My largest filesize avatar (with decent res textures) is 9.7MB. All the rest are around 5MB or so after checking.

It depend of what does the avatar tho.
Some of my avatars are over that but have a l o t of things in it using inventory system, multiple models/props, particles etc. It does add up really fast when doing animations
And if you use PBR with decent textures details on everything, the size of the model go big easily

AFAIK avatars are actually downloaded via geo-based CDNs so it shouldn't be much of an issue. The ping is to the US based master servers for the game, not the CDNs.

i've seen custom made quest content look better than some 70K models

if i were you i would copypaste the files from vrchat temp to a usb, delete them and see if it works that way, my friend had trouble loading avatars before and this method helped
moving files to usb is just for backup incase you need the logs later on

@faint skiff motion smoothing locks the framerate to 50% of the HMD to give the GPU more time to render the frames, then interpolates between them to fill in the missing frames. The performance hit is by design.

@unique mauve I mean there's a performance hit even when it isn't interpolating. So, somewhat ironically, having motion smoothing on may cause your framerate to drop into the range where it has to use motion smoothing when normally it would still be at the target framerate.
