In this case they were responsible for dynamic bones working correctly on part of my clothing an hair, but not as a root bone, as an offset point for the motion to pivot from.
Bones don't need to be weighted or visible for dynamic bones to effect them. I didn't even realise what they were doing at first, but this newer version of CATS removing them has really broken how this moves.
There's other bones in the original MMD that I'm seeing now, that are just nice to have. An eyebrow parent bone that allows the eyebrow (big cyclops one) to do things like rotations without needing to separately reposition it's children.

Log into your steam account, and there should be a button in the system menu that says upgrade. Press that and it will give a window with instruction. It's best to do that on desktop mode

If you want writing to stay in a world, you would have to add it in Unity itself. You can't save anything in worlds in-game since if you make a new instance or leave, the world resets to its starting state

Purely speculating here: It could be they have a closed beta that runs prior to the Open Beta. I imagine that if there was a closed beta group, they might work more closely with the devs to report and fix issues whereas the open beta is more for catching edge cases and the odd bug or two that slips through.
