for example one good add-on (I should say WAD, that's the correct term and I hate saying add-on all the time) is Doom Zero for Doom 2

Every stuff not posted to idgamesarchive like doomworld is usually fine. The sites are well moderated, authors earn reputation, comments give a sense of what it is, and you should only download zips, wad files or pk3s unless you're downloading a port. ports get so much usage that we should feel safe with those two. Custom doom has less bloat than official stuff
Rars are also common for some GZDoom mods

Random question but why does it seem like the BFG doesn't always hit stuff close in front of you? Like it might miss 1 to 3 enemies out of 10.
Usually it happens when when I try to splode a bunch of enemies in front of me. Also it seems like they need to be visible to you for the AOE.
So you can't just shoot it then take cover.
And you can't shoot it then turn away from the enemies.
Some interesting programming behind that gun. Still very useful, but I question the programming.

So basically the BFG has no explosion when it fires. The projectile does 100-800 damage. Then, once the projectile collides with something, 40 invisible tracers that do 43-87 damage shoot out.
These tracers are why you can 2 shot Cyberdemons and 1 shot Spiderdemons from up close

none of what you said is true: BFG has no splash. It's not randomized "per monster". It's random per tracer. And has no explosion\

It's a glorified shotgun
The direction you face when firing matters, but the tracer effect with the majority of the damage will occur after. your initial angle matters. But you can face any direction when tracers land.
What you can do with cover is shoot your own wall/cover, then pop out for the tracers to activate
there's a lot of glory to it

for viles in particular, you have time to do that twice before they'd be able to attack
A lot of times I'll take damage when fighting a bunch of mancubi
think about the damage proportion: the main blast does 2000+ damage. the ball, maybe 500?
prioritize moving to their left(usually your right). Their second burst fires a shot very far to their right

Try loading up dead simple. Play strafing counter clockwise, and once clockwise. You'll notice that it's easier ccw.
Manc's have 600 HP. About 3 ssg's worth

The map is split into lil squares. Hitscan(pistol, shotgun, ssg, chain, bfg) use this to determine what they hit.
The path of the bullet is tracked and the game asks "what blocks will it travel through?" Then, it iterates through every object within those blocks. But a monster is only considered within a single block -- the one with their origin/center. But in reality, a monster's hitbox may occupy several blocks. So if your bullet pierces a monster's hitbox but never crosses the block that their origin is in, it will not connect. You can prevent this by firing diagonally as you'll by more likely to hit more blocks.

Those go through just because their speed is high enough such that at frame N they're behind the wall and on frame N+1, the fireball is fully on the other side of the wall. The game doesn't do quarter step checks like mario64. Again, this can be prevented with diagonal walls

there is a ton of strategy out there for chainsawing big enemies but I never really got into it
I just save my strong weapons for the big guys, it hardly causes me to run out of ammo.
Would be fun to be grab an invincibility and berserk all the big guys though.

That one level was when there was discussion about banning controller for speedruns. While I don't submit stuff most of the time, I try to play by the rules. That map i beat while that discussion was happening. If there is RNG to the way enemies move, how do demo files perfectly repeat it?
Doom is deterministic. Every time an RNG call is made, it takes the next number in the random digit table. In a demo, the table will start from the first entry every time
In a demo, all these RNG calls are being made in the same order and therefore asking for RNG at the same index of the table.
Does that mean an enemy makes the exact same decision on a given frame every time you play?
given that you made the same inputs and started on the same seed.
It's not the frames that determine the RNG index. The RNG index advances every time RNG is called. So a fully static map would never advance the table.

From my experience, the quicker you go, the easier it becomes.
on occasion, doing a playthrough with nomonsters helps to learn the map
It uses psuedo random (Basically things will repeat if all events that use randomization happen again in same order), usually players have enough variance in their gameplay that they won't feel how it works and assume it is using true randomization
Or if you use a port that replaces the way randomization works (Breaks all demos)
Like, I'm proud of my 12 second run of E1M1 if that says anything.
Just compare yourself with your previous runs unless you are competing for top 10, it is just extra stress for no reason to try and hit world record times casually

Think of Doom like a giant pachinko machine of inputs that cascades down one of the billions of “pre-determined” paths you could take and would change the pattern of the game’s entire experience.

If you used the exact same inputs, the game would respond exactly the same. It responds seemingly organically but you’re actually shifting through multiple pre-determined paths with every turn of the mouse and press of a key

I think I realised why I'm not a big fan of doom 2's new sprites mixed in with doom 1's
It's cause they're all just brown
Doom 1's enemies are bright pinks, greens, etc
(I know it's not the case) but it almost feels like doom 1's sprites are 8 bit and doom 2's are 16 bit, they're weirdly smoothed out and not as stylised
archviles and knights are probably the easiest monster to confuse. Revs are red though

Myhouse.wad does it in an easier way though, there's 28 copies of the house, the upper floor and lower floor being different sections.
They use portals to teleport you from upper floor to lower floor
You don't notice the portal, you would if the automap wasn't blanked out

What are some of the best custom enemies, that fit into the vanilla enemy type?
I saw a hell knight style enemy that flies in some wads, which seemed cool and felt like it fit
Cybruiser is super common -- but is used in slightly different ways. Maybe he'll shoot 3 rockets, maybe a weaker rocket, maybe a chaingun too. Maybe he's blast resistant maybe not. That and a weak flyer are pretty common
I don't know why, but I find Nightmare difficulty fun to play because I can just stay in one place and kill demons that respawn.

Playing doom wads has to be the most confusing thing I’ve ever come across. I must be doing something wrong because I am having so many issues that I’m considering deleting all the gz doom files and stuff and starting from scratch with doom 1 and doom 2 wad files
it's behind the arachnotron that you killed. The teleporter by the arachno is really for deathmatch
One of the best things I did to make things easier was to download ZDL, which is a doom launcher that helps get all your ducks in a row for your dooming experience with a choice of source port, iwad, and pwads as well as access to other command lines before launching the game itself

so basically zdl stands for zdoom launcher. and gz doom is a software that makes it so you can play doom wads easier (because the original doom wads played very differently then fps games today) zdl makes it so you can launch doom wads without gz doom mashing wads together
its also used to manage doom mods on doom wads

GZ doom doesn't "make it easier to play doom wads". It's just an alternate engine or port for doom with unique design goals. GZ intends to be highly moddable but doesn't play to the original game's physics. Just like DSDA has other design goals as a port/engine that serves to be moddable in other ways but is exact in its replication of the old engine's physics

the vanilla game doesn't even have the capability to spawn different stuff on nightmare. Open up an editor and check out the difficulty settings for item spawns: you can flag an item for, "easy"(Itytd,hmp), "medium"(hmp) and "hard"(uv, nm) and you can set items to be coop exclusive(but not solo exclusive). There's no function in vanilla to make sure something only spawns on nightmare.
There are technically vanilla things you can do like have an archvile and a pinky race off screen to check for the -fast parameter, but even that won't check for full nightmare
Oh I must have been getting mixed up with Ultra Violence and Ultra Violence+ spawns.
unity's uv+ is -coop_spawns with -fast.
Traditionally, uv+ meant -coop_spawns but whatever.
There's another similar parameter called -solo-net. -solo-net has you play a coop game alone. So you'll have all the trappings of coop where weapons don't vanish, respawning is enabled and doomguy has a player1 background. -coop_spawns simply spawns in items from coop

Ultra Violence and Ultra Violence+ are the hardest difficulties that are balanced and thought out, yes
uv+ is literally "let's see what'd happen if we gave them the coop setup lol then made them fast too for no reason". It wasn't in the original game in a named capacity for a reason

I think Doom 2 tried to increase the scope and complexity of its levels too which lead some of them to be pretty ugly

I recently watched a video on some stuff that is impossible to do in Doom and Doom II.
With some of them being a handful of levels that have unreachable secrets.
My question is, was this a design decision that Id made on purpose, or an oversight?

it's an oversight. The original UI wouldn't say "a secret is revealed" so it'd be unclear for "playtesting" (which I'm sure happened consistently for different playstyles...) which secrets popped. They're accidental

The only glitched secrets in doom 1 and 2 are: e4m3: there is a stairwell with 20ish stairs each counted as its own secret. While accessible...um they should not be separate. Also, there are some torches that are marked as secrets for some reason that you can't reach.
e4m7 has two "impossible" secrets. It's at an invuln. Both the invuln sector and the very tiny sector in front of it count. With extreme precision, you could get rocket jumped by the cyber into the lil cubby for the first secret, then use save-> loading to drop into the second secret below.
doom2 map15 has the famous pain elemental secret at the teleporter.

oh it's not a broken secret but there are several secrets that are doubly tagged, empty, or even areas with hidden items that aren't tagged as secrets
I think what’s so cool about classic Doom is that parts of it are undoubtedly primitive, yet there are other parts that hold up so well.
some of its "primitive" enemy patterns make them predictable. When individual enemies are weak and predictable, it makes it easier for custom mappers to put them in more positions: either via huge numbers or tight spaces
DOOM's enemy design is brilliant, some of the best ever made

The only enemy I'd straight up don't like gameplay-wise is the Baron
too much hp for too little difficulty, baron only works in very tight corridors
I don't like Hell Revealed because of its sheer Baron count, it's annoying

Hell Knights are kind of better barons in that regard just because they have less health

Has anyone had this happened....you shoot at a demon and or zombies and somehow they become immortal and that they can walk through walls that actually happened twice for me it doesn't do it very often but just wondering if anyone had it happened?
it's common enough. Two ways it can happen: individual enemies who get smooshed by a door as or after they die will have this property when they get revived by a vile.
OR, if you shoot in a very very particular way that will realistically never happen for most people, there can be rouding issues causing the gun to "shoot" the same things over and over until map-data gets erased

you can still hurt them if you're suuuper precise or more realistically with splash damage or monster melee attacks
Monster melee is a distance check, not a collision check. So losing collision data isn't a problem for them

Gzdoom, like any source port, makes use of either its own emulation of doom or the open source code. When you purchase doom, you're really paying for the assets: sounds, sprites, textures, music. There are alternative assets you can get for free like freedoom2.wad. But you'll have totally different assets. As much as I like the freedoom project, ya can't beat the classic assets(other than maybe filling in a couple missed pixels or alignments)

if you have cells, use them. They'll do more dps on the cyber and you're not saving up for anything.
Just dodge and keep some distance if you aren't confident. Sometimes, it's ok to just watch him for a minute to learn the patterns
Rockets do much more damage than cells normally, but cybers take no blast damage

Given doom's vanilla maps, long distance isn't all that present. But on custom stuff, it comes up and low res can be rough

Doomcute is just sector art, so you're just changing the heights of floors and and ceilings to get the effect.
If I'm correct MyHouse uses two copies of the house which are switched inbetween with portals.

Annoying? I'd say Pain Elemental for sure, it's a great unique pressure enemy that walls you in and limits your options if you let it do its thing
Archviles are way more threatening than annoying, they're a top tier threat that you gotta remove from the board in any fight

Revenants are the most annoying fuck in all of doom. I don’t care how many dozens of slaughter wads try to make them seem “cool” or like “only elite gamers can appreciate revenants”, they all suck to fight. You never truly know when a rev is gonna fire a homing missile and somehow there’s always one trailing behind you that ALWAYS does max damage and will kill you when you forget one little projectile

not every command is universal. The only thing you have for sure is menu cheats on unity, and the classic ID.... cheats on other ports
if you just want the enemies gone, you might be better off launching with the -nomonsters param
Some stuff in earlier houses are just made out of lines and textures or doom objects but a lot of it uses 3D objects thanks to it being for GZ and not vanilla
The separate floors are done through line portals which makes separate lines act like they’re connected and then has I think fifteen copies of the house with all the variants which is how the inside stairs and some other bits work
The appearance of multiple floors at one outside is done through some shenanigans with 3D floors slopes at such an angle they are almost flush with the wall
The black and white milkshake room as well as one but at the airport utilise 3D floors
