Depends I guess, personally I would say assets that contribute the most in aspects that is sorely covered or requires a massive amount of time/skills would qualify no matter how much they sell

generally to speed up production (tools), buying stuff for tests/mockups/experiments, and edit the assets as needed to fit their game.
some people just want to make a game regardless how it looks, or buy things from one and the same style.
As someone who uses Unreal for non-game stuff (immersive simulation for research), I heavily rely on the MP. I really don't care if my whole scene is made up of MP assets, it's actually an advantage: it frees up my time to focus on more business oriented tasks. So far we've spent ~5k⬠on the MP, which is a very small fraction of the cost if we'd had to do all that ourselves or via subcontracts.
But I really don't know if that's a major or minor market share of the MP. And I don't think details on that are available anywhere.

They probably have some rough idea. Just based on the email address of the buyer, you can get a lot of information. If 90% of your sales are to @gmail.com, you can guess that you're mostly selling to indies. It's obviously not a perfect way to figure our what your market is, but it's better than "We have no idea".
people using gmail accounts are not necessarily indies, so I would suggest that's a very poor methodology
survey results would be more reliable than guesswork
gmail probably wasn't the best example, but I know people from the automotive industry using the MP, and they each do with their corporate email. So Epic can have a rough estimate of each industry just by sorting the email address according to their domain (I'm sure there are some BI tools for that).
Hunting through tens of thousands of marketplace e-mail addresses and manually trying to assign them to an industry is an exercise in madness, especially when so much work is carried out by subsidiaries and third parties on behalf of a major stakeholder
to put it simply, using the e-mail address is not going to work
I know when I was doing work for Audi, it was via a third party, and we were one of several contracted entities doing that kind of work
As I said, there are BI tools out there for that. The problematic of knowing your market and customers in a digital-only business isn't really a new thing for which we have no answer. I'd be really surprised if Epic didn't have some rough estimates of who buys what in the MP.

I think only the reviews/ratings have such effect. So consider the free assets, these skyrocket. Are all of them good tho? Then look at the reviews themselves, they are mostly useless: "good", "fantastic", "does the job" and similar. Also I have heard for some sellers pushing hard that you leave a review/rating or bust.
Not to talk about the price of an asset... In general, mass opinion does not go a hand-to-hand with quality.

The bug where you make a change and submit then it sits awaiting review perpetually until you cancel and resubmit is really annoying. I think it happened with a new plugin as well but have no idea. They've taken a day longer than their current contact times

Looking at my previous payment dates it's never been the first. Either mid month like 14th/15th or the 30th. Could it be different because I'm from the UK?

Why there's so many models at sale supposedly rigged to the epic skeleton that are bad rigged?? I mean, the first I do to test an skeleton it's to throw it a fbx with the T pose, it's very clear when a model isn't well rigged. And not talking about the A pose, that many times it's different.
Its not easy to do that.
Well i avoid making that type for now. But i know its not easy to polish it. Single mistake can make you remade all over again.
I know, it's hard, only saying that the rigged to Unreal Skeleton Yes should be really rigged that skeleton. Very few models are really rigged the right way. I've no problem using a non rigged, but in marketplace, in my opinion, the QA should verify that it's really rigged and you can use it right out of the box.
marketplace has sadly some wide spread of asset quality, and you never really know what you get π¦

the only way ive done this, is email the mp-team as they have a database they can pull from. a script might be better :p
I've made the script but it requires some manual work, as I can't just request any user's Vault. So the user first has to to generate a json dump of its Vault, which is a simple as clicking a link (https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/api/assets/vault?count=100). But Epic doesn't allow requesting a list larger than 100 items, so if you have more, you have to dump multiple json.
But once you have all the jsons, the script generates a list of links to all MP products you own. Plus it also outputs the total value of your Vault.
If people are still interested in the script even with those limitations, I'll clean it up, write a README and put it on GitHub.

Hey, for the past month or so I've been working on an animation pack for a Sig P320, I went through textures and removed all company branding and names as well as renamed the gun in the files to something fictional. When I went through everything else to upload it to the marketplace it got rejected twice due to still looking like a "replica model under copyright." I'm wondering if I change some colors and materials (plastic to metal or something) if that would be enough to get rid of these issues. I really don't want to change the model because that would mean scrapping all my work essentially.
I also see some guns on the marketplace being called by their irl names including branding and am wondering why they might be getting a pass but I have to change the majority of the design
Simply share those plugins with your example projects. And clearly mention that this plugin is for non-commercial purposes. Redirect users(add a link or so) for the marketplace for commercial use.
It's pretty simple & worked well for me.
Even though you sell the plugin on the marketplace, you can distribute it in any other way you like.

man, brings me back to a few years ago when they changed the rules.
there are a few guns that do not have copyright, there are also guns that are named differently in real life but we got used to their names in games.
Some where already published before they changed the rules on this, some might have (doubt it) permission.
anyways, any new gun published needs to follow the rules. just changing the textures is not enough, there needs to be visual differences in the model compared to the actual copyrighted/trademarked weapon.
If you don't want to change the gun mesh, you could go to other marketplaces like Gumroad.

So, thinking about the EULA loophole for code plugins again, would it be okay for a team/company to mass create Epic accounts, and assign it to each seat/office computers? So that the employees/team members don't use their personal Epic accounts, and considering that in most cases, the project files stays in the company's computer.
Maybe that way the plugin can be paid for by the higher ups, but the employees can't take it home with him/her outside of the company's projects, even in the case of job termination, because of the plugin bound to the company's Epic accounts
When I was working for BP tech support, the 'per seat' license for some of the software we used wasn't specific to a user. It was total number of concurrent users. So if we had 12 seats, only 12 people at a time could be using it but if someone logged off that software it meant someone else could use that seat.
In most other commercial software cases, you'd be able to pay for bulk licence using one e-mail address (last time I got to use one, it was SketchUp and Adobe stuff)

I had to stop developing a product and I asked them to process refunds from the customers.
But some of those customers asks refunds for a wrong product.

Hi, I have a quick question regarding updating a product. After I click on Submit File Update, should i replace download links to existing versions or create new versions for the update?
When using source control, is it possible to ensure that Engine versions on different computers have the same installed content from the marketplace? I take it that content added to the project itself is simple to include, but is it the same way for engine content?
if you need to update the files, then you (iirc) can just update the download link.
if you want to do that, you need to install your plugins to the project itself, not the engine. Just put them in the plugin directory for the project

If it's sold on the Epic store, you then own the rights to it and allowed to publish it in your game.
If it is highly similar to someone or some company's work however you may need to tread carefully and put some effort into making it your own

How can you import the content from a Marketplace asset that only lets you "Create Project" to an existing project? For example a locomotion system, or an inventory system.
It seems like other people are only asking about importing meshes, textures, etc. but I haven't found other people asking this question. Why am I un-smart?
Oh I haven't seen the migrate option yet. So you have to create a project for the new asset first then migrate from that?

I suggest easy rpg if you are going for a viking rpg game. Modern rpg if you are doing a shooter rpg type. Both of them are already games by themselves.

Yeah fair enough, there's a few of those I've run into already! Unity does have all of these, as post process or camera effects, but it's more the communication and fine grained/ curve driven control that's a timesaver.
I could trivially re-create it, but it would take me a day or so at least, and $20-40 is a steal at that point

Usually when people continue to work on their products, they increase the price along with the quality.
For a system as big and resourceful as the Logic Driver Pro, $200 is a steal. Unless you can make something that would cover a fraction of it's functionality in the timeframe it would take you to make $200
for my use case I can do all with the free version
Though if you want similar system for free, recommend checking out Flow Graph.

Creators often use reviews or questions to verify users have actually bought the asset as opposed to finding it on a dodgy site. There isn't a way for creators to know otherwise. Some creators might try and force a positive review for what ever reasons, but that's a different thing all together.

I am in favor of verifying buyers for discord support. But if this is getting too common then the marketplace or the creator needs to give an alternative instead of posting to the reviews and questions. It is getting too saturated to browse over the questions and reviews to read relevant info. It defeats the purpose of these two categories IMO. I usually read the reviews and questions before buying an asset. More likely buyers forget to remove these verification reviews/questions after the verification step.
Any review posted for verification purposes is likely going to be ill-informed, considering it's likely at the start of your usage of that asset, too. Just ends up being a way to solicit mass 5* reviews from people who have just bought your asset.
when epic is going to provide proper tools for publishers to verify purchases then 100% those questions/reviews will disappear.
otherwise none of the publishers want to offer support to people that downloaded their product from a pirate website
If someone owns the marketplace asset, they should know what to ask about it on the support discord server.

Hello guys. I have a question about characters in the UE marketplace. I want to upload my custom character to marketplace but I want to include the file of the rigged character in maya, so people can animate the character and export the animation to UE. In the marketplace guidelines I saw a form about using third party software but I don't understand if it is something that applies to this situation. Is it possible to upload my maya file with the UE asset or do i have to upload somewhere else and just link it in the asset? Thanks.
you can make a separate folder in your project, name it something like sourcefiles, and put your non-UE content in there. which is allowed and multiple creators have done so. @stoic phoenix

The marketplace in of itself isn't bad, it's just got inconsistent minimum quality. Ask the MP team what Unreals specular value range is and how exactly a constant 3 * [0-1] complies with that.. π

The Quality vs Cost is a bit loose on the MP. I have seen some expensive products whose authors made some dubious decisions at best.
Therefore always investigate as much as possible upfront.

But now after making over 1000$ in a day it would be too financially irresponsible to do so. If I was to make anything for the MP now I would make a big disclaimer that I'm not gonna provide support for anything that is not directly related to the thing I'm selling, even if it reduces the number of sales
The definition of "multiplayer support" on the marketplace is a little vague imo

In other hand I had the both experiences, people that reply me in a day and they fix an issue with their content or even edit a thing for me, and people that never reply after 6 months the support email and they are selling a broken thing and for that one never asked for refund tbh, used it just as learn material to an extend, it was like 10$ so...

The complex systems usually are too vague in the general of the marketplace too.
In that way is better the Unity market as you see at least the folder tree

Yeah. Simply clearly mentioning what it does and won't clear things up. And having a Discord support helps a bit too. Other people might help those customers.
I had couple of instances where people who disappointed about the product. I simply share then the refund link.

It looks nice and I bet people would pay for it. Read the marketplace guidelines 2-3 times. It's bit tough to get approval for content only projects.
Also there are people who makes a living from the marketplace. Also don't rely only on marketplace discovery. Do your own marketing.

Content Only means basically projects with 3D assets only.
There are some certain amounts of assets you need to have & you need to follow the guidelines exactly. (File naming, etc)
I not saying it's a bad thing, but reading that guideline could save time on everyone.
About marketing, I usually get a decent amount of sales from the marketplace. (Especially when there are sales & when they announce FREE content)
But, I usually do some Youtube videos on new features/updates, That'll give me additional amount of sales as well.

If you don't satisfy with the product, you can ask for a refund or give them a bad review.
But you can't force an author to give support or so.
You can't get that kind of support from marketplace assets. These are just $$ products & author's time worth 50-100$/hour.
So, don't expect that kind of support.
If you really want such support, try hiring that person if possible.
Since you have big investors, that won't be a problem.

depends on the product, I get maybe one or two a year. (regular asset pack)

I dont condone piracy, I get it if you are poor and just need some stuff to get started, but once you can pay for it, please do so. we have mouths to feed. if I was making the big boy bucks I'd probably give away all my stuff for free, but sadly that is not the case.

Here's my workflow on support & I don't worry about the source where they got the pack.
- I usually document most of the things & link those if someone asks a question.
- If that's not generic, maybe it's a bug so I can try to fix it.
- Or I will add that to the docs, make a video or share this link
- Sometimes, I simply say this is not this package offers, ask for a refund.
This saves me time & improves the product as well.
Some of those GitHub users end up paying me at some point as well.
Anyway, this doesn't work with all the products & every author.
But something to consider.

Unfortunately people don't value things they get for free. What you're saying is a dream and it's not sustainable and you'll never earn enough from it. "they end up paying me at some point" is not good enough. You didn't find the cure to piracy. You just give away your stuff for free.
Don't want to offend you, just the harsh truth, but you'd be earning more if you'd just sell your product even though your product is pirated.
You'd be doing better than just giving away for free, with Lite version of your product, if the product is big enough to have a Lite version with limited functionality. But once you give your full product for free, users have no incentive to purchase the product when they already have it and they have the rights to use it.
It's not actually FREE. Only for non-commercial purpose. Anyway, this is what everyone else is doing expect for Abobe & Autodesk π

we learned so much from just inspecting working game projects like conan
i've modded halo since CE, that's what got me started. those were the times
i've modded many more games but halo holds a special place for me
well modding games were the only option when i was a teen

there's one petting animation on mixamo.com but its petting a horse. You can edit the spine/pelvis in the animation to make the character bend over. maybe it will work

question regarding assets bought on marketplace; we have an artist which is being commissioned to create some additional parts for a human (armored) model. Is it against marketplace TOS to send these files to the artist to make it easier for him to make them fit? Any alternatives?
I think the EULA states that for Content assets, you can share it within the team. It's just the code plugin that has the exception

if you're hiring someone to specifically work on the project as a contractor, then they are part of your team and it's reasonable to send them the files they need to complete that work on your behalf

So plugins are a special case, but "regular assets" like models and such can be shared with contractors as long as they only use them to produce new content that is given back to you.
The contractor must however have a license to Unreal Engine, i.e., be allowed to open the assets you send them in Unreal Editor.

Water is tricky. Fluid Ninja comes to mind, no idea if there are others though.
how accurate are you talking? a semi decent simulation can probably be done with fluidninja, but "good enough" visual effects can be sort of faked with particle systems. Depends what you actually need.

Hello, I am in the process of creating content for the unreal marketplace and beyond. My project is to make a collection of realistic rocks built in Houdini. These rocks are for use in games and real time environments. So far I have 5 cliffs built. My goal is to add some mountain meshes and boulders as well as small foliage scatter rocks.
I am looking for information from customers who have bought asset packs (for any engine or software) before. If you can spare some time to answer any these questions I would be grateful:
- What was your favorite asset pack that you ever bought? What did you like most about it?
- Is customization of the assets important to you? If so what would you like to customize?
- Are you looking for lots of features? Or would you rater have minimal options so as not to create clutter?
- UVs in this pack are all build by hand to avoid overlap so it plays well with baked lighting. Does this add lots of value or are you guys all using dynamic lighting anyways?
- Would you watch tutorial content about how to make cliffs like this?
Here are some quick WIPs of the project so far, I've got a couple of world aligned sand and snow materials as well as a detail normal that blends instances up close. Software is Blender, Houdini, Rizom UV, Substance Painter/Designer
Any advice that you have would help me a lot, or if this just sparks discussion about asset packs in general that would be interesting as well.

- yes, I expect a clean master material and a clear and easy to reconfigure material instance. I also expect proper naming conventions.
- I dont expect many features from a rock-pack, they need to be clean, accurately PBR, proper pivot points, and if possible a few alternative textures for different looks, and correct texel densities.
- its mandatory to have lightmap uv's, and while not mandatory I expect them to be set up properly with a minimum lightmap setting, and correct lightmap texel density.
- I personally wouldnt, but I assume people wanting to make more/learn how to do this obviously would.

Quixel has several rocks and cliffs, there are also some rock assets in the marketplace. But if you could add more procedural stuff in generating different variety of rock or connecting them to form cliffs, overhangs with material parameters that can change a bit of the look that it would be better

I agree with the most of what Luos has mentioned. I donβt think many people would interested in rocks like this. They can easily go for mega scans.
But thereβs a good market for complete landscapes + scenes etc.
Also, if you add some procedural tools it will be some good value addition.
