?
its written right on there :p
lol
Right. Ignore me, I'm dumb. I stopped at Line 3.
Would have liked an asterisk for an accompanying note.
Hands @broken berry an *
If it were a full page of text, I woud have included an asterisk. given that's it's about 10 lines long, I figure most people can figure it out 😛
you overastimated Anya's attention span
Sorry.
It's cool 😃
Can I upload .pdf here?
yup
Ok. So I'm going to upload my adjective rules table. I find it useful, but that's because I made it. It might seem like a clusterfuck to you guys. But it might help.
Adjective rules table.
@sleek holly Add the pdf please
Just did, didn't I?
We have a curated list of resources
I ping'd an admin
to add your pdf
Oh cool. Thanks.
👍
Driving home, will do when I get there. But thanks for sharing. ❤
np. Hope it's of some use. It made memorising the rules of German adjectives waaay easier for me.
❤Im driving along with Arrem
@carmine canopy your pdf should be added now 👌
Sure if you want to share it.
Added. Sorry it took me so long, had a phonecall with my parents haha.
B n, as n approaches infinity.
I know that, but what's the function?
A function that returns the letter B suffixed by the number n, indicating one's level of German haha.
lol
But wait....maybe B∞ is C1.
like 0.999... = 1 😃
was thinking the same thing
but perhaps it's just ever so slightly not enough to be C1
There are ongoing discussions about that, but I still don't feel nearly confident enough to call myself C1 for now.
I think that's a hilarious way to express that. Good job lol
Btw, @carmine canopy has fallen into the trap of thinking there's an infinitesimal gap 😛
Good job @nimble flame :D
He gave me that name to satisfy my math fetishes because he's a nice person.
I know fuck all about maths so... x)
Let's test that out :P
Hey @carmine canopy, is this true: 0.9999.... = 1 ?
mumbles something about the flaws of the decimal system
probably? Otherwise some simple arithmetics would make little sense, like (10/3)*3=10
It's not a flaw. It's just that people underestimate the meaning of the '...'.
I'm in an ugly limbo where I seem to like maths as a concept but I'm too inept to actually be able to expand my knowledge past occasional, wild notions
Did that cunt just?
The bot's whitelist system broke and it censored me.
rips off three shirts
What I said was that it arises from the fact that 0.3333... is not representable in a nice non-repeating way.
Brilliant.
how could that statement possibly contain anything the bot would censor?
An absurdly large number of 3's.
now now, not a very mathematiciany thing to do, inefficiently repeating the same number where you could have used some kind of notation
yep!
We don't have no fractions where I come from.
lol
I'd get back into math if it didn't feel like I was climbing a very tall ladder to nowhere.
which is exactly what maths is
mathssssss
every now and then you reach a height where some form of applied mathematics is relevant
my senses perceived an American mocking British spelling :0
Shhhh. Math is love. When it's being nice and understandable.
It's fun when you're in the ladder and you look back and think "I can help other people on the ladder, and I can also feel superior to those who don't even bother to climb the ladder. Look at those sheep. Frickin' idiots.", but then you look up the ladder and it's like "the further up I go, the less people there are to talk to who know what I'm talking about, and I'm lonely and this is dull and I'm cold."
~on the ladder.
It's nice when you have the free time to actually climb the ladder on your own instead of watching some guy climb higher and higher every day without knowing how the hell he does it. Though it's a lovely feeling when you actually get the time to climb after a while, and climbing makes perfect sense and you dooo it, yaaaaaay. I may be taking this too far. 😂
and also when you look below you, the people who aren't even trying to climb are somehow still not very far from you despite how much you climbed
Nah they are. They're all ground-loving plebs.
lol
I found myself climbing up a greasy part of the ladder. I'd work my ass off climbing, lose interest, go explore something else, slide down, come back, repeat.
Let's explore PDEs! Oh look a shiny thing over there! come back Let's explore PDEs!
someone turned resources into a math meme playground... nice one 😄
I blame Arrem, obviously
It's math memes thouuuugh. And that's the best kind there iiiiiiis. ❤
too much science
Looool.
I think the world would be a better place if everybody tried to learn a foreign language. This is my attempt to show that anyone can do it, and that it's the…
^Really cool dude
Really big fan of the dict.cc Chrome extension. Highlight words for a small window showing top dictionary entries for the word/phrase
There's similar things for Firefox, and I think there's equivalents for Leo
huh, neat
Whoa I need that
@worn charm My one regret from switching to the Discord client...
Ich sehe Arte häufig, es ist ein guter Kanal für Nachrichten und Kultur aus Deutschland und Frankreich
Aber es gibt kein Untertitleln auf Französich für die Videos auf Deutsch :/
Do you think there is a way to get books with German and English/French text side by side? It would really help me practice reading German, since checking every few words can become daunting
You could go for English books with translations, and then dock the windows next to each other. Note that translations aren't always 1:1 though, and looking up words to really understand their meaning is probably the most beneficial variant, IMO.
See if this helps: http://paralleltext.io/
The OFAJ/DFJW had some books like that when I was in high school

Hey that's what I'm kinda looking for, awesome @broken berry, thanks!
Parallel Text seems nice indeed
No problem! The menu on the top-left lets you choose split-view. Prety nifty, I found.
Mobile only has TTS but I kinda needed that too
Oh, didn’t know it had TTS at all. Haven’t been to the site in a long time.
Wow, that's excellent!
I also had a look at Parallel Text, but the translations are way off
It's like watching a movie where the subtitles say the same thing in a different way. Not very helpful if you want to grasp syntax patterns.
The paragraphs are not always lined up, either
Well most translations are like that. Making it sound good is a higher priority than making it structurally match with the original.
That's why legal translations are usually the most faithful
I've found a few on Amazon

There is also a browser plug-in called ReadLang, which lets you look up words on spot.
Danke, ich werde ReadLang versuchen!
there's always google translate tool which works the same
you highlight stuff and it translates
though its functionality isn't like dict.cc/readlang. I use it mostly for grammar proofing / too lazy to read deutsch

@carmine canopy I use forvo.com to look up pronunciation from natives
Thanks, really helpful

Hello! This is a useful easy to use grammar for german learners 😃 It's easy to scroll, I found the conjugation of the verbs in german with ease. I hope that it can help you as well 😃
Thanks 👍
A good dictionary, with over 800,000 entries: https://pda.leo.org
I have finished the doulingo tree, and I am now A2, does anyone have resources that etend me from that point?
@carmine canopy https://readlang.com lets you read and translate, and words you translate will be made into flashcards
Readlang is kind of bad with German though, because it treats the prefixes in verbs like ankommen as separate words, from when I last used it at least.
Yeah, so you'll have to translate seperable words with something like http://dict.cc and manually edit them
But it's not that bad
Yeah
That;s quite useful @fervent oxide , thanks man
No problem
Does anyone have a good like adjective list? I have one for describing people but
I want a really advanced ajdective list for describing things like music and plays
Art in general there we go that's a good word. If anyone could point me to a resource with advanced art/music/film adjectives I'd appreciate it
Complete list of adjectives:

They're not translated though, so if you're unsure about the meaning, feel free to ask ^^
That's quite a lot 😂 thank you I bookmarked the link though for my folders
do you know any genre/theme-specific lists (about art ETC)
I'll take a look

Not sure if this has been posted earlier, but here's a mini telenovella series for B1-B2 levels - http://www.dw.com/de/folge-1-die-ankunft/l-17395817
It also comes with subtitles, a glossary, and some tests and exercises.

The whole thing is hilarious and might seem very silly, but it's a good start to get accustomed to the language and get comfortable watching shows in German! 😃
Idk if this has already been mentioned here, but the daad had come out with a new app called verstehen sie Deutsch. @dry walrus Songs would be around there (i mean depending on the song obv) 😉 and some audio books of "not so complicated novels" would be.
ugh there's some site, i can't recall the exact name of it, but it's part of the goethe institut website resources and it has resources on there based on level
but i really can't remember the name right now
oh here it is; https://www.goethe.de/prj/dfd/en/home.cfm
Hi! So I'm trying to find good ways to learn German and I'm wondering if Duoling is a valid way to do this. I'm always curious about the accuracy of Duolingo's courses. From I've gathered It's alright but it's not very good for learning to pronounce words. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Or if anyone knows any good sites or books for beginners that would be wonderful too
@tranquil thunder duolingo is generally bad for that. You should search for a kind of course that guides you step by step through grammar; the good ones also start by teaching you pronunciation and german orthography. There could be some good links if you look into the resource list (pinned link, or at the top of the page)
@carmine canopy Thanks for your help.
thanks
I have just discovered a great website online, it is really awesome!!!
it is
http://www.projectlowell.com
it is for studying vocabulary of six languages including German
check it out!
The resource list has been updated. Thanks to everyone for submitting new learning materials! <3
As a reminder, you can find the curated resource list here https://goo.gl/M906K8, so you don't have to scroll through an entire channel whenever you're looking for something.

A game for learning random vocabulary with pictures (they also have several other languages):

I can get most of these from parts of the word but its cool
On the other hand I can't stop playing
they have a few variations of the game if you click on the button in the upper left corner
<@&221738850748334080> the link to "Huebers Großes Übungsbuch (A2 - C1)" under "Exercises and practice material" is dead. I found a pdf of it here: https://ia800206.us.archive.org/21/items/GrossesUbungsbuchDeutschGrammatik/Großes Übungsbuch Deutsch - Grammatik.pdf
would you mind checking if it works for you now? 😃
yes, it works 😃
👍
Great resource, thanks : )
@half maple is there no way to download that pdf? It says download is not possible for that file. Gieb mirror please
Does anyone have some app/good mobile sites to practice A2/B1 german on iphone? I have a long train commute each day and right now I do duolingo/memrise but need something a little more involved.
I was researching and saw someone mention the "Dino lernt Deutsch" series for beginning reading
yeah this series is quite good for beginners esp, it's sort of a graded-reading (the first one is very easy and it gradually gets a little more complex) I've read all of the ones out now and found them to be great, though not all that entertaining
I think the krimis made by the same author are better as far as entertainment value, though they are more geared towards intermediate level learners
Do you know of any other good beginner reading?
I really liked the "cultural graded readers" from "american book company," because they were doable for me when I was a noob, and also because they're everywhere on ebay for whatever reason
particularly the beethoven one I found interesting, though it's probably better to start with the first one in the series. I forget what it is
I'll look them up
if you get kindle unlimited, there are also a ton of parallel text books which are helpful, but I find they make me lazy so I can't give a good recommendation on them. that's personal preference though, give them a shot. If you can find "Momo" that's a very good natively German children's book that isn't completely boring
and
"The Little Prince" is one of the better children's books as well imo. I'm not sure how accessible it is for A-Level, but definitely something I recommend for at some point 😃
I'll look into it
viel glueck
danke
Does anyone have a good anki deck they'd recommend?
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/653061995 (4000 German words with audio)
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/994693053 (4000 German words without audio)
Found this on reddit today
Thanks 😄 The one I have only has 500 so it's quite limited
@hallow haven can you share it?
I think it's this one but it seems it's been updated since I got it about 7 months ago
wtf it's $24.99 for the anki ios app
Uhh really?
Is that AnkiPro (if such a thing exists) or the normal Anki
It's free on Android
There's another that's free from a different company
The one in image is the one that's linked on ankiweb
the app 'AnkiApp' is free and let me download that 4000 word one
the desktop version is free. only the ios version is not free
Think of it this way: that's only 2.0842368640533778148457047539616 packets of 10 twinkies from Walmart
they cost 12 dollars?
You can use a free one on the website.
that is not justified
it's 35$ on the canadian app store :/
I used to use it on my laptop but... I'm lazy. I'll start using it again soon
Gonna be honest though guys the mobile version (android at least) is not so great, desktop is much better.
Are allowed to link to not so legal resources or no : )
we are sharing pdf files already so i don't think it will make a big difference ^^

It's a book (written in German soz A1 people) about all grammatically terms like Ablaut, Absentiv, flektieren, freier Dativ etc. etc. and it explains what they are, usually gives an english translation, gives examples in German and yeah I mean I only really use it if I'm trying to find out something difficult (like Absentiv) and i like to read through it every so often out of pure interest so go crazy 🤷🏼
If you can also somehow find a way to my profile with that link there's a preposition book on there as well for some reason which i dont remmeber uploading but go wild.
neato
thx im a nerd so i like it
nemoses, best not to upload kasalla onto hier and confuse the newbies 😛
shit, right ^^
THE VIRUS IS SPREADING MUAHAHAHAHA
o.O
A book i saw mentioned on r/german. Really simple grammar with exercises. No knowledge required to start. It lacks the really formal academic definitions and focuses more on explaining with examples and everyday language https://www.google.ba/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.prsformusicfoundation.com/docs/408/Schenke%2520-%2520Seago%2520-%2520Basic%2520German.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwiNnqiovenSAhVkG5oKHZnPDagQFgglMAA&usg=AFQjCNFPGKh8Nw6mTgOivKu1SRxXxe_HPw
that's a lot of stuff
anyone know a good resource for...idk. level 0 listening practice?
there is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfIIYxhbg84&list=PLsoAwWtvF3L0rEBLC33J2jIlNjwfsXg88
The playlist contains videos for multiple levels, the absolute beginner ones have blue thumbnail
thanks!
I also require a German movie, but I guess I'll just order it online.
Which movie? If it's filmed in german, the chance of finding it rises significantly
I can upload Michael Thomas and Pimsleur German audio courses. Would anyone be interested?
Also German for Reading pdf.
Sure, why not @crisp hamlet ?
@vivid meteor Check out Slow German on YouTube
German for Reading: https://mega.nz/#!RtNCxYiZ
@carmine canopy ob is for boolean questions where the answer is either one way or the other, just like english "whether"
wenn is for all other cases
That's what I thought
wann is for time and it's a different thing entirely
I was getting confused as Cuth was saying "wenn" = when
falls is "in the event that/of"
which I thought wann = when, and wenn = if
Well, both, really.
XD verwirrt
Wann is the temporal when, while wenn is the conditional one (for present and future).
Wann is basically always a question. ;)
Oh also, #questions for questions please. ❤
oh i tagged him here by mistake, I misclicked the channel. My fault
Bad Brzkrzkrkzrzk. Banned.
What textbooks do you guys refer to learn German? I found this list on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/German/wiki/textbooks but there are a lot of them. Can anyone suggest one which you know is good?
thanks m8!
btw there's more stuff if you look at the curated list pinned in this channel

I'm so sad that people tend to overlook the topic. 😦
sorry, ban me too
i don't think there's any way to put it more into the user's face than this tho, unless you're committed enough to copypast an emoji-filled link every time a conversation here ends
Isn't it dumb that you have to scroll up all the way just to find something you might like? Well fortunately for you, you don't! We have a nicely sorted list that you can check out! ❤
https://bit.ly/gladresources
It has its perks tho. Not knowing about the resource list is a nice sign that you didn't bother going through #282831147942281216, for example.
The "Comics, mangas and graphic novels cbr" link is broken.
There are lots of free audiobooks, but you can only listen to them on the site and the site itself is in russian
Does anyone know I can find some relatively low-level vocabulary/writing exercises, challenges, etc?
you know clozemaster, yeah?
I'll look into it
Any course based websites like doulingo? I'd love a training program that starts from the basics, not just something that teachs me words and phrases without saying why you used der instead of die etc.
hey @north sleet, did you check out https://www.reddit.com/r/German/wiki/faq ?
I think Q2 would answer your question.
will do, thanks
@unkempt sinew i think yesterday or the day before in vc you named some website and you said it was better than lingvist, what was it again?
is there listening comprehension too?
I think that Lingvist in of itself is a bit better though because it also has listening and reading comprehension exercises
to an amount yes
ah nah, they don't it seems
Lingvist has that though
aw ok. When i tried lingvist a while ago there wasn't very much
do you or anyone know a site that has speaking exercises too? And isn't duolingo?
yeah, it is still being developed
fair enough. Danki
listening exercises are really hard to come by
i would guess the easy language channel on youtube is the closest thing to listening exercises that i can think of
it is a bit annoying though that you cannot watch the videos without subtitles
yeah
@carmine canopy i just looked through the resource list and maybe this is something:
http://www.dw.com/en/learn-german/level-b2/s-13230
Mit dem Einstufungstest die richtige Niveaustufe finden, mit dem Kursfinder den passenden Deutschkurs ermitteln.
well mostly i just listen to tagesschau or dw recordings
ah ok
Texte und Podcasts über Deutschland - für fortgeschrittene Lerner (ab Level B1). Verbessert Euer Hörverständnis - learn German!
i was listening to the easy german a while back
and realized that if i read the subtitles i didn't actively understand the german
if i just wasn't looking there i could understand what they was saying
but when i focused on the english text my brain filtered out the words
They should make subs optional
Or at least only display German ones and add optional English ones
Mandatory German and English subs = no bueno
yeah and i can't imagine submitting the subs to youtube would be more work than hardsubbing
i can kind of understand them in that they think it is important that several subtitles are displayed at once, but it would be really great if they could just upload a subtitle-free version of the video
I try watching their videos sometimes, but I can’t actually watch the video itself because my eyes will drift down to the subs and I don’t want to just read the subs, because listening is still something I’m a bit shit with
@sleek holly Noticed you don't have vocabulix.com in the doc, it's a pretty useful one for conjugating verbs
Thanks! Was actually gonna go to bed now, so I'll add it in the morning. 😄
I use reverso for looking up conjugation. http://conjugator.reverso.net/conjugation-german.html
I often close my eyes when watching easy german
It's a stupid solution to the problem
Does anyone have good German streaming sites? (I have a vpn, so that won’t be an issue)
the most famous is probably burningseries, but it's gotten so bloated with advertisements lately that I wouldn't really recommend it anymore. But if you have a Adblock and don't mind it, that's probably the site to go.
danke 😃
https://www.memrise.com/user/Baas/courses/teaching/ This guy has a bunch of Memrise courses on various German dialects for English, so if that’s something that interests you then go ahead 😄 (he also has a lot of other languages and stuff)
what german/english dictionaries do you guys recommend?
i use dict.cc and dict.leo.org
the second one has useful conjugation and declension tables
otherwise you can use conjugator.reverso.net and some other site like lingolia for declension tables
thanks pals
Repost from @daring wadi's introduction since we like to keep #introductions clean: I'm working on this atm http://deutschdrang.com/dir/beginner-level-worksheets
https://www.amazon.com/Barrons-1001-Pitfalls-German-Third/dp/0812096525
I have this book from the library atm and it's really great, I mainly use it so i can write down the pitfalls and watch out for easy traps to fall into, but i've been reading throguh the whole book and it's actually really good grammar-wise for the intermediate learner.
Nowhere near Hammer's but i think it's a good stepping stone from a beginner's grammar book > hammer
Unfortunately i and about 4 others looked around and we cant find a pdf at ALL so ur gnna have to buy it, but its only £8 / $9
i just bought this book @carmine canopy http://www.ebay.com/itm/352011045347?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

not as good as mine soz
oh ive seen that around actually
Fisa recommended it to me
Should be a good one for beginner's then, i dont know of any beginner's ones at all really 😂
@carmine canopy Is it like a workbook with exercises or more like a guide?
Oh
lingvist sucks
memrise and duolingo are good
specially for getting picking up vocab..and then probably music and movies in german along with it, would be the ideal thing.
also speaking with natives
Duo's emphasis on translation can be a weak point, but it isn't bad for starting out.
does anyone have a nice graphical cheat sheet for verb-order rules?
V2 specially refers to the verb being the second constituent in the sentence
@carmine canopy I'm new here and I just read your comment regarding Hammer's book, are you looking for it? I have the 5th edition in PDF
Yup.
it is in the resource list as well
nvm, I missunderstood, you were probably talking about Barron's 1001 pitfalls
