I tend to do my emissions with masks, then sometimes use patterns as maps

So yeah I see - a map would be good if you want one emission section in your material to handle all of that
in which case, just set the emission property in those layers, and use that to export an emission map in your export template

Honestly, I almost never use the emission thing, I tend to just make my emission masks with substance masks, then output greyscale single image textures, or pack them into a RGBA map.

Any way to edit existing animations? I got a Saber prefab and I'm trying to change the scale but I cannot go to preview or edit the animation that came with it in order for toggle to work
Add the animation to an Animator and then plop that Animator into the Animator component controller slot you want to act as the "root" of the animation and then you can edit from there

Is there a workaround to fix the nameplate/chatbox being far too high above you as soon as you use a cloth component?
Its been bugged for years and i doubt it ever gets fixed (there is a canny post but since not many use unity cloth it gets no attention)
Only thing i know is that it's normal when its disabled by default and enabled later with a toggle....but i dont want to spawn in with my skirt off and it staying off for others with animations disabled

Do you have retopology mode on? Or have another transparency setting in the view settings?
Really you should look at all of those, it's something in there, unless you specifically made that material have alpha transparency
Check material settings if it has alpha 100% or not.

you want one arm bone to follow another's movements? Probably you want a rotation constraint then?
tried it before, almost the same results. what im wanting to do is simple, i have an arm from a different model, and i want it copy what the arm on the main model does.
then you need rotation constraints. you just place it onto every bone and activate (given theyre in the same position to begin)

Look for an earlier error.
This error gets logged basically every time the avatar fails to upload
It's only relevant if you're trying to upload an avatar for the first time and the creator of the avatar forgot to clear the avatar's ID from the Pipeline Manager

then check the rest of the error log, like the other person said it's usually an error caused by something else

if you're already using Blender, you can attach accessories there, but if you'd rather use Unity, look into Modular Avatar or VRCFury
the way you can recognize official accounts is by the numbers at the end, if there are random numbers it's probably not an official account. Also try logging on the vrc website

I found the solution! It's as simple as including a https://creators.vrchat.com/avatars/state-behaviors/#animator-locomotion-control. (Sadly disables movement too, but oh well)

There's not too much to it. You just move UV islands to different tiles.
Normally, your UV coordinates are contained to [0, 1]
with a repeating texture sampler, 1.3 is the same as 0.3
this means that you can sneak some extra information into your UV maps
a UV tile discard will hide parts of the model whose UV coordinates are, say, between X=1..2 and Y=0..1
in this example, this would cause the lone square face to be hidden
I moved the UV but the texture for it is still down at the bottom. I'm not sure how to move it up where its suppose to be
You need to move the UV islands by an entire unit
It should wind up outside of the normal grid
It's still in the [0, 0] tile right now
everything by the lone square is in the [0, 0] tile here
and that part is in the [1, 0] tile

Put your UV islands back where they were originally, on top of the texture.

This will move the islands by exactly 1 unit in the X direction
You should wind up with something like this.
You can now discard these UV islands with any shader that does UV tile discarding.

You don't need a separate UV map unless you need a totally different mapping for the mesh
like, if you need a mapping for a scrolling emission effect
With default tiling/offset settings, it doesn't matter which tile you put the UV islands in

So far they've thrown me a bone whenever they say super windows-y stuff like this, but I'm getting nothing here. I don't have an AppData, I only have a really long path to the appdata in Steam's wine prefix for this game, and the SDK didn't put my new avatar in there. I think the avatar should be somewhere, though, because it's in my Content Manager. Anyone know where it actually went?

Did you switch out physbones for spring bones? there could also be issues if you're using vrchat exclusive add-ons, vrcfury for example

When two meshes (surfaces) occupy the same space, they fight for which one should be shown. If this is your issue, you would either need to delete one mesh, or apply the same material/uv for the layout to hide uglyness of the z fighting.

I would recommend looking into cats blender plugin, and using whatever blender version that the plugin needs. It's such a useful tool when doing avatar stuff in blender

I know, but the plugin should still help even if you create something from scratch. It does stuff like merge bones, decimation, do vismes, attaches meshes to armatures, etc

Also "Calculate" will increase the model size significantly.

Each face has normal which affecting light calculation. Blendshapes change the shape of face, which also change face normals. But fbx file doesn't contain actual face normal for blendshape, and that unity decides to "Calculate" blendshape normals in place of missing normals in fbx file. Changing to legacy makes unity to import blendshape normals from fbx file instead, and since it doesn't exist in fbx file, that make blendshape normal no longer have effect on the model.

this is a really basic question so I apologize if the answer is souper simple but Im just having troubl figuring it out; how dew I add constraints to bones so that they can only bend on a singl axis? In my case, I have a character wif robotic joints, so to avoid clipping issues I need the elbows and knees to only bend on 1 axis and nogt rotate on any of the other ones.

@midnight needle not really a thing with the IK. you can make your main humanoid arm from elbow to be just empty bones and a robot arm one a copy alongside it with rotation constraints, elbow one being axis limited, but ofc resulting visible arm position will be who knows where and your hand wont align with controllers

Yeah, you need a full humanoid armature if you want to use the locomotion and stuff VRChat provides. You don't need to weight paint anything to the bones though.
i tried weight paint it before but couldn't do the hands after the main body but it wasn't a humanoid armature or does the hands and main body has to be the same object?
i use the auto weight paint would that of been the problem?
nope, objects are not relevant. Also I've never had any automatic weight painting be good enough - most likely you'll want to check that before you export, and fix it if need be.

by "do" do you mean create? You must have the full humanoid armature if you want to be humanoid. There's an example pinned in #avatar-rigging but you need legs down to the feet, and arms down to the hands. toes/fingers not needed.

Visemeparameter. eye look you'd need rotation constraints from bones that VRChat drives to your specific armstures.
- you'd need two armatures, one that's humanoid which runs the human one and the second for the furry with rotation constraints driving it based on the first.
is there any resources for working with 2 armatures at the same time? i purely work in blender and then drag the fbx into unity. i never had to deal with multiple armatures

trying to use the VRC contact reciever, wanting to have it so when a hand enters the receiver, it toggles on a parameter, then toggles it off when the hand enters again. essentially a push to toggle system for an animation. Any ideas?
two variables, one that the contact triggers on enter, the second gets driven by VRC Avatar Parameter Driver when the first is activated. You use the second.

the contact-triggered variable can just be an animator parameter, no need for it to be in avatar parameters.

the file size is too big for the quest platform.

Did that already I removed alot of stuff on it and the texture sizes are very very low
use compression.

The FBX file looks too huge. It may be fixed by deleting unused blendshape or reducing the number of vertices in the mesh.
Im not good with blender and when I tried to mess with it in blender it messed up the project when I tried exporting it back into unity using the same fbx name and such o3o
had to delete the fbx and reimport the old fbx :/

Okay so, I'm planning to make a character that has two weapons chained together, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to make the chain have physics while also connecting on both ends. I've tried to use a mix of physbones and constraints to no avail. Does anyone have any clues/tips/examples on how to maybe achieve it?

Is there a way to have it so that my character’s limbs bend along multiple bones, along the lines of something like a rubber hose cartoon character?
Like, I want my character’s arm to bend in an arc rather than angling at the elbow. My plan was to use about 4 bones, but I’d want them to all bend simultaneously with my elbow. I tried something with rotation constraints and making the arms separately rigged from the hands, but I couldn’t get it working too well.
