Very nice lighting and mood @violet fog . I would say that the strong depth of field gives it a slight toy/miniature feeling. Maybe up the aperture a little? Also looks like you have some clipping in the DOF effect, could be due to temporal upscaling or some other issue?
@scarlet marten thanks man, I left the dof effect on default settings, not sure what happened there, will try to fix it in my next little tests 😄
I noticed there is banding/clipping in DOF since 4.24 or 4.25. Not sure whether it's a bug or an optimisation but I fixed it by turning off temporal upscaling. My stuff wasn't for running on a console or anything so it wasnt an issue

Id say, work on the presentation more. Better lighting to help your texture pop more, and render the HP on marmoset aswell and give it a dark and glossy material
id personally skip the marmoset viewer, tbh. Your work can be ripped off from that
hehe my point was, i am on my first steps in to Substance Painter (or, Quixel Mixer, i still can choose, since i don't have any background on texturing)
oh, well, there are several good tutorials you could follow. Such as chamferzone and eugene petrov
Id suggest substance painter, it's what most studios use and it's well updated by the developers
personally, key to texturing is having many refs and I mean many.
And having a basic understanding of the material you are creating

Criticism would be that I think you're spending triangles in the wrong places. You have quite a few loops running on the spherical centre part -- You could probably take a few out.
And then spend those loops on the outside cylindrical part, as there's a little bit of faceting present. I'll show quickly in 3DS Max what I mean...:
Like this - That way you can spend a few extra polygons on the outside rim, reducing the amount of polys towards the inner circular/spherical piece that's smaller
It's perfectly fine to chamfer your edges, particular if it's softer materials like wood, or forged metal. 🙂

imo it should be best practice to not be wasteful with tris even if your engine can handle more, might leave more computing to handle other tasks like bone deformations or particles
It's good practice, as long as it's not wasting your time or degrading the visual quality
It's also a lot easier to optimize lower LODs of a somewhat too-high-poly mesh, than to make it more detailed
I mean, of course you dont want to sacrifice fidelity either but there is a point where additionnal tris go unnoticed during gameplay

@woven halo You have a fine shield over there. How long did it take to make it? Well, just take 50% off your modeling time, and devote it to extra texturing work instead.
This advice applies to literally every prop done by beginner.
Willing to bet that you've spent good deal of time and efforts sculpting the thing and ended up too exhausted for texture work, which seems lacking a bit.
Lack of proper ambient occlusion is your most contributing factor.
Topo issues were already pointed out above.

@umbral sentinel Yeah the texture part was my problem. I had some pictures of the shield from the serie Viking but a shield is just pretty boring. Not much going on there so I had no real ideas for the Textures
@mellow hare It is best practice to not waste triangles; however, the caveat is that triangles aren't so much a limitation anymore as they used to be. If your model is 50,000 polygons, and is wasting 1,000 polygons, then don't bother removing them if it's going to take more than a couple hours because that's a waste of paid time
Further, I made note of UE5 because topology is not the limitation by the look of it, as it essentially decimates stuff in real time to replace LODing, so geometric uniformity/density is more important, likely, than final polycount
Though the UE5 claim is that 20M tris meshes would be viable as hero assets on the next gen of hardware. We don't know if it means that all assets in the game will be able to have free triangles, and we don't know what are the constraints in terms of animation, choice ofAA, etc.
@woven halo looking back, I think there's a few too many sides on the Bolts. They look to be 24 sided, and could probably be reduced to 16. Spend the extra topology on the outermost circle
I'm not talking about making everything 20 million triangles, I mean, the density of polygons/their uniformity is likely going to be more important than final polycount, providing that your final polycount is not obscene -- which, for any professional artist, it never will be
Reason is because they're possibly doing things like storing texture information in vertex colors now that meshes are far more dense in UE4, and triangles are 'the size of pixels' which means you could comfortably store values in the vertices for texture details vs previously where it's more for rough masking
So as per example, vertices being uniformly dense is very useful
They're not doing that, that much we know
I'm just saying what UE5 will be able to do in a year when it release is still not something we know much about
Also, they did show you wireframes of an entire cave. You could clearly see that the topology's density was uniform across the frame
And yes, you absolutely could store textures in the vertices if there are triangles the size of a pixel, as they mention in their tech demo
Please don't shower aspiring artists with unnecessary technical details. They have all the weight of the world to bear when starting out. It deters them from optimal principle of making it look good first before making it fast.

It's efficient. I oftentimes use 'storage variables'. If I want to make A and B swap places, I put A in C, B in A, then C in B.
This...somehow does it in only 2/3 of the steps.

We've written a small plugin to help reduce editor load times whilst working from home. It's available for free on GitHub.

We use the automation system to load maps in the editor, runs Play In Editor for each map, and allows you to run console commands from here.
If you configure it to load the maps you generally use on a day-to-day basis, you should very rarely get hampered by waiting for shaders etc.

I just finished making a stock market education game for iOS and Android using Unreal Engine, called Spondooli, it basically takes the tough to understand and expensive to use stock market, and makes it a simple game where you can trade stocks, learn finance, and compete with friends. Everything in the game uses fake money, but the stocks you see are updated in real time, which means you can trade the equivalence of real stocks, without losing real money! A small project I did to get familiar with Unreal Engine and virtual production.
I wanted to convey the feeling of hopelessness and absence of choice where the hero, whoever that is, can't pick any other path but forward.
The project runs fully in real time with only one sky light baked, every other light has ray tracing on.
Some camera angles and movement were done with a help of an iPad Pro connected directly to the engine.
From the raw idea to the final image, it took me approximately one month of evenings/weekends to finish.

I am happy to finally call this Environment as completed (even though any art can be improved a way better always).
The inspiration for this environment comes from amazing environments from Mafia 3 where the artists bring the fictional city of New Bordeaux into a life based on new Orleans. I managed to complete this project during my spare time aside from other regular work.
I created everything in this Project (Except the car for which I used downloaded base mesh and customized and textured and Leaf textures & Decals from Megascans). Lighting is fully dynamic.
In this Unreal environment, I've tried to capture the key references of New Orleans and the french quarter to have a similar feel and bit of storytelling.
My sincere thanks to the Polycount and Discord communities for providing feedback throughout the process when I asked for it. I decided to restrict the video only to the Night scene for avoiding repetition of the scene except lighting. Hope you like it!

@tranquil fractal after barely getting the box on the button since my gravity gun wasnt working I was enraged seeing another button, and realizing i had to bring the other box upstairs to finish the room. Of course I could've pushed the box upstairs but that is a hustle by itself, not even considering I cant move forward or left.
Everything looks tidy and nice, I was surprised when i heard music in the main menu. If you fixed the bugs you can get a nice game out of this.

@soft fox I hop between FL studio and ableton which aren't free, however there is a program called "Reaper" that gives a free 60 day evaluation that is SOLID and extremely similar to the other DAWs. The sounds are almost all free and collected from an endless amount of places as well as live samples and sounds I've recorded myself. Spitfire Audio vst4free and many other places have tons of VST plugins that you can use as well.

finally released the demo, took forever, my level in arcade is 202, try and beat it! there are some bugs and i haven't put the new color pallet in but I'm close to implementing the new features aswell as fixing bugs.
NOTE: Arcade aparently is broken and the enemy plane wrecks dont despawn, so the game lags a ton after a few levels

yea there are some issues, the water i cannon fix because anything with translucency messes up the clouds
the level is based on how fast / slow you do it
im going to change that soon
also if you had trouble shooting then try pressing tab a few times to lock a target, you can hold z to track it and use S to slow down to turn faster, CTRL fires the gun

Fully dynamic, Directional light and select accent spotlights are raytraced, the skylight is not. SSGI,AO and Reflections, non raytraced.

You're pretty much correct. Landscape is composed of a 4 layer material using Megascans. The lava is a world position-based directionally panning material that has vert painting set up to have a cooled down lava for the edges and a moving flow of hotter lava for the middle parts. The lens flares are opacity masked cards that always face the camera.

Beautiful relight @thorny gulch I have always loved the orangeish and blueish colors colliding together. And the volumetric fog really adds a sense of depth and scale to the scene. Overall looks amazing good job!

@south kiln Thank you! that means a lot 🙂 I worked on it over a long period of time, and looking back I would've done it very differently and a lot more optimized. My initial goal was a next-gen poly count, so around 200k. Which it is roughly, but if you add the cannons and other details it's 300k+ poly's.
If I would start this project today, with the knowledge I have, I'm confident I can shave off a third easily

I even menation in the description that I don’t own any of the assets nor sounds in the project. As long as I don’t make any money of it and give credit to the people, I think it’s ok. @tepid sierra stolen IP is stolen IP, it doesn't matter if someone else stole it and then gave it to you, it's still stolen and Disney can ask for it back (i.e. to be destroyed). thankfully it would be rather difficult for Disney to demonstrate that you caused them monetary loss, and therefore it would be rather difficult for them to actually sue you for any real money. it's just always at risk of a good old c&d. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

On the other hand, your work is blatant copyright infringement, you are literally using Star Wars movie characters as a thumbnail, and using the brand too

Missing any of the windows you open too, this happens with OBS when you have targeted window instead of full display. Audio is not the best, some slurring sounds. Possibly too aggressive gates etc in your filters.

@soft fox Thanks! I was getting a good 25-60 fps depending on what area of the city I was looking at and how much was the raytracing quality. However, since I come from vfx background, we prioritize quality over fps so when I was final rendering it into exrs, I bumped up the raytracing gi and reflection settings super high to get crisp clean renders. Even then the renders were blazing fast. One of the longest shots was 700 frames long, rendering at 4k, took UE 30 minutes to render. This was stunning as a comparable render from even the fastest GPU based renderers like Redshift in a scene this dense with huge area lights casting shadows and tons of materials would take close to 5-6 hours or more 🙂

the speed of the runners matched their animations! i think it’s just a case of 24fps + motion blur (particularly with the guy running past the camera) 😆
i appreciate the compliment though, i’m overall really happy with how it turned out

I made this gun following a great tutorial produced by Victory 3D. Making this gun really pushed my limits and forced me to get out of my comfort zone. I had to learn ZBrush, Substance Painter, Headus UV, and Marmoset Toolbag 3 for this project. Even though this gun was a massive challenge I am stoked with how it turned out!

It is a badass show! S02 is even better! Pretty mind bending when we saw the Volume, their LED setup before anyone else got a chance to see. I worked as a senior compositor on the Mandalorian S01. We created the blurrg creature, did a lot of the shots of Mando and Kuiil's conversations, parts from Mando's exchange with Jawas, some dune shots and bunch of Razorcrest shots.

Hi there, just wanted to shine some light on a new project I have released on the Marketplace: https://unrealengine.com/marketplace/en-US/product/grapple-component.
The Grapple Component is used to create sequences where different characters are interacting. These interactions can assume any form, for example throws, finishing moves, revive animations or other** cinematic sequences**.
During these interations, characters play synchronized animations and provide other player feedback. Grapple Sequences can also influence gameplay, for example by repositioning characters, changing movement capabilities or applying damage. The Grapple Component also supports **multiplayer **projects.
This functionality is built entirely in** Blueprint **and provides a high amount of customizability to users.

First time tried to make an open area environment. Turned out well and very well optimized. Took foliages (not trees) from Quixel Megascans.
All of the meshes (excluding trees) is 18.398 tris. Took references of Shinto Temples and Medieval Tombs and Tombstones in Japanese(Every model and level design is done by me).
