# weak frost Yeah the video

I would say don't stress too much about it. It takes a while to train listening skills. But maybe listen to the videos multiple times to help train your skills. Spend a bit more of your study time on listening.

#

If you understand all the rest of what's going on, you're doing well already.

#

Maybe go back and watch the videos again from the start too. I think that could also help.

Hey there, guys. I'd like to ask for help regarding some practice tests. I'm seating my C2 exams (Goethe GDS) in November and I'm trying to get my hands on as many mock tests as possible right now. At the moment, I am working with Endstation, but any other series of books would be welcome in the situation. Do you have any other suggestions in mind that could help? Thank you. 🙏

you should focus on that. understanding the big picture instead of every little word
maybe put subs on for the first watch and try to understand the meaning of the conversation with the visual and other context clues
and for the second watch look up specific words you dont know, which are anyway usually shown at the end of the lesson

it is completely normal to not understand every single word btw

How to get started

The simplest way to learn German is to find topics you don’t understand yet and search for explanations of them. This list provides you with a guide for which topics to learn if you are completely new to German. Type the topic into Google (or YouTube) and start learning!

Introduction

1: Alphabet (especially ä, ü, ö and ß)
2: Basic greetings (hello, goodbye, etc.)

Part 1 - Simple Sentence

1: Noun gender & plurals
2: Nominative case (What are cases?)
3: Nominative pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.)
4: Verbs in present tense
5: Definite/indefinite articles
6: Accusative case (for nouns)
7: Accusative pronouns
8: Word order of simple sentences
9: How to ask questions

See Part 2 on the next page.

Tips
  • Always learn the gender of a noun when you learn a new noun
  • Learn to use a translation dictionary (e.g. dict.cc, leo.org)
  • Use >faq resources to see our list of German learning resources
  • For listening and pronunciation practice, try watching movies or videos (incl. YouTube)
  • You can listen to pronunciation for words on websites like dict.cc, forvo.com, and others
  • Practice writing sentences every day (and asking people to correct them)
  • Ask as many questions as possible
  • Don’t be scared to make mistakes!!!! If you don’t let yourself make mistakes, you will never be able to learn German

How to get started - Part 2

Please make sure to read Part 1 before starting Part 2!

Part 2 – Beyond a Simple Sentence

1: Conjunctions (coordinating and subordinating)
2: Subordinate clause word order
3: Dative case
4: Dative verbs
5: Verbs with two objects (e.g. geben)
6: Prepositions (accusative, dative, and two-way)
7: Spoken past tense (Perfekt)
8: Written past tense (Präteritum)
9: Genitive case
10: Relative clauses
11: Adjective declension

Tips
  • Make sure to practice writing and reading simple texts
  • Some of these concepts are confusing to start with, so it’s a good idea to ask for help in #questions when you’re unsure
  • You should use a declension chart to help with declension to start with, because you won’t be able to memorize it straight away
  • After you feel confident with creating sentences, you can start learning the adjective declension properly by using the command >faq adjective declension and reading the guide provided

^ I'm submitting the two anki decks I've been using as a suggestion. I'm halfway through the migaku one and 1/4rd of the way through the one with cloze-input, and while there's some minor annoyances overall the decks are well put together. The one with mined sentences has varied audio with decent quality and at normal speeds. It often has extra example sentences that show other uses of the words. Combined with the extension that colors gendered words and presents the cards nicely and the entire package ends up useful.

I have a resource suggestion that helped improve my vocabulary and grammar. It's an app called Clozemaster. It gives sentences with a word missing and prompts you to fill it in. This helps learn words in context of how they are used. After answering a sentence, you have the options to look up the definitions of each word , read an explanation of how the sentence works, and add the sentence to a favorites list.

They have levels 1-5 with 30 lesson in each level i believe. They start with an introduction leading into just listening wich leads into multiple choice, choose the right picture for each word and then type what you hear. they have flashcards avilble too! Currently you can get lessons 1-5 for around 400 dollars for one year!

  1. Pretty sure this isnt a place to just ask for resources, reading the getting started page would have pointed you to the list of resources to pick from
  2. B1 German in three months? Temper your expectations and get ready to not understand a single thing. Speak exclusively in German from now on, look up words you want to learn, and immerse yourself in conversation with other german speakers. You probably wont reach B1 but itll give you the best chance of understanding.

i recommend you actually don't
xiaoma's method can be more for communicating in short time but not for a solid level such as b1
especially since you need it for work you'll have to get an official certificate which wouldn't be possible w this course
maybe a more solid approach with more time would be more beneficial like nicos weg + anki + speaking every few days if not everyday
basically if you want to go from your current level to B1 in 2 months now it'll take quite a bit of time daily

what do you all think about these kinds of memory aids and the like

misty valve
#

But in German, you have a lot of "compound nouns", meaning nouns that are made by combining multiple words into one word. With these words, the gender is determined by the final word in the compound. For example, "der Schreibtisch" gets the gender from "der Tisch". And those gendered suffixes that you see, like "-heit" and "-chen", work exactly the same way. The gender of "-chen" is neuter and so any word made with this suffix will be neuter.

#

But either way, you're still memorising the gender of der Tisch, you're still memorising the gender of -chen. It's just that you're now aware of the concept of compound nouns and how they reduce the amount you have to memorise.

For reading books in German https://readlang.com is a good option (it unfortunately doesn’t work offline, but you can add it to your Home Screen, it works on Kindle too) you can upload the E-Book to it, there is also a library with e books that you can just access.
It has an in built translator, so you can translate words as you read once you click in them.
Once you translate a word, it is automatically saved, you can then go back and review the words as Flashcards.
The book can also be read aloud if you want that
It also has a really good overview of what your progress is like- how many words you read, and how many you practiced, and also how many words are in the book in total.
(P.s all these features are free, there’s only a limit to how many phrases you can translate, word translations are unlimited)
It also works as a chrome extension- when you read german on other websites you can translate words and they are also saved as flashcards

it is a compromise you have to make in the end, in English you don't really learn THE in a sense of THE book when you learn a word nor would you like A book or AN apple.

Artikles in German are painful to learn but what you're mainly focused on is whether if its masc, feminine, or neutral. It takes a while to get used to but its good afterwards (for me at least).

Though if you do find one that matches your style do tell me so i can add it to mine too.

carmine canopy
# pulsar belfry I’m new at German and only know a few words are there any good free apps that I ...

Here are some free apps to help you get started:

  • Duolingo (good for learning vocabulary and basic sentences.)
  • Busuu (they have a free version, but you have to pay for some premium features)
  • Anki (a flashcard app. You can find pre-made German decks or make your own.)
  • DW Learn German (I think they have an app, I’m not too familiar with the app - but the website is really good and has structured courses. I’d highly suggest looking into Nico’s Weg.)

Apps are a good resource for learning, but I’d definitely recommend pairing them with a more structured course or resource. Most apps focus on vocabulary and basic phrases, but they often don’t go very deep into grammar or sentence structure, which are really important for building a solid foundation.

For those that aren’t aware Michael Schmitz has decided to make the Smarter German courses free for levels A1-B2. This uses the teachable platform and so requires online access to use the courses.

He is accepting donations with some perks but it’s a big change from his previous pricing model so might be worth looking at again. I do note the page mentions that even if you do make a donation access isn’t guaranteed in the long term but hopefully he is able to maintain the free access.

Great that you have spent so much time on LingQ. You should have pretty great vocabulary already just do the words that feels hard in Anki which should be very few and spend a lot of time doing grammar lessons from mygermanteacher or Herr antrim. and practice them in some grammar book like grammatik aktiv or something.

You should spend the first few weeks focusing on grammar spending I would gently recommend around 3 hours since you haven't done much grammar yet and spend the last week or so doing 2-3 model tests everyday. You should be good.

The Basic German and Intermediate German are pretty light on details and they don't present topics in a sensible order, but it's fine to use them.

Hammer's is a great resource, but it's not a textbook or workbook. It's rather a grammar reference, which is kinda like a "dictionary" of grammar, so not that useful unless you want to get into all the little details of grammar, which most people don't. Maybe look into that later when you have more complicated questions that you're having trouble finding answers for.

And I have no idea about the other one.

Guten Abend. Does anyone have recommendations for paid courses that specifically prepare the learner for the A1 Goethe exam? I want to do self-paced study with interactive media, if possible. I have a job offer in a DACH country and would like to achieve my A1 certification in the next month or so. There are so many different resources to choose from and it's hard to see what's worth paying for.

# pearl cradle How good duolingo german course is?

I personally found it unhelpful and impractical because it would just teach random sentences, most of which I wouldn't be able to use in regular sentences, nor do I like it since it is pro AI, but that's just my opinion

icy mist
# pearl cradle How good duolingo german course is?

It’s only a good supplement to a real course tbh. Nice for helping you remember the basics and practice them when you don’t have a person around to practice with. But not a good replacement for a course

agile trellis
# ivory ingot it's a good supplementary app

its good if you want to learn about a squirrel walking on a pineapple or something. yes, i will admit that duo is good for vocab and some sentence structures, but it doesnt give a detailed description on how the sentence is structured (unless you want to buy duo max, even then, thats also explained by AI and not an actual native speaker). i mean, duo is good for vocab and competitive play (those leagues), but other than that, its an okay app! no hate or shade to anyone who uses duo! its just how i see it, yk?

There are also tools to add shorcuts to your keyboard. Before I used Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC) (sadly discontinued in win 11, though it may still work). Right now I started using PowerToys (it is a Microsoft tool as well).

Check first if your new shortcut is already used in your system. I normally use an spanish keyboard, so I only need to add the ß.

edit: PowerToys seems much more practical if you just want a few more letters, Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC) is more practical if you want to add another keyboard/language to windows. Unless you plan to switch between keyboards often, though it still is discontinued.
