When they first talked about imposters, it did sound like it wasn’t an automatic thing for every non cross platform avatar, but it does seem to be just hitting a button in the unity editor and it will create and upload the imposter of that avatar

Is there a way I can make an avatar quest but it doesn’t make it all low poly? I made an avatar for my friend yesterday and it literally looks like it’s made out of triangles it’s so ugly and has no physics
that just depends on what avatar you're working with entirely
It depends on your knowledge of software like blender, and the time you are willing to put in for it to look good but performant. I took an avatar from 30,000 to 16,000 polygons without any noticeable difference and altered the bone hierarchy so it would use less physbone components but keep all the same physics.
It is entirely possible to make very good looking quest content that is highly optimized, but it’s not free, it takes some work

Does anyone know what shaders are quest compatible? I'm trying to find something that looks better then toon Lit and standard Lite.
Most things under the VRChat/Mobile shader section. Standard Lite, Toon Lit, and Matcap are the typical ones used.
you can only use the provided shaders from the SDK. Standard lite is the most feature rich, and will be updated soon to be even better. for anything realistic shaded, use that
the next best one is Matcap lit. you can use Matcaps to fake any kind of shading style you want. note that I said fake, because it's not going to properly react to lights in the environment, but is good enough for most things
I recommend matcap lit for toon shading, because you can also achieve decent looking outlines with it too

hey is there a reason some of my own avatars are all white on quest? I thought it was the emission, but it didn't make a difference when i disabled it. Changing to toon lit also didn't help

i'd like to optimize my avatar for quest. here are the issues related to it.
i am VERY new to unity so this makes me kinda dumb in that regard, and i have no idea how to fix these issues without ruining the model completely :(
This is good enough. I woudln't have bothered if it means any quality reduction.
Here's a few ways to decimate to get lowered to 19,999 polygons (triangles in Blender). https://youtu.be/8MkgXcidxg4?t=181
This would get you to poor, a rank Quest can use to auto-show avis. But Quest tends to turn on VeryPoor anyways, and so long it isn't an eboy/girl, it'd probably not be wrongfully blamed for any lag.
Going to medium is only worth it if you want to auto-show to Quest always (15k polygons, 1 material), but the users need to have "enable avi" on for your rank in their safety settings, else it'll just be fallback'ed and they have to turn it on anyways like they would VeryPoor. The system in place is really designed like a "you'll enable it anyways."
Materials, you'd use cats materialcombiner to merge to one. If it works badly, after having installed materialcombiner like Cats will instruct you, you can click the materialcombiner tab instead of cats, change it to automatic, and merge the materials there. This should always be a last step option, as it is difficult to unatlass. I just finish the work, then save. Last, I just atlas, get the texture, export, then turn off Blender (no saving).
Physbone transform count is also good. Physbone components you can make better by instead using one for multiple roots.
Example, if you have a bowtie root with the two leafs(?) and a hairroot with all the hair. Instead of two on the roots, you could place one on the head for both, but use IgnoreTransform in the settings to have it ignore what shouldn't be affected, like eyes.
also wonder if it might be a good idea to upload a fallback capable avatar for yourself so no matter what folks always see something that looks like you
I fear it'd discentify people from bothering to enable your avi, so I always wear one of the default fallbacks.
But I do wonder if fallbacks can't use toggles, It'd be more rewarding to bother creating one. I don't know how many would leave the "show avi" off in the safety settings but enable animator.
If fallbacks can't use toggles at all, it's meh. Don't want to give users any reason at all to get comfy on it, would rather them enable avis for all ranks in safety setting but use performance block on poor/verypoor if they must.
fall back avatars don't have a particular components disabled they're just Good ranked Quest avatars
It's strange that I've never seen anyone wearing their good rated avi and using it as a fallback, and use toggles when doing that. I guess most just don't come with it.
But if so, I can at least abandon my idea of using different visemes' blendshapes to activate toggles while humming the corresponding vowel to keep it active.
there's not exactly a whole lot of triangle budget left to do toggling if you're hitting good Quest ranked
Well there's other things. Hair extensions, resize hands to be giant to slap others for comedy, physbone constraints to grab/toggle items (and physbone world constraint, that's a thing now) to drop something. Chair toggles to carry others. Toggling gestures, maybe to have a "sleep" always on. Stuff like that, I like really customizable avis, and all of this wouldn't affect the rank.

Sure you solved it by now, but: on the animator, which is above or under the avatar descriptor on the root gameobject, you click Apply Root Motion.
The FBX needs to be set to humanoid too. Click it, switch generic to humanoid. Click configure. select head. Remove jaw bone. Save.
If the animator isn't automatically added, click add component and add one (on the root gameobject).
The gesture layer also needs to be set up in a specific way, but the SDK would have warned you if it was wrong and you surely would have posted a screenshot of it if that is the case. So that should fix it up!
If you're talking about standardlite/toonlite, then maybe. Might be an emission problem. Tick on emission, and you drag the albedo texture into that slot. Set the albedo texture to white, set the emission to gray. There's color cubes that you can click on to change that. That's a nice "natural" level of light. If you're using vrchat/mobile/particles, then you're probably not doing anything wrong. These shaders doesn't like multiple colors on a single texture, that's what Alpha Blended is for but it's meant for worlds. More screenshots, of the textures, materials, shader settings, might be needed if you want a more exact/better answer. But hope this answers it for you!

hi im trying to use vrc cc to upload avatars but for some reason i cant switch builds to android
i tried downloading it but the only way i can make it quest is if i make the project in cc than go into my unity hub and change it to android build in that version

what all contributes to the upload size for a quest model besides textures?
i'm having issues with a model, where my total texture size for android build is only 2mb but the avatar is still 20mb somehow, i never have issues with poly accounts under 200k, which this model is just slightly above, but not enough to cause an upload issue
sorry, 200k for a quest model? that in itself will be quite large in size.
there are many things that can make a mesh large in size. poly count is the obvious one, but things like UV maps, vertex colors, shape keys, and vertex groups, can make it even worse
yes, i know that sounds really high and unoptimized, but with a lot of the community (i do these for commissions), these avatars can reach close to 1 mil in polys, and it's almost impossible to get them to the poly limit quest wants when they're that large, i've found 200k still goes on reasonably
that's still sounds way too high even for a PC Avatar

200k is simply too high for an avatar. at that point, you should be breaking it up into multiple, even for PC. it's irresponsible to put something like that on the quest platform. I'd strongly recommend cutting down the amount of things on that avatar

like, when we are all saying thats too big for quest, we are not only saying that cause it is irresponsible to upload something that poorly optimized, we are legit saying that is the source of your file size
I assume that is also not only one skinned mesh, in which each of those may have multiple uv maps, multiple materials, and a lotta blendshapes
blendshapes don't really contribute to file size, when you are using a reasonable amount of polygons
at even 100,000 polys you are going to incur fairly large file size increases from blendshapes and UVs alone, and that increases exponentially, especially blendshapes
took it back into blender and removed some uv maps and combined materials and all is well : D
at least you removed some of those draw calls
but im still gonna say ur doing it wrong if you "need" 200,000 polys
if i reduce it any lower than 120k polys and the meshes start morphing to a horrible degree D : the only thing that can be done is spread word to 80% of the creator community, asset makers, model makers ect to make things more optimized
me as one person isn't gonna change most of the community's ways
i was able to reduce polys down lower, it wasn't quite at 200k but it's under that now, and i've never had any quest ppl from previous conversions complain about size issues on their platform so idk ;;

That is a warning that has existed for at least more than a year, may have been around since the Quest version was first released.
While the now in alpha Android phone version of VRChat doesn't support very poor, it is a whole nother matter to remove a feature from a platform entirely, so I wouldn't expect it to happen.

Is lightmapped not allowed to be used on avatars anymore? I uploaded an avatar months ago with it and it seemed to work fine but now Unity is giving me this error as if lightmapped isnt considered a mobile shader when it is
why would you want to use lightmapped on an avatar? You wouldn't be able to make use of the entire point of that shader, lightmaps

Makes sense. That's unfortunate though, because the reason I was wanting to use it was because the alternative would be going into blender and fixing my model's vertex colors and I was trying to be lazy 😅 Lightmapped showed my texture colors how they should be shown without me having to do that
removing vertex colors in blender is extremely easy, it's just a couple steps
you could also just use VRCQuestTools if you're that lazy

Looks like it was decimated too far, or decimation was applied to the entire mesh. When doing decimation to remove polygons, you should avoid touching the hands and head too much because they are disproportionately affected
cats blender plugin has options to avoid decimating hands and head
for quest, it's best to delete as much unneeded geometry as possible to allow for more geometry in key areas. for example, deleting the body when it's underneath clothes
after trimming away those parts of the mesh, then you can do your decimation

When I upload it. It tells me the avatar is to big like yesterday it said the maximum size is 10.00 mb and the avatar was 12.36mb

You upload to one platform first, then switch platforms and upload the version for that platform to the same blueprint ID

you have multiple avatars enabled in your scene. disable all other avatars besides the one you want to upload

Poi allows it eeeh. And without it, standard lite breaks on some maps with bad lighting, and toonlite doesn't allow emission:)
No, sadly. I use the knife tool in Blender to cut away emissive parts from the rest of the mesh, and make that into its own mesh. VRC wants us to optimize so we have to unoptimize to get around it. ...Just let Quest have it as is and put a note in the expression that VRC is to be blamed

Yeah but they're still not adding a secondary emission. That or like Poi's minimum lighting, or a checkbox to "include albedo texture into emission" while still being able to use an emission map.
So some dark worlds make you pitch black on Quest. Yes, it's a world creator's fault. Still, only fix avi creators can do is sacrifice the emission slot: Toonlit or standardlite+dragging albedo into emission. How far over 10MB are you? You can most likely lower the resolution of your textures, they are generally one of the biggest factors to file size

And the file has, unfortunately, more than 4 texture noodles
If you want to do anything avatar, I would recommend making an actual VRChat account instead of logging in with meta if you haven’t already, and then you need to get to “new user” trust rating by simply playing the game before you can upload anything

Potentially if it’s set up for that, although the process of making an avatar happens outside of VRChat in 3D software such as Unity (the game engine VRChat runs on), Blender (3D modeling, sculpting, texturing, and animation software), and maybe other stuff like Substance Painter although that one can be expensive while the other two are free

these are the specific issues i have
does there need to be that many separate meshes? if not, join them in blender. can you lower any of the texture resolutions? if yes, do so. can you combine any of the materials and atlas the textures? if yes, again, do so
you can also see about manually decimating for less polys but that count is already fairly low i suppose. if you want a poor rating at least on quest, you need to get down to 20k but i wouldnt stress
cam has a pretty good video about rebaking the textures to combine materials i believe. let me see if i can grab it

I also find pay with exposure to be a tactical decision, such as if you just started out and someone offers to put you on a channel that regularly gets 50k views. So long the work is quick. I once did an avi for a youtuber with 200k. it was a free gift, I said I didn't need a callout, but they did you know thought that counts

you don't
transparency of any kind is considerably more expensive on mobile GPUs, so it's not allowed on quest avatars at all

In the quest side, is there a way to prevent a certain material slot from rendering? I don't mean it going pink or black, I mean just fully prevent rendering. Something, something, eyeball lens cap thing.
for PC you could use a discard shader, but you can't for quest. I don't think there's another way short of removing the material slot entirely, but that's one-way and it'd have to be the last slot

You fake it. There are 2 ways, inverted normals and cut out shapes as part of the mesh. Both are for different effects. What are you trying to achieve?
Either they faked it or they used a modded SDK which is against TOS and risks getting banned. Don't do that.

Nope that doesn't work. It will upload but just turn invisible. Also only let's you upload particles with that shader

If you want to make something look like it's "inside" something then you can do that with inverted normals. Like for example if you wanted it to look like your avatar's head was inside a fishbowl, you could do that with inverted normals. I had a friend do that once. And for something like blush, eyebrows, or hair, where detail was created with transparent textures, you can cut those out so they are detailed in the mesh instead of the texture.
Inverted normals are also used for outlines on quest

Quest does not support shaders.
You need two projects
One is strictly pc build the other is strictly android build. For pc do sdk > poi > anything else > pc avatar.
In your android project sdk > quest avatar
Once pc is done uploading to your account, go to content manager and copy ID of the avatar you just uploaded and paste it into your android projects blueprint ID. Detach the current ID if there is one attached then attach the copied one to there. Then upload, it'll make your avatar have a pc/quest side.

For Android/Quest, I am wondering why "Vrchat/Mobile/Particles/Alpha Blended" does not work for Android/Quest?
Transparency, of any kind, is significantly more computationally intensive on mobile GPUs compared to desktop GPUs
it would result in major performance issues if avatars were able to use it
it would mean that in some specific cases, there could be multiple layers of transparency on certain areas of the screen
That one and "lightmapped" I am pretty sure were meant for worlds (lightmapped makes no sense to use unless you are doing a world).
There is no arbitrary limitations on shaders on Quest worlds, but those two are meant to be more performant for Quest.

I have a question, regarding the physics of clothing and hair in a model for VR chat, how should I configure it in Blender to transfer it to VR chat?
you would want your hair and clothes (the parts that will move) to be rigged with bones, so that you can give them physics using Physbone components in unity
for things like hair, you can have a single root bone as the parent of multiple bone chains, that way a single physbone component can affect all of those bone chains

not easily. you'll need some annoying contact sender/receiver setup to drive animations to drive those blendshapes
I'd avoid corrective shapekeys if you can avoid it, using extra bones with constraints is easier in a lot of cases and doesn't need any fancy setup
and it will work regardless of other people's safety settings
And more or less how I could do that?, I know that in blender you can put restrictions on the bones so that they move up to a certain distance or rotate up to a certain angle but that is done with drivers
you don't need drivers, you can just use bone constraints
getting them to match the behavior of Parent/Position/Rotation/Aim constraints in unity might take some tweaking
but should be doable

in my opinion, an avatar base (body, face, hair) shouldn't be above 40k
which would leave you 30k for accessories before hitting the 70k limit of Very Poor rating

everything becomes triangles in the end, the SDK does count tris. however, working on meshes that are using quads is significantly easier than one that is a mess of triangles

when you import the fbx you need to install the fbx exporter extension in the unity extension manager from the unity feeds
after that you right click the fbx and select > convert fbx to prefab variant and have it dump the prefab into a Prefabs folder

After that drag that prefab into your scene and then go into inspector where the prefab is root and add the descriptor there.
Also: after the fbx exporter is ran you will need to go back to reimport it into the fbx file itself as well

you would create an animation for moving the tail, then add it to a new layer in your FX controller

from unity hub
close the project, open unity hub, click the "Installs" tab, click the settings for 2019.4.31f1 and add modules you only need to check "Android Build Support", the children like open jdk or android sdk don't need to be installed.

The scamming is just cause you are here in this discord server, the payment is cause it takes hours of work to make an avatar, especially from scratch.

I wish quest could be updated to allow up to 150 bones for poor rank and not up to 75 for that rank as many people have bases alone with 75 bones which does not include things like hair, head, etc that would make them able to fall off of the avatar or unable to use specific features.
(same as poly’s I feel a poor rank with up to 32k poly’s would be ok when quest 3 comes)

quest 2 is in desperate need of performance improvements as is, and we're focusing an immense amount of effort to squeeze out every little bit we can across a wide variety of systems. It's safe to say we are not currently entertaining ideas that would make things even worse 
yeah hair bones are the worst as well, the hair I use on mine has 47 strands and 71 bones alone.

I'm not entirely familiar with the performance characteristics of additional bones but it's safe to say they're probably not free

Like my avatar is still within quest limits with a full humanoid unity rig, a tail, ears, a snout, a tongue, and head fluffy bits all rigged with bones
If a head of hair by itself it going over the bone limits, you have way way too many bones making up the hair. Each strand doesn’t need to be It’s own chain of bones

yeah, if you want it to be visible on PC
luckily, making an avatar work well on PC from a quest version is literally effortless
you could safely just switch build target if you want and hit upload
really, unlike what a lot of people say, it is safe to switch build target from a pc to quest avatar anytime really, it just takes a lotta time the first time or any time you add a lot of new files into the project
people are rightly concerned, cause it used to potentailly cause issues, but by now its stable enough
So to clarify I take the version of my avatar that’s quest compatible, set the build target to android, upload it, switch the target to Windows, and upload it again?
yeup, you can do that
for an avatar to be cross compatible, it needs a pc and quest version uploaded under the same avatarID
so technically the same avatar could be totally different on each platform... but thats a technicality

reason being that the IP addresses you log into are linked to your account. if someone else logs into your account from a different PC and ends up getting banned, you will also be banned

I just made a model in blender that I want to import into unity to import into vrc (I have never done this before), and I was wondering if there are any up-to-date tutorials for doing that that anyone knows of. I know the old way involved using SDK2, and all the tutorials Ive seen still use that, but I know theres a new way your supposed to do it now and I cant find anything for that uses the new version. if the model is rigged and everything just export as fbx and drag and drop the fbx into unity
then go and click on the fbx in the unity assets menu and check if the rig is set to humanoid
if not just configure and set bones to bones

just for some clarification: when i go into vrchat my entire body works totally fine, its just rotated 90 degrees. but like my eyes are on the side of my head, when i look forward im looking at my profile. if I move my arms they track perfectly, they just dislocate from my body a bit

I think it is telling you but you are right on the edge, so you are at like 10.004 MB > 10.00 MB and since it only shows two decimal places it rounds down to 10.00 MB > 10.00 MB

hey could i get help with uploading a quest avatar? ive purchased an avatar and the unity file came with both the pc and the quest versions in one scene and im wondering how to upload the quest one. pc has uploaded fine. ive got errors like these and it feels like its detecting both of the avatars at once ?

So it means somewhere on the avatar there's a script that says something like mono script missing or something like that, usually it's because someone made the model with dynamic bones, you have to find where the missing script is on the avatar and delete the componment in the descriptor

As far as I'm aware, the latest, SDK3 on the VCC.
The one issue I do have is with the pelvis and thigh rotations, but I can't imagine that'd be the cause?

I've seen Android uploads are really hit or miss on 3.3.0

Oddly, if I change the platform to Windows, it says I can upload it as a fallback, however when I change back to Android it goes back to saying cannot.
Downgrading the SDK to 3.2.3 fixed the issue.
on the very last step for uploading did the pc added the avatar id to the quest blah blah blah went to upload it and it failed... idk wth this error is please help before I go mentally insane

Question, I have two versions of my avi, one available in Quest, and another with full detail for Windows
I have them both in different skin IDs
My question is, can I have different versions if I use the same ID? For example, building for Android overwrites the built for Windows version?
Or if I take the detailed avatar and upload for windows, then take the quest avatar and upload for android, using the same ID, the windows one will be used when people see me in windows and quest one when they see me in quest?
avatar IDs have two slots, one for a windows build, and one for an android build. uploading an avatar while your target is Android will not override the windows build

I made a very low detail version for quest, but it stayed at Very Poor, could not optimize further, since my avatar was initially thought for Windows
The Windows version is at Medium
I hope that with Quest 3 the limits for the Quest version will rise

the quest 2 already struggles majorly with the existing content, due to people not giving a shit about optimization, and expecting too much out of the hardware. because of this, crashes are commonplace due to the quest running out of memory
the quest 3 does have more graphics processing power, and bumps the ram from 6 to 8. this should make for a hopefully more stable experience, but it will likely not be that much better.

You can charge and play. The only thing would be your controller battery, but just have 2 sets of rechargeable batteries.
