Hi there, folks!

I was considering trying out vrchat with a couple of friends, but have heard some people express security concerns about the platform.

I am aware of the Safety options which can be used to greatly mitigate some of the issues, but I figured it would be worthwhile to ask people who use vrchat regularly about any issues they've experienced with the platform or other users, and how best to address those issues. I'm a bit paranoid about security so I'm just trying to cover all bases as best I can haha

What I was more concerned about are any possibility of encountering actual hackers, information skimmers, encountering malicious scripts, etc. I've heard of crashers, which can be mostly countered through Safety options, but has anyone encountered anything like that?

In fairness I'm not that tech savvy so don't mind me if I clearly don't know what I'm talking about 😅

I'll be honest, safety options nowadays only do so much to protect you. They're mostly only there to save your eyes from cancer nowadays. Most modern crashers just crash you regardless of your settings. Can't protect against them without violating tos yourself too. However people can't run any custom scripts on your pc. I don't know about any occurrence of udon or avatars running harmful scripts. Udon is also contained in a VM called udonVM to prevent malicious stuff. Also what you can do with udon is purposely limited.

The only thing being able to talk to external Webservers are video players

But just stay in sdk3 worlds and keep untrusted urls off

If that's any concern

Overall users won't be able to harm your pc with malware etc. The most they can do is quit your game and be annoying lol

There is outputlog in pc files under some hidden folder where you can find every event happened in the game... For example every person who was with u in a world

Thats how i found one who i didnt fr or remember whole player name, just opened the file before the crash and searched for player names and found him

You need New User ranking (or higher), and part of that requires VR Chat account merged with your Steam account, it's unclear how much time or whatever else you need to do, I have New User ranking, I currently have the merged accounts, about 25 hours in VRC, and a few friends added

So make sure you got a merged account and just spend some time socializing, you should get it real quick, and then after, you can start uploading

If you don't merge accounts, you'll be stuck at Visitor

i have question. SoI've been unable to turn around with the Oculus right-stick. It works in other games (Oculus and Steam apps/games) but it's becoming a bit of an issue when i need to re-orientate myself in VRChat. but it's probably just because most are full/if vrc displays ones out of my region or not or something

but it felt pretty crappy because i was only able to visit the same few rooms over and over on a map

Did you make sure under settings in Vrchat to not have "Holoport Movement" enabled? it would appear like your avatar just runs away from where you are standing to a place where you are pointing; then you teleport to it when you stop inputting controller action.
If so; try switching that off; and see if it helps.

Also; check your Controller bindings; try a standard binding if needed.

if lobbies are full the instance will not show up on the lower secion of when you are looking at a specific world's description, also, bear in mind that the world does count people who are also sitting in friends plus, private, etc worlds in those player counts.

I would enable and disable it in VRchat settings; if Holoport is disabled you should not see your avatar move away from you.

Ik it's much more in-depth issue than a random Discord post can solve, but generally try to find a point in a conversation that interests you and hop in - people are in public worlds to socialize and talk with people, otherwise they'd be in a private world
Joining less popular (i.e non-front-page) worlds can help, by reducing the amount of kids/chaos/etc - joining instances without a lot of people in them, and/or starting a new instance and waiting for people to come in could help too o:

But other people don't focus on your mistakes nearly as much as you may think, and they're not nearly as harsh with other people as you are with yourself.

Sometimes I just "roleplay" my avatar, if that makes sense. It also helps to be mute sometimes. Other people only see what you show. If you act like an extrovert, you become an extrovert in their eyes. There is no "you" which follows you around, as far as other people are concerned, you are whoever you act out.

It's just stupid to try to protect some JPEG, or model or anything from being duplicated by minting it as an NFT. NFTs are made as proofs of ownership, that you own something, like a movie ticket.
