are there extra prerequisites to have to have the best chest tracking? i know its only in beta, but wondering if there are things that should be done in unity or blender to make the tracking better
your user real height setting should be very close to your real height, and you should be using the "Lock all" mode
your rig should also closely match your IRL proportions
i see, so how about in terms of unity, like how you configure a humanoid rig, should upper chest still be unassigned?
I've had mixed results with upperchest. some people have had good luck with it. I personally only had good results by having Upperchest be the largest bone in the chest, and essentially making Chest a spine 2

i commissioned someone to build me a simple avatar (not textured at all, basic rigging) and it has bizarre uv issues so it can't be textured properly and one of the elements shows up near the feet when it's opened in another program. the blendshapes were made but don't seem to work. it looks completely fine in the blender view but falls apart anywhere else. if they can't fix it on their own with tutorials or a friend i may need help.

Dev tools don't necessarily have to mean release software for that platform too. It's very common in the industry to have a suite of tools for Linux as well, and some studios are near entirely Linux houses now
But they still release for Windows
Game dev on Windows has actually become kind of miserable 💀
My thinking is, if the tools are available on other platforms, it will attract devs from those platforms, or allow devs who are moving away from Windows for one reason or another to keep using the tools they're used to, rather than quitting content creation for VRChat (or having to relearn it in a way that doesn't use those tools)
I know a non-zero number of Quest-focused avatar creators who have a Quest to play and a Mac they build from, they're enthusiastic for the potential of the game and might appreciate a little more accessibility
You can basically run entire platform-agnostic programs from Unity itself, that's how a lot of industry tools for it work, maybe if the way avatars are created/uploaded is to change, or if new tools are created for them, something like that might be a smart idea

normally people suggest you make sure the avatar is at 0,0,0 in unity as well.

So issue from blender.
I took the fbx from my project, added some clothes with the CTRL+P thing and edited one blendshape. Exported back to unity.
The avatar is the same size but it acts small. I need to add loads more decimal 0s to physbone colliders and the hair which was on it is now giant compared to the avatar
What did I do?
It's as if the avatar is shrunk to 0.01 size, even though it says it's 1, 1, 1
Did you apply you transform in blender before you exported it?

For me, it's the avatar & machine hand seems to have different scaling (1 as max or 100 as max). Are you using the CATS plugin in Blender?
I have the plugin, but never use it as it tends to break everyting
For me, related to the 1 or 100 scale problem is, when I use CATS to fix model. it will enlarge the model 100 time due to it's set as 100

If you check you have dynamic bones imported into your project you can use the conversion tool in the latest VRC SDK to convert from dynamic bones to physbones
yeah, the avatar already uploaded, but the bone physics doesn't work.
I guess the most possible scenario here is that the dynamic bone convert into phys bone, but the setting is off.
Or you could set them up yourself. That avatar looks like it would only have physbones on it's hair and that's it (I think), so it shouldn't take you a moment to set it up.

Quest dies the moment it runs out of VRAM, unlike PC which just starts offloading stuff to system RAM (then the pagefile after that).
I'm kinda confused I tried to name a avatar "BoneRush" and it got named "Tonerush". Thought I typed it wrong, so I went to content manager and deleted and reuploaded it with the right name, now is still there as "Tonerush". Does it take a while for VRChat to update avatar lists or am I encountering some bug?

here's the thing i'm trying to make a ragdoll character move using input from my controllers
i have a script which basically says "add torque to this limb until the distance between the limb and the desired position is < some value
it's possible to use the animator to add torque to a transform
maybe there's a way to implement this condition there somehow.

So I was wondering how I can get bases or community models in blender to make a custom one like my friend Dragonoid Prime did, they used a already made model and then added community items to it to finish their Monty avatar.
I have Unity Hub and Blender.
Booth and Gumroad are both good places to buy or find a premade avatar to work from. A lot of them come as a .unitypackage file.
So if you want to get it into blender you may need to import it into unity before you can dive in.
If you just want to add props to an avatar, the easiest approach is to use different mesh render objects parents to the avatar. That way you can toggle them easily, but this can take a hit performance if you do too many though.
I've been out of the loop on creating avatars for a few months. I was going through and updating old avatars to use the Phys bones instead of Dynamic bones and I noticed there is an 8 Audio source limit on avatars now? I have a few avatars that have more than 8 audio sources, is there any way to upload them with the phys bones without breaking the audio sources?

Eyo question, when it comes to senders and receivers, with my new characters card selection system I'd like to basically have a menu system where a bunch of the cards I collected appear in front of me and I grab them to cast them, is that possible for one? And how hard would it be, and might there be a video or something that is similar to creating a menu like it that someone knows about? A good reference to the type of menu I'm envisioning is wizard 101 card selection but instead in 3d space

Yes. They do the job for someone and need to be paid for. Adjust and tuning physbones takes time.

VRLabs has a mirror detection prefab
IsLocal is just a toggle that's on on the user's client and off for the other players of the instance you are in, it won't detect mirrors
If you want a shader that's visible only on the mirror or vice versa you can paste this line on the shader, preferably on the vertex program to avoid overcalculating (even if it's not a lot), imma paste it but idk if the bot will remove it

that's a good idea, but sometimes it's nice to actually have an animator parameter which you can use to detect if something is in the mirror or not

Yeah I see Poiyomi's shader has an option for it too. I'm specifically trying to hide something from first-person view that is visible to everyone else (including to myself in mirrors) - I was hoping that I could use IsLocal if it was false in mirrors but sadly it's not.

How exactly would one go about getting the assets of an avatar of which the creator hasn't been avaliable in years.
The avatar I've used since my first time in VR is absolutely my favorite but I haven't been able to contact the creator. They also haven't been on VRC in years.

If the avatar is fully custom, not from a base and using assets bought or gotten for free, you are out of luck. However, you can always try asking in #avatar-search-old for anyone who knows of where you could find the original, if one exists, of some or all of the avatar you like.
there are people who use something peculiar in their avatars and is that when they shake their hand it has a sound when hitting another user, such as a slap

I have an avatar that shares a float value between quest and pc variants that control the hue of part of the model. As it stands, the two versions differ in how they change the hue, having one be a normal hue slider, and the other changing using separate toggles. I need a quest user to look and see if the colors change properly with the sliders on the PC version. Is anyone interested?

Yes and no. The colliders used for Physbone and collider dynamics are not the same as standard unity colliders, from what I understand.
im 99%sure there is no way to do this but cant hurt to ask. on quest is there a way to make something on your head visable to yourself? like say hair over your eye, or glasses?
I don't believe so. Usually on Pc you'd use constraints or rigidbody joints but both aren't used on Quest. Not sure if there's another method

Hey all! I might need some help please. I'm trying to figure out how to delete an item on this model I'm working on, however it's attached to the hair, and I cant make it transparent because, well, quest. It uses a different shader, texture, and mesh than the hair, but is attached to it as one entity. Anyone Know how I can take them apart or delete it without deleting the hair? (Please Ping in any replies so I can see it!)
Import the FBX into Blender. Click the avatar, hit TAB to enter edit mode. Find the item and hover your mouse over it then press 'L'. This should select the item and only that item (If it doesn't, you'll have to manually select the item). Press Delete and select either faces, vertices, or lines. Each my give a different effect so if it doesn't work, undo and try a different one. Once it's gone, export as an FBX back into unity.
See the only thing with that is, it isn’t the FBX, nor blender. It’s a unity project. I’ll try to use blender to fix it. Thanks I’ll report back in a bit!
if it fails you can alsways look in to the fbx exporter addon .its a bit of a hit and miss but might work for what you are doing
You should be able to find the FBX file in your unity project. Just go into blender, click import FBX, navigate your way to your unity project and it should be there.

There isn't. Too many factors to consider, mostly the total number of polygon GPU has to render and it depends on GPU spec, multiply by shader complexity
but if you do go above 70,000 you might have your avatar performance blocked by other people because it would be very poor

Hello! I'm already knowledgeable with Unity and have seen a few things about avatar creation, I'll now try something simple. I'm setting up a Git project for it, what's the difference with setting it up for a normal Unity project? I've seen a .gitignore online that unignores a few files in the Library folder, which is weird since it's normally a folder that's entirely generated. Also I wondered if the SDK wasn't going to store any sensitive information such as tokens, which I obviously wouldn't want in my repo if I want to make it public

Nope, an avatar has to be made public to be cloneable.
And you can't work around that by making the avatar private after they clone it, it'll lock them out of using it.

If you Zip the whole unity folder and send it
All they gotta do in unity hub is go to new > add proyect and voila! The proyect will be there exactly as you left it (I do this a lot in my Unity programing class and with my clients)
Just make sure you're logged out before zipping it and also ver important! Make sure it has no blueprint attached to it, otherwise it will send an error msg every time they try to upload it
And yes this process doesn't need them to download any plug ins you used, as all of them are already within the unity file

Hello, is there a way using constraints to make a child object on my avatar not affected by the avatar rotation, but always being the invert of it so this way a plane can always be facing the true forward of any world? Like toward the Z axis (blue arrow) in Unity?
Nvm I found how: Simply add an empty gameobject in your scene, make sure all its transform are set to 0 on all axis, then make it a prefab. Then use this prefab (not dragged in the scene, from the project tab) with a rotation constraint so it always stays at 0

Part of step one for optimization is to remove a few things: A chain that has a ridiculous amount of polygons, and removing the glass part of the glasses, only keeping the frames

The chain can probably be handled with 'select linked' in blender, in edit mode you zoom in on the chain and hover over a vertex, face, or edge depending on your selection method, and then hit L
And then X to delete
An if it doesn't ruin the model, then congrats! The chain is removed
- QuestTools on github can help to optimize it, obviously not very well for your computer version.
- That's a blender tutorial with cats plugin. Very easy, but gotta be willing to devote yourself to watching a few tutorials and some trial and error.
- Either 1 or 2 applies. Blender has a decimation tool that makes it easy. Unity has one too, called Mantis LOD Editor. As well, can the items also instead be deleted in Unity.

With only a shader you could display the time since the level was loaded, so that would be local so the time since you joined a world
For IRL time I think you would need OSC
If you'd be happy to limit yourself to certain worlds, a few of them has such a clock that shows up when holding up your wrist, but that's worlds

If your testing in unity with the Av3 emulator may have problems contacts not triggering.

audiolink changes values on your shaders or meshes, and can control blendshapes in any world that has Audiolink set up in it
it's most commonly used to control emission strength and hue on avatars so that you pulse with music

you're thinking about it the wrong way. the switch can happen in the animator
you would have one sub menu + a toggle to switch sets, but the menu options wouldn't change
you would just have separate animation states in unity, and an extra condition on every transition going to them

Make a condition to decide which sub state machine you’re using

Make multiple layers that have your animation sets
But
Use layer weight control and a master layer weight setting layer to decide which layer needs to be active and showing as the current animation set
Either way you can then just reuse the parameters for your animations to get different effects for the same sub menu, just different state of the avatar etc etc etc

Hiyo, was wondering if anyone could explain how avatar world constraint objects work, I know how to do them I watched a tutorial and it worked, was just curious on the logic behind how it works exactly
A constraint makes a specific type of transform mimic a target object.
You can specify how much you want the transforms to be affected by the target's transforms.
(i.e. weight 1 on a parent constraint makes it so the constrained object 100% mimics the rotation and translation of the target)
What world objects do is take advantage of this by constraining to something that doesn't have any transforms you can copy. (the world)
And how we deal with world objects is that we don't activate the constraint until we want the object to freeze.
Because once we activate it, the constraint will constraint the object to (the world) nothing and move nowhere because no transforms are happening.
There is jitter because the update rate isn't perfect and cameras/mirrors have different syncs of how often they recheck the constraint transforms.
But until the constraint activates, the object updates normally and moves following your player, but once the constraint activates, it is in the spot and gets no updates to transform except to stay in that spot.
That's mostly theory craft from working with constraints

Click on your avatar in the hierarchy and go to the pipeline manager component. Click the detach button (it detaches the id of the avatar, which means it will identify as a new avatar)

If the flickering still happens in toonlit shader, check if the mesh are z-fighting

Generally good to be no higher than Poor, but the better rank the better. You can go all out and do Very Poor if you want, just expect a large group of people to see you as a fallback often.

The reason I am the opposite is due to the way Drawcalls are now multithreaded. It gives them a lot better of performance vs. Blendshapes in high counts

Unless you use PlayspaceMover ingame to re-correct your positioning, you can't-- Yeah, you can make an animation that rescales your avatar, but back after 3.0 came out of beta, they removed the ability to readjust your Viewport (where your camera/head is) using an animator due to bugs/complications with future updates / IK, so you'll get stuck in the air if you shrink down, and slumped down really low to the ground if you make yourself big, unless you correct it yourself manually each time. Unless they brought it back without my knowing, I'm pretty sure it still hasn't returned.

actually I'm not sure since avatar 3.0 came along but before you just had to detach the blueprint pipeline or whatever it was called, and upload and it would be a separate slot
standard Shader should handle a metallic armor just fine

Models face mesh was merged with the body mesh and for some reason the face texture is the body texture.
So I separated selection
Make a new material on the face. copy previous mat, paste on new mat, do the same in textures...
WHY WHY WHY does changing the target file for the material or texture change BOTH? (the old and new mat/texture)

I updated an old SDK 3 with a newer SDK 3. it even seamlessly updated my Dynamic bones with just a click.
Though my avatar is.. rather simple. I donu what it may do with a super complex one

hi! i dont think this would go in avatar help cuz i believe its something in vrchat related and so i just wanna know if anyone else has noticed their avatars, both custom or vrchat made ones, that their fingers are slightly bent? normally just the index finger but ive also seen it on more

the fingers weren't like that before, so i think its from a recent update because i noticed that the open hand animation now moves a bit, and u can see the bent fingers on the idle animations and the hands open but on the other animations its not bent
but i just wanna make sure that its on vrchat side and now model side cuz ive been trying to fix it for ages on my model but now i doubt thats its even my model error
Depends on how the controllers are written. If it uses the Proxy animations then those will be replaced on Runtime (during your game) with real animations. When you made your own.. then they should just work
It also may change depending on your VR controller (Touch, Knuckle, Wand)
i havent touched the actual hand animations, the only thing touched hand wise is the classic duping the hand controllers to put in the facial gestures for a fx controller

Well. When I said controller depenadnt I meant to say that the "default gesture" is different for each.
Touch have open hands with no button pressed. Wands have idle (closed relaxed) with no buttons pressed and knuckles are like touch, but it's relatively difficult to get "open hands" on the knucklesso they're usually idle/relaxed
If it's with all avatars though, that probably means that some animations have been changed Server side with VRC

are invisible avatars still a thing? I want to attach a head to an invis avatar's hand to make it look like its floating
All you can do for your own avatars iiiiss changing that one controller for the actual hand animations and put in your own. You may have to re-write the whole controller though.

I don't see what that would be any different. As long as you have the full human rig, no program ever cares if those are bound to a mesh or just floating around

Edit existing textures, I'm planning on customizing an avatar base I have, i.e. recoloring it.
literally any image editing program like Photoshop
can technically use blender aswell but it might be a bit tricky

but if I can just use any image editing program.. interesting
if the model you have comes with the original substance file, use that

you're not really supposed to edit existing texture files (the images) with substance
you can import them, add a fill layer, and add the texture to those

private avatars can't be cloned no matter what
I heard most people use hotwap because it's easier, it clones your avatar 1:1
doing that is highly against TOS. despite that, you're bound to run into people that will have something in the background grabbing avatars from the cache. it's unavoidable
literally the only way to be safe is to not go to public worlds, and not hang around the kinds of people that would use such things
honestly though, I wouldn't worry about it
yeah, was just curious because I saw a lot of youtubers use some kind of password protection for Thier avatars, and Google autendifictor is something no one could just guess by trying, it would at least protect you against people with no knowledge on how to edit a ripped avatar
password protection does literally jack shit against ripping
the only thing it's really good for is for locking away certain features on public avatars
which can actually be quite useful
the only thing you can really do is use destructive methods like AvaCrypt
which destructively modifies the basis layer of the avatar, and relies on a custom shader with 4 key values to move the vertices back to the normal state
but even then, you could just guess the values
no solution is perfect
Is there a way to animate gravity in physbones? I try and it doesnt apply to the animation or parameter at all
only way to change physbone properties is to turn the physbone off and on

Are you saying that you do not have permissions to upload the avatar, or that you are having technical problems with the upload process? @stoic obsidian was referring to the fact the relatively new VRChat users have not accumulated sufficient "in-game" time to qualify as a user that can have avatar upload priviledges.

You must obtain at least "New User" Trust Rank in our Trust and Safety system in order to upload content. You can get this by just spending a few hours in VRChat, hop some worlds, and make some friends. Give it some time and you'll be able to upload content in no time.
As an aside, you must have a VRChat account to upload content. That means you can't use a Steam account, Oculus account, or Viveport account to upload content like worlds or avatars.

Pretty sure you can do it with Avatar Dynamics if you set up the stuff correctly. Not a modded client thing.

If grabbing physbones, it's avatar dynamic. But if you pickup a player and move their location around, that's something else.
okay yeah I meant moving the entire player around
Check for the world if it has player pickup feature. If it isn't the world then it's modded client.
stations can be confused for some as being picked up, they have to sit on it tho.
