I hired a scripter to make a combat and movement system.
They finished it but the code was really bad, it would break every time we tried to add something new. I'm not a scripter so I only caught a few bugs on the surface and asked them to fix those, not realizing how broken the whole thing was.

We ended up having to rework both systems with different scripters entirely because they just didn't work.
I already paid them half of the full price we agreed upon (let's say 2k in total, I alr paid 1k) Do I still owe the other half, or some partial amount, or nothing since the work was bad quality and we never actually used it

Depending how bad the code was you could probably argue that they scammed you of your money. It’s hard to give a definite answer without the evidence but if the code didn’t work like you and the suspect agreed upon then they didn’t complete their side of the deal
