I am more amenable to the vanilla levels after having played them more, but that doesn't take away from contemporary custom levels having more interesting combat and more intricate designs. If you want to stick to pwads, I get it. But I do think it's worth sticking through the originals as a baseline

unity crashes a lot unfortunately. Only real options are to play on a stronger port(woof, DSDA, gzdoom, eternity, whatever) or just save frequently and deal with it(I assume that you're playing unity because it's the only port that I know of that crashes at all)

then it might be on your end. computer issue like graphics card or something. DE is surprisingly stable. It crashes on occasion but not often. make sure your machine can actually play the game, or consider changing the settings to fit your machine

Okay so I managed to find the wad for what I posted in #screenshots turns out it's just a doom 3 mod pack with shitty levels in it
Most of the key cards are just a pain to find in level 1 due to requiring jumping (platform cringe], level 2 was pretty easy for some reason and I got bored of level 3
While Doom 2 levels are the where the fuck do I go at least I had ammo, this was just bad levels with low ammo in the first level and tons in the 2nd

They use something called Android NDK, basically it can run c/c++ code (which is the programming language used in most source ports) and run it on android
It's very easy compared to porting the source port to Java or Kotlin
but you still gotta be an experienced programmer

For ultraviolence, e4m6 is up there. e1m3 is pretty good. e2...ok nothing great in there for uv tbh. e3m4 is nice. e3m6 is a cool map, but I prefer it in NM because hunting the last monsters takes forever. e4m1 is pretty good. e4m2, prefer on NM.
Eh even e4m6 has issues with hunting rando extra monsters(cacos outside the fortress). Probably e1m3 is the strongest map to play on UV.
They should add a event to eternal were they make skins that make the weapons look like the ones from the original doom and quake
i kinda regret buying d2 on switch tbh because of how shit the maps are, no rest for the living is banger tho
they've never had skins that change the complete models. idk if they could handle that without changing stuff relatively majorly
d2 has some map variance sure, but it does have some good ones, and levels that even if...odd, were inspirational for future designers. And most importantly, you get doom2.wad

A lot of levels just don't seem to be designed with uvmax in mind.
I think it’s still worth it just to have tbh. I have every doom (besides eternal) on my switch plus duke 3D, quake, strife, dusk, warlock project, the turoks, and ion fury and it’s basically how I get my boomer shooter kicks in on the daily.
I feel like I could run e1 OG doom blindfolded at this point but it’s like therapeutic to me to get home from work and run through that episode.

Random question, but how often do you guys save if at all? I only save at the start of levels, when I pick up a key, or have to get off
Kinda depends on the map really. Maps I hate normally I’ll save scum a bit but in general I’ll only save at the start of e3 levels because I can’t be asked to pistol start.
Saving is good to practice fights learn the map but when I do a run for real or record it I don't save. I find not saving will help you become a better player over all
For me, I’m currently doing all 4 episodes and I’m saving as I’m barely used to e1 myself
I bet I’ll start saving less when I’m doing a second run
feel free to save all you like. Just be aware that if you want to get stronger as a player, that usually means reducing allotted saves. Practice might mean making a save on every fight. And using excess saves within a fight can be disoriented. But it's up to you.

For vanilla experience I recommend crispy doom. It's based on chocolate doom (which is meant to perfectly recreate the DOS experience) but has a couple of extra options like slightly higher resolution and some "crispness" settings that you can fiddle with

They can run demos on the original doom 2 exe because they fully replicate how it worked in DOS
They don't have changes to the game even on a Boom level at all beyond Crispy being limit removing. And that's what they have.

The 1994 DOS Doom 2 Exe off the floppy that wouldn't be able to run things from most source ports, thats what exe compatible means
Basically any change would make a demo crash if you had tried to play it off of that, but Chocolate and Vanilla can
They have a lack of features and are much closer to the original while even with complevel other ports are really only pretending to run like the original

Then map09 is credits. map09 has a secret which opens an exit to map10 which is the secret level of sorts. It is extremely difficult. But other than map10, the first 8 regular levels are casual friendly

And they replicated Doom 3 alright, the shotgun has the worse firepower for you but for the enemies they take up to 60 hp with 1 shotgun blast to you and it isn't a rifle anymore which hurts the game since it forces you to use the pistol to snipe enemies then the enemies take like 12 shots to take down
Plus the max armor you can get now is 125🐸
Which makes the game unnecessarily hard

Rush it shoot it. Let it target you so it doesn't push forward. You run back into where you came and repeat. The trick is to get it to attack you so you're not cornered. You can also jump down where it came from. Back up shoot hug wall when targeted and repeat

there is a block that you can use to block the splash damage(archie zaps only do 20 damage if you have a block at your feet between you and the vile). and a rev to help infight. With that said, the map03 viles are cruel
The block has to be at least 25 map units high for that to work but yeah, you can block the blast damage element of the archie attack that way (which is most of the damage)
decino's vid talks about 24 as the minimum(or lower until 17 if you play with standing slightly far away from the wall
24 is hard to pull off because you can accidentally step over the block

You can play multiplayer with a any source port you want, but you'll have to use local lan or port forwarding or some other shenanigans that most people don't have time to do just to play multiplayer doom

yeah, we are not the best at doom so our strategy basically becomes clear out as much as we can but once we get to a hard enemy just repeatedly respawn and use the limited ammo we get from the reusable weapon pickups to just repeatedly rush the enemy

yeah but thats the one thing i dislike about doom coop
is that eventually once you have killed most of the fallen humans and picked up all of the ammo in the level, if you die, you have very little ammo to work with
at that point, your only source of ammo becomes the reusable weapon pickups
I think in Zandronum there is an option to keep weapons after death, but what I'd really like in a vanilla like multiplayer with the option to drop weapons on death

there is an alternate but equally available version of sigil that replaces episode 3 instead of acting as a 5th episode. I think it's called lim removing on doomwiki because of the e5 stuff but maybe it really isn't fully fully vanilla.

In slade you can right click a texture and choose "add to TextureX" after a texturex lump has been created you can choose the texture you want and arrange it however you want
You can even create a new texture using a combination of existing ones

The main difference is that GZDoom supports opengl and more advanced graphics settings so if you don't care about it being faithful and just want to pump up the graphics as much as you can you may be better off with GZDoom rather than Zdoom (tbh there's really no reason to use Zdoom anymore as it doesn't offer anything that GZDoom doesn't). If you want to try to be somewhat faithful while still being able to support boom-compatible mods I would suggest PRBoom+ over both GZDoom and Zdoom, and if you don't care about mods that need more than just limit removing then I'd just use Crispy doom.
DSDA also supports openGL and is vanilla compat. It even has all-ghosts. Don't forget, zdoom can run lilith

But my closest bet is the Icon since death of him always ends the level. Whereas the Cyberdemon and the Mastermind both and respectively only takes you to intermission in specific levels, map 08 of episodes 2 to 4.

After giving another playthrough of btsx.. I have to say it isn't as epic as I remember playing it the first time through unity
Click tools > game configurations > look for "MBF21: Doom 2 (Doom format)" and check the checkbox > create a new map and you should have mbf option
different comp levels mbf is cl11 and mbf21 is cl21

by all means, they're the high tier enemy used the most aggressively in doom2.wad so they can feel disproportionally annoying, as well as having a unique ability. My real take is that every enemy can be placed well, even if you dislike some of their placements. Since I mentioned, d64 pains are more aggressive and lost souls are far more aggressive than usual, and pains explode when they die, and a lost soul that fails to spawn(tries spawning in a wall or inside a monster/player) will explode.
They're not that bad. Just need to make sure to rush them and make them a priority. Get into their face and use a stun lock weapon. I prefer chaingun but plasma if you have it. Get in close so it can't lost soul. Rush into its body as it explodes

I just already despised lost souls so I hate something that infinitely creates them
If they are low to the ground during a large fight you can also swing around them upclose stun them and use them as a shield as they take in enemy projectiles

nah that's fine, probably the healthiest way to play new maps imo. Full playthroughs saveless -- they're what I like doing -- but after practice. It's really hard to figure out routing or even layout without saves. And it's a good middleground from saving every second which can be disorienting and let you rely too heavily on rng

Hypothetically, if I wanted to emulate the sound of loud footsteps echoing from an air duct as a player/enemy moved through it, what would be the best way to replicate that effect? The solution I came up with was putting linedefs in the ducts that open/close a door when walked over and just have the door be out of the way somewhere

using sector magic, you can create new secret sectors on the fly that are not accounted for by the level "Total secrets" tally. But perhaps, a mapmaker designs such that n secrets are unreachable and n secrets are generated by that weird sector magic. Could be useful so that the existence of the thing being a secret pairs with when an item teleports onto that area. Items can teleport, at least in boom. idk if it can be done in vanilla. don't think so.

so i was able to import some textures that worked well, but i am running into an issue when i tried to make a really tall texture
i want my map to be mbf compatible, as in compatible with the original dos mbf
the texture is 128x512
and it looks fine in prboom-plus
but when i opened it in winmbf to test compatibility
it has this strange gap in it

Yeah that probably won’t work right. I recommend downloading one of the source ports (basically emulators) and running the ROM through it. Crispy Doom is best for a vanilla faithful experience, ZDoom for a bunch of modern features that aren’t in the original game added

or dsda-doom, a fork of PrBoom that has more features, mostly aimed at speedrunning
