like middle of playing RDR2 which is on my secondary drive (admitedly an older SN750) just crapped out and now the computer wont detect it both when plugged into MB and external drive
i have a nice CMR drive which has run flawlessly for almost 3 years, but i want to save its data
only problem is the data i want to save is 450gb and i currently have zero place to put it
both my 1tb movie drives are pretty much full
and the 2tb external disk is 80% full
i have maybe 200gb of free space to store backup data now
now i get to play hot potato with various drives and flash sticks to properly work it
AND something has filled 100gb of data on my main drive
thank you
normally i dont worry but when its time to play hot potato with drives i do
steamapps flares into 130gb instantly
well ssd came back to life
and now i have 4 total drives in this rig
primary drive: 500gb ssd
game drive: 1tb ssd
media drive: 1tb HDD
extra drive: 4TB HDD
yep
copy not move since the only place to move it too is a CMR
my buy list for extra pc stuff is monitor, then 3 SSD's yes one giant one is better but they dont really make affordable 12tb ssd's, then probably some better disk drives for media storage
I'm curious if anyone has a decent wireless PC mic headset to recommend in the 50-100$ range!
I guess ideally I'd have a stand mic but I think I'd prefer an integrated unless it's completely unfeasable.
I don't know, maybe that price range is too low for anything substantial.
Will brass and steel fuse in time? Say a brass screw in a steel piece
i mean most steels and brasses are "mostly" compatible as far as galvanic corrosion is concerned, if you're talking about parts siezing together due to rust/oxidation... but how this is related to PC equipment............
yeah that was wrong i guess, sorry. or was it?
after all the current flow is from electrons wandering around
Stainless steel can be sort of prone to cold welding, but that requires stainless against stainless. You won't see that too often, especially not for something screwed in by hand.
well I for one thought this was the #hardware channel!
More like computer parts not fricken Home Hardware š
no one reads channel descriptions, so unclear
maybe it's a new screw for my steel pc case (it's not but anyway)
is there a way to name the drives as they show up in my library folder
since each drive has a very specific function in my originizational style
c: no change
d: games
E: long term
F: media
thnks:
even steam reads the new name
does this work on specific USB dries as well?
i have an absurd number of 32-64gb flash drives
hah im used to being a meme
my team made this 3 years ago....
and still post it around though usually related to new features to the current project
i know if i try and google these answers ill spend 2 hours trying to find the answer to a question people here can tell me in 30 seconds
given it takes several minutes and time out pages to even load the google search
try good old east europe, https://mediagalaxy.ro/ this is from romania but you can also try moldova, poland, bulgaria and serbia, it might also be that prices are just approximately the same around europe
do you guys think i can burn out my laptop if i try to run UE5.3 it has GTX 1050TI, I7 2.8GHz and 16 RAM, it will be a couple of months untill i can affort a RTX and I want to do something untill then, simple stuff like Meta humans cinematics in small worlds
I had a 1060 6Gb and UE5 was very slow, almost unusable. Maybe you can use it if your laptop is 720p
yea had the same experience with 1660, which struggled especially with groom hair
eventually you can switch the metahuman hair for polyhair, which should perform better (but look worse)
Im still rocking a 1060 6gb in UE5
metahuman hair does cause some hitches indeed when changing lods, still need to look into how to fix it
Yeah just donāt try Niagara fluids, your gpu will have an aneurysm
I'm still even using cascade in some places, although most is niagara by now but yea haven't tried fluids yet
but i dont really have a question today
im simply waiting for SSDI or chirstmas to get me more money to buy more hardware which at that point i will be asking questions
actually my next buy is split between replacing the partly broken office chair or getting a better screen

This is out of box setting
Hello everyone! Is AMD® Ryzen⢠7-6800H
(8-cores; 16-streams)
32GB DDR5
512GB SSD NVMe M.2
15.6ā FullHD IPS 144Hz
GeForceĀ® RTX3060 6GB 140W a good choide for unreal engine 5 to make games like Call of Duty in 2010s? Moreover, is it good for making big projects like GTA 5?
@gilded bluff
I wouldnt say it's particularly good for either of those, no.
For one you'll need a source build, which is over half your storage space alone. For two you're on less powered laptop hardware, along with half the reccomended RAM, and a very low amount of vram
Though hardware isn't your barrier to making those games. You need a fairly large team and millions upon millions of dollars
Let's not forget the Dev budget of GTA 5 is estimated to have been in excess of $130 million
Can I make a shooter game like Call of Duty Modern warfare 2, 3, 4 in 2010s?
on my own?
Again, no. They're all arena shooters, you need a source build for dedicated servers, which is most of your storage space, good netcode, which normally means hiring a senior programmer, and a team of individuals to handle live service at the minimum
If you wanted to make a single player shooter, or a coop shooter on listen servers, then sure, you could do it
But that wouldn't be like Call of Duty :P
it would make offline game that is made on small map row like in Dishonored. The game would last 4-5 or 3-4 hours
I won't make graphics super cool, so, they would be average
An offline game would be fine to make, and you probably wouldn't have much barrier on that hardware. You might feel the lacking vram sometimes though, but if you're not going for super high fidelity graphics it would be fine I imagine
You could definitely make something like a CoD campaign by yourself, but it would be a lot of work.
Yeah, a launcher build is important. It locks you out of anything dedicated server related, but that stuff gets expensive real quick, unless it's for suitably small projects (ones where cheating doesn't really matter for instance, though listen servers fill that role too)
You shouldn't run into many if any problems on that, from your description. If you do, it's time to scale back or upgrade hardware :P
So if I want to make offline game that is made on small map row like in Dishonored. The game would last 4-5 or 3-4 hours and I won't make graphics super cool, so, they would be average, can I make a Call of Duty modern warfare 2,3,4 like in 2010s in UE5? or I should use UE4 instead?
ok
you most likely can't, a company however may succeed (don't feel offended, but the fact that you had to even ask this gives it away)
well, it's been good, but i think it might be time to replace my 980ti... so, rtx4080 or 7900xtx? go! it seems like 4080 is way better for ray tracing and the 7900xtx is slightly better for everything else
if AMD really runs well i would go for the 24GB AMD card...
even tho that you survived till this point with only 6GB VRAM kinda indicates that 16GB would be sufficient for a while... probably depends on your plans
for mostly just coding and occasional gaming, probably wouldn't matter too much. i do very rarely do soemthing that needs GPU mem but definitely not often
i think the main factor is if you are interested in running AI model stuff locally, currently it seems like most stuff doesn't really support AMD "cuda"
yeah definitely not, i'm way too old and crusty to care about that stuff
i think my gpu isnt the only thing struggling with unreal
my cpu and ram are getting hammered too
thanks, i think that's what i'm boomer'ed on and unaware of. CUDA work, new AI crap, ray tracing, anything else?
er, AI just needs VRAM doesn't it (not that I care either way)
no
it uses up to 5 gb of swap
and my cpu for some reason cant be loaded to 100%
yeah... that went well
Hi guys I am having a hard time with the CPU , it is increasing a lot until the point yesterday my computer rebooted. Is there any way to reduce the CPU stress with the settings. I assume the cooling fix is thermal paste and if not then a new cooling system? It is an I7 12700K
let me check, I have no idea -
is this a new system? Is this a new problem?
wondering if it was running unreal fine previously and this just started or if you're just starting with unreal and finding this out of the gates
some kind of h60x
no is not, it will be 2 years eom. If the problem did exist I was not aware really, I just notice because my computer did reboot/block and got a message saying about temperature so had to change o nthe bios
does it look wrong to you? I placed myself and not an expert
I'm still betting its just ventilation. cleaning all vents and fans, making sure your fans are facing the right directions. You want them to create turbulence in the tower, not just push in front and out the back type thing
I cleaned it today , it was very dirty and the message is gone but still not right
and of course making sure some of your fans are facing to bring air in to the tower
you clean the whole tower though right?
why ? aren't supposed to be better?
Get a vacuum on that
superficially the tower, the cooler thorough
the aio fan is still working yeah? You can see it running?
Watercooling is cool
lol
yes it does, it has two actually (one front one behind) and cleaned both
It's just a lot of hot air
and also I do have three fan on the top of the tower
and bios the aio fan is set to run full retard at all times right?
and also working
fan
depending on the mobo and header type it will sometimes default to ecomony type settings. aio fan needs to run 100% at all times
I smother mine in a heavy duty nzxt. this thing could explode and it would be quiter than a light fart
that is the odd thing, the bios shows like the cpu fan is not working :/
what mobo?
tuf gaming z690 plus d2
thought the more expensive asus boards have an AIO header
<- maximus, sexy stuff right there
couldn't be the issue a bad optimisation? when I run other projects cpu is working but not that high. For instance with this small project it is below 80 degrees
well, that will add to it yeah but unreal will not be causing your pc to reboot due to overheating without an existing issue, whether is a real one like hardware failure or superficial like cleaning
first time it wasn't unreal itself , it was me being silly playing my guitar (connected to computer) while UE5 was open. Second time (yesterday) it was just unreal when I was in a BP (it consumes less cpu when actually on viewport)
I don't know how to check if the pump is having issues but still "technically" working. That is an older pump though so maybe
can't you feel it?
lol
I wouldn't
if its overheating might be a bit spicy
like, you could have flow but not enough and with these closed loops you can't tell because they aren't meant to be opened up and checked out
also your mainboard might be able to tell you if the pump is running, if it's powering it
@daring wyvern what's your budget if you need to replace something?
technically they are water fans š
yeah on this boeard you should see the pump in bios I think and this is the correct config fyi
assuming thats all correct already
well not much at this point, a wedding is coming next year so im broke 𤣠but i need to fix it anyhow
so then the one I have is not really the most optimal?
yeah you can see your pump in your bios
does it show the pump being recognized properly
it should at least be able to sense a current flow š¤·
it may show that way just baesed on other settings. I'll peak in the bios manual
ok so it shows up right
sorry what do you mean "right"? shouldnt the cpu fan be like cha2/3/4?
do those 12th gens normally run that hot idle?
well your aio fans should be connected to cpu_fan and cpu-opt according to the manual
i never monitored being honest, I did monitor my graphic card purely for being careful in the beginning but with the pass of time I didn't pay atenttion to temperature until yesterday when I started to have this issue and then I researched at that temperature is a bad sign
sorry does it mean that my setup is correct and the issue is not the fans / cooler , right?
not sure. how many chasis fans do you have connected?
sec
that shows 3 chasis fan headers in use
and how many headers do they connect to in total, theres obviously some doubl-fans there
mmmmmmmmmmm
the only one I can see is the one next to the cpu, i remember when I "build" I had no idea what I was doing and a friend was helping me through a call š¤£
i think the frontal one was one header and then the other two another one
ok, I'd suggest making sure that the aio fan is connected into cpu_fan header like in the image, otherwise its not going to be running with the correct profile and definitely will raise temp
ok mister
thank you very much all for your help, I will try tomorrow as it is very dark now
just a quick one, when you say aoi fan , is this the one closer to the cpu, right?
the one mounted on the CPU is the pump.
the fan would be in the image above'
also looking online that 12th gen i7 is perfectly normal to run that hot. around 80ish
yea under load...
no even idle
oh really?
thats what I'm seeing online anyway.
normal operating temps up to 100 (100 isn't nomrlay depsite whatever they say)
ok
yeah 50 would be a good baseline. 7th gens were a mofo with high temps too. silicon lottery with them. I won the lottery lol idle at 32
not 100 idle that would be like running on the red line by default
atm just with chrome and dc it will be fluctuating between 48 to 60
if you have 80deg in idle, i would ask for a refund
when I open a blank project in uE5 it will between 65 to 80
because then you bought a space heater, not a modern CPU
and when I open mine (>100gb project) is between 70 to 100
if you're getting temps that high idle (even just chrome), something is definitely wrong
48 is not high, the 100 is the max (when I opened my project UE5)
48 idle is fine.
that depends on the room temperature, too
i got ~40deg "idle" while playing minecraft
@steel stream you didn't remove the pump from the CPU when you were checking things out by chance did you (if you haven't yet, don't)
Just one last consideration. If you didn't actually get a heat warning (you should get a bsod for that as well), your PC will either bsod or reboot if the power supply isn't high enough wattage for your setup (or if the power supply is starting to die). 100gb project will run the graphics card, disk and cpu high when loading for sure
no @final pilot I didn't, may I ask why?
i didn't get any blue screen, I actually got it sometimes before but never thought it was temperature so didn't worry much. Usually when I did format my pc it would be better
just checking. if you had, the thermal paste would likely have a very poor seal and from that, very bad heat disipation.
all depends on the processor. 7th gens were notorious for sitting at 80 when true idle. Was entirely dependent on the wafer it was cut from. I don't have much hands on with 12th gen so no idea what issues they may have
my personal is still running 7th gen lol next build will be 14th. Can't wait for that! What an upgrade
oh i see, I thought that would be the only that could cause it
tomorrow I will check how it is connected and also inside the cooler, maybe there is some dust perhaps
The heart of the AI PC, the new processor takes advantage of AI capabilities across operating systems and applications.
Hey guys. I wanted to optimize my unreal editor when it running so that my gpu doesnāt go crazy. Right now even in an empty scene of UE5.3.2 causes my gpu temp to go up and as a result the fans go nuts. Is there a way to calm down my RTX 4080 a little while working in UE?
You can 100% have a curve for your fans, and some allow you to set a curve for the pump
There isn't a reason to run at 100% all the time
Well that's an AIO I'm gonna avoid then š
But yeah, that's not a requirement for every AIO and there are no logical reasons for it
It's cooling the radiator and the fluid inside so if the CPU isn't heating it up there is no reason to run it at 100%
Not to mention water has a lot of thermal capacity so even if there is suddenly a huge load on the cpu and temps increase it's gonna take a while for the fluid to heat up
The pump is commonly ran at 100%
Has Epic said anything about addressing the performance issues with threadripper pro?
These benchmarks are pretty concerning for my team as we just started putting together a new workstation:
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/amd-ryzen-threadripper-7995wx-content-creation-preview/#Game_Dev_Virtual_Production_Unreal_Engine
Hii, these are my specs for the pc i'm thinking of building for Unreal engine, I'm strictly going for DDR4 rn because its very stable and everything is bang for the buck now sales are on, wanted your guys opinion on this and generally I won't be updating this system well until 3-4 years, maybe more even. If there' something that can be improved please let me know.

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X Processor
GIGABYTE B550 Vision D-P (Wi-Fi) Motherboard
Adata XPG Spectrix D50 64GB(32x2) CL18 DDR4 3600MHz
Corsair PRO NH MP600 4TB M.2 NVMe Gen4 Internal SSD
Corsair RM1000e 1000 Watt 80 Plus Gold ATX 3.0 SMPS
thinking of getting a 4060ti 16gb later on or if a better card releases
Btw what do you think there's only 1 gen 4 slot nvme m.2 slot and a gen 3 nvme m.2 slot, out of both which should I install programs on and which drive should I save my projects from which I'll be opening multiple times to work on. I was thinking of installing windows and programs on a gen3 m.2 and all the project work and folders would be in gen4 m.2 the 4tb one. Would my softwares run slower like Unreal engine, 3ds max, substance painter and designer, zbrush? Or would they not be affected at all? because the main project is in gen4 drive
Did you calculate the PSU load in watts?, because maybe 1000w is overkill ( i don't know but maybe)
A 4060ti is a waste of money and severely underpowered for that system
Also, a 1k W PSU is overkill
You also don't have a graphics card listed immediately for that system
Which you need
For those specs you'll be wanting a 4090 or a 4080 or something tbh.
No point going all out and then on the more budget end of gpus
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3mHsVW with a 4080 the estimated wattage is going around 656W. So would an 850w PSU would be fine I guess?
Part List - AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, GeForce RTX 4080, NZXT H5 Flow RGB ATX Mid Tower
This contains all the spec'd out things that I'll be aiming for.
Yes, I was thinking of getting Asus ROG Strix LC 240 RGB or COOLER MASTER MASTERLIQUID ML240L ARGB WHITE EDITION V2
but as per people nzxt was a bit more reliable in terms of software and hardware
no no, I fully spec'd it out, just to check out the wattage count I'm just going with Corsair PRO NH MP600 4TB M.2 NVMe Gen4 Internal SSD
I have my old 1660Ti 6gb which still handle scenes in unreal engine like a champ, You'd be amazed lmao. I got so used to making most out of my cheap budget that I always optimized my assets to max, I can use till then. Plus, I'll be moving my focus to concept art and 3d modelling in a bit. I don't have an immediate need for GPU, it can very well wait a month or two.
And I can't get RAMs in a kit, as they are almost out of stock every time or either different frequencies and CAS latency. Especially , 32x1 or 32x2
got it thanks @iron zenith , and by the way great article on vram deep dive^^ https://landelare.github.io/2023/05/30/vram-deep-dive.html
A deep dive into VRAM, how itās used, and when itās not āenoughā.
Also one more thing since the estimate future wattage will be 656W, would 850W be fine?
What specs are you running?
laura has join the holiday pfp
also i found that theres no appreciable change if you keep older games on an HDD and only the bigger newer ones on the SSD, so i can fill my 4tb spare drive with games
sure it would
is keeping the GPU at 31C while using it at 30% utilization of Vram a good feat?
when its a 12gb 3060
question, why do my HDD's have temp sensors yet apparenly the SSD's dont?
SSD's do have sensors, eventually you have to update whatever tool you use to try to read those
Open hardware monitor is atm the only one
Is cables like sata3 -> Type-c exist? I have external ssd, it uses type c, i want to connect it to sata in motherboard cuz my type c on board already occupied, any ideas?
Im gonna end up with a half dozen hardware monitoring programs aren't i?
Is there a good program that can visualize my cpu core temps? Or at least an average? I know they are there because fan control can detect them
The motherboard also apparently has 2-3 sensors of its own
I get why zero fan mode is used, but it seems to stay off until the gpu hits like 60C
Even at forced 75% speed the noise isnt bad
Especially not with my tv on as well like it usually is
Need no, want to use them because certain programs are causing issues yes.
A net limiter, hardware observer, fan control and task manager on cpu usage windo
Just wondering, my computer wonāt power on all I get is RGB lighting on the motherboard no fans nothing the power switch on the top of the case which is a brand new asus tuf case , when I turn the computer on a little white light in the middle of the power switch comes on thatās not even coming on is it likely is a switch instead of a power supply
Sadly, no, I donāt see anything anywhere
Asus tuf 450 mob
450 something lol
Yes, he used to work great for days ago in mysteriously I try to power it on and nothing except the Rgb lights on the motherboard. The white light on top of the power switch doesnāt even come on oh and by the way, itās one of the flower 650 W power supplies I regret getting it now because itās not an amazing power supply but customer service is on Taiwan. Thereās no US phone number not that Iāve been able to find any way that I feel sad about.
Buyer beware I guess
Just in case it is the power supply I did put a name I forgot a form on their website but theyāre just saying they get a hold of me a couple days. Crossing my fingers a couple days only two.
š
Anyway, do you have any idea which pins on the motherboard you quickly short out to power the computer on in case itās the switch the power switch
Iāve had motherboard they did have lights regarding the status, but this one doesnāt
Theyāre all black
Yeah, I was thinking that if I can find it
Yup
Broke toe the other day and of box is downstairs
lol
Surgery tomorrow š
Ty thatās a hipuge help Iāll give that a try later
š
storage
@iron zenith well atleast 32 gb are enou...
Any thoughts on this particular laptop for UE5? https://www.hp.com/ca-en/shop/product.aspx?id=7x979ua&opt=abl&sel=ntb
looks fine
its overkill
that is a very unassuming laptop with specs like that damn
Is forcing my fans to run at 75-100% speed bad or just a noisy choice?
noisy choice
that costs more than a 4080 and a decent rig combined....
technically for that i could get my current rig and a 4090 for that much
How does Discord streaming a display capture/window if you have multiple GPUs - for example, the monitor displaying DISCORD is running on an iGPU but you are capturing from another monitor that is using a PCI-E GPU?
what your monitor displays is not really whats actually being rendered by the computer
especially if you have a gpu and are plugged into the MB
Random question - trying to diagnose USB Disconnecting sound, but USBLogView is empty and nothing pops up in Device Manager
ive heard that sometimes too, usually ive had it from bumping a usb connector/drive that is a bit worn and doesnt connect fully
Device Manager shows the only recent events are - this "Connection to the Windows Metadata and Internet Services (WMIS) could not be established. "
Shouldn't that show up in USBLogView?
no clue
that looks more like it might be a software issue
i know i still get issues with my wifi card and telling it to restart fixes the problem
idk how much is hardware, software, or the really crappy 400+ ping the network has
Goddamn there HAS to be a way to pinpoint when windows plays a sound, I don't just want to disable it
This is the only thing I could think of
god you are my hero - I saw one of the hubs flashing - is there a reason it didn't show up in usbview log?
yeah my old main desktop has 64 GB so I was worried about that.
that is canadian dollars so I don't think that is quite the same. Our GPU prices are much higher in numbers
8 core cpu. I agree. I feel 64 GB is good for 4 cores so 8 cores this is kinda nuts eh?
damn
i've been spoiled with 64 GB since 2016 lmfao
everything else about the laptop is amazing tho damn
they don't offer 64 gb
yeah really why!
I did see a great one but it's double the price
4090 with 16 gb vram, 64 gb system ram, etc
some huge cpu
yeah I know
basically a 2070 ti
3070
from what I heard
or I forget maybe a bit better than that. But I really like vram
16 gb is better than 8
oh no 3090 ti wow wow wow lmfao
but less vram
do they still make tablets with USB ports in the side or is everything switched to USB-c
hi, anyone know what type of power supply should you buy? because there's alot of it but idk what to lookout for
IMO this is easy. What GPU do u have? Look up the specs, it will say what is the recommended wattage. Get a high-quality PSU of that wattage.
chances are you don't have a million hard disks or anything fancy and it will be the right choice.
it will be the right choice, no matter if you have lots of hard disks or not
as long as you buy a quality PSU the recommendation from the GPU manufactor is fine
oh ok. can i just get the high quality wattage regardless? will it harm anything?
wattage? right?
It will not harm anything to have more wattage. It can help with cleaner power delivery, as coil whine goes hand in hand with getting near the limits of the PSU.
Brand name is important tho. Do a quick google search for the best PSU brands and only buy from them.
ok thanks! so all i need to lookout for wattage and brand.
Yes. Within the brand there will be like different tiers of product perhaps. There are efficiency ratings like 80 bronze or whatever but generally sticking with a good brand is enough these days
just wondering, i couldnt find anything bigger than 700w. is 700w the cap? so im gonna assume thats the highest and i will continue my search from there?
oh nvm, there's 850w š ok im bad at this. sorry!! haha
oh wow 2000watts
mind me asking, what's the watts you used in your PC?
ok from the looks of it, i guess the most popular brand PSU is corsair.
ok i just googled the best PSU, they said it is corsair CS450 but is only 450watts .... sorry just confused š
I have a 3070 and a 650 W corsair psu
from the nvidia website for the 3070:
also make sure ur psu has the approriate connectors but if you get a name brand one with the right wattage it most likely will have the right connectors
those are the specs for the 3070 ti and 3070 respectively
Some cards by third-parties will have different specs but usually not much different
ahh i see. ok thanks!! you just gave me a clue haha. because im using 4060 that means i have to get a higher Wattage. probably 750w
ahh okok noted! thanks
the specs for the 4060 are listed on the nvidia website, see here. you only need 550 W.
for th e4060
oh so i was right! because i keep googling and googling and most of the results said that i shouldnt need more than 650w for 4060! i guess i will take yours as a confirmation. I was not expected it to be lower than 700w š
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
no problem
yea but i would pick a seasonic, they are usually cheaper than corsair
and chances are high that the corsair is actually a seasonic with a corsair branding
e.g. seasonic focus gm-650
oh ok i will search that brand! thank you!!
corsair, seasonic, a few others... get whichever is the best value at the moment for where it is most convenient for you to buy it.
man I am scratching my head hard wondering if I can live with 32 GB ram for UE5 in a laptop, which would not be the only machine I have but just the portable one... Laura was pretty stern about needing 64 GB and that is an instinct I share but I am so tempted to save like $3k and get a machine with 32 gb lmfao
anyone use an oled monitor for development?
I have one but idk if I should do work on it or just game. I don't know how much difference it would make for burn in
what would be the problem any monitor is fine
btw yeah my project definitely could use more than 32 GB š¦
ahhh I see. Consider any electronic device, especially a monitor, a consumable item. Use it as you need to. If burn-in is an issue for your model take some precautions but just do what you need to.
I just got a G8 oled and I want to take precautions before I start using it, after I'm certain I did everything that can slow down the burn in process I can forget about it and use the monitor for productivity
I used to get paranoid about this stuff all the time, but in my experience my concerns are always overshadowed by some other real-world implications. The product breaks, becomes obsolete, or I just move on before it ever becomes an issue.
that is just some rando reddit post
ok now for a good question. Two laptops, both have 64 GB ram. The same price, everything basically the same but the choice is this:
- i9-13900H: 6 P-cores 8 E-cores + 4090 16GB vram
OR - i9-13980HX: 8 P-cores 16 E-cores + 4080 12GB vram
I almost wanna opt for the cpu
I have a ue5 project that I am working on. It's basically just for ue5.
To be able to do a lot of dev work, maybe not with like always peak FPS/epic quality, but still everyday dev work. And with the CPU options I might actually package/compile on it lmfao
Also using tortoise-tts for generating AI voice clips so the extra vram is nice on the 4090
Can generate longer voice clips that way š
yeah good call
12 gb is enough vram for a laptop
plus with cooling performance who knows if the 4090 is worth it
thank you lmao
I overthink stuff too much
oh ok turns out I bought an old celeron netbook for $5
yes
the intel igpu will handle it well
shared 4 GB of system ram!!
Narrator: It was not enough for BioShock.
that was weird I am watching a video and at precisely the moment I clicked on this channel and saw ur gif the video played a rimshot sound effect

I linked the exact time I was at lmfao so weird
yeah I know but it seems that the most common models that have what we need are gaming laptops
I would much prefer no rgb and stuff but whatever
I've noticed most gaming laptops have way way way too little ram lmfao
for me it comes down to local availability. I am in canada and like it just seems hard to find specific models so I am just looking at what is locally value-priced
but actually yeah that other one with the monster intel cpu was pretty good. I would prefer a new ryzen tho for power efficiency and just normal cores not weird ones lmfao
but but but 4nm!!
is it really bad my main SSD is at 50C? sentinel has that drive flagged for poor health
Is the red flag simply from the temp?
seems too and idk why it says 79% health
it is because of where u plugged it in on ur pc likely, or just the order that ur system indexed the drives
nothing seems to explain why its 79%
it was at 100% yesterday
the health history only goes back to yesterday but has somehow been 79% the entire time? i really dont think id miss that
its fill? its got 100gb+ free
I use a RAID-0 array made with two 12 year old hard disks on one of my PCs... would hate to know their health status
This raid array holds ue source and the project and packages from lmfao
my raw storage HDD has a long up time:
my main SSD has handled a lot of data:
how in the world have i written that much to a 500gb drive
hi guys, I just got a corsair h60x in the end . Wow temperature is always below 70 in the editor with ultra, many thansk for your help really appreciate it !
no no no lmfao it's just the build server. The project/source control are on a different machine.
it is totally inadequate as a build machine. 16 GB ram. 4 cores @ 3.5 Ghz... said raid array. But somehow it squeaks by with lots of garbage collection when compiling shaders lmfao
i think lexar is fine for lower budget yeah
yeah im mainly concerned is it going to crap out because of shitty quality, really im just looking for SSD speeds and high capacity and the lexar 4tb ssd is in budget
checkout adata, they are decent for lower budget
You just really want to make sure your SSD has a DRAM controller tbh
So you can download more RAM? š
pretty much any ssd has that
the question is how large it is, and if it's covering your usual write loads
then they would never achieve any good results tho!? (i mean write speeds close to what their interface is capable of)
I bought a cheapie 12TB HDD platter type. Cool thing is, i can always tell when it is accessing/working since i can hear it (which i like). sad thing is, that is from 15 feet away :/
Thanks to you I've decided to check my own stuff, u know, like if something is writing excessive amounts for no reason.
Ended up deleting asus bloat)
Thanks. I've ditched armoury crate in favor of g-helper. now reading about this wtfpbt business and... this is some scary BS, ngl)
the only reason i've installed armoury crate in a first place is cuz I got me shiny new laptop, so, I wanted to check what's it all about. In retrospective, I should have not bothered.
well the new connection came in:
Context: Rural Texas
in 25MB (not Mb) it says "very fast"
its like 10x faster than what we had for about the same price
yeah im at 3mb atm
which is vastly better than 0.3
which means a gb takes 12 minutes to download as opposed to 2 hours
Assuming weāre not talking bandwidth
I know you programmers don't like to interact irl and stuff
but escaping to Mars is kinda overkill, ain't it?))
Hey all! Putting feelers out to see if anyone has had any awesome, decent or horrible experiences with Unreal and a spec'd out macbook pro m3 max or similar just utilizing sequencer for cinematics and motion graphics. I'm being offered one by my company and they're pushing for more labor intensive 3D render work. I've been just on my 2019 razer til now doing mograph stuff within sequencer and C4D. Also weighing out the possibility of Mac studios if I'll be given one over the macbooks. While I'll be eventually building out my own pc. I'm avoiding another pc laptop as they're great for portable gaming the life span just gets smoked by Mac for professional use in my past experiences. But that was before I was using unreal š¤·āāļø
better screen or more storage, which is the better buy? im getting both eventually but which first? pricing is effectively the same
Youāve been on a shopping spree lol
I am trying to decide on whether I should get a 4080 or a 7900 XTX for UE5, what would you guys recommend?
Well, I also plan on using it for gaming as wellā¦
But Iād be paying about 1600 for an XTX and 2000 for a 4080
This is Australian prices
That is one of the factors for leaning towards it along with it being cheaper.
This is the time of year i usually get large amounts of money
Usually about 2/3 of my yearly income is in December
Being able to use the GPU for ML easily is something I would pay more than $400 for. Nvidia wins every time if you EVER want to do ML.
More storage 100%
CUDA is king in ML world
I have never seen someone with an AMD card have a good time lmfao* (with ML)
is it bad to get a device like a phone down to like 10C
my phone was overheating and actually displayed a thermal warning so i sat it on a freezer pack
im actually curious if theres issues with running active cooling around a desktop, like i have welding and HVAC training, based on calcs from the desktops own sensors i could build a compressor unit that would chill the physical case of the computer to 8C and the surrounding air to about 13C
Phones are generally designed to handle -35C or so with no issues, else they wouldnāt work very well in the cold. As for chilling your entire PC that low, itās prly not a good idea. Look at the recommended operating temp specs of your parts before you damage something
The only real danger of running an entire pc very cold is condensation. If you can eliminate the risk of condensation, then super chilling the whole pc can be pretty good
Lots of people trying to do insane overclocks cool their CPU with liquid nitrogen, but as a consequence, they have to waterproof the motherboard with something
As for running a compressor unit as you describe, don't, it's a massive waste of energy for 0 gain. You're not a competitive overclocker, and if you were there's farrrr cheaper and better methods
I was thinking SSDs and such that have certain temp requirements. Itās one thing to use directed cooling like AIOs and another to make it snow in your case š
What type of improvement will I experience in UE going from a SATA SSD to an NVMe?
Minimal, probably
actually i have a few spare compressors from some minifridges, and building a dehydration system into the external cooling case isnt that hard, ive done that defore
ML? Not sure what you are referring to here.
Sorry. Machine Learning. Not the greatest term to use I should say generative AI or something
Machine Learning is easier than trying to figure out what ML meant
ML is a pretty common acronym for machine learning, in tech
Maybe itās diff down under tho š
Can't really say, I'm just not deeply invested into machine learning stuff
Rocm is getting actually useful but Nvidia is still faster for ML
good to know. It would be nice to have options like Laura says
It's not about fast enough. It's about wasting real world human time trying to get it to work and it ultimately not working so... worth way way way more than $400/
I have seen a guy go through a whole months-long ordeal. Getting a radeon. thinking it didnt work with his pc. but the RMA found nothing wrong, he's stuck with it. Finally gets it working, it was some weird thing. Now he tries to get the things he wants working. Supposedly they should. Nope they don't. He doesn't need to game, he just wanted to support AMD cause he is a weird fanboy but long story short this guy is a computer friggin engineer by profession and couldn't get AMD to work with the ML thingies he wanted them to. I think he just uses remote compute rn.
granted this was on Linux too, because, well, fanboy
aaaand that concludes my anti-AMD FUD for the day lmfao sorry.
speaking of AMD should I get this laptop? LMAO
I wonder if 8 cores is enough tho ugh
I could opt for a 4060 instead of 4070 and get an intel with 8P and 8E cores
that is very true yes. For me, I just can't ignore the ML side. I use it for gamedev, to generate dialogue locally.
the legion pro is an popular choice here
big question is core count vs 4070
i would go for the 4070
hmmm yeah
city sample says 12 cores tho lmfao
i use tortoise-tts to generate audio
afaik nobody has nicely ported it to AMD-ish stuff. I'm no expert I need it to work easily lmfao
ugh this is my thought too but the 4070 is better
like it is noticeable apparently
the 8 extra cores are e-cores, so meh
this is truly a tough choice. basically the same price
I dunno about that
"crap" being same performance as a 3070?
a laptop 4060 is even worse
I use a 3070 as my main dev machine lmfao
I use a 3060 12 GB on my second machine and I would hate it with 8 GB
3070 is ok with 8 GB cause it has a bit extrajuice ugh
apparently with the 40 series the power limit makes basically no difference. IIRC this is a high-power one anyway
*no difference for 4060 and 4070
above that, it does make a diff
there is some voltage lock that prevents it from using more power even if requested
yeah TBH the CPU never becomes a concern/bottleneck for me at the moment. But, the city sample saying 12 cores worries me for when I add more features to my project
For running the models most definitely not worth it, would go with the cheaper option
But for training it matters a lot, it's a difference between training a month or 2 months
GT code?
ah ok thanks
lmao... yeah just rent one
I could get a 4090 laptop and mine on it
š
mine cryptocoinkitties or something
watever the new nft thing is
money cash money
I am joking
lmfao
I would mine lines of dialogue for my game
from tortoise-tts
Amd is a bit of a pain to setup for ML
Only recently it has been actually even supported on Windows
But even at work all our ML machines (including my personal) are running Nvidia's GPUs, because it just works, no some obscure setup required
Yeah I was pointing out that it was possible to use Amd but it is a pain
that is exactly my experience. I don't have time to mess around to be an AMD fanboy
For anything serious it's either 4090s or professional accelerators
Wouldn't bother with anything less if you are working with ML seriously, by that I mean training
yes true I only do inferencing
well... for cinebench
how much practical use do you have while working daily in UE? pretty much none imho
especially if your main workstation is a desktop
what is the go to gpu for unreal now?
if that's what he is getting the laptop for...
4090
my main system is a desktop with a 6700k lmao the laptop would be my new main system and I could work from the library and the pre-school while my daughter plays.
Yeah the laptop would just be everyday general dev/design work. I'm a solo dev for now so I touch everything.
I don't compile the engine much tho. It would be nice that that is quick but I do it once every engine version.
I might just work off the launcher build on the laptop too
unless I turn it into my packaging machine lmao
my changes have been tiny so far and take like 4 minutes to compile at most I bet I never noticed it
lol random number
i do not even recollect
that was gonna be what I said at first
but I couldn't be certain
Also sometimes I clean my workspace
so then I recompile more I dunno
it's not an issue currently but the engine builds yeah take a while on my old 2700k š
yes. 2700k not 12700
I think the 4070 will make my everyday life smoother than the 8 extra e cores. As much as I really do want those extra cores. I sometimes do other c++ work building other software so that would be nice ugh...
this is truly a dilemna. Game designers take note. Tough decisions
they should make a game
u just have to choose between two PC and u gotta use it for the next level
yeah and 8 is already double my best PC
at highger clock speed
The real dilemna is that this is kinda a pointless purchase lmao. what am I doing. do I need a laptop?
I have no room for an extra desktop, and even if I did I would actually rather have a small portable machine. I get so jealous when epic does presentations on laptops with realtime in-engine stuff
wat really how was it crap?
I took ur advice and found one which has been upgraded to 64 GB already lmao
in which way? do u remember the specs
my desktop is 7 years old soooo this might be good for me lmao
was it the one with 48 GB ram?
I can see that being big I;m glad I checked cause I easily need 40+
I also need to remove the hard references to all 66 metahumans because that hits the page file hard on my machine with 16 GB of ram lmao
I digress
I convinced myself not to by any laptop but the company got back to me confirming the machine is brand new but upgraded and now I'm tmepted again
yeah I really need to opt for that 4070 I think
with 64 GB of ram I think it would definitely be better than my main rig
ohhh ok wat do u do all day?
oh ok
yeah if I was strictly doing visual studio work no question I would go for that intel. 4060 would be too much. I wouldn't get this lmao
yeah u could probably safely shut it off
use igpu
yeaaah I have this old lenovo laptop that has integraed intel gpu and amd discrete gpy
and both gpu perform essentially the same it is stupid
i had a toshiba laptop once, it was super high end at the time and still works like 15 years later
dont use it anymore but still
when the monitor was down it was prolly thicker than 5cm tho
that was the last good laptop i ever bought that didnt turn pretty much unusable after a year
the need to make em as thin as paper gives a lot of the thermal problems and often near impossible to open it up to repaste gpu/cpu
Yeah I dunno it's a case by case thing. Of course some laptops will overheat and be trash, and all gaming laptops will need lots of fans and cooling and there are side-effects to that: dust, noise, etc. But if you want a portable machine with desktop performance what choice is there? lmao
Just have fixed machines š
wdym? as in big desktops? I already do and I don't wanna e-waste them. I figure I will keep my eyes out for a good deal on a legion 7 with like 16 AMD cores, a 4080, then upgrade the ram to 64 GB and get an ssd. That will for sure be way better than my best desktop so I won't feel bad about jet engine fan noise.
yeah I heard about that with the intel
yeah on the specific model legion I am looking at, the intel is able to be wrangled cooler I guess allegedly
13900hk
the legion is pretty badass. the pro 7 model with 4080 has legit cooling
for a laptop
I have a weird issue
My 4000D tends to vibrate randomly. At first I thought it was fan bearings going because adjusting fan speeds up and down would somehow fix it, but itās the case lid. Adjusting the screw tightness, or lately just using a slight tap fixes it
Iām thinking maybe itās due to positive or negative pressure? š¤·āāļø
I have a weird fan on my desktop that sounds like a rough bearing. Opening and closing the front panel kinda "slams" it into being quiet. Lmao... might still be a fan on urs too.
sup guys. do you guys have any MSI psu ones?
MSI is cheap now but the reviews are 50/50 so im not sure if its reliable.
specifically msi a850gl
Maybe one of the case fans š¤·āāļø
yeah for me I know exactly which one it is. When it gets colder it especially acts up.
I had no idea they sold PSU. if the reviews are mixed, what is making you consider it? Just price? The PSU is the last thing to cheap out on. If everything else is cheap then go for it lmao.
By that I mean: if u don't care if ur mobo, cpu, ram, gpu, and ssd all get taken out at once by a bad psu then go for it.
But at the same time chances are you'd be fine so take a risk at your own judgement
All these companies try to branch out and make things theyāre not necessarily good at
i have an MSI PSU and it seems to work fine
the a1000g
hello guys I have another question:
Is AMD® Ryzen⢠7-7735HS
(8-cores; 16-streams)
Ram 16GB DDR5
Ssd 512GB SSD NVMe M.2
15.6ā FullHD IPS 144Hz
GeForceĀ® RTX4060 8GB 140W good enough to run unreal engine's latest versions like 5.3 smoothly and good?
I work with much weaker hardware so you should be somewhat fine for now @gilded bluff
what is your hardware characteristics? And does it run unreal engine 5.3 smoothly?
I need a hardware to make a 4-5 hour game like dishonored 1 or call of duty modern warfare old 2010s series or black ops series. Is it good hardware to make that game?
4500u 15gb ram and things , no
So I can not run ue 5.3 smoothly with my hardware?
I mean 16 will work like it should complete the tasks just way slower
AMD® Ryzen⢠7-6800H
(8-cores; 16-threads)
32GB DDR5
512GB SSD NVMe M.2
15.6ā FullHD IPS 144Hz
GeForceĀ® RTX3060 6GB 140W is it good?
If it's a gaming laptop tho the ram should be upgradable
its asus tuf gamming a15
Eh the tuf lineup is hit or miss
Legion 5 is what you should look at
For price/perf price/quality sweetspot
hre is a nother option AMD® Ryzen⢠7-6800H
(8-cores; 16-threads)
32GB DDR5
512GB SSD NVMe M.2
15.6ā FullHD IPS 144Hz
GeForceĀ® RTX3070 8GB 140W
Also a desktop will always be better but if you strictly need a laptop just ignore this
ok
which characteristics should I have to run UE 5.3?
Atleast a 6 modern core cpu , bare minimum 16gb tho 32gb highly recommended, storage 256gb but more ( 1 TB) is very highly recommended and a gpu with atleast 6 gb vram tho again more are highly recommended
what if I will change 16gb ddr5 ram to 32 gb ddr5?
AMD® Ryzen⢠7-7735HS
(8-cores; 16-streams)
Ram 32GB DDR5
Ssd 512GB SSD NVMe M.2
15.6ā FullHD IPS 144Hz
GeForceĀ® RTX4060 8GB 140W should be good
yes
I need so that I can move from one place into another
and my budget is not very high
Ye this too
I want to make a game like a dishonored 1 or call of duty modern warfare old 2010s series or black ops series. Is it good hardware to make that game?
Like the game will be 4-5 hours gameplay and it will look like call of duty black ops or modern warfare series in 2010s but with better graphics like in gta 5
graphics will be not ultra realistic but will be good to watch, simple ai, and simple locations and scenes
@gilded bluff are you working alone?
yes
your project scope should be covered in theory by that laptop
yes
unless you turn on unnecessary settings and use extremely high quality objects & textures
can that hardware run unreal engine 5.3? not smoothly but still with 30-40 fps on basics?
ok
š„
do i need to plug in the fan cables into the mobo?
because the cables on the fans have little tabs on them that stop them from fitting into the other ports
yes, the fan cable can onlt fit into one type of port
that's what those little tabs are for
to force you into the right port
itās the right port, says it in the manual. but when i try to plug one in the port beside the motherboard power, the tabs hit the 24pin connector not letting it go in
there is 2 ports on the bottom left of the board, and i canāt fit 2 cables in there either because of the tabs. i have 4 fans btw
i donāt have any fans connected to the mobo atm, and the fans are running fine. will this damage anything in the long term?
no it wont damage anything
the advantage of them connected to the mainboard is just that the mainboard can run them at slower speed when they aren't required
How necessary is a heat sink on an m.2 ssd, had to remove the one covering the empty m.2 slot on my board, got the ssd installed and realized Iām not going to be able to get the cover installed again without most likely pulling the gpu to give me more working room
The memory cells like it warm. But the controller will heat throttle. If you bought it for 7 gbps speeds, it won't get them.
I got the heatsink installed I didnāt think itād be an issue as itās only a team group mp34, however I figured if it was on the board before it should probably go back on with the drive installed
jfc, why has amd always hired high school students for their gpu driver suite. it was a problem with their company in like 2003 and it's still a problem today. i decided to let myself try and stray from nvidia after 10 years of normal reliable nvidia service... and boom, today it's radeon can't fkg use a portrait oriented monitor. the mouse cursor won't display in the correct location. seriouslyyyyyyyyyyyy
but get this, the "fix" is... turn on cursor pointer trails in windows
lol if i try to screen cap it, the screen cap program records the cursor in the correct location
Boomer recording mode engage
lol, this is why I resist switching back to AMD. I also havenāt had one of their cards or cpus in a decade, just donāt trust the brand
this must be at least the 10th gpu i've bought in my 25 years of building junk, think it's my third AMD, pretty sure it will be the last one me or anyone within earshot of me ever buys lol.
the nvidia tax now also applies to correctly displayed mouse cursors š
Ok it is D-Day. I have two choices to make: CPU and GPU (for laptop)
CPU:
Ryzen 9 7945HX (16 cores, 32 threads) ~5.4 GHz
vs.
Core i9-13900HX (8 P cores, 16 E-cores, 32 threads total) ~5.4 GHz
GPU: 4080 12 GB vs 4090 16 GB. I suspect that 4090 might not be worth the added cost due to power limiatations. I'll look into that now.
Thoughts?
lmfao
the big Q for me remains the fake 4090 vs fake 4080
I am concerned that the 4090 will be too limited by power
I am choosing the AMD cpu, which gives less room for the gpu to have power
or maybe it's worth choosing the intel if I go 4090 ugh
and actually I need to keep in mind this is based off people reviewing them for actual gaming performance, not unreal engine work
in-editor is another beast so hmmm
probably no power gains with the intel in-editor
It does seem that the vram is the only benefit in the end
yeaaah i am hearing very mixed reports about this specific laptop with the amd vs intel cpu
some say the intel is better/cooler
I actually want things t obe efficient and cool so they can like run for a while
legion pro 7
just in case u needed the reference point as it does change things. Each laptop's cooling and chassis and power specs are different so like yeah
I didn't expect u to know what it was
but when u look at benchmarks
thank you for that. That is my kinda concern lmao. I like to be able to have apps assume 16 cores is 32 threads and they all are the same lmfao I dunno I am old
At the same time, I love intel if anything I am an intel fanboy
the laptop fake-4090 has 16 GB
the laptop 4090 is not the same as the desktop 4090. it is completely different thing
Yeah well my new 7900 xtx is large enough to break a mouse cursor so there
i can't believe that the issue is there for an year... that seems so major and "trivial" in the scope of an gpu driver
guess the mousetrail "fixes" it because it switches to software cursor?!
AGH ryzen or intel I am like about to click. for some reason I can get the intel cheaper
ok I bought the intel lmfao
saved like $300 so I cna buy more ram
Recommended pre-builts for dev work? Mostly focused around scripting/programming.
I don't think I've ever seen a pre built that hits the criteria for dev work, without it also being around $2000 more expensive than it needs to be
And if you want something for super dev work like a threadripper, even more luck to you
lenovo has some interesting workstations, tho
Recommended specs/components then?
Was thinking baseline:
i7
30 series
32 GB Ram
As a minimum
avoid 4060, otherwise the GPU is mainly a vram/performance/price tradeoff
and for i7 i would say at least 12th gen
Is the RTX 4060 ti 16gb worth it?
why?
considering I'm using a gtx 1050 ti.......
so what would be better?
considering I'm using a gtx 1050 ti
tell me some nvidia model
lol
i'm just a poor boy
Considering that I want and can afford a 4060ti 16gb, which nvidia option would be better in this price range?
What less VRAM will limit me?
well, it would limit your video memory obviously
so amount/resolution of textures/meshes loaded onto it
which can be a deal breaker when developing
I want to play the newest games without performance problems with good graphics quality (not necessarily at maximum), and I also want to develop great large levels such as landscapes with high foliage density, or cities with a large amount of props
then you dont have a choice
and my budget is more or less the price of an rtx 4060ti 16gb
3060 12 GB (NOT 8!) is a decent card for the money. If you wanna cheap out, go for a deal on a 30 series for sure.
indeed, but the performance is also questionable... it's more like a compromise if you need the VRAM (which is why i rather suggested the 3080 12GB, which should almost play in the price range of a 4060TI)
3080 must be 16 GB I think you typoed.
Yeah true if you donāt need the cuda stuff really there is no reason to go nvidia for value buys.
what if he has an screen in portrait mode tho? š
Donāt ask me I took my last ATI card out of service a few months back. From pre-rebrand.
Now I have in service: 980, 3060 12G, 3070
980 is not so much in service as it is installed in an old Core2Duo machine that runs Linux and canāt boot an unreal game because the cpu is too old lmao.
RTX 4070 12gb, it is worth it?
.
IMO, you either get something that works without lots of performance, or you go all out. When talking about gamedev there is no reason to go in the middle ground and spend more money than you need to.
So ask yourself. Do you just need to be able to make the game, and then performance testing can be done on other machines? In that case go for the best value. ATM, on the nvidia side, I think the 3060 12 GB is the best bang for buck while squeaking in as good enough for UE5. Radeon side has even better value options if u don't care about cuda cores.
Or, do you want the absolute best possible performance so that you can gauge that, or in order to present the project or do anything else that requires highest real-time fidelity? Then yeah u gotta get a 4090 no choice. Don't go in between unless there is a compelling sale or spcial reason or opportunity. my 2 cents.
I want to play the newest games without performance problems with good graphics quality (not necessarily at maximum), and I also want to develop great large levels such as landscapes with high foliage density, or cities with a large amount of props
4080 would prolly work too for that high end need
this just screams for video memory
nah
why not?
or vulkan is super bad compared to directx... i have a small island with roughly 50 buildings and can't even load all sublevels because it would run out of video memory)
thats no't typical
be aware that in development EVERYTHING is loaded, and not just what is rendered
it shouldn't crash/run out of memory unless there is a problem
are you using world partition?
no
well it crashes because i'm on linux which doesn't support swapping to host memory... on windows it would do that, which tanks performance a lot
that's not the issue
sometimes the editor in windows will still mess up and crash the gpu
it's not perfect. more vram won't solve that
point is, 12GB videoe memory are filled quick on a non optimized level
so is 24 GB
yea but 24GB gives you way more room to play with
24 GB definitely gives you more room
but there are better ways to manage it if budget is a concern
and it will still crash
so you will still have to manage it
hence the 3090/4090 recommendation is primary because of the video memory, performance wise often a 3070/3080 will do just fine
3060 12 GB will do just fine
in all cases
unless you need high performance in large scenes
it will still let you develop those large scenes
tbh 3060 12 GB plays most games at 1080p max settings 60 hz
just fine
3060*
yeah look into that option
i don;t know about those red cards
better dead than red
not u
LMFAO
lmfao
yeah for real tho laura is right if budget is a concern, get the best value radeon card that is comparable to the 3060-ish
hoonestly 3060 is friggin fine lmao
in my experience, since the 3060 is still a "new" sku it hasn't been replaced yet, you can get great deals on it new compared to 40 series
or there are a TON of 3060 ex mining gpus out there still
well maybe not still but a year ago there was. The sellers didn't want to flood the market so they would trickle them in on fb marketplace and stuff
it was wild to watch lmao
u could meet up with someone at a momen'ts notice and get a 30 series card at a gas station for a couple hundred bucks
hello guys. they didnt display the height but it said it can fit in 12 HDD stacking up
but they didnt fully display the height. is the height really tall?
but now that i think about it, i dont think people really need 12 HDD slots
anyone here uses 12 HDD slots?
sorry i talk too much š¦ im just lost. sorry sorry š
yea. no one uses HDD anyway. And SDD just 3-4 will be enough
you're right hahaha
thanks btw!
you kinda saved me 150 bucks
Some scenes take ages to load, esp on first startup
I have 16GB ram
8GB vram on the rtx 3070
Ryzen 7 5800 processor
Any budget suggestions for upgrade? This sc is under load when loading scenes
so it is compiling shaders? you can only beat that with more cores
well https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/gaming-cases/proart/proart-pa602/ asus proArt for creator
yea, but with 4.6GHz they are already pretty quick
a budget option would be getting an used 5950x
still, that cpu isn't super old
all his cores are clocked to max speed in the screenshot, which indicates 100% load on them
ye mb
ye imma try ty
During load or idle?
so I upgrade to 32?
2 x 8
wouldnt that overdo it?
oh damn wtf
do I need to match the mhz speed with the 2x8?
you can buy faster ones
still chances are that in total they will clock slower (my experience with matching different sets while still having dual channel)
Should I put the 2x16 in 1-3 / 2-4 or does it not matter if all slots are occupied?
128GB
just dont buy GSkill š
Can a ram hardware failure corrupt my ue project?
ok will upgrade after release
XD
call me a maniac, but I dont use source control
slows down my pc too much
P4v did quite a number
on ue5, not ue4 somehow
do you recommend git?
I want something with easy UI
preferrably
ah
mod inc
projects are only 6 months so I'm taking the risk
and the extra ssd space
If my pc crashes in a few months due to ram I'll come by again
incremental backups are better than nothing
If my pc corrupts b4 release I'll give you a free steam key
of the game that got postponed bc someone didnt use source control x)
this feels good š Use to take 1.5 hours on my 5900x. Building 5.3 on 7970x
========== Rebuild completed at 6:57 AM and took 11:33.115 minutes ==========
rebuild != build
isn't rebuild a clean and build?
I hope you aren't rebuilding everytime š
i'm glad that you are around to fix all the BS that i assume xD
hey have someone tested DDR5 ram vs DDR4 ram for Unreal and Blender?
hmmm the more I see the more i notice that it's not proven that DDR5 speed increase gives you a significant boost versus DDR4...
specifically on 3D modelling or rendering heavy workloads
well in my country (France) for prebuilts the price difference is crazy
why please? could you elaborate?
ytes i know that but I could pick either one of those
well my biggest problem would be paying multiple times and that's (maybe I'm just dumb at looking) only possible if i buy a prebuilt
because honestly I would likely built it myself if I could
well I would have a budget of around 1500ā¬, can I built something in pc partpicker and asking pour opinion, because well like you said prebuilt sucks and I would like to avoid it if possible and I'll look into more options if i can pay multiple times
yes exactly like a payment in x12 times would be the best
but to be honest I never did it before....
I'm buying a new one from scratch because my old laptop died and I need one and was planning to upgrade anyway...
that was my initial plan and I already planned to do exactly that, but well my PC died suddenly, it was the board and more precisely I owned a laptop. So the problem is that I would need a pc relatively fast... so well paying multiple times would be my only viable and I really hate to do it... Right now I use the PC of my sister.
yeah it works with the barebone parts already tried that too on an firends pc
I saw that it only lets it pay 4 times and not x12 but maybe I'm just bad at looking
that would be roughly something that i would like to do https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/rb6G28
Part List - AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, GeForce RTX 4070, Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower

not only but mainly it would also include Blender, Video editing, some light gaming, and coding
well that's why i used only two kits of 4 , if I would need the 64 gig i would upgrade two months from now
650 Watt AZZA PSAZ (80+ Bronze) that bronze powersupply is shuddering to me of the prebuilt one
really? oh okay i could include 64 gig of ram but it would be a bit more pricey but thanks for the tip
no
I think that PSU needs more Zs in the name.
lol
It's like, the more zs you put one plzzzzzzzzzzzz the more impactful it is, right?
so swapping the ram would be around the same price as the prebuilt one
but why is 64 gig of ram so important? I used with my laptop a mere 16 and it.... worked, so I thought that 32 gig would be plenty enough
16gb is fine if you want to make pacman. In basic.
true
i just bought 64 gb ram today š
if you want nas like think you may think https://45homelab.com/ hl15
The homelab machine of the future!
so should I lower my CPU? or just going for 64 gigs of ram
well to be honest being in Unrela will be my main activity and gaming would be like old games and such so I shouldn't need to worry about that (FF14 for example)
is the 64 gig of ram really spend on just Unreal and not like opening blender , substance painter and such? Because i never run into an actual scenario that would need more then like around 24 gigs of ram
an overall cheaper build CPU wise?
humm well okay you convinced me thanks!
Hi guys, what anti virus would you guys recommend? All of them are soo pricey so I wanna be careful
so not pc related, but is there a known issue with android where every image in gallery is apparently perm resized into a 1:1 image? for like 2 weeks now every thing i download is squished into 1:1
i have had very good experience with webroot
doesnt get annoying about updates or try and bloatware anything. and if you find anything that shouldnt be on your drive it can quarantine the file and if you want format it. its also really low impact even when doing a "deep scan"
ok so checked, it happened starting on the 20th and every downloaded image is resized to 800x500 pixel not 1:1
doesnt occur to photos taken on the phone nore to screenshots
AHH okok. Thankss!
fyi by "format it" it does that to the specific file, not just "delete" it removes any trace from the system
you can also customize alerts to be popup, sound, or "when you check"
it also ties into most web browsers and can tell you how reputable a site is and is really good at stopping those "your an idiot to click download" files from like adf.ly and such
ohh ok. ty for that warning š
i will try be careful
The program calls it "permanently erase with webroot" and it makes the file impossible to recover
Sup bros. all the tutorials i gone thru have cpu cooler and have fans put infront of the processor with the thermal paste. is it necessary? i didnt use this back then but that was like 8-9 years ago
your question isn't clear
thermal paste IS necessary
my bad. i dont remember putting it on my old pc but i just opened it and it does have the cpu cooler.
guess i should run back to the store and buy that lol. There's also an AIO cooler, which one is better?
There are chips that don't need them, but you won't find them in your desktop pc š
AIO is a bit much unless you're overclocking or running the latest AMDs.
not sure if its the latest but mine is ryzen 5 7600. is it ok?
check the package of your current cpu cooler, eventually it comes with thermal paste
aight. i will check for this once i shop for cpu cooler later
wait, you didn't even buy a cooler?
yea LOL i'm dumb. i forgot that was a thing. Then when i look up the youtube build a pc tutorial, it needs a cooler.
yea, get one
yea. but in the tutorials, there's also AIO. CPU cooler is enough right?
yes
aight thanks bro
hey bro, in the tutorials, there's also a heat sink for nvme m2 ssd. do i need those actually? i googled it but 50/50 says its a must and some say its not
it didnt came with my PC though
before i go to the shop to buy the cpu cooler, i just want to make sure i get everything i need lol
i would add one, doesnt need to be fancy, just a passive one without a fan
aight thanks bro
the noctua u12s isnt that pricey, and isnt very loud either
way too expensive imho
its $55 on amazon...
what's a good pc build that runs unreal fast and without problems?
entry level recommendations for dev work with unreal editor
CPU
-
Intel: i7 12th Generation or newer
-
AMD: Ryzen7 5800 or newer
-
Core Count: CPU should have at least 8 Cores (16+ Threads)
more Cores/Threads speed up parallel tasks like C++ compiling, Shader Compilation, CPU Lightbaking
Memory (RAM)
32GB or more
- additional notes for C++ users:
each compiler thread should have at least 2GB memory available + some reserve for OS/applications/unreal, usually you want 64GB+ on a 16 threads CPU for optimal CPU usage, also keep in mind that your IDE might need up to 8GB memory!
GPU
- 3060 (non ti) with 12GB video memory (VRAM) is a good budget card
- more VRAM may be necessary for complex scenes with a lot of high resolution textures
Storage
SSD! Ideally M2 NVME
reserve around 1-2TB for Unreal, depending on the amount of owned Assets (note: engine source builds take up to 250GB or more)
Laptops
same requirements apply.
keep in mind that the GPU/CPU counterparts are usually weaker than the desktop variant, a desktop Workstation should always be preferred since Laptops aren't made for heavy workloads over several hours.
last but not least
Hardware requirements are individual, your project and what kind of software you need/want to run in parallel may require more or less resources (e.g. running a 3D Modelling Software parallel to UE might bump the requirements for RAM and VRAM)
A simple low poly Game can be developed on a "weaker" machine, while a complex/fancy 3D game will require more resources.
If you just start learning Unreal and already have a computer which is able to run the Editor the recommendation is to stick to it while learning the basics and upgrade when necessary. (at that point you should already have an idea of what specs you may need)
The post after this will list a few Hardware examples, jump to this post and scroll down to view it.
User Configurations:
Low Poly Games:
- Ryzen 5 2600, AMD RX 580, 16GB RAM
- Ryzen 5 2400G, AMD Radeon Vega 11, 16GB RAM
updated that passage (i'm also open to grammar/spelling fixes...) just repost this with fixes
i only tick the ram checkbox
lol
you can get away with 850W but if you buy a new one get the size that is recommended for the GPU by the brand (iirc Laura runs a power limited 4090 with 850W)
they usually calculate in some extra peripherial, so you may end up a bit oversized but on the safe side
how did we end up in the same boat regarding PSU recommendations? š
my guess is 5-10% (from the powerlimit charts i've seen)
1kW should be totally fine
as long as it's from a serious brand
^^
I tick none of those š„
you tick the "it's possible to develop on weaker machines"
I suppose so
that might just be worse than my pc
oh my
i did my first year on a 3rd gen i7 with 16GB (later 48) and a 1660 with 6GB...
sure you can get started on low ass hardware, but the difference was quite noticable (and necessary at some point)
nah I do lowpoly, make games optimized for shittier pc's
yea don't get confused by the recommendations then
I got a low-mid pc, if I cant run it then its not optimised well
but that post is geared towards the folk which shows up here and wants to make city sample projects...
What's the latest line of Corsair RMx like?
I remember they used to be quite good, but I heard concerns of quality dropping a while back
yeah I figured
@dull token mind to share your specs, eventually i will add some as example at the end of the post?!
alright
cpu/memory/gpu is probably the most important
but dont be scared for my wellbeing (specifically that my pc explodes while working)
FWIW I'm doing quite well for my target of games, (lowpoly, relatively simple) on a Ryzen 5 2600, RX 580, and 16GB RAM.
Haven't tested UE5 on it yet on my personal machine though
so you are still using UE4?
I'm sure I could get it fine if I followed the pin in #ue4-general
yeah, sadly
(only because I'm running out of SSD for another engine version :P)
yea Laura wrote a good heads up of what's necessary to turn UE5 "into" UE4
Yup, it's the main reason I'm considering an upgrade
Especially since I quite want to run a source build at some point
Ram: 16GB
Processor: Ryzen 5 2400G
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon Vega 11
are compile times bothering you ACuppaTea?
is your project BP only, or also C++?
both
how about compile times? bearable or annoying af?
its a prebuilt relatively budget pc from 2019
well you see, I havent used C++ yet..
but for Blueprints compile times are perfectly fine
My C++ compile times are bearable.
I imagine working on any large system it might get to be rather annoying however
Packaging times are very annoying
I'm surprised you can run that on integrated graphics tbh.
though I do know AMD's iGPU's have always been a bit better than intel
i am suprised you are suprised
I am aware my specs are rather dissapointing
but like it works jsut fine honestly
I use UE5
I just know how hungry the engine is.
It hurts my poor RX 580 sometimes :P
Unreal is like the VRAM monster from hell
That's reassuring to hear
That's even more reassuring :P
I would run DX11, but Nanite looks interesting (on UE5)
Nanite is counterproductive for Low Poly
Lumen looks nice too, but that's a pipe dream š
It depends, I've seen ti able to hold it's own there in some circumstances
will they still not able to when you release?
e.g. if you target a release in 2 years, it's likely that many updated
have you tried... vulkan? š
also the cards most prebuilds in the budget range or best buy/walmart stock would hold without being 4090 price levels
custom building is actually pretty rare still compared to the actual steam user base
like what would be the ideal ue5 build also taking in consideration a somewhat strict budget?
a threadripper with 4090 if it's a strict budget of ~$5000?
