That world is a lot more than just some generative images placed into some frame and calling it "art". Its more like a custom shader gallery that uses AI generated textures as part of the full workflow to achieve effects that wouldnt be really possible without the technology. The real art behind it is the fusion of AI into the complete concept and if you look deep enough the gallery even criticises the problematic use of AI. But The solution is not fighting against it. Its fighting against the wrong use of AI, like generic Spam of Pictures or countless hours of generative videos on youtube. People will have to learn to deal with AI. It will not go away.

By the way: I am probably paying more artists with this world than most world builders in VRC. I am paying for all Music and Sound licences and also the voice actors that were used for the AI generated voices are being paid.

my issue personally isnt just "ai = lazy" (even though it very often is. see last paragraph), it's the fact that ai is (usually) trained through theft. paying music producers & voice actors doesnt rlly offset that.
also data centers housing large ai models use fuck tons of energy, which often comes from non-renewable sources (especially in the us).. while ai users arent responsible for this, it's still a major downside of the widespread usage of ai we've been seeing.

i've looked around the world, and i highly doubt a lot of it "wouldnt be really possible without the technology".. the only things that are really unique to ai are the parts of the world that are pretty much just an ai image gallery (the cats and the panoramas), everything else could have easily been made using photoshop, or in the case of the nature skyboxes, with licensed stock photos

on a completely unrelated note though, the world is a pain in the ass to navigate no offense 😭 even with the teleports my pinky hurts from holding shift

Yes. Many. AI might make it easier for a layman but it does not make it possible. I've used custom seamless textures in many of my world's including for skyboxes with custom shaders and converted shadertoy shaders. There have even been automated scripts to make such textures going back YEARS. Just actually takes a bit of passion rather than mashing a button and getting a result and then not actually learning a skill in the process like the years I spent in digital arts school or researching methods.

Thats why I said earlier its more a shader gallery that uses AI and not a regular AI gallery where the images alone are the focus. Creating and finetuning the shaders is also still a lot of work, also lots of photoshop work because everything is multilayered and animated. Realsitically it wouldnt be possible. Every artist has to focus on something. I focus on shaders. Others might focus on digital art but use ready shaders. Others focus on modelling alone, Every approach is valid. I dont think there is any artist that actually has all the skills from perfect modelling, over painting, photoshop, shader development and so on. So to do it in a realistic time, some parts have to be simplified and I dont think this world would exist if every step would have been painted manually. I would have lost focus on the shader development and it would have been something else. Also, a large part of the creative process was a lot of prototyping different ideas and throwing away and change many parts. Not really feasible by doing all paintings by hand, especially if they have to be tilable, which is really not that easy with paintings. So yeah. Possible, in therory, maybe. If you want to work nonstop for 10 years on one world. I would still like to see something you made...

So, after my first week on VR chat, I got to say, some things surprised me. I came in with expectations that were rather incorrect.

1. The game is way less active then expected. I thought it was filled with tons of daily active users.

2. There's not a lot to do. The games are all subpar without friends. I mean they're not bad, just not really worth playing compared to other PC or VR options. The only other thing to do is roleplay or chat.

The novelty started waring off through, and those good moments are far from being common. I experimented a lot going to different instances and worlds. Maybe it's more fun and intresting with VR?

What's popular always fluctuates and tends to skew toward what you see there. There is a ton to see and do if you put in some measure if effort.

I've tried looking at emppty worlds, it's pretty cool for the simulation, I like feeling like I'm in a 90's arcade again. That only last so long, and it's awfully lonely.

You'd find your enjoyment will change as you make friends. Stick with it, but its not for everyone, the experience is vastly different than being immersed in vr.

Alright, I'll be around then. I was hoping if I liked it enough I would make some content for it myself, I still might, but with such a small audience and the "proprietary" language VRC uses, I'm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze.

I wouldn't say the audience is small at all. Many popular VTubers gained initial popularity because of VRChat. There's plenty of content to be had. Although, I am not the biggest fan of her. Filian is a VTuber who is essentially exclusive to VRChat. I'm not sure what you mean by "proprietary." Nothing is all that niche, especially these days.

By content, I meant worlds, games or avatars. By "proprietary" I ment Udon is not a widely used language a lot of programers know. I also heard it wasn't object oriented which would make learning it especially complicated since most of my experience is with object oriented programing languages.

Stick around here long enough, and you'll meet quite a few world and avatar creators, they can give you better insights than I can, but vrc isn't going anywhere anytime soon if you're looking for a creative outlet. No time like the present to start learning something new.

I feel the same way, I really believe VR will only grow from here, so there's still hope for it, although something new and better might come along if VR grows enough. It's sort of a gamble to wager on VRC, although gained skills and knowledge can be applied to the "new" thing, it wouldn't be a total loss.

Not a whole lot of risk involved, seeing as vrc itself is free. The only time it becomes a money sink is when you decide to start buying and uploading worlds, assets, and avatars.

dont think i activly go public hopping anymore at all... once a week or so maby... but now im in all sorts of diffrent places

just finding that moment yourself is a struggle... id imagine most players who go to publics all the time dont even know they exist

I used to get on on the weekends then see that nobody is on so I closed the game again, then sometimes when someone was on they were in invite only/orange status so I didn’t join them, but nowadays I don’t even get on vrc anymore, I just check the website, see that everyone is offline and dont even start the game

It's easy to fall into a loop of everyone waiting on everyone else. Instead of expecting them to join you, request to join them, even if they are on orange (it's an "ask me" status anyway). Then, if they accept your request, you can express your expectation that they join off of you as well, or make sure they are aware that they can do so, etc.

Yeah that's what I usually do. I ask for an invite and if they accept it I will join but I tell them they could join me too cuz I'm always on blue

If it's a common thing, tell them to join in on you, or that it would make you feel happy if they did, etc. Otherwise, look for more friends who are willing to meet that expectation for you.

VRC collects your age right? Using this data, wouldn't it be helpful to have a feature like Recroom that can help you avoid younger players or maybe even just minors in general?

Of course the downside to that would be a smaller player base of people to play with when it's already difficult enough to find active open instances...

This may help improve the quality of instances though, thus improving the experience.
