The problem with patents in general is that they are bad at protecting smaller inventors vs larger companies.
The way they are implemented means that they can both protect too much or to little and become useless.
The important rule that by making a patent you should document your invention also doesn't really work well anymore.
The protection time offered also does not universaly fit.
I would personally say for the most part the current system does not work well.
Medicine being an exception I know where it does, as the thing you are patenting is also the thing you need to spend a lot of money researching / validating. And after it expires it's rather cheap to replicate.
