if the bootup takes the longest time within that process I'll probably just set it up so that it takes more than one screenshot at a time so it doesn't need to boot up so often

I used the Screw tool and created the loops I needed, increased the steps so it was smoother and then deleted the edges I didn't need. Then the rest is simply a plane with a Curve deform modifier.

thats all good. I always apply transforms like a good blender boy. This is more like the physical animation of the single bone has no correlation to the morph target anim whatsoever. I can only think that deformation being a Morph Target and not an Armature animation is what is doing it. But I don't want to add a bone setup for it because its a subdivided plane and would need a fair amount of bones.

its kind of an awkward setup if you want it out of blender. I thought the anim + morph would be enough but I tried allsorts with the anim curves and such and its just flat out bricked. Im confident the vertex anim will be good enough tho. Might have to do an Asset Shuffle though once the anim is complete. I don't want a 16k triangle cube hanging around

if its just for a set piece animation though, ie. just the char rolling it up after a kip, it's fine. I've seen a billion polys in this engine before and it ran ok 😄

shader compilation goes a LOT faster when you tell your artists "no you cannot have a custom shader for that, just bake it in the textures or something"

forward shaders tend to be slower to compile, I think (because each shader has to compile the whole lighting part when deferred only vary in the part that writes to the GBuffer?)

@zinc matrix that's where I started. I can make that system work great. But when I get to the export phase, I can't get the morph targets to be aligned with the location animation of the mat. So it just morphs directly from flat->rolled and it looks like this

@ivory lodge yeah it sucks. Especially when you are about to settle into work and the lack of being paid kickstarts the panic attack. Or looking at a job offer and thinking "RUN AWAY" instead of saying "Sure I can do that"
I guess it should be done as a cloth sim really, as it seems to be made of cloth like material. But that's got it's own caveats in terms of gameplay ready asset.

I've never been a production speed coder. Even when I was in web development. I prefer to do it the right way, with the right amount of thought, with refactoring from proof of concept if necessary. To make sure the end result is the best practice.
Unfortunately production speed is "We need this in half the time it takes to do it" and you panic.

It was mostly annoying because I was trying to avoid getting into it. I could have straight up called him a c-word as I was so angry about it. Which is my usual response. But I was aware Twitter would ban me for it. Even though Ricky Gervais calls people a c-word quite often on that platform.
