#

are you sure ?

they used something like SSSS to spot cancers

I wish I was baked two times, nahmean?

median wraith
#

and he claims it don't have the enough power even with x2

๐Ÿ˜‚

he had these prior the crisis for 1500โ‚ฌ each

Lumberyard have gone full open source

median wraith
#

@light spruce @unborn lotus got here a scene that takes 30 seconds to compile on CPU, lets see how compares

median wraith
#

that's Lumberyard ?

#

what ?

solid aurora
#

yes

you can choose MIT too

but tbh are kinda similar

I can't wait for someone to still be swearing that Windows 7 is the best thing ever by the time Windows 12 rolls around. Also can't wait for someone to inevitably re-theme 11, 12, and however many after to look like Windows XP

solid aurora
#

tbh engine must be crap

#

only 3gb

light spruce
#

And yet ... you're still an idiot if you use that dogshit cry engine

median wraith
#

Also O3DE sounds kinda bad in spanish

#

well Cryengine used to be all realtime

#

from what I know this have the last updates from Cryengine V

#

don't expect the platforms support for consoles and these things UE4 have

#

but will got you covered on PC and VR pretty sure

light spruce
#

just installing Lumberyard fucked up and pissed me off

#

Is there even a commercial product available that was built with it?

median wraith
#

Anyway this can be a good chance for Godot and other engines to get code or whatever

median wraith
#

hows called ?

solid aurora
#

Star Citizen

#

and no

#

they are not really using Lumberyard

#

they cloud just as well start from scratch

light spruce
#

Yeah, I meant something that actually exists

solid aurora
#

I play it

#

it exists

light spruce
#

They might as well, since it will never be released anyway

median wraith
#

anyway the base of Cryengine to the public is nice

light spruce
#

It's probably about as useful as the leaked Frostbite stuff

median wraith
#

well that one wasn't able to be used XD

#

here you can copy paste

#

the whole internal libs

solid aurora
#

no

#

though

#

if you are fan of starting from scratch

#

actually one thing

#

component system

light spruce
#

Oh, actually, there were two things released using it

#

Coffence and The Grand Tour Game

#

And The Grand Tour Game was delisted a year ago

median wraith
#

Well the voxel GI if you want it

#

but right now UE5 have it too so

#

still the cost is way higher, but don't see anyone using it for the GI when the rest of tools are kinda limited

light spruce
#

archvis is about the only useful application of GI currently

median wraith
#

@unborn lotus

#

First test looks kinda strange

#

well the sun is doing nothing

#

almost looks inverted ?

#

well inverted looks like this

light spruce
median wraith
#

@unborn lotus only works for total static lights

๐Ÿ˜†

10 years waiting for this

unborn lotus

no stationary?

and that cryengine did it better anyways ๐Ÿ˜„

median wraith
#

Well to me is fine if you add GPU computing at lightmaps, kinda like Blender etc

#

just don't get why at this point still don't work/have any use for games

#

in other hand I'm trying something because I think I got something broken on my side

faint dock
#

did you RTXON???

#

๐Ÿ˜›

light spruce
#

RTX: Because you want a "more cinematic" look of 24FPS

median wraith
#

static light should affect dynamics

#

but no idea why isn't doing it on my side

graceful sequoia
#

yeah it should work afaik

median wraith
#

maybe is the forward shading

graceful sequoia
#

oh yeah probably

#

forward shading is much more limited in render features

#

and if that's lumen I seem to remember hearing it's deferred only right now?

median wraith
#

maybe

#

well technically the actors getting affected by static light should be basic

#

Anybody uses standing desk? Or they are just a gimmick?

light spruce
#

Spending too much time on your ass or on your feet either one aren't great for you

#

Unless you really want to invest in some sit/stand monstrosity... just get up and wander around for a bit every hour

carmine frigate
#

id get a standing desk, but my chair doesnt reach that high

tulip orbit
#

standing desks are great for places like a warehouse where you're just there for a few minutes, then running around and such

carmine frigate
#

thats totally a thing u could sell tho

tulip orbit
#

I want a sleeping desk ๐Ÿ™‚

carmine frigate

that's a win win

#

๐Ÿ‘€ Look who posted the Amazon thing

spare glade
#

But can it run Crysis?

graceful sequoia
#

if it weren't for tons of licensing baggage in unreal I feel like they'd open that up too, now that Fortnite revenue dwarfs unreal revenue by so much

quasi mantle
#

Also according to Amazon, O3DE omits "2 million lines".
So no longer CryEngine remnants?

spare glade
#

Unreal is open source, you just cant steal its code and use it outside of Unreal...

quasi mantle
spare glade
#

๐Ÿคท

#

The source is available to view to the public at anytime.

median wraith
quasi mantle
#

It's just that Unreal Engine licence being free gives the impression of open source.

graceful sequoia
#

yeah source available, the definition of open source is that you can steal the code

median wraith
#

Let's say then Unreal Engine isn't libre

graceful sequoia
#

well not technically

#

they are definitely going in the direction of letting go of ue4 licensing revenue in favor of the network effects of an open engine

spare glade
#

Getting hung up on the technicalities is a wasted exercise.

graceful sequoia
#

I think epic rightfully sees that Fortnite as a platform will make more money than ue as a platform ever could, and no one's saying they would drop some reasonable profit on the unreal marketplace anyway

quasi mantle
spare glade
#

Fortnite will be a money maker so long as they keep up with demand.

#

Its lifetime is limited, like every other game.

#

Hence having UE itself as a platform and continuing to improve it along the way is smart.

graceful sequoia
#

I would venture a guess that MS and GitHub wouldn't be super stoked about hosting a hugely popular, very heft git repository that is not actually open source for free

spare glade
#

As it will outlive fortnite.

carmine frigate
#

lol tim must be laughing his ass off ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Amazon made a terrible deal

quasi mantle
#

Though some people named UE as Fortnite Engine at this point. ๐Ÿ˜›

#

And UE5 is Fortnite Engine 2

carmine frigate
#

i talked to some1 from epic and he said something about lumberyard .. and he wasnt allowed to talk about it

quasi mantle
#

Not even UT got ported to UE5, so Unreal Engine no longer has meaningful associations with Unreal IP.

graceful sequoia
#

unreal engine is definitely more valuable ip than unreal the game at this point

carmine frigate
#

some stuff not said told me a whole lot i guess

#

B4 lumberyard i think a deal with epic was on the table and they didnt take

spare glade
graceful sequoia
#

I do miss those monster kills though

quasi mantle
#

Arena shooter is pretty much turned into battle royale fiesta.

carmine frigate
#

UT is still good tho. not many servers but still some

spare glade
#

Crytek were in basically the opposite position.

#

They had no money and no valuable IPs worth pushing forward.

#

They couldnt stand on their own 2 feet, so they sold what asset they had... Cryengine.

carmine frigate
#

epic went time 10 or more cuz fortnite and amazon spends over a billion a year on their game dept and make 0 games

spare glade
#

Id say money was not the biggest factor.

quasi mantle
#

Aside of Kingdom Come Deliverance, which was touted as CryEngine's "killer app" post Crysis.

carmine frigate
#

money is allways the biggest factor ๐Ÿ˜›

quasi mantle
#

Then Crysis Remastered pretty much underwhelmed everyone

carmine frigate
#

you are sorta right tho, amazon was ready to drop loads of money

spare glade
#

I think its naive to imagine that was meant to save them...

quasi mantle
#

IIRC, Crysis Remastered weren't even built with CE 5, but updated CE 3 of sorts.

carmine frigate
#

5% is not much for a team of 100, but 5% is a load of you put 5000 people on it

#

large scale deals

#

so when the deal didnt take they dropped UE entirely but thats just what i think

#

pure speculation

quasi mantle
carmine frigate
#

yea but large scale deals, if you buy 50% of epic and u pay 5% you get 2.5% back

#

fortnite still runs on amazon servers so there prolly isnt much bad blood, but also feels like he is rubbin it in a bit :p

light spruce
#

Two options that aren't suitable for serious development!

#

Well.. you might be able to do a serious 2D game in godot

#

I know the 3d performance is pretty awful

#

And I still think the 23958235 hooks for different languages is a dumb idea

#

like.... brb I'm going to write a game in a mixture of COBOL and QBasic

graceful sequoia
light spruce
#

Awesome. You write all the code. I'll write all the story and it will just be my dumb life. And the gameplay can be as involved as Disco Elysium and a bunch of people can claim it's amazing because you can run around dressed like a dipshit.

#

I don't understand the praise that game got. I played through it a few times to make sure I didn't miss something amazing. The most interesting aspect of it is a sub-plot that's completely missable

quasi mantle
#

I don't even know Disco Elysium.

light spruce
#

The idea of physics breaking down in places so they just kind of ... catapulted planes through "the pale" because they'd eventually stop generating thrust and lift is pretty cool

light spruce
#

I give it points for being the only game where I've died inside of 30 seconds because I failed to pull a tie off a ceiling fan

#

The "thought cabinet" was an interesting idea which was really not supported by the game progression

#

"I'm once again reminded of how Contact Mike rose from the slums of Saint-Batiste to the top of the boxing world, overcoming adversity and serious brain trauma. Nothing is coming -- nothing he wouldn't knock out in three rounds. The real fight is for the right attitude."

summing it up, bp gets the short end of the stick in terms of first class citizen in the engine, despite epic relying on it heavily

Looking up the definition of first class citizen that's kind of an odd statement.

I will not review unsolicited services.

#

Anyhow. My recent game jam game with UE5 went well!

#

I am very impressed, though my poor GTX 1060 isn't fond of me right now.

#

I built the whole level out of simple 1 meter blocks that had around 10 or so thousand triangles each, and I have at least a hundred blocks in there. Nanite is very effective. Lumen is also a life saver here because it is a dark horror game, though Lumen does complain on occasion when I have super bright and super small emission sources around.

unborn lotus

I have a 1060 too, UE5 in general is just too slow for me, including viewport navigation or menus

#

But that was when I saw it wants account

light spruce
#

You had all these things were you could give people education options and skills training... give people decent cells for being non-violent offenders....

#

And still, low security risk inmates will get into fights and make shivs and dig tunnels to escape when they're 6 months from parole

#

So, it basically wanted you to treat everyone like animals and keep them completely locked down, constantly searched and the cell conditions and other programs might as well not even be there

cursive crypt
#

I see. Hmm... never thought they shouldn't try to escape. Maybe they changed the AI last few years.

light spruce
#

If you're in prison... you've got a private cell, including your own shower, haven't committed any violent crimes, you're getting an education, going to... whatever religious classes or whatever... and you're not in for life...getting constantly assaulted, tazed, whatever... Pretty dumb idea to start hoarding forks and then somehow tunnel out through your toilet.

Also stuff like DNS scans to find domains, or search engine scans to find other domains that are on the same server, if one of the others might be vulnerable

light spruce

Let's Game it Out is full of insanity

Man... I still remember build a fantastic carrier, but I just goofed once and my ages long reign finished in a instant.

Talking about being a hacker

light spruce

Well, yeah... If it was too much like actual hacking... you'd need to .. you know.. how to actually write code and shit

cursive crypt
#

Oh, no. Breaching looks so boring.

light spruce
#

Real hacking is frequently not ... super exciting.

carmine frigate
#

but you get to wear a cool hoody behind ur PC

#

cuz thats what hackers wear

light spruce
#

Who doesn't wear hoodies?

quasi mantle
#

I don't

cursive crypt
#

The only hacker I knew about was just a dude who did it once, because some device vendor was fancying super secure PC (microcontroller + I/O and control logic). Took him just few days to replace the I/O port and put his code. Basically, the idea of not breaking the front metal door, but going through the opened window.

shell garden

#

i'll let you guess which batshit crazy, out-of-touch-with-users company this is

light spruce
#

Yeah, the "exciting" parts of hacking are on-premises stuff... social engineering... intercepting RFID scanner codes... putting hardware in place

#

just plain old lock bypasses

cursive crypt
#

Social engineering = charming the door lady to give you the door pass

light spruce
#

not the only part

#

A button down, clipboard, and a laminated ID will get you pretty fucking far

cursive crypt
#

Sounds cool.

light spruce
#

Also pretty much the same approach you use when wiring in a single board computer to a card scanner on the outside of a building.

#

Guy with a clipboard... obviously supervising the guy doing the work

cursive crypt
#

On that stage is knowing more about the different protocols.

light spruce
#

what kind of protocols are we talking about?

median wraith
#

cursive crypt
#

Hardware ones

light spruce

#

oh

cursive crypt
#

Or okay, software ones

light spruce
#

Yeah... it's knowing what kinds of cards they use

median wraith
#

at that of the 3 to 5am the compilation times goes fast and the world slow ๐Ÿ˜‚

light spruce
#

But you can generally get hardware that will handle most, if not all of them

cursive crypt
#

Hmm... well many micros have tons of support, but... still, the boring is packets descriptions, type of data, blah blah

light spruce
#

And then you put the board between the actual reader and whatever it authenticates with... capture all the codes... then you can play them back without even having a card.

#

So, observation means you can figure out what code belongs to who.... so you can pick one to play back

cursive crypt

Scamming devices I think was the term.

To be fair based on the article it looks like they do have engine development skills in the company

So I don't see why they wouldn't carve out their niche assuming a suitably large number of plugins gets developed to produce useful functionality out of the box.... or at least that seems like a requirement to get smaller indies

Tbh the main question that I wonder about is the fact that rendering and physics are offloaded to someone else... which are probably the two most complicated parts of an engine

carmine frigate

some stuff doesnt need physics tho

Yeah like cookie clicker

almost everything that runs in real time has physics of some sort, of course not necessarily realistic physics

because in unreal its allready baked in

well I can't really think of non-turn based games that don't have physics of some sort no matter what engine it uses

light spruce
#

I run Manjaro instead of straight arch

cursive crypt
#

Debian or bust

light spruce
#

not anymore

#

That shit ended when their old-ass grub resulted in me having to fuck around a lot to get my servers to boot after I changed my ZFS compression over to zstd

#

(also the end of me using grub)

cursive crypt
#

Never had issues with grub tbf

foggy path
#

I just run defaults for filesystems lol

cursive crypt
#

But, yeah, they keep old builds usually for longer than neccessary.

foggy path
#

they seem to work well enough!

light spruce
#

I'm running ZFS because I actually take my storage pretty seriously

#

I've still got another machine to move over from debian

cursive crypt
light spruce
#

My fix was just saying "fuck it" and installing grub to the efi partition... because my boot directory was on my zfs root that it couldn't read anymore because it didn't have support for zstd compression. Which.. I didn't know... because I never though about grub needing to natively handle the compression algorithm.

#

And that's basically what systemd-boot does. It just puts a bootable image on the efi partition

#

But that's the second time I've had some problem with grub and debian. Before that, it shit the bed because they pushed some build in response to a CVE that would break on some configurations.

#

But Manjaro.. hey.. I can boot off a live image and mount my zpool(s) in an altroot without doing weird stuff because... they ship it with zfs support

#

Which not everyone will do because there are hand-wavy license considerations

#

But there's nothing else that comes close to doing what it can do. Btrfs is the only remotely similar option...and anything outside of a mirror configuration is random data loss.

quasi mantle

shell garden
#

zfs has snapshots and stuff

light spruce
#

holy hell.

foggy path
#

there's no movies with many Z's in the title

#

Snapshots? Is that like a go back to this state -point?

shell garden
#

yah

foggy path
#

How much of a disk space cost does it have?

shell garden
#

it's copy-on-write

light spruce
#

ZFS is an advanced filesystem created by Sun Microsystems (now owned by Oracle) and released for OpenSolaris in November 2005.

Features of ZFS include: pooled storage (integrated volume management โ€“ zpool), Copy-on-write, snapshots, data integrity verification and automatic repair (scrubbing), RAID-Z, a maximum 16 exabyte file size, and a maximum 256 quadrillion zettabyte storage with no limit on number of filesystems (datasets) or files[1]. ZFS is licensed under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL).

shell garden
#

so if the data doesn't change, the snapshot doesn't take up much extra space

light spruce
#

There's your rough "what it does"

#

Checksums, raid, snapshots, copy on write, native compression

foggy path
#

Tbh most of those things sound like stuff that'd probably be nice to have but I don't know if I'd really need them lol

#

Not sure how integrity checks and such would help if you have a failing drive or something because at that point the data would already be fucked

#

not sure if you'd really need that function for much else

light spruce
#

Because you don't just have one drive

#

You would at the very least do a mirror

shell garden
#

btrfs has most of these features

#

but it's also newer than zfs

foggy path
#

ah, I guess if you have it in RAID the checksum would be useful

shell garden
#

less polished

light spruce
#

Yeah, ZFS would not be particularly useful for a single drive

foggy path
#

but on the other hand isn't there a RAID mode that has integrity checking ๐Ÿค”

light spruce
#

You're thinking of parity

foggy path
#

maybe :D

#

I once bought two disks to put in raid

#

I ended up not putting them in raid and just filling them both with bunch of crap

#

:D

light spruce
#

And parity is really for "shit, a disk failed"

shell garden
#

it wants to scream in your face about how raid-0 isn't raid

median wraith
#

someone knows how to save in bp a generated mesh ?

#

๐Ÿค”

#

*in editor

foggy path
#

Generated how?

light spruce
#

My "large" array is four disks in Raidz2, which means two parity stripes

#

Also, being able to adjust the recordsize for individual datasets is pretty great for tuning specific disk performance situations

median wraith
#

@foggy path

#

trying to figure how to use this

#

want to create a box and then save it as a mesh in the editor

foggy path
#

hmm

#

I made some bp utils that generate a bunch of assets for sprites and such but they basically just work by assigning data into the sprites and then saving them

#

so you'd need to create a static mesh I guess and then assign the mesh data into it, and then save it as an asset

#

which I'm not sure is possible in BP's

light spruce
#
colony/srv/perforce/perforcejournal recordsize 8K local
colony/srv/perforce/perforceroot recordsize 256K local
colony/srv/rsync recordsize 32K received

So you're not stuck with a single cluster size across the entire filesystem. My virtual machines are in 4k cluster QCOW2 files on a dataset that also uses a 4k recordsize

#

My VMs are still formatted as EXT4 though

median wraith
foggy path
#

I didn't, the sprites have data formats which you can work with more easily in BP's

#

the problem is that the mesh data I don't think is really accessible in such a way

You should be able to save the data itself, but not necessarily as an asset
