Just started Doom 2016. First impressions:

1. never played quake, but I imagine this is how the game felt. The running speed initially feels way too fast, until I realized that Doomguy is just firing on all cylinders all the time.

2. guns feel great to play with

3. platforming is OK

4. game holds up well for being a nearly 10 year old title.

5. having a blast playing on easy mode. Trying to get to Eternal ASAP.

They're bigger than the Slayer, the Slayer's 1.98m tall whereas the imps are 2.13m tall, give or take for lore purposes, since even though the character models are the same, they probably wouldn't all be exactly identical in reality.

Same here. the Cyberdemon's arm cannon strike is annoying because it requires proper timing and strafing. problem is strafing in this game doesn't work because on top of your movement speed being slow as molasses, player speed in any other direction but forwards is slower for some fucking reason. Gauss jumping is the only way to semi-consistently avoid it I find.

that, and the reaction window/sound cue isn't very good at telegraphing the attack. every other move is fine though. I generally find the bosses in both games to be very easy.

After you jump down from the balcony where you first come out and keep going for a little bit, in the area where the first praetor token is acquired, there is a platform with like metal wiring (idk what else to call it's like metal structure) you can go behind it and pull a lever, then the entrance to the secret level will appear close by

I don't remember exactly how it works (doesn't it save as soon as you exit to main menu or not), but I recommend either to check and pick up collectible and then exit to main menu (not out of a game completely!) or reach at least some sort of checkpoint. Reaching end of a level isn't needed for anything outside of getting points for encounters vs enemies.

Yeah a lot of the sound design was vast in doom 2016…
Its a result when the game was developed for 10 years straight and had so much time to work on everything so it was well put together.

While Doom eternal had a really short development time and PLUS they had to work on DLCs which they had so little development time its embarrassing, they genuinely feel like a mod.
If they scrapped the DLC or delayed it while giving way more time+better management to the campaign itself..
Doom eternal would actually be the best doom game ever

With the time they had it’s extremely impressive what was done actually.
But clearly it could’ve been managed way better, you can definitely see most aspects been put at the last second, and levels that shouldve been earlier in the campaign.. its kind of a mess.

it's almost like every element in Eternal exists in favor of the gameplay so it intentionally forgoes most of these things. the visuals are so safe they blend together most of the time, same for the music which only has like 4 heavy combat tracks that actually stick out among so many ambience tunes. level design is a mixed bag with only the first 4 levels doing anything interesting as they are actually nonlinear. the plot is rushed and basic so no clue why you think it deserves a mention. 'attention to detail' yeah, I guess the levels do have a lot of unnecessary levels of detail to make up for how simple they are to traverse.
also the multiplayer is dead and Snapmap is ass without Snaphak.

I'm double jumping and DSKMS everything in plain sight, walking into square rooms that lock up and fill up with imps. I go from a cookie cutter sci-fi facility to an orange desert with the same blaring rock music the entire time.

If that's meant to be dark and immersive then Doom 64 must be a Barlowe painting.

the hi-tech minimal approach to the art direction, UI elements, weapons and the basic combat loop is genuinely good and appreciated, but there's nothing really remarkable about it at the end of the day. it's fun and I can see the nods to the classic games, but it's little more than a sci-fi wave shooter where you play as a dude in power armor.

Giving a description to something, making it out like it’s unbelievable could be said to the most immersive believable stories in video games(half life and the Witcher for example got outlandish stories but because of their consistency and delivery they are the most immersive games out there).

Delivery and consistency is key and doom 2016 does it phenomenally while having a very simple plot, and thats all yoh need, its a doom game, the story should be secondary and simple.

Eternal's much more drawnout and gimmicky and has far less exploration, and a much weaker sense of place.

Also sound effects in 2016 were a lot better, same for the music

I also think Eternal's resource restacking is way too busted. Letting you make basically infinite pools of health and armor with just a couple buttons.

... and dash spam and air mobility spam makes you basically untouchable.

Also the whole "chase random fodder every 20 seconds to watch slow boring bootlegged reload cutscene" to fill your ammo is such a tedious thing.

I do prefer Eternal's Soldiers, Zombies, Shield Guys, and Possessed on the other hand probably.

2016 Multiplayer Prowler looked better than Eternal's Prowler as well

Eternal's Whiplash is one of my favorite designs, but she's only in Eternal, so I can't really compare her.

It's a common bug, if you have the rune that helps you glory kill from further away equip it

But imo the safer method is to use the turret chaingun. It does enough damage where you can mow them down if you start firing while they're a good distance away

The cyberdemon? Make sure to keep circlestrafing him (just keep running sideways and circling him, but keep your distance)

When he does his laser attack, he's aiming it where he thinks you're going to be. Simply stop or start moving the opposite way
