you still need to do that yourself it just makes it where it's easy to swap the parts when you switch build so you don't have to set up multiple scenes

In the Android build settings, should texture compression be set to ASTC if all the textures in the scene are set to be overwritten for Android with Compressed ATSC? Would overriding in the build settings just make switching between builds slower?

the red bar at the bottom of unity doesn't constitute as the unity error console rather just shows one errror from it

I had a similar issue with the Android NDK on Mac. I installed Unity and the Android add on at the same time, but it failed to install part of it and complained the entire time it couldn't find it. The separate Android installer meanwhile couldn't find the Unity install and failed, even though it did exist.

Installing the NDK manually and pointing Unity to its location in preferences worked, mostly, but if you're having that issue with the whole Unity Android package, not just a part of the NDK/SDK, I'm not sure what to say beyond reinstalling Unity and selecting the Android build tools during installation when it asks which parts to install.

its been awhile since ive done particles like a normal person but they could be "mesh particles" you might be seeing, or theyre using a specific particle settng that might be getting the desired results

why might the terrain always be set to max smoothness on the Android build? The shader is set to the default Nature>terrain>standard. The metallic slider works but the smoothness and specular don't do anything. I don't remember having this issue before.

When I try to put down a portal marker and use the "move tool", I can't see the rectangle like usual, only this thing. The rectangle appears when I use the "edit bounding volume tool", but I need to see it while I'm moving it (as I've been able to do to this point). The game object is active. Probably a dumb question but I don't do Quest versions very often:
If I want to make sure a variable stays synched between the PC and Quest version, I just need to make sure the variable is named the exact same thing, capitalization and all, right? The fact there's fewer variables in the Quest version should be irrelevant?

TBF I had a different error that showed that and it took me a day to realize the error wasn't actually an error itself. I kept thinking the SDK had the wrong directory. Turns out it'll spit out an error with that any time builds fail.

SDK is a bit undercooked.

Particles are SEVERELY limited on Quest and you cannot use Transparency (so the VRChat's Mobile Particle shaders are out of the question, save for one).

Furthermore, if you exceed the particle limitations or your avatar is ranked vrcPerfVeryPoor then particle systems are completely disabled.

If you don't have to crunch things, ASTC is actually reccomended. It halves the VRAM cost but still looks fairly good

(only reason it's not default is cause it's supported on less Android hardware, but it's supported on both Quests)

Hm are you using the same project for both platforms? There shouldn't be much of a difference between the two lightmaps at all. I bake my lightmaps with bakery for the PC build and then just switch platforms. Lightmap usually looks identical.
Make sure to use ASTC for texture compression which looks much better than the default ETC that is used for android.

Could be that you looked at polygons in blender instead of triangles. Since on export I think blender triangulazies all meshes you basically get double the polygons.

Last year I published a FBT demo video using nothing but an iPhone – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiA2mr3LhEY. At that time I figured from docs that it would be impossible to implement it in VRC. However, I was told many times over past year that VRC community would greatly benefit from such affordable FBT solution. (Company I work for is developing standalone solution that can be integrated as a lib in existing Unity projects. I was given permission to share code of original demo.)

I would like to revisit the idea of implementing FBT with a phone in VRC. The aim is to support only Quest + iPhone combo. Could you please look at this code snippet – https://gist.github.com/mlajtos/506c0138ffd43e30bd597f2612448f8a – and tell me if it could be integrated with current development capabilities?

Explainer: Quest probes local network for the phone via ZeroConf. After connection, body pose data is streamed from phone to Quest as UDP messages. Every message contains 91 joints represented as Matrix4x4<Float> which are decoded and transforms are applied to GameObjects. Yeah, 91 is the maximum app can provide. Internally (company I prototyped this for) we use only 13 + hands and head are from HMD – we do fancy math to match the 2 data sources. Since the transport is done over UDP on local network, the data transfer is not a problem.

Im on the live build of the quest 2 and i appear to sometimes not have my abatar be with my body, like the avatar goes in some kind of desktop mode state and i can see in its head. I jave no idea whats happening but it only started yesterday

not really a development question... if you have the link cable, open up the Oculus software on your pc, plug the cable into your fastest usb 3.0 port and the other end into your Oculus, turn on the Oculus and in the notifications menu you should see an option to start the link

I think far value, whatever you can have as the minimum distance. So in a world that I work on, I set it to just over the other side of the room wall. This is the farthest distance that I can see in this world.
As for the near value it gets clamped between 0.01 and 0.05 so choose 0.05 😄

yes, that is because PC worlds are compiled on different hardware and have different optimization standards

polygons are part of it, but a lot of it boils down to shaders / draw calls

most PC worlds would melt a quest either because they are too complex or too poorly optimized. you have to know what you're doing to make a reasonably complex quest world so that you can leverage atlasing, instancing, occlusion culling, etc etc

i mean, it is just a gaming console. if it's crashing outside of VRchat, you probably have a hardware fault. if it's mostly happening in VRchat, then you're likely pushing the hardware beyond its limits. try adjusting your safety settings to not show avatars or specific avatar features for non-trusted users, or people who aren't your friends

a slightly cleaner method is using a mesh particle if its a imag animation as particles allow you to use sprite sheets which will automatically animate thru it

I also feel like shader devs should be able to submit their custom shaders to be reviewed and given a custom flag or something to be allowed use in VRChat on quest should they qualify for the desired requirements

right. but as of right now. all quest avatar shaders are baked in. which is why additive no longer works correctly unless your avatar is old enough to overule the baked in params that the game it looking for

I hate that making avatars for quest is so stupidly tedious, it sometimes makes me want to just not make the avatar work on quest, but then like 90% of people cant see it and then I dont want to use it

and I'd need to use the sprite sheet along with a meticulously made offset animation for each frame of it just to make it spin

and then there is just how unoptimized the game feels, especially on quest where it still lacks in performance even though they cut every corner possible, at least visually. its just not a fun process right now

audio sources take a bit of CPU to process, and you already have one spatial source by default for every single character

then there are particle limiters which, are justified, but they still have not given us the limits they set, on the restrictions page (which was last updated ~10 months ago) it still says "the numbers will be given soon" so optimizing stuff like 3D particles is painful

i'm sure some of these things could be smoothed out eventually, but the vast majority of quest avatars are terribly optimized and the vrchat team has to set guidelines based on the worst case scenario

I get VRChat on the quest was a no brainer, but dang is it ever annoying, if the quest is that weak then it really feels like its not ready for VRChat

the quest isn't that weak but most of the content is user-submitted, and most users that submit content have no idea what they're doing

the great thing about vrchat, and also the bad thing about vrchat, is that it's more or less just raw unity engine instead of paint-by-numbers. so this means that you can make pretty much whatever you want if you know what you're doing. but most people are not going to know what they're doing.

maybe one day VRC can have a custom pp engine or something, because stuff like the lack of bloom, and custom shaders (and various other limits) both keep me from ever using that version and make me not want to make stuff for it

bloom is not recommended for double rendering or vr at the same time. thats what actually hulted me from making a quest bloom shader was basically the actual desire of the userbase

but as i said, with the baked in shader props and params, in theory extra things can be lifted. but the cpu and fillrate bottleneck is still prominent

I just wish I could have all of my toggles use one mesh renderer, which I'm sure is impossible (and I have a much needed optimized version of this avatar for that reason) but man if I could cut back on that I would be able to take my avatar out from being "very poor" at least on PC

but imo, a overhaul on the safety system would be nice, such as a mesh count limit for the local user and such. so if an avatar has like 50 meshes that all total up to 50k poly. if only 1 mesh is shown and its below 20k, then it should be shown, but if the player isnt completly shown, any additional toggle meshes will not be shown

Hi, so i have a a webserver at home that i use to play videos for quest in mp4 format that normaly works. When i test the world in unity it plays the clip but in vrchat it is just black (untrusted urls are enabled). My server has no dns name its just my public ip with video (http://ip/output.mp4). I dont see the problem why it shouldn't play. Is there any solution for that?

the second one can't really be fixed if you're seeing fall back either it's a pc-only avatar so there's literally nothing to load on the quest or a very poor Avatar which would make you lag if you loaded it

And there where a few other fixes in there and interactions with other parts of the avatar API. There is no way to seperate them out. Your just gonna have to upgrade it.

Okay answer me this why can't quest players hear avatars but for some reason it can hear literally almost everything and plus it has an option to turn up avatars in the audio section of settings why have that there if you cant even hear avatars. That's just my real question.

@slow girder hey sorry for the ping but I think I have suggestion that could change vrchat for quest possibly forever, (sure you just came out with a big project and you guys need some time to relax I get it) my suggestion is that quest players are able to access PC Worlds and PC avatars but they'll get a warning saying that "this could cause some lag it can also have missing parts texture or sounds and there's a possible chance that it could crash are you sure you want to continue with this" and then they'll even have the option to not go with the changing or going into the world or they could accept it and have possible chances of crashing or lag but this could open up a lot of players and a lot of stuff it could take some time to code for it to work and everything all that kind of stuff but it could be a game changer for Quest players. what do you think?

how are you supposed to make transparent blush layers work on quest? it works on every popular rusk avatar ive seen but I can't figure out how to do it on mine. the alpha blended shader is still blocked of course and the other particles just dont seem to appear at all
