do you guys feel like classic doom is based more off mechanical skill or mental skill
i feel it's considerably more of the latter bar speedruns
decisions and strategies impact your performance significantly more than how well you can shoot and dodge (again, bar speedruns)
speedruns are very variable, i feel like iwads are essentially pure mechskill at this point bc new routes aren't as common anymore
Doom doesn't require all that much in terms of precise aiming and the basic movement is very approachable. Certainly for speedruns, you have to do crazy movement, but the basic left right forwards and back isn't too bad

Some maps you have to focus more on than others, especially if the map has a lot of doors 
But for others? You can just keep waltzing and slaying demons with your BFG as you search for a way out 🥰

Went from playing mods like Brutal doom and Brutal Wolfenstein, to playing the original doom with the chocolate doom source port. It hit me like a freight train lol. Gonna try a plutonium run with chocolate doom, to suffer like they did back in the day.

First time playing, crispy, woof, or nugget?
Crispy is good if you're only looking into playing the base IWADs or limit-removing maps
Woof is good if you like the features of Crispy but want to play more advanced maps
Nugget is just Woof but with more features from Crispy
I personally use Crispy and Woof and have never really tried Nugget
These sourceports sound funny 🤭
Someone told me that Woof has qol improvements over Crispy, even if I'm just playing the Main Episodes.

I say Woof is overall a good all-rounder
you can try Nugget if you like Woof as Nugget is based on Woof

Does anyone know why I might not be getting solid sixty frapes per second with mods like MyHouse.wad? My laptop has an 840m, i7-4710HQCPU @25.0 GHz and 8 gb ram. Is it the hardware or could there be a software problem?

Plutonia has more consistent design, I'll give it that. But the counter-argument to that is how much of that consistency comes from brutally unfair traps. Not challenging traps, mind you. ***Unfair ***traps. brb spawning 6 chaingunners behind you.
The brutally unfair traps are at least engaging. TNT is the gameplay equivalent of watching paint dry.
I don't really remember unfair traps from Final Doom, only that you're forced to walk in rooms that can just vaporize you in seconds
Still though I'd rather fight 150 tough demons than 300 hitscanners
And TNT loves its hitscanners
Literally the first map of Plutonia has several of those, like that corridor trap where a monster closet containing 2 chaingunners opens up behind you. Unless you know it's coming, it's virtually impossible to not take massive damage. Stuff like that is par for the course throughout Plutonia. The level design itself is generally better Vs TNT, though. It's mostly the unfair encounter design that I don't really care for all that much. Tbh both Plutonia and TNT have some issues with encounter design; Plutonia has too many revenants and TNT too many chaingunners.

Chaingunners are actually one of my fav enemies. I merely dislike the way TNT uses them. A great example is that map called 'Metal' where you have this huge open room with a bunch of chaingunners in it. They're so far away that the autoaim (required unless you're using a source port with freeaim) doesn't even work on them half the time, which makes that room brutally unfair. The only way I was able to beat it was by cheesing may way through it by luring most of the enemies on the lowest floor into a corridor where I gunned them all down, and then rocked sniped the chaingunners afterward.
Assuming you're taking cover: get our, shoot a rocket, get back to cover
Final Doom in general does like wide rooms. What you describe is how I found out Doomguy's autoaim has less range than his enemies'...
As I replay Plutonia I come to really appreciate its level design. I think it has a better handle on the strengths and weaknesses of its enemies than Doom II does.

How long did it take for Plutonia to be made again? Because it could be that Plutonia devs had more time to make their wad than Doom II devs did
and that would've been more time to understand how the different enemies in the game should be used
Rocket launcher becomes borderline overpowered if you have free mouseaim enabled because it lets you snipe away many of the turret enemies (chaingunners, revenants, etc) whereas normally you'd have to either get close or at least defeat the other enemies first. Though tbh the rocket launcher is a great anti-chaingunner weapon even in vanilla. Chaingunners are unironically the most dangerous enemy in the game save for the arch-vile because of their ability to attack infinitely once the attack animation starts. The spider creatures can do this also but unlike the chaingunner they can only fit in certain spaces.
Arachnotrons are also less dangerous because their projectiles aren't hitscan
Yes but they move so fast they can be really hard to avoid.

All you need is the game iwad file. It doesn't matter how you install the game or where it's obtained from.

I'm assuming you're playing with saves and loads already?
if you just can't find the secrets and are ready to throw in the towel you're free to do whatever you like really. Look it up, use cheats, look in an editor.
I'd recommend whichever method seems the most fun!

you could try doing a practice run with saves to find the secrets, then go for a single-segment run once you've located them all
like, the menus are just so polished and easy to navigate. well-designed for modern systems. built-in launcher for wads and stuff

hey guys, I have for the most part played all of my doom with saves, but I want to get better at the game to be able to play harder wads. what set and on which difficulty is a good introduction to playing saveless?
i was going to do doom 2 but by map09 i started to get really annoyed by the map design
I'd say just lower the difficulty over time after like 10 deaths on a map
then after a couple maps with less than 5 deaths to raise the difficulty some if you wanna pistol start
i don't mind things being a bit grindy
my problem with doom 2 was just that the level design was very irritating in places

Scythe 1 is good fun for practice, or you could play alien vendetta
i was able to make it through most of the maps from episodes 1 and 2 from scythe 1 on uv without saves
i think i only saved once during map07 bc even tho its super short i was struggling with it for some reason and getting annoyed and i also saved in map19 because its longer than others and maybe a couple others im not remembering
but then when i got to map21, i struggled very very hard to do it saveless
i did get it in the end but it took a while and i havent tried map22 yet

i tried playing plutonia without saves on uv and i got thru the first 3 maps but i struggled with map04
but i also ddidnt try for THAT long, so i could probably do it eventually
Plutonia has a rough first few levels, but I’m sure you could figure it out now
ive played all of plutonia in coop and the first 21 maps in singleplayer on uv with saves so im decently familiar with it

If you want to play with fewer saves, it really is going to take playing with saves first. I've done a decent amount of hard stuff and never played a map without saves before a saveless attempt. What this really means is you practice with saves and then do an attempt. Crumpets (small mapset from ribbiks(easier than his usual stuff with short punchy levels focused on ammo management) or anything from skillsaw might be a good place to start. As these wads are challenging but directed towards a broader audience than a cult classic like nosp2

If you’re referring to the steam option to play doom with classic controls, that’s just the DOS version with the mouse turned off in the Doom config file

now the game even with ray tracing is possible

If you ran the original setup program or even use Chocolate Doom’s setup program (it can edit the vanilla game’s config) you can see there are options for the mouse as input

i've done Eviternity 1 uv pistol start (not always fully maxing) with minimal mid fight saves (i think i might have done them sometimes)
the problem with that set tho is that with many of the maps its hard to divide them into distinct fights
since they are more exploratory
so I had a hard time knowing when to save in various parts
SL is a mix between arenas and more open stuff

Not sure. Everyone has somewhat of a subjective take on difficulty. I never play saveless, but I always UV pistol-start anything I play.
I still think Fire and Ice (Scythe 1 - Map 30) is hard as balls, while God Machine (Sunlust Map 30) I beat first try.
If some level is generally harder than what I’m used to, my mind tends to think it is poorly optimized…but that’s just me.
Magnolia on UV was fun, not hard.
But the last TWO levels of the 1x1 project are beyond stupid when it comes to difficulty, at least when I ran them

like their "short range" thing gets massively overstated. You don't see hunters getting right up in a deer's face for a shot
it may be the only game with a sniping shotgun, but sniping shotguns aren't as foreign a concept as games would have you believe 😆

im on map22, and i HATE the evil marines. it just feels like there is no consistent strategy to fighting them. just pray to rngesus

even after beating all of scythe 2, and using some light TASing(pause spam) to do a true uvmax of map31(secret exit and all kills in that all-marines deathmatch), I still couldn't tell you a good strat for them besides knowing where they'll be in advance.

Wanting to take a break from 2016, and my Doom skills are very rusty. Should I go through Doom 1 again, including E4 this time? Jump straight into Doom 2, since I've never really played it much? Or say screw it and just do a weekend of classic Doom binge of both 1 and 2?

I did start playing Doom by having doom2.wad downloaded by complete mistake when I was really into Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch. That mistake is now corrected since I own all Doom games legally now... and I stopped playing Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch
The key to owning your games is either through key selling sites or Steam sales. That way you can buy games cheaper and still own them legally, which is a good middle ground between piracy and paying full price.

Really wonky? Damn. It feels great on console even on the switch for me. A console honestly fits for boomer shooters like DOOM imo. If you want to get better, theres not much to it. Just make sure to strafe around to avoid dmg. The ai is fairly simple. Make sure to get rid of hitscanners first since they have more accuracy than imps. You'll also have to manage ammo and switch around weapons for the perfect scenario. Really, its about abusing cover and strafing, managing weapons and priotizing enemies.

Exactly why you have to scan the environment and think of which weapon is perfect for the situation before going into the room itself

It is good. Never really deserved the following it got to warrant a million sequels tho. A good chunk of the community conflate difficulty with plutonia, when you can have difficult levels without it being a direct plutonia reference.

I use fl studio because I already had it but I know a lot of people use sekaiju
I use fl studio too but its not that great with midi files. I want something i can create proper doom music in case i want to use them in custom wads i may end up creating later
You just have to know how to do it right
Basically, what you want to do, is create multiple midi out channels, one for each instrument
And make sure you set the midi channel setting of each one to a different number
This will make no sound by itself, however if you go into your mixer, and on one mixer tab, add the fruity lsd effect plug-in, this plug-in will convert the midi stream from the midi outs into audio that you can actually hear
But you have to make sure you set the midi port in fruity lsd to be the same as in the midi out plugins
Then to do drums, just set one of your midi outs to channel 10, and that will be drums
Then when you export to midi, it will export properly
Hope this helps. This is what I do when making midis
You could also try sekaiju but personally I found the interface hard to get used to from fl
Aria maestoza is free and makes doom music

yea, the bug where you can't see the ceiling or floors? only solution my inexperienced ass could find is to run it on OpenGL

or if you buy doom 2 on gog, you get the doom 2 and tnt and plutonia wads much more straightforwardly
those are the two non-piracy ways to get doom 2 and final doom these days

I think Doom 2 on Steam straight up includes Final Doom and the Master Levels as I never downloaded them from the Addons menu

If it really bothers you that much to play on something other than UV I would suggest using easier difficulties as warm ups. Personally I get a lot of value out of playing something on HMP and then going back to UV to see the differences. It's cool seeing how different enemies/enemy placement affect how fights play out.

I don’t find E4 bad, I just don’t exactly like playing it, mainly because of E4M1 and E4M6
had a bit more fun with Doom 2 than I did with Episode 4

Compare the older level designs to quake 1 and it's a night and day difference
Doom 2's maps are easier to forgive with the context that the entire game was only made in 10 months. John Carmack was already starting on the Quake 1 engine, and John Romero was busy handling other business such as costume ports, distribution companies, playing death match with gamers and collecting Ferraris.
So they hired extra help, like Sandy Peterson (who came in during the final stages of Doom 1) American McGee, and Shawn Green.
Since they were all on such a time crunch, they didn't go for consistency, but for experimental map design, which is why Doom 2 is all over the place with design and difficulty

More or less, almost every Doom 2 map is based around some sort of gimmick. Tricks 'n Traps, the Crusher, Barrels of Fun, Gotcha, etc.
That's also what makes it fun imo, as you don't know what to expect (even when I replay it) next unlike Doom 1 where you basically know what you will go up against
I'm not in full defense of Doom 2's maps though, but I'm one of the few who do like them

- the pain elemental's the only thing that can restrict your movement well in large areas, most other movement restriction stuff is just "don't go here because ur in the line of sight of a ranged enemy"

fighting pain elementals with the rocket launcher is the greatest pleasure possible to experience

if you save after major encounters or checkpoints, that could be fun
saving after every level? fair yeah
not saving at all, beating every stage in one go? that can be fun, if not time consuming
only "wrong" way to play is a way that's not fun
The first one is how I'm saving and loading and yeah it wasn't fun during m16 for the above reason lol
I'm on m20 now and I'm thinking about either restarting or just finishing up and then replaying in a less cowardly manner lmao
that's how I used to play like, NES games on my 3DS when I was a kid. They were hard and punishing (game overs... yikes!) so I'd just save scum pretty much the whole time lol
i must have gotten some enjoyment out of it considering how much i did it

Maybe having one save at the start would be less "scummy" bc pistol start sounds a bit hard
the way I've been playing lately is just no saves. Start the game, play the level until I beat it, keep going
if I get through the stage stacked up and with nice weapons, cool, I keep them for the next stage and can use them
but if I die I lose them, pistol start
I think it makes a fun dynamic, I get the cool reward of keeping my weapons but also the experience of pistol starting which I find fun

personally I've been finding pistol start pretty fun tho, I like the dynamic of finding the new weapons, and it makes a lot of secrets much more meaningful
